Hyperloop One just unveiled its first full-scale test track in Nevada — here's a closer look

Hyperloop One is inching closer to its first public trial.

The startup released images of its development site (DevLoop) for the first time on Tuesday. Hyperloop One said in a press release that the first public trial on the full-scale system will occur in the first half of 2017. That's slightly later than the company's original timeline — a press release from October said the trial will occur in the first quarter of this year.

Hyperloop One declined to comment on why the timeline has been pushed back.

Still, construction on the DevLoop is progressing — here's a closer look at what's to come:

SEE ALSO: Here's how Hyperloop One's massive, high-speed transport system will work

The DevLoop is 500 meters long (1,640 feet) and has a diameter of 3.3 meters (just under 11 feet.) It's located in the Nevada desert, just 30 minutes from Las Vegas.

The development track will be two miles long when it's completed.

The public trial expected to occur in the first half of this year will serve as Hyperloop One's first test on a full-scale, development site. The startup conducted a public test on a prototype system in the same area in May 2016.

You can read more about the test on the prototype system here.

In November, Hyperloop One signed an agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to evaluate building a Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Hyperloop One is currently conducting a feasibility study with McKinsey & Co. and the Bjarke Ingels Group for the system.

I checked out 2 shows at the biggest art event in New York — here are the highlights

Armory Week is the art-world equivalent of Fashion Week, Sundance, or South By Southwest. The event, which just wrapped up in New York City, takes its name from the Armory Show art fair, though there are several other independently run art fairs happening at the same time.

These fairs function like trade shows for art galleries. A bunch of galleries from around the globe exhibit under one roof and try to sell their best new works to collectors that might otherwise not see them. They're annual destination events for art professionals, tote bag enthusiasts, and well-to-do collectors.

Each fair is a little different. I checked out NADA— a non-profit focused on art done by emerging artists and presented by new dealers — and the titular Armory Show, one of the highest-attended art fairs in the world. Here's what I saw.

SEE ALSO: One of the most infamous homes in the Hamptons is on the market for nearly $20 million — and it's got a brand-new look

I arrived at NADA, which was held in an unassuming building in Manhattan. NADA has been one of my favorite fairs to attend in the past, and it tends to be younger and more cutting-edge. NADA felt a little different this year, as it had a new time, new location, and a new collaborator in Kickstarter.

Once inside, I checked in.

Then it was time to check out some gallery booths.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 15 actors who have been killed off 'The Walking Dead'

$

the walking dead

"The Walking Dead" is notorious for having no mercy. Similar to "Game of Thrones," the producers behind the scenes at "TWD" have been known to kill off fan-favorites in the blink of an eye. They've said goodbye to tons of walkers and what seems like hundreds of minor characters, but they've also bid farewell to many cast members. Only five are left standing from the original cast, and with the way things have been going, there's no telling how long that will last.

Luckily, the actors behind so many of those roles are still alive and well.

Here's what they are all up to now:

Carol’s daughter Sophia was played by Madison Lintz and died in season 2 at The Greene family farm.

After searching for her all season, it was heartbreaking to find out Sofia was locked up at the farm where everyone was staying all along.

Since her days of being locked up in a farm, Lintz has taken a recurring role on Amazon's murder mystery "Bosch."

She also acted in"Parental Guidance" alongside Billy Crystal and Bette Midler and took a small role in a "Nashville" episode.

Jeffrey DeMunn's character, Dale, was killed that season too.

You might have recognized him from his earlier work in "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption."

The 13 best companies in Britain to work for as a woman

Kay Burley

LONDON — March 8 is International Women's Day, a day where women globally are celebrated for their achievements across all fields of work and facets of society. The day is also a means to raise the continuing issues of gender inequality and the fight towards equality.

Obviously, no one is suggesting that women have achieved total equality in the workplace. A significant gender pay gap still exists, female CEOs are still a rarity, and sexist dress codes persist in many offices.

However, in recent years, the vast majority of workplaces have made efforts to become more inclusive and welcoming places for female staff members.

To celebrate this fact, jobs marketplace Glassdoor scoured its listings and reviews to find a set of UK companies that are doing the most to champion and encourage women in workplace — whether that's through gender diversity initiatives, extra generous maternity leave allowances, or on-site facilities for new mothers.

Check out Glassdoor's choices below:

UKFast

What they do: Hosting and cloud computing provider based in the northern city of Manchester.

