iOS 11

Apple's next major software update for the iPhone and iPad is iOS 11, which was unveiled on Monday during the company's annual conference for app developers.

There are plenty of important changes coming in iOS 11, like the ability to use apps in augmented reality. But the most notable new features, like the ability to send money between friends with iMessage, will make your iPhone and iPad more useful.

We've rounded up the best new features in iOS 11 you can look forward to when Apple makes the update available for everyone this fall:

SEE ALSO: Apple just made its first big push into AR, the tech that wants to eventually kill the smartphone

When you set up a new iPhone or iPad, you'll be able to just hold the device next to another Apple product you already own (like a Mac) to instantly transfer your settings.

You can send money directly to your friends in the Messages app with Apple Pay. It's basically Venmo for only iPhone owners.

You can customize which settings appear in Control Center, the menu that appears when you swipe up from the bottom of your screen. That means you can finally add a shortcut to turn on Low Power Mode!

7 risky fashion trends that will totally pay off

$

street styleThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Some trends are more risky than others, but they'll totally pay off.
  • Try rocking sheer and lace, or dramatic earings with pom-pom details.

Some trends, try as you may, just make for better weekend wear than office attire. This isn’t to say your Monday to Friday wardrobe has to be boring, just that a break in the work week gives a girl an opportunity to have extra fun with fashion (most office dress codes don’t include one-shoulder tops). And this summer, there is plenty of fun to be had. From cutouts to pom-poms, the season is bringing with it playful pieces that add extra style to date night, girls’ night, brunch, and beyond. Below, seven trends you should try ASAP when you get off the clock.

Exaggerated ruffles

Ruffles are arguably the biggest trend of the season and are pretty much everywhere. Save oversized versions like this super flirty Stylekeepers So Long Lover Ruffled Top ($118) for your off-duty outfits.

Cutouts

With the sunny season comes baring a little skin, of course, and cutouts are a fun way to show a playful peek. This LoveShackFancy Jenna Striped Cutout Cotton-Blend Dress ($207) will work from beach to town and to dinner.

Pom-Poms

A statement earring should be on your must list for summer but can be a little much for the office. Bright pom-pom styles like these Katie Kime Moroccan Pom-Pom Earrings ($68) are best suited for after hours (and perfect for vacay!).

13 things guys can buy once and wear forever

filson

Buying quality costs more, but it's often worth it. There are some items a man needs to buy only once. Provided proper care is taken, they can be worn or used forever.

We've rounded up 13 items that will neither break nor go out of style, so you can build your wardrobe with an eye to longevity.

Taking into account the odd sole replacement here and there, these items will last decades, even with constant use. Many of these products are even covered by lifetime warranties, so you can be sure to get your money's worth.

SEE ALSO: Here's how and when men should roll up their shirtsleeves

A quality pair of dress shoes

Take care of a pair of quality dress shoes, and they'll last as long as you need them to.

With the proper maintenance, a good pair of dress shoes should last until you no longer need them, even with constant wear.

Brands with the reputation to create shoes like this include Allen Edmonds, Alden, Church's, and Crockett and Jones.

Bean Boots

L.L. Bean's Bean Boots are the quintessential bad weather boot, so it's no surprise that they're tough as nails.

They'll take anything you throw at them and are even backed by L.L. Bean's unconditional guarantee, in case anything comes undone before you think it should.

Classically styled ties

Chances are you'll never wear a tie out. You will, however, get tired of your patterns and widths, and you'll need to buy new ties that are styled a little differently.

We recommend a subtly styled type in a 2.5-inch- to three-inch-wide size, which will be able to handle any new trends in the years to come.

Beyonce made waves in early February by revealing that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting twins: Her photo announcement quickly became the most liked post in Instagram's history. But Queen Bey's twins won't be the only famous multiples born in 2017: On June 6, George and Amal Clooney announced that they had welcomed their own healthy pair of twins into the world.

Here are 17 more stars who have twins — and one bonus celeb who has triplets:

Mariah Carey gave birth to Monroe and Moroccan in 2011. Today, they're 5 years old.

Things didn't work out with the twins' father, Nick Cannon: Cannon filed for divorce in December 2014.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced the birth of twins Vivienne and Knox in May 2008.

The 8-year-old twins are just two of the six kids at the center of Brangelina's highly publicized divorce proceedings.

