Girl Scouts can earn a bunch of new badges by building and programming robots

D_R_WhatRobotsDo_badge_highres

Pretty soon, the Girl Scouts may be as well known for prepping girls for careers in robotics and software coding as it is for its cookies.

The American youth organization is expanding its STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — program. Soon the organization's 1.8 million scouts will be able to earn badges in robotics, coding, engineering, and cybersecurity.

"We've seen girls being users of technology but not necessarily programmers, and robotics is a great way to learn how to code," said Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of the Girl Scouts. "It lets girls have a fun experience with friends while learning a skill."

The organization will unveil 23 new badges on Tuesday. They'll range in scope and skill level, from the Daisy-level "What Robots Do" to the Junior-level "Programming Robots." The Girl Scouts plans to unveil 18 more badges, all focused on cybersecurity, between now and 2019.

Acevedo, an engineer herself, said her experience building a rocket while in Girl Scouts inspired her to pursue a career in tech. She spent a long time in the industry, including stints at NASA, Apple, IBM, and Dell.

Now, as CEO of the Girl Scouts, she gets to help design and choose programs she hopes will work in the same way, inspiring girls to choose STEM careers.

"[These girls] want to be hackers. They want to protect against cybersecurity and cyberterrorism. They want to do that kind of coding," Acevedo said. "If you think about it, that's solving a problem in their community — and that's the core of what we do at Girl Scouts."

While technically you have to be a child to participate in the Girl Scouts, anyone can enjoy a slideshow. Here are some of the new badges in the collection and what scouts have to do to earn them.

What Robots Do

This Daisy-level badge helps kindergartners and first-graders understand a concept that most adults haven't full grasped: what robots are and how they are used.

The Daisies also learn about engineers and what jobs may lie in their futures.

How Robots Move

This badge is where the computer programming begins. The Daisies are taught about computational thinking and algorithms. They also learn a core concept about robots: they work by following instructions.

Design a Robot

To earn this badge, Daisies must build a robot prototype. The goal is to design something that can fix an everyday problem, through a mix of gears, levels, and pulleys.

Walmart has been tracking shoppers' repeat purchases with a new tool called "easy reorder," and it reveals a lot about which brands its customers love most.

The "easy reorder" tool tracks everything shoppers buy more than once in its stores and online, and logs those items in a list.

The list, which customers can access from a computer or mobile device, is meant to make it easy for people to reorder past purchases.

"I have over 150 items that are in my recorder list," says Jordan Sweetnam, vice president of product and customer experience for Walmart e-commerce. "I think of it as time management in my household with two kids. Everything is two touches away."

Walmart rolled out the tool in March, and since then, it has been tracking shoppers' most reordered items from dish soap to diapers.

Here's a list of Walmart shoppers' most reordered items:

There's so much death, and so many characters, that it's certainly a possibility — even for someone who has been paying close attention.

It can also get hard to keep track of who's related to whom, so it also helps to keep track of where loyalties lie.

To help you with both of these problems, here's a handy guide to the life status of every member of the major noble houses in Westeros.

Amazon is called "The Everything Store" for good reason. We use it for everything. Thanks to Amazon Prime, whatever we order, we never have to wait longer than two days for it to arrive at our door. Sometimes our items even show up the same day.

But with great purchasing power comes some unusual choices. I asked my Business Insider colleagues to share the best things they’ve bought on a whim using Amazon Prime, and I got some interesting responses.

Some are practical (hangers) while some are nostalgic (a box of Rice Krispies Treats Cereal).

It was another huge quarter for Google's parent company Alphabet.

With over $26 billion in revenue, that record-breaking $2.7 billion EU fine seemed like a drop in the bucket.

But the stock still dipped in after-hours trading following Monday's earnings report due to concerns over Google's rising traffic acquisition costs (TAC) as more users perform searches on mobile devices.

The stock was down about 2% early Tuesday.

Still, analysts remain bullish on Alphabet's future. Here's a roundup of what everyone is saying following Alphabet's latest earnings report.

SEE ALSO: Alphabet's full Q2 earnings results

Baird: BULLISH

Rating: Outperform

Price target: $1,100

Comment: "While TAC continues to increase with the shift toward mobile platforms and programmatic advertising channels, we note that expenses appear to be under control, even as management commits resources to newer growth opportunities..."

Barclays: BULLISH

Rating: Overweight

Price target: $1,060

Comment: "Google reported solid results with revenue & EPS 2% and 14% above consensus, but a tad shy of the heightened buyside expectations. The mix shift to faster-growing low- margin businesses, and the likely decelerating growth in desktop search (the primary profit pool) is challenging for Google to manage, hence we expect margins to continue to contract, but OI dollars & EPS to grow 15%-20% for the foreseeable future. "

William Blair: BULLISH

Rating: Outperform

Comment: "Despite investors likely focusing on declining margins year-over-year, we believe that share price appreciation should at least match EBITDA growth (we estimate 20% growth in fiscal 2018) going forward. Moreover, growth in YouTube and search remains strong, and incremental commentary on Google Cloud is encouraging."

