indiarose1

The Sunday Times' annual list of the wealthy people in Britain, which lists the 1,000 wealthiest individuals and families in the UK, ranked the 50 richest people aged 30 and under.

While the older generation generate their vast wealth through inheritance, commodities, working in the City, as well as in the tech world, a bulk of the richest young people of Britain mainly grew their wealth from the entertainment and sports world.

There are also some tech success stories and there is even a couple who won the lottery near the top of the list.

We took a look at the top 19 spots this year below.

T=15. Sergio Aguero: Net worth — £40 million ($51.92 million). The 28-year-old joined Manchester City in 2011. His current contract is worth £200,000 a week with additional bonuses.

T=15. Niall Horan: Net worth — £40 million ($51.92 million). He is one of the four members of band One Direction and he released his first solo single last October,

T=15. Liam Payne: Net worth — £40 million ($51.92 million). While One Direction is on a hiatus, the 23-year-old will release his first solo album after signing a recording deal with Capitol Records.

The 31 richest women in Britain

ecclestone1

Most of Britain's richest women derived their wealth through inheritance and marriage.

However, some of the 20 female billionaires and dozens of female multi-millionaires, racked up their riches founding their own companies or being successful in their own right, according to the Sunday Times' 2017 Rich List published this week.

For example, Bet365 founder Denise Coates racked up an enormous fortune from a gambling empire she created. She is the 22nd richest person in Britain and 5th richest woman in UK with a net worth of £5 billion.

But there are very few that can claim to be truly self-made.

Business Insider decided to take a quick look to see who made the top spots.

31. Lady de Rothschild: Net worth — £675 million ($875.5 million). Lynn de Rothschild owns EL Rothschild, a family investment operation, with husband Evelyn de Rothschild, and can thank him for most of her wealth.

30. May Makhzoumi: Net worth — £700 million ($908.02 million). The wife of Lebanese industrialist Fouad Makhzou gets most of her wealth from her husband. He founded Dubai-based company Future Pipe which makes fibreglass pipes for large infrastructure projects.

29. Ruth Parasol: Net worth — £720 million ($934.03 million). Gibraltar-based Parasol and her former husband Russ DeLeon derived their joint fortune through the launch of Starluck Casino and Partygaming. Partygaming is the parent company of PartyPoker.com.

All the bombshell developments in the Trump-Russia controversy that has led to congressional investigations

donald TRUMP

During the 2016 presidential election, the Russian government, directed by President Vladimir Putin, waged an "influence campaign" aimed at undermining Hillary Clinton's candidacy and aiding Donald Trump, according to a report by US intelligence agencies.

The campaign included cyber attacks on US political organizations, including the Democratic National Committee, with the intent to damage the reputation of the Democratic Party, the Clinton campaign, and the democratic process.

Following reports that some of Trump's campaign associates had contacts with Russian officials during the campaign, the FBI announced that it is investigating whether Trump campaign members colluded with the Russian government to influence the election as part of its broader investigation into Russian interference in the election. The House and Senate intelligence committees are also investigating Russian influence on the election.

And on Monday, a Senate Judiciary subcommittee is holding a hearing on Russian interference in the election. Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates is expected to confirm that she warned the White House in January about former national security adviser Michael Flynn's contact with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

Here is a timeline of all of the major events in the relationship between Trump, his associates, and Russia.

2008: Donald Trump Jr. tells a reporter of the Trump Organization, "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets" and "we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia."

November 2013: Trump visits Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant. Upon his return, he tweets: "Moscow is a very interesting and amazing place! U.S. MUST BE VERY SMART AND VERY STRATEGIC.”

September 2015: An FBI agent tells the Democratic National Committee that its computer network had been hacked by a cyberespionage group associated with the Russian government. The DNC contractor who takes the call isn't sure the caller is actually an FBI agent and doesn't take the concerns very seriously. It takes another seven months for knowledge of the hacking to reach the highest levels of the DNC.

How to play '22 Seconds,' the addicting new game from the creators of 'Ballz'

Your newest addiction is here in the form of 22 Seconds, an infuriating new iPhone game.

