embarrassed lying woman laughingThe INSIDER Summary:

• People who blush easily are perceived as more trustworthy.
• Studies have shown that they're more empathetic and generous.
• They also report higher rates of monogamy.

Blushing can make an awkward situation feel a million times worse, especially when someone has the nerve to point out how red your face is. (Pro tip: don't be that person.)

It turns out that there are actually some scientifically-proven advantages to being easily embarrassed, and they're nothing to be ashamed of.

SEE ALSO: A shocking number of all the calories you consume in a day come from sugary drinks

You're a better romantic partner

It seems that glowing red cheeks actually are endearing to some people. At UC Berkeley, researchers found that men and women who blush easily reported higher levels of monogamy.

You're more generous

According to an article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, "individuals who are more embarrassable... behaved more generously than their less embarrassable counterparts" by giving away more of their raffle tickets in a study.

You seem more trustworthy

A 2011 study pitted participants against a computer for a classic prisoner's dilemma: if you condemn your opponent you walk free, if you rat each other out you both get two years in prison, and if you both stay silent you both only get one year. Participants were more likely to trust a blushing opponent than a nonblushing one.

6 science-backed ways to get over your ex

Couple clouds

Going through a break up can be challenging. Whether or not you were the instigator, the pain of moving on is hard to handle.

Since relationships aren’t one size fits all, people react in different ways. That’s why it’s so difficult to narrow down a single cure for heartache. But don’t fret — while there may not be a easy fix, there are tips and tricks that the professionals swear by.

As psychologists working in New York City, Dr. Karen Weinstein and Dr. Michael Zentman have seen their fair share of patients battling through a break up. They don't claim to have all the answers, but they do have general sense of how to help people heal a whole quicker.

Here are six ways to get over a break up:

SEE ALSO: 4 behaviors are the most reliable predictors of divorce

1. Ditch the rose-colored glasses.

"Reflect on the relationship for what it was, likely it was neither all good nor all bad," Dr.Weinstein suggests. "Resist the common tendency to idealize the relationship. It's very common to only recall and focus on the wonderful aspects of the relationship. This makes it even harder to accept the reality that it's over and is the equivalent of 'denial' in the stages of grief."

One way to reflect would be to make a list of things you weren't happy with in the relationship. By the end, you might realize that the separation was for the best.

2. Pick up your reading glasses.

Another tip from Dr. Weinstein, albeit slightly cheesy, is to hit up the self-help section. She recommends the books "It's Called A Breakup Because It's Broken: The Smart Girl's Breakup Buddy" by Greg and Amiira Behrendt as well as"Don't Call That Man!" (revised under the more contemporary title "Don't Text That Man!") by Rhonda Findling.

"The whole field of self help books does seem to assume that only women struggle with breakups, which is far from the reality," she admitted. "Regardless, there are some thoughtful gems of advice and support in [these books]."

3. Talk it out.

"The best thing someone can do is talk about their feelings about the loss with close friends and other loved ones," Dr. Zentman says. "Hearing yourself say how you’re feeling and having a witness can be very helpful."

Grab drinks or dinner with a close friend who's willing to listen for a while and see where the conversation leads you. You may even learn something about yourself.

"There will be much wisdom to gain if a person can be self-reflective and figure out what they contributed to the breakup," Dr. Zentman adds.

Sup money lovers?

My "awesome ideas" folder is piling up over here,  so I thought I'd release some of them on you today to help turbocharge your goals.

All these come from emails and comments that YOU ALL have sent over the months, so big thanks for dumping out your smarts on us! It all helps!

See if any of these ideas stick with you:

SEE ALSO: A man who retired at 34 shares a spreadsheet that helped him get there

DON'T MISS: 10 items that lose value the more you spend on them

1. The financial notebook

This one comes from Sarah who shared it on Millionaire Day this year:

"I started keeping a financial 'notebook.' I write in it every time I do something that moves me closer to the FI mark. (Ok,  so I am rather liberal with what counts … reviewing the kids' 529s counts, as much as paying an extra $100 to the debt monster.) Flipping through it helps keeps me motivated in the dry spells and reminds me when it's time to review some bill or policy!"