RANKED: Super-rich professions the British public think deserve their wealth the least

mark zuckerberg

Economic inequality is one of the biggest issues in society today.

For years a narrative of the 1% vs the 99%, criticism of tax avoidance, and the polarisation of the employment and property markets has focused criticism on whether wealthy people deserve the money they make.

But, according to a survey published by the new website UnHerd, the public judges the rich very differently depending on how they came by their wealth.

Certain professions are seen as overwhelmingly deserving of every penny they make, while some are widely viewed as being unjustly wealthy.

Here's what the data, gathered by YouGov from 1,718 British people, says the public think about who deserves the money they make — and who doesn't.

Note: Not 100% of those questioned responded to every question.

10. Scientists and engineers

Only 5% of those surveyed thought that guys in lab coats don't deserve their salaries, with 85% responding that they are justly rewarded.

9. Inventors

Developing a brand new product or service also gets you a big thumbs-up from the British public. Only 6% of people think that inventing something doesn't entitle you to big money, while 79% backed them.

8. Manufacturing bosses

Heavy industry was an easy winner as well. Founding a manufacturing company and producing tangible things only got a thumbs-down from 11% of the public, with 78% saying that it's a fair way to get rich.

The best floor lamps you can buy

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

floor lamp 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • A good floor lamp can brighten up an entire room or direct light right where you need it most. We've picked out the best floor lamps you can buy to suit your needs. The Brightech SKY LED Torchiere Floor Lamp is our top pick because it offers versatility with dimmer settings, a lamp socket that pivots, and a few different finishes.

If you grew up at a time when floor lamps were popular, you probably have a few memories of them. You almost certainly knocked one over at some point by running through the house or – even worse – playing ball in the house. Or if you were lucky enough to have a floor lamp with a three-way bulb, you could spend hours entertaining yourself with the bright/brighter/brightest settings. Admittedly, I may not have had the most exciting childhood.

You may not have thought much about floor lamps lately. Or maybe that 100-year grounding your parents gave you after breaking the lamp as a kid technically remains in place, so you have a mental block about floor lamps. But modern floor lamps offer different and contemporary designs versus their counterparts from a few decades ago. Newer lamps may use LED lighting, which provides a pleasing type of lighting that’s also cost effective and efficient.

How to choose a floor lamp

Selecting a floor lamp becomes an easier process if you understand how you want to use it. Floor lamps come in many different designs and use different types of lighting.

  • Height: Do you want the lamp to provide task lighting for someone sitting on the couch? Or are you looking to light up an area of the room? Do you have tall ceilings? All of these considerations can help you select the height of floor lamp you’ll want to purchase. For example, as Homeclick says, a short lamp doesn’t look great in a room with high ceilings.
  • Base: The base of the floor lamp plays a role in the sturdiness of the lamp. A lamp with a wide base will be more difficult to tip over than one with a small base. Lamp bases are available in wood, glass, ceramic, or metal.
  • Finish: The finish on the lamp usually carries through the pole, sockets, and base. Common finishes for floor lamps include antique bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, and satin nickel, according to Lowe’s.
  • Lamp shade: Although some modern style floor lamps don’t make use of lamp shades, you can add color and style to the lamp with a custom lampshade, as Pooky explains. The lamp shade also cuts down on the intensity of the light, as it shades your eyes from the light bulb. Different materials will allow different intensities of light to be visible through the lamp shade.

Designs of floor lamps

Floor lamps are about more than just the type of lighting they provide. Floor lamps are about style, too. The lamp you choose contributes to the décor of your room. Here are the main designs you can choose from as explained by LampsUSA, eBay, and Decorated Life.

  • Classic/Console: The classic or console floor lamp has a single fixture directly above the pole, and it’s the most common type of floor lamp. This type of floor lamp provides accent lighting if a lampshade is attached.
  • Arch/Adjustable: An arch or adjustable style of floor lamp has a curved pole that allows you to direct the light to a specific area. For example, you might place the arch floor lamp behind a chair and then have the fixtures of the arch hang directly over the chair, providing a directed light source. Some arch floor lamps allow you to adjust the positioning of the angle of the arch.
  • Tree: The tree style of floor lamp has a single pole that leads to several small branch poles, each of which has a light fixture attached to it. With some floor lamps, the branches of the tree lamp are adjustable.
  • Torchiere lighting: Torchiere lighting mimics overhead lighting by projecting the light from the lamp upward. The shade is shaped like bowl, which directs the light upward. It enhances the room’s ambient light.

We researched buyer reviews and expert opinions on floor lamps to find the best floor lamps you can buy online. We tried to select a number of different styles and types of floor lamps to suit most people's needs. Read on to learn more about our top picks. You should also consult our light bulb buying guide for tips on how to choose thr best bulbs for your new lamp.

