6 unexpected ways to decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s

brain

As we age, our brains might start to get less sharp, making it harder to learn new things or remember key events.

And for some, that cognitive decline could be significant, in some rarer cases leading to Alzheimer's Disease.

When it comes to Alzheimer's, there are more drug failures than successes. On average about 99% of all drugs in clinical trials never actually make it to approval, and drugs are still failing late-stage trials in 2017.

But there are other ways to decrease your risk of getting the disease. We spoke with Neurotrack CEO Elli Kaplan, whose company recently launched an online assessment that helps people understand the state of their memory health, to learn about some of the ways you can potentially decrease your risk for Alzheimer's and cognitive decline more broadly. The company also provides a program that can be used to prevent some of that cognitive decline.

Here's what the science has to say about the best ways to lower your risk of Alzheimer's and cognitive decline.

SEE ALSO: There’s a simple way to understand how your diet might influence your risk of Alzheimer’s disease

DON'T MISS: Here's what everyone in the drug industry is talking about right now

Pay attention to the food you eat.

The right diet can contribute to lowering your risk of cognitive decline — in particular a diet called the MIND diet, short for "Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay"

It's a hybrid version of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, focusing on the aspects of those diets that have to do with the brain. Berries, olive oil, nuts, and dark, leafy greens are staples of the diet, which was designed based on large-scale studies of cognitive decline and ranked third on US News and World Report's annual best diet list.

A study of almost 1,000 seniors found that the diet appeared to lower the risk of Alzheimer's by 35% for those who followed it moderately and by 53% in people who followed it closely.

Plus, it fits in with what Dr. Maria Carrillo, chief scientific officer of the Alzheimer's Association told Business Insider in July: "Have fun, eat healthy meals that are good for you, and you may end up helping your brain as well as your heart."

Stay active.

Citing intervention-based trials and epidemiological studies, the National Institute on Aging found that exercise can also play a key role in reducing your risk for Alzheimer's and general cognitive decline. Neurotrack's program recommends strength training and cardiovascular exercises, said Kaplan.

Exercise can have additional health benefits as well, adding to the idea that what's good for your heart and body may also be good for your brain.

Decrease your stress levels where possible.

There is evidence to suggest a link between stress and an increased risk of Alzheimer's and cognitive decline.

A small 2009 study found that of the 41 participants with mild cognitive impairment, those who had higher stress ratings also had faster rates of cognitive decline.

The good news is that there are plenty of steps you can take to manage stress, such as breathing exercises, meditation and yoga.

dutch prison asylum

Tens of thousands of refugees from all over the Middle East — including countries like Syria, Iraq, Morocco, and Libya — have found an unlikely haven in the Netherlands.

Crime there has been declining for the last decade, and 19 of nearly 60 prisons have closed in the last three years. Others have taken in inmates from Belgium or Norway.

Now the Dutch government agency responsible for securing housing for asylum seekers has opened prisons in 12 locations around the country to refugees. As the AP reports, the spaces are currently serving hundreds of people in need.

At one such facility, De Koepel, the open space and array of amenities make the prison uniquely suited to serve as a temporary home. Here's what life is like on the inside.

SEE ALSO: Photos of maximum-security prisons in Norway and the US reveal the extremes of prison life

In 2015, the Netherlands saw approximately 60,000 migrants enter the country. While most were given traditional shelter, the Dutch government called on its prison system to offer its vacant facilities.

In Haarlem, De Koepel features layers of cells on the perimeters of a main courtyard. The cells are tight, but can accommodate families of three or four with bunk beds.

Female refugees are given the option to stay in the all-women section of the prison.

The most popular cities on Tinder during Valentine's Day

Smartphone texting

The INSIDER Summary:

• According to Tinder, usage increased by 10% on V-Day last year.
• Obvious cities like New York, Chicago and LA use Tinder the most, but  there are surprises, like Provo, Utah, using Tinder the most.

If you were looking to score a Valentine's Day date that night but still have no plans, don't be discouraged. Pull out your phone and start swiping. According to recent data released by Tinder, they saw a 10 percent increase in Tinder usage on Valentine's Day last year. So finding a Valentine's date at the very last-minute is very possible.

“As most might imagine, Tinder users do look for a date or match on Valentine's Day because there is a great deal of pressure around finding someone special on such a romantic day," Tinder Sociologist, Dr. Jess Carbino said in a release. "We have a shared understanding culturally that Valentine's Day is an annual occasion where people should express their love for each other. We see cards, chocolates, and other gifts exchanged between people who deeply care for each other. Most singles want to share and experience similar feelings during this time of the year. As a result, many people are motivated to find a match they can connect with just before, or on Valentine's Day.”