What employees say: "Amazing office not far from city centre, with gym, steam room, creche, games area, big screen and bean bags aplenty. Great team and great attitude. Awesome perks - trips abroad, meals out, parties/events, rewards and incentives."— Current Employee

What they're doing to help women: Glassdoor reports that UKFast offers 16 weeks of maternity leave on full pay, and a free on-site creche.

Sky

What they do: Provides TV, broadband and phone service to much of the UK. Part of the Murdoch media empire.

What employees say: "Excellent campus and work environment. Great balance of diversity across the UK employees."— Current Employee

What they're doing to help women: Created the Women in Leadership initiative, formally targeting that 50% of its senior executives should be female. "Today a third of our senior leaders are women.  Our aim is to move that to a half," Sky says on its website.

Barclays

What they do: One of Britain's largest and most recognisable banking groups.

What employees say: "Due to flexible work pattern I was able to return to work after becoming a mum and progress further in my career (which is very fast paced) the flex makes this possible."— Current Employee

What they're doing to help women: Barclays has created numerous initiatives to forward the cause of women in the workplace, including its Women in Technology Group, which encourages young women to get into the growing number of technology jobs in banking.

The top 33 NFL free agents

brandon marshall

NFL free agency is now underway with teams and players permitted to negotiate contracts for two days, and on Thursday, players can begin to sign contracts.

While the NFL's free agency is slightly more strict than, say, the NBA or MLB, players who don't get hit with the franchise tag can still cause bidding wars and earn big-time contracts from teams looking for a boost.

This year's free agent class is heavy on defenders and linemen, and while they aren't the flashiest positions, they're still crucial to any football team's success.

Below, we've collected the 33 best free agents this year, including some of the top names who have been hit with the franchise tag. After seeing what happened to Josh Norman and the Panthers last year, you never know!

Check out the big names below.

* indicates a player who's been given the franchise tag. "PFF grade" refers to Pro Football Focus' player grades.

Le'Veon Bell, RB*

Age: 25

Previous team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Key 2016 stats: 261 carries, 1,268 rushing yards, 4.9 yards per carry, seven touchdowns, 88.3 PFF grade

One thing to know: The Steelers tagged Bell early in the offseason and some think they may still try to agree to a long-term deal for one of the league's most versatile running backs.

Kirk Cousins, QB*

Age: 28

Previous team: Washington Redskins

Key 2016 stats: 4,917 yards, 67% completion, 25 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 85.9 PFF grade

One thing to know: Cousins was also hit with the franchise tag, and he and the Redskins are reportedly still talking about long-term contracts. But according to MMQB's Albert Breer, the 'Skins don't seem sold on Cousins as the QB of the future.

Melvin Ingram, LB*

Age: 27

Previous team: San Diego Chargers

Key 2016 stats: Eight sacks, four forced fumbles, 88.1 PFF grade

One thing to know: The Chargers have said they also want to come to long-term deal with Melvin Ingram. Ingram was Pro Football Focus' sixth-highest graded edge defender in 2016.

The 5 best reasons you should buy a Nintendo Switch

$
0
0

The new hybrid video-game console from Nintendo is out now, and it's off to a strong start: The Switch is already Nintendo's fastest-selling game console.

Nintendo Switch

Like so many things lately, its success comes as a surprise to experts in the field — the $299 console isn't very competitive on paper, and it wasn't a guaranteed success in concept.

  • It's underpowered compared with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, both of which cost the same (or less, depending on the model).
  • It has a paltry game library compared with the competition.
  • Because of its lack of horsepower, major games released on multiple platforms (think: "Assassin's Creed,""Call of Duty,""Grand Theft Auto," etc.) won't ever come to the Switch.

But actually using the Switch is a surprising delight. I've had the Switch for three weeks, and it has quickly become a part of my daily life. This is why.

SEE ALSO: The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever

DON'T MISS: I'm enjoying the Nintendo Switch much, much more than I expected — here's why

1. The Nintendo Switch is remarkably fast, which is more important than you'd think.

Sleep Mode turns the Switch into a game console that's quickly accessible.

A major reason people are inclined to play games on their phones is ease of use. A phone is already in your pocket, and you're likely to get into and out of a game quickly. The Switch takes this concept to heart with Sleep Mode, which enables the console to operate like, say, a laptop or a tablet.

Rather than turning the console all the way off, you can simply enter Sleep Mode: a low-power mode that enables the console to be quickly accessed once again, comparable to reopening a laptop screen. No restarting the game — you're back exactly where you left off.

In this respect, the Switch feels delightfully modern. Though comparable functions exist on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Switch pulls it off much faster.