So pretty much, a financial diary. Which is much more juicier than a normal one, if you ask me!

2. An awesome way to charge your kids rent

From Paul:

"I am going to provide my kids a (mostly) judgment-free place to live when they are done with schooling. My only caveat is I will charge them rent, and that rent will be in the form of proof that they are maxing their 401(k) and IRA and investing 50% of their net pay. As long as they do that, they can live here until they get married."

Another great benefit: They'll be able to move out faster with all that money saved!

3. Chart your net worth progress against your goals

LOVE LOVE LOVE this from Bill Furst:

"I wanted to pass along a neat little tracker I put together that I use monthly (now, and previously just yearly) with my own net worth updates. It basically tells me that I am on track for my retirement goal ($$ and time) with a visual chart. The larger the green section, the more ahead I am. You just input in the grey boxes and the yellow parts calculate for you.

"I filled this in with your stats dating all the way back from 2008 … I did yearly from 2008-2015, and then monthly from 2016 on. Line 8 is your historical net worth amounts. I don't know what your time line is for your cool $1M, but if it's 2020, you're ahead of the game."

So smart, right? Looks like the first year and a half I was falling short of my goal of "a million," but from there we took off and are set to hit it earlier than expected. I really like this because it gives you a super fast idea of how well you're doing or not in relation to your OWN goals and not anyone else's. And it'll now be yet another addition to my sturdy spreadsheet I've been tweaking over the years — woo!

I'll have to make a template of it one day for y'all, but for now here's the spreadsheet Bill created for any of you who'd like to copy/test it out yourself: Net Worth Comparison Chart.

Thanks Bill! (And your wife is right — you totally need to share your thoughts online somewhere! Start a blog already so we can check out all your other ideas you've got brewing.)

Fire trucks can’t reach too far past the coast, and plenty of fires break out on ships and oil platforms off American shores. When the fires happen in America’s territorial waters, it often falls to America’s Coast Guard to rescue the survivors and fight the flames.

Here are nine photos of the Coast Guard protecting lives and property by acting as firefighters at sea:

For smaller fires, it’s often enough to pump water onto them, and the Coast Guard is lucky that plenty of salt water is usually available.

Mosul Iraq ISIS flag selfie

The big fight for the Iraqi city of Mosul is yet another case of ISIS losing the ground it seized in its blitz across Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Just last week, Iraqi forces reclaimed the eastern half of Mosul, and it's only a matter of time until the entire city is back in Iraqi hands. It's just the latest in a string of setbacks for the terror group, which has lost upwards of 50% of its territory so far.

Whether ISIS fighters happen to die fighting, or flee their positions to fight another day — they often leave a treasure trove of ordnance, propaganda, and intelligence materials that can prove helpful against them.

Here's what was left behind after ISIS took off.

David Choi contributed to a previous version of this article.

And ISIS flags abound, like this one in an abandoned building.

The 20 best tech jobs in America right now

man working cafe coffee computer laptop phone multitasking career

Once again, tech jobs dominate Glassdoor's list of the 50 best jobs in America.

But, it turns out, you don't have to work in the tech industry to have one of the best tech jobs this year.

As Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor's chief economist, tells Business Insider, companies across all industries, including healthcare, finance, and retail, are hiring workers for these needed positions. "Any organization today with a mobile app, web presence, or digitized data are struggling to fill jobs like data scientists, software engineers, and mobile developers," Chamberlain says.

Glassdoor's 50 Best Jobs in America report identifies careers with the highest overall "job score," which is determined by weighing three factors equally: earning potential (median annual base salary), job satisfaction rating, and number of job openings.

For a job title to be considered, it had to receive at least 100 salary reports and 100 job satisfaction ratings shared by US-based employees over the past year. The number of job openings per job title represents active job listings on Glassdoor as of January 1, 2017.

"This report reinforces that the best jobs are highly skilled and are staying ahead of the growing trend toward workplace automation," Chamberlain says.