One important thing to keep in mind is where you're swiping. When it comes to looking for love, numerous studies have found that location matters. Some cities are just more singles-friendly than others. If you're anywhere near the following places, you might be in luck. According to Tinder, these were the top 10 cities with the most matches in February 2016:

10. Denver, Colorado

Rounding out the top 10 is Denver, Colorado.

Tinder found the average age that was most swiped on last year was 26, so these cities probably have a high population of Millennials. Considering that most of these tend to be cities people flock to after college, it's easy to see why they made the top 10.

9. Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is known for being one of those places that has beautiful weather year-round, so weather won't be an issue if you're looking for a more outdoorsy Valentine's Day date.

8. Portland, Oregon

Portland is eighth on this list. But interestingly enough, a recent WalletHub study also ranked it as the eighth best place to spend Valentine's Day in 2017.

Finding a great job that comes with a significant salary boost is one of the top reasons to move to a new city.

In its updated 2017 ranking of the best places to live in America, U.S. News & World Report gathered data on the 100 most populous US cities. Among the factors it considered were affordable housing, a low cost of living, good schools, quality healthcare, and access to well-paying jobs. You can read U.S. News' full methodology here.

Business Insider reranked these cities based on average annual salary to find the cities where residents earned more than $50,000 a year — on par with the national average. They don't all rank highly on U.S. News' overall list, given higher costs of living and other factors, so we've included each city's overall ranking for comparison's sake. For instance, Chicago ranks at No. 19 in terms of salary, but it came in only at No. 83 on the list of 100.

Of the 100 best places to live in the US, here are 22 where you can land the highest-paying jobs:

22. Santa Rosa, California

Population: 495,078

Average annual salary: $50,540

Overall rank on best places to live list: 52

Just 55 miles north of San Francisco sits Santa Rosa, one of Sonoma County's premier wine-country towns. According to US News' local expert, Santa Rosa is an originator of the farm-to-table movement and "a haven for bicyclists, who train on its rural western roads and visit en masse for two major cycling events: the Amgen Tour of California and the Levi's GranFondo."

The job market in Santa Rosa is powered by tourism: 9% of residents work in the industry, mainly at local farms, wineries, and brewpubs.

21. Albany, New York

Population: 877,846

Average annual salary: $50,880

Overall rank on best places to live list: 30

Despite the snowy winters, living in Albany comes with several advantages. Albany offers a cost of living lower than the national average and the cost of housing sits well below the rest of the US as a whole. In terms of jobs, the city's tech and healthcare industries are on the rise.

Albany's downtown is lined with art galleries, wine shops, and churches for visitors to peruse. In keeping with the city's cold climate, hockey is the sport of choice for residents.

20. Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

Population: 1,750,865

Average annual salary: $51,150

Overall rank on best places to live list: 7

Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill are collectively known as the Triangle, an area anchored by its foundation in research and tech. The Triangle employs nearly 40,000 residents at companies like IBM, SAS Institute Inc., and Cisco Systems as well as surrounding colleges Duke, North Carolina State, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A strong job market coupled with a burgeoning microbrewery and dining scene draws 80 new residents every day, said a local expert.

The most popular items at Trader Joe's

Between an incredibly tense presidential race and an inordinate number of celebrity deaths, 2016 was a stressful year, to say the least. If you needed cookie butter to get through it, I certainly can’t blame you.

Recently, Trader Joe’s revealed its most popular products of 2016. As part of Trader Joe’s 8th annual Customer Choice Awards, customers voted on their favorite items from the beloved grocery chain, and the list of winners may have you adding a few extra things to your shopping list.

Given the cult followings that a lot of Trader Joe’s products have, many of the items appearing on this year’s list are predictable, but there is at least one surprising change. For the past two years, Speculoos Cookie Butter has taken the top spot for “Favorite Overall” product. But in 2016, cookie butter toppled from its throne, to be replaced by a new ruler of the land: Mandarin Orange Chicken! Dun dun. (For some reason, I’m imagining the overthrow of the all-powerful cookie butter as an episode of Game of Thrones. “Cookie butter thought its rule was secure — but it never suspected the treachery of Triple Ginger Snaps and Joe's Diner Mac ‘n Cheese, as they plotted to put power in the hands of another…”) Er… where was I?

