How Conor McGregor went from Dublin plumber to the king of combat sports

Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is one of the most dominant fighters alive.

A two-division champion in UFC, McGregor now finds himself as the king of combat sports, living a lavish life and getting ready for the biggest fight of his career — 12 rounds in a boxing ring against the undefeated Floyd "Money" Mayweather — and the likely nine-figure payday that will come with it.

But while McGregor is a natural to the superstar life, it wasn't something he was born into. Coming from a working-class family from the suburbs of Dublin, Ireland, McGregor found his way through childhood gyms, a stint as a plumber's apprentice, and eventual worldwide fame as the most Notorious fighter on the planet and the biggest name in the UFC.

Below we take a look a Conor McGregor's rise to the top of the world.

Conor McGregor was born on July 14, 1988 to his parents Tony and Mags. His parents claim he was born with clenched fists.

McGregor would spend his youth in Crumlin, a suburb of Dublin. Once his interest in Manchester United gave way to an interest in fighting, he would train in at the Crumlin Boxing Club.

In Dublin, McGregor would meet his now longtime coach John Kavanagh. After going into one of Kavanagh’s gyms in Dublin, McGregor beat up two of the best fighters there in a sparring session that he took a bit too seriously. Kavanagh responded by “pinning him and throwing heavy blows until Conor promised he was there for training and not for a street brawl.”

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

planners 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Whether you like monthly, weekly, or daily calendar options, a paper planner is an essential tool for keeping your life organized and moving forward. The best planner for most people is the Passion Planner with its classy design, great page layout, and inspirational guidance.

Self-improvement is a big business. Who doesn’t want to get thinner, fitter, richer, more successful — or just be happier? But to achieve all these things, you’ve got to get organized. Despite the fact that most of us have some form of electronic calendar on our phones or computers, many people still rely on their paper planning agenda to keep their lives running smoothly.

I’m one of those people. And while I do switch up the brand sometimes, I’m committed to using a planner that breaks down the calendar by the week. Seeing one day at a time — or the whole month — just doesn’t work for me.

Some people choose to start fresh with a new planner in January. Others — particularly college students, teachers, and parents — often opt for a 16-month calendar that starts in August or September.

These days, planners usually come with much more than just calendars. In fact, many of the best-selling planners promise to provide you with a whole new lifestyle with features that help you set goals, get inspired, make plans, and keep track of your progress.

How to pick the right planner

So what should you think about before committing to buying a planner? The folks at HGTV suggest you ask yourself the following questions:

  • Will you carry your planner around, or will it simply sit on your desk? If you're carrying your planner with you, you’ll need to think about how much it weighs.
  • Do you like to customize your planners, or do you prefer one that is well-suited to your needs that you can leave as is?
  • Do you prefer a horizontal layout or a vertical layout? Daily pages, weekly pages or monthly pages?
  • In addition to a calendar, what other features do you want? Do you hope to use your planner for goal setting, meal planning, or business planning? What about tracking your exercise or water consumption?

We've picked out the best planners for everyone from students and teachers to parents and professionals. Read on to check out our top picks. If you're headed back to school or college, you should also check out our college dorm room guide, our guide to back to school supplies, and more great back to school content on Insider Picks.

Although the Passion Planner is our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Panda Planner, the Erin Condren LifePlanner, the Blue Sky Academic Year Planner, and the Mead Five Star Advance Weekly/Monthly Planner.

The best planner overall

Why you'll love it: The Passion Planner offers lots of motivational extras that will have you feeling passionate about your to-do list and your life.

The Passion Planner started in late 2013 as a Kickstarter project. Founder Angelia Trinidad was suffering from “feelings of emptiness” after graduating from college. Her answer? Create a tool that would allow herself, and ultimately others, the ability to define their goals and dreams and then break them down into actionable steps.

So what’s inside this 210-page, 8.5-by-11-inch faux leather black book? Start with the Passion RoadMap. It kicks off with an exercise that helps you define and create actions for your goals in three months, one year, three years, and throughout your life. Weekly layouts, as well as annual and monthly overview calendars, keep you organized, while monthly reflection questions and inspirational quotes keep you focused on your progress.

There is also a “Space of Infinite Possibility” where you can take notes, draw, create, write, or brainstorm. Smooth, extra-thick paper makes it fun to write in this planner.