He explains that the skills helping workers stay ahead of automation are creativity, judgment, and flexibility.

"Many of the jobs on this list require proficiency in these 'soft' skills," he explains. "In tech, that includes data science and engineering, which requires the ability to creatively solve problems to deliver business value."

Below are the 14 tech roles among Glassdoor's 50 best jobs, as well as the six next best tech roles according to Glassdoor:

'Beautiful. Great plane': Trump was 'in awe' of his first flight on Air Force One

Donald Trump Air Force One

President Donald Trump took his first flight aboard Air Force One— the presidential jet — on Thursday to address a joint gathering of House and Senate Republicans in Philadelphia, and the experience left him awestruck.

"Beautiful. Great plane," Trump said about his new ride, according to pool reports.

Trump said his old plane, a Boeing 757 was a "good one," but that Air Force One is a "very special plane for a lot of reasons," per the pool.

"He continues to react the same way he has throughout his time in his presidency, in awe of the splendor of this plane and what the White House represents," Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer, who was on the flight, told reporters.

While Trump's old plane was nothing shabby — it has two bedrooms and a full bathroom with 24-karat gold fixtures — it pales in comparison to the presidential jet, a larger Boeing 747.

Air Force One, though lacking in gold, boasts 4,000 square feet of interior space, with a fully-equipped Situation Room, and a "flying Oval Office." The plane's fuselage can also withstand a nuclear blast from the ground, and has flares hidden in the wings to confuse enemy missiles.

Trump took his first flight on Marine One, the presidential chopper, as well.

I traveled to the middle of the desert to see 'The Door To Hell' — Turkmenistan’s crater of fire

Turkmenistan Door to Hell

At the heart of Turkmenistan’s Karakum Desert sits a crater of fire the size of a football field that’s been perpetually burning now for almost fifty years.

Locals have suitably dubbed it the 'Door To Hell,' officially it’s known as the Darvaza Gas Crater. It’s not volcanic. That’s not magma, this sinister flame pit was man-made and thought to be the result of a Soviet-era gas drilling accident, yet Turkmenistan has no official record.

To those travellers who’ve defied all odds in having their visas granted to this closed nation, reaching the ‘Door To Hell’ is at the top of their list. I was no different, and on an overnight camping trip, I finally got to visit what camel spiders everywhere have been talking about for years.

This is a photo essay covering my visit to the ‘Door To Hell’:

SEE ALSO: I visited North Korea and snuck out these eye-opening photos

On my journey to the crater, it was commonplace to see herds of wild camels roaming freely.

These ships of the desert blindly followed the motorway, chewing their cud, and didn’t show great respect to passing traffic. We also saw camel carcasses lining this same motorway, so it appeared that, for drivers, the feeling was mutual.

Without further ado, I present the 'Door To Hell.' Darvaza Gas Crater. This was my first shot of the site, and my initial impression was that it looked like an impact crater from a meteor strike.

Gas prospecting gone wrong, however, is the accepted explanation — Soviet engineers in 1971 bit off more than they could chew, drilling and hitting a gigantic underground gas cavern which then collapsed, forming a sinkhole and sucking the entire drilling rig into it. But nobody knows for sure. The Soviets allegedly concealed the extent of the disaster, leaving no paper trail, not even an incident report. As for fatalities? The official line is that there were none. But how we ‘know’ this, I am unsure.

This is the only remnant of the collapsed drilling rig still sitting outside the crater’s rim. It’s thought the sinkhole swallowed and buried everything else that was above it.

You may be wondering why steps haven’t been taken to either harness the crater’s energy or just extinguish it entirely. It’s likely because people simply do not care. Turkmenistan has the fourth largest natural gas reserves on earth, so an investment here at such a volatile site would be high risk, low reward prospect. If extinguished, the gas wouldn’t stop, you’d have to find a way to cap every fissure within proximity of the site, which would be expensive and inefficient. And, without that investment, dousing it would be counter-intuitive; burning the natural gas is preventing its toxic components from lingering and hinders the methane’s potential as a greenhouse gas.