Cookie butter did make it onto the runner-up list for best overall product, but Mandarin Orange Chicken managed to make it to the top of two lists. These are people’s TJ’s faves for 2016:

Favorite Overall:

Mandarin Orange Chicken

Favorite Bakery:

Soft Pretzel Stick

Favorite Beverage:

I'm a 22-year-old New Yorker who makes $32,000 a year — here's what I spent in a week

girl_working

Welcome to Money Diaries, where we're tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We're asking millennial women how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we're tracking every last dollar. (Thanks, New York mag, for the inspiration.)

Today, a web editor in New York City, putting down a security deposit for a new apartment.

Industry: Digital Media/Editorial
Age: 22
Location: NYC
Salary: $32,000, plus freelance work
Paycheck Amount (2x a month): ~$1,200
Roommates: 1

Monthly Expenses:

Rent: $760
Loan Payments: They haven’t kicked in yet; I just graduated in May and don’t have to begin making payments for six months. My parents also offered to make my loan payments until I have a more permanent/higher-paying job.
Utilities: $25 for internet, around $40 for electricity
Transportation: Monthly Metrocard, $116
Phone Bill: Still on family plan, all paid for by my parents
Health Insurance: Still on parents’ insurance
Savings: I opened a Mutual Funds account several years ago and make deposits whenever I come into extra cash. (There’s around $8,000 in there currently.)

Day 1

9 a.m. — Grab a coffee at Starbucks to fuel up for a morning of apartment hunting. $3

1 p.m. —Weekly Whole Foods trip for groceries. Splurged on Halo Top ice cream. Also pick up zucchini, hummus, mozzarella, popcorn, granola, fruit, and some other things. $31

3 p.m. — Found a new apartment through Craigslist! Paid the security deposit. Will be moving to Park Slope with two roommates. $200

7 p.m. — Made caprese salad for dinner from my WF haul.

Daily Total: $234

Day 2

9 a.m. — Cereal for breakfast at home. I’m not a huge breakfast person, but my commute is pretty long right now, so if I don’t eat before work, I show up super hangry. Honey Nut Cheerios are the solution.

1 p.m. — Brought my own lunch to work, but some coworkers invited me to join them in the cafeteria, so I paid $5 for a sandwich. Seems worth it to socialize at my new job! $5

7 p.m. — Mac 'n' cheese for dinner. It’s Kraft-style, but since it’s from Whole Foods, it’s healthy, right?

Daily Total: $5

Day 3

10 a.m. — Have breakfast at the office since I slept through my alarm and didn’t eat at home. They have fruit, peanut butter, coffee, and some other snacks, so I don’t have to spend any money.

12 p.m. — Office coffee #2. The Starbucks around the corner is tempting, but I can’t justify spending money on lattes when they’re free at work.

2 p.m. — Brought my lunch to work; some frozen Trader Joe’s meal I found in the back of my freezer, supplemented with snacks from work.

7 p.m. — It’s unreasonably hot, so I pop into Starbucks mid-commute for an iced tea. $3

8 p.m. — Stop by Trader Joe’s to grab something for dinner. Craving Kung Pao cauliflower I got there last week. $5

Daily Total: $8

Howard Schultz is marking the relinquishment of his Starbucks CEO position in a major way.

He reportedly dropped a cool $40 million on a glassy duplex penthouse at The Greenwich Lane development, sources told The Real Deal.

The property was described as a "jewel box in the sky" by the listing, and it had originally listed for $45 million. The apartment went into contract in February 2015, but the sale just recently closed via an anonymous LLC.

Schultz is expected to step down from his leadership position on April 3, and he will focus on Starbucks' higher-end Reserve line and the company's social initiatives.

Eleven Dustin and Mike group hug Stranger Things

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for "Stranger Things" season two.

The newest issue of Entertainment Weekly features all things "Stranger Things." In an exclusive look at the upcoming second season, EW's Tim Stack reveals more about the storyline, characters, and new horrors facing the residents of Hawkins, Indiana.

Check out EW's cover story online, and keep reading for a look at the seven biggest things we learned.

Eleven is returning and we'll get more of her backstory.

Based on the full teaser trailer released as well as comments from the "Stranger Things" cocreators Matt and Ross Duffer, it looks like Eleven definitely survived her showdown with the Demagorgon. Season two will reveal what happened to her, as well as more details about her history and Hawkins Lab.

Mike and Nancy will be "screwed up" and still grieving the deaths of their friends.

While Nancy's grief over losing Barb makes sense, Mike's sadness is doubly heartbreaking because apparently he doesn't know that Eleven isn't really dead.

"[Nancy] and Mike are both the most screwed-up because they're the ones who both lost someone," Ross Duffer told EW. "They're both grappling with that, and we see the effects."

The season will feature two new characters: Max and Billy.

