America's most visited tourist attractions

$

Kim at Disneyland 2016.JPG

The INSIDER Summary:

• Many of the most popular attractions are found in major cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.
• Disneyland and Disneyworld both made the cut.

Every day, 10,000 people enter New York’s Grand Central Terminal—with no intention of catching a train. They come to slurp bivalves at the Oyster Bar or cocktails at the Campbell Apartment. They gawk at the ceiling embellished with gold constellations, browse shops, and take tours. It’s enough to make the landmark one of America’s top five most-visited attractions.

Location, of course, plays a role, and many of the most popular attractions are found in major cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. Size, too, matters. While the National September 11 Memorial had an impressive 4.5 million visitors during its first year (it opened on Sept. 12, 2011), it was dwarfed by Central Park with 100 times the area.

Yet for every traveler drawn to the big city, there are others who embrace the great outdoors. With its accessibility and size, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a natural choice for millions—more than 9 million to be precise, making it the No. 16 most-visited attraction in the nation.

Like it or not, the white-tailed deer, black bears, and brilliant foliage of the Great Smokies can’t quite compete with the popularity of Disney among Americans and international visitors; five theme parks made it into the top 20. To determine these rankings, we gathered the most recent data supplied by the attractions themselves or from government agencies, industry reports, and reputable media outlets.

Read on to find out which tourist attraction claimed the No. 1 spot with more than 41.9 million visitors in 2011. Were you one of them?

The Methodology: Our definition of tourist attractions included natural, cultural, and historic sites as well as recognized areas of limited geographic scope like the Las Vegas Strip. (We eliminated national parkways as they spread over extensive distances). Accurate numbers weren't available for some popular attractions such as Waikiki Beach in Honolulu and the Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey. In the case of transportation hubs like Grand Central Terminal or San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge that bring in both travelers and locals, we focused as much as possible on visitor data that excluded the strictly commuting set.

Times Square, New York City

Annual Visitors: 41,900,000

Neon signs, megastores, street performers, and historic theaters lure tourists to this five-block intersection that has become increasingly family-friendly. The addition of pedestrian-only areas with café tables, for instance, has made it more appealing to hang out here. At the small museum within the visitors’ center, the 2007 New Year’s Eve Centennial Ball drops four times an hour. Write a wish on a piece of confetti, and it—and two tons of other pieces of confetti—will flutter down on Times Square at midnight New Year’s Eve.

Central Park, New York City

Annual Visitors: 40,000,000

Locals and visitors alike find respite among these 843 acres of paths, lawns, lakes, and gardens in the center of Manhattan. Walk, skip, skate, ride a bike, row a boat or ride in a horse-drawn carriage. You can admire the views from 19th-century Belvedere Castle; check out the modest-size zoo; or join the fans who gather to pay quiet tribute to John Lennon at Strawberry Fields.

Union Station, Washington, D.C.

Annual Visitors: 36,500,000

Designed during the age of railroads and opened in 1907, this grand train station was built to be a monumental gateway—symbolized by its many arches—to America’s capital. The Beaux-Arts gem is also a gateway to commerce, with more than 120 shops and eateries. The 36 statues of Roman legionnaires lining the balcony were originally nude, but concerns that the public would be shocked led to the addition of strategically placed shields.

On November 4, 2008, more than 69.4 million Americans voted for then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) to become the 44th president of the United States — and the first African-American to hold the position.

Obama, then 47, earned 365 electoral votes and nearly 53% of the popular vote in a wider-than-expected margin of victory. His Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), captured 173 electoral votes and a little more than 45% of the popular vote.

There 20 days to go before Americans head to the polls to elect Obama's successor, and there are less than 100 days before the 45th US president takes office — here are 44 photos of America's 44th president.

Here's how Tesla's new self-driving system will work (TSLA)

Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a big announcement Wednesday night when the world had its attention turned to the presidential debate.

