Why this new racially charged horror movie has a rare perfect score from critics

get out universal

It’s very rare, even close to unseen, for a wide-release movie to get a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes just a day before its release. A score of 100% means that every critic who has seen the movie so far gave it a positive review.

Even some of the movies you’d expect to have a perfect score don’t have one. This honor is primarily reserved for classic films including “Citizen Kane,”“All About Eve,"“Singing “in the Rain,” and “North by Northwest.”

But before its opening weekend, Jordan Peele’s comedy-horror mashup film “Get Out” has managed to move up the ranks and earn this high honor, with 78 100% positive reviews counting as of this writing.

"Get Out" addresses issues of race in the United States in ways that are uncomfortable, gruesome, and at times also uncomfortably funny. It's especially timely given the current political climate. The sketches on Peele's Comedy Central sketch show "Key & Peele," which ended in 2015, often addressed racial issues and blended comedy with the horror genre but never to an extent as serious as his directorial debut, which according to what critics are saying so far, is working out beautifully.

(Warning: Mild spoilers for "Get Out" below.)

See what the critics say about the 100% fresh "Get Out":

SEE ALSO: Jordan Peele explains why his horror movie about racism is what we need in the Trump era

It proves a point about race. Powerfully.

As a black man, the protagonist of "Get Out" is nervous about meeting his white girlfriend's family. His anxiety turns into straight-up terror as he discovers a conspiracy that has to do with black people disappearing.

“[Peele] has created a work that addresses the myriad levels of racism, pays homage to some great horror films, carves out its own creative path, has a distinctive visual style — and is flat-out funny as well,” Richard Roeper wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times.

But it’s still it’s a crowd-pleaser.

Despite its social commentary, "Get Out" still provokes what movie audiences crave, including jump scares and nervous laughter. This isn’t one of those movies you want to see in an empty theater once it's been out for a couple of weeks. With an empty theater, it just won’t be as fun and exciting. The movie incites audience reaction that adds to the whole experience.

“This one really should be seen with a crowd,” Michael Phillips wrote in the Chicago Tribune.

It’s hilarious. (Really.)

Despite the daring premise and elements of horror, Peele doesn't let his comedic genius so beloved from "Key & Peele" go unnoticed.

"'Get Out' is an absolutely brilliant and original horror film. Imagine a devilishly twisted update of 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.' 'Get Out' is scary, laugh-out-loud funny, and an inspired satire of interracial relationships,"MovieWeb wrote.

Here are the 24 CEOs who met with Trump to discuss American manufacturing on Thursday

donald trump ceo meeting manufacturing

President Donald Trump held the largest yet of his meetings with high-powered executives on Thursday, assembling 24 CEOs in the White House's State Dining Room to discuss American manufacturing.

Joined by members of his cabinet and several of his top aides, Trump told the executives that he would bring "many millions" of jobs back to the United States and said that he would be addressing the $60 billion trade deficit with Mexico. He said that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is on a "tough trip" in Mexico.

After the group discussion, attendees split into four breakout sessions run by administration officials: tax and trade, regulatory reform, infrastructure, and the workforce of the future.

"The U.S. economy lost 6 million manufacturing jobs from 2000 to 2010, roughly one-third of its total, in part due to offshoring, but the sector has added 900,000 jobs since then,"Reuters reported, citing the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Trump has held several meetings with corporate executives in his first weeks as president, and Thursday's included recurring guests like Ford CEO Mark Fields, Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson, and Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris. The manufacturing council was announced late last month, and was assembled with the help of Liveris.

Here's who had a seat at the table this time.

SEE ALSO: Here are the 17 executives who met with Trump for his first business advisory council

Jeff Immelt — Chairman and CEO of General Electric

In the second half of President Barack Obama's administration, the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party in Congress pushed hard against the Export-Import Bank, which provides loans for subsidizing manufacturing exports.

GE was unhappy with this development, moving 350 jobs in Wisconsin, 225 in Texas, and 180 in Ohio to Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Hungary.

At the start of the meeting Thursday, Trump had Immelt tell the story of how Trump hit a hole in one when they golfed together, and that the president was "the best golfer of all the rich people."

Kenneth Frazier — Chairman and CEO of Merck

Frazier told CNBC in December that he was open to seeing the Trump administration overhaul the Affordable Care Act, and that they needed to prioritize health care spending.