Although the Brightech SKY LED Torchiere Floor Lamp is our best floor lamp pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Brayden Studio Utecht Tree Lamp, the Barnes and Ivy Florencio Antique Gold Lamp, the Trent Austin Design Kaibab Task Lamp, the Catalina 3-Way Étagère Lamp, the Artiva USA Micha Arched Lamp, the Toombs Column Floor Lamp, and the Ikea NOT Floor Uplight Floor Lamp.

The best floor lamp overall

Why you'll love it: If you want plenty of versatility in a floor lamp, the Brightech SKY LED Torchiere Floor Lamp offers four dimmer settings, a pivoting light source, and four different finishes.

The versatile Brightech SKY LED Torchiere Floor Lamp has four dimmer settings to provide the perfect mood lighting and adjust to your lighting needs as natural light dissipates. The torchiere design of the Brightech lamp aims the light upward, providing light that spreads through the room.

Even though the base of the SKY LED Torchiere floor lamp doesn’t look very big, it has a solid weight that keeps this tall lamp sturdily in place, according to Geek News Central. As Hooked To Books points out in its review, the small base and thin pole mean that the unit won’t occupy much space in your living room, either.

It's a simple, minimalist lamp that fits in anywhere. Brightech's lamp is also very practical and has smart design features that make it easy to place in your home. The Home Lights review highlights the SKY LED Torchiere Lamp's long cord, which runs longer than 7 feet to reach far away outlets.

One Amazon buyer liked this LED floor lamp so much he purchased two more for his home. Although this is a very popular model among Amazon reviewers, one Amazon reviewer reported problems with the power switch not working after a few days. If you run into problems, contact Amazon or the seller right away.

Additionally, the thin LED segment at the top of the lamp can pivot to an angle, allowing you to direct the extremely bright 30-watt LED light wherever it's needed. It’s available in four different finishes, black, brushed nickel, silver, and white.

Pros: Extremely bright torchiere style floor lamp, minimal design that doesn’t occupy much floor space, available in four finishes, offers four dimmer settings, head of lamp can slightly pivot to redirect light

Cons: Some customers report problems with power switch, doesn’t use a lampshade

Buy the Brightech SKY LED Torchiere Floor Lamp on Amazon for $79.90 to $109.99 (price varies based on color — originally $110.00)

The best tree style floor lamp

Why you'll love it: The Brayden Studio Utecht Tree Floor Lamp has a stylish and graceful look that’ll mesh with almost any décor, but it doesn't sacrifice usability or versatility.

The stylish Brayden Studio Utecht Tree Floor Lamp has a simple design that will look great in any room in your home. The thin stem of the Utecht floor lamp splits into three smaller branches that each hold a drum-style lampshade and a socket.

The lamp shades have a 12-inch diameter, and the lamp measures 74 inches tall. You can buy the lamp in two different finishes: antique bronze and brushed steel. One Wayfair buyer liked the stylish and graceful design of this floor lamp. Indeed, it's a simple and elegant lamp that'll add a touch of class to any room.

Another reviewer on Wayfair loved the ability to turn on one, two, or all three lights individually. Turning on only one of the three lights gives your room a nice soft light while having all three shining illuminates the entire room.

The Brayden Studio Utecht Tree Floor Lamp has an E27 bulb base, which allows for 100-watt incandescent bulbs or lower wattage CFL and LED bulbs. You can decide how bright or dim you want the lamp to be based on which bulbs you choose. For help with choosing a great light bulb for your lamp, check out our light bulb buying guide here.

As far as downsides go, there aren't many. A couple of buyers on Wayfair said the lamp’s assembly was difficult because of the lack of helpful directions, but you'll figure it out after a while, so it's no big deal.

Pros: Nice looking design, simple drum lamp shades provide a great look, four-way switch for turning on individual lamp sockets, two finishes available, allows up to 100 watts per each of the three sockets

Cons: Price is a little high, lamp may be difficult to assemble for some people

Buy the Brayden Studio Utecht Tree Floor Lamp on Wayfair for $149.99 (originally $230.00)

The best traditional floor lamp

Why you'll love it: It’s tough to beat the classy and traditional look of the Barnes and Ivy Florencio Antique Gold Floor Lamp, which offers a heavy, sturdy build quality and a torchiere style design.

If you have an image in your mind of what a traditional floor lamp should look like, there’s a good chance the Barnes and Ivy Florencio Antique Gold Floor Lamp matches the image in your head. This classy lamp makes use of an antique gold finish with black accents to look classy and traditional in any room.

The thick lamp pole and the heavy, ornate base provide a perfect look for a traditional décor. The top of the lamp contains a torchiere style light socket, which directs the light upward using a 5-inch height and 18-inch diameter amber glass shade.

The 72-inch lamp can accept incandescent light bulbs of up to 150 watts or lower wattage CFL or LED bulbs. For help with choosing a great light bulb for your lamp, check out our light bulb buying guide here.