Billy is apparently less friendly than his sister, Max, who "becomes pals" with the boys and attracts romantic attention from Lucas and Dustin, according to EW.

The incredible life and career of Warren Buffett, the billionaire every investor looks to for inspiration

Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett isn't your typical billionaire.

And with a net worth of $70 billion, he lives a modest lifestyle.

Buffett still lives in the house he bought in 1957 for $31,000, forgoes private jets for public transportation, and plays bridge instead of throwing parties.

And it is that juxtaposition of vast wealth and a desire to live simply that has captured the awe of people around the world.

His lifestyle was recently captured in the HBO's documentary "Becoming Warren Buffett."

Following are interesting things we've gleaned from the billionaire's eventful, 86-year-long life.

The "Oracle of Omaha" was born in 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Howard and Leila Buffett. His father was four-term US congressman from Nebraska and a stockbroker.

Source: Investopedia

While most kids were playing stickball out in the street, Buffett was rubbing elbows with Wall Street's most powerful players.

At age 10, Buffett had his "road to Damascus" moment, on Wall Street.

During a visit to New York City, Buffett and his father joined At Mol, a Dutchman who was a member of the New York Stock Exchange, for lunch.

"After lunch, a guy came along with a tray that had all these different kinds of tobacco leaves on it," Buffett recalled. "He made a cigar for Mr. Mol, who picked out the leaves he wanted. And I thought, this is it. It can't get any better than this. A custom-made cigar."

It was at that moment Buffett realized he would dedicate his life to making money.

Source: Business Insider

Buffett caught the investing bug early. When he was 11 years old he purchased his first stock.

He bought three shares of Cities Services Preferred at $38 per share. The young Buffett held on to them despite a quick price drop, to $27 per share, but sold them as soon as they reached $40.

Buffett's small profit could have been tremendous if he had waited it out a little longer, as the price of Cities Services Preferred's stock ultimately soared to nearly $200 per share.

The experience imparted an important financial lesson, which has informed his investment decisions to this day: Buy and hold.

How to know if you're dating a narcissist

$
0
0

narcissism

Someone who is grandiose, has a lack of empathy for other people, and has a desperate need for admiration and attention is often described as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD.)

In Greek Mythology, Narcissus was known for his own beauty and was in love with himself. In reality, narcissism is when someone is obsessed with an idealised version of themselves, which they project to avoid facing their real, damaged self.

Dating someone new can be hard enough, but it can be especially challenging if you start seeing someone who believes they are superior or special to everyone else — because that probably includes you. This can bring a lot of different issues to the relationship that can be damaging if you don't know how to handle them.

We've looked into the research and found the traits you are likely to encounter if you meet a narcissist, or the warning signs if you're already dating one.

You may feel like you're constantly being used.

Psychologist Dr Neil J Lavender wrote in a blog post for Psychology Today that narcissists are notorious for having a sense of entitlement, and so will have no problem with using you for whatever needs they want fulfilling. This could mean borrowing your things and not returning them, including your ideas, and using your own worth to make themselves look better.

They are attracted to impressive people, because that helps with their own self image.

Some research has suggested that narcissists are especially hostile during conflicts with their romantic partners, such as one study which followed 146 newlywed couples and assessed them six times over the first four years of marriage. This is because having a grandiose personality means they think they are the hero of the situation every time, which makes it hard for them to consider that they may be wrong. Another study looked at 190 couples at college, and showed that aggression between them was higher when a partner engaged in what they called "grandiose exhibitionism," or showing off.

Narcissists tend to suck you in and then abandon you.

Expect to be used by a narcissist and then dropped quickly and brutally. According to Lavender, they can make you feel like the greatest thing in the world when you first meet, but this will quickly turn into contempt when you inevitably disappoint them. This can lead to them completely devaluing you and your life, ending with them cutting you out of their lives completely.

30 incredible perks companies like IKEA, Facebook, and Goldman Sachs offer their employees

IKEA employees happy clapping

Most of us spend a majority of our waking hours at work, so it's only natural that we want to enjoy our time in the office as much as we can. And perks help — a lot.

According to career site Glassdoor, more than half (57%) of all workers say perks and benefits are among the top things they consider when deciding whether to accept a job, and almost 80% of employees say they would prefer new benefits over a pay raise.

That's why some employers are raising the bar and going beyond standard vacation days and health insurance benefits to attract new talent.

Companies like Airbnb and Salesforce are offering unique and surprising perks like travel stipends and paid time off to volunteer, while companies like IKEA and Pinterest are stepping up their game for helping new parents.

