Warsaw

Expats move abroad for new job opportunities, for relationships, or even just to live a simpler life.

In a new survey by InterNations, the world’s largest network for people who live and work abroad, the company asked 14,300 expats, representing 174 nationalities and living in 191 countries or territories, to rate 43 different aspects of life abroad on a scale of 1-7.

One of the sub-indexes was the Cost of Living, where the data was based solely on the ratings given by respondents to the general cost of living in their respective country of residence, also on a scale of 1-7.

67 countries were included in this index. The minimum sample size per country were 50 respondents. Over 45 of those countries had more than 100 respondents.

So, Business Insider took a look at the top 13 places where it was the cheapest in the world to live for expats.

13. Romania —The government's spending rises and tax deductions are helping to stimulate more activity within the country, which is boosting job opportunities for locals as well as expats. Meanwhile, the cost of living remains super-low.

12. Spain —Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia are brimming with job opportunities and salaries are one of the best in Western Europe. But the country, also famed for it's great weather, carries little cost for accommodation, food, and transport.

11. Malta —The country leaped up the top of the list this year as not a single respondent said they were completely dissatisfied with their personal finances, meaning they were happy with the balance between money coming in and money going out on the cost of living.

Tragic images from inside the University of Mosul — a recently-liberated ISIS stronghold

The interior of a burnt building of the University of Mosul is seen during a battle with Islamic State militants, in Mosul, Iraq, January 14, 2017.

The Iraqi army recently announced that they had 'liberated' large parts of eastern Mosul from ISIS forces.

In that part of the city was Iraq's second-largest educational institution — the University of Mosul, which had been an ISIS stronghold since the summer of 2014.

Military officials said that taking the university was a crucial strategic gain in the battle against ISIS' caliphate in Iraq.

Over the two and a half years of occupation, thousands of rare books and manuscripts were destroyed, courses were cancelled and buildings were burnt to the ground.

Professors with links to the west or Iraqi government were sacked or executed and women were treated abhorrently, with many being punished for talking to men. Women were reportedly banned from enrolling in any subject other than medicine in 2015.

Scroll down to see the tragic, haunting remains of what was one of the Middle-East's crowning educational institutions.

Once milling with over 30,000 students and 4,200 faculty members, the University entrance is now a scorched husk, a shadow of its former eminence.

Source: International Business Times.

Despite ISIS occupation, the University remained at least partly open and functioning throughout the period. "For us law students at Mosul University, our only dream when we left high school was to go to Mosul University," Kawkab Salman Kawkab, a law student, told the Associated Press in 2016. "It is an esteemed university, known globally and regionally. People speak of it wherever you go."

Life studying under the extreme militant group was hard, one student recounted the "horrifying and disturbing" time he was stopped by ISIS soldiers to witness a public beheading on his way home from the shops.

What Wall Street expects from Apple's earnings call today (AAPL)

tim cook

Apple reports earnings for its first quarter of fiscal 2017 after market close today. It's the holiday quarter, which is always Apple's biggest.

Investors are expecting its revenues, which have declined year-on-year for the past three consecutive quarters, to rebound this quarter.

But they will also be focused on whether its services business — the App Store, Apple Music, and Applecare warranties — is becoming Apple's second firehose of profit after hardware sales.

Here we map out analyst estimates going into Tuesday's earnings.

  • Consensus revenue: $77.4 billion
  • Consensus EPS: $3.23
  • Consensus 12-month price target: $133

UBS is bullish on both Apple's long-term growth and in iPhone sales for 2017.

UBS analysts believe that investors are not pricing in Apple's long-term revenue growth.

They take the view that "Apple is preparing for the next era of personal technology — the Ambient Paradigm," contradicting the view held by investors that the iPhone is the "end of the road."

The analysts are also bullish on iPhone sales for fiscal year 2017 because of growth in the installed base (the number of people with an iPhone and therefore potential customers for an upgrade).

