5 reasons you haven't been successful with your diet

$

cookingThe INSIDER Summary:

  • When it comes to one's relationship with health and dieting, there are a lot of factors involved.
  • Factors like mindset, willpower, and routine can make or break how successful you are in maintaining a healthy diet.

As a high-performance diet coach and lifestyle designer, I work with dozens of entrepreneurs, executives, and badass human beings who battle their health on a daily basis to achieve a nearly impossible standard of success.

I coach my clients to create lifestyles for themselves in which they’ve taken willpower and decision-making out of the equation. By being strategic and planning proactively for your food options throughout the day,  you won’t ever have to rely on willpower to get you by. Which cuts down on the stress eating, late night bingeing, and feeling out of control.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and still can’t lose weight, here are 5 bits to chew on that I hope will influence the way you think about your relationship to “health” and “dieting” and, ultimately, yourself.

1. The biggest mistake people make when trying to get healthy or lose weight

People love to get excited about the latest science on macro and micronutrients or the latest exercise craze, but completely ignore the importance of psychology in health. This is a mistake because 9.5/10 times (literally) this results in a rebound and actually makes you more likely to gain weight in the future. Psychology is the difference between short-term success with ultimate failure and real long-term health. The key is focusing on a growth mindset and habit building rather than on self-control and willpower.

2. The key difference between success and failure is enjoyment

The fundamental flaw with the approach of both the dieting and medical industries is the focus on willpower/restriction, the mantra "no pain, no gain." We tend to internalize this message and it makes sense for a few reasons. First, a lot of goals (specifically short-term goals) can actually be achieved through willpower alone. And second, with health/dieting short-term success can be quick and often impressive using this method. But it is a false siren, because willpower is unreliable long-term.

Instead we need to focus on habits, which do not require willpower once formed (some willpower may be necessary to form the habit at the beginning). Habits are automatic actions that can be engineered into our lives, and building a set of critical health habits is the secret to long-term success. The beautiful irony is that habits only form in the presence of an intrinsic reward. Think runner’s high, not fitting into your favorite outfit. This means you need to like the foods you eat and enjoy your physical activities rather than choke down steamed broccoli and torturing yourself with interval training. This is GREAT news, because dieting sucks.

3. How to build a habit

Habit building is easy to explain but harder to do. There is a lot of subtle psychological factors at play. First, don't start with things you think you *should* do. Stop moralizing your choices now, it makes this whole thing harder. Instead try to find one or two health habits you actually enjoy. It doesn't matter what they are, you'll add more later.

Every habit has a trigger, routine and reward.

  • The trigger is what subconsciously reminds your brain to do the action.
  • The routine is the health behavior.
  • The reward is what reinforces/strengthens the trigger so your brain wants to take the same action again.

It's perfectly OK to start with a small action - e.g. walking around the block. The goal at the beginning is to form the habit. You can grow it once the triggers and rewards are in place.

A common error is to not start or do something because you think it isn't significant enough or "won't count." This is a mistake. In fact, easier habits are easier to form so can be preferable in many situations. The idea is to train your confidence that you CAN do these things. The doing is the key. What may seem trivial at first actually feels pretty damn good, you find. Which increases the likelihood of adding more to your routine. Now you’re making that decision from an informed and empowered place. That’s what success looks like.

The trial for the police officer charged in the shooting death of Philando Castile began today — here's what we know so far

jeronimo yanez police officer philando castile

Jury selection began Tuesday for the trial of Jeronimo Yanez, the St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer charged in last July's fatal shooting of 32-year-old Philando Castile.

Yanez, 29, is charged with second-degree manslaughter and two counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm.

The case is being heard in the Ramsey County District Court in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, and the court is expected to take several days to narrow the pool of 50 prospective jurors. One woman has already been dismissed from the jury pool after it was determined she was related to Yanez.

According to the Pioneer Press, the jury pool contains "a handful of people of color," and a little more than half are men.

A friend and former colleague of Castile who attended court on Tuesday told the Pioneer Press he wished the jury pool was "a little more diverse," but he still believed they can be fair.

Here's what you need to know:

SEE ALSO: The Cleveland police officer who shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice has been fired

What we know about the shooting

Yanez shot Castile on July 6, 2016, during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, a suburb of Minnesota.

Castile's death immediately drew national attention, as Castile's girlfriend Diamond Reynolds had livestreamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook, where it quickly went viral.

