Bill Gates' wicked sense of humor really shines on Reddit — see for yourself

bill gates reddit AMA 2017

Every year since 2013, Microsoft cofounder and world's richest man Bill Gates has held a Reddit AMA (Ask me Anything) session, where anybody on the planet can ask him a question directly.

His sessions garner hundreds of questions across thousands of comments, too many for even him to answer. Gates' answers are sometimes educational, often insightful, and always interesting

There's another constant, too: Every year, Bill Gates posts a new picture of himself to the thread to prove that it's really, actually him taking questions. And the man goes all out, showing the world his very particular sense of humor.

For instance, on Monday, his fifth annual Reddit AMA, Gates marked the occasion with a riff on Tom Hanks' memeworthy "Saturday Night Live" character David S. Pumpkins

From 2013 to today, here's how Bill Gates slayed them in the aisles on Reddit. Just don't forget to tip your waitress.

In 2013, Bill Gates held his first Reddit AMA. For his first time out, it was a pretty stripped-down affair, showing off a drawing of himself in the style of "Snoo," Reddit's mascot.

Things picked up a little bit in 2014, when he one-upped himself by meeting Snoo in person.

That AMA was also way more popular, prompting Gates to post a meme of himself as Austin Powers, which there's an explanation for, I swear.

Once upon a time, Bill Gates and then-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer performed as Austin Powers and Dr. Evil, respectively, in a video for Microsoft employees. It's good to know that Gates can laugh at himself.

Elio's tiny car gets 84 mpg and costs only $7,300 — here's what it was like

Elio Car 3

Elio Motors has one of the more interesting, and simple, ideas in the auto industry.

The Arizona-headquartered transport startup, with a factory in Louisiana, just started taking deposits on its first vehicle, a three-wheeler that's street-legal, made in the US, and will sell for just over $7,000. So far, over 60,000 people have plunked down some dough for a preorder, according to the company.

The idea is to provide basic mobility to folks who couldn't otherwise afford a basic set of wheels. The cheapest new car on sale in the US, the Nissan Versa, goes for over 10 grand.

True, you could get a halfway decent used car for $7,000, but it probably wouldn't be as exotic as Elio's new machine. It also wouldn't get over 80 miles per gallon.

So what's the thing like? Well, it runs on gas and had a standard transmission, and two seats. Last year, Elio brought a prototype by our New York office, and we checked it out:

Goldman Sachs held a millennial conference for clients last week — here's what we found out

millennials

LONDON — Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) held its second annual "Young Professionals and Future Leaders" conference at its London office last week.

The afternoon event was conceived of by two junior employees at GSAM who wanted to host an event that could help them meet their counterparts who worked at companies they work with.

"It’s a really good opportunity to get the younger generation of our clients into the room," Antonia Benfield, one of the people involved in organising this year's event, told Business Insider.

"There are loads of people here that we haven’t necessarily spoken to before and it’s great to obviously make those connections now because the idea of the conference obviously is that we’ll all be future leaders."

This year's theme was "Millennials," the term used to refer to the generation born between 1980 and 2000 (the exact start and end dates can differ.)

Adam Collins, another organiser, said: "A lot of the conversation has potentially quite a condescending tone when you use the term millennial. I think the idea that these millennials are now growing up, or have actually grown up in many cases, to be the people who make the decisions and will continue to do so. To come up with a range of topics and ideas you can discuss about that, that was the idea."

Around 100 people attended the event, up from 30 last year. BI was among them — here's what we saw:

Investing in millennial-driven markets

The event kicked off with a presentation from Simon Barnard, who co-manages Goldman Sachs' millennials equity portfolio. Barnard jokes that he is "one of the oldest millennials in the world" before going on to explain that his fund focuses on investing in companies that he thinks are well positioned to benefit from millennials becoming the largest generation of consumers in the world today. There are an estimated 2.3 billion alive today, Barnard said, compared to 1.2 billion baby boomers.

Millennials are smarter consumers, Barnard said, and want price, convenience, and transparency. One of the biggest trends of their generation is tech-enabled consumption, with a preference for experiences and wellness over ownership and indulgence. As a result, Barnard points out that fast-food and pre-packed baby food companies are struggling to attract millennial consumers.