  • Revenues estimate: $76.8 billion
  • EPS: $3.20
  • 12-month price target: $127

Pacific Crest Securities: "Regardless of FQ1 results, Apple seems likely to be range-bound in the next few months as investors contemplate the next iPhone cycle and we see implications of potential policy changes under the new U.S. administration."

Analysts at Pacific Crest Securities don't believe that Apple's stock price will move much before the third fiscal quarter of 2017, "when we should get more evidence around the lineup, costs and potential pricing in the next iPhone cycle."

  • Revenue: $76.5 billion
  • EPS: $3.19
  • 12-month price target: $127

Maxim Group: "[We] continue to believe Apple is at the precipice of a multi-year investment up-cycle."

Maxim Group is extremely bullish on Apple in both the short, long, and medium term.

Its estimates for the first fiscal quarter's revenues are around $5 billion more than the consensus, and its 12-month price target is more than $30 ahead of the Nasdaq consensus.

  • Revenue: $82.1 billion
  • EPS: $3.51
  • 12-month price target: $164

11 things every driver needs to know before driving in the snow

$

Ferrari FF Review

Winter has been milder than normal in many parts of the US, but that doesn't mean snowstorm won't happen. And when it comes to driving, few things are more difficult to deal with than snow.

It is possible, of course, to drive and to drive safely in the white stuff. You just need to prepare yourself properly for the experience.

Here are 11 basic rules and guidelines to follow:

SEE ALSO: 10 things that make changing a tire much, much easier

1. Know when NOT even think about driving.

So you've driven in the snow before and you've got a vehicle that can handle bad conditions. Does that mean you can deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at you?

It does not.

No one should be driving in a blizzard — for two main reasons. First, the simple fact that your car is on the road makes it more difficult for the authorities to clear the streets. If you get stuck, that's obviously a problem for the snow plows.

Second, if you do get stuck, you're an immediate distraction from what the emergency services really need to be doing, which is helping people who weren't stupid enough to take to the roads.

In a genuinely major-league snow storm, you should stay put and leave your vehicle alone, unless there's an absolute emergency.

2. Make sure you have a vehicle that CAN handle the snow.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is possible to manage a rear-wheel-drive car in the snow. You don't need all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. You just need to know what you're doing.

That said, if you've never taken your BMW 3-Series out in snow before, it's best to not test your non-existent skills. You would be better of with a front-wheel-drive car, with the weight of the engine over the drive wheels.

AWD and 4WD are better — but they're also no guarantee that you won't get stuck. Again, how much experience you have is important.

The bottom line is that if you know your car and have dealt with snow before — and you're not in the middle of a blizzard — you're OK. If not, it might be best to take your car out for a bit of practice.

3. Two words: SNOW TIRES.

Whether you have a rear-wheel-drive, front-wheel-drive, or AWD or 4WD vehicle, your best hedge against trouble in the snow when driving is snow tires.

You can put all-season tires on your car, but when there's serious snow on the ground, snow tires are your best friend. They're made of different compounds than summer tires, enabling them to maintain traction in the cold. The treads are also designed to deliver better grip and prevent snow and slush from building up on the tires.

Winter tires aren't a failsafe; you can still slip and slide and get stuck with them. But they're designed to deal with snow and in the opinion of many experts, a good call if you live in a region where snows are frequent and heavy.

The incredible life of Roger Federer, the highest-paid tennis player on Earth

Roger Federer won his 18th career tennis Grand Slam on Sunday, beating longtime rival Rafael Nadal in a nail-biting five-set match at the Australian Open following six months out of the game due to injury.

The former world number one is one of the most successful players of all time. He has won the men's singles tournament at Wimbledon alone seven times since 2003, as well as 24 Masters Tournaments all over the world. Despite his ranking of 17th in the world before the Australian Open, he has now risen back to tenth place.

The 35-year-old is not only one of the most talented athletes on the planet, but also the most profitable. Forbes named him the world's highest-paid tennis player in 2016, earning £54.3 million ($68 million) from professional wins and million-pound sponsorship deals with companies from Nike to Credit Suisse.