Jennifer Lopez and former husband Marc Anthony welcomed twins Max and Emme in 2008.

JLo told Entertainment Tonight that her kids make her feel young (it's seriously hard to believe that the singer is 47 years old).

"They keep you very young and running around, and I still get to dance and perform," she said of the 8-year-old twins. "That keeps you very in shape and youthful as well."

I’ve written about a lot of great tech, but these are the gadgets I use every day

91zq8bpWyIL._SL1500_While my MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iPhone are the three pillars of my digital life, they wouldn't be nearly as powerful without some accessories. I have hyper-specific tools for once-in-a-while tasks, but I wanted to highlight the tech accessories that I use every day without fail.

These accessories allow me the get the most out of those main products, and ultimately add a whole lot of value to my tech life. They save me time and allow me to do things I wouldn't be able to otherwise, whether that means letting me stay productive or helping me to relax.

I've written about some of these products before, but others haven't merited their own post yet. The best part about these products is that a lot of them can work together, as opposed to being siloed — that's what makes them easy to use daily.

SEE ALSO: 50 must-have tech accessories under $50

DON'T MISS: 8 must-have iPhone accessories under $20

A laptop stand

The iPad Pro might be my primary computer at home, but my MacBook Pro still handles some key daily tasks for me, like acting as my media server. For the past year, I've kept my laptop hooked up to an external display (more on that in a minute), and in this stand by Twelve South. The BookArk accomplishes two tasks, it keeps my MacBook Pro in a stable position, and it saves me a lot of room.

Rather than have my laptop on a horizontal stand, the BookArk lets me tuck my MacBook away while still leaving all of its ports exposed. If I need to pop in an HDMI cable to play a Steam game, it's right there. The way I have my laptop oriented (as pictured, actually), all of the wires go back behind the desk making my setup look even more clean and professional.

Twelve South BookArk, $49.99, available at Amazon

A 4K monitor

I went 4K, and I'm not going back. Not everyone is going to need a big, 4K monitor, but if you do, I highly recommend this one from ASUS. It has two HDMI ports and a Displayport 1.2 port. The HDMI ports came in handy before I bought a TV; I would hook my game consoles directly into the monitor and they looked great.

At 28 inches, this is plenty big enough to use as a primary screen in a pinch, although you can't plug a coaxial cable into it. As a computer monitor, I'm pretty happy; for the price, you're getting a big beautiful display that's perfect if you want a lot of space to edit images, videos, or use a layout program. It's not the highest-end screen out there, but for my day-to-day needs, it has been more than good enough.

ASUS PB287Q 4k UHD LED Monitor, $399.99, available at Amazon

A flash drive

I love flash drives enough that I have two of these 256GB drives — one at home and one at work, for different, specific reasons. At work, my flash drive holds my massive music library. The library can't fit on my phone, and I don't want to associate my work computer with my Apple ID, so, for me, this is the best way to listen to music at work.

At home, I use my flash drive for more around-the-house purposes. I make bootable operating system installers, hold large video files on it while making space on my home server and performing other random tasks. I also use it to take large files from one place to another.

I love the cloud, but I'm not going to rely on a fast internet connection to send large project files from place to place. I was reminded of the utility of flash drives recently when my internet went out for a few days. While I wrestled with my Comcast router's settings, I knew anything I worked on at home could be easily taken to work thanks to my flash drive.

Katy Perry

Celebrities already spend big bucks on everything from their engagement rings to their homes, so why wouldn't they lavishly spend on their birthday parties, too?

Kate Moss partied with her guests for nearly 100 hours when she turned 40, Justin Bieber rented an island for his 21st birthday, and Simon Cowell spent over a million on his big 50th bash.

Keep reading to see the 17 most extravagant celebrity milestone birthdays. Who knows? Maybe you'll even get some inspiration for your next party.

Justin Bieber rented an entire island for his 21st birthday.

For Justin Bieber's 21st birthday, the singer popped champagne on a private island in the Caribbean near Grenada that he rented with a model guest list including Hailey Baldwin.

And it's good to be Justin Bieber — the singer also threw a huge party for himself at James Goldstein's house in LA in 2016 for his 22nd with a star-studded guest list.

Beyoncé spent her 35th birthday weekend with the Obama family before getting down to '70s tunes.

When Beyoncé turned 35 in 2016, she decided to go big with a "Soul Train"-themed bash.