Even if you do have to shut down a game or the console itself, it restarts tremendously quickly.

I've been taking a ton of screenshots on the Switch, mostly for work, and getting them off the Switch requires removing the microSD card I have inserted. And every time I remove the microSD card, I have to power the Switch all the way down. Bummer!

Thankfully, restarting the Switch — even from a cold boot, as it's known — is remarkably quick. I just tested: It takes roughly 10 seconds from all the way off to the main menu. I'd bet any amount of money that it's faster than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

airplane seat

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Legroom varies on major airlines.
  • JetBlue has the most legroom, with 34 inches of space.
  • Spirit has the least, with only 28 inches.

You can essentially forget bringing on a free carry on, you know food will cost an arm and a leg (if there is any at all), and it's a safe bet that you'll have a screaming child within five rows of your seat.

Most of the time, anything to do with plane travel seems out of your control, which is what makes flying such a stressful experience.

However, one thing you can control, sort of, is how much legroom you get — depending on which airline you choose to book with.

The infographic below, uploaded onto Reddit by user AvadaKedavra03, outlines major airlines' amount of legroom in inches.

JetBlue, which promises "the most legroom in coach," actually lives up to that promise with 34 inches of legroom. Spirit on the other hand, which often finds itself last in domestic airline rankings, only has 28 inches.

Keep scrolling to see how much legroom you get on 7 of the most popular airlines.

JetBlue has a spacious 34 inches.

Virgin America and Southwest both have a respectable 32 inches.

Delta and American have 31 inches of space.

“Only the paranoid survive.” — Andy Grove

Andy Grove was a Hungarian refugee who escaped communism, studied engineering, and ultimately led the personal computer revolution as the CEO of Intel. He died earlier this year in Silicon Valley after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease.

When one of the most powerful people in the world encourages us to be paranoid, maybe we should listen.

And Grove isn’t the only powerful person urging caution. Even the director of the FBI — the same official who recently paid hackers a million dollars to unlock a shooter’s iPhone — is encouraging everyone to cover their webcams.

But you obey the law. What do you have to worry about? As the motto of the United Kingdom’s surveillance program reminds us, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear.”

Well, law-abiding citizens do have reason to fear. They do have reasons to secure their devices, their files, and their communications with loved ones.

“If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged.” — Cardinal Richelieu in 1641

In this article, I will show you how you can protect yourself by leveraging state-of-the-art encryption. In a single sitting, you can make great strides toward securing your privacy.

Common sense security for everyone

To be clear, everything I recommend here is 100% free and 100% legal. If you bother locking your doors at night, you should bother using encryption.

“Be prepared” — The Scout Motto

Let’s get prepared.

First, a couple definitions. When I use the term “attacker” I mean anyone trying to access your data whom you haven’t given express permission to — whether it’s a hacker, a corporation, or even a government.

And when I use the terms “private” or “secure”, I mean reasonably so. The reality is that — as long as humans are involved — no system will ever be 100% private or 100% secure.

As long as your phone, computers, and accounts are sufficiently protected, their contents will remain an “encrypted lump” and there’s not much anyone — regardless of how powerful they are — can do about it.

1. Use two-factor authentication on your inbox

Your inbox is the skeleton key to your life. If an attacker compromises it, they can not only read your emails, they can use it to reset your passwords for pretty much anything. This includes social media accounts and even bank accounts.

The simplest thing you can do to dramatically improve your personal security is to turn on two-factor authentication on your inbox.

Basically, two-factor authentication is a second layer of security when signing in. It usually involves receiving a text message with a special code whenever you sign into your account.

Two-factor authentication substantially reduces the likelihood of your inbox getting hacked.

If you use Gmail, you should activate two-factor auth here.

Now.

Seriously.

I’ll still be here when you get back.

2. Encrypt your hard drive

Both Windows and MacOS have built-in full-disk encryption. You just need to turn it on.

These are the 18 most popular YouTube stars in the world — and some are making millions

Last month PewDiePie, the world's most successful YouTube star, lost deals with Disney and YouTube after The Wall Street Journal reported about anti-Semitic jokes in his videos.

But PewDiePie, who has over 54 million YouTube subscribers, and made $15 million in 2016, didn't go silent. Instead, after apologizing for a joke he said went too far, PewDiePie gave the middle finger to the Journal in an explosive video.

Since then, PewDiePie's subscriber count has only grown, many YouTube stars have rallied around him, and he has said he's excited about the new opportunities he'll have as an independent creator.