There are more than 150 user reviews on Amazon, and they are all five stars! This level of positivity is almost unprecedented. Headlines to the reviews include: “Finally found the perfect planner” and “I recommend x10,000.”

The design behind the Hyperloop dates back long before Elon Musk — take a look at its evolution

1974 vacuum train sci fi

In 2013, Elon Musk, the famed entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and Space X, came up with an idea for a vacuum-and-maglev-powered super-fast train that would travel through a tube. It would be called the Hyperloop.

In a research paper, he outlined its potential and challenged other tech companies to develop it for commercialization. Two startups, Shervin Pishevar’s Hyperloop One and Dirk Ahlborn’s Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, are perhaps the closest to making the Hyperloop a reality. (Musk hinted in July that he is working on his own system, tweeting that he "received verbal government approval" to build stops in Washington, DC and New York City.)

But Musk is not the first person to suggest air pressure-driven transportation. As io9 notes, the concept behind the Hyperloop originated in the late 17th century with the invention of the world's first artificial vacuum, which led to designs for "underground rapid transit systems" powered by pneumatics (i.e. pressurized air) in the decades that followed.

Take a look at a brief history of the technology that led to Musk's Hyperloop.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's latest tweet about the Hyperloop has city governments perplexed

In 1799, inventor George Medhurst proposed an idea to move goods through cast-iron pipes using air pressure. In 1844, he built a railway station (for passenger carriages) in London that relied on pneumatics until 1847.

Source: io9

Throughout the mid-1850s, several more pneumatic railways were built in Dublin, London, and Paris. The London Pneumatic Despatch system was meant to transport parcels, but it was large enough to carry people, too. To mark its opening, the Duke of Buckingham traveled through it in 1865.

Around that time, French novelist Jules Verne published "Paris in the 20th Century," which envisioned tube trains stretching across the Atlantic Ocean.

In the mid-1860s, South London constructed the Crystal Palace atmospheric railway, which ran through a park. A fan, which measured 22 feet in diameter, propelled the train. On return journeys, the fan's blades reversed, sucking the carriage backwards.

All of the Valyrian steel weapons we've seen on 'Game of Thrones' and who has them right now

$

Nights King rising

Say, have you seen any Valyrian steel lying around? Why am I asking? Oh, no reason, just there’s a giant army of the dead about to invade Westeros and they’re commanded by these evil demons who are only vulnerable to Valyrian steel and dragonglass.

I guess you could say it’s a pressing issue. Anyway, in the interest of everyone in Westeros not dying, here’s a helpful roundup of all the Valyrian steel weapons we’ve seen in "Game of Thrones" and who’s got them right now.

Ice — technically no one

The ancestral greatsword of House Stark was the first Valyrian-steel blade we saw in the show.

Remember how quickly it cut off poor Will’s head? (Pretty ironic in retrospect that the first person killed by a Valyrian-steel sword on "GOT" was also the first person who tried to warn everyone about the White Walkers.)

Unfortunately, Ice isn’t around anymore: After Ned’s death, Tywin Lannister melted it down to make two smaller swords, Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail. (A side note for budding Westerosi historians: The two new swords are meant as replacements for the Lannisters’ original Valyrian-steel sword, Brightroar, which was lost with King Tommen II after he sailed with it to the ruins of Valyria and never returned.)

Oathkeeper — Brienne of Tarth

Oathkeeper was originally a gift from Tywin to Jaime Lannister, but he regifted it to Brienne of Tarth when he sent her on a mission to find the Stark girls. (She’s the one who named it.)

Brienne tried to give it back to Jaime at Riverrun in season six, but he let her keep it.

Widow's Wail — Jaime Lannister

The second of the Lannisters’ new Valyrian-steel swords, this one was a wedding gift to Joffrey, who gave it its garish name.

After Joffrey’s death, Jaime decided, "Hey, might as well take it, it’s not like anyone else is using it," and so now he’s got it with him in the Reach.

Here's what it's like inside the bunkers Ukrainian troops are living in every day

Ukraine war trenches Avdiivka

Ukrainian soldiers stationed near the village of Luhanske were in their bunker on the night of July 31st when an 82mm mortar shell landed directly on top, according to the Kyiv Post.