Her entire guest list — which included stars like husband Jay Z, her sister Solange Knowles, Usher, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beats, and former Destiny's Child members Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland (among many others) — dressed in the '70s theme.

But it wasn't just about the party. The Grammy Winner also spent her birthday weekend hanging out with the Obama family, former President Bill Clinton, and was serenaded by Chance The Rapper and Coldplay.

Kris Jenner’s 60th birthday party was "Great Gatsby"-themed.

The matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner clan got a huge surprise when her famous daughters threw her a fabulous bash inspired by "The Great Gatsby."

Celebrities including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Tina Knowles and more wore '20s-inspired get ups and danced under a ceiling of balloons, chandeliers, and a disco ball. There was even a confetti cannon, an inside source told People

She was even serenaded by her son-in-law Kanye West.

The 21 busiest actors in Hollywood right now

Elle Fanning Nicole Kidman How to Talk to Girls at Parties Pascal Le Segretain Getty

Every year, it often seems like there's at least one actor who is in absolutely everything.

In 2011, it was Jessica Chastain (her most popular films being "The Help" and "Zero Dark Thirty"). This year, there are so many actors making us wonder how these people have personal lives, and how they even have the time to eat, sleep, or have more than one project going on at the same time.

These busy people have already appeared in a lot of things this year, will appear in more things in the next six months, and will appear in even more things come 2018 (and, in some cases, 2019). Tom Cruise is just the latest actor — between his new "The Mummy" out June 9, and news of an upcoming "Top Gun" sequel — to make our heads spin.

Here are the busiest actors working in Hollywood right now:

SEE ALSO: The 10 biggest box-office bombs of 2017 so far

Tom Cruise

Cruise is not an actor who likes to slow down. In addition to his new reboot of "The Mummy," he's confirmed for a "Top Gun" sequel, known as "Top Gun: Maverick," that should be shooting soon. He also has "American Made," a based-on-real-life thriller, in 2017, and you can see him in another "Mission: Impossible" movie soon enough.

Elle Fanning

The 20-year old actress has four movies set to premiere in 2017, and two projects coming in 2018. And two projects without release dates. Fanning had several movies premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, including Sofia Coppola's "The Beguiled" and "How to Talk to Girls at Parties."

Nicole Kidman

One of Kidman's many projects for 2017 is "The Beguiled," with fellow busy lady Elle Fannng. In addition to her critically acclaimed turn in HBO's "Big Little Lies," Kidman will be in the second season of "Top of the Lake," which received great reviews at Cannes. Kidman had two other movies premiere at Cannes in 2017 (including "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" with Elle Fanning), and will be in two movies in 2018. She's also expressed interest in a second season of "Big Little Lies," which she executive produced.

Apple says its new $350 speaker will 'reinvent home music' — here's what we know

$
0
0

Apple's first new major product since the Apple Watch was announced this week: It's called HomePod, and it's unlike anything Apple's done before.

Apple HomePod white and black

It's a speaker, yes, but it's also a home assistant powered by Siri. It's Apple's equivalent of the Amazon Echo or Google Home — but mixed with a bit of the Sonos home speaker concept.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says HomePod is Apple's attempt to "reinvent home music." But what makes it different from the competition? Why would someone spend the extra money for HomePod?

Here are the best answers we've found.

SEE ALSO: Apple's new HomePod sounds way better than the Amazon Echo

DON'T MISS: 3 reasons why Apple's new smart-home speaker falls short of the competition

If you're familiar with Amazon's Echo and Google's Home, you're familiar with HomePod.

Which is to say, "HomePod is a combination speaker/microphone that both plays music and responds to your voice requests."

-In the case of Amazon Echo, a digital voice assistant named Alexa powers the experience.

-In the case of Google Home, a digital voice assistant named Google Assistant powers the experience.

-In the case of Apple's HomePod, Siri powers the experience.

Siri can play music, tell you the weather, and even power various devices in your home.

What's different about HomePod than the competition? In short: Apple stuff.

Are you an Apple Music subscriber? HomePod is probably perfect for you. And that's because Apple's subscription music service doesn't really work with Amazon Echo or Google Home.

Sure, you could connect to the Echo or Home as Bluetooth devices, but that stinks. You wanna be able to speak to these devices, and for them to play music that you requested. If you want to do that with Apple Music, HomePod is your only real choice.