It's 2017, here's why your cell service still stinks

If you're living in the US, there's a good chance you're using a phone on one of the four major carriers: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. But in my conversations with friends, family and colleagues, I feel like I rarely hear anyone claim they're actually happy with their cell service. If you're reading this story, it's possible you're also dissatisfied.

iphone signal barsTo boot, US carriers don't rank too well against other carriers abroad. According to the MobiNEX research report conducted by Aptelligent published in October of last year, the US landed in 10th place out of 25 for overall carrier performance, including reliability and speeds. Ahead of the US, in order: Japan, France, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia.

As someone who regularly commutes between downtown New York City and the suburbs of Connecticut, I've personally experienced plenty of frustration with my carrier's performance, especially during the peak commuter hours. I get a decent three to four bars of signal strength of LTE, but music streaming cuts out intermittently, web pages take a very long time to load, and I can totally forget about streaming video.

It's not like I live out in the boonies. My commuter route is one of the busiest in the country, so I'd expect my carrier would make sure daily commuters get the access they want — and pay for.

Why does cell service stink?

Joe Madden, the principal analyst at mobile consulting firm Mobile Experts, told me that carriers have "not built enough extra capacity into the network to deal with the kind of web traffic we have going on now."

It means that, if you're experiencing poor speeds and reliability, your carrier network can barely handle the sheer number of people using data-heavy apps, at least in the area you're in.

It's similar to your WiFi at home, where internet speeds drop as more and more people stream Netflix simultaneously over your WiFi network.

Congestion also helps explain why I get such poor performance during my train commute, where I can barely stream music even with good signal strength. Madden explained that the local cell towers in the towns along my route might not have much capacity left during peak hours for the 300,000 daily commuters to New York City. The majority of the local cell tower capacity is probably being used up by local users in those towns, especially during peak hours.

Indeed, congestion wasn't a problem back in 2011, when LTE first rolled out and there were relatively few people on the network. It was so fast and reliable that I could easily use my phone as a hotspot at home instead of using WiFi for streaming music, videos, and browsing the web and social media.

Back then, I could get 20+ megabits-per-second (Mbps) LTE speeds through my phone's hotspot. These days, I'm lucky to get 4 Mbps.

The speed hasn't changed, but more phones can now use the LTE network, which means there's more congestion.

You don't have to settle on power when it comes to buying an electric motorcycle.

For those looking to go the environmentally-friendly route, there are several electric motorcycle options that don't compromise on speed or performance.

Scroll down for the 9 best electric motorcycle options out there:

Alta Motorcycles has two solid options for those just entering the market. The Redshift SM, pictured here, has an output of 40 hp and 120 ft.-lb. of torque.

Priced at $15,495, the Redshift SM has a top speed of 80 mph and charges in six hours from a level 2 charger. The SM is a bit limited when it comes to range at just 50 miles, but it's packed with enough power for those looking for a city bike.

For anyone looking to go electric for an off-road experience, Alta also offers its Redshift MX, pictured here. Like the SM, it also has an output of 40 hp and 120 ft.-lb. of torque.

The MX is a bit cheaper at $14,995, but you'll be compromising more with a top speed of 65 mph. Alta says the MX has a range anywhere between 1-4 hours, depending on factors like environment and speed.

Both the SM and MX can be reserved online with a $100 deposit. Deliveries for the SM are scheduled to begin in February. The MX will be delivered between now and February 1, depending on when you place your order.

Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, two of the original co-founders of Tesla, invested in Alta Motorcycles.

If you're looking for an option with some extra juice, Victory Motorcycles' Empulse TT has an output of 54 hp and 61 ft-lb of torque.

The Empulse TT can reach 110 mph easily, a spokesperson for Victory Motorcycles told Business Insider. It has a range of 100 miles, so you can have it out for longer than the Redshift SM.

The $19,999 motorcycle can fully charge in roughly four hours on a level 2 charger and can be bought at a local Victory Motorcycles dealer.

Donald Trump

Though Twitter is clearly Donald Trump's preferred social media platform, Instagram comes in a close second.

The president — who goes by @realdonaldtrump on Instagram — has been on the photo-sharing site since April 2013, posting photos of his family, himself posing with celebrities, and his various hotels and golf courses around the globe. While his Instagram following pales in comparison to his 24.3 million Twitter followers, he retains a respectable 5.6 million followers on Instagram.

But who does he follow back? Only 15 accounts, it turns out. Much like the accounts he follows on Twitter, Trump follows a handful of his own properties, his family, and a few advisers.

Here are all the people and places Trump follows on Instagram.
