Antarctica's colossal new iceberg is doomed — here's what will happen next

Antarctica this week shed an iceberg of mind-boggling size from its Larsen C ice shelf.

The block of ice will likely be given the unceremonious name of A68 by the US National Ice Center, whose abbreviations denote both an iceberg's location and order of discovery.

Iceberg A68 now begins a long journey into the Southern Ocean and toward its doom: as liquid in Earth's vast and complex system of water.

Here's how scientists discovered the giant iceberg, how it calved, and how it will eventually die — and be reborn.

In 2015, glaciologist Daniela Jansen discovered a growing crack in Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf, which was then the fourth-largest ice shelf on the continent. The shelf is hundreds of years old, maybe more.

Ice shelves like Larsen C, and their icebergs, come from snow that's covered Antarctica over thousands of years and compacted into ice. In many places, the ice is a mile thick down to bedrock.

But the ice doesn't sit there. Gravity tirelessly pulls it toward the sea, where it floats on the water to form gigantic ice shelves.

11 jobs to avoid if you prefer to work alone

upset sad man crowd coworkers

We can't all be social butterflies.

In fact, some people thrive in solitude.

That's why people who prefer to work alone — or mostly alone, at least — ought to be careful about what occupations they set out to take.

We checked out the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database that compiles detailed information on hundreds of jobs, and looked at salary data on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' website to find positions that place an emphasis on interacting and socializing with others.

O*NET ranks how important "providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, email, or in person" is in any job, assigning each a "communicating with supervisors, peers, or subordinates importance level" between 1 and 100, where a higher score indicates more communication skills are required.

Here are 11 positions with a communication importance level of 93 or higher, indicating they aren't ideal for people who prefer to work alone:

9 things we get wrong about French women

$

Woman Paris

People around the world are obsessed with French culture and often glamorize French women.

Americans especially idealize almost everything about French women, from their alleged inability to age to their universally flawless style, so it can be hard to know which stereotypes are actually true.

INSIDER spoke with Piu Marie Eatwell, the author of the myth-busting books, "They Eat Horses, Don't They? The Truth About The Frenchand "F Is for France: A Curious Cabinet of French Wonders," to separate the facts from the fiction.

Turns out, we are getting all of these things wrong.

French women don’t get fat.

This sweeping generalization is false, according to Eatwell. Even though obesity rates in France are lower than those in America, these statistics mask regional differences in terms of weight, she said.

She added that Americans' perceptions of French women are skewed by the places we visit.

“Foreigners tend to visit places like Paris — and hang out in the most upscale and fashionable parts of the city — and therefore come back with the impression that all French women are slim,” Eatwell told INSIDER.

However, this is a misleading representation of France as a whole.

"Women in Paris are much more likely to be slim than in the region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais," she said. According to the Institut Pasteur de Lille, 20.5% of the population in Nord-Pas-de-Calais is overweight and obese, which is 6% higher than the national average.

They don't diet.

"While it is true that French women are less likely to follow the latest faddish diet regimes than American women, they are constantly aware of the need to 'pay attention' to their figures, and to keep slim," the author said. "A very common saying amongst French women is 'il faut souffrir pour être belle,' which means 'you have to suffer to be beautiful.'"

This typically involves following a balanced diet and indulging in moderation, according to Eatwell.

French women are rude.

Eatwell attributes this false stereotype to the Parisian women that foreign travelers meet when they visit the city.

The author compared Parisian women to New York City women, as they are both busy city-dwellers who are not representative of a whole country.

"Out in the provinces, people are often charming.  However, the impression of rudeness is also due to the fact that the French generally are quite reserved and aloof," Eatwell said.

Eatwell also referenced psychologist Kurt Lewin's theory that cultures can be divided into "coconuts" and "peaches."

"The French, along with the Russians and Germans, are 'coconut' cultures. They are 'hard' on the outside. They rarely smile at strangers, do not easily engage in conversations, and may look nor friendly or even aggressive first," she said. "However, if you manage to break through their hard outer shell, they tend to become close loyal friends who will accept you as family."

"The USA and Japan, on the other hand, are examples of ‘peach’ cultures," she said. "Americans and Japanese are ‘soft’ on the outside. They are very friendly to people they just met. However, once you get past the initial friendliness, you see the real private self is protected by a hard shell of the pit."

These are the best and worst ice creams for your diet

$

woman eating ice cream

The INSIDER Summary:

  • INSIDER investigated the best and worst brands of ice cream for your diet.
  • We analyzed the calorie count, sugar, and fat content of classic flavors from eight major brands.
  • For example, if you're watching your weight, reach for Breyers mint chocolate chip, instead of Häagen-Dazs of the same flavor.