Made by Ketchapp Games, the controversial company behind "2048" and "Ballz," 22 Seconds is incredibly simple. So simple, in fact, that you'll immediately be embarrassed you're not better at it.

The game is a lot like Pinball, in that you have to send a ball down a path, avoiding obstacles along the way. But like the name suggests, you only have 22 seconds to get as far as you can.

Here's how to play.

SEE ALSO: This game is No. 1 in the App Store for a reason — it's crazy addictive, and totally free

"22 Seconds" is played by swiping on your phone screen. As soon as you make your first move, the countdown begins.

You move your ball forward by swiping from the bottom toward the top. But it's not as easy as it sounds — in fact, Ketchapp describes "22 Seconds" as "easy to learn, hard to master."

The timer will flash on the screen, which makes things a bit stressful. There are also walls and moving obstacles in the way, which will slow you down.

9 ways to get better sleep in hotels

$
0
0

RS868_DSC_8798_HDR2 nihiwatu indonesia best hotelThe INSIDER Summary:

  • We're biologically wired to stay alert in new environments.
  • Pack your pillowcase from home to trick your mind just before you fall asleep.
  • Set the temperature to a cool 60-67 degrees. It's the temperature that naturally fosters sleep.

It’s a cruel paradox that right when you need sleep the most -- when you’re jet lagged or weary from a day of sightseeing -- is exactly when it proves to be so illusive. In a hotel, you snap to attention with every hallway murmur, passing car, and rumble of the elevator. And what was that whirring noise? Is that the air-conditioning switching off? Or are your neighbors actually making pina coladas in their room?

How do you put these thoughts -- and yourself -- to bed?

The truth is, we’re biologically wired to stay on alert in new environments, something called the “first night effect.” That defense mechanism makes getting a solid eight hours of shut-eye in a hotel room rather tricky. But these nine tips will give you the best shot at waking up refreshed and ready to explore.

1. Choose your room wisely.

There are plenty of important factors to consider when selecting a hotel room: space, views, or even monogrammed bathrobes, if that’s your thing. But light sleepers should focus on three things: location, location, location. Where your room is located accounts for a lot of the noise it may pick up. As a rule, rooms on higher floor facing the rear or interior of the building will get the least amount of street-level noise. Also request a room away from the elevator and the ice machine, both create a clamor on their own, and they can be gathering points for people to chat late into the night. Another thing to avoid is rooms facing the pool; those summery views can also come with loud splashing around at all hours.

2. Keep it fresh and cool.

Stuffy rooms are sleepy-time kryptonite. Once you’ve set your bags down, get the air moving in your room. Fling open your windows or switch on the fan. When you get closer to bedtime, switch on the air-conditioning and turn down the temps to something between 60 to 67 degrees. It may feel a little chilly when you’re not under the covers, but according to the National Sleep Foundation, that’s the temperature that naturally fosters sleep. Your body temperature drops when you’re falling asleep, and dialing down the thermostat can kick off that cycle.

3. B.Y.O. earplugs.

Selecting a room away from noise is a good start, but frankly there’s no location that can solve the problem of thin walls. A good, cheap pair of earplugs should be your first line of defense, and really there’s no excuse not to pack them: They’re practically weightless, totally inexpensive, and take up less room in your luggage than travel-sized sunscreen. And don’t assume you’ll get a set from the airline or hotel. Far better to B.Y.O. and be sure.

10 things people don't talk about in business — but should

$

Grace Bonney Design Sponge

As I head into my 12th year of blogging and business at Design*Sponge, I find myself craving more “real talk” in business.

I want to hear from people about when things didn’t go as planned, or when they found themselves up against an unexpected challenge. I want to know about the nitty-gritty and the times they fell down and what they learned from it all. I learn best from my own failures and have always shared them here in hopes that others can learn from them (or avoid them altogether).

But being vulnerable isn’t easy, and it’s not something that comes naturally to most of us, especially when the current online trend is to present a nearly perfect facade of branding and business. But we all know that at the end of the day, we’re all real people and we all make mistakes and there are topics that even the boldest of business gurus don’t want to tackle publicly.