In the video, which also features Reynold's then-four-year-old daughter in the backseat, Reynolds can be heard calmly speaking to Yanez and describing the events that had unfolded.

Reynolds says in the video that they had been pulled over due to a busted tail light, at which point Castile informed Yanez he had a firearm and was reaching for his wallet when Yanez opened fire.

In the video, Yanez can be heard shouting expletives and yelling, "I told him not to reach for it," as Reynolds responds, "You told him to get his ID, sir. His driver's license."

Reynolds is expected to testify at trial. Prosecutors have said that in addition to her' Facebook Live video of the shooting's aftermath, footage taken from the police cruiser also captured video and audio of the incident and its aftermath. It is expected to be played for the first time in public at the trial, according to the Pioneer Press.

The first day of Yanez's trial

Two of the issues already in contention are Castile's marijuana use on the day he was fatally shot, and whether his permit to carry a gun was obtained legally.

Yanez's defense attorney Earl Gray argued in a motion that all references to Castile's permit should be struck from the transcripts jurors will be provided with, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Reynolds had referred to Castile's permit three times on video taken during and after the incident.

Gray reportedly said the inclusion of such references would be "opening the door" to whether the defense could argue that Castile had lied about using marijuana on his application for the permit. One of the prosecutors, Jeffrey Paulsen, argued that any inaccuracy on the application, which was submitted in 2015, was irrelevant as it was not known to Yanez at the time of the incident.

The dispute is expected to be more fully resolved Wednesday, although Judge William Leary proposed that Reynolds' references to the permit be omitted from the trial and the jury instructed not to wonder whether Castile had a permit.

Leary also granted a motion from the defense to question Reynolds on the stand about a marijuana purchase she and Castile had reportedly made just hours before the shooting, although he did not compel prosecutors to re-interview her.

Reynolds has said the pair did not smoke it in Castile's car, and Castile did not ingest any on the day of the shooting. Toxicology tests turned up some THC in his blood, but prosecutors have argued that its presence does not prove Castile smoked it that same day.

What we know about Yanez

Yanez, who is 29 years old and Latino, has worked for the St. Anthony Police Department since 2011.

He is believed to be the first police officer in Minnesota to be charged with killing a civilian, according to the Star Tribune. His defense attorneys have maintained that he shot Castile in self-defense.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, have emphasized that Castile was not resisting or fleeing when Yanez shot him.

"No reasonable officer, knowing, seeing and hearing what Officer Yanez did at the time would've used deadly force under these circumstances," Ramsey County Attorney John Choi told media. "There simply was no objective threat posted to Officer Yanez."

Some policing experts have raised questions around law enforcement seminars Yanez attended, including one called "The Bulletproof Warrior" conducted by private company Calibre Press. The seminar has been criticized for fostering paranoia among officers, although the firm says the course is actually designed to save lives.

7 things you should never wear to a wedding

bride wedding guests

Of the many ways guests can ruin a wedding, showing up in a white dress ranks high on the list. But this surprisingly common mistake isn't the only fashion faux pas wedding guests are making.

With the start of wedding season here, INSIDER spoke to New York City-based planner Amy Shey Jacobs of Chandelier Events to find out exactly what guests should avoid wearing.

Here are the worst things you could possibly wear.

A white dress

Despite it being a common tradition for the bride to wear white on her wedding day, some guests really do turn up to weddings in white dresses.

Other bridal colors and styles of dresses are also out of the question.

"If it could be a wedding dress, it shouldn't be on your body unless you're the bride," Jacobs told INSIDER. "Avoid anything white. Same goes for creme, light beige, off white, eggshell... and especially white lace."

There's only one exception to this rule: You can wear it only if the bride has explicitly said guests can wear white. In Jacobs' words, "if you are told to wear white (like to a snowball affair or white party), wear it!"

The same color as the bridesmaids

Dressing like the bride is one problem; dressing like a bridesmaid is another.

"If you actually know what the bridesmaids are wearing, and YOU'RE not a bridesmaid, try to avoid looking like a member of the bridal party," Jacobs said. "Don't overthink it, and certainly don't bother the bride, but if you're sure that the bridesmaids are all wearing pink chiffon, maybe go for grey instead."

Denim

"Unless its a Denim and Diamonds dress code, denim is pretty much an unwelcome guest at a wedding," Jacobs said. "This doesn't mean that pants or a jumpsuit are off the table, but it's best to leave your jeans at home."

There's perhaps one exception to the rule. The wedding planner suggests the only acceptable way to wear denim to a more casual wedding is if you opt for a smart outfit, like this elegant dark denim dress from Neiman Marcus.