He warned, however, against Trump's flirting with the idea of the reimportation of drugs, which had a degree of bipartisan support in 2008 but then fizzled out.

Michael Dell — Founder, chairman, and CEO of Dell Technologies

Dell was also a member of Trump's first business meeting as president.

"What we see is a new administration that's talking about growth,"Dell told Bloomberg at this year's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "I think you'll see our company, companies like ours, across all industries, bring capital back onto the balance sheet of the United States, which is likely to be a good thing, and so we're very supportive of that."

Hollywood's biggest night is quickly approaching, and movie lovers everywhere are debating which films from 2016 will take home trophies.

Before finding out which dreams will come true and who might be overlooked, let's take a look back at some of the biggest surprise Oscar snubs of years past.

SEE ALSO: All the most shocking things about Scientology, according to Leah Remini's revealing show

1. Bette Davis, "Of Human Bondage"

The 1934 film adaptation of  W. Somerset Maugham's novel starred Bette Davis as tea-room waitress Mildred Rogers, who draws Philip Carey into an obsessive and abusive relationship. Davis originally did not receive a nomination for her performance, and the public was so upset by the oversight that a special write-in campaign was permitted to recognize her.

2. Judy Garland, "The Wizard of Oz"

Judy Garland won hearts all over the world with her performance in the MGM musical as Dorothy Gale, the plucky girl from Kansas who ends up over the rainbow and determined to return home. The New York Times described her as "a pert and fresh-faced miss with the wonder-lit eyes of a believer in fairy tales," yet Garland did not receive an Academy Award nomination for her timeless performance.

3. Peter O'Toole, "Lawrence of Arabia"

Peter O'Toole was heralded for his performance in this 1962 blockbuster film, which won seven Academy Awards. Its accolades included best picture, but failed to recognize O'Toole's performance chronicling his experiences in the Arabian Peninsula during World War I.

O'Toole went on to earn seven more nominations throughout his career — but he never took home an Oscar.

For years, celebrities have hit red carpets with their wildest outfits and fiercest faces. They became the inspiration for both professional and amateur makeup artists, and many started their own beauty lines or collaborated with big names like Maybelline and Revlon.

More recently, however, they have started to ditch their foundation and powder for fresher faces.

Whether it's at awards shows or using hashtags like #nomakeup, celebrities are showing the world that they aren't that perfect. They're just really, really close to it.

The 17 shortest celebrity marriages of all time

kim kardashian kris humphries

Unlike us "normal folk" who get divorced or have their marriages annulled, famous people don’t get the luxury of privacy during those trying times.

That means that the entire world knows when, why, and how they decide to call it quits. Even more so when that life-long commitment doesn't even last a year.

Here are the shortest celebrity marriages of all time:

SEE ALSO: Why this new racially charged horror movie has a rare perfect score from critics

17. Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd: 218 days

Lopez met Judd back in 2001 when he worked as a back-up dancer in her "Love Don't Cost a Thing" video. They got engaged and married within the year, but the marriage came crashing down 218 days later.

Judd doesn't blame the limelight for their failed marriage, but it certainly wasn't his favorite part of their time together.

"You know it's very tough," Judd said while reminiscing on their relationship with Us Weekly in 2014. "Your privacy is breached. You're no longer a normal person. [Our wedding] was a circus. I think several people got arrested trying to climb up a mountain … trying to sneak in. We actually rented the airspace."

16. Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad "Nicky" Hilton: 205 days

She was 18 at the time she said "I do" to the hotel heir. Her first marriage (out of eight) ended before she even turned 19.

In her 1965 memoir, Taylor said the marriage was practically over by the time they returned from their two-week honeymoon. By the time the divorce was final, they'd been together 205 days.

"The honeymoon in Europe lasted two weeks," she wrote. "I should say the marriage lasted for two weeks. Then came, yours sincerely, disillusionment rude and brutal."

15. Drew Barrymore and Tom Green: 163 days

The MTV host and famous actress eloped in 2001. Green filed for divorce 5 months later. In 2014, he revealed to Oprah that they're no longer in communication.

"I haven’t talked to her in many, many years," he said. "I’m glad she’s doing great. I’m really happy that she’s doing good."

The 10 best cities to buy a rental property if you want to make extra money on the side

dallas texas

Starting a side hustle is a great way to generate passive income and boost your earning potential.