On the flipside, HomePod does work with music services other than Apple Music — but only through Apple's Airplay 2 functionality. Think of it like Bluetooth, but instead it's called "Airplay 2"— you can play music from any service that supports Airplay 2, through your phone. That said, you couldn't just say, "Hey Siri, play Kendrick Lamar on Spotify." Voice control will only work if you're using Apple services.

Apple is selling HomePod as a fantastic speaker first and foremost.

The speaker aspect of HomePod is at the forefront of Apple's marketing. When the device was debuted on stage during Apple's annual developer conference, WWDC, the first thing that Apple senior VP of marketing Phil Schiller spoke about was audio quality.

More directly: Apple seems to be targeting folks who buy stuff like the Sonos Play 3 speaker rather than folks who buy devices like the Amazon Echo.

"The speaker delivers the deepest and cleanest bass possible, with low distortion," Apple's PR says. Beyond deep bass, a set of seven tweeters sits in a ring — facing outward — in the base of the HomePod, providing what Apple calls "well-balanced smooth timbre." That's important, as tweeters output the high-end of songs (the treble) while woofers output the low-end of songs (the bass) — HomePod has speakers handling the entire spectrum of sound.

How the richest soccer clubs compare to the richest NFL teams in 2017

Liverpool

There is a significant cultural divide between the United States and Europe when it comes to the appreciation of sport.

While the NFL reigns supreme in America, soccer (or football if you prefer) dominates the zeitgeist internationally. Both the football teams stateside and the football clubs abroad bring in a ton of revenue.

Using data from Forbes, we ranked each team by the amount of revenue they generate (in US dollars) and compared how much the richest clubs in Europe are taking in compared to the NFL.

What the data shows is that while midmarket NFL teams bring in more money than their European counterparts, when it comes to the big money soccer clubs, it's tough for the likes of the Cowboys and Patriots to keep pace.

4 hair products every guy should use this summer

shutterstock_330511979Summer can leave a guy's hair feeling dry, frizzy, and unmanageable. Fortunately, there are many styling creams, sprays, and pomades to help sculpt it into something more presentable than the bed head you woke up with.

To help, we asked Kyle Bergman, Birchbox Man's senior merchant, for his favorite lightweight hair stylers. Regardless of your preference, hair texture, or budget, there's an option for you below.

DON'T MISS: I revamped my work wardrobe with almost no effort with this personal shopping service

Byrd Hairdo Light Pomade

A more casual, warm-weather alternative for guys who prefer strong, traditional pomades, this one from Bryd rovides a subtle sheen and a medium hold to keep hair in place while remaining light and pliable. It's water-based so it won't get greasy and washes out easily.

Bergman's Pick: Byrd Hairdo Light Pomade, $22

PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Reworkable Hold Paste

Here's a more lightweight option for guys who use wax to craft messy, high-texture styles like bedhead. The paste adds separation and texture but maintains a flexible, touchable hold and no sticky residue. It also conditions hair with sweet almond oil as it holds.

Bergman's Pick: PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Reworkable Hold Paste, $24

Hanz de Fuko Claymation

Hanz de Fuko's Claymation is great choice for guys who want industrial hold without a thick, greasy styler that will start to run when you sweat. It uses a blend of beeswax and bentonite clay to keep hair firmly in place while retaining a matte, natural finish (it won't look like you have styler in your hair).

It can be styled with your fingers for more texture, or with a comb for a more polished look.

Bergman's Pick: Hanz de Fuko Claymation, $19.50

In that vein, you might want to invest in some compression socks. Physix Gear Sport's lightweight socks offer plenty of coverage and provide additional support around the heels and toes. We encourage you to visit a doctor if your conditions persist, but it's also important to stretch your muscles.

This foot rocker's circular bottom puts your foot in an optimal stretching position and makes it easy to alternate between your arches and ankles. According to the company, you can instantly relieve lower body pain by completing three 30-second repetitions.

It's official: Sales employees care the most about their jobs.

At least that's what a recent survey of more than 169,000 workers across the US from employee engagement software company Quantum Workplace indicates.

More than 80% of sales employees who participated in the survey were found to be engaged in their work, while about 66% of all workers surveyed were found to be engaged.

In this study, engaged employees are defined as having and expressing highly favorable views of their organization, pursuing extra effort at work, and planning to stay with the institution.