If you're not sure, just don't wear it.

The 14 best jobs for people who don't like stress

The best jobs for people who don't like stress aren't just low-pressure — they also pay well and have good prospects.

To find jobs with that perfect combination of good pay, good prospects, and low stress, we combed through the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database that compiles detailed information on hundreds of jobs, and looked at salary data and job projections from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics website

O*NET rates the "stress tolerance" for each job on a scale from zero to 100, where a lower rating signals less stress. (Note: We are not saying these jobs are "stress-free"– they just tend to rate lower than other professions.)

To rate each job, O*NET looks at how frequently workers must accept criticism and deal effectively with high stress at work.

Here are 14 jobs that pay more than median annual wage of $37,040 a year, are projected to grow by 2024, and earned a stress tolerance rating of 55 or lower, in order from highest to lowest stress score.

The annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is one of the most prestigious gigs a model can land. Gaining your "angel wings," intricately designed pairs of life-sized wings given to the most highly-regarded models in the show, is a whole other privilege.

Jan Planit, who used to head up top modelling agency IMG and now runs Planit Model Management, once told the New York Post: "There are very few special things you can achieve as a model. Getting your Angel wings is the ultimate."

The iconic shows are famed for their dramatic, colourful, and skimpy outfits, as well as their impressive line up of entertainment.

Last year 51 top models made the final cut for the show, of which just 14 were designated "Victoria's Secret Angels"— brand ambassadors who travel the world promoting Victoria's Secret year-round. Best friends Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner became the most recent models to earn their wings on stage at the 2016 show.

While being in the show might be a privilege, the money doesn't hurt, either. Nine of the models who appeared in the 2016 show even appeared on Forbes' list of the world’s 20 highest-paid models in 2016.

Scroll down to see the highest-paid Victoria's Secret models from last year's show, ranking in ascending order by their 2016 earnings, according to Forbes.

9. Taylor Hill — $4 million (£3 million).

Taylor Hill, the 21-year old "girl next door from Colorado" and Vogue cover star, became the face of Topshop's  AW16 campaign in July 2016. Since then her Instagram follower base has almost doubled — she now has 8.3 million followers of her @taylor_hill account.

Hill walked her first VS show in 2014 and became an Angel a year later.

8. Jasmines Tookes — $4 million (£3 million).

Californian Jasmine Tookes is one of only three non-white models — all VS models — to make Forbes' highest earning list in 2016.

The 25-year-old gained her wings in 2015, after first walking a Victoria's Secret show in 2012.

7. Lily Aldridge — $4 million (£3.5 million).

LA-born Lily Aldridge walked her first Victoria's Secret show in 2009, and became an Angel the following year. The 30-year old's favourite place in the world is her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, according to her VS profile. Her Instagram has 5.1 million followers.

The cloud is getting more reliable, but using it to move large files around still requires a very fast internet connection, so it still pays to keep a flash drive handy. This drive from SanDisk should be perfect for most day-to-day tasks.

It's got 64GB of storage — enough to hold thousands of pictures, songs, and documents, or hours of HD footage. It's also capable of transferring data at USB 3.0 speeds, so getting stuff onto and off of the drive will be snappier than using older flash drives.

An external hard drive

Flash drives are great for smaller files, but it pays to have a local backup. Should anything happen to your computer's internal hard drive, it's nice to know that your data is safe.

At 500GB, this should be more than enough to back up the average person's photos, documents, music, and movies.

A lock port

If you've got tech you want to stay put, then protect it! Kensington lock ports are still available on a wide variety of laptops and are definitely a theft-deterrent.

This new tablet brings the effortless feeling of writing on paper to the digital world

press remarkable business4

According to Magnus Wanberg, there are two types of people in the world: Those who do everything digitally, and "paper people"— those who prefer reading actual books or writing in notebooks.

It's the latter group that inspired Wanberg and his team to create the reMarkable tablet, a device that looks, feels, and acts like paper.

"We just had this idea that we fell in love with: A device that could take the paper experience but add digital power on top, because paper is so limited," Wanberg, the founder and CEO of reMarkable, told Business Insider.

So Wanberg started asking around, trying to see if anyone else felt the same way he did.

"We found a resounding ‘yes.’ This was an unsolved problem," he said.

Wanberg and his team in Oslo, Norway, set out to build the tablet, eliciting the help of Japanese company E Ink, the leading creators of electronic ink for ebooks.