Their fortification did its job: No one was injured.

The war in eastern Ukraine started shortly after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 when pro-Russian separatists proclaimed parts of the Donbas as independent states known as the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic.

Russia has funded, managed and supplied weapons to these rebel states ever since. Moscow admitted it was helping the rebels in late 2015 after repeated denials to the contrary.

Since the 2015 Minsk II peace agreement, in which Kiev and Russian-backed separatists agreed to withdraw their tanks and heavy artillery from the 250 mile long front lines, the war has largely turned into stagnant trench warfare.

Reminiscent of World War I, the two sides these days mostly lob mortars and grenades and trade sniper fire at and with each other. In response, soldiers on both sides dig networks of trenches and deep bunkers for protection.

And the bunkers have only gotten more complex and elabarote over the last three years.

Here's what they look like.

SEE ALSO: Here's what we know about the reported 100,000 Russian troops going to NATO's borders

The soldiers first dig out a hole, which is usually at least waist-deep. Then they put down a layer of timber and cover it with dirt. The bunkers are also sometimes fortified with concrete.

Like this.

Sometimes the bunkers are less fortified, like this Russian-backed separatist one that appears to have little to no dirt on top.

Miners dug hundreds, even thousands, of feet into the ground here, extracting one of humanity's most treasured minerals: salt.

They've since left the mine, having extracted its treasures, but they left behind an incredible patchwork of passages as tall as cathedrals.

As you drop lower into the dark, fresh air suddenly surrounds you. It smells ... clean.

Wellness centers in the US are racing to offer salt rooms, salt chambers, salt beds, and salt yoga to re-create the experience in these caves. One is now open at Saks Fifth Avenue.

8 reasons why we're obsessed with Jason Momoa

$

Jason Momoa red carpet

The INSIDER Summary:

  • There are plenty of reasons to love "Game of Thrones" actor Jason Momoa.
  • He often shows off his sense of humor and pics of his family on Instagram.
  • He also loves to pay homage to his Hawaiian heritage.

Jason Momoa looks like he's one part Viking, one part rock star and two parts Hawaiian Jesus — but one thing's for certain, he's all hunk. And though his looks are certainly showstopping, they're not the only reason we love him so much.

He's handsome, he's talented, he's romantic... did we mention he's handsome? I mean, there are a million reasons we can't get enough of "Game of Thrones," and we're always wistfully waiting for Momoa to pop back in.

If you're not as obsessed as we are, it's officially time for you to hop aboard the Momoa train. Here's why.

1. He's got a fire inside

Getting into character for an audition is hard. It's a sterile environment, and the people reading with you don't usually give much back. But, dude. Momoa's audition to land the part of Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in "GoT," is crazy good. He performed the Haka, a traditional South Pacific war dance.

"I'm half Hawaiian, and the Haka is a very sacred thing, something your family teaches you," he said in an interview. "My father taught me."

2. He's not afraid to get physical

Momoa is a big dude, but he's super in shape and isn't afraid to throw his weight around. At a Comic-Con presentation for "Justice League" in July 2017, he interacted with fans as he sat cross-legged on the ground, thrashed his hair around as he showed off his trident and even smashed his chair on stage to get everyone riled up (in a good way).

He'll also happily take a punch for the sake of a role. To play the title role in "Conan," the actor enlisted a friend to help, well, rough him up. "I wanted to make it look like he was more barbaric, so I had a buddy punch me in the nose," he told the "Huffington Post" in 2011. "He should always have a broken nose, I think — a constant flow of blood coming out of his body somewhere."

3. He's #FamilyGoals

Instagram Embed:

Width: 800px

Not only does Momoa make up half of one of Hollywood's — and, you know, the planet's — hottest couples (his wife is Lisa Bonet), but he also has two healthy, happy, gorgeous children.

On top of that, the hulking six-foot, four-inch star is a total softie when it comes to Bonet. "She's so amazing," he told "HuffPost Live.""She's an angel. She's amazing. God bless her." He also said he wrote her part in "Road to Paloma" specifically with her in mind because she is his dream girl. "I always wanted to work with her. It's funny [though] — she made me shy." Be still, our hearts!