Survey participants answered questions designed to gauge their engagement like "Do you plan to leave in the next year?" and "Do you think your CEO has a good vision for the company?" Each respondent was then assigned a score out of six, and employees who scored a five or six were considered engaged, as opposed to contributing, disengaged, and hostile.

10 things your best friend shouldn't judge you for

$

friends graffitiThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Your best friends are the ones you always want to hangout with and feel as if you can tell them anything.
  • You go through the worst together and shouldn't have to worry about them being judgmental.
  • Your friend shouldn't judge you for talking about that ex or ugly crying in your room.

Having a #girlsquad is awesome for all the reasons, but your absolute best friends are the ones who want to hang out with you any time, all the time. No. Matter. What. You can pretty much do anything and your BFFs will still want to be by your side — whether it’s Netflix bingeing on a Saturday night or spending an entire day hunting for the perfect summer slip dress — these are all the things that make the bestie relationship so special. And even when it’s not all fun, they’re with you through thick and thin and are always there in your neediest hour. Which is probably why there are certain things that you know you can only get away with around your best friend — things that would make your other friends crazy but don’t even phase your BFF. Keep reading for our top 10 reasons that we love our besties!

1. You text obsess.

Who else could you spend hours crafting the *perfect* message with?! While other friends might not have the patience to discuss emoji choice at length, your best friend does it with a smile.

2. You pick up where you left off with no notice.

Even if a conversation ended hours, days, or even years ago, you can always start talking about basically anything and instead of being confused or getting annoyed, your BFF would know exactly what you’re talking about — kind of like mind reading, but for people who’ve spent a lot of time together.

3. You eat ice cream for dinner.

Or French fries, Doritos, or any other food that’s not exactly a whole, nutritious meal. The best part? You know you can do this around them without judgment, even if you complain about feeling full/queasy/bloated afterward.

These 10 tech ETFs are flying under the radar

$

B-2 stealth bomber

Literally dozens of exchange-traded funds offer investors a host of ways to invest in the tech sector. However, the mainstream conversation is usually limited to a select few, such as the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund or the iShares U.S. Technology ETF. There's nothing wrong with these ETFs – they offer cheap, broad-based tech exposure. But investors and even traders looking for more tactical plays on specific industries within the technology space have several lesser-ballyhooed options at their disposal.

PureFunds ISE Cyber Security ETF

The HACK ETF of cybersecurity stocks is probably the most well-known of these lesser known tech funds, if only because its name pops up every time a major cybersecurity breach or virus outbreak makes the rounds. For instance, HACK jumped more than 3 percent in a single day after the WannaCry outbreak torched computers worldwide. PureFunds' ETF invests in both pure-play cybersecurity stocks such as FireEye and Imperva, as well as indirect plays such as Cisco Systems and Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp. that offer cybersecurity solutions as part of a broader array of services and products.

Expenses: 0.6 percent, or $60 per $10,000 invested annually

Global X FinTech ETF

Global X's FinTech ETF is a collection of companies that are either disrupting banks, insurers and other financial institutions – or helping those institutions fight back with their own technological products. The fund includes some names that you'd expect, such as PayPal Holdings and Square, which provide payment and processing solutions, as well as online lending exchange LendingTree. But it also includes old-guard fintech firms such as First Data Corp., which handles nearly half of America's credit and debit transactions. FINX actually encompasses a wide array of businesses, but most of them will be lifted by an increasingly cashless and tech-savvy society.

Gaming may be shifting from console base to more mobile-based, but it's an evolving and growing field – not a dying one. Technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality promise to both grow this area and blur gaming with education and other fields, and that's a boon for GAMR. This ETF holds game developers like Activision Blizzard and China's Chanyou.com, but also retailers such as GameStop Corp. and even red-hot chipmakers such as Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia Corp. The result is a fund that has clobbered XLK since early 2016 inception, 56 percent to 31 percent.

7 things you should know before taking your family on a cruise

cruiseThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Cruises are a great vacation for families, though it can be difficult and there are some things you need to know before you leave.
  • Some cruise lines offer for kids to sail for free. There are also teen and kids club where your kids can hangout while you get a quick break.

A cruise is a great vacation for couples, but it’s also a fantastic option for families, as the same great value proposition applies to multiple generations. Plus, what parent wouldn’t appreciate the convenience of unpacking their family once and having their hotel (or ship, in this case) travel to several destinations with plenty of food and entertainment at their beck and call? That said, here are some things you should know before taking a cruise with the whole brood.