This situation illustrates the complicated relationship between YouTube stars, their fans, and established media brands like Disney. Since 2005, YouTube has become the de facto launchpad for the next generation of celebrities. These stars rack up millions of subscribers and have a very direct relationship with fans.

From comedians to gamers to beauty vloggers, YouTubers have generally built their followings outside of the control of media giants, even if they are signing big deals with those companies. And there is power and independence in having that huge fan base.

To get a closer look into which stars rule YouTube, we looked at the SocialBlade rankings to see who had the most subscribers. We only focused on independent YouTube stars, disregarding YouTube channels like mainstream music artists.

Here is the new generation of superstars.

Nina Godlewski, Harrison Jacobs, and Maya Kosoff contributed to an earlier version of this post.

An increasing number of Americans, ranging from Silicon Valley billionaires to Trump-fearing liberals, are preparing for doomsday.

For some, self-reliance is a philosophy for everyday life. They grow their own food, fortify their homes against attack, and learn firearm safety. It's about providing their families with a level of assurance that they can withstand whatever catastrophe comes their way, whether it's nuclear war, a viral epidemic, or a zombie apocalypse.

In 2012, Reuters photographers set out to capture the daily lives of several US families who consider themselves doomsday preppers. Take a look inside their homes.

I'm a financial planner, and here's what I tell my 30-something clients

$
0

wealthy friends walking new york city

When you’re first getting your financial act together, the advice you’ll get pretty much boils down to:

  • Create a budget
  • Build up emergency savings
  • Pay down debt
  • Contribute enough to your 401(k) to get a company match, and fund a Roth IRA as well if you can

You built up a solid career, got out of debt, started saving for retirement…in short, you’re doing everything right.

Congratulations! You’ve just graduated from Adulthood 101: Surviving the Cereal-For-Dinner Years.

Welcome to Adulthood 201: More money, more problems

Your life is more complicated than it was when you were 22. Now you’re 32, and you might own real estate — or you might be married (or plan to get hitched soon). Perhaps you even have a child (or plan to add to your family in the next few years). And your parents are getting a little older, so you’re preparing to help with their care one day.

Just yesterday, it seems, you were chasing the best happy hour deals. Now, you and your friends chat about the best local school districts. Are you just one bad decision away from wearing Mom Jeans?

Never! (Listen, there’s no excuse for Mom Jeans.) I’d be happy to guide you into the next phase of keeping your financial life healthy. Now that you have some assets, there are many ways to make your money work harder. You have the power to build serious wealth in your 30s and beyond.

SEE ALSO: I'm a financial planner, and here's what I tell high-earning clients who want to enjoy their money while still building wealth

Up the retirement ante

If you’ve been contributing just enough to your 401(k) to get the company match, and fully funding your Roth IRA each year, you are awesome. But I’m going to challenge you to contribute beyond the minimum to get company match.

Look at your take-home pay and subtract necessary monthly expenses. If you have money left over, use some of that to up your 401(k) contributions even more.

Why focus on this account? Boosting contributions works for you in two ways. First, money you contribute to your 401(k) is pre-tax, so the more you contribute, the less you pay in taxes. Second, more money + time + compound interest = your retirement savings growing exponentially faster whenever you contribute more.

Save more aggressively

If you’re right in the sweet spot of earning a good salary and not having too many financial responsibilities yet, now is the time to save aggressively toward your short-term goals. If you know you’re just a few years away from homeownership, wedding planning, and having kids, save more than just the recommended 10% of your salary.

10% of your gross income should serve as a baseline to get you started with saving. But you’re ready to move up to the next level — which means it’s time to up your savings game, too. Now is the time to consider 15% to 20% of your gross income as your new minimum.

If you plan to use this money in the next five years, keep it in a savings account that earns you some interest, but allows you quick access to your cash.

Take stock

If you have money available that you don’t plan to spend for at least five years, consider investing it. If you’ve never bought stocks or funds beyond your retirement accounts before, this can be intimidating. But there are some easy entries into the world of investing.

Start with low-cost index funds or Exchange-traded funds (commonly called ETFs). Funds are a great way to diversify your investments quickly — and not putting all your eggs in one basket is a great strategy for minimizing overall risk.

But don’t go into investing blindly. Keep an eye on fees when you’re picking investments. Look at a fund’s expense ratio, which is a percentage that indicates what fee you’ll pay per $10,000 you invest. There are options out there that will cost you less than $10 per $10,000 invested.

Also look for no-load funds, which don’t charge you a commission when you invest. By sticking to low-fee investments, you can grow your investments without spending a lot to do so.