Musk announced that Tesla vehicles currently in production — which include the Model X, Model S, and future Model 3 — will be equipped with new hardware that will enable them to be driverless. A Tesla vehicle will drive itself from Los Angeles to New York by the end of 2017 as a demonstration of the new technology, Musk said.

Since driverless cars have yet to secure regulatory approval, owners of the new Tesla cars won't be able to turn on the self-driving capability just yet. However, the new hardware suite is providing Tesla cars with new Autopilot capabilities that customers could tap into as early as December of this year.

Tesla cars on the road today have Tesla's first-generation Autopilot system that allows the cars to automatically steer, change lanes, and merge onto highways. Convenience features built into the first-generation Autopilot also allow the cars to park themselves, both in perpendicular and parallel fashions.

The new hardware update is improving Autopilot, renaming it Enhanced Autopilot, and paving the way for Tesla cars to become fully autonomous later down the road. Here's our breakdown of the new system:

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk: Fully autonomous Tesla will drive across the country by the end of 2017

Tesla vehicles built between September 2014 and October 2016 were equipped with one camera used for Autopilot. But new Tesla cars are now being built with eight cameras that provide 360-degree visibility and 250 meters (820 feet) of range.

Tesla cars still come with one radar sensor, but it has enhanced processing that allows it to see through heavy rain, fog, dust, and even a car in front of it.

Tesla is also still using 12 ultrasonic sensors — however, they have been updated to detect hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the previous sensors.

New AldiThe discount grocery chain Aldi is taking aim at Whole Foods with a new store design.

Aldi debuted the new design this month at a store in Richmond, Virginia, and it looks almost identical to Whole Foods' new cheaper chain of stores called 365 by Whole Foods.

The Aldi store has softer lighting than its older stores, as well as a larger fresh produce section, wider aisles, and electronic displays on the walls.

Here's what it looks like.

The new game from the team behind 'Grand Theft Auto' is drop dead gorgeous

In 2010, a new video game classic was born.

"Red Dead Redemption" is widely regarded as one of the finest games made in the past 10 years. It takes the open-world environment of "Grand Theft Auto" and twists it into something entirely unique: a third-person, open-world action game set in the Old West — it's even made by the same folks behind "GTA"! We're talking mid-1800s, Reconstruction-era America, as it transitioned from a lawless frontier to modern civilization. This is not stuff that video games tackle.

And that's part of why people are so incredibly excited for "Red Dead Redemption 2," which was announced this week. We got our first look at the game on Thursday and, well, it's drop dead gorgeous.

30 everyday habits that can help you build wealth

walking

What are you doing every day that can help you grow your bank account? If you can't answer that question, it's time to develop some new money habits.

Just like with your physical health, your financial health depends on the daily decisions you make every day. While healthy habits such as eating better and exercising keep you fit, certain money habits can keep you financially comfortable and help you establish wealth.

Read on for money habits you should be doing on a daily basis if you want to be rich.

SEE ALSO: 13 habits of self-made millionaires, from a man who spent 5 years studying rich people

1. Spend less than you earn

This habit is Personal Finance 101. It's always going to be true that you'll never get ahead financially if you always have more money going out than coming in. The great news is there are two ways you can work on this habit: Focus both on growing your income and controlling your spending to live within your means.

2. Pay yourself first

When people say "pay yourself first," they mean you should take your savings out of your paycheck as soon as it hits your checking account to make sure you save something before you spend it all on bills and other expenses. The key to saving successfully is to save first, save a lot — 10 to 20% is often recommended — and save often.

3. Maintain an emergency fund

Virtually every personal finance expert agrees that an emergency fund is central to financial health. Building and maintaining an emergency fund can help you avoid debt and give you a reserve to draw from, which can also help you keep your financial goals on track even through life's setbacks.

Start small by saving at least one month's worth of expenses, and then work your way up to saving a larger emergency fund, such as a year's worth. Having several months' worth of expenses saved up can protect you against financial concerns when crises like a job loss or medical emergency come up.