One lucrative way to earn money on the side is through a rental property — or two, or ten. But your potential for profit depends greatly on where you choose to buy property.

Real estate management firm HomeUnion ranked the best real estate investment opportunities for 2017 in its recently released National Single-Family Rental Research Report, which considered rental housing supply and demand, levels of new construction, and entry prices in 31 major metro areas across the US.

For the ranking, HomeUnion looked specifically at single-family residences, and measured each metro area's cap rates, entry prices, and projected job growth, penalizing markets with high rates of new construction due to the elevated risk of competition. Read more about the methodology here.

Overall, it's a good time to get into the rental property market.

"Strong job growth will encourage new household formation, particularly among millennials that have been living with their parents," Steve Hovland, director of research for HomeUnion and the lead author of the 2017 NSFR, explained. "As most of these new households are unlikely to enter the ownership pool, this will create demand for rental properties."

If you're considering investing in a rental property, read on for the best places to buy.

Ford Super Duty

Last year, Ford completely redesigned its exceptionally popular Super Duty pickup for the first time in two decades. I wrote about how that was a big risk for the automaker, but then it occurred to me that although I was familiar with the legendary F-150 pickup, I had never spent any time with a Super Duty.

Ford was then kind enough to let me borrow a 2017 F-250 Super Duty 4x4 Crew Cab Platinum, with a mighty 6.7-liter diesel V8 engine. And a gigantic bed just crying out to be filled.

This was easily the largest vehicle we've ever tested at Business Insider, outdoing even the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

As it turned out, it was a real challenge to find anything to put in the bed. Most of what I had around my house just didn't seem to cut it:

It wasn't too tough to fill up the bed of the F-150 when I tried it out.

But the F-250 Super Duty is just ... so ... large. This was going to be tough. So I tried a few things.

Conveniently, Ford has installed the same retractable step on the Super Duty as on the F-150. Here's what I put in the back of this beast.

The 8 most highly regarded airlines in the world

Air France

While pricing and safety are two important measures to consider when choosing an airline, there are far more factors that contribute to a customer — or an employee's — opinion of a company.

Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies survey for 2017 looked at 1,500 of the most highly regarded and respected businesses in the world within a range of industries, asking executives, directors, and analysts to rate each company based on nine criteria.

The criteria included investment value, quality of management and products, social responsibility, and the ability to attract talent.

These are the most admired and respected airlines in the world, according to Fortune's survey.

Note: To produce the ranking, Fortune looked at 1,000 of the largest US companies based on revenue as well as the non-US companies in their Fortune Global 500 database with revenues of $10 billion (£8 billion) or more.

8. ANA Holdings

The Tokyo-based ANA Holdings controls airlines including ANA (All Nippon Airways), Air Japan, and Vanilla Air.

ANA is Japan's largest carrier, with more than 250 aircrafts flying more than 50 million passengers a year. It is one of just nine airlines to hold Skytrax's highly coveted five-star designation.

7. Southwest Airlines

The American Southwest Airlines came in seventh place in the world for its reputation. It operates a single type of aircraft — a Boeing 737 — and uses a low-cost business model, with no baggage fees.

Earlier this month, Warren Buffet invested $2.4 (£1.9) billion in the company.

6. United Continental Holdings

United Airlines is one of the most well-known airlines not only in the US, but across the globe, giving it sixth spot. CEO Oscar Munoz has been part of a battle to turn the airline's image around since he took charge, stating earlier this year that the company needed to regain the trust of its employees.

Fashion designer and mogul Tommy Hilfiger is looking to offload his uniquely designed Miami mansion.

He recently listed the property for $27.5 million, a property which includes yellow polka-dot and scratch and sniff wallpaper that Hilfiger installed.

“We wanted it to be really unusual,” Hilfiger told the Wall Street Journal“We did sort of a 60s-70s theme, with really a white canvas with splashes of color.”

If the property gets its asking price, it will become the most expensive property to sell in the Miami-area town of Golden Beach. Hilfiger is also selling his eclectic Manhattan penthouse, which has been on the market since 2013.

Hilfiger is selling the Florida house because he doesn't spend enough time there, he told the Journal.

The mansion measures 14,000 square feet.

Inside, the home has colorful touches which are meant to make the home “part art gallery and part beach house."