In 2016, the London School of Marketing named him the world's most marketable athlete and, while the Swiss sports star leads a relatively private life compared to wealthier athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Federer also spends his money on the finer things in life. He also owns his own charity, the Roger Federer Foundation, which supports educational projects in southern Africa and Switzerland.

From tailored tennis rackets to Swiss mansions, here's how Federer makes and spends his fortune — and his minimal spare time.

This is 35-year-old Roger Federer, the highest-paid tennis player in the world. He has an estimated net worth of £255.9 million ($320 million).

His success trails back to the age of eight, when he started playing tennis. Born in Basel, Switzerland on August 8, 1981, his Swiss father, Robert Federer, and South African mother, Lynette Du Rand, encouraged him to play sport at an early age.

His parents both worked for the same pharmaceutical company.

Here are 6 other times the US has barred immigrants

$

Donald Trump

On Friday, Donald Trump barred citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries - Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen - from entering the United States for at least the next 90 days.

He also suspended the US refugee programme for 120 days, specifically banning Syrian refugees until further notice, reduced the number of refugees who would be admitted this year to 50,000 and specified that refugees who were from a religious minority and fleeing religious persecution should be prioritised.

A federal judge has blocked part of Trump's executive order , ruling that travellers who have already landed in the US with valid visas should not be sent back to their home countries, and protests in response to passport holders from some Arab countries, including US green card holders, being blocked from passing through customs or prevented from boarding US-bound planes, have taken place at airports across the country.

But this is not the first time that the US has banned immigrants from its shores. Over the past 200 years, successive American presidents have placed restrictions on the immigration of certain groups.

Here are six occasions when laws have been passed to restrict some people from entering the country.

1. Exclusion of the Chinese

President Chester A. Arthur.

Signed on May 6, 1882.

The Chinese Exclusion Act, which banned "skilled and unskilled labourers and Chinese employed in mining" from entering the US for 10 years, was the first significant law restricting immigration to the country. It came at a time when the US was struggling with high unemployment and, although Chinese made up a very small segment of the country's workforce, they were nevertheless scapegoated for its social and economic woes.

The law also placed restrictions on Chinese who were already in the US, forcing them to obtain certificates in order to re-enter if they left the country and banning them from securing citizenship.

The act expired in 1892 but was extended for a further 10 years in the form of another - the Geary Act. This placed additional restrictions on Chinese residents of the country, forcing them to register and to obtain a certificate of residence, without which they could be deported.

This changed in 1943 with the Magnuson Act - which allowed some Chinese immigration and for some Chinese already residing in the country to become naturalised citizens, but which maintained the ban on property and business ownership. This came at a time when China was a US ally during World War II.

2. Jewish refugees during World War II

President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

As millions of people became refugees during World War II, US President Franklin D Roosevelt argued that refugees posed a serious threat to the country's national security. Drawing on fears that Nazi spies could be hiding among them, the country limited the number of German Jews who could be admitted to 26,000 annually. And it is estimated that for most of the Hitler era, less than 25 percent of that quota was actually filled.

In one of the most notorious cases, the US turned away the St Louis ocean liner, which was carrying 937 passengers, almost all of whom are thought to have been Jewish, in June 1939. The ship was forced to return to Europe, where more than a quarter of its passengers are thought to have been killed in the Holocaust.

3. Anarchists banned

President Theodore Roosevelt.

Signed on March 3, 1903.

In 1903, the Anarchist Exclusion Act banned anarchists and others deemed to be political extremists from entering the US.

In 1901, President William McKinley had been fatally shot by Leon Czolgosz, an American anarchist who was the son of Polish immigrants.

The act - which was also known as the Immigration Act of 1903 - codified previous immigration law and, in addition to anarchists, added three other new classes of people who would be banned from entry: those with epilepsy, beggars and importers of prostitutes.

The act marked the first time that individuals were banned for their political beliefs.

When Justin Timberlake first hit the scene in 2000, he was just another boy band member. Since then, he's become the man to watch after many hit songs and movies, not to mention his adorable marriage with actress Jessica Biel.