14 of the most ridiculous excuses people have used to call in sick

$

excuses llama 15_1024

"Hi boss. I can't come into work today. I ate cat food instead of tuna and am deathly ill."

While that may sound like a completely ridiculous excuse, an employee actually used it this year, according to a new survey from CareerBuilder.

The survey, which was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder among 2,600 hiring managers and 3,100 employees, and found that 35% of workers have called in sick when they were feeling well over the last 12 months.

Some just "didn't feel like going in," while others "wanted the day to relax" or "needed to catch up on sleep." A few even played hooky because they needed to run an errand.

"In some companies, people don't feel comfortable telling their managers they need personal time off, so they will think of an elaborate excuse to get out of work," Rosemary Haefner, CareerBuilder's vice president of human resources, previously told Business Insider. "The more flexible the work environment, and the more open and honest the communication is across the company, and the less likely it is employees will feel the need to lie."

The excuses below aren't necessarily lies — but they're certainly odd and sound suspicious.

If you do need to take a day off, your best bet is to be honest, but not share too many details with your manager, Haefner said. "Many employers are more flexible in their definition of a sick day and will allow employees to use them to recharge and take care of personal needs."

If you choose to fib to get out of going to work, beware: While the majority (67%) of employers give their employees the benefit of the doubt, 33% said they have checked to see if an employee was telling the truth, and about 22% said they have fired an employee for giving a fake excuse.

The survey asked hiring managers and HR professionals to share the most suspicious excuses employees have given for needing to miss a day of work. "It never fails to surprise me what they say employees have revealed to them in order to get out of work," Haefner said. "The excuses have become increasingly creative over the years."

Here are 14 of the most ridiculous ones they shared:

9 tricks that will help you sleep on a plane

sleeping plane

The INSIDER Summary:

• Valerian root, allergy medicine, and Dramamine can help you sleep on a plane.
• So can gadgets like light masks and SleepPhones, and an old-fashioned cup of tea.
• Talk to your doctor about sleep aids.

A world where everyone could sleep on command—or, simply one with more comfortable airplane seats—would be a beautiful one. But until that fantasy becomes reality, some of us will have to rely on sleep aids and accessories to help us catch some Zs.

If getting to sleep on the plane or while traveling is a major problem for you, here are some natural sleep aids to ask your doctor about, plus a few packable accessories that might be the key to getting some shut-eye.

Editor’s Note: Anyone considering using a sleep aid, natural or otherwise, should ask their doctor first to ensure its use won’t negatively affect existing medical conditions or interact with other medications.

Valerian root

Melatonin

Melatonin is the chemical your body produces when your circadian rhythm tells you it's time to hit the hay. This means it's light and generally safe for use as a supplement, though Boston University health and nutrition expert Joan Salge Blake told me it isn't recommended by most doctors for long-term effectiveness. In my experience, it's not much help in quickly making you sleepy unless you've never used it before. Many people who use it sporadically, however, swear by it.

Antihistamines

Most big-name sleep aids contain antihistamines, which treat allergy symptoms, as an active ingredient. For example, the active ingredient in both Zzzquil and Benadryl is diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that can make users drowsy. This makes antihistamines a dual-use medication that's smart to keep on hand while traveling, but health experts say antihistamines can have negative effects if they're used long-term. Ask your doctor about using it as a general sleep aid.

After traveling the world, a family turned a public city bus into a gorgeous home

The INSIDER Summary:

• Scott and Emily Manning traveled to 12 countries in 12 months with their son, Carter.
• They bought an old city bus for $3,000 and turned it into a mobile home while Emily was pregnant with Zellie.
• Said bus is currently their permanent residence, as their travels helped them embrace a minimalist approach to life.

For Scott and Emily Manning's two adorable kids, the classic "The Wheels On The Bus" song takes on a whole new meaning.

The couple spent 12 months traveling to 12 different countries — their infant son Carter in tow — and really took to the minimalist lifestyle of living out of backpacks.