These are the 18 most reliable used cars of 2017

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Conv 2014

When it comes to buying a used car, reliability is paramount. Fortunately for car buyers, J.D. Power released its 28th annual Vehicle Dependability Study this week. The study examines the reliability of 2014 model-year cars over the past 12 months — giving car buyers a glimpse at the type of problems these three-year-old cars are likely to experience.

"We find buyers are increasingly avoiding models with poor reputations for dependability, so manufacturers can’t afford to let quality slip, particularly on their best sellers," J.D. Power vice president, global automotive, Dave Sargent, said in a statement. "The good news is that consumers don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a very dependable vehicle."

Overall reliability is judged based on the number problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) with a lower score reflecting fewer problems.

As part of the study, J.D. Power found the most reliable model in 18 major automotive segments. This year, the big winner is Toyota — taking home the top spot in 10 categories. General Motors followed in second with four segments wins.

I spent 48 hours with Nintendo's new game console, the Switch — here's what it's like

$

Getting excited for Nintendo's new game console? Maybe you haven't heard about it? It's called the Nintendo Switch, and it arrives in just one week.

The Switch is a home console and a portable console all at once, like so:

Nintendo Switch

Here's the quick and dirty:

  • It's called Nintendo Switch.
  • It's scheduled to launch on March 3.
  • It starts at $299.
  • Nintendo has a gaggle of games starring its most prominent creations in the works.

Even though the console doesn't arrive in stores for another week, Nintendo sent one over earlier this week. I've been using the Switch for 48 hours now — both as a home console and a portable — and I've got a heap of stuff to tell you. Let's dig in.

SEE ALSO: Thinking about buying Nintendo's new console? Consider waiting.

DON'T MISS: Here's everything we know about Nintendo's new $300 console, the Switch

Thankfully, setup is quick and easy.

You don't even need to plug the Switch into the wall to set it up — you just need the console itself (the tablet) and a few minutes.

After switching on the console, it quickly boots to a simple setup that asks for stuff like your time zone, WiFi, and Nintendo Account name. Most of this stuff can be skipped, even, if you wanna jump right into a game.

You could do this from the home console version of the Switch, or you could do it in the portable version. It's clear that, right out of the box, the Switch is intended to be used both ways interchangeably.

If you decide to set up the Nintendo Switch Dock, it's got a great way of hiding cables.

After setting up the console while in portable mode, I moved on to the Dock. Setting it up was as easy as setting up an Apple TV — one power cable (to the wall), and one HDMI cable (to the TV).

Best of all, the power cables are hidden away behind a plastic panel. If you place it carefully, you can set up the Switch Dock in such a way that it hides your cables from public view altogether — the wireless future we've been waiting for, sorta!

The Dock also enables wired internet connections, if you're into that kinda thing.

The Dock has three USB ports on it, all of which can be used for charging various controllers. You can also plug an ethernet-to-USB adapter in, if you'd like to run wired internet to your Switch Dock (if your home has spotty WiFi coverage, a wired connection can be more reliable).

If that's your kinda thing, one of those three USB ports is in between the HDMI and power ports — which is to say, "You can easily hide the ethernet cable if you're trying to maintain the cable-free look." A nice touch, no doubt.

A puff of this, and the world transforms into a colorful kaleidoscope of dancing patterns and waves of sound; a sip of that, and the muscles in your body relax like jello.

We know different drugs make us experience the world around us in very different ways — and their after-effects are often nowhere near as pleasant as the immediate results they produce.

So what exactly are these drugs doing to prompt these feelings?

WALL STREET SPEAKS: The case for and against investing in Snap's massive IPO

Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy

Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. is set to price its initial public offering, or IPO, on Wednesday, allowing investors to decide just how much the social media company is ultimately worth.

The company is seeking to raise as much as $3.2 billion and pricing shares at $14 to $16. That would value it between $19.5 billion and $22 billion. The deal is already oversubscribed, according to Reuters

Tuesday's roadshow in New York drew a standing-room-only crowd of nearly 500 people that one attendee said included "the entire hedge fund mafia."

They raised questions about Snap's advertising revenue, slowing user growth, and competition with Facebook, among other things. Now the question is whether or not they and others will buy in.

We spoke to a handful of prospective investors and others close to the deal about the pros and cons. In most cases, these people declined to be identified because they were not permitted to speak to the press.

