11 hydrogen-powered cars in the works right now

lexus hydrogen car

It may seem odd that so many automakers are developing hydrogen-powered cars.

Not many people have heard of the technology, and from an infrastructure standpoint, purely electric vehicles make more sense. For example, there are 14,943 electric stations in the United States, and only 31 hydrogen stations, according to the US Department of Energy.

But a lot of work is being done behind the scenes to make hydrogen-powered cars a reality.

Here's a look at all the hydrogen-powered cars in the works:

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk explains why hydrogen cars are 'incredibly dumb'

1. Toyota has been working on hydrogen-powered cars the longest, having put 23 years into the technology. Here we see its hydrogen car, the Toyota Mirai.

The automaker has been selling the Toyota Mirai in Japan since December 2014, but began sales in California in October 2015 — marking the first time hydrogen-powered vehicles were sold in the United States.

The automaker has sold 836 Toyota Mirais in California as of October of this year, a Toyota spokesperson told Business Insider. Toyota plans to sell 30,000 a year worldwide by 2020.

The Toyota Mirai can drive for 312 miles before needing a refuel and reaches a top speed of 111 miles per hour.

The Mirai has a frontal radar system so it can detect potential collisions and automatically employ the brakes.

NFL WEEK 14: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

$

Andy Reid

We're entering the final month of regular-season football, which means games are simultaneously more — and less — important than ever.

For every important divisional game with playoff seeding implications, over these next four months we'll also have games like the Jets vs. the 49ers (four wins between them!) and the Browns vs. the Bengals. Games, in other words, that couldn't be more meaningless.

But why focus on the bad stuff? Week 14 is notable because it has a particularly great slate of primetime games, which has been a big criticism of the league this year.

Seriously, look at this:

Thursday: Chiefs (9-3) vs. Raiders (10-2), first place in the AFC West on the line.

Sunday: Cowboys (11-1) vs. Giants (8-4). Important playoff implications for the Giants, and the Cowboys are the best team in football.

Monday: Ravens (7-5) at Patriots (10-2). Bitter AFC rivals with plenty of recent history.

There's an argument to be made that the league should get rid of Thursday night games, or maybe even Monday instead. But when the games are as good as these, you won't hear anyone complaining.

LAST WEEK: 8-6

SEASON: 94-90-5

Oakland Raiders (+3.5) at Kansas City Chiefs (Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ET)

The best Thursday night game of the year and possibly the best game of the entire Week 14 slate. I like the Chiefs at home here mostly because of how bad the Raiders defense has been.

The pick: Chiefs -3.5

Denver Broncos (+1) at Tennessee Titans (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Neither team can afford to lose this game, but I like the Broncos to win this one pretty handily.

The pick: Broncos +1

San Diego Chargers (+1.5) at Carolina Panthers (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Panthers bounce back after a disgraceful one (not just talking about Cam's tie here) in Seattle.

The pick: Panthers -1.5

Soon-to-be 'first kid' Barron Trump will continue at his Manhattan prep school — here's where the other first kids went to school

In November, President-elect Trump and his wife Melania announced that the family will keep their son Barron enrolled in his New York City-based day school rather than moving to Washington, D.C. right away.

A spokesperson for the Trump's noted that there is "obviously a sensitivity to pulling out a 10-year-old in the middle of the school year."

Barron attends Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School, located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

The elite school runs students about $47,000 a year.

With an eye on first kids who were teenagers or young adults when their parents lived in the White House, as far back as President Richard Nixon, Business Insider took a look at elementary, middle, or high school's they attended.

Take a look below to see who attended prep schools in the nation's capitol, and who went elsewhere.

Barron Trump — Columbia Grammar and Preparatory

If Barron's $47,000-a-year tuition payment seems steep, it's nothing compared to the cost of secret service protection in New York City for the first family, which is estimated to be $1 million a day.

Sasha Obama — Sidwell Friends School

Sasha is a sophomore at the Washington, D.C. based school that has educated multiple first kids. The Obamas have said they will stay in D.C. until Sasha graduates from high school. Sidwell costs students about $40,000 a year.