Barnard highlighted online video and autonomous cars as areas of interest for his fund. However, he eschewed big names in these sectors, saying that hyper-growth companies are often high risk as they can be quickly displaced at the top of the tree. Instead, Barnard highlighted an Israeli company called Mobileye as an example of a Goldman bet on autonomous cars. The company makes sensors that help cars create the HD maps needed for autonomous cars to become reality. In other words, it's an essential enabler to an autonomous car future.

Barnard then took questions from the floor. The audience offered up suitably millennial questions, asking: have you modelled how a 2008-style crisis would affect your portfolio? How seriously do you take cyber security risk at companies you invest in? Do you see combating climate change as an investment opportunity? He answered: yes, it should bounce back pretty quickly; seriously; not right now, further down the line.

China, millennials, and diversity

Barnard's talk was followed by one from Lin Yue, GSAM's executive director of UK and Irish institutional business. Her session was titled: "China, millennials, and diversity." Yue is originally from northeastern China. She said that the term "millennials" doesn't exist in China and her generation is instead referred to as "post-80s" or "post-90s."

Yue said that her generation lives in a "radically different world" to their parents and grandparents, who lived through the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s. By comparison, her generation has been spoiled, partly because of China's one-child policy, and are often referred to as the "little emperors."

Chinese millennials have grown up with fierce competition at home and are keen to explore the world, Yue said. Despite Western perspectives, only 30% of Chinese millennials believe their country will be the next global superpower.

Yue's point throughout her talk was that the term "millennials" is far too broad — people the same age can have wildly different priorities, outlooks, and ideas across different countries.

A key question from the audience was how China will cope with the rise of robotics and automation — Citi and Oxford University estimate that 77% of Chinese jobs could be at risk of automation. Yue said that there's actually a "huge desire to move out of the manufacturing chain" among Chinese. If a robot could do their boring manual labour job and free them up to do more interesting, creative jobs then that's great.

Startups & corporate culture: Discussions with Deliveroo

After a short break, the audience were treated to an interview with Philip Green — no, not the retail billionaire, but the CFO of food delivery startup Deliveroo.

Unfortunately, this talk was off the record, meaning we've agreed not to report what was said. But, broadly, Green covered what it's like to work at a startup, his advice to young professionals looking to get ahead, and some insights into where Deliveroo is right now.

Andrew Wilson, CEO of GSAM in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, told Business Insider after the talk that it is companies like Deliveroo that are the biggest challenge for Goldman when it comes to recruiting millennial talent.

He said: "The biggest pressures at the moment are probably in the technology space, whether it’s Facebook or Google or Amazon or whatever. They’re seen as being cool and people want to go there.

"We spend a lot of time at universities recruiting and try and explain what the career track looks like at an organisation like Goldman Sachs, the breadth of what we do, and the opportunities that come up as a result of that."

But he added: "I think we’ve always been focused on making sure we attract the very best people and I think it’s interesting that through time those industries [that compete for talent] have changed."

These are the eating and drinking regimes of 7 world famous athletes

Great Britain's Andy Murray celebrates during his match against Australia's Nick Kyrgios

Men and women reportedly consume an average of 2,800 and 2,300 calories per day respectively and exercise for half an hour — but for the world's top athletes, this is nowhere near enough.

Online betting and gaming company Ladbrokes recently looked at the diets and exercise regimes of famous athletes to see how their routines compare with everyday people.

Labrokes' research was based on interviews, stats, and trainer commentary within a range of different sports, from football to boxing.

From Andy Murray's 5,500 calorie day to MMA champion Conor McGregor's gruelling eight hours of exercise, this is how the world's top athletes eat and train.

Usain Bolt

Calories: 5,500

Exercise: 3.5 hours a day

Bolt has one of the most surprising diet routines on our list. According to The Huffington Post, he loves to eat chicken nuggets and wings in the morning before he hits the track — he ate an estimated 1,000 chicken nuggets while competing at the Beijing Olympics in 2012, according to Ladbrokes.