Banks are watching your social media — here are 5 things to avoid if you want a career in finance

$
0

CRI headshots 01

LONDON – If you've just had a big night out, you might want to think twice before posting the gory details on Facebook or Instagram.

Especially if you want to work in finance.

Banks and hedge funds are increasingly checking social media accounts of potential hires to see if they will be a responsible, sober employee.

Investors are employing the same techniques to decide who gets to manage their money. They often look for specific personality traits and psychological profiles before trusting a person with their wealth.

Specialist firms carry out the checks and Business Insider spoke to one of them – Corporate Resolutions – to find out what triggers the biggest and brightest red flags. The company, based in New York, was set up by a former FBI agent.

"We cruise social networking sites to ensure the potential executive or money-manager is not commenting on or posting pictures," that potential employers would find distasteful, Joelle Scott, a senior vice president at Corporate Resolutions, said.

Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram offer a huge repository of public information about private people. Here's what companies like Corporate Resolutions look at.

1: Drug use – "You’d be shocked to know how many executives flaunt illegal behavior on social networks," said Scott.

One of the UK's most high-profile bank scandals involved former Co-operative Bank CEO Paul Flowers being secretly filmed handing over £300 in cash for drugs such as crystal meth and ketamine in 2013.

2: Salaciousness – "It may not be 'illegal,' but some types of behaviour are embarrassing, and employers don’t want any part of it," Scott said.

Big banks may see salacious behaviour as a risk factor. Last year, the transcripts of text messages between a former Goldman Sachs salesmen and an alleged prostitute known as "Michella" were released in a court case between the Libyan Investment Authority and the US bank.

3: Threatening or harassing statements about friends, co-workers, celebrities or political figures – "People forget that using Facebook or Twitter to express extreme opinions about a politician puts a potential employer in a very uncomfortable position. Often, they’ll move on and look at other qualified candidates," said Scott.

The last thing a bank needs is a loose cannon.

Elon Musk is a charming, ridiculously smart, incredibly successful businessman.

Elon Musk

He's spent his career bucking the status quo, and he seemingly has too many jobs.

He's the CEO of Tesla Motors, the incredibly successful company behind the re-birth of all-electric vehicles. He's also the CEO of SpaceX, a company that exists to "revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets." He also serves as the chairman of SolarCity — a company focused on making solar energy commonplace.

When he's not busy transforming transportation, space travel, and energy use, Musk plays video games. Well, he does lots of other things, but video games are one of those things. And it turns out that Musk has excellent taste in games. Here are some of his favorites that we gathered from a Reddit AMA and his Twitter account:

"Overwatch"

"Overwatch" isn't just a good game — it's the best game that came out in 2016, folks. And Musk's been playing it because he has fantastic taste in games. He was quick to get hip — his first tweet about the game was in June 2016, soon after the game launched in May.

And, since Elon Musk is Elon Musk, he's playing the game on PC. Not only is the game prettiest there, but it's the platform where he has most control over performance. And if we know anything about Elon Musk, it's that he's got a thing for being in control. The guy's CEO of two major companies, at once!

BONUS:His main is Soldier 76, which I'd personally call a bit on the boring side. He's a good character, no doubt, but as a main? Come on, Elon. You're more sophisticated than that.

"BioShock"

On paper, "BioShock" isn't anything special: a first-person shooter set in an underwater city that's fallen into disrepair.

In reality, "BioShock" is a genre-pushing, narrative-driven shooter that questions the base level concepts of how video games work. If I said any more, I'd ruin the game.

That said, it's not a huge surprise that Musk is a fan: The game is an Ayn Rand-inspired exploration of objectivism, capitalism, and power. It's also a tremendously stylish, innovative game.

The "Mass Effect" series

Moving to a subject that's near and dear to Musk's heart, the "Mass Effect" series focuses on space travel, interstellar diplomacy, and the future of the human race. He's called the second game in the series, "one of the best games ever."

And he's right: "Mass Effect 2" is seen by many as one of the best games ever made. Presumably he's getting pumped for the launch of "Mass Effect Andromeda" this coming March!