Four years later, reMarkable is debuting its tablet for paper people, a device designed to do three things: Read, write, and sketch. The device costs $529, with the accompanying pen retailing for $79.

Take a look.

SEE ALSO: This credit-card-sized 'dumb phone' helped me de-stress and disconnect for the first time in weeks

In the past, tablets like the reMarkable have struggled with one problem: lag. While others have tried to create a tablet for drawing and writing, the display has typically been too slow — your drawing will end up chasing your pen rather than appearing as soon as your pen touches the screen. But reMarkable figured out a way to solve that problem.

When the reMarkable team first got in touch with E Ink, the company said what they wanted to do wasn't possible. But Wanberg didn't listen.

"We were young and dumb and thought, ‘Alright, let’s have a crack at this. We’re engineers, we can maybe solve this,’" Wanberg said. "At the same time, we assumed also quite arrogantly that we would solve this. So we started on some product development in parallel tracks from early 2014."

By 2015, the team came up with a solution for the lag problem and took it back to Taiwan to show E Ink.

"Their jaw just hit the floor," Wanberg said.

And because they'd already been working on product development on the hardware side, the reMarkable team was able to fast-track production of their tablet.

What resulted from their efforts is a thin, lightweight tablet and accompanying pen that writes and draws instantly. I had the chance to try reMarkable's 7th generation prototype, and was immediately impressed by how quick it was and how effortlessly the pen glided across the screen. It felt a lot like, well, paper.

reMarkable offers a variety of brushes — like a felt tip pen or a pencil — that you can change on the screen. There are also tools like an eraser, a clone tool, and the ability to create layers, all with the intention that the tablet should be able to replace a sketch pad.

Most Eligible Influencers_Cover

The rise of social media has given birth to a new type of star: the "influencer."

Many of these influencers have careers outside of social media, but they are famous for being really good at social media, particularly Instagram. These are people with tens or hundreds of thousands of followers checking out their photos, and who brands will often pay money to be associated with.

But part of what makes social-media influencers intriguing is that they let fans into their lives in a casual and intimate way. They aren't peering down at you from celebrity mountain like a Hollywood movie star. They are more like a friend, or perhaps someone you could even date.

But wait, could you?

Well, you might at least have a shot — it turns out a lot of influencers are active on dating apps. Dating app Hinge recently debuted the ability to link your Instagram to your profile, something you can also do on competitor Tinder as well. And in doing so, Hinge found out that some of its users have quite prominent Instagram followings.

Hinge put a list together for us of the 30 most eligible influencers, decided by who had a combination of activity on the app and a ton of Instagram followers. Here they are, along with links so you can actually find their particular profile if you want. Good luck!

The Insider Pick:

  • Your dog deserves high-quality food that's nutritious and healthy. Orijen makes the best dog food you can buy with the freshest regional ingredients. Every recipe is packed with protein, limited in carbohydrates, and loaded with natural flavor.

Though it may seem like dog food is dog food, not all dog foods are created equal. The quality of pet food products varies greatly from one manufacturer to another, and you can’t always trust what you see on the label. While there are many high-quality dog food brands on the market, there are also those that cut corners by bulking up their products with low-quality fillers and artificial additives. Pet foods are not regulated to the degree that human foods are, so if you want to find a quality product for your dog, you’ll have to do some digging.

The quality of your dog’s diet is directly related to his health, so don’t settle for a mediocre dog food. All dogs have the same basic nutritional needs, so it is possible to evaluate the quality of one product compared to another in terms of how well each one meets those nutritional needs. In order to make such a comparison, however, you need to have an understanding of your dog’s nutritional requirements and some knowledge of how to read a pet food label.

These things can take time and practice but, luckily for you, we’ve done all the dirty work. We have scoured the reviews and compared dozens of products to find the top six dog food brands in different categories.

To give your dog the best of everything, you can also check out our guide of the best dog beds, the best dog toys, and the best leashes for walking your pup.

Although Orijen dog food is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider dog food by Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Primal Pet Foods, and Whole Earth Farms.

The best dog food overall

Why you'll love it: Orijen's dog food is naturally grain-free and designed to mimic the natural biological diet your dog is evolved to follow.

Though all dogs have the same basic nutritional requirements, what makes a certain product the best choice for your dog may vary according to his age, activity level, and specific dietary needs. For a brand that offers premium dog food designed to suit your dog’s natural biological needs, our top choice is Orijen. This brand creates pet foods that nourish your dog’s body just as nature intended, and it uses only the freshest regional ingredients in an assortment of formulas catered to dogs in all life stages from puppy to senior.