So today I want to talk about what some of those are for me — the things I’m uncomfortable talking about and the topics no one wants to touch with a 10-foot pole. Things like firing people, working with friends, dealing with money and how to know when to walk away. Those aren’t things that have a one-size-fits-all answer, but they’re topics that get easier (and feel more universal) when we share them openly.

I’m going to go into more detail about all of these in future posts, but today I’m sharing 10 of the biggest issues I’ve faced in business that I wish people talked about more.

SEE ALSO: After 13 years of running my company, I've changed my mind in 5 key ways

Hiring is as important as firing (and both are hard):

The topic I’m always most afraid of, more than money or taxes or competition, is dealing with hiring and firing.

First, hiring anyone is a huge deal. Not only are you committing to paying someone for a set amount of time, but you’re signing up for managing them and both setting expectations and holding someone to them. And when those two things don’t go well, you may find yourself in the situation where hiring turns into firing. I have never fired anyone and felt good about how it went.

A huge part of that is my struggle to speak up clearly when warning signs pop up. I try to assume the best of people and have, in the past, been prone to both avoiding difficult discussions and letting people walk over me. I want to run a business where the boss is compassionate and understanding, but I also know that worrying about that too much has led me down a path of very difficult situations that end with negative financial impacts.

What do I wish I knew earlier? It’s simple: I wish I had remembered that as soon as you hire someone, you sign yourself up for the possibility of having to fire them. So you need to imagine both and get a good contract in place to deal with both. Speaking of which…

Tough contracts are your best friend:

I just made a huge mistake this summer with contracts, proving that after 12 years, I still haven’t quite learned from all the earlier blunders I’ve made by not reading, or writing, contracts closely enough. I have lamented spending a lot of money on lawyers for contracts but when things get sticky, boy am I glad that I did.

Like good fences, good contracts make for good working relationships (or neighbors, in the case of fences). Defining clearly what each party expects from the working relationship, and in return, is absolutely a necessity. Sure, handshake deals work out sometimes, but when they don’t, they can end badly — in a way that could have been avoided.

So always (always) take the time to make a contract you feel comfortable with, that both parties understand, and that has a clear “out” clause you both agree to.

What do I wish I knew earlier? To speak up and be patient when a part of a contract makes me uncomfortable. That has always come back to haunt me, so when you feel nervous about something, listen to your gut and consult a lawyer.

Being friends with employees is a challenge (and it’s okay not to be):

One of the greatest joys of my life has been working alongside some of the most incredible people in our community. From full-time editors to part-time writers to our incredible in-house advertising/business team, the people I spend most of my day talking to online are the people I often feel the closest to.

But that can be a tricky line to walk. I’ve made the mistake before of letting personal issues cloud my business judgment (and the other way around) and it was a hard reminder that boundaries have to be set.

There will always be a part of me that believes there are exceptions to this rule (I consider some of our long-term team members to be my family and that will never change), but overall, it’s been hard for me to remember that as much as I want to be BFFs with all the amazing people we work with, sometimes you have to be the boss and that comes with decisions that won’t make people “like” you. And that’s okay.

What do I wish I knew earlier? You can’t make everyone like you. But you can treat everyone with respect and care. The latter won’t ensure the former, but it will ensure that you feel good about the working experience your team members have.

With its many gleaming rows of beauty products, Sephora is a makeup lover's heaven.

But it can also be a nightmare — with so many options, it's hard to know what's really worth spending money on.

To narrow down the beauty chain's must-have products, INSIDER asked employees of its biggest US store on New York City's 34th Street, as well as Sephora Collection's national makeup artist, for the single item they can't stop wearing.

The staff members we spoke with, including cashiers and makeup artists, recommended everything from a $6 sheet mask to a $95 beauty oil made with real gold.

Here's what they're obsessing over right now.

Sephora Collection - 10 HR Wear Perfection Foundation

Cost: $20

Sephora employee Kayon told INSIDER she wears this $20 foundation every day. "It's lightweight, smooths over fine lines, and adjusts to my skin tone," she said.

