Meet all the breakout stars in the horror movie everyone is talking about — 'Get Out'

0

get out garden party

"Get Out," the new horror movie directed by Jordan Peele, is one of the biggest horror phenomenons to come in years.

It gives us terrific roles for actors we already know. There's Allison Williams, best known for the HBO show "Girls;" Catherine Keener, who's been in everything from "Being John Malkovich" to "The 40-Year-Old Virgin;" and Bradley Whitford, who's received numerous awards for his roles in "The West Wing" and "Transparent."

The movie also gives us some more obscure — but no less talented — actors who are on the rise. With the critical acclaim and popularity of "Get Out," you'll be hearing these names a lot more.

SEE ALSO: How the company behind 2 of the year's biggest movies is blowing up the Hollywood playbook

Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris, the movie's lead role.

Kaluuya's coming-of-age experience in the entertainment industry was in the British version of the TV series "Skins." He played Posh Kenneth, and he also wrote for the series. After the show, he bounced around British television, guest-starring in shows like "Silent Witness" and "Doctor Who."

2011 was the beginning of Kaluuya's breakout. He starred in the "Fifteen Million Merits" episode of "Black Mirror,"considered one of the best of the series. When Netflix picked up the series, his face became more familiar to audiences in the United States, including Jordan Peele, who saw him and cast him in "Get Out."

"What's happened is that 'Black Mirror' has come out on Netflix. Jordan said he watched that and he really just thought of me for the role,"Kaluuya told Interview magazine.

Kaluuya also starred in "Sicario" and he'll be in Marvel's upcoming "Black Panther" movie. He's also writing a movie of his own. He's also been writing a movie of his own since 2013, he told Interview, and it's on track for production.

Lil Rey Howery makes "Get Out" hilarious.

Milton "Lil Rey" Howery is the reason the movie isn't just clever — it's really, really funny. He plays Rod, a TSA agent and Chris's best friend, and the only black person Chris can confide in during the movie.

Howery is a rising stand-up comedian from Chicago. He's a writer, producer, and regular actor in the sketch comedy show "Friends of the People," and he's a co-star in "The Carmichael Show." Last year, Netflix picked up his hour-long stand-up comedy special, "Kevin Hart Presents: Lil Rel: RELevent."

Caleb Landry Jones is Rose's creepy brother.

Jones is best known for his horror movie roles, first with 2010's "The Last Exorcism" and later "Antiviral" and the thriller "Contraband." He also had a small role as Banshee in "X-Men: First Class."

He'll soon be starring with Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleeson in "American Made," a biopic about the American arms and drugs smuggler Barry Seal, directed by Doug Liman.

Nintendo's new console is here — here's why its last one was secretly a work of genius

super smash wii u

Pity the poor Wii U.

When the game console was introduced in 2012 as Nintendo's successor to the smash-hit Wii, expectations were high that the Japanese game company would once again create a monster hit.

Instead, the Wii U has been a huge flop, selling just over 13 million units in the past four years. The original Wii sold about 84 million consoles in the same period.

Today, the final nail is in the Wii U's coffin with the release of the Nintendo Switch— a unique hybrid TV/portable console that's already getting positive reviews.

So let's look back at the Wii U, why it never took off, and why it doesn't really deserve the bad rap it's gotten over the years.

SEE ALSO: REVIEW: Nintendo's new game console is a fast, competent piece of hardware without enough software

The Wii U's whole sales pitch is that its primary controller, the Wii U Gamepad, is also a touch-screen "tablet." But it stops working entirely if it gets too far from the console, so don't get any big ideas.

It means two big things. First, games can get touch-screen controls — games like "New Super Mario Bros. U" for the Wii U let one player touch the screen to freeze enemies or hold moving platforms in place.

Second, it means you can actually play many Wii U games on the smaller screen by itself, no TV required. It's a handy thing if you live somewhere where TV time is hard to come by.