7 travel habits frequent flyers swear by

woman in airport

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Frequent flyers' travel experiences can be helpful for anyone planning a trip.
  • For example, consider traveling in the "shoulder season" to avoid crowds and steep prices.
  • Check (and re-check) your itinerary, boarding passes, and reservations. You might even want to weigh your luggage before you get to the airport to avoid extra fees.

Remember how George Clooney’s ultra-slick character in “Up in the Air” had everything ready to go before he passed through security? Well, seasoned world travelers are just like that, too — they know where they’re going, pack what they need, and don’t waste precious minutes at check-in.

Here’s what you need to know to fly like a pro in the era of long airport security lines.

They hire airport greeters

"More discerning travelers know their stuff and want to get where they're going, especially on connecting flights," says Julie Danzinger, director of luxury travel services at Ovation Vacations in New York City.

To help you breeze through airport screening, she recommends splurging on an airport meet-and-greet service like Solve, whose concierge can carry your bags, escort you to your airline's check-in, make sure you board on time, and whisk you past airport security, immigration, and customs.

"When you land you kind of feel like a celebrity," Danzinger, who's been a big fan of the Las Vegas-based startup since it launched last year, said.

They pack like pros

"People that travel often understand how to pack," Danzinger said. "Whether it's for business or pleasure, if someone's going to ship their luggage or not, they know what they need for each day and plan to have room to bring things home if they go shopping."

They also pack for worst-case scenarios, such as missing a flight or a flight being canceled, says Renee Falack, a luxury travel concierge with Ovation Vacations. That means having anything important, such as a toothbrush, medication, and a fresh set of clothes, on you at all times.

They know their airports

Experienced travelers tend to know their airports' layouts and how much time they will need to get from point A to point B, Danzinger says. "Even with a greeter, you know you need to be patient" in a sprawling hub like Heathrow, while other airports, say in Germany or Ireland, are far more efficient (and smaller).

They also know to ask about an airport if they've never been or to download a terminal map via an app like Kayak or SeatGuru.

NASA's Cassini probe just got closer to Saturn than ever before — here's what its death spiral is revealing

cassini saturn grand finale illustration artwork nasa jpl caltech 13

NASA's Cassini probe is plunging to its death.

The nuclear-powered spacecraft has orbited Saturn for 13 years, and sent back hundreds of thousands of images. The photos include close-ups of the gaseous giant, its famous rings, and its enigmatic moons — including Titan, which has its own atmosphere, and icy Enceladus, which has a subsurface ocean that could conceivably harbor microbial life.

To prevent Cassini from crashing into and contaminating any of those hidden oceans, the space agency has directed the craft, which is running out of fuel, onto a crash course with Saturn.

On Monday, the space probe conducted the first of its final five orbits around the planet, dipping into Saturn's atmosphere, according to NASA. It's all part of the "Grand Finale" for the $3.26-billion, 20-year mission, which will end on September 15 as the spacecraft dives to its demise and burns up like a meteor.

"As it makes these five dips into Saturn, followed by its final plunge, Cassini will become the first Saturn atmospheric probe," Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at JPL, said in a press release. "It's long been a goal in planetary exploration to send a dedicated probe into the atmosphere of Saturn, and we're laying the groundwork for future exploration with this first foray."

These last passes will reveal new data about Saturn, its atmosphere and clouds, the materials making up its rings, and the mysterious gravity and magnetic fields of the gas planet.

"It's Cassini's blaze of glory," Spilker previously told Business Insider. "It will be doing science until the very last second."

Here's what the probe's final spiral is revealing so far.

SEE ALSO: NASA's $1 billion Jupiter probe just sent back breathtaking new images of the Great Red Spot

Gravity from Titan, Saturn's planet-sized moon, plays a key role in Cassini's final orbits. NASA is using the force to bend Cassini's course, a task that would otherwise require large amounts of fuel.

These two views of Titan show the new details about the moon's surface — including clouds and hazes in its atmosphere — that Cassini has revealed.

The first of the probe's final five orbits took it between the rings and the planet itself. Data from that fly-by is being sent back to NASA today.

  • Child stars like Dakota Fanning and Ariel Winter didn't let fame stop them from pursuing a degree.
  • Eva Longoria went back for her master's degree after a successful run on "Desperate Housewives."