For many of us, a home is the biggest investment we'll ever make — yet most Americans are clueless about their home's value, including the things that can ruin it.

From unappealing renovations to an unfortunately placed sinkhole, numerous factors can devalue your greatest investment.

We've rounded up 13 threats that could dampen your home's value.

Kathleen Elkins contributed to a previous version of this story.

Sinkhole damage

While there's insurance coverage specifically for sinkhole damage in case your property is hit by one, they still hurt property values.

"It definitely stigmatizes the property," Rob Arnold, a Florida real-estate investor and realtor who has bought and sold more than 30 sinkhole properties in the last five years, told CF13 News. He tells owners of damaged homes to knock 30% off their asking price, plus the cost of any repairs.

City dumps and power plants

When researchers looked at five municipal landfills near residential property in Cleveland, Ohio, they found the stench was enough to drag down property values by 5.5% to 7.3%. Landfills are most hurtful in populated, expensive, residential areas. The effect was basically nonexistent in sparse, rural areas.

Likewise, the University of California at Berkeley found that homes within 2 miles of a power plant drop 3% to 7% in value.

Hoarders or messy neighbors

If your neighbors' homes and yards look sloppy, home shoppers tend to put a lower value on your home.

A nearby property's overgrown yard, peeling paint, and clutter can easily knock 5% to 10% off the sale price of your home, Joe Magdziarz, president of the Appraisal Institute and a real-estate appraiser with 40 years of experience, told MSN Money.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • A new chocolate museum is opening in New York City, at chocolatier Jacques Torres' SoHo store. It's open from March 8.
  • The museum displays artifacts charting the history of chocolate, from cocoa trees in Central America to mass-produced treats.
  • Visitors can sample chocolate, see how truffles are made, and mold chocolate into bars to take home.

Did you know that chocolate was consumed as a drink long before it was eaten? Or that people once inhaled it to get high?

These are just some fascinating anecdotes from chocolate's history, which you can learn about at New York's first chocolate museum.

Choco-Story New York: The Chocolate Museum and Experience opens tomorrow at chocolatier Jacques Torres' SoHo store, and exhibits a display of artifacts and utensils charting the rise of chocolate, from cocoa trees in Central America to solid, mass-produced treats.

There are also tastings, culinary demonstrations, and an opportunity to mold chocolate bars to take home.

The museum is open permanently from Wednesday, March 8.

INSIDER visited the museum for a tour to learn about, make, and eat a lot of chocolate.

This is the entrance to Choco-Story New York, located at Jacques Torres' SoHo store at 350 Hudson Street. The mural was designed by local artists, Torres told journalists on the tour.

Inside, before the tour even begins, visitors are greeted with chocolate truffles — the first of many tastings in the museum.

The first part of the tour is led by chocolate expert Eddy Van Belle, who collaborated with Torres on the museum.

Van Belle amassed his chocolate knowledge from traveling around the world, and has opened four other Choco-Story museums in Belgium, Prague, Paris, and Uxmal, Mexico.

10 habits of people who are always on time

$

waiting for trainFor some people, "early bird gets the worm" is a life motto. To them, "fashionably" late is not a thing.

These people are "on-timers," and they have unique habits that make them who they are.

Seeing as showing up late is disrespectful, and can negatively affect your career as well as your relationships, it may be time to take a page out of their book.

Here are 10 habits that make punctual people tick.

They wake up before their alarm rings

People who are always on time unintentionally set a mental alarm along with a physical one.

There’s a scientific explanation for this: the suprachiasmatic nucleus in our brains that oversees the body’s clock can pick up on daily routines. Since on-timers are likely to follow stricter schedules, their body adjusts to their everyday moves.

They think ahead

For example, on-timers will plan outfits ahead of time, which prevents morning meltdowns. They spend less time staring into their closets and more time focusing on other pressing matters, like breakfast.

They give themselves a time buffer

It doesn’t matter how hard they try, on-timers will always arrive either early or on time. That's because they give themselves a time buffer: if something is 30 minutes away, they don't leave 30 minutes in advance, but 40, or 45 minutes before they need to be there.

They also prepare for unexpected delays.

Nearly a third of the 30 richest billionaires on the recently relaunched Bloomberg Billionaires Index have one major thing in common: They earned their fortunes in technology.

That includes Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who retains his title as the richest man in the world, as well as Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. Though US moguls dominate the world of tech billionaires, China's Jack Ma of Alibaba and Pony Ma of Tencent also earn spots in the top nine.