Malia Obama — Sidwell Friends School

How to get a shy person to open up to you in 5 minutes or less

$

shy, embarrassed

Shyness, according to Psychology Today, is "the awkwardness or apprehension some people feel when approaching or being approached by other people."

Shy people often "desperately want to connect with others, but don't know how or can't tolerate the anxiety that comes with human interaction."

John Stoker, president of DialogueWORKS and author of "Overcoming Fake Talk," says that 40% or more of the population would classify as "shy."

That means there's a good chance you'll have to deal with shy people at the office, networking events, or client meetings – and it may behoove you to know how to approach them.

We asked Stoker for his tips on making a shy person feel at ease, and getting them to open up quickly.

Here are the six steps he shared:

This is an update of an article written by Natalie Walters.

SEE ALSO: The 10 best jobs for introverts

1. Start with an introduction and an easy question

"Hi, I'm Jane Doe from _____. Who are you?"

While this may seem like a blunt introduction, Stoker says that you have to start with a simple, innocuous question like this to build a rapport.

"Asking questions is the easiest way to deepen or create a relationship with someone," he says.

2. Affirm the meeting

"If you make the first move by introducing yourself and taking an interest in the person, you will help to set them at ease, which will help you to establish a relationship with the person that could pay huge returns," he says.

But you'll want to go a step further and tell them how excited you are to be meeting them.

Try something like "I'm so glad we had a chance to meet today,""I'm so happy we're finally meeting!" or "It certainly is a pleasure to meet you today."

3. Use their name — often

"People love to hear their name," Stoker says.

So address them by it whenever possible.

It tells them that you really listened to their introduction and that you're engaged in the conversation.

Some of the most dangerous threats that could be employed against the U.S. military or homeland are the chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

While attempted dirty bombs or anthrax attacks have usually been stopped by the intelligence and police services before the attacks took place, there’s a group of Marines and sailors who train and constantly prepare to react to a successful attack.

Dubbed the Chemical, Biological Incident Response Force, or CBIRF, these Marines are ready to go into nightmare attacks after they happen.

“CBIRF is the only unit in the Marine Corps trained to respond to the worst scenarios imaginable here and abroad,” Erick Swartz, senior scientist with CBIRF and designer of the CBIRF battle drills, told a Marine Corps journalist. “At any moment CBIRF can and might be called on to save lives.”

Here’s a look at America’s 911 call for a nuclear, chemical, or biological attack:

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth and the fifth person to go to space, died at age 95 on Thursday.

Glenn had been hospitalized for more than a week prior to his death, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Glenn achieved a number of extraordinary feats throughout his life and career, including flying 149 combat missions in World War II and the Korean War; spending a total of 218 hours in space; becoming a United States senator (D-OH); authoring the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act of 1978 to fight the rise of nuclear weapons; and being awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, among many other things.

The 11 iPhone apps I can't live without

iPhone apps

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to the apps I keep on my phone: If I don't use an app at least once a week, it gets axed.

Part of the reason is because I don't have much of a choice — 16 GB of storage fills up quickly.

But I also want my phone to be as useful as possible and to be clutter-free. It's the most important tool for doing my job, staying connected to my family, and entertaining me when I'm bored.

Over the last few years, I've settled upon a handful of must-have apps that help me do all three of those things.

Here are the 11 apps I couldn't get through life without:

SEE ALSO: The 10 most popular albums on Apple Music in 2016

1. Venmo

How did we all go out to group dinners or split rent before Venmo? As someone who rarely has cash, this app helps me stay in good standing with my friends and keep track of paying rent and bills on time. I was admittedly a late adopter — letting an app access your bank information is scary, after all — but I now use it almost every day.

2. VSCO

I'm a fan of Instagram, but I'm an even bigger fan of editing the photos I post to Instagram. The VSCO app helps me do that. It's easy to use, easy to make minor adjustments or test out filters, and the app often adds new filters to its marketplace (although not all of them are free). While Instagram is catching up when it comes to editing capabilities, VSCO is still the best photo editing app out there.

3. Google Calendar

The best part about Google's apps is the seamless integration across all platforms. The Calendar app is is synced with Gmail and Maps, so my meetings automatically get added to the app, then I can look up where my next meeting is with one click. Plus, Google's Calendar is a lot more colorful and easy to use than Apple's.

