mariah carey

Mariah Carey is back with a new breakup single, and the rapper Vince Staples has delivered one of his most rousing tracks yet.

Music is easier than ever to get and harder than ever to sort online, so we've picked the best songs out this week that you can easily stream right here:

Mariah Carey - "I Don't" (feat. YG)

She might not do any vocal gymnastics on her new single, but Mariah Carey is gloriously to-the-point in her kiss-off (after her own personal engagement recently fell through).

Vince Staples - "BagBak"

The 23-year-old California rapper is already showing he's one of the singular talents of his generation. With a groaning industrial production, the quick-hitting single touches on racial politics and President Donald Trump, keeping it colorfully real throughout.

"Tell the one percent to suck a d--- because we on now," Staples says. He doesn't sound like he's kidding around.

Sampha - "Reverse Faults"

Sampha's gorgeous, propulsive electronic soundscape ushers in even more stunning singing from the English artist.

A relationship expert reveals the only dating rules you should follow

$

first date couple smiling laughing

The INSIDER Summary:

• Ditch "rules" about how long to wait before calling or texting and just be natural.
• Be direct and proactive. If you want something, ask for it.
• Stay true to yourself and focus on what you want.

Dating is complicated enough without tripping over tons of extraneous "rules" about how relationships are supposed to work. (Who made those rules, anyway?)

Author and relationship expert Susan Winter shared the only guidelines you should follow in order to create the relationship you want.

Customize your relationship

Whether you want to stick to standard dating conventions or shake things up, Winter encourages an "à la carte" relationship model.

"Take the pieces that you liked of the traditional, that feel right and good for you, keep the sweetness, [and] create a new model that's flexible and grows," she said. "It's your creation."

Forget the "rules" about when to call or text

Ditch those "rules" about how long to wait before calling or texting and don't overthink it. If you had a good time, let your date know in a way that feels unstilted.

"Whether it's the 'two-day rule' or the 'one-week rule', that formula is guaranteed to backfire," she said. "The unedited, natural approach is a far better choice."

Don't skimp on respect

It's called "The Golden Rule" for a reason. Being a decent human being never goes out of style.

"Today's dating protocol is far more relaxed than in former generations, but that doesn't mean it should be stripped of polite behavior, kindness, respect, and thoughtfulness," she said.

How Tesla emerged from the brink of bankruptcy to become America's coolest car company (TSLA)

Elon Musk/Tesla

Tesla Motors officially changed its name on Wednesday.

The company, known for its impressive electric cars, will now simply go by Tesla Inc.

While it may seem like a small change, the move marks a symbolic shift for the company. For the last few years, Tesla has been pushing beyond electric cars into new areas of business, specifically energy storage and generation.

But Tesla's journey to becoming this new company has not always been easy. While the company has celebrated plenty of achievements, it has also experienced its fair share of setbacks.

Here's a breakdown of the company's most defining moments since its founding.

SEE ALSO: 21 incredible facts about Elon Musk's Gigafactory

July 2003: Tesla Motors was founded by a group of Silicon Valley engineers.

While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has led Tesla for the majority of its existence, he wasn't always at the helm of the company.

Tesla, which is named after the famous physicist Nikola Tesla, was incorporated in 2003 by two engineers, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Other co-founders included JB Straubel, Ian Wright, and Elon Musk.

Musk led the company's Series A funding round in 2004, but at the time he served as the company's chairman.

Eberhard served as CEO until August 2007, at which time he was reportedly asked to leave the company.

On November 28, 2007 Ze'ev Drori, an Israeli engineer and businessman, was named CEO of the company.

August 2, 2006: Elon Musk reveals Tesla's Master Plan.

Musk has never been shy about his intentions for Tesla.

In 2006, Musk published a blog post entitled "The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (just between you and me)" in which he made it crystal clear that Tesla's mission is to speed up the adoption of a "solar electric economy."

"As you know, the initial product of Tesla Motors is a high-performance electric sports car called the Tesla Roadster," Musk said.