This robot can 3D-print and bake a pizza in six minutes

beehex

Today's robots are pretty extraordinary. They can paint incredible works of art, run lettuce farms, and even act like humans (sort of).

One Silicon Valley startup called BeeHex  has even invented a bot that can 3D-print pizza.

The inventors received a $125,000 grant from NASA to develop the device in 2016, cofounder Jordan French told Business Insider at the time. NASA was looking for a bot that could easily make something delicious (as opposed to normal, unappetizing space food) for astronauts during future Mars missions.

The startup has since shifted to adapting the prototype for the commercial market. In February, TechCrunch reported that it raised $1 million in seed funding to launch its first product, a pizza printer called the Chef 3D.

Starting later this year, the Chef 3D will appear at select theme parks, sports arenas, and malls. Compared to human workers, the robot is faster, cleaner, and more consistent, French says. Only one person is needed to work the machine, which can lay down the dough, sauce, and cheese for a 12-inch pizza in one minute, before you pop it in an oven for five.

Check it out below.

SEE ALSO: This £600 robot steams and folds clothes twice as fast as humans

BeeHex's bot, called the Chef 3D, can produce any type of pizza in any shape, French says. Like most 3D printers, it hooks up to a computer that tells it which dough, sauce, and cheese to use.

The team hasn't finalized which brands will carry it, but Six Flags may sign on, French says. Customers will be able to order them at kiosks, which may look like this.

Customers will also eventually be able to order pizzas through the BeeHex app, which will ping them when they're ready. First, you choose the pizza's size (10 or 12-inch), dough (plain, tomato, or gluten-free), sauce (tomato basil, pesto, or vodka), and cheese (mozzarella or burrata).

Depending on the size, toppings, dough, and location, a Beehex pizza will cost anywhere from $8 to $15. More options will be available in the future, including thicker crusts and larger sizes.

This couple spent 7 months riding a motorbike from Alaska to Argentina for their honeymoon

broadway:couch

The INSIDER Summary:

• For their honeymoon, Tom and Lorna Broadway rode from Alaska to Argentina on a motorbike.
• They carried everything they needed to camp along the way for seven months.
• They're writing a series of children's books inspired by their trip and the teddy bear they brought along.

There's an old saying among motorcycle lovers: "Driving a car is like watching a movie, riding a motorcycle is like starring in one."

"Please don't quote me on that because it's a little bit too corny, but that's how it feels," Tom Broadway told INSIDER. (Sorry, Tom. It's too good.)

He and his wife Lorna are approaching their one-year anniversary, and they've spent much of their first year of marriage on a motorbike. The English couple leveraged Lorna's sabbatical year from her teaching job and their shared love of travel to ride 25,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina. Their seven-month-long honeymoon, as chronicled on their website Adventure Freeway, is worthy of its own film.

Tom has always loved motorbikes, and Lorna is "deeply passionate" about travel.

"The combination of the two worked well," said Tom. "Within a couple weeks of meeting each other, we were saying we should go traveling on a motorbike."

In fact, Tom proposed to Lorna by saying that he wanted to do their epic motorcycle trip as husband and wife.

When Lorna got a sabbatical year from her job as a schoolteacher, they seized the opportunity to make it happen.

Banksy's latest political art project is a real hotel overlooking the barrier in the West Bank

Banksy West Bank Hotel

Banksy is back with his latest interactive art installation, and it's sure to ruffle a few feathers.

The anonymous artist has teamed up with local operators to create a working nine-room hotel overlooking the border wall that separates the city of Bethlehem. It's called the Walled Off Hotel, and it's full to the brim with the politically charged artwork Banksy is known for.

Though Banksy usually leaves it to his viewers to interpret his pieces, this time he ensured onlookers would get the message.

"If we wash our hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless we side with the powerful — we don't remain neutral," he spray painted on the wall.

The wall was built by Israel in the early 2000s to stop Palestinian suicide bombers. In 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled the wall was built illegally, according to the Telegraph.