But let's never forget the old Justin Timberlake — the one who walked red carpets with popstar Britney Spears, had ramen noodle hair, and made some questionable fashion choices.

The world without JT would be a sadder place. Here's his style evolution, from start to finish:

Justin Timberlake's red shades and braids were on display when he headlined with *NSYNC for KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert in Los Angeles back in 2000.

For the boy band's 2000 world tour, bandannas were a performance favorite for JT.

Here are 21 gifts — both experiences and objects — that men actually want.

Go to a concert together.

Sometimes an experience is better than just giving an object. Get tickets to a show that you and your man can enjoy together to create memories.

Let him feel like a kid again with an adult onesie.

No matter what character you choose — from a dinosaur to a superhero — an adult onesie is just embarrassing enough so that he'll only want to wear it in private with you.

Plus, you can get a matching one for yourself.

If you're already bought him a tie, get a tie bar, too.

For those who may not know, a tie bar clips a tie to a shirt while also adding a bit of flair to an outfit.

Not only is it one of the few accessories most men actually want to wear, but by keeping the tie close to the body instead of hanging loose, it makes every suit look even more sharp.

The 15 best new TV and movie additions to Netflix in February, ranked

$
0
0

Santa Clarita DietThe INSIDER Summary

•February is going to be a big month for Netflix releases from new original series to our favorite movies of all time.
•New additions to watch this February include American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson, Superbad,
Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special, Finding Dory, and Santa Clarita Diet.

Look, there’s a lot of things that we at Screen Rant love about life. A nice walk through fresh snow, a cozy dinner with friends or family, curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book. But – let’s be honest – there’s no better moment in a day than sitting in front of your television or laptop and finally seeing that red and black Netflix logo pop up. Anything bad about our day fades away and all we’re left with is the excitement of endless streaming entertainment.

Last month – despite January generally being a horribly depressing month – was full of exciting new Netflix content that literally filled our lives with joy. And we say literally because we’ve been watching a lot of A Series of Unfortunate Events lately and the dialogue has both literally and figuratively caused us to change the way we speak. But since those eight episodes went by too quickly, and we’ve already binged our way through every movie and special that Netflix has released, we can’t wait to get streaming on everything that Netflix has to offer this February.

February is going to be a huge month for Netflix. With new movies and some very flashy series debuting this month, we can’t wait to blow off all of our responsibilities and watch everything we can as soon as it’s all available. As we do every month, we are sorting through the best things coming to Netflix this month and telling you what you need to watch.

15. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) – Feb 1

Somewhere in the world at any given time an eternal debate rages regarding The Nightmare Before Christmas. Is it a Halloween film? Is it a Christmas film? If this is truly a Tim Burton film, then where in the hell is Johnny Depp? Regardless of your answers to any of the above answers, the fact remains that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great film that you can never see too many times.

Sure, the film may be best viewed around the holidays (Halloween, Christmas, whatever), but watching it in February doesn’t diminish it in any way. The songs are still as magical as ever, and the animation is pure nostalgic goodness. To throw this film up on Netflix is to get a good dose of childhood cheer, and you could do much worse than starting off the month by watching something that feels like hot chicken soup thawing your winter-ravaged veins.

14. The Blair Witch Project (1999) – Feb 1

Something about the cold, desolate months of January and February are perfect for horror – a fact that movie studios have caught onto in recent years with the release of horror classics often coming in the winter. So there’s perhaps no better way to spend a dreary February day then holed up inside with one of the best horror movies of the last two decades. Wrap a blanket around you, hide from any type of forest that may be near you, and start streaming The Blair Witch Project.

Although found footage horror has exploded since Paranormal Activity, it was really The Blair Witch Project that proved the merits of the horror subgenre. Famously, many viewers had no idea if what they were watching was real when it debuted in theaters, and the film still holds up today as being shockingly realistic. While we now know that this is simply a scripted micro-budget film, seeing the shaky-camera and hearing the behind-the-scene screaming of the main characters still sends chills down our spine that no horror movie has been able to match since.