Below are the bull and bear cases for buying a piece of Snapchat.

BULL: Snapchat's potential $22 billion valuation

Snap's proposed valuation has raised some eyebrows on Wall Street, as people close to the company had for months floated the idea that it would be valued at up to $25 billion.

One person close to the deal, with a vested interested in seeing it succeed, told Business Insider that Snap is playing it safe with the intention of going higher as soon as demand merits. Conversely, asking for the full $25 billion and being forced to roll it back if investor demand isn't high enough would be a worse outcome that taints the company's trading debut.

Though the company said it was seeking to price shares at $14 to $16, this person said the only acceptable price, in reality, will be $16 per share or more. This person expects Snap's order book to be oversubscribed, meaning there will be demand for more shares than it is selling.

A hedge fund manager who attended the New York meeting told Business Insider "the bankers are being smart about the pricing."

"You could make the point it's too low, but the bankers are being smart enough about not having another Facebook," he said, referring to the famous plunge that Facebook's stock took in the months after its IPO before shares eventually recovered. "I think they’re pricing it at a very reasonable amount. Even if you’re skeptic, the valuation is coming out at a level where you almost have to look at it."

He added:

"If you're bullish, what you want to spin is at the end of day is that Facebook's market cap is $385 billion. Snapchat is coming about $20 billion enterprise value. When you think of enterprise value to opportunity set, it's a fairly palatable valuation ... A similar way to look at it as to look at Twitter as a comparison, with a $12 billion market cap. They have a user base problem, monetization problem and they’re still worth $12 billion. The premium that Snapchat is coming out as versus Twitter isn't that bad, for what I’d argue is a much better program."

BEAR: Snapchat's potential $22 billion valuation

Still, not everyone is sold on Snap's valuation. GP Bullhound's Manish Madhvani Snap told Business Insider Snap represents a "very risky" investment

Addressing Snap's valuation, Madhvani told Business Insider: "Is it worth that? I think you can see a clear path to where they're going to get to monetization of 1.5, 2 billion quite easily from what they are at the moment. But can they go massively beyond that? That's the bet you're really taking."

Snap had revenue of $404 million last year, and Goldman Sachs is forecasting that the company will hit $2 billion in revenue by 2018. Snap's net losses however deepened to $515 million in 2016, versus $373 million the year before.

Silicon Valley VC firm Goodwater Capital, which does not have a stake in Snap, estimates the red ink won't stop flowing until 2020.

Atlantic Equities research analyst James Cordwell wrote in a recent note that while the Snapchat app was an "impressive 'made for mobile' service" that was popular among young users, it would be difficult to expand its audience base beyond this demographic.

"With expansion beyond the core audience likely challenging, sustainability of engagement concerns to persist, and margins structurally lower than peers, we do not see upside to the $14-$16 IPO valuation range."

Another investor, who specializes in tech, put it this way: "I'm bullish in in the sense that I think Snap can be a multibillion company that generates lots of profits and revenue... But the question for me is if you're trying to go public at $22 billion and you have no profits today, if you're an investor, you really need to be compensated for that risk. You need it to be a $50 or $70 billion company for it to be worth it. I'm bearish on their prospects of getting to that level."

BULL: Snap's slowdown in user growth

In the fourth quarter of 2016, Snap says it had 158 million daily users, an increase 48% from a year earlier. That's the slowest growth rate for any of the 12 quarters for which it reported numbers.

It's hard to make a bull case for a statistic like declining growth, but one person close to the deal laid out a counter-argument to those concerns. Essentially, this person said, Snap emphasizes quality of engagement over quantity of users. Spiegel wants existing users to really enjoy the product and is focused on innovating to make it more usable.

Part of that means users must have higher-end smart phones. Snapchat works best on iPhones, and while some problems persist on Android and other phones, Spiegel says he will not dilute the product to make it work on every phone. At the roadshow, Snap attributed the slowdown in growth to persistent problems with accessing the app on Android.

So unlike Facebook, which has nearly 2 billion users around the world, Snap is not focused on non-iPhone-using customers in places like the developing world because those markets are not easily monetized. The logic is that advertisers want to reach North America and develop Europe rather than the rest of world.

Goldman estimates that the company could grow its daily average users to 221 million in 2018, up from 158 million late last year, Business Insider previously reported