The hotel will begin accepting reservations this month for both its luxury rooms and dormitory-style rooms. A bed bunk in a dorm runs $30 a night.

SEE ALSO: 29 photos from Banksy's twisted 'Dismaland' theme park

The hotel is situated on the Palestinian side of the West Bank in Bethlehem. Its proximity to the barrier wall is such that guests and visitors never forget that fact. According to owner Wisam Salsaa, it's the "hotel with the worst view in the world."

A monkey dressed as a porter is the first artwork to greet guests.

The interior was designed to look like a 20th-century British colonial hotel.

15 mega-billionaires who made a fortune last year

Mark Zuckerberg

Bill Gates is once again the richest man in the world, adding another $10.6 billion to his net worth in the past year. Not a bad haul, but four other billionaires actually outearned Gates in the past year.

Using data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which recently relaunched and expanded online to include 500 billionaires across the globe, Business Insider ranked which of the 30 richest billionaires in the world gained the most wealth in the past year.

Bloomberg's ranking updates daily to provide up-to-the-minute data on the world's wealthiest men and women, but for this ranking, wealth figures were used for the period starting February 28, 2016 and ending March 1, 2017. You can read about the billionaire index's full methodology here.

The two biggest gainers in the past year were Wang Wei, who added $22.7 billion to his fortune as the founder and majority owner of China's largest package delivery company, and Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, who boosted his fortune by $21.9 billion thanks to Amazon's strong performance.

From tech moguls to skilled investors to retail giants, read on for the 15 billionaires whose wealth grew the most in the past year.

Note that Bloomberg does not report the net worth of its founder and owner Michael Bloomberg, who does not appear on this ranking, though other sources peg his fortune at roughly $45 billion

14. TIE: Sergey Brin

Net worth:$41.6 billion

Net worth increase: $4.1 billion

Age: 43

Country: US

Industry: Technology

Source of wealth: Self-made; Google

Along with cofounder Larry Page, Sergey Brin helped facilitate Google's massive restructuring, which the company announced in 2015. The move put Google under the auspices of a holding company called Alphabet, run by Brin as president and Page as CEO. Google's other ventures, such as Nest and Google X, are separate companies also under the Alphabet umbrella.

The restructuring allowed Brin to focus on exploring inventive new "moonshot" projects and ideas. With top talent and an abundance of resources at its disposal, Alphabet has already made automated homes and self-driving cars a reality.

Brin, who emigrated from Moscow to the US as a child, connected with Page in 1995 at Stanford, where they were each pursuing a PhD. Three years later they founded Google, now one of the most powerful companies on the planet.

14. TIE: Li Ka-shing

Net worth:$30.6 billion

Net worth increase: $4.1 billion

Age: 88

Country: Hong Kong

Industry: Diversified investments

Source of wealth: Self-made; CK Hutchison Holdings

Despite humble beginnings, business magnate Li Ka-shing has become the wealthiest man in Hong Kong. After his father died of tuberculosis, Li dropped out of school at 16 to support his family, working in a factory making plastic flowers. Six years later, he opened his own factory, the predecessor to what's known today as CK Hutchison Holdings, a vast business empire with interests in real estate, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, and technology.

A savvy investor, Li and his venture-capital fund Horizon Ventures have backed companies like Facebook, Skype, Spotify, and the egg-replacement food startup Hampton Creek.

Two years ago, Li reorganized his business affairs under two new listed companies, one entity for property holdings and another for all other global assets. The move is most likely in preparation to hand over control of his sprawling fortune to his son, but the 88-year-old doesn't have any plans of slowing down just yet. In August 2015, he opened the 12,000th location of AS Watson, CK Hutchison's health and beauty-products retailer, now the largest in the world. Li's net worth rose by $4.1 billion over the past year.