'Hairspray Live!' was pretty good — here are the 7 standout moments from the show

Hairspray Live NBC

The INSIDER Summary:

• Jennifer Hudson turned out two show-stopping performances.
• Ariana Grande was an adorable Penny Pingleton and stole the show.

In 2013, NBC started the trend of the live musical with The Sound of Music Live! starring Carrie Underwood as Maria. The event was a hit for the peacock network, garnering nearly 22 million viewers. On Wednesday night, the network continued what it started with the latest live musical, Hairspray Live!

Maddie Baillio stepped into the iconic role of Tracy Turnblad for Hairspray Live!and was surrounded by an all-star cast featuring Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein and Kristin Chenoweth.

The live musical event was filled with memorable moments, from Jennifer Hudson's breathtaking performances to its all-star guest cast. Here are the six standout moments from Hairspray Live!

Jennifer Hudson's performances of "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "I Know Where I've Been"

Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson showed up to work during Hairspray Live! and turned out two show-stopping performances. Hudson played the beloved Motormouth Maybelle and sang her face off during "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "I Know Where I've Been," once again reminding America that she was voted off American Idol too early.

Ariana Grande stealing the entire thing as the adorable Penny Pingleton

Ariana Grande stole Hairspray Live! as Penny Pingleton and her performance was so endearing that we could hardly breathe. The adorably ditsy and consistently lost Pingleton was the perfect part for Grande, who once again showed off her live-TV chops: Grande earned rave reviews earlier this year when she hosted Saturday Night Live.

Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle

Leave it to the Broadway veteran to show everyone how it's done. Kristen Chenoweth unsurprisingly gave one of the most memorable performances of the evening as Velma Von Tussle. She powered through her rendition of "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs" and those final notes she hit were classic Chenoweth.

Bugatti Chiron 19

A new Bugatti doesn't come along very often. In fact, the Bugatti Chiron is just the third production car to carry the vaunted badge in the last 25 years and just the second car this millennium.

As the successor to the game-changing Veyron, the Chiron has the unenviable task of following in the foot steps of an automotive icon.

Fortunately for Bugatti, the Veyron is about as competent of a start point as one can ask for. And Bugatti's director of design Achim Anscheidt is one of the best in the business.

Anscheidt, a veteran of VW Group and Porsche's design departments, joined Bugatti as its design boss in 2004 just as the Veyron was readied for production.

With the Chiron, Anscheidt got his shot at the momentous task of creating the first new Bugatti in a decade. During its development, Bugatti built more than 30 prototypes that completed more than 300,000 miles of testing and went through more than 200 sets of tires.

With a $2.6 million asking price, it will have to live up to the high bar set by the ground-breaking Veyron.

Here's a closer look at the new Bugatti Chiron.

How digital is saving TV companies from extinction

$
0
0

adele james corden

Why would a late-night host on a major network potentially cannibalize his own ratings to conquer YouTube?

For James Corden, it was all about getting his name out to a new audience.

CBS's "Late Late Show" made this clear with its most popular segment, "Carpool Karaoke."

In it, Corden drives music's biggest stars around in a car while singing together on the artist's biggest hits (and sometimes others'). In February, the show's Adele segment became the most-watched video on YouTube.

"We wanted to make good content for television, but the thing we have least control over is ratings. The thing we have slightly more control over is relevance. The digital world is where you can make your relevance felt,""Late Late Show" executive producer Rob Crabbe told Adweek.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to traditional TV companies taking a page out of the digital playbook. The stakes couldn't be higher. Big shifts in viewership habits have been occurring right under their noses and now threaten their future viability.

The crisis for television companies is very real. The current "big four" are experiencing incremental decline in viewership year-over-year. Even more problematic is that their TV audiences are getting older and younger viewers are increasingly turning to alternative digital sources for entertainment.

A Nielsen study in October showed that in the last five years, there has been a 40% drop in traditional TV viewing by 18-to-24-year-olds. The time they previously dedicated to watching TV has moved to other activities and on multiple devices.