Tom Ford - Soleil Lip Foil

Cost: $53

Makeup artist Helen V. wears this foil lipstick in Seadragon whenever she wants to achieve a glam "metallic look." She said it's made of three different types of oil, which keeps her lips hydrated, too.

Here's what $1 million worth of Ford GT supercars looks like (F)

Ford GT Drive

The new Ford GT is a supercar that, in competition form, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in France in 2016, repeating history from 1966, when a much earlier Ford GT went 1-2-3.

Ford invited the media to get up-close-and-personal with the production GT, of which only 250 will be built this year. In total, 1,000 supercars will be delivered over four years.

The GT starts at $400,000, but I have it on good authority that once the optioning process in finished some owners could be writing a $500,000 check.

Ford brought about $2.5 million worth of GT's, six vehicles, to Utah for us to check out. But only three cars, which together totaled about $1.2 million, were allowed on the track at a time.

Needless to say, the cars looked stunning.

SEE ALSO: We got up close and personal with Ford's $400,000 GT supercar

Ford brought six GT production vehicles, in various paint jobs, to Utah. Oh, and the 1966 Le Mans GT40 race car — the number 1 car that Ken Miles and Denny Hulme drove to a second-place finish in Ford's 1-2-3 podium sweep in 1966.

Scissor doors, we salute you.

We were initially allowed a nice, slow drive in formation around one of the two tracks at Utah Motorsports, home to Ford's Performance Racing School.

The Insider Pick:

  • We’ve reviewed all of the best dog leashes on the market, and our top pick is the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash. This leash is constructed from durable but lightweight nylon to handle dogs of all sizes.

Daily exercise is extremely important for a dog, and having a high-quality leash is the best way to make sure that your walk goes smoothly. When it comes to choosing a dog leash for your pup, there are a number of factors to consider. The length, thickness, and weight of the leash you choose will depend on your dog’s size and strength.

Smaller dogs should have smaller leashes, while larger dogs need something sturdier. There are also dog leashes that offer specific benefits to prevent your dog from pulling on the leash or to give him some gentle correction as he learns proper leash etiquette.

Because there are so many different leashes to choose from, it can be difficult to make the right choice – especially if you don’t know what to look for. That’s why we’ve done the work for you in researching the best dog leashes on the market, and we’ve come up with a list of our top five picks. Below, you will find our top picks for the best dog leashes in different categories based on design, construction, and user reviews.

Although the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the PetSafe Nylon Leash, Leashboss Original Double Handle Leash, TaoTronics Retractable Dog Leash, and the Logical Leather Training Leash.

When choosing a dog leash for everyday use, you want something that is both durable and comfortable. Constructed from heavy-duty nylon, the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash can stand up to even the strongest pullers, and the padded neoprene handle won’t tear up your hands.

Not only is nylon one of the most durable materials for dog leashes, but it is also lightweight and inexpensive, making this leash an affordable choice as well. The leash is 1-inch wide, 2mm thick, and comes in 4-foot and 6-foot lengths as well as four different colors: black, blue, pink, and red.

Rated among the top ten leashes of 2017 by She Knows, the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash offers the ideal combination of durability and comfort. The nylon leash material is strong, but the handle is padded with neoprene to make it gentle on your hands. Even FakeSpot.com had trouble finding any problems with this leash, and user reviews on Amazon are overwhelmingly positive.

In addition to being made from durable materials, the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash features reflective stitching to improve visibility during nighttime walks. It also includes a heavy-duty metal clasp and a D-ring near the handle to clip on additional accessories like a carrier for poop bags.

Priced at $14.99, the Max and Neo Reflective Nylon Leash is the perfect choice for an everyday dog leash and, because it is covered by a lifetime warranty, you’ll never have to go without it.

Pros: Lightweight but durable, padded neoprene handle, reflective stitching for nighttime visibility, heavy-duty metal clasp, comes in 4ft or 6ft length, covered by a lifetime warranty

Cons: Not as long as some leashes, may not be durable for dogs over 100 pounds

Simply put, if you want a leash that gets the job done without breaking the bank, this is it.