When you purchase ice cream from your friendly neighborhood freezer aisle, you know you're going for an indulgent treat. And while there are new-fangled healthy frozen desserts from Halo Top and Breyers, there is a way to indulge in your favorite "normal" ice cream while being smart about it.

INSIDER analyzed the nutrition facts of classic flavors from eight major ice cream brands to come up with the best and worst options your money can buy.

Below, we compare the healthiest and least healthy versions of classic ice cream flavors from Ben & Jerry's, Blue Bell, Blue Bunny, Edy's, Häagen-Dazs, Talenti, and Turkey Hill. From chocolate chip cookie dough to classic vanilla, we break down the calorie, sugar, and fat contents of each serving (1/2 cup) so you can make smart choices that won't derail your diet.

Some of the most interesting takeaways from our small study was that even though (unsurprisingly) the more indulgent brands had the most fat content (like Ben & Jerry's), certain ice cream products that taste rich aren't necessarily as bad as we thought (like Blue Bunny). Also, even though Breyers had some of the healthiest products, their cartons are labeled as "frozen dairy desserts" instead of ice cream.

Keep scrolling to see every classic flavor's healthiest and least healthy option.

Breyers Butter Pecan and Häagen-Dazs Butter Pecan

Best: Breyers Butter Pecan frozen dairy dessert — 140 calories, 10% saturated fat, 12 grams of sugar

Worst: Häagen-Dazs Butter Pecan ice cream — 300 calories, 50% saturated fat, 17 grams of sugar

Blue Bunny Homemade Chocolate and Häagen-Dazs Chocolate

Best: Blue Bunny Premium Homemade Chocolate ice cream — 130 calories, 20% saturated fat, 15 grams of sugar

Worst: Häagen-Dazs Chocolate ice cream — 260 calories, 50% saturated fat, 19 grams of sugar

Breyers Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Best: Breyers Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough frozen dairy dessert — 150 calories, 15% saturated fat, 16 grams of sugar

Worst: Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream — 280 calories, 45% saturated fat, 25 grams of sugar

Château de la Barben

A historic château in Aix en Provence is now up for sale — and if you have a spare $17 million, it can be yours.

The castle, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, was previously owned by the French royal family and is now on the market with Sotheby's International RealtyBloomberg reported.

The current owners, Ghislaine Pillivuyt and her husband, Bertrand, inherited the property in 2006 and have been running it as a family business — opening the house and garden to the public, using it as a wedding venue, and running a bed and breakfast there.

Take a look around:

It's located in Aix-En-Provence, one of the most picturesque areas in the South of France.

The earliest records of the castle date back to 1064, when it was owned by monks. It subsequently changed hands several times and was at different points owned by a medieval lord and even the French royal family. In 1474 it was sold to the De Forbin family, who kept possession of it for 500 years.

7 of the filthiest things you touch all the time

$

hand washing

One of the first things we learn as kids is that it's important to wash our hands.

Handwashing helps prevent disease spread. It can keep an office running instead of shutting it down due to a viral illness.

It's especially important to wash your hands if you are interacting with newborn children or potentially vulnerable elderly adults.

But we don't always appreciate the reason why handwashing is so important: we touch a shocking number of filthy surfaces every single day.

Here are some of the most surprisingly dirty things we come into contact with on a regular basis.

SEE ALSO: Drinking more coffee is associated with a longer life, according to new research

Your smartphone:

Most of us touch our phones dozens of times a day, at minimum, reaching for them at just about any quiet moment. But aside from the occasional T-shirt swipe, we rarely clean these devices.

That's unfortunate, according to Philip Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine.

It's common to find bacteria and viruses from skin, your respiratory tract, and from fecal matter on cell phones. Some of the pathogens found include E. coliMRSA, and Streptococcus.

"If you’re not cleaning your phone, you should," Tierno told Business Insider. A microfiber cloth will remove most (though not all) bacteria. There are other recommended cleaning products that can get the job done too.

The kitchen sponge:

It turns out that the thing you use to wash your dishes is teeming with bacteria.

In fact, many microbiologists identify it as the dirtiest single item in your household (far, far dirtier than your toilet seat).

Sponges, which are often warm, wet, and have traces of food on them, are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria. One NSF (formerly, the National Sanitation Foundation) study found that more than 75% of sponges were contaminated with coliform bacteria, which indicates fecal contamination and from the same family as Salmonella and E. coli. Campylobacter, the biggest cause of foodborne illness in the US, is also commonly found on sponges.

Tierno recommends using bleach to clean your sponge.