13. Larry Page

Net worth:$42.5 billion

Net worth increase: $4.3 billion

Age: 43

Country: US

Industry: Technology

Source of wealth: Self-made; Google

As a Stanford PhD student in 1998, Larry Page teamed up with classmate Sergey Brin to create BackRub, an early search engine. The project eventually morphed into Google — now called Alphabet — one of the largest and farthest-reaching companies in the world, worth more than $581 billion. Over the past year, Page's personal net worth has increased by $4.3 billion.

Page oversaw major changes to Google's business structure in 2015, starting with the creation of Alphabet, the holding company that manages Google and all of its related ventures, including Nest, Calico, and Google X. Previously the chief executive of Google, Page moved up to helm Alphabet, which has its hands in everything from home automation to self-driving carsto prolonging human life.

Page doesn't make a lot of splashy purchases, but the alternative-energy advocate does own an eco-friendly mansion in Palo Alto that uses geothermal energy and rainwater capture. He's also an avid kiteboarder.

13 unexpected costs of having a kid

0

dad with baby

First-time parents face a mountain of expenses, from top-of-the-line nursery furniture to dozens of teensy polka-dotted socks.

But filling a nursery isn't the only thing making demands on a new parent's wallet. Unscheduled doctor's visits, utility bill spikes, and the ever-increasing cost of childcare can hit new parents' bank accounts with a variety of unexpected costs.

While everyone's experience is different, a little foresight can be great for the budget. So we reached out and asked real parents, including our Business Insider colleagues: What costs did you not see coming before your baby was born?

Here's what they said:

The cost of convenience

Andrew Key, who runs the website Living Rich Cheaply, didn't expect that he would lose his inclination to comparison shop after his son's birth last July.

"I like to consider myself a savvy shopper, and I always try to find the best price. But when you're sleep deprived and have a crying baby at home, you just buy whatever it is you need at the most convenient place," he explains. "Most times, the closest place doesn't have the lowest price, but it's not worth it to comparison shop when you're short on time."

Bottles

A few bottles aren't so expensive — but what about when you have to buy every kind?

"No one really talks about it, but sometimes babies refuse to drink from the bottle," explains Key. "When my wife returned to work, my son would not drink from the bottle, which was pretty stressful, as he was extra fussy. We bought a bunch of different bottles until we found one that he was willing to drink from."

Utility bills

They say a baby should always wear one more layer than you do, but keeping the house warmer will cost you.

"The one cost that I didn't even think of was the increase in utilities," says Grayson Bell of Eyes on the Dollar, who had a 15-month-old at the time he spoke with Business Insider. "My wife and I are very hot-natured and love our home cold all year round. Since our son was born after Christmas, our home was cold, but that quickly had to change. We now pay double for our electricity bill and 30% more for our water."

The same holds true for babies born in the summer as well.

"We had a bag of tricks to get through NYC's muggy summers in our top-floor apartment with nonexistent roof insulation — by turning off the AC units, turning on fans, and sleeping on top of the covers — but this wasn't an option for us with our newborn, who was born right as summer started," said Dave Mosher, science correspondent for Business Insider. "A sleepy baby (and her sleepy parents) kept us anchored at home and using the A/C all of the time."

Here's how the cast of 'Logan' looks compared to their comic-book counterparts

0

logan wolverine

Wolverine is back in theaters March 3 for one last ride in "Logan."

While some familiar faces appear in the movie, there are a few new ones who may leave you for a loop. Here's who the characters are in the comics and how they compare to their comic-book counterparts.

SEE ALSO: RANKED: The 10 worst movies to win the best picture Oscar — and what should have won

Let's start with an easy one. Hugh Jackman is back for one more go around as Wolverine.

The film takes place in 2029 so we see the mutant with impervious claws as a slightly older, aged version of his former self. His look is a nod to Mark Millar's "Old Man Logan" series, which featured Logan in an alternate apocalyptic future where supervillains rule the United States.

Sir Patrick Stewart also reprises his role as mutant teacher Professor X/Charles Xavier.