With that kind of wake-up call, it's no wonder entertainment dinosaurs are either teaming up with digital partners or trying to create their own new digital universe.

Here's a look a some of the biggest challenges traditional TV is facing and how they're finding the solutions in the digital and online world — with a few notable exceptions:

SEE ALSO: Here are the most popular Netflix original shows ranked, according to a research company

DON'T MISS: Here's how much the highest-paid stars on TV actually make

Challenge: Millennials are watching traditional cable TV less, and many aren't watching it at all.

While once the threat to traditional TV was cord-cutters, viewers who are canceling their cable TV and turning to digital, now there's cord-nevers. These younger adults have never been cable customers and will probably never become ones. They're watching TV online, through streaming services, and on multiple devices.

It's become imperative that traditional TV find a way to get its content in front of this group. CBS is doing this through creating its own streaming TV service, CBS All Access. For between $5.99 and $9.99 (its non-commercial subscription), subscribers get every episode of current CBS series, many classic CBS shows, and at least 90% of the country can watch its live CBS feed.

CBS has a record of being the most-watched network on TV, but its audience skews older than the other three major networks. CBS All Access, though, is proving successful in being able to get its programming in front of younger audiences. Among the service's one million subscribers, 30% are millennials (roughly 12-to-34-year-olds), according to a person with knowledge of the service who spoke with Business Insider.

Other TV networks offering their programming through a standalone subscription streaming service include HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Lifetime Movie Channel.

Challenge: Fans want TV when and where they want it.

The whole concept of live viewing is dying. With the huge amount of television offerings today and a limited amount of time to watch them, viewers want their shows available according to their personal schedule.

Cable initially confronted that with DVR and On-Demand, but for viewers, limits remain on the availability of episodes and the ability to watch on different devices.

Streaming offerings like Netflix and CBS All Access are providing fans with more episodes of their favorite shows and availability across multiple devices.

Amazon Prime Video and Netflix then took that a step further by making content available for download to watch offline.

Plus, there's a growing battle among DirecTV Now, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and soon YouTube to offer all the diversity of a cable subscription with a streaming product.

Challenge: Netflix and other subscription services have a wealth of data on their users, which gives them a leg up on programming decisions.

Netflix is able to cull data from its subscribers regarding which programs viewers watch, and how. That gives Netflix a huge advantage over traditional TV when it comes to deciding what shows to produce, renew, or revive.

Traditional TV is beginning to bridge that gap via its own subscription services. For example, CBS All Access could see the viewing numbers for past seasons of "Star Trek." That gave it the confidence to move forward and produce "Star Trek: Discovery," the first TV show in the franchise in 11 years.

But there are other ways to get that data without turning to a subscription service. For example, Universal Cable Productions (UCP), NBC Universal's production studio for cable shows, recently announced a partnership with Wattpad, the 10-year-old online home of original stories with a community of 45 million active writers and readers.

In April, the story site created Wattpad Studios with the goal of leveraging its talent and its user data to produce projects with entertainment companies.

"If I can be a bit brazen, we're even one-upping Netflix in some cases," Aron Levitz, who heads Wattpad Studios, told Business Insider of the richness of the company's data.

"I mean, if you’re looking at existing streaming services, whatever they are, even existing TV, you’re looking at data on content that already exists," he added. "We want to take that a level deeper, and that’s what we’re able to bring to our partners like UCP. We're not only able to look at what’s trending and big, but to take trends we see off Wattpad and say, ‘What are stories that meet that trend?’ So, you’re actually able to combine data. Where the data of the streaming service may end, we can just continue it, find even more data, and be more successful for them."

One of Wattpad's first partnerships was with the major Filipino channel TV5, starting in 2014. The Philippines is Wattpad's second-biggest market, the US being its first. Each week TV5 airs "Wattpad Presents," in which a story directed at the teen demographic is produced into that week's program.

"Almost solely on data, we look at the top stories in the country, take one up, and adapt it for TV," Levitz explained.

"Wattpad Presents" helped TV5 raise its youth viewership in the time slot by 31%. Its two major competitors, ABS-CBN and GMA, saw just a 3% increase and a 2% decrease in teen viewership for the same time slot, respectively.