Named one of the top picks for dog food by Reviews.com, Orijen follows a “biologically appropriate” approach to pet nutrition. Each of its dog foods is designed to mirror the type of natural diet your dog should follow based on his wild ancestry. Orijen dog foods are rich in meat and proteins. Each product contains up to 90 percent meat, which is is more than three times the amount used in conventional dog food. Furthermore, each recipe contains a guaranteed minimum of 38 percent crude protein by volume.

While a dog’s diet should consist primarily of animal products, dogs do have a limited ability to digest plant materials, so digestible grain-free carbohydrates like fresh fruits and vegetables can be a valuable addition. Orijen dog foods contain no more than 20 percent carbohydrates and only low-glycemic, highly digestible carbs like lentils, pumpkin, leafy greens, and fresh fruits. Plus, all of the formulas are naturally grain-free.

Dog Food Advisor notes that Orijen's dog food is above-average and that none of its foods have been subject to recall. The brand also receives rave reviews from Dog Food Guru and Dog Food Insider.

Orijen only sells dry dog foods at this time, but it offers an assortment of kibbles and freeze-dried dog foods for puppies, adults, and senior dogs as well as a selection of treats made with 100 percent fresh meat ingredients.

Pros: Made in the United States, biologically appropriate diets, high-protein formulas, carbohydrate-limited and low-glycemic, formulated for different life stages, minimum 38 percent crude protein, traditional kibble and freeze-dried options, all grain-free recipes

Cons: No wet food products currently available, some recipes may contain plant proteins like peas and dried alfalfa, many recipes contain common proteins and other ingredients that may trigger allergies in some dogs (like chicken, beef, and fish)

The best dry dog food

Why you'll love it: Canidae uses premium proteins and digestible carbohydrates in each of its formulas to suit dogs in all life stages and those with unique dietary needs.

If you’re looking for a premium brand of dry dog food that offers a wide selection of high-quality recipes, our top choice is Canidae. An independent and family-owned company, Canidae sources its ingredients from other family-owned businesses throughout the US, and the company produces every one of its nutritionally dense formulas in company-owned-and-operated facilities. This brand offers traditional life stages formulas as well as grain-free and limited-ingredient recipes.

As a whole, the Canidae dog food brand receives excellent reviews from Top Dog Tips and Petsho as a US-based company that offers a variety of formulas for dogs with different nutritional needs. The Life Stages line of products features seven unique recipes made with premium proteins and digestible carbohydrates. In addition to three “all life stages” formulas, there are recipes for senior dogs, puppies, and large-breed dogs.

The Canidae Grain-Free PURE lineup includes nine grain-free formulas made with premium proteins such as duck, wild boar, and fresh lamb. Each of these recipes is made with a limited number of ingredients to reduce the risk for food allergies. There are also three recipes specially formulated for small breed dogs.

Another thing that makes Canidae our top choice for dry dog food is the fact that it has an entirely separate brand that is designed to be affordable. The Under the Sun brand is still made by Canidae with its farm-fresh ingredients, but it is available at a more affordable price point for dog owners on a budget. Under the Sun appears on Dog Food Advisor’s list of 4-star brands.

In the company’s twenty-year history, Canidae has had only had one recall and it was a voluntary recall issued due to a concern for potential salmonella contamination.

Pros: US-based company, independent and family-owned, company-owned manufacturing facilities, fresh regional ingredients, wide variety of high-quality recipes, life stages formulas for puppies through senior dogs, grain-free and limited ingredient formulas for dogs with food allergies, separate brand for dog owners on a budget, recipes for small breed dogs

Cons: Company has had one recall affecting four products, many recipes contain common proteins and other ingredients that may trigger allergies in some dogs (like chicken, rice, and fish)

The best wet dog food

Why you'll love it: Blue Buffalo offers tons of great recipes for both wet and dry dog food, and its formulas are full of natural ingredients.

If you are looking for a high-quality wet dog food, we heartily recommend the Blue Buffalo brand. Not only is Blue Buffalo one of the top manufacturers of natural dog food in general, but it offers four distinct product lines so you can choose the wet food formula that best suits your dog’s needs and preferences. According to DogHealth.com, wet dog food may be more expensive than dry food, but it tends to be lower in carbohydrates, higher in moisture, and more palatable for some dogs.