The Floor Lamps review says the Florencio Antique Gold lamp is a good value versus similarly designed traditional floor lamps and praises the attractive design.

One Amazon buyer appreciated the sturdy build quality and feel of this Barnes and Ivy floor lamp, which weighs more than 40 pounds. You shouldn't have to worry about knocking this lamp over. Another Amazon reviewer liked the style of the Florencio floor lamp, even though it was more bright gold than the antique gold color they expected.

Pros: Ornate design on the base and near the light socket, antique gold and black finish looks stylish, torchiere light design aims light upward, up to 150-watt bulbs accepted, traditional design looks great

Cons: Extremely heavy floor lamp, high price, some customers say antique gold finish is more of a gold

Buy the Barnes and Ivy Florencio Antique Gold Torchiere Floor Lamp on Amazon for $299.99

The 23 best used cars for young drivers

$
0
0

Volkswagen VW Golf familyFor most young people and their parents, buying a first car is a major step.

One great option is to look at used cars, which can often be had for a fraction of the cost of brand-new models.

We came up with 23 used cars we think are the best for the young car buyer on a budget.

To make our list, we focused on cars that are available on the market right now for under $15,000. We looked for ones that are reliable, fun to drive, comfortable, attractive, economical, practical, and most of all, safe.

For safety, we checked out the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) moderate front overlap crash test ratings for the cars we selected. Prices are based on current values available from Autotrader.com and reflect the lowest price we think a decent example with fewer than 75,000 miles on the odometer may cost.

SEE ALSO: These are the 20 best-selling cars and trucks in America

2009-Present Honda Fit

Starting price: $8,000 and up

IIHS crash test rating: Good

Why buy it: The Honda Fit has been an unqualified success across the globe for the automaker. The Fit offers fun, versatility, and reliability in a compact package.

Honda's second generation Fit, sold from 2009 to 2012, is powered by the company's trusty 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 117. Since 2013, the third-gen Fit has been offered with a 130-horsepower, 4-cylinder unit.

2012-Present Ford Focus

Starting price: $8,000 and up

IIHS crash test rating: Good

Why buy it: Since its inception in 1998, the Focus has been a star performer for Ford. But for years, Ford's US and European division sold different cars under the "Focus" name — with the European version much better received. For 2012, the third-generation Ford unified the model and finally gave the US Focus customers the European car they'd been waiting for.

Power for Focus comes from a 2.0-liter, 160-horsepower, inline-4 cylinder engine. People looking for higher performance can opt for the critically acclaimed 252 hp Focus ST — though even used examples of the model may be pricey.

2005-Present Honda Civic

Starting price: $8,500 and up

IIHS crash test rating: Good

Why buy it: The Honda Civic is bulletproof. If properly maintained, the car can go for well over 250,000 miles without any issues.  However, at this price point, it shouldn't be hard to come across examples will far fewer than 100,000 miles on the odometer. As one of the most popular cars in the world, spares are easy to come by and repairs are relatively affordable.

Being popular means that there is large aftermarket support for the car, so kids can customize a Civic to their liking for not much money. Also, the sporty and practical Si hatchback from the early 2000s is now available for under $10,000. And since it was only available with a manual gearbox, it teaches a good lesson.

People are already replacing their desktop computers with smartglasses

$
0
0

In the tech industry, "dogfooding" is a common term that describes when companies make their employees use the software and hardware they make, so that bugs can be caught and everyday improvements can be dreamed up before the product ever hits the market.

Recently, the most powerful companies in Silicon Valley have shown significant interest in augmented reality, a technology that integrates computer graphics and software into the real world. Eventually, supporters say, when "AR" technology becomes advanced enough, a pair of smartglasses may be able to replace every screen you typically use, from your smartphone to your work computer.

But to get to that point, technologists are going to have to eat a lot of dogfood — they're going to have to actually replace their beloved computers and smartphones with AR headsets.

One Silicon Valley company is actually doing this right now. Meta is a startup making an AR headset, and it's asking its employees to put away their desktop computers and instead do their daily work inside the Meta 2 headset.

Although Meta's engineers rebelled at first, according to Bloomberg, the company's marketing, sales, and operations departments have provided a lot of useful feedback because of the experiment.

"I have not used any computing device except for my iPhone and Meta 2 for three weeks now," Meta VP Ryan Pamplin, the startup's evangelist, told Business Insider last month. "This is the end of my third week of being computer free."

"I also stream my Mac desktop in a virtual window that's floating in front of me, which is nice, because then I can use iMovie or Photoshop or any of the Mac apps I like," he continued. Pamplin said he likes to watch movies on the Meta 2 on flights.

Meta has raised over $73 million in venture funding from investors including Horizon Ventures, Lenovo, Tencent, and Banyan Capital. It's reportedly valued at over $300 million.

Meta Workspace 00015Meta's desktop-discarding experiment is possible because Meta has developed a piece of software for its headset it calls Workspace.