Tech money proves to be hard-earned as well: All nine of the richest billionaires are self-made, thanks to the powerful companies they built themselves, including Facebook, Microsoft, and Google.

For the ranking, Business Insider culled data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as of March 1, when the index relaunched in its expanded format. The index updates daily to provide up-to-the-minute data on the world's wealthiest men and women. You can read the full methodology here.

Below, read on to see the nine richest billionaires who made their fortunes in tech.

9. Ma Huateng

Net worth:$22.5 billion

Age: 45

Country: China

Industry: Technology

Source of wealth: Self-made; Tencent Holdings

Software engineer Ma Huateng (aka Pony Ma) founded China's largest internet portal, Tencent Holdings, in 1998. He was 26. Ma's company has a number of successful and widely used platforms in its portfolio, including QQ, its instant-messaging service, which is one of the world's 10 largest websites; a mobile-texting service (WeChat) with over 800 million users; a mobile-commerce product (WeChat Wallet); and an online-gaming community (Tencent Games), the largest in China.

Ma's wealth has increased by $4.7 billion in the past year.

8. Steve Ballmer

Net worth:$27 billion

Age: 60

Country: US

Industry: Technology

Source of wealth: Self-made; Microsoft

Steve Ballmer dropped out of business school at Stanford in 1980 to join Harvard friend Bill Gates at Microsoft as the company's first business manager, earning a $50,000 salary and a stake in the company. During his tenure, Ballmer held positions as vice president of marketing, vice president of systems software, and executive vice president of sales and support, and was often referred to as "the numbers guy."

He became CEO of the company in 2000 after Gates stepped down, and he remained in charge of the software giant until Satya Nadella replaced him in 2014. While running Microsoft, the company's revenue grew by 294% and profits by 181% — although its market share was surpassed by Google and Apple during the same period. Still, the early stake Ballmer acquired in the company made him immensely wealthy.

After stepping down as CEO, Ballmer fulfilled his dream of owning an NBA franchise, paying $2 billion in a deal to buy the Los Angeles Clippers, now his main venture.

Ballmer's net worth has increased $4.8 billion in the last year.

7. Jack Ma

Net worth: $35.7 billion

Age: 52

Country: China

Industry: Technology

Source of wealth: Self-made; Alibaba

The richest person in China, Alibaba founder and executive chairman Jack Ma reportedly started China's first internet company in 1988: China Yellowpages. He lost control of that company to a state-owned telecom in 1996 and started Alibaba three years later with just $60,000. Fifteen years after its inception, the e-commerce company broke records with a $25 billion initial public offering— the world's largest ever.

Post-IPO, however, Alibaba's good fortune began to slip. The company's shares dropped 22% in 2015, most likely because of China's slowing economy and concerns over counterfeiters using the company's platform. Ma didn't worry, though. He acknowledged that 2016 would be a trying time for the Chinese economy, but remained confident in Alibaba's long-term success.

Ma's wealth has increased by $8.4 billion over the past year.

Why critics are in love with the spy show 'The Americans' — and you need to watch it

"The Americans," which premieres its fifth season Tuesday night on FX, follows KGB spies living as a married American couple with kids in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., during the early 1980s. The show stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings.

Despite relatively low ratings, the FX drama — which premiered in 2013 — is universally loved by critics and remains on the air. In 2016, the show was nominated for four Emmys including best drama, best actor in a drama, and best actress in a drama. It's an underrated gem.

Last year, FX renewed the show for a fifth and sixth season, with the sixth being its last. (You can watch the first four seasons on Amazon Prime.)

Here are all the reasons you need to watch "The Americans," according to critics:

SEE ALSO: 'Billions' is the hot-button show Wall Street is obsessed with — here's what it's all about

It's based on a real-life Russian spy program.

In 2010, the FBI busted a Russian espionage ring, which resulted in the US kicking out 10 Russian spies who were living in the country under false identities. One couple had two sons who were unaware of their parents' true identities — they thought they were Canadian.

One of the showrunners is a former CIA agent.

Showrunner and cocreator Joe Weisberg is a former CIA agent, having worked for the agency in the early '90s. Because of this, the CIA has to approve all of the scripts to ensure that the show doesn't reveal any classified information.

It follows a historical period that isn't often covered in movies and TV.

The front lines of the Cold War and the early '80s in particular are not saturated in film and television. It was a time rich in music, but not fashion.

"It's a subtle, complex portrait of a relationship etched into an engaging espionage thriller set in 1981."—The New York Times