"However, some readers may not be aware of the fact that our long term plan is to build a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars. This is because the overarching purpose of Tesla Motors (and the reason I am funding the company) is to help expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy, which I believe to be the primary, but not exclusive, sustainable solution."

November 28, 2007: Ze'ev Drori named CEO.

Tesla announced Drori would take the helm at Tesla at the end of November. Drori officially took the reigns of the company on December 3, 2007.

Drori, an Israeli engineer and tech veteran, was tasked with bringing Tesla's first car, the Roadster to market by the first quarter of 2008.

LONDON — You might assume that a connection to the Royal Family would put you directly in the limelight, but in the case of James Matthews, this hasn't been the case.

Matthews is the brother of reality TV star Spencer Matthews, the CEO of hedge fund Eden Rock Capital Management, and, most recently, fiancée to Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge.

The couple will marry this year, but James Matthews remains a relatively unknown quantity.

A guide to Johnny Depp's 'extravagant and extreme' $2 million a month lifestyle

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp's former business managers have alleged that the actor is living an extravagant $2 million (£1.5 million) a month lifestyle, complete with 14 houses, 70 guitars, and an enormous appetite for wine.

It comes after Depp launched a $25 million lawsuit last month against his business managers, The Mandel Company (TMG), claiming "gross mismanagement" of his affairs.

He said the company failed to properly pay his taxes on his behalf, made unauthorised loans, and overpaid for "security and other services," costing him "tens of millions of dollars" and leading to financial trouble, of which he claims to have only become aware of in March of last year.

The cross-complaint, filed this week, stated that TMG "did everything within its power over the last 17 years to protect Depp from himself and to keep Depp financially solvent" but that TMG "did not have the power or ability to control Depp’s spending or his numerous other vices, or to force Depp to make wiser financial decisions."

The lawsuit lifts the lid, in extraordinary detail, on Depp's alleged "extravagant and extreme" $2 million a month spending habit. We took a look through to discover how the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star splurges his earnings. All of our figures are quoted in the TMG lawsuit, which is available in full here.

According to TMG, Depp has spent $75 million to 'acquire, improve, and furnish 14 residences' around the world.

This includes a 45-acre chateau in the south of France, valued at $13.5 million, a chain of islands in the Bahamas, a number of houses in Hollywood and penthouse lofts in downtown Los Angeles. He also has a horse farm in Kentucky. Each house has a full set of staff.

He has also spent 'millions' on 45 luxury cars.

The 25 best jobs in America right now

$

programmer work office laptop

Every January, Glassdoor publishes its list of the best jobs of the year. For the second year in a row, the top spot goes to data scientist.

"This report reinforces that the best jobs are highly-skilled and are staying ahead of the growing trend toward workplace automation," Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor's chief economist, tells Business Insider. He explains that the skills helping workers stay ahead of automation are creativity, judgment, and flexibility.

"Those are aspects of work that are extremely difficult to automate, and having them allows workers to team up with technology to become more productive, rather than simply being replaced by it," Chamberlain says.

"Many of the jobs on this list require proficiency in these 'soft' skills," he explains. "In tech, that includes data science and engineering, which requires the ability to creatively solve problems to deliver business value. In healthcare, that includes physical therapists and nurses, which require the ability to form personal relationships and to be flexible in delivering smart diagnoses and great care to patients."

Glassdoor's 50 Best Jobs in America report identifies careers with the highest overall "job score," which is determined by weighing three factors equally: earning potential (median annual base salary), job satisfaction rating, and number of job openings.

For a job title to be considered, it had to receive at least 100 salary reports and 100 job satisfaction ratings shared by US-based employees over the past year. The number of job openings per job title represents active job listings on Glassdoor as of January 1, 2017.

While Chamberlain says that this year's list of best jobs reinforces that tech and healthcare jobs may be great options for people to consider this year, many of the best jobs are also ones that can be found in almost every industry.