The Blue Buffalo company believes that pets are members of the family and that they should be treated as such. This is why the company uses only the highest-quality natural ingredients in each of its recipes. Blue Buffalo follows a holistic approach to pet nutrition, choosing each of its ingredients carefully to ensure complete and balanced nutrition without the use of any by-products, fillers, or artificial additives. Every recipe goes above and beyond your dog’s minimum nutritional requirements.

In addition to being rated among Dog Food Advisor’s 5-star wet food brands, Blue Buffalo is also a top choice for HerePup.com and DogFood.Guru. In terms of variety, few brands offer as many choices as Blue Buffalo. The Freedom line of grain-free formulas contains ten recipes and the Basics line of limited ingredient formulas contains nine. There are more than thirty recipes in the Wilderness line of meat-rich formulas and forty-five in the Life Protection Formula lineup.

One thing you should be aware of with the Blue Buffalo brand is that it has several product recalls in its history. This isn’t terribly surprising, however, for a brand that was founded more than two decades ago and that manufactures hundreds of products. It is worth noting that, according to Petful.com, many of the brand’s recalls were issued voluntarily as a precautionary measure.

Pros: US-based company, wide variety of product choices, every recipe starts with high-quality animal protein, all-natural ingredients with no artificial additives, recipes designed with a holistic approach to nutrition, every formula contains LifeSource Bits for a boost of nutrition and flavor

Cons: Numerous recalls in brand history, many recipes contain common proteins and other ingredients that may trigger allergies in some dogs (like chicken, rice, and fish), recent changes in recipe may cause digestive upset in some dogs

Zaha Hadid

The late architect Zaha Hadid — known as the "Queen of the Curve" for the modern, curving designs of her buildings —had a legendary career.

The Iraqi-born British architect became the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize (the Nobel Prize of her field) in 2004. She also received numerous other awards and honors, including being named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DME) in 2012 and earning the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal in 2015 — the first ever given to a woman.

Hadid designed everything from a metro station in Saudi Arabia, to the aquatics center for the 2012 London Olympics, to a city center in downtown Belgrade — all in her signature flowing style.

One of the last buildings she designed will be completed in New York City this summer. It's an 11-story condominium made of steel and glass, and it incorporates a unique curvy chevron pattern.

Hadid died in a Miami hospital in 2016 after suffering a heart attack. Google is honoring her Wednesday with a Google Doodle on its homepage and a retrospective of her work.

Coraopolis, Pennsylvania

Not all big businesses are based in major cities.

Some, in fact, are located a bit off the beaten path, in areas with relatively small populations.

Business Insider recently scoured the Fortune 500 list for such companies.

We skipped right over any organizations headquartered in the biggest US cities. From there, we ordered each company's location based on population size, using information from City Data.

As it turns out, there are a good number of companies that aren't based in the biggest US cities. Some, like Walmart, maintain a headquarters in smaller towns like Bentonville, Arkansas, which has a population of 41,613. But we went even smaller: The companies on this list are all based in locations with populations under 7,000, as of 2014.

The best water bottles you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

IP_Water_Bottle_Buying_Guide_With_Badge 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • A great refillable water bottle will help you stay hydrated while you’re on the go. Of all the water bottles we've tested and researched, the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth is the best one you can buy with its rugged construction and great temperature retention.

Reusable water bottles are a must for anyone who wants to quench their thirst without leaving a trail of landfill-clogging plastic in their wake. But just like travel mugs, choosing a water bottle isn’t as simple as picking the prettiest option or the cheapest one. If your bottle is mostly going to sit on your desk at work, your needs will be very different than if you want a lightweight companion for an epic weekend hike or a leak-proof bottle that can rattle around in your gym bag without soaking everything inside.

Experts have conducted a lot of water-bottle tests, evaluating criteria including weight, design, ease of use, and durability. We read through the most recent tests, as well as thousands of owner reviews on major retail sites to make our picks. We've also used a few of these water bottles ourselves.

Our favorite water bottles include a versatile stainless-steel option for the majority of buyers, an inexpensive but reliable plastic bottle when budget is a concern, and a sturdy bottle for glass lovers. We also include picks for anyone who wants a bottle with high-end design and a collapsible water bottle for situations when weight and portability are paramount.

You should also check out our guide for the best travel mugs you can buy.

Although the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Camelbak Chute, the Lifefactory Glass, the S’well Stainless Steel, and the Vapur Element water bottles.