Not wanting to give up this new way of life, they decided to transform an old Denver city bus into a cozy mobile home with their newest addition, Zellie. Said bus is currently their permanent residence, and they document their adventures on their blog, "Where We Roam."

Scott Manning spoke to INSIDER from his office inside the bus, which is currently based in Oregon.

After graduating from college in 2012, Scott and Emily Manning couldn't find a house that fit their needs and finances. They decided to travel, instead.

"We went as far as Florida and as high as Maine, and got to see a lot of things in between," Scott Manning said.

"That really kickstarted our desire to travel more full-time, which turned into this project we developed called '12 Countries in 12 Months,'" he said.

Originally it was going to be just the two of them traversing the globe, but Emily got pregnant.

Everything you need to know about Tesla’s new self-driving system (TSLA)

$

Tesla Model S

Tesla cars currently in production, as well as the upcoming Model 3, will be equipped with the hardware to become fully self-driving, the electric car maker announced Wednesday.

"The foundation has been laid for fully autonomous, it's twice as safe as a human, maybe better," CEO Elon Musk said during a media call Wednesday evening.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Tesla vehicles will start zipping around autonomously right away.

Here’s a closer look at what the company is doing and how it plans to roll out the technology.

SEE ALSO: Here's how Tesla's new self-driving system will work

What exactly has changed?

Tesla will now offer Enhanced Autopilot, which is an improved semi-autonomous system, and a system that offers full self-driving capability.

Consumers will be able to choose between an Enhanced Autopilot system and a system that has full self-driving capabilities.

Enhanced Autopilot is basically a new and improved version of Tesla’s current Autopilot system with improved capabilities, including the ability to match speeds to traffic conditions, exit the freeway automatically, and change lanes automatically without input.

Tesla’s full self-driving system, on the other hand, will be able to achieve so-called Level 5 autonomy, Musk said.  This means that once the software is ready and regulations are in place, Tesla cars will be able to drive without human intervention.

Tesla vehicles with this full self-driving system will be capable of operating on highways and city streets.

What’s the difference in hardware between Enhanced Autopilot and the system with full self-driving capability?

All of Tesla’s cars going forward will be equipped with the hardware that makes full autonomy possible.

This includes eight cameras, 12 ultrasonic sonar sensors, a forward facing radar, and a new onboard computer that provides 40 times the computing power of the previous generation of Autopilot.

The cameras along with the radar and other sensors give the vehicle 360 degrees of visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range.

However, the hardware in use will depend on the system you decide to purchase.

Enhanced Autopilot uses four of the eight cameras to operate, while the full self-driving system takes advantage of all eight cameras.

How will Tesla's fully self-driving system work?

It sounds like the whole process of using the fully autonomous system will be pretty easy.

According to Tesla's website, you can simply get in the vehicle, say where you want to go, then the car will calculate the best route and drive you to your destination.

If you do not say a destination, the car will look at your calendar and automatically drive you to the destination listed. If nothing is on the calendar, the car will take you home, the company states on its website

"Your Tesla will figure out the optimal route, navigate urban streets (even without lane markings), manage complex intersections with traffic lights, stop signs and roundabouts, and handle densely packed freeways with cars moving at high speed," the company said.

"When you arrive at your destination, simply step out at the entrance and your car will enter park seek mode, automatically search for a spot and park itself. A tap on your phone summons it back to you."

You can learn more about how the system will work here.

The 50 smartest colleges in America

Caltech graduateWe recently ranked the 50 best colleges in America based on how well they prepare students for success, focusing on graduation rate and early-career earnings. Next, we wanted to find out which schools enroll the smartest students.

Jonathan Wai, a Duke University Talent Identification Program research scientist, created a ranking exclusively for Business Insider of the smartest US colleges and universities based on the schools' average standardized test scores.

While these tests are often criticized, research shows that both the SAT and ACT are good measures of general cognitive ability, since they rely on a person's ability to reason. Therefore, these scores give a reasonable snapshot of a school’s overall smarts.