"For instance, jobs like accounting manager and communications manager are new to this year's list, but can be found in almost every industry, from tech to healthcare to retail to finance to entertainment," Chamberlain says. "The skills required for these jobs are needed in some capacity in almost every industry across the board, which is encouraging for people with those specific skills."

Below are the 25 best jobs in America right now. And head over to Glassdoor for the full list:

Here's how countries around the world are mocking Donald Trump

$

Donald Trump speakingPresident Trump's antagonizing of people around the world has sparked quite the backlash.

He's instituting barely coded religious tests, "yelling" at and hanging up on leaders of democratic countries, and still vowing to build that big, beautiful border wall. (Now partly transparent!)

Last week, the Netherlands tried to assuage fears of friction with an "official" welcome video, using President Trump's own words to promise he'll be embraced with open arms. As its new saying goes, "America First, the Netherlands Second."

Turns out that Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, and Germany — where citizens' trust in the US has eroded to a record low — all want to get in on the Trump trolling, too. Comedy shows in these countries have recently produced their own "second" videos, featuring Trump impersonations that sharply mimic his unique oratory eloquence.

Some, like Swiss TV show Deville Late Night's parody, compare their country directly to the Netherlands in Trumpian fashion: "Look at those mountains, those big flat mountains," the voice-over goes. "We're not flat like, for example, the Netherlands. They are so flat. Total disaster."

But perhaps best capturing the spirit was the German late-night show Neo Magazin Royale, honing in on Trump's apparent desire to provoke countries until we're on the brink of war. "Germany hosted two world wars in the last 100 years," the video explains. "They were the best world wars in the world, and we won both of them big league, anyone who says anything else is fake news — period."

In other words, yes, the world is pretty relentlessly mocking us right now.

Check out the videos below.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has a mesmerizing feature that transforms the car into a work of art

Rolls Royce Celestial edition Starlight

For more than a century, Rolls-Royce has been producing some of the most iconic and luxurious motor cars in the world. Over the past two years, I've had the opportunity to experience the Ghost, the Wraith, and the company's flagship Phantom firsthand.

And I've been duly impressed by all of three cars.

Last summer, Business Insider had the chance to spend a few days with a 2016 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Even though the Phantom was packed to the brim with luxury features ranging from book-matched wood veneer to power-closing coach doors, one feature stood out above them all: the Rolls-Royce starlight headliner.

I know it's hard to get excited about the ceiling of a car, but trust me. This is cool.

The headliner features a series of fiber-optic lights mounted inside the ceiling of the car. But the design of the lights make it look like constellations in the sky. Neither the Phantom nor the starlight headliner are new. In fact, the current generation Phantom is coming to the end of its service life and Rolls-Royce is working diligently on a replacement. Regardless, the headliner is still mesmerizing to look at.

Here's a closer look at the Rolls-Royce starlight headliner:

Incredible colorized photographs show the immigrants who passed through Ellis Island 100 years ago

In the early 1900s, Ellis Island served as the United States' largest immigration station, processing up to 12 million immigrants between the years 1892 and 1954.

One amateur photographer by the name of Augustus Sherman, who served as Ellis Island's chief registry clerk sometime between 1906 and 1917, photographed a handful of immigrants who passed through. According to the New York Public Library, his subjects were most likely asked to wear their best holiday finery or national dress.

These stunning portraits, originally published in National Geographic in 1907, have now been brought back to life and colorized by Jordan Lloyd of Dynamichrome. Lloyd's technique includes historical research for accuracy, as well as retouching at an expert level. His book, "The Paper Time Machine," includes these portraits.

RANKED: The 5 best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time

beyonce bruno mars singing music sing song super bowl perform

The Super Bowl is the most-watched television event in the US, which means whoever performs during the halftime show is playing the biggest stage in the country.

Which makes the stakes of that short burst of entertainment relatively colossal.