He maintains a diet made up of 60% protein, 30% carbs, and 10% fat, and often eats ackee and saltfish with dumplings, cooked banana, or sweet potato for breakfast.

Lunch is often made up of pasta with chicken, while dinner tends to be rice with peas and pork.

While he only trains 3.5 hours per day, compared to the eight hours undertaken by MMA champion Conor McGregor, he has said that he simply "concentrates on being the greatest at all times."

Andy Murray

Calories: 5,500

Exercise: 5.5 hours a day

On a regular training day, Murray eats muesli or porridge followed by eggs, bacon, and beans for breakfast. A fruit smoothie and protein and vegetables is on the menu for lunch. Dinner involves a soup, seafood, or salad starter, followed by chicken, potatoes, and vegetables, according to Men's Health.

The tennis superstar meditates in order to stay focused, according to Ladbrokes.

Venus Williams

Calories: 3,489

Exercise: 4.5 hours a day

According to Self, Williams starts her day with a green juice, protein smoothie, or fruit, or an egg white omelette or granola. She opts for vegan restaurants or rice, beans, and grilled shrimp for lunch, snacks on kale chips, dates, and cashews, and typically makes a salad with chicken for dinner.

Along with her intensive tennis training, Williams also dances to keep fit, according to Ladbrokes. She told People that she spends as much time in the gym as she does on the court.

The Apple 2

It turns out that Prague is home to the biggest private exhibition of Apple’s products in the world.

In the heart of the Czech Republic capital city's Old Town, the Apple Museum takes you through 41 years of the company's fascinating history.

As well as displaying almost every Apple product ever made, the museum is a tribute to the California company's late cofounder, Steve Jobs. Portraits of Jobs cover the museum's walls and his quotes are everywhere.

Here are some photos from its most impressive displays (shot on an iPhone 6 Plus)

The museum is in the centre of Prague's old town.

Its walls are full of Steve Jobs quotes — even on the outside.

This quote was from a speech Jobs gave to Stanford graduates in at a graduation ceremony in 2005:

"Stay Hungry. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."

Entry to the museum costs around £7.50 / $9.50 / €9 (depending on the exchange rate at the time) per adult.

Druid drive knox house tn1As a kid who grew up with futuristic video games, reruns of "The Jetsons" on TV Land, and an overactive imagination, I'm more than ready for the "house of the future."

But with so many smart-home products on the market, it's hard to separate the good ones from those that aren't quite ready for primetime.

I've used all the products on this list, except for the last one, and all of them have made my apartment smarter, and my life easier.

Amazon Echo

Every smart home needs a hub. Whether you opt to use Apple's HomeKit and Siri, Samsung's SmartThings and an app, or the Amazon's Echo and Alexa.

After going back and forth for almost a year about whether I was comfortable having an "always listening" device in my apartment, I decided to take the plunge. It's been great. In addition to being able to ask the Echo a whole bunch of questions about the news or weather, it gives you the ability to interact with smart-home products using only your voice. It's amazing.

Voice operation removes a layer of friction between me and my smart-home devices that I didn't know would be there. It's so much more natural and fluid than fumbling through an app. All of the devices on this list are Echo-compatible, and honestly, I wouldn't buy a smart-home product if it wasn't.

Amazon Echo, $179.99, available at Amazon

Philips Hue bulbs

My first post-Echo purchase was Hue bulbs. At first, they seem absolutely unnecessary, and while they're a definite luxury, they're extremely useful. My apartment only has one source of light — a ceiling lamp. It got annoying to get up and cross the room to flip the light switch before going to sleep each night. Instead, I say, "Alexa, turn off my bedroom lights," and boom, they're off.

I can also set the bulbs to rotate between different colors, which is nothing more than a fun party trick, but hey, it's nice to have fun once in a while! These bulbs were the smart-home device I was looking forward to trying the most, and they haven't disappointed.

Philips Hue Starter Kit (2nd Generation), $169.94, available at Amazon

A Philips Hue Lightstrip

In the same family as the Hue Bulbs, the Hue Lightstrip is a very thin, but very bright light strip. Once you have one set of Hue devices set up, it's dangerously simple to add more. This light strip lives in my kitchen, underneath a set of cabinets. Having these on all night (and able to be turned off with a single voice cue) has saved me a bunch of stubbed toes during nighttime trips to my bathroom.