In Workspace, users can pop up several browser windows inside the headset — perhaps one to play a YouTube video and another to work on a document. Software exists to create and place virtual sticky notes, photos of your family, or even digital houseplants around your desk. Basically, you can create your own virtual dream office.

"In order to get good you have to dogfood," Pamplin said. "Ok, well, if you have to dogfood to be good, why is Meta the only ones doing it? And I think the answer is, we're the only ones that can."

I got to try a demo of Workspace last month in San Francisco in a bright, sun-filled room. Here's what it was like:

SEE ALSO: Mindblowing examples of the technology that makes Apple's CEO want to 'yell out and scream'

This is the Meta 2 headset. You can order a development kit for $949 now, although it might be a while before it's delivered — the company is aiming for "the end of the summer."

Order one from Meta here

And this is what it looks like on my head. During the demo, the Meta 2 headset was plugged into a gaming PC. Meta's big selling point is that it has a 90-degree "field of view," which basically means that the virtual objects are able to occupy a larger percentage of the display than competitors like Microsoft HoloLens. The sensors include a front-facing color camera, two monochrome sensors, and a six-axis gyroscope.

This is close to what I saw during my demo. This is Meta's workspace software. Each "object" on that shelf is a different app or feature you can play with.

The best electric toothbrushes you can buy

toothbrush 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • If you want clean teeth and healthy gums without breaking your budget, you can’t go wrong with the highly effective Oral-B Pro 1000 electric toothbrush.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You only need to brush and floss the teeth you want keep.” While the words are undeniably tongue-in-cheek, there’s considerable truth to them. Proper oral care, which includes twice-daily brushing and once-daily flossing, is critical if you want to hang onto your choppers well into old age.

Do you really need an electric toothbrush?

Most dentists agree that a properly wielded manual toothbrush can do nearly as good a job as an electric toothbrush. The problem, however, comes with the “properly wielded” part. Most people fail to brush the full recommended two minutes, don’t carefully work the brush around the entire set of teeth and the gum line, and don’t brush gently and yet with speed. By contrast, a good electric toothbrush:

  • Oscillates or strokes thousands – even tens of thousands – of times per minute, as compared to the typical 300 strokes per minute when brushing manually
  • Removes more plaque than a manual toothbrush
  • Has a signal or timer of some type to motivate longer brushing
  • Is easier for people with arthritis or other hand weaknesses to use
  • Is likelier to reduce gum disease than a manual toothbrush

We want you to keep your teeth healthy and strong for a lifetime. That’s why we’ve done the research to bring you five electric toothbrushes that we feel are the best choices for the most people. We visited the top consumer websites, listened to actual product owners, and considered advice from dentists and dental hygienists when making our decisions. So go ahead and break out your favorite toothpaste. Healthy, clean white teeth are on their way.

Although the Oral-B Pro 1000 is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Waterpik Complete Care Water Flosser and Sonic Toothbrush, the Philips Sonicare for Kids, the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000, and the Philips Sonicare 2 Series Plaque Control.

The best electric toothbrush overall

Why you'll love it: The Oral-B Pro 1000 is the best electric toothbrush because it's budget-friendly, highly effective, and compatible with a wide range of replacement brush heads.

The Oral-B Pro 1000 is a no-frills electric toothbrush, but it gets the job done, and it gets it done well. It comes with a CrossAction brush head that reaches into every nook and cranny between and within your teeth to scour away up to 300 percent more plaque than a manual toothbrush would remove.

If you prefer another type of brush head, however, there are plenty to choose from; the Oral-B Pro 1000 is compatible with nine different Oral-B heads, including whitening, sensitive, extra gum line cleaning, deep clean, orthodontics care, and floss action. Just twist and pull to switch out the brush head.

The toothbrush handle has an easily accessed on/off button, and the brush vibrates gently every 30 seconds to let you know it’s time to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth. The sections include the inside of upper teeth, outside of upper teeth, inside of lower teeth, and outside of lower teeth. Press too hard, and the toothbrush will stop rotating – overly vigorous tooth brushing is a major cause of gum irritation. When you let up the pressure, the brush will automatically begin to spin once again.

The Sweethome chose the Oral-B Pro 1000 as their top-pick electric toothbrush, and Health.com also selected this electric toothbrush as its number-one choice.

On Amazon, the Oral-B Pro 1000 is one of the best-selling electric toothbrushes, with nearly 5,500 reviews and an average of 4.4 stars. Buyers like the brush’s simplicity, its effectiveness, and its reasonable price. Many also appreciate being able to swap out the brush head for one that better suits their needs.

Expect to recharge the Oral-B Pro 1000 about once per week. You’ll see a flashing red light when the battery is getting low. The recharging base is very small, so there's no need to clear much counter space.

Pros: Great price, effective at removing plaque, many types of compatible brush heads

Cons: Not as fast or as powerful as some newer electric toothbrushes

Buy the Oral-B Pro 1000 on Amazon for $39.97

The best electric toothbrush that does it all

Why you'll love it: The Waterpik Complete Care Water Flosser and Sonic Toothbrush comes with a great electric toothbrush and a water flosser.