That dish towel you just used to dry your hands:

Knowing that your sponge is dirty, you might be inclined to wash your hands after doing the dishes. That's wise!

But unfortunately, reaching to grab the dish towel that you keep by the sink might undo some of the good you did by washing your hands in the first place. Dish towels frequently have the same issues as sponges, since they're also damp, warm, and come into contact with food particles.

One study found E coli. on more than 25% of dish towels, putting them firmly into competition with sponges. Wash them after two days of use.

On Thursday, Jaguar unveiled the second SUV in the English brand's storied history. The all-new E-PACE is a follow up to Jaguar's wildly successful F-PACE crossover SUV that went on sale in 2016.

The car made its debut at a ceremony in London's ExCeL Centre where one of the cars showed off its capabilities by performing a barrel roll inside the show hall.

The Jaguar E-PACE is expected to allow Jaguar to better capitalize on the SUV craze that has swept across the automotive landscape. As a subcompact offering, the E-PACE allows Jaguar to reach buyers for whom the pricier F-PACE may be out of reach.

The all-new E-PACE arrives in US showrooms in early 2018 with a starting price of $38,600.

The summer camp for billionaires, which just kicked off in Sun Valley, has yielded some blockbuster deals over the years

$

Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, Jeff Bewkes, chief executive officer of Time Warner, and Eddy Cue, senior vice president of internet software and services for AppleThe so-called summer camp for billionaires kicks off this week, as tech and entertainment industry moguls convene in Sun Valley, Idaho for the annual Allen & Co conference.

Among those in attendance at this year’s gathering are Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Disney CEO Bob Iger, and Reid Hoffman, the cofounder of LinkedIn, which was acquired by Microsoft for $26.2 billion in June 0f 2016.

The event features several days of talks about business and the economy.

But the real action comes in the meetings, power lunches, and general chit-chat the moguls engage in between the formal sessions, which often provide the foundation to mega deals. These deals usually don’t materialize until weeks or months later, which is why an army of reporters armed with telephoto lenses stalk the area, diligently snapping pics of what could be the next blockbuster deal.

Often the photos prove nothing more than the fact that Executive A had lunch with Executive B. But with so many high-powered execs in attendance (not to mention the fact the event is hosted by an investment bank eager to broker big corporate marriages that pay big fees), it’s inevitable that some of these encounters lead to deals.

This year's event has plenty of interesting storylines. Jack Dorsey is at the event, as speculation swirls that this might finally be the year Twitter, the company he leads as CEO, finds a buyer. Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield is also there along with Amazon head Jeff Bezos, who is reportedlyinterested in acquiring the messaging service.

Here's a recap of some of the biggest deals that have been hatched at the conference over the years.

SEE ALSO: Millionaires, billionaires, and the big names in tech and media swarm to Sun Valley, Idaho, for Allen & Co.'s mogul fest

Yahoo/Verizon

Verizon closed a deal to buy Yahoo for $4.5 billion earlier this summer, and morphed into Oath, a combination of Verizon partner AOL and Yahoo that encompasses 50 media and technology brands.

During 2014's event, reporters spotted then Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and AOL CEO Tim Armstrong having a "deep conversation" in the resort's bar. They almost shut down the place that night their discussion was so intense, and speculation began to swirl that a deal was being hammered out.

It's hard to say whether that conversation actually revolved around a future deal.

AOL/Verizon

The seeds to one of 2015’s most high-profile acquisitions were planted in July 2014 in Sun Valley.

It was there that AOL CEO Tim Armstrong and Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam had lunch together and started talking about “the way the world was going.”

Those discussions progressed over the fall, culminating with the May announcement that AOL was selling to Verizon for $4.4 billion. The combination could help telecommunications giant Verizon become a bigger player in mobile and video advertising.

As for AOL, hopefully this deal will turn out better than the last big combination it sketched out at Sun Valley: the ill-fated 1999 merger with Time Warner.

Comcast/NBC Universal

Cable company Comcast morphed into a media goliath in 2011 when it acquired a majority stake in entertainment company NBC Universal.

The deal involved months of negotiations but a key moment occurred during a secret meeting at a condo near the ninth hole of a Sun Valley golf course in 2009. According to a report in the New York Times, Jeff Immelt, the CEO of GE (which owned NBC at the time), met with Comcast COO Steve Burke and Comcast’s 89-year-old founder Ralph Roberts.

Immelt had already met with Roberts' son Brian, who was the CEO of Comcast, but he wanted to hear from the elder Roberts as well. The secret rendezvous required that Immelt dodge not only the gaggle of reporters at the event, but even his own colleague, NBC CEO Jeff Zucker, who was also at the conference but was not privy to the deal talks.