The modern Super Bowl halftime show as we know it started in 1991 with New Kids on the Block (previous shows featured a theme with marching bands and various performance groups), and it's stayed relatively consistent since: A pop star (or stars) takes over the field with props, backup dancers, probably pyrotechnics, and possibly even a live band, and goes through a rundown of their hits in a handful of minutes.

But the quality and tone of the shows have been all over the map, from the save-the-world vibe of early years with NKOTB and Michael Jackson, to Janet Jackson's Nipplegate and Katy Perry's campy Left Shark.

Not all of them proved to be timeless. We revisited all the halftime shows since 1991 and ranked the best:

Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy? Eclectic, sure, but that was the point. They’ve all had long, consistent careers because they’re consummate professionals, which is what defines this show. Wonder and Estefan give some of the best live singing the game has seen. And you could do worse for backup than Voodoo Daddy and jitterbug and salsa dancers sprinkled throughout the field. This is one joyous party.

Bruno Mars started out by impressively whaling on the drums, then broke into his hit "Locked Out of Heaven," and the rest was history. Mars threw the crowd a curveball when he rocked out with the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a collaboration featuring their song "Give It Away." Even non-fans had to love it. The combination of his Temptations-inspired attire and polarizing voice created a performance for the books.

This amazing film shows what Iraq was like in the 1950s, before decades of conflict

In April 2014, the 20th-century film house British Pathé digitized more than 80,000 of its films and put them on YouTube.

"Ageless Iraq" is one of them, shot in the 1950s to introduce "a new country" to the world, "one that hasn't forgotten the glories of its history."

Since this movie was made, Iraq has been the site of repeated conflict and atrocities — chemical warfare, sectarian violence, a US-led invasion, and now ISIS' blitz across the country. Many observers wonder whether Iraq will even be able to survive as a single, coherent political unit.

Despite the movie's aged Orientalist tone, it is still a jarring reminder that nothing in history is inevitable and that there was a time when even one of the world's most problematic countries seemed like it was on a promising trajectory.

You can watch the entire film here and here.

An earlier version of this article was written by Pierre Bienaimé and Armin Rosen.

Here are the fastest growing states in the US

grandparents with baby

America's population is growing and dynamic.

Families have births and deaths, Americans migrate from state to state, and hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the entire world move to the US every year.

The US Census Bureau keeps track of those changes. The Bureau recently released their annual estimates of population changes in each of the 50 states and Washington, DC between July 1, 2015 and July 1, 2016.

Using those estimates, we made a series of maps showing the major components of population change, as well as the overall change, across the country.

Natural population change is the difference between the number of births and the number of deaths in a state

Only two states — Maine and West Virginia — had more deaths than births between July 2015 and July 2016. Births exceeded deaths at a higher rate in western states than in eastern states.

Net domestic migration measures people moving from one state to another

The Northwest, Mountain West, and Southeast were the big winners, while states in the Northeast and Midwest saw more people move out than move in.

Net international migration measures immigration from other countries and emigration to other countries

While every state had more immigration from other countries than emigration out of the US, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New York, and Florida had the highest net migration rates.

Alternatively, Trump's supporters have threatened to stop giving their business to companies that bow to the pressure and drop Trump products.

Here's a list of the companies that have cut ties with the Trump family.

Uber

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick stepped down from President Trump's economic advisory board on Thursday.

Kalanick made the decision following calls for an international boycott against the ride-sharing company after it was accused of trying to profit off of protests amongst taxi drivers against Trump's immigration order.

In a memo to employees, Kalanick said he called the president to let him know he would be stepping down.

"Joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the President or his agenda but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that," Kalanick said.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom said Thursday that it decided to stop carrying Ivanka Trump's brand because of declining sales.

"Each year we cut about 10% [of brands carried] and refresh our assortment with about the same amount," a Nordstrom representative told Business Insider. "In this case, based on the brand's performance we've decided not to buy it for this season."

Nordstrom became one of the main targets of the anti-Trump boycotts after a shopper's open letter to the retailer went viral in October. The letter called Ivanka Trump's brand "toxic" and demanded that Nordstrom stop selling it.