13. Babe (1995) – Feb 1

Out of context, Babe is a headscratcher of a movie and an even more confusing footnote in history. It’s a kid’s film about a talking pig that grossed $254 million at the box office against a $30 million budget. It was also nominated for seven Academy Awards, including best picture and best director. And, this bears repeating once again, it’s a kid’s film about a talking pig.

But, look, Babe is a f***ing delight! Everything about this film is handcrafted to be one of the most enjoyable experiences you’ll ever have with a family film. Regardless of your age or your experience with talking pigs, there’s nothing but joy to be had within the confines of Babe’s running-time. The perfect film to click play on no matter who’s in the room watching with you, Babe is everything you remember it being and more. They just don’t make movies like this anymore.

If you're making $100,000 a year, you're doing pretty well for yourself, especially considering that the median household income in the US is $53,889.

But if you live in the metro areas of Seattle, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, a low-six-figure household income barely puts you among the top half of earners, let alone in the top 20%.

In Stamford, Connecticut, for example, you'd represent the top 48% with a $100,000 household income.

That's according to an interactive tool from The New York Times that allows you to enter your household income and compare your earnings across 344 metro areas throughout the US.

Here, we've highlighted 21 US cities where a $100,000 annual household income isn't enough to crack the top 20% of earners.

The most insane 2-on-1 dates on 'The Bachelor' in history

$

bachelor in paradise

The INSIDER Summary:

• Every season on "The Bachelor" two contestants have to battle it out on a 2-on-1 date, where one of them gets sent home at the end.
• Producers tend to pit enemies in the house against each other making for some very dramatic scenes.
• Seasons 15, 19 ad 20 of "The Bachelor" have had the craziest ones, but JoJo's season of "The Bachelorette" stands out too.

The Bachelor knows how to make finding love uncomfortable. The entire premise of the show revolves around turning love into a competition. The Bachelor has many strategies for intensifying the feeling of competition among contestants. There are group dates in which one contestant is singled out at the end of the night, cocktail parties in which contestants wait hours to see if they get to stay, and eliminations that keep everyone on their toes. Nothing however is more competitive, intense, and uncomfortable than a Bachelor two-on-one date. It's the classic, "two contestants, one date, one rose, one stays, one goes." As we head into the one for Nick's season, let's take a look back at the most insane Bachelor two-on-one dates ever.

For this list I've included dates from both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette because equal opportunity awkwardness. Audiences won't have to wait long for a Nick Viall Bachelor two-on-one date, as it's commencing Monday night. The Corinne vs. Taylor showdown promises to be so dramatic, and I can't wait. It may take the cake as the most explosive yet — even more so than Chad's from last Bachelorette season.

Before we indulge in the new two-on-one date, though, let's take a walk down awkward memory lane.

JoJo Fletcher — Chad & Alex (Season 12)

Chad Johnson and Alex Woytkiw hated each other on JoJo's season, so, naturally they were put on the two-on-one date together. It was an intense date because I seriously thought these dudes were going to wrestle one another in the woods. Chad had the height but Alex had the army training; it would have been a close fight.

In the end, JoJo chose Alex over villain Chad on this hiking date. JoJo would later break Alex's heart after making out with him on top of a horse. You can't make this stuff up people.

JoJo Fletcher — Derek & Chase (Season 12)

JoJo's season of The Bachelorette has the distinction of having not just one, but two two-on-one dates. While the second two-on-one date was less tense than the first, it did involve awkward dancing and a fan favorite being sent home. It pitted early frontrunner Derek Peth against Chase McNary. It ended with JoJo sending home Derek in a move that surprised fans. At least we forever have this gif of JoJo dancing with the two men. I could watch it on repeat forever and ever.

Ben Higgins — The Twins (Season 20)

While not a traditional two-on-one, Ben Higgins took both Emily Ferguson and Haley Ferguson on a date in their hometown of Las Vegas. It's one thing to compete against a stranger on a two-on-one, another to compete against your identical twin. It made sense, though, that one had to go. Dating both twins was getting a little creepy and even good boy Ben Higgins couldn't pull it off.

