Update (9/16/17): Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are available to buy.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have officially been announced! A new camera, no headphone jack, a better screen, and more in a package that looks both familiar and a little different.

I'm as excited as you are to get my hands on Apple's latest-and-greatest, but we're still going to have to wait a little while longer until these phones hit our hands and pockets. The iPhone's release date hasn't stopped case makers from working though; they started before today's announcement and these 9 cases for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are all ready to be ordered.

Given how popular the iPhone is, these are probably going to sell out pretty quickly, so if you want your new phone to be protected right out of the box, I'd suggest you pick one up. I already did.

DON'T MISS: 10 awesome and weird iPhone accessories you probably need

Spigen

This case has two parts to it: A shock-absorbing back and polyurethane bumper. The fact that the bumper is made out of a harder material is great, because phones that fall on a corner risk getting their screens messed up.

Spigen Bumper Style Premium Case Slim Fit Dual Layer Protective Cover for Apple iPhone 7, $15.99, available at Amazon

Ringke

If you prefer the hard plastic look to a fancy color or pattern, Ringke's Fusion case should serve you well. I've had cases like this in the past; they've protected my phone from a few falls, while letting my phone's color act as the flair.

Ringke Fusion Phone 7 Case [Crystal Clear Back], $10.99, available at Amazon

Caseology

If you do prefer a funky-colored case that also protects your phone, Caseology has you covered. Like the first case, there are two components in this case, but this one comes assembled. The harder outer shell — with reinforced corners — and the plastic polycarbonate back. It's thin enough that you shouldn't notice a big size and weight difference, but strong enough to make sure your phone survives a tumble.

Caseology [Wavelength Series] Slim Ergonomic Ripple Design iPhone 7 Case, $14.99, available at Amazon

Everything we know about the popular new Pokémon Go accessory

$

The new Pokémon Go Plus accessory, which looks like a Pokéball mixed with a Google Maps pin, will officially be available for purchase starting September 16. It costs $35.

Pokémon Go Plus is designed to work in tandem with the app using Bluetooth, taking care of some of the game's more basic functions so you don't have to keep glancing down at your phone.

Here's everything we know.

SEE ALSO: Here's how to choose a Buddy Pokémon once you download the newest Pokémon Go update

The little button will vibrate and light up green when you encounter a Pokémon. You can click the button to throw a Pokéball. If you catch it, it will light up and vibrate! If it flashes red, the Pokémon escaped.

It will also blink and vibrate blue when you are near a Pokéstop. If you click the device's main button, the Pokéstop's items will be added to your inventory.

There are some conflicting reports about what kinds of Pokémon the Plus device will let you catch.

Previously, Niantic said the accessory would only let you catch Pokémon that you had already encountered and added to your Pokédex in the full version of the app.

On Reddit, however, some people who have the device already are saying that they have been able to catch Pokémon that they hadn't yet encountered. We'll update this post when we know more.

10 ways you could be insulting people from other countries without realizing

tourists

One of the best parts of traveling overseas is experiencing another culture.

But be careful — you might be insulting someone without even knowing it. And while you might get a free pass as a tourist, your unintentionally offensive behavior might also be illegal.

Don't want to be that rude American tourist? Watch out for these 10 insulting behaviors in other countries.

SEE ALSO: There's a reason foodies are flocking to Portland, Maine, right now

Giving the OK Symbol

In many countries, the OK symbol means you're content with the service you received or you understand what someone's saying to you. But in Brazil, Turkey, and Venezuela, it's actually a vulgar slang that will offend those around you. And in France, the symbol may not be vulgar but it still means you think the person you're signaling is worthless and insignificant.

Considered Rude in: Brazil, Turkey, Venezuela, and France.

Tipping

Many Asian countries have a no tipping culture, so it can be considered rude to tip in some places, like restaurants, because food service is considered a team effort rather than an individual performance. In some European nations, it may also be interpreted to mean that the owner does not pay his or her employees enough.

Considered Rude in: Japan, South Korea, China, France, and Italy.

RELATED:Here's a Tip: Don't Stress Over Tipping

Keeping Your Shoes On

It's considered rude to keep your shoes on in temples, and at many restaurants, hotels, and especially in someone's home in many Asian countries. Especially in Japan, it's an honor to be invited into someone's home; bringing in dirt and dust is seen as disrespectful. You can wear provided slippers or socks around instead. It's also expected that you will point your shoes so that the toe faces the door.