Like Hue's bulbs, the power strip can be dimmed, which is great because I need these to be a room-filling nightlight, not a beacon.

Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus,$89.99, available at Amazon

Claudio Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri led Leicester City to the Premier League title in May 2016. Less than a year later he was sacked, with the Leicester board claiming a change of leadership was in "the club's greatest interest."

The removal of Ranieri from his managerial provoked genuine sadness, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ranking the decision as "mystifying" as Brexit and Donald Trump. Others were less emotional: BeIN Sports anchor Richard Keys claimed that there is "no place for misguided sentiment in football."

Either way, many Leicester fans made their feelings known before, during, and after the team's 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday. It was Leicester's first league win since December 2016.

Here are 5 photos that perfectly capture Leicester fans' anguish at the sacking of Claudio Ranieri

Comic book style graffiti decorates the Leicester streets.

Charismatic Claudio, known for his bonkers catchphrases, served as inspiration for Leicester's street artists as paintings of the Italian were spotted in the city centre ahead of the club's home game against Liverpool.

Match-going fans wore Ranieri face masks.

Leicester City supporters could be seen outside the King Power Stadium wearing Claudio Ranieri facemasks.

Messages of gratitude decorated the ground.

The stadium began to fill up as the 8 p.m. kick-off time approached and a large banner saying "Thank you Claudio" was unfurled in the home section.

Peugeot unveiled a stunning concept car that can drive itself

PEUGEOT INSTINCT CONCEPT

French car manufacturer Peugeot unveiled a stunning concept for an autonomous future, on Monday.

Called the Instinct Concept, the vehicle is designed to learn from your habits to adjust the driving experience accordingly. For example, the car can access your calendar to know when you are traveling to an important meeting and will adjust the route to ensure you get there with plenty of time.

Scroll down for a closer look at the concept:

SEE ALSO: 9 crazy concept cars already unveiled in 2017

The Peugeot not only envisions a future where self-driving cars are ubiquitous, but one where people rely on the Internet of Things ecosystem.

Although consumers are beginning to adopt connected internet devices like Amazon’s Alexa, we have yet to enter a reality where everyday homeowners are connecting their lights and TVs to the internet on a mass scale.

But that’s the kind of reality the Instinct Concept is meant to thrive in. Peugeot outlines a world where your car talks to your smartwatch to see if you’ve met your fitness goals, and if not, will park farther away to increase the number of steps you take.

The concept comes with four different driving modes — two for active, manual driving, and two separate autonomous modes. If you still want to maintain control of the car, there’s Drive Boost or Drive Relax.

Drive Boost is for true, sporty driving where you want to be in total control for winding roads. Drive Relax, on the other hand, uses semi-autonomous tech like advanced cruise control to assist the driver.

17 incredible women you've never heard of who changed the world

women's march on washington

Women have contributed an unbelievable amount of knowledge, discovery, and talent in every field throughout history.

Unfortunately, each and every woman doesn't get the credit and worldwide recognition they deserve. Seriously— you could help found a nation or discover a piece of the human anatomy and still get left in the dust, which is why Women's History Month is the perfect time to reflect on some of the lesser-known heroes out there.

These women haven't become household names (yet!), but everyone should know their incredible contributions. Here are 17 amazing women you should’ve heard of but probably haven’t:

Andrée de Jongh saved hundreds of Allied airmen escaping from the Nazis.

Andrée de Jongh, aka Dédée, was the woman who formed the Comet line that helped Allied airmen get safely through occupied Belgium and France, over the Pyrenees, and into Spain and Gibraltar.

At just 24 years old, Dédée saved 118 of the nearly 700 men throughout her 24 missions. When she was eventually captured, she came clean to the Nazis about her work with the resistance, but because of her young age, they didn't believe her and sent her to a concentration camp.

"I'm as strong as a man. Girls attract less attention in the frontier zone than men," de Jongh, who was later named a Belgian countess and awarded the George Medal, said when the British vice consul asked how she did it all

Martha Gellhorn made history as a war correspondent, most of whom were strictly men at the time.