Ben ended up choosing the more outgoing twin, Emily, but this date definitely brought the intensity. It was also super awkward. Ben didn't end up engaged to either twin, which was a good thing since they were both super entertaining on Bachelor In Paradise.

Incredible photos of an eerie ship graveyard in the middle of the Uzbekistan desert

Moynaq shipwreck ship graveyard in desertThe INSIDER Summary:

•  The Moynaq Ship Graveyard is literally a ghost town in the middle of the desert.
•
It was once home to a busy fishing port as well as one the four largest lakes in the world.
• The lake began to shrink when Soviet irrigation projects diverted the rivers that fed it. While this could be reversed, Uzbekistan doesn't have the funds to do so.

In Uzbekistan, an eerie ship graveyard filled with hauntingly beautiful shipwrecks beckons.

The Moynaq Ship Graveyard is literally a ghost town in the middle of the desert.

It was once a busy Soviet fishing port on the Aral Sea — one of the four largest lakes in the world back in the day — but today, nothing but desert remains.

Let's take a closer look and see how these ships came to be stranded in the middle of the desert.

Once one of the four largest lakes in the world (it was 26,300 square miles), the Aral Sea dried up when the rivers feeding it were diverted for irrigation purposes.

Aral Sea translates to "Sea of Islands," named for the over 1,100 islands it was once home to. Today, dozens of ships are disintegrating in the scorching desert heat.

Today, the nearest shore is almost 100 miles away.

Many successful people love to read.

Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk have shared some of their favorite reads, Defense Secretary James "Mad Dog" Mattis was known to carry around a 6,000 book library between military posts, and Bill Gates says he reads about 50 books a year.

That doesn't mean that you necessarily need to be a bookworm to become a success.

Here are five successful individuals who say they don't read books:

DON'T MISS: 11 books President Obama thinks everyone should read

Kanye West

Yeezy may be the co-author of "Thank You and You're Welcome," but he notes that he typically stays away from books.

"Sometimes people write novels and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed,"he told Reuters in 2009. "I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book's autograph. I am a proud non-reader of books. I like to get information from doing stuff like actually talking to people and living real life."

Fleur Pellerin

In 2014, the former French minister of culture said she hadn't read any literature for two years.

"I admit without any problem that I have had no time to read over the past two years," she said, according to the New York Times. "I read a lot of notes and legislative documents. I read a lot of news."

Donald Trump

Unlike Barack Obama, the new President of the United States has made it quite clear that he's not a huge reader.

When Megyn Kelly pressed him to name his favorite book (besides the Bible or his own ghost-written, best-selling work, "The Art of the Deal"), he picked "All Quiet on the Western Front."

However, when asked to name the last book he read, Trump went on to say, "I read passages, I read areas, chapters, I don't have the time,"according to the New Republic.

12 celebrities you didn't realize were refugees

As the refugee crisis remains in the international spotlight, it's a good time to take note of what they're capable of.

Refugees are people who have escaped their home countries to flee war, natural disaster, or persecution. Today, there are more than 65 million refugees in the world, the most since World War II.

In spite of their struggles, refugees have made great contributions to society. Inspired by the New York Times's list of 25 great books by refugees in America, here's a list of refugees who are so accomplished that they've become international celebrities.

Singer Regina Spektor was born in the Soviet Union in 1980. Her family fled from Moscow to the United States when she was nine.

Both of Spektor's parents studied music and gave her training as a classical musician from a young age. In the United States, she continued her studies and eventually became a pop musician, with songs like "Samson" and "Us."

When she was one year old, singer and actress Rita Ora's family escaped ethnic persecution in Kosovo.

Ora was born to Albanian parents in Yugoslavia (now present-day Kosovo). With the disintegration of Yugoslavia, ethnic Albanians faced persecution. She relocated to London, and now she's a singer, actress, and model.

Actress Mila Kunis came to Los Angeles from Ukraine on a religious refugee visa in 1991.