Macy's

Macy's stopped selling President Trump's line of menswear — which includes suits, ties, and accessories — in 2015 after the president-elect referred to Mexican immigrants as "rapists."

After Trump won the presidency, Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said the company would continue to stand behind its decision.

"We made our decision about a year and a half ago, and stand by our decision," Lundgren told TheStreet's Brian Sozzi.

Macy's stopped selling Trump's brand in July 2015 after then-candidate Trump said people coming into the United States from Mexico "are bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Macy's released the following statement to explain its decision at the time: "We welcome all customers, and respect for the dignity of all people is a cornerstone of our culture. We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. ... In light of statements made by Donald Trump, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship."

However, Macy's still sells Ivanka Trump's brand of women's clothing and accessories.

Home prices are soaring — here's how much the average home costs in the 15 most popular big cities

zillow fastest growing city housing prices v2

US home prices rose past expectations at the end of 2016, according to S&P/Case-Shiller index data from November.

The 20 city-index, which covers major metropolitan areas like Seattle and Chicago, rose by 5.27%, above economists' expectations of 5.03%, and up from 5.1% in October.

Housing markets in big cities out West, including Portland, Seattle, and Denver, experienced significant bumps in growth, according to the report.

Gains are largely due to a healthy jobs market and historically low mortgage rates, which have increased demand for homeownership since the financial crisis, reports Business Insider's Elena Holodny.

"National home prices continue to grow at a rapid clip, largely driven upward by the now-familiar forces of high demand from home buyers and limited supply of homes available for sale," Svenja Gudll, Zillow chief economist said after the report.

"But even as the pace of home value growth keeps rising, growth in rents is flattening out and stabilizing, which – combined with a series of other factors – will likely begin impacting the for-sale market sooner or later."

New data provided to Business Insider by Zillow underscores Portland's national lead, reporting 13.8% home value growth for the metro over the last year. That's 2% higher than Tampa, purportedly the second most in-demand market.

Below, check out the top-15 most popular big cities — as measured by home value growth over the past year — and what a median-value home looks like in each.

RANKED: The 10 worst movies to win the best picture Oscar — and what should have won

Winning the best picture Oscar doesn't just signal that a movie is regarded by Hollywood as the top achievement in the medium for the year; it can help cement a movie's status, with past winners that have gone on to become classics like "The Godfather,""Lawrence of Arabia," and "On the Waterfront."

But the Academy voters don't always get it right. Tucked away in the 88 years of Oscar ceremonies are best picture winners that quickly vanished from the zeitgeist, never to be heard from again. That's often because they weren't as good as originally thought.

It's probably too early to say which of the nine best picture nominees in 2017 — including critical favorites "La La Land,""Moonlight," and "Manchester by the Sea"— will live on in our memories, but here's hoping the Academy doesn't screw this one up when the Oscars air February 26.

Here we look back on the 10 most disappointing best picture winners and choose the nominees that should have won:

10. "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956)

Based on the Jules Verne novel, this film used all of Hollywood's resources (a $6 million budget in the 1950s was far from cheap) to create a sprawling look at the world, but the story of a super-rich English gentleman Phileas Fogg (David Niven) who attempts to win his wager to navigate the globe is silly and far from memorable.

SHOULD HAVE WON: "The Ten Commandments"

Cecil B. DeMille's final directing effort still holds strong today. With its all-star cast, particularly the incredible performance by Charlton Heston as Moses (he didn't even get an Oscar nomination for the role), and its remarkable effects for that era, it's a movie that should have been recognized with the top prize.

9. "Ordinary People" (1980)

The late 1970s and early 1980s were when the melodrama was at its zenith in movie theaters, and "Ordinary People" came around at the perfect time. The film didn't just win best picture — it also achieved best director for Robert Redford and best actor for Timothy Hutton. Granted, the film has explosive performances in it, but there needs to be more than great acting to win best picture.