Considered Rude in: Japan, Hawaii, South Korea, China, Thailand, and the South Pacific.

Stranger Things

Once in a blue moon, magic happens and a star is born. That's the case with Netflix's newest hit series, "Stranger Things."

The first season of the series, set in the 1980s, from brothers Matt and Ross Duffer ("Wayward Pines"), follows the disappearance of a young boy, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), and the monstrous chain of events it launches in the small town.

Viewers weren't just enraptured in the series' references to some of the most memorable movies in cinema, but also they fell in love with the show's cast, especially its young stars.

“All the kids are getting tons of praise for feeling ‘real,'" Carmen Cuba, the casting director on "Stranger Things," told the Los Angeles Times of the young actors' newfound fame.

Who are these kids and what's next for the talented bunch?

Here's a quick look at the young breakout stars of "Stranger Things":

DON'T MISS: Everything you need to know about 'Stranger Things' — the Netflix show people are obsessed with

Noah Schnapp as Will Byers

Noah Schnapp plays Will Byers, whose disappearance becomes the obsession of his family and friends and leads to a monstrous chain of events.

Fun facts: Born in Scarsdale, New York, 11-year-old Schnapp started his acting career in school and community plays. When he was eight years old, his acting teacher recognized his talent and suggested he go professional.

Biggest credits so far: Schnapp voiced the lead character, Charlie Brown, in 2015's "The Peanuts Movie." That same year, he appeared in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' "Bridge of Spies."

What's next: The second season of "Stranger Things."

Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler

Finn Wolfhard plays Mike Wheeler, the unofficial leader among Will's friends and the first to befriend Eleven (Millie Brown). He's a member of the AV club at the kids' middle school.

Fun facts: A Vancouver-native, 13-year-old Wolfhard is a film buff and wants to be a director when he grows up. He's a fan of Sam Raimi’s ("The Evil Dead") early work. Raimi's "Spider-Man!" was the first movie he ever watched. He also plays the bass and guitar.

Biggest credits so far: TV shows "The 100" and "Supernatural," and the independent film "Aftermath, the Resurrection."

What's next: The second season of "Stranger Things" and the movie, "It," based on the Stephen King novel.

Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven

Millie Bobby Brown plays Eleven, a young girl who runs into Mike, Lucas, and Dustin while they're searching for Will. She has tremendous powers and can help lead them to Will. But Eleven has led a horrific life in a nearby lab, being experimented on by Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine), who she considers her father.

Fun facts: Brown, 12, was born in Spain to British parents. They moved to Orlando when Brown was seven years old, and she began taking acting workshops. That's where an acting scout discovered her and convinced her parents that she would do very well in Hollywood. So, the family soon moved to LA.

Biggest credits so far: Within three months of moving to LA, Brown landed the role of young Alice on ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." She then landed a lead role in BBC America drama series, "Intruders." She has also appeared on "NCIS,""Modern Family," and "Grey's Anatomy."

What's next:The second season of "Stranger Things" (not confirmed).

british bake off

If executive producer Richard McKerrow had to describe "The Great British Bake Off" with one pastry, he'd choose a "proper" British Victoria sandwich.

"Creamy, fruity, a family-pleasing classic that seems straightforward but actually with the slightest error, can break your heart," he told Business Insider in July.

That dessert is also an apt description for many of this season's winning pastries — delicious and pleasing, but heart-breakingly caloric.

Here is a breakdown of the recipes (as listed by the BBC) and rough calorie count estimates (based on our own research) for this season's winning desserts on the GBBO.

5 things you should do before eating street food around the world

$
0
0

Screen Shot 2016 09 15 at 11.55.36 AMWhenever I tell friends that I love to eat street food when I travel, their first question is always whether or not I’ve gotten sick. I proudly inform them that, no, I’ve actually never needed the Immodium that I always pack in my carry-on bag.

Not only is street food a cheaper meal option, but it’s also essential to experiencing the best and most authentic food that many cities have to offer. And, frankly, restaurants aren’t always a safer bet.

But before you start trying everything that’s sold from a cart, there a few tricks to living that street-meat life you need to know. Here are our tips for easing your mind (and stomach) around food-handling environments that you may not be used to.

1. Knowledge is power!

Before traveling, you need to research what to eat. Find what’s commonly eaten in the area you’re traveling to and get an idea of what the food should look like—as well as the scenario in which the food is usually served. Locals and travelers won’t be singing the praises of chicken skewers that have been sitting in the hot sun all day.