She earned a bit of fame for her short-lived marriage to Ernest Hemingway in the '40s but she deserves her own accolades as well. Gellhorn, who famously said she didn't want to be "a footnote in someone else's life," was a legendary journalist who set a precedent as one of the first female war correspondents.

She reported from all over the world, including Asia and Europe, doing what many thought to be a man's job. Her work, which includes photographs, news articles, and novels, was a major contribution to world history and she's celebrated yearly when one outstanding journalist receives an award in her honor.

Alexandra David-Néel snuck into Tibet to learn more about Buddhism and the secretive community's culture.

David-Néel made a name for herself by traveling to remote corners of the world, which was very out of the ordinary for women of her time. She visited places that were forbidden to foreign travelers and encouraged thousands of people to make their way out east as well.

Her novels have long been a source of inspiration for budding travelers and her in-depth commentary on otherwise unknown cultures are still prevalent today.

SBC fight club

The INSIDER Summary:

• At a new fight club-style workout class, participants burn calories while swinging heavy weapons like samurai swords, daggers, and nunchucks.
• The class is offered in London by the Skinny Bitch Collective — an invite-only fitness club that is popular with models and celebrities like Ellie Goulding and Nicole Schwerzinger.
• Skinny Bitch Collective founder Russell Bateman told INSIDER that the class will be offered in NYC late 2017.

Most exercise classes don't involve swinging around a samurai sword or a pair of nunchucks.

But that's exactly what happens at SBC Fight, a new martial arts workshop offered by the Skinny Bitch Collective — a grueling fitness club for models and celebrities, with members like Ellie Goulding, Nicole Schwerzinger, and Nicole Harrison. The regular SBC class is also the hardest workout I have ever tried.

A foray into martial arts, SBC Fight incorporates replica weapons including swords and daggers into a challenging fight club-style workout.

The class is currently only offered in London, but it will be coming to New York City in late 2017, Skinny Bitch Collective founder and personal trainer Russell Bateman told INSIDER over email.

INSIDER spoke to Bateman to find out what goes on in a class. Here's what we learned.

Each SBC Fight class is 50 minutes long, and takes place inside a studio in central London.

Bateman started offering the workout to “empower women and equip them with defense tactics outside of the conventional realm," he told INSIDER, adding that it's "amazing for fitness.”

For now, the class is only for women, Bateman told Amuse.

While Bateman teaches the Skinny Bitch Collective classes himself, SBC Fight is taught by a martial arts instructor known only as Frank — or "Master Frank," as he is sometimes referred to on Instagram.

Beignets

From spicy Cajun seafood to deep-fried pastry treats, New Orleans is full of delicious food.

While there's no bad time to eat like a New Orleans local, there's also no better time than February 28, or Fat Tuesday — the culmination of Mardi Gras and the last day before lent, when it's completely acceptable to eat everything you want.

To mark the occasion, here are a handful of iconic Mardi Gras foods, and a bonus drink, to feast on.

King Cake

The carnival king of Mardi Gras food, this braided halo-shaped cake is flavored with cinammon and decorated in colorful icing. There's even a tiny plastic baby figurine stuffed inside — it's thought that whoever gets the baby in their slice has the best luck.

Shrimp Gumbo

This hearty bowl of deliciousness consists of shrimp, andouille sausage chunks, green peppers, celery and onion in a mildly spicy sauce.

Maque Choux

This braised, one-pot dish involves cooking healthy ingredients — tomatoes, corn, onion, and peppers — in bacon fat. It makes a great side dish.

There are thousands of women pushing boundaries and shattering glass ceilings everyday so that future generations won't have to worry that their dreams aren't achievable.

Each of these historic triumphs helped move the women's movement forward and they've inspired young children — of all genders! — realize that they can do anything they set their minds to.

Here are 21 impressive women who broke through barriers:

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to go to space in 1963.

She recently confirmed that the rumor is true: the space agency really did forget to send a toothbrush up with her for the legendary flight.