SEE ALSO: The best travel mugs you can buy

The best water bottle overall

Why you'll love it: The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth water bottle is durable, keeps water ice cold for hours on end, looks cool, and is easy to use.

Hydro Flask is a great choice if you hate gulping warm water in the summer. It also offers some much-appreciated versatility, with a wide opening that fits three lids depending on your needs: A flip lid with a loop, a flex cap with an even larger loop (included), and a straw lid for more convenient sipping. Users like having the option to switch out lids, and the wide mouth also makes it easy to load this bottle up with ice. You can choose between 18-, 32-, 40- and 64-ounce capacities and a number of fun colors.

During Outdoor Gear Lab's testing, ice resisted melting for nearly a full 24 hours, and water was ice cold for more than a full day. Outside found that the bottle’s contents warmed one measly degree after 24 hours and noted that it kept a gin and tonic “ice freaking cold” after 14 hours in 90-degree heat. The insulated stainless steel also keeps drinks warm for several hours, so Hydro Flask can pull double-duty as a travel mug for coffee and tea.

This thing is seriously rugged, too. Like all stainless-steel water bottles, it can dent when dropped, but in Outside’s tests, it managed to survive being pelted with large rocks and getting backed over by a Toyota Camry and a Chevy Silverado. After all that punishment, it sustained a quarter-inch dent and one small scratch.  It also has a loop on the lid that Your Best Digs says makes it easy to carry one-handed.

What’s not to like? The Wirecutter notes that it’s heavier than other bottles (the 18-ounce version weighs in at 11.6 ounces, the 32-ounce closes in on 1 pound) so serious hikers looking to save on weight might want to consider lighter options.

Some Amazon reviewers complain that the flip top is prone to leaks, so consider sticking with the flex cap if you want to toss your bottle in a bag without worrying. A few also complain of a slight metallic taste. Finally, this bottle is hand-wash only – steer clear if you live and die by the dishwasher.

Pros: Very durable, great at keeping drinks cold or hot, easy to use, compatible with three kinds of lids, comes in high-capacity options

Cons: Heavy, expensive, flip top may leak, not dishwasher-safe

Buy the 32-ounce Hydro Flask Wide Mouth on Amazon for $29.95 and up

The best plastic water bottle

Why you'll love it: If you prioritize price or weight over temperature retention, consider the inexpensive and easy-to-use Camelbak Chute water bottle

Stainless-steel water bottles like the Hydro Flask have a lot of pros, but they’re heavy. A plastic water bottle like the Camelbak Chute is cheaper and a lot lighter. In fact, the largest 50-ounce Chute weighs a measly 7.6 ounces. If you’re not quite that thirsty, no worries: There are 20-, 25-, and 34-ounce versions, too.

Like the Hydro Flask, the Chute has a wide mouth that The Wirecutter says makes it easy to fill and load up with ice, and the large spout means you can gulp until you’re content instead of dealing with a valve that restricts flow, which is common on other water bottles. It also has a loop on the cap, making it easy to clip to a backpack or hook around a finger or two.

Though the Chute may not be as tough as stainless steel, it’s still relatively rugged for a plastic water bottle. It’s made of BPA-free, dishwasher-safe Tritan plastic that is engineered to resist cracking. Several Amazon reviewers say it has been dropped repeatedly on concrete without shattering or showing any signs of wear. Even better, most say the bottle doesn’t impart any funky plastic taste to their water.

A few minor issues: Testers with Your Best Digs say it can be tricky to lock the cap down onto the lid while drinking, though they still appreciate having the option to keep the cap from springing back and bonking them in the nose. Of course, plastic isn’t great at regulating temperatures, so if you need to keep drinks hot or want to keep them cold for longer, take a look at the pricier stainless-steel Chute.

Pros: Lightweight, inexpensive, durable, easy to carry, gulp-friendly spout, dishwasher-safe, comes in high-capacity options

Cons: Lid is tricky to lock down, won’t keep your water cold for long, may “sweat” with condensation on a hot day

Buy the 34-ounce (1 liter) Camelbak Chute on Amazon for $10.53 and up

The best glass water bottle

Why you'll love it: The Lifefactory Glass Water Bottle is a better choice for the most discerning palates and a more eco-friendly choice for anyone concerned with green living.

If you hate that metallic or plasticy taste you get with other water bottles, you'll love the Lifefactory Glass Water Bottle, which testers say keeps water fresh and untainted, even after a full day sitting in the bottle. As Outdoor Gear Lab notes, “There is a reason that upscale restaurants always serve drinks in glasses rather than plastic or metal cups. It just tastes better.”