Regular flossing with string is effective, but water flossing gets the job done even more effectively — blasting between teeth, beneath the gum line, and into all the nooks and crannies of your back molars to remove sticky plaque, food bits, and bacteria. Waterpik has always been the top name in water flossers, but now the company has ingeniously combined a water flosser and an electric toothbrush in one convenient package. Just one cord to plug in and your toothbrush charges right on the water flosser’s stand.

You’ll get a Waterpik Sensonic Professional Toothbrush, which uses sonic technology to remove plaque from your gums and teeth. The brush has two speeds, a two-minute timer, and soft bristles that clean your teeth very effectively without irritating your gums. The kit includes a standard brush head and a compact brush head for precision cleaning.

The water flosser’s reservoir holds 90+ seconds-worth of water, and you can add a bit of mouthwash if you’d like for extra breath freshening. The flosser’s tip delivers a thin, powerful stream of water that painlessly and effectively blasts away plaque and debris not just from between your teeth, but also from beneath your gum line where string floss won’t reach. You can set the water pressure to your liking, and choose between five different types of tip.

Amazon buyers are very enthusiastic about the Waterpik Complete Care. It has more than 5,200 reviews and an average of 4.4 stars. While many users comment that it takes a bit of practice to learn how to use a water flosser without drenching your entire bathroom, most feel the device leaves their teeth and gums very healthy and clean.

A typical comment, “Best dental hygiene purchase I have ever made. My teeth look and feel better than ever. Cannot recommend this enough.”

On the downside, quite a few buyers say the water flosser is loud.

Pros: Doesn’t take up much counter space, superior to string floss, toothbrush is always charged and ready to go, reasonable price

Cons: Water flosser is loud, potential for getting your bathroom wet

Buy the Waterpik Complete Care Water Flosser and Sonic Toothbrush on Amazon for $70.05 (originally $99.99)

The best electric toothbrush for kids

Why you'll love it: Getting your children to brush properly twice per day can be a struggle, but with the fun Philips Sonicare for Kids, they might actually beg to brush their teeth.

Kids and good oral hygiene is typically not a natural combo. Most kids are either reluctant to brush or do a poor job at cleaning their teeth. The Philips Sonicare for Kids makes brushing fun, however, turning a routine task almost into a video game, thanks to the free Bluetooth-compatible app that encourages and rewards good brushing techniques.

Like all Sonicare toothbrushes, the kids’ brush uses patented sonic technology for up to 75% more effective removal of plaque and debris than a manual toothbrush. It has a built-in two-minute timer and alerts the child to switch quadrants every 30 seconds while brushing. There are two speed settings, and the brush comes with eight stickers to customize the handle.

But where the fun really starts is with the free app that not only teaches kids about the whys and hows of good oral hygiene, it also turns brushing into a game. Your child will get to adopt a “Sparkly,” a cute little creature that gives brushing tips while your child “brushes” the Sparkly’s teeth. The app also tracks performance, making it easy to reward good hygiene. Just set your smartphone or tablet where your child can watch while brushing.

With nearly 1,000 reviews on Amazon and an average of 4.6 stars, there are definitely a lot of happy parents and kids out there brushing with the Philips Sonicare for Kids. Over and over, buyers comment that their kids went from brushing-resistant to actually wanting to brush their teeth. Many state that their child’s dental appointments are much, much better since switching to the kid’s Sonicare.

Says one pleased parent, “My 2.5-year-old began brushing happily and thoroughly every night just so he can see his "Sparkly" monster get a present. He is so excited and he used to dread brushing.”

The Philips Sonicare for Kids is recommended for ages three and up if the child is using the brush on their own. Younger children should have assistance from mom or dad, however.

Pros: App makes brushing fun, brush head is sized for children’s mouths, very effective at removing plaque and debris from teeth and gum line

Cons: None to speak of, although your child will eventually outgrow the cutesy app

Buy the Philips Sonicare for Kids on Amazon for $34.95 (originally $49.99)

Take a tour of the world's best hotel, a 5-star resort built by fashion mogul Chris Burch on a remote Indonesian island

Nihiwatu

Nihi Sumba Island (formerly known as Nihiwatu) was voted the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure for the second year in a row.

The luxury island resort in Indonesia even beat the Brando, Obama's recent vacation spot

Nihi was created by Chris Burch, best known for founding or cofounding several internationally known retail brands — C. Wonder and Tory Burch — and investing in several others.

Burch, together with hotelier James McBride, bought a beach hostel on the Indonesian island of Sumba in 2012. The duo spent $30 million renovating the hostel, then reopened it as a five-star resort in 2015.

In an interview with Business Jet Traveler in 2015, Burch said, "I bought it for my children and as a piece of something that I hope we can preserve and give back to the community. When you're in a place where the palette is so beautiful, you can do things that you can't do in other places: build a spa under a waterfall, go to places where no others have been, have a butler in every room."