2. Always wait in line at the busy stall.

Busy street food stalls are an indicator of popularity, and their high turnover rate means the food is never sitting out for hours and developing dreaded bacteria. Yes, long lines can be discouraging when you’re hungry after a full day of exploring, but it’s not worth the risk of grabbing precooked food from the empty spot next door. But there’s a caveat: A line for squid on a stick outside of Wat Pho doesn’t necessarily mean that cart is particularly good—it’s probably busy because of its location. Instead, look for a line that has locals in it and order what they’re ordering. Pointing and nodding your head works just fine when you’re hungry and there’s a language barrier. Think of it as Yelp in real time.

3. Eat when the locals are eating.

The last and most important element here is when to eat. You’re likely already on a weird eating schedule while you’re traveling, but it’s important to try and adjust to the eating times of where you are. A bowl of pho might be lunch for Americans, but it’s breakfast for the Vietnamese. This ensures that you’re eating freshly cooked food and that you can find the best and most popular places to eat.

If we want to be more present in the room, be it with a boss or a spouse, we should look to make ourselves more expansive and maybe even stand like Wonder Woman for a few minutes.

Instead of relying on our fickle willpower to reach goals, Charles Duhigg suggests we embrace the science of habit formation.

'NBA 2K17' is the best looking basketball game ever made

The only thing that was disappointing about the NBA Finals (where the historically great Warriors gave up a 3-1 series lead and lost to the Cavaliers) was that it meant basketball was over for a while. We'd have to somehow survive for six months without the sport that generates the sweetest highlights and the best Twitter memes.

There is justice in the world, though. The NBA is almost back, and accordingly, "NBA 2K17" is running a fast break to a console near you. Here's how fantastic this year's game looks:

The 10 best vegetarian foods from Trader Joe’s

$

Screen Shot 2016 09 13 at 4.53.43 PMI'm coming straight out with it. I love Trader Joe's. It's a perfect spot to stop and pick up a pre-made salad, some fresh produce, or some of their many varieties of chocolate-covered goodies. For real, they have chocolate-covered everything. Anyway, when I became vegetarian two years ago I found that Trader Joe's had a large variety of vegetarian and vegan options to try. I tasted a few of these options — here's how they stack up.

1. Thai Vegetable Gyoza

When I was younger, dumplings were my favorite food of all time. But since becoming vegetarian, I couldn't find any purely vegetable dumplings until now. When I found these in the frozen aisle, I was beyond excited. The texture and flavor exceeded my expectations, making these my number one choice.

2. Mango Jicama Slaw

This is the salad to grab if you want some crunch. I was incredibly pleased to find a mountain of cilantro piled on. The lime vinaigrette has a bit of a kick, but it's just the right amount of tang for the slaw.

3. Super Spinach Salad

This salad has literally all of my favorite foods combined in one, so I had to give it a try. I ended up devouring it, of course. The selection of prepared salads at Trader Joe's is incomparable to any other grocery store.

The Chevy Bolt still doesn't compare to Tesla's Model 3 (GM, TSLA)

Chevy Bolt Tesla Model 3

I'll say it upfront: if you're looking for a good electric car, the Chevy Bolt is not a bad option.

For $37,500, the Bolt offers a solid range of 238 miles on a single charge. That's impressive, especially considering that Tesla's Model 3 is only expected to have a range of 215 miles per charge.

But there's more to consider than just range, especially when the mileage difference is fairly small. Here are the advantages of waiting for the Model 3:

SEE ALSO: Here's how Tesla's cars have changed over the years

Let's give credit where credit is due: General Motors beat Tesla to the punch with rolling out an affordable, electric car. The $37,500 Chevy Bolt will hit dealerships before the end of 2016.

That's $37,500 before federal tax credits.

The Tesla Model 3, meanwhile, isn't slated to become available until the end of 2017 or early 2018.

It's worth keeping in mind, though, that Tesla CEO Elon Musk isn't exactly known for keeping deadlines. The Model X was delayed by three years, and a Wall Street Journal article points out that Tesla has failed to meet over 20 of its projections in the last five years.

Whether Tesla's Fremont, California factory plant can handle Model 3 demand has yet to be seen.

So if it's important for you to get a solid, affordable electric car as soon as possible, the Chevy Bolt isn't a bad option.

The Chevy Bolt currently has one of the best ranges of affordable electric cars on the market, beating out cars like the Nissan LEAF. (Keep in mind that pricier electric cars like Tesla's Model X and Model S still beat the Chevy Bolt when it comes to range.)