The Lifefactory is also a good option if you’re worried about the chemicals in plastic and want something that is more readily recyclable.

No, glass bottles won’t survive as many drops as stainless steel or shatter-resistant plastic, but The Wirecutter says the Lifefactory still has “surprising resilience against casual abuse” because of its substantial silicone sleeve. Several Amazon reviewers confirm that they’ve dropped this bottle without incident, even on hard surfaces. The sleeve also provides a grippier surface for holding the bottle. Since glass “sweats” more than other materials, this is a feature most users should appreciate.

You have a few lid options with Lifefactory water bottles: A silicone flip cap (included), a straw cap and a leak-proof classic cap meant for those who want to toss the bottle in a bag without worrying. Testers with Outdoor Gear Lab say the wide mouth makes it easy to fill, though they do note it can be easy to misthread the cap, raising your risk of leaks. The bottle is dishwasher-safe, even with the silicone sleeve on.

Other issues are minimal: Your Best Digs cautions that the flip cap can pop off and doesn’t regulate flow well enough for users who may just want a sip. Of course, like all glass bottles, the Lifefactory is heavy — the 22-ounce bottle is just over a pound — so it isn’t the best pick when weight is a big concern.

Pros: Glass won’t alter taste of water, more recyclable than other options, silicone sleeve provides good grip and protection from bumps and drops, compatible with three kinds of lids, dishwasher-safe

Cons: Heavy, glass is less durable than plastic or stainless steel, flip top may not regulate flow well enough for sippers, may “sweat” with condensation on a hot day

Adam Hansen grand tour record in a row

There are lots of popular records in cycling — most Tour de France victories, most wins in the classics, the hour record. And then there are little-known ones you don't hear about.

Adam Hansen has done what no one has done before: He has started and finished 17 grand tours — or three-week stage races — in a row. Over the past six years, he has completed six Tours of Italy, five Tours de France, and six Tours of Spain consecutively.

On May 28, Hansen notched No. 17 when he finished the 100th edition of the Giro d'Italia.

Given how difficult and perilous racing at cycling's top level can be, it's a mind-boggling record that the Australian says he never set out to achieve, and yet it's one that may never be broken.

Here's some insight into the world's most consistent professional bike racer:

Hansen says he never intended to set any records.

Hansen has completed every one of cycling's grand tours since Spain's national tour in 2011. His achievement beat that of Marino Lejarreta, a Basque climber, whose record 10 straight finishes stood for two decades.

Here's how Hansen's current streak breaks down by year, race, and result:

2011 / Tour of Spain / 129
2012 / Tour of Italy / 94
2012 / Tour de France / 81
2012 / Tour of Spain / 123
2013 / Tour of Italy / 72
2013 / Tour de France / 72
2013 / Tour of Spain / 60
2014 / Tour of Italy / 73
2014 / Tour de France / 64
2014 / Tour of Spain / 53
2015 / Tour of Italy / 77
2015 / Tour de France / 114
2015 / Tour of Spain / 55
2016 / Tour of Italy / 68
2016 / Tour de France / 100
2016 / Tour of Spain /100
2017 / Tour of Italy / 93

So what has it taken to achieve such a record? "Being consistent and focused. You have to be very determined, and I guess you have to love it," he said.

Interestingly, he also said he never had this record as a goal, VeloNews reported. "I feel like I'm trapped by it and that I sort of have to keep going," he said.

Cycling is one of the world's hardest sports, and Adam Hansen is one of the world's most tenacious cyclists.

Hansen's main job as a pro bike racer is to ride as a "domestique" (French for servant). He is not paid to win races but to work for others on the team. Rain or shine, Hansen's teammates count on him to ride into headwinds and keep them well positioned in the pack, help them avoid crashing, bring them food and water, and give up a wheel if someone gets a flat.

At 35, Hansen's vast experience is key in grand tours where team leaders are under enormous pressure to deliver wins for their teams and sponsors. Hansen rides through all the elements to protect his teammates from whatever craziness the races throw at them.

At 6-1 and 170 pounds, his size comes in handy when push comes to shove and races heat up.

Hansen's expertise lies in helping others win.

One minute he might be called back to the team car to fetch water bottles for his teammates, and the next he might be tasked with leading out his team's sprinter to the line at 40 mph.

An Australian native from Southport, Queensland, one of his nicknames is "Croc Man." He is known for his playful sense of humor and advises his fans not to take him at all seriously.