The PetSafe Nylon Leash features a classic design, and it doesn’t boast any special features, but that is exactly what makes it the perfect choice. This leash is easy to clip and unclip, lightweight and comfortable for daily use, and it comes in several different widths and lengths so you can choose the option that is best for your dog.

Not only does this leash have more than 600 positive reviews on Amazon, but it is also recommended by pet product review sites like My Pet Needs That.

The best leash for large dogs and dogs that pull

Why you'll love it: The Leashboss Original Double Handle Leash gives you the ultimate degree of control over large-breed dogs and dogs that pull with its heavy-duty construction and dual handle design.

Large-breed dogs require a leash that is strong enough to stand up to some heavy pulling. The leash not only has to be made from durable materials, but it should also have a design that actually prevents the dog from pulling. The Leashboss Original Double Handle Leash offers this unique combination of features, giving you the ultimate degree of control over your dog, while also protecting you against pulling and tugging.

Purposefully made with a 5-foot length, this leash is neither too long nor too short for large-breed dogs. The shorter length helps to keep you in control, even with the biggest and strongest of dogs.

This leash is constructed from heavy-duty nylon materials with non-bending traffic handles and a strong metal clasp. One handle is located at the end of the leash while the other is placed 18 inches from the clip. Use the handle at the end to give your dog more freedom or grab both handles to take control.

Not only does the Leashboss Original Double Handle Leash have more than 300 positive reviews on Amazon, but pet product review sites like Stop That Dog approve of the leash as well.

The best feature this leash has to offer is its dual handle design, which gives you a degree of control over your dog that no other leash can offer. When you can take a firm grip on two handles you don’t have to worry about being bowled over by a large dog, even when he pulls against the leash.

Though the Leashboss Original Double Handle Leash may not be the cheapest leash on the market at $27.98, it is well worth the price if you’re looking for a heavy-duty leash designed specifically for large dogs and dogs that pull.

Pros: Heavy-duty construction, comfort grip handles, dual handle design, 5-foot length ideal for large dogs, covered by 5-year satisfaction guarantee

Cons: Somewhat expensive, shorter length limits the dog’s freedom

13 things restaurant hosts wish you would stop doing

woman on phone at restaurant

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Being a hostess requires being able to deal with some impatient and rude guests.
  • Make sure to arrive with your completed party on time.
  • Just because a restaurant is empty doesn't mean any table is available for you.
  • Don't use a birthday as bait to get a table faster without a reservation because it won't work.

Working in any service industry position can be difficult, as customer’s expectations can occasionally be high and unattainable. After working as a hostess in a busy restaurant for a summer job, I learned that people will ask just about anything to get the exact table they want, faster. Often, however, these demands are not within the hostess's control or they’re just rude. If you like going to popular restaurants that may have wait times, here are some sayings to watch out for:

1. "You could move that table over here and then push these three tables together…"

Stop trying to play Tetris with the restaurant tables. They’re often spaced the way they are for fire safety reasons, server movability and to have the correct number of large and small tables. Additionally, moving them is the hostess’s job, not yours.

2. "We’re actually a party of 9 so we’ll just add this table too."

If you told the hostess you’re a party of 3, he or she is going to find you a table for 3. Your party should not triple after you’ve been seated because this creates problems for both the servers and other people waiting for tables.

3. "The rest will be here soon."

If it’s an hour later and "the rest” of your party has not arrived, you’ve actually taken money and time from the restaurant. Looking at a table for 15 with 4 people seated ordering just drinks and appetizers will make the restaurant staff (and especially customers still waiting) angry.

12 small lifestyle habits you can adopt to save more money

$

woman smiling thinking couple

If you're constantly wondering where your money is going, consider how much your daily habits are costing you.

Do you drop $10 to $15 on fast-casual lunches every day? Are you quick to buy something you don't actually need? Do you make purchases to keep up with the same level of luxury your friends enjoy?

These seemingly small habits, and many more, could be keeping you from saving hundreds, even thousands, of dollars a year.

We turned to the Quora threads, "What habit has saved you the largest amount of money?" and "What are some lifestyle changes that save money?" to round up the best — and easiest — ways people save money every day.