Professor X is one of the strongest mutants to have ever lived, having telekinetic powers. The founder of the X-Men and the private school for young mutants isn't in the best of shape in "Logan" and requires special care and attention from Wolverine.

Stephen Merchant plays Caliban, a mutant who can track other mutants' locations.

If Caliban appears familiar it's because he appeared in last year's "X-Men: Apocalypse." There, he was played by Tómas Lemarquis and was siding with the villains. His frail skin needs to be covered in the sunlight or he'll be severely burned instantly.

Newly confirmed Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has chopped the price of his Manhattan penthouse to $16.5 million, Curbed NY reported

He and wife Hilary Geary Ross had listed the 5,573-square-foot apartment for $21 million in 2015 before lowering it to $18.5 million last year. Located on West 57th Street — a section of New York that's been dubbed "Billionaires' Row"— the duplex penthouse has four bedrooms, five and a half baths, and a terrace with more than 1,800 square feet of space.

The highest-paid player on every NBA team

0
0

lebron james

Despite a salary cap and maximum salaries, there is still a big disparity in the NBA in terms of how much teams pay their top players.

But unlike the NFL, where top salaries fluctuate each year because of signing and roster bonuses, NBA contracts are fairly straightforward with just a base salary. The result is that NBA teams have more year-to-year consistency in which players are receiving the most money.

Here are the 30 players who will make the most money on their teams this year, ranked by their 2016-17 salaries, using data obtained from Spotrac and ESPN.

30. Jerryd Bayless, Philadelphia 76ers — $9.4 million

Position: Point guard

Contract: 3 years, $27.0 million

One thing to know: Following the divorce from Sam Hinkie, the 76ers decided to spend a little bit of money and bring in a veteran point guard. They turned to Bayless, the former Bucks backup, and now he is the top-paid player on a team in which most of the players are still playing on their rookie contracts.

29. Rudy Gay, Sacramento Kings — $13.3 million

Position: Small forward

Contract: 3 years, $40 million (Gay can opt out of the contract following the 2016-17 season)

One thing to know: Gay inherited the title of Kings highest-paid player when DeMarcus Cousins was traded to the Pelicans. But the title will be short-lived as he has already informed the Kings that he will opt out of his contract this summer.

28. Ricky Rubio, Minnesota Timberwolves — $13.4 million

Position: Point guard

Contract: 4 years, $55.0 million

One thing to know: Despite on-going rumors of a potential trade to the Knicks prior to the trade deadline, Rubio remains with the Timberwolves for now. He still has two years left on his contract in which he will make $14.1 million and $14.8 million.

A judging panel, made up of photojournalists from TIME and Condé Nast Traveler as well as prize-winning photographers, selected the winning photo as well as first, second, and third place winners in three different categories — "beauty,""360," and "drones in use."

It also awarded prizes for the most popular photos, judged by the most "likes" they received on SkyPixel.

Photo of the Year was awarded to "Fishermen close to the net," taken by Ge Zheng in Fujian Province in China. "Reflections, colours, and the unique aerial perspective create a startling composition from netting, poles, and water," according to SkyPixel.

Great Britain's Andy Murray celebrates during his match against Australia's Nick Kyrgios

Men and women reportedly consume an average of 2,800 and 2,300 calories per day respectively and exercise for half an hour — but for the world's top athletes, this is nowhere near enough.

Online betting and gaming company Ladbrokes recently looked at the diets and exercise regimes of famous athletes to see how their routines compare with everyday people.

Labrokes' research was based on interviews, stats, and trainer commentary within a range of different sports, from football to boxing.

From Andy Murray's 5,500 calorie day to MMA champion Conor McGregor's gruelling eight hours of exercise, this is how the world's top athletes eat and train.

Usain Bolt

Calories: 5,500

Exercise: 3.5 hours a day

Bolt has one of the most surprising diet routines on our list. According to The Huffington Post, he loves to eat chicken nuggets and wings in the morning before he hits the track — he ate an estimated 1,000 chicken nuggets while competing at the Beijing Olympics in 2012, according to Ladbrokes.