"After the Holocaust, in Russia you were not allowed to be religious,"Kunis told The Sun. "So my parents raised me to know I was Jewish. You know who you are inside."

15 moments from 'The Walking Dead' comics that are too dark for TV

Lori Gets Killed in The Walking Dead ComicsThe INSIDER Summary:

• Robert Kirkman's comics of The Walking Dead take the violence to the next level.
•The comics of the show are too dark for TV and can definitely leave you with nightmares.
The show adds occassional humor and romance to lighten the mood.

The Walking Dead is darkness personified. Though the AMC series has recently taken flack for its violence and subject matter, it doesn’t hold a candle to the comics. Whereas the TV show leans on the occasional humor and flickering romance to add much-needed levity, a sustained reading of Robert Kirkman’s comics is like getting stuck on a roller coaster in the deepest rungs of hell. Even if you try to exit the ride, you’ll never be able to clear the images from your mind.

When things get bad, they only get worse, and if things seem good, prepare yourself for disaster. While the larger differences between The Walking Dead show and comics are well documented, the truly chthonic nature of the source material deserves attention of its own. A quick review of the comic’s darkest moments will prove just how gentle the show is by comparison, and how hopeless Rick Grimes and the survivors truly are.

Here are 15 The Walking Dead Comics Moments Too Dark For TV:

15. The governor removes his zombie daughter's teeth and kisses her

There are a great many diversions from The Walking Dead comic and television show, but none encapsulate those differences more succinctly than The Governor. His repulsive treatment of his daughter is at the peak of his madness. Following a series of soulless acts, The Governor reaches his apotheosis when he yanks out his reanimated daughter’s teeth with a pair of pliers. It’s a gruesome image, but before we even grow accustomed to the visual, it’s immediately supplanted by something far worse: the Governor moving in for a full-on make out session.

Unsurprisingly, he vomits instantaneously, but reminds himself that he has yet to get accustomed to the taste of dead daughter flesh. When asked about this reprehensible moment, creator Robert Kirkman said, “[He’s] the worst case scenario for what living in this world does to people…I was just trying to think of the worst things The Governor could ever do.” Mission accomplished, good sir.

14. Dale gets cannibalized

In the valley of the apocalypse, it’s hard to recognize the lesser of two evils. The Hunters were loosely adapted in The Walking Dead show, and anyone familiar with the source material can easily understand why. As also happens in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, these post-apocalyptic warriors become full-fledged cannibals who use their own children as food. This primitive behavior is rightly seen as an end-of-the-line survival tactic, but The Hunters take things a step further by expanding their appetite to poor Dale Horvath himself.

After suffering a zombie attack and bite, Dale is knocked unconscious before awaking to a garish sight. With his leg roasting on a spit, Dale earns the privilege of watching the Hunters dine on himself. They taunt him between bites before he bursts into laughter and shouts, “Ha! Ha! Ha! Tainted meat!!” To Dale’s great delight, the Hunters spew chunks to rid themselves of the freshly-poisoned zombie flesh. Though a similar fate befell Bob Stookey in the show, his cannibalization doesn’t quite stack up.

13. The medieval torture of the hunters

In both the comics and the show, there’s little doubt that Rick Grimes will do anything to survive. Though a man of great sensitivity, he also has the capacity for extreme brutality. Immediately after finding a legless Dale Horvath and realizing what the Hunters had done to him, Rick flips off the switch on sentimentality and embraces his inner sadist.

Taking the Hunters captive, Rick teams up with Michonne, Abraham, and Andrea to exert maximum hurt. What ensues is a series of executions and tortures that puts Rick in a league alongside the Governor and Negan himself. In slowly killing and mutilating the Hunters, the comic panels become so relentlessly disturbing that it’s little wonder they didn’t get adapted for the show. Rick even threatens to eat them in the same way they devoured Dale. Had AMC incorporated the real justice shown to the Hunters, Rick would have become a dubious hero with little to no contrast against the villains to come. Indeed, he later shows remorse in the comics for the atrocities committed against the cannibals.