Learn the difference between saving a dollar and saving a percentage.

Quora user Jaap Weel writes:

"Remember that saving 5% on a $10,000 item is not at all like saving 5% on a $10 item. But in order to process decision problems at different scales, the brain tends to normalize things so the two cases appear similar.

"Ever since I studied behavioral economics, I started spending less time worrying about saving 20 cents on spaghetti, but I spent a lot of time thinking about what car to buy and making sure I got a good deal on it. You can buy a lot of spaghetti for a $4k discount on a car, and yet I see people who spend lots of time on grocery coupon clipping but never stop to consider whether they could move to a cheaper apartment, drive a cheaper car, etc."

Do-it-yourself.

Quora user Betsy Megas writes:

"I enjoy the challenge of learning new skills and the satisfaction of accomplishing tasks. Among the things I've gotten pretty good at: basic plumbing, interior painting, sewing, bike maintenance, baking, cooking. I'm still working on gardening, and I think I'd like to learn and improve basic construction skills (I'd like to build a deck or patio and repair some fences) and maybe learn about building PCs. Here again, I see it as both entertainment and expense avoidance. Occasionally also exercise."

Practice delayed gratification.

Quora user Angela Recruiter writes:

"When you are shopping and your heart leaps at the sight of xyz product, and you think it's love at first sight...WAIT.  Save it, bookmark it.  Come back to it hours later, then a day later, then days later and gauge, each time, how or whether your level of "pumpity-pump" interests stays the same, declines, etc. Never buy on impulse. Sleep on it. Ask yourself: Do you think it'll make you happy a month from its purchase? A few months? A year? Years?"

Everything we know about In-N-Out's reclusive 35-year-old president who just became one of the youngest billionaires in America

Lynsi Snyder

Thirty-five-year-old Lynsi Snyder became one of the youngest billionaires in the US this week, after inheriting full control of the burger chain In-N-Out.

Snyder inherited 50% of In-N-Out's shares when she turned 30, and on Friday — her 35th birthday — she acquired most of the chain's remaining shares.

The inheritance makes her one of the youngest female billionaires in the country.

The famously reclusive heiress has been married four times and suffered through a spate of family tragedies, including the death of her father when she was just 17 years old.

Snyder has only spoken to the media a handful of times over the past decade. Here's what we know about her life.

Snyder's grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder, opened the first In-N-Out restaurant in 1948.

After her grandfather died in 1976, Snyder's uncle, Rich Snyder, took over the company. He was at the helm until 1993, when he died in a plane crash.

Snyder's father, Guy Snyder, then replaced his brother and remained in charge until 1999, when he died of a prescription-drug overdose. Lynsi Snyder was 17 at the time.

Forget the $1,900 Retro iPhone 7, here's how to give your iPhone 7 a glowing Apple logo

iphone 7 glowing logo

There's a DIY kit you can buy that will give your iPhone 7 a glowing Apple logo on the back, and it looks amazing with the black iPhone 7.

It looks like a modern take on the $1,900 Retro iPhone 7 from Colorware, which has an old-school design complete with the original rainbow-colored Apple logo, but this lighting kit costs a fraction of the price.

You can buy the lighting kit from tech site TheUnlockr. It's $30 for the iPhone 7 kit, and $33 for the iPhone 7 Plus

One important note before buying: David Cogen from TheUnlockr does warn that going through with the procedure will void your warranty, so don't expect Apple to repair your iPhone 7 if you break it. He also mentioned that it removes the iPhone 7's water resistance, but it'll still survive the occasional splash like most phones.

What effect does it have on battery life? Cogen told me that he left the customized iPhone 7 on for a few days without much effect on battery life, and that it died at "the same time it always did," but results may vary.

Here's how to install the light kit:

SEE ALSO: You can modify your iPhone's logo so it glows like the one on your MacBook

You'll need to buy the iPhone 7 Light Kit from TheUnlockr.

The kit comes with all the necessary tools for the procedure.

First, you'll need to unscrew the iPhone 7's pentalobe screws found at the bottom of the phone.