The Bolt also has some pretty impressive tech features, including its fully digital rearview mirror and its wireless charging console. It also has a number of safety features including collision alert, rear cross traffic alert, blind zone warning, and front pedestrian braking.

16 high-paying jobs for people who love history

Gentileschi, Artemisia Clio History Muse study painting

You know what they say — those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it.

That being said, history buffs aren't necessarily doomed to a life of subpar wages, despite the anti-humanities naysayers.

If you're dead set on pursuing your passion and entering a field that involves history or archaeology, you've actually got a couple of options when it comes to well-paid jobs.

We checked out the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database that compiles detailed information on hundreds of jobs, and looked at salary data on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' website to find positions with a median annual salary of over $60,000 that require an extensive knowledge of history.

O*NET ranks how important "knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilizations and cultures" is in any job, assigning each a "history importance level" between 1 and 100.

Judging from this list, it's mostly academia or bust for history lovers. Sadly, historians themselves didn't make the cut — as the median pay for that job was $55,800 a year.

Here are 16 high-paying positions with a history-importance level of 50 or higher:

23 successful people who wake up incredibly early

Tim Cook

They say the early bird catches the worm, and research suggests there might be some truth to the old adage.

Waking up with (or before) the sun allows executives like Apple CEO Tim Cook and "Shark Tank" investor Kevin O'Leary to get a head start on the day, knocking out tasks before the rest of the world has rolled out of bed.

Those "extra" hours with less distractions and fresh energy also give them a chance to do some creative thinking, fit in a workout, and spend time with family. And it should be noted that waking up early doesn't necessarily mean losing sleep — some of the smartest leaders understand that being effective means getting a full night's sleep.

Here are 23 early risers who may convince you never to hit snooze again.

Max Nisen, Aaron Taube, and Rachel Sugar contributed to earlier versions of this article.

SEE ALSO: 7 bedtime rituals that are hard to adopt, but will pay off forever

Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up at 3:45 a.m. and gets a head start on email.

The tech titan is known for getting up early.

According to a Time profile, "He wakes up at 3:45 every morning ('Yes, every morning'), does email for an hour, stealing a march on those lazy East Coasters three time zones ahead of him, then goes to the gym, then Starbucks (for more e-mail), then work. 'The thing about it is, when you love what you do, you don't really think of it as work. It's what you do. And that's the good fortune of where I find myself.'"

FLOTUS Michelle Obama is working out by 4:30 a.m.

While the president is known for getting very little sleep, he's got nothing on the first lady, who tells Oprah she starts her days with a 4:30 a.m. workout before her kids wake up.

"If I don't exercise, I won't feel good. I'll get depressed," she says, noting that it's easier to pull that off at the White House, where she has "much more support" than the average person.

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong starts his day at 5:00 a.m. but tries not to send too many early-morning e-mails.

The former Google executive tells The Guardian that he's "not a big sleeper" and wakes up at 5 a.m. or 5:15 a.m. every day to work out, read, tinker with the site, and hang out with his middle daughter, who is also an early riser.

Armstrong says he tries to hold off on sending emails until around 7:00 a.m.

7 things the iPhone 7 can do that the Samsung's Galaxy phones can't (AAPL)

iPhone 7 Samsung Galaxy S7

They're the two best phones in the world: The new iPhone 7 and Samsung's Galaxy S7.

Since the iPhone 7 just arrived, you're probably wondering what new tricks it can do. Here's a list of the most important features you'll only find in the iPhone 7.

Note: We're not comparing the iPhone 7 to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 until the recall and its related battery issues have been fully resolved.

SEE ALSO: The iPhone 7 review

The iPhone 7 Plus dual cameras give you 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.

Optical zoom means you can zoom without altering the image too much. Digital zoom essentially "crops" the image, which causes you to see more pixels. Samsung's cameras don't have optical zoom.

The iPhone 7 lets you take full advantage of Apple's new AirPods.

Even though the AirPods will work with any standard Bluetooth audio device, using them with an iPhone gives you more benefits like easy pairing and access to Siri.

The iPhone 7 has iOS, which tends to get the best apps first.

Developers tend to prefer iOS over Android, which means the best apps and updates for them tend to come to the iPhone first. That's not always the case, but if you value having the best apps before anyone else, the iPhone 7 is the phone for you.