1. Some kids of a certain age may not be permitted onboard.

Before progressing too far ahead in planning, it’s worth noting that not all children will be allowed onboard. There are even limitations for pregnant women joining the cruise, if they are too far along. (Generally, if you are at week 24, it's best to verify with the cruise line.) Some cruises don't allow babies younger than six to 12 months, while others have a no kids policy altogether, in order to maintain a certain decorum. Viking Ocean Cruises is one such line that only permits adults, but the bulk of the industry is very family-friendly.

2. Children can occasionally sail for free.

Some cruise lines offer incentives for children to sail entirely for free (with a stay in the same stateroom as their parents). Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is one that always offers this perk to kids under 12, with Cunard following suit as well. Meanwhile, Crystal Cruises and MSC Cruises extend the kid freebies on select cruises, and brands like Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International occasionally offer complimentary third and fourth guests regardless of age as well. In other cases, discounts may be available to extra passengers. That said, always keep an eye out for cruise line specials indicating any such offers.

3. Gratuities aren’t usually expected from the youngest in your party.

Another topic to be mindful of is gratuities. While many cruise lines do tack on a daily service charge per person, some do not require it of those under 2 or 3 years of age. Policies tend to change, however, so be sure to verify with your specific brand to be sure.

3 reasons Disney World attendance will bounce back in 2017

Disney had a rough year wooing theme-park visitors last year. The media giant doesn't typically offer up annual theme-park numbers, but industry tracker Themed Entertainment Association has been offering up its estimates for years -- and on Thursday, it put out some bleak numbers for the House of Mouse.

All four of Disney World's theme parks, and even its two water parks, suffered slight declines in 2016. None of the six Florida parks experienced a decline worse than 0.8%, and the setback really isn't a surprise. Disney detailed how Disney World attendance declined in three of the four quarters during the 2016 calendar year as the past few quarters played out.

Declines are rare for Disney -- and potentially problematic since it keeps adding more hotel rooms and timeshare rentals to its massive resort. I already went over how Disney, by taking its brand for granted, is letting its biggest rival catch up. Let's go over why turnstile clicks won't be declining for a second straight year at Disney.

1. Pandora changes everything

Disney officially opened Pandora -- The World of Avatar last weekend, and while there were concerns about the relevance of the dated and non-Disney-owned Avatar franchise, there's been no shortage at Disney's Animal Kingdom to check it out this week. The crowds will continue well into the summer -- and beyond.

The 12-acre expansion will transform Disney World's third most popular park into an all-day and all-night destination. Disney's Animal Kingdom used to routinely close at sunset, but now its operating hours have bumped up to an 11 p.m. close, with Disney resort guests able to stay an extra two hours. The only Disney park that used to close early on New Year's Eve has grown up, and all of the praise and attention that Pandora is generating will draw record crowds to its resort this year.

2. Don't snooze on Toy Story Land

No one's going to deny that Star Wars Land -- set to open in 2019 -- will be gargantuan. It's Disney's iPhone 8, and I'm not even including it in this article because its dramatic impact goes without saying. However, Disney is quietly building Toy Story Land right next to Star Wars Land.

There's no reason why it won't be ready before Star Wars Land, even if Disney hasn't announced an official opening date for the new Pixar-themed experience. My theory is that Disney's holding back on announcing the early arrival of Toy Story Land so it doesn't get in the way of tourists planning visits this summer to check out Pandora.

Disney needs something new in 2018, and wedging in the opening of Toy Story Land between the larger Pandora and Star Wars Land projects would be just enough to keep this year's momentum from fizzling out in 2018 as tourists start planning their 2019 trips.

3. Keeping greed in check

Disney let ticket pricing get ahead of itself last year. Switching to tiered pricing translated into single-day tickets going up as much as 18% for visits during peak summer and holiday seasons. Disney wasn't as greedy this February, when it added a milder annual increase to its one-day passes. It actually kept peak pricing intact, choosing, instead, to nudge prices higher for its two cheaper tiers by 2% to 5%.

It's unlikely that Disney will remain modest with its pricing approach when Star Wars Land opens in 2019, and it's also possible that it may let Pandora's big opening get to its head when next February's price hike rolls around. We'll see how it all plays out, but Disney learned a painful lesson about pricing elasticity last year. It's not going to forget the attendance drop of 2016 as it bounces back in 2017.