According to the Wall Street Journal, Burch splits his time between Miami, the Hamptons, and his resort in Indonesia. Nihi has 27 private villas, including Raja Mendaka, Burch's private home. That particular section has a main house and four additional villas, each with its own private plunge pool.

Nihi is on the west coast of Sumba, a remote Indonesian island.

The name means "mortar stone," and the beach was originally named after a rock formation on the tide.

In 2012, Chris Burch and hotelier friend James McBride bought what was then a beach hostel owned by a couple from New Jersey.

North Korea

With an authoritarian regime that lasted over seven decades, North Korea remains one of the most closed-off countries in the world.

It may soon become even more so as the Trump administration prepares to pass a ban on American travel to the country after North Korea detained a US student and returned him to his family in a coma with neurological trauma, which later took his life.

For the few visitors who made it to North Korea, the poverty, outdated infrastructure, and tight government control, largely shocked them.

But even in the strictest of government regimes, people still find ways to go through their lives. Here is how some North Koreans spent the last few days in July:

The 10 GOP senators who will decide the fate of the Republican healthcare bill

The GOP healthcare bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate as it goes up for a vote Tuesday.

The Senate is expected to vote on a motion to proceed that would bring up the healthcare bill that passed in the House. At that point, one of a number of proposed draft healthcare bills stands to be shaped into the legislation that will get voted on.

Even so, many Republican senators have not embraced the bill with open arms.

Some more conservative senators want to vote on a bill to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. Some moderates, on the other hand, think the bill to repeal and replace, the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), goes too far and want to keep some of the more popular parts of the ACA intact.

Here are the GOP senators who have shaped the fight over the Senate healthcare bill — and what they might still want to change.

SEE ALSO: John McCain has an aggressive kind of brain cancer that has a median survival rate of less than 15 months — here's everything we know

DON'T MISS: CBO: Under the latest Senate healthcare bill, deductibles could be more than some people earn

Dean Heller of Nevada

What he's said: Heller faces a tight reelection bid in 2018 in a state that recently passed a bill, which was eventually vetoed by the governor, to expand Medicaid access to everyone in Nevada. He opposed a previous version of the bill, but hasn't taken a definitive stance on more recent drafts.

What he wants: Heller took issue with the proposed phaseout of the Medicaid expansion and the funding growth-rate formula.

Susan Collins of Maine

What she's said: A week ago, Collins opposed a motion to proceed on a vote on the BCRA and the repeal-only bill. Since then, she hasn't appeared to change her mind. Throughout the process she has been critical of the BCRA and its changes to the Medicaid program.

Collins also isn't a fan of the approach to vote on a motion to proceed on the bill before knowing exactly which bill will be voted on. ""I don't think that's a good approach to facing the legislation that affects millions of people and one-sixth of our economy,"she said on Sunday

What she wants: While Collins' state has not expanded Medicaid, the slower growth caps for the program could be enough to push her away from the bill. Additionally, Collins opposes defunding Planned Parenthood, which the Senate bill would do for one year. Collins' term is up in 2020.

Rand Paul of Kentucky

What he's said: Paul was among the four senators that came out publicly against the BCRA in June, arguing that it did not deliver on its promise to repeal Obamacare. A bill to repeal the ACA is now on the table, and Paul supports that one, though he's still not in favor of the BCRA

What he wants: Paul wants to roll back much of the regulations set up by the ACA and eliminate much of the funding to provide insurance subsidies. He said during the legislation's drafting of the bill that he doesn't want to create "a new entitlement" by solidifying the tax credits into law under the plan. Basically he wants less of everything: funding, regulation, and taxes.

Cocktail at Blackbird bar

This week, the 11th annual Spirited Awards — essentially the Oscars of the drinks world — crowned New York City's BlackTail the Best New American Cocktail Bar.

While only less than a mile away from owners Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry's other award-winning sister barThe Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog, BlackTail's atmosphere and cocktail recipes are worlds apart. BlackTail transports you to 1920s Havana, serving up colorful, punchy, and, at times, fruity cocktails.

Last fall, we met with BlackTail's bar manager and cocktail aficionado, Jesse Vida, to get the full story behind this beautiful new bar at the very southern tip of Manhattan in Battery Park.

SEE ALSO: Here's the favorite drink of every US president

BlackTail is partially inspired by the Highball Express, a fleet of private planes that transported wealthy New Yorkers right off the Hudson River to Havana, Cuba, during Prohibition. The second they were over international waters, they could drink freely.

"We're telling the story of an American-style bar in Havana during Prohibition," Vida told Business Insider. "Havana became not only a place to go have fun, but a place to be seen."

From the decor to the menu, BlackTail pays homage to that time period, but with a modern twist. "We're putting a modern flair [on our cocktails] so we're using modern ingredients, and bringing the cocktails to what the palate level is now compared to what it was," he said.