For example, Nintendo is launching "Super Mario Run" on iPhone exclusively before the game comes to Android.

Louisiana State Football

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

That's right — college football season is back in full swing.

And as co-eds gear up for tailgates, home games, and fierce rivalry matches, some schools' pride and atmosphere clearly surpasses the rest.

Niche, a company that researches and compiles information on schools, ranked which colleges have the best football programs, primarily looking at the number of BCS bowl appearances, number of NCAA championship wins, and average attendance at home games. The ranking also took factors such as BCS bowl game wins, number of alumni in the NFL, and student survey responses into consideration.

For its ranking, Niche used the number of National Championships won recently (since 2000), but we included the number in the modern poll era — since 1936 — for reference. Check out a full breakdown of the methodology here.

16 shopping secrets that will save you time and money at Costco

costco shoppingCostco is a goldmine for bargains.

But the opportunity to save can be overwhelming, as you face seemingly endless free samples and bulk deals.

There are great bargains at Costco — even Morgan Stanley analysts say the retailer offers some of the best deals in the industry. However, to cash in on the deals, you need to know a few secrets.

Here’s how to make shopping at Costco worth the price of membership.

Make a beeline to the center of the store.

Many membership stores stick the best bargains in “center court,” the pallets in the middle of the store, Paco Underhill, author of "Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping,” told Bankrate.

Flashy displays at the front of the store, on the other hand, are going to be more expensive.

Keep an eye out for the "star."

If there’s an asterisk on a Costco price tag, that means the item can't restocked and what you see is the last in the store, reports Costco Insider.

So if your favorite seasonal product is marked with a star, it’s time to buy enough to last you till next year.

Split bulk items.

You might not have space to store 30 rolls of toilet paper, but your friends would probably be more than happy to split the cost of the $19.50 mega-pack, says Time.

Buying in bulk means major savings, so go big — and split the products up before going home.

The Bluetooth headphone market is crowded with tons of duds, but these 6 pairs are actually worth buying

zAfter nearly a century of use, it's beginning to look like the standard headphone jack is going away for people who listen to music casually.

The biggest and most recent example is Apple removing the headphone jack from the upcoming iPhone. So, if you buy the new iPhone, you've got three options: use the Lightning headphones they provide in the box, use your current headphones with an included dongle, or go wireless. My quest for wireless headphones started seven years ago, but I've only recently gotten to try out a bunch of Bluetooth headphones I actually like.

The headphones here are all good, but they're all especially good at a particular task. Be that adding a thick layer of bass to all of your music, or helping you block out all the noise on your commute. This guide is based on my experience with these headphones, and will be updated over time as I test more. My full review of each headphone is also included if you want to learn even more.

There's never been a better time to buy a pair of Bluetooth headphones. They've gotten a lot better over the last few years, and once you cut the cord, it might be hard to go back.

Best bang for your buck: 1More MK802

1More's over-ear Bluetooth headphones are all about giving you great bang-for-your buck sound. Unlike most headphones, you adjust the height of the headphone's ear cups, not the band. It's a design choice I like because it makes these headphones feel more sturdy overall.

These headphones have a little bit of a treble-bias, but it's not enough to get really annoying. They don't have noise cancelling, but because they're over-ear-headphones, they create more of a sound seal than on-ear models. If value is your number one priority, these headphones should suit you very well.

Best overall: B&O Play H8

Without question, the best Bluetooth headphones I've tried in terms of sheer sound quality have been B&O Play's H8's. Their clarity is as close to a wired headphone as I've heard, and they have a 3.5mm headphone port on them, if they run out of battery or you want to hear uncompressed audio.

They don't have active noise cancelling, and sit on your ear rather than over your ear, so they're not the best headphones for commuting. But, if you work from home, or want a pair of Bluetooth headphones for listening to music for pleasure, these are hard to beat.

Best for commuters: Sony H.ear

If you want a pair of Bluetooth headphones to help you block out your commute, this is your pair. While not quite as precise as the H8's, Sony's high-end Bluetooth headphones do deliver great sound. But, like I said earlier, it's the active noise cancelling that makes these headphones stand out.

It's good enough that I couldn't hear anything but my music during my commute to and from work. This included a couple of times when performers, boombox in hand, came onto the train. The only reason I knew they were on the train was when I caught everyone around me staring in their direction. These headphones also have the best on-headphone controls I've ever used. The triggers to play and pause music are easy to navigate and work really well. If you want to get lost in your music on-the-go, these headphones will get you there.