"Unfortunately it is a fact," Dr. Tereshkova said while speaking at London's Science Museum. "But I'm very resourceful as any woman would be. I had my toothpaste, and I had my hand, and I had water."

Mae Carol Jemison went to space 29 years later in 1992, becoming the first African-American woman in space.

She's spent years speaking on the benefits of getting young children — regardless of their gender, nationality, or race — into the STEM fields and into space.

"It's important not only for a little black girl growing up to know, yeah, you can become an astronaut because here's Mae Jemison. But it's important for older white males who sometimes make decisions on those careers of those little black girls," she said during an interview with the Associated Press.

Wilma Mankiller was the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee tribe in 1985.

After she died at age 64 in 2010, President Barack Obama made a statement in her honor.

"As the Cherokee Nation's first female chief, she transformed the nation-to-nation relationship between the Cherokee Nation and the federal government, and served as an inspiration to women in Indian Country and across America," he said.

Donald TrumpPresident Donald Trump is set to give a speech to a joint session of Congress Tuesday evening and government spending is likely to be a big part of the discussion.

We took a look at the opinions Americans hold about various major government spending areas to get a sense of what the public could be looking for from coming budget negotiations.

The "General Social Survey," a project of the independent research organization NORC at the University of Chicago, has been tracking several aspects of American life since 1972. Business Insider looked at the results of several survey questions about Americans' views on federal-spending priorities between the 1970s and 2014, the most recent year for which data is available.

Here is what Americans think about 13 major spending areas.

London did not rank anywhere near the top of the rankings in a new report that listed the safest places in Britain.

Provident Personal Credit surveyed 2,642 people in a new report entitled "Unbroken Britain," and residents were asked to rate on a scale of 1-10 on how they felt within their community.

Many northern and Scottish places made the top of the list but notably Britain's capital did not even make it into the top 20.

However, comparing the rankings this month, to those last made in September 2016, some dropped dramatically down the list.

Take a look who made the top 17:

17. Manchester — 7.32. The major city in the northwest of England is considered safe, although local crime has slightly risen since the last rankings were published in September 2016.

16. Cambridge — 7.35. The university city is one of the safest in Britain, thanks to its peaceful surroundings. Anti-social behaviour accounts for the largest proportion of crime in the region, according to Cambridgeshire Constabulary.

15. Cardiff — 7.36. The port city on the south coast of Wales is a hub for employment and nightlife but is still considered one of the safest in the UK, unlike London.

They concentrate on ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UNHWI), those with over $30 million (£24 million) in assets, to create an index of the most important cities for the super-rich.

The index is based on factors such as the the current population of ultra-wealthy, the total amount of private investment in property during 2016, how many inbound and outbound first and business class flights the city had, and the potential to grow numbers of the the super rich in 10 years.

Asian cities, such as Shanghai and Tokyo, are quickly rising through the ranks.

Here are the top 14 cities that made the cut:

14. Seoul – The South Korean capital might not be the most connected city for the wealthy, but it ranks as the 12th in the world for its prospects attracting the super rich in the next 10 years.

13. Frankfurt – The German financial capital could be the one to benefit most from Brexit by stripping London of its role of the European Union's centre of high finance.

12. Paris — France's capital has slipped out of the top 10, but still manages to maintain its position as the second highest European city in the index.

Bath

LONDON — Lloyds Bank has ranked the least affordable cities in the UK as part of its annual Affordable Cities Review.

The research revealed that home affordability is "at its worst since 2008," with the average city price of a house outpacing earnings growth over the past five years.

Lloyds Bank worked out house prices as a multiple
of average annual earnings. So the average city house price in the UK is £224,926 this year, a 6.9 multiple of average earnings of £32,796.

"City living is becoming increasingly expensive with average house prices at least ten times average annual earnings in five of the UK’s cities," said Andy Mason, Lloyds Bank Mortgage Products Director.

"Affordability levels have worsened for four consecutive years as average city house prices continue to rise more steeply than average wage growth."

Here are the 20 least affordable cities to live in the UK.

20. Gloucester

House prices here are 7.2 times higher than the average salary.

19. Leicester

House prices as a multiple of earnings: 7.6

18. York

House prices as a multiple of earnings:7.6