A crucial stock market signal just got its most bullish reading of the year

running of the bull

US stocks may be hovering near record levels, but investors don't seem to be particularly worried about protecting the plentiful gains they've enjoyed.

At least that's the signal being sent by the options market, which is more unhedged on the S&P 500 than at any point this year.

The CBOE Equity Put/Call Ratio fell to 0.51 on Monday, the lowest since December 8, and 20% below the measure's current bull market average. A low reading implies that traders are making a small number of bearish bets, relative to wagers on an increase.

But while this gauge of investor worry is at a six-month low, it wasn't always so subdued. The ratio sat close to 1.0 at a five-month high as recently as mid-April.

cboe equity put call v2

So what conditions have recently shaped up to support the bullishness — or perhaps more accurately, lack of bearishness — being seen in the stock market right now?

Here's a breakdown of five themes supporting investor positivity, and suggesting that US stocks have further to run:

The breadth of stock market gains has been wide enough to allay concerns that indexes are being pushed higher by just a smaller number of companies.

While technology stocks — most notably the FANG group of Facebook, Apple, Netflix and Google — have gotten a great deal of attention for pushing stocks higher, the wider market has also been pulling its weight.

In fact, participation in the ongoing equity rally is broadening, as shown by the equal-weight S&P 500 index recently breaking out of a narrow three-month range, says Morgan Stanley, which thinks tech is getting too much credit.

"While performance from this group of stocks has been exceptional, they are not the only outperformers," equity strategists led by Michael J. Wilson wrote in a client note. "Outside this group, there has been ample opportunity for positive returns both across US sectors and globally."

Even the FANG-dominated tech sector itself is seeing more widespread strength. Roughly 45 stocks in the S&P 500 Information Technology index are sitting at 52-week highs, the most since at least 2012, according to data compiled by Strategas Research Partners.

Markets worldwide are being propped up by robust cash holdings that are at their highest in almost three decades.

Underpinning gains in both stocks and bonds is $5 trillion of capital that is sitting on the sidelines and serving as a reservoir for buying on weakness.

"This excess cash acts as a backstop for financial assets, both bonds and equities, because any correction is quickly reversed by investors deploying their excess cash to buy the dip," Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, the managing director of global market strategy at JPMorgan, wrote in a client note.

While the $5 trillion is roughly half of what it was before the US presidential election — a period that has seen the S&P 500 surge by 14% — the outstanding cash is still close to a record and well above the average level seen since 1990, according to JPMorgan data.

Consumer sentiment has been elevated for a prolonged period, something that's historically unlocked massive gains for stocks.

We're about halfway into such a high-confidence period, following recent University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index data that kept the trend intact.

Sentiment has been this high for this long on just five other occasions since 1978, according to data compiled by Morgan Stanley. The S&P 500 saw a median return of 21% in the one year following each positive reading and a 42% gain over a two-year period, according to the firm's data.

The S&P 500's 17% rally since June 2016 is roughly in line with that history. And perhaps more important for market speculators, it signals that the index could have 21% to 25% left to climb over the next year.

"This suggests that an environment of elevated and stable consumer sentiment is conducive to a building of animal spirits," a group of Morgan Stanley equity strategists wrote in a client note on Tuesday. "This trend started last year, but still has momentum."

The most dangerous bridge in every US state

On June 7, President Trump will rally in Ohio for his $1 trillion infrastructure plan, a key campaign promise that's now part of his domestic agenda.

One of the plan's goals is to fix America's bridges, which received a C+ grade in the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2017 Infrastructure Report Card. (Overall, US infrastructure scored a D+, and the ASCE estimates the country needs to spend $4.5 trillion by 2025 to improve its roads, bridges, dams, airports, schools, and more.)

Every state has at least one structurally deficient bridge, which the US Department of Transportation (DOT) defines as when one or more key bridge components (e.g. the deck, superstructure, or substructure) is in "poor" condition. There are 185 million daily crossings on nearly 56,000 structurally deficient US bridges, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

Using 2017 data from the US Federal Highway Administration, Auto Insurance Centerfound the most structurally deficient bridge — based on the highest number of components in poor or worse condition — in each state and Washington, DC.

Check them out below.