Last year, information was taken directly from the US News & World Report. We updated that ranking by including all the schools that report average SAT and ACT scores to the government. ACT scores were converted to the SAT scale for the purposes of this analysis.

Once again, the Pasadena-based California Institute of Technology took the top spot on the list, and the University of Chicago, Harvard, Harvey Mudd College, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology rounded out the top five schools.

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, access to a remote, cozy cabin becomes an appealing prospect—especially when the cabins are the architectural wonders that are found in the new book The Hinterland: Cabins, Love Shacks and Other Hide-outs.

The book explores the wondrous forms that the humble cabin can take. In the Southern United States, for example, there is a three-bedroom cabin built into the trees. Connected by rope bridges adorned with fairy lights, this cabin is part-tree house, part magical hideaway.

From the Italian mountains to a Danish archipelago, the locations of the cabins are almost as appealing as the architecture itself. Among the more unique in the book is an observation hut perched above the wilderness of Latvia, and a wooden cabin nearly camouflaged from view under snow-covered trees in Hungary.

The INSIDER Summary:

• In the past 100-plus years, New York City has changed drastically. But in other surprising ways, it looks the same.
• Here are some photos of NYC landmarks and important spots circa 1900 compared to today.

New York has been one of the world's biggest and most important cities for centuries. Even in the year 1900, it was a sprawling metropolis.

Since then, it's only grown. The towers are taller and more tightly close together, there's more people than ever before, and billboards sweep across the city's buildings.

We dug into the Library of Congress photo catalog and found some images of New York City landmarks and important spots from around the year 1900, then and compared them to what they look like today. Some of the dates aren't precise because the year the photos were taken in are unknown. Nonetheless, the comparisons demonstrate just how much the city has changed — and how it's surprisingly stayed the same.

Drag the slider tool across each image to compare how the same places look — 100 years apart.

Times Square has changed a lot in the past century. It's still the center of theater life — but it's now a lot more commercialized.

Aaron Rodgers is playing terribly and Eddie Lacy is injured, so I expect the Packers to win this one easily. By the way, just as the Steelers should retire their awful jailbreak uniforms, so too should the Packers get rid of whatever they wore last weekend.

The pick: Packers -7.5

New York Giants (-3) at Los Angeles Rams (in London, 9:30 a.m. ET)

Josh Brown needs to be cut immediately and out of the NFL for good. Meanwhile, this game will be played at Twickenham Stadium, which is a phenomenally British name for a stadium, and I'm inclined to never bet on a team from the west coast playing in Europe.

The pick: Giants -3

Minnesota Vikings (-2.5) at Philadelphia Eagles (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

I've incorrectly predicted the outcome of the Eagles game every single week this season.

The pick: Vikings -2.5

Tesla Model S autopilot

The new and improved Tesla Autopilot is coming.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that, as of Wednesday, people can buy Tesla cars that come with a suite of new hardware that improves Autopilot's capabilities like never before. The new version of Autopilot, aptly named Enhanced Autopilot, will be made available via over-the-air updates in December, pending regulatory approval. It will cost $5,000.

Musk also said the hardware will allow Tesla cars to be fully driverless further down the line.

Here's a breakdown of Enhanced Autopilot's capabilities:

First generation Autopilot provides Tesla with a host of semi-autonomous capabilities, especially following its software upgrade, Version 8, in September. Since that time, Tesla cars with Autopilot have been able to auto steer, change lanes with the tap of a signal, look for parking spots, park perpendicularly, and self-parallel park.

The first-generation system also comes with active cruise control, the ability to exit off ramps when the signal is on, and be summoned remotely from your garage.

But Enhanced Autopilot adds to those pre-existing capabilities. The new system relies on four cameras, a radar sensor, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a new onboard computer system to work.

You can get a more thorough breakdown of the hardware and how it differs from what was used for first generation Autopilot here.