He maintains a diet made up of 60% protein, 30% carbs, and 10% fat, and often eats ackee and saltfish with dumplings, cooked banana, or sweet potato for breakfast.

Lunch is often made up of pasta with chicken, while dinner tends to be rice with peas and pork.

While he only trains 3.5 hours per day, compared to the eight hours undertaken by MMA champion Conor McGregor, he has said that he simply "concentrates on being the greatest at all times."

Andy Murray

Calories: 5,500

Exercise: 5.5 hours a day

On a regular training day, Murray eats muesli or porridge followed by eggs, bacon, and beans for breakfast. A fruit smoothie and protein and vegetables is on the menu for lunch. Dinner involves a soup, seafood, or salad starter, followed by chicken, potatoes, and vegetables, according to Men's Health.

The tennis superstar meditates in order to stay focused, according to Ladbrokes.

Venus Williams

Calories: 3,489

Exercise: 4.5 hours a day

According to Self, Williams starts her day with a green juice, protein smoothie, or fruit, or an egg white omelette or granola. She opts for vegan restaurants or rice, beans, and grilled shrimp for lunch, snacks on kale chips, dates, and cashews, and typically makes a salad with chicken for dinner.

Along with her intensive tennis training, Williams also dances to keep fit, according to Ladbrokes. She told People that she spends as much time in the gym as she does on the court.

While the world of Disney films may have began with animation and princess' castles, Walt's kingdom has become much, much more.

Since its first film in 1937, the company has released some of the most iconic blockbusters ever, packing out cinemas across the globe.

At the end of 2016, Disney provided Business Insider with a complete list of every single feature film it has released throughout history, compiled by year of release.

We then researched the box office numbers for the films on the list in order to determine which was most successful each year since 1937.

Only films that went straight to theatre, and have publicly available box office figures, have been included in our ranking. The numbers are based on US lifetime gross figures provided by Box Office Mojo and IMDB.

Scroll down to see the highest-grossing Disney film every year since 1937.

The 10 most popular advertising CEOs

As much as advertising can be a creative pursuit, it's a relationship business too.

And advertising bosses aren't just required to keep their clients sweet — just like any CEO, they should also maintain a happy staff too.

We asked Glassdoor, the careers site where employees can leave anonymous reviews about their employers, to see who the most popular CEOs are in the advertising business. The top 10 — which consists of leaders from all areas of the advertising industry — is ranking by the CEOs' Glassdoor approval rating.

Methodology: Glassdoor's ranking was based on reviews published between 1/29/15 and 2/28/17 (so the approval ratings here may be different from those you see on the Glassdoor website, which aggregates every single CEO rating through history).

Glassdoor tracked all sorts of advertising businesses including traditional agencies, performance marketing companies, and ad tech vendors. The ranking only looked at companies that have 30 or more employee reviews globally.

As always with anonymous platforms, we can't ascertain the veracity of the reviews, but on aggregate, they still give a good indication as to where employees are happiest.

10. Grey Group CEO Jim Heekin

Approval rating: 89%

They said:

Pros —"Great people and plenty of room to make your voice heard."

"Fairly low-stress work environment."

Cons —"A sweat shop – cannot believe some of the other comments posted here about work/life balance."

"Long hours including weekends whenever they need you."

9. Videology CEO Scott Ferber

Approval rating: 90%

They said:

Pros— "They strike a great work-life balance."

"Fast-paced work environment; great company growth and success; lots of responsibility; room to grow; effort is rewarded; passionate execs."

Cons— "Very fast-paced with little direction from senior management."

"There are about 10x as many butts in seats as there are really smart people."

Tied in 6th place. R/GA CEO Bob Greenberg

Approval rating: 91%

They said:

Pros —"Super smart people challenging conventions."

"Some talented people across the network."

Cons —"Work-life balance could be better."

"Be prepared for hard work and long hours."