Audi's new luxury sedan is a high-tech machine that should terrify BMW and Mercedes

Audi A8

Audi recently unveiled its new luxury sedan — and it should make BMW and Mercedes nervous.

The all-new Audi A8 will support level 3 autonomous driving, meaning the car can handle most scenarios without driver intervention.

The sedan takes a direct shot at BMW's 7-Series — the German automaker's luxury sedan that debuted in 2015 and supports autonomous functions like adaptive cruise control. The A8 will also attempt to rival Mercedes S-Class — the world's best-selling luxury sedan that also comes equipped with self-driving features.

Audi's luxury sedan has slipped behind the 7-Series and S-Class on global sales, but the automaker will aim to boost its outlook with the tech-savvy A8.

Scroll down for a closer look at the new luxury sedan:

The Audi A8 is the latest iteration in Audi's sedan line-up, which includes the A4 and A5. It will begin rolling out in 2018, but it's not expected to show up in US newsrooms until 2019.

First, some basics. Audi will offer three gasoline, two diesel, and one plug-in hybrid unit for the sedan. The gasoline and diesel options will feature mild hybrid tech to help improve mileage.

The focus on hybrid tech comes in the wake of an emissions scandal that has rocked Audi's parent company, Volkswagen. You can read more on the different engine options for the A8 here, but all are designed to get over 445 hp.

The A8 will come equipped with radar and ultrasonic sensors, a forward-facing camera, and laser scanner to support level 3 autonomy. Combined, the sensors will allow the A8 to drive in traffic on highways, even at slow speeds (37 mph).

We compared 7 travel-booking sites to show you what each is best at

travel sites main

Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars.

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights, hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars. Clicking restaurants will take you to OpenTable.

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile.

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

  • Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
  • Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices
  • Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer
  • Destination travel guides and articles

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

Book a trip with Booking.com

Expedia

Expedia offers booking for flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do.

Highlights:

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals.

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan.

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points.

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

Best for:

  • Hotel, flight, and car bundles
  • Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary
  • Reward points system

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Expedia

TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor offers booking for flights, hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and things to do.

Highlights:

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

Best for:

  • Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals)
  • Comparing deals across aggregators
  • Strong user-generated review community

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

amazon sweepstakes promo

You might not have heard of the latest service Amazon has built into its empire, but you'll likely be thankful it did.

Thanks to recent developments, you can now create your wedding registry right on Amazon, with more perks than you'd expect.

You’ll likely be buying most of your household items from Amazon in the future, and going right to the source is convenient and direct.

And if you want, you can browse through categories Amazon has created for newlyweds thanks to helpful insight from their giant network and millions of users.

The appeals of a large business aren't lost in the wedding preparations. For instance, here are the top 100 items Amazon Wedding Registry users have added to their registries. You can also explore Amazon editors' top picks or items that couples love, by brands you like or by designer boutiques like the MoMA, to name a few.

But what about all the things you can’t get from Amazon?

Not too surprisingly, Amazon was aware you might go off-roading from some nice dinnerware or something along those lines. So they included a Universal Registry capability. Basically, you download a little browser application here that turns the internet into your own personal mall. With it, you can add any item from other websites to your registry as well as get automatic price comparisons. The main point, though, is that you don’t just need to confine your registry to only Amazon, but you still reap the benefits of using Amazon’s Wedding Registry. Below, I’ll take you through those benefits.

Plus, with their Universal Registry capability, you can aggregate all the items you don't find on Amazon into one cohesive list — making that world's largest selection of items on Amazon even broader.

Below, I take you through all the benefits that come with an Amazon Wedding Registry, so you can deliberate for yourself.

DON'T MISS: 22 gifts you’re going to see on every couple’s wedding registry this year

The world's largest selection

Especially for modern couples, you might not be looking for all the same items you'd find on a wedding registry from 10 years ago. Sometimes you might want a camping stove to help you two get outdoors after you're married. For miscellaneous or unexpected items you'd still like to have on your wish list, Amazon is uniquely suited to you.

Plus, with their Universal Registry capability, you can aggregate all the items you don't find on Amazon into one big registry still — making that world's largest selection of items on Amazon even broader.

Personalize and share with your loved ones

Like any modern registry, you can upload a picture of you two together to personalize your list. Instead of leaving everything en masse for (perhaps distant) relatives to try to gauge what would be most useful, you can leave comments and set a priority for each item to help nudge them along.

If they're giving you a gift, they want you to like it — this feature helps remove the smoke and mirrors.

Once your personalized registry is finished, you can easily share it via email and social media.

Bonus gifts

What's better than one gift you paid for? Another that you didn't.

With the Amazon Wedding Registry's bonus gifts feature, you can cherry pick through a list of select vendors that will give you gifts when you register for items from them or when your guests make purchases. Some might not hold any interest for you, but there's no pressure to use them — it’s just a great added feature you can take advantage of if any of the vendors suits you and your needs.