There’s a routine that nearly every high school senior goes through: apply to college, wait an ungodly amount of time, then find out which university you’re going to ship yourself off to at the end of summer. For most, college is a transition period for early 20-somethings to learn more about themselves and what they want to do with the rest of their lives. However, for a lot of teen stars — whose careers seem set before they reach legal adulthood — things like college are put on the back burner to pursue other endeavors.

And while a lot of celebrities usually opt out of university to focus on their work, there are some stars who choose to press pause on their burgeoning careers in pursuit of a higher education. Take a look at 11 celebrities who went to college after they already famous, ahead.

Ariel Winter

After making a name for herself as one of the Dunphy children on the Emmy-winning comedy "Modern Family,"Ariel Winter was accepted into the University of California, Los Angeles in 2016. However, after scheduling conflicts, the actress was forced to defer for a year and is expected to begin her freshman year this fall as a political science major with dreams of becoming a lawyer. Winter's "Modern Family" co-star Nolan Gould also joked about "sibling" rivalry, considering he was recently accepted to UCLA's opposing school, University of Southern California.

America Ferrera

Not too long after starting her freshman year at University of Southern California, America Ferrera was offered the lead role in "Ugly Betty." After a conversation with her professor, who advised her to take the job and come back to finish her degree later, America — who had already starred on "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"— dropped out of USC to begin her television career. She returned to USC in 2008 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in international relations in 2013, 10 years after she initially began.

Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning was already a household name, with critically acclaimed hits like "I Am Sam" and "Uptown Girls," by the time she decided to take a break from her acting career to attend New York University in 2011. There, Fanning attended the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where she majored in women's studies, with a focus on women in film and culture. She graduated in 2014.

9 things that could be causing you to have painful sex

tired sleepy bed woman

Sex can be an enjoyable act that bonds you and your partner or simply a source of pleasure in your life. But for so many people, sex can be something scary and hard to enjoy because of pain during the act.

According to the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, one in three women have reported pain during intercourse. However, it's not often discussed. Many people find themselves avoiding sex or trudging through it despite the pain, which can have psychological and physical consequences.

But understanding the underlying causes of painful sex is important. That's why we spoke with experts to round up some of the most common reasons women could be experiencing pain during sex. It goes without saying that if you're experiencing pain or any of these symptoms, you may want to talk to your doctor as well.

Here's what the experts had to say:

You could suffer from vaginal dryness.

This is probably the most common reason for pain during sex, according to experts. Dryness can be caused by numerous things from smoking, irritating soap, antidepressants, and simply your body's natural state.

If you feel that vaginal dryness may be to blame for pain during sex, you have a few simple options. Increasing the amount of foreplay with your partner or using a lubricant can made a big difference in how things feel, OB-GYN and women's health expert Dr. Sherry Ross told INSIDER.

If you find that still isn't doing the trick, speak with your doctor about stronger medications or lubricants you can try.

You could suffer from Vaginismus.

Vaginismus is a condition that can make sex uncomfortable or nearly impossible for many people with vaginas.

Vaginismus is an involuntary vaginal muscle spasm that prevents penetration. It's hard to peg down what exactly causes vaginismus, but some causes can include urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and, most commonly, trauma.

"Physical therapy, psychotherapy, and medication help in dealing with this," Dr. Ross said.

You might be doing it from the wrong position.

All bodies are different and when having sex with another person, there can be tons of complications. If you and your partner are having difficulties having sex, it may just be about the positions you're trying.

If you've only attempted sex in a certain type or position, try switching it up. You might find that moving in a different way makes things more comfortable.

"The 'missionary' position tends to be easier for women and their anatomy whereas 'doggie style' or from behind allows for deeper penetration for the male but more discomfort and pain for many women," said Ross.

Freaks and Geeks

It's the age of the revivals.

From "Full House" to "Twin Peaks," fans of these 1990s shows have been given the treat of watching them come back to screens as reboots and sequels. Sure, sometimes the new version might not live up to the expectations of fans, but other times, there's enough story left to tell.

Here are 17 shows from the '90s we'd like to see back on TV.

"Saved by the Bell" (1989-1993)

"Saved by the Bell" followed six high school friends and tackled a number of social issues like substance abuse and women's rights during its run. Sure, the series was followed by two TV movies, a college sequel, and a spin-off with different characters, but all of the fun cast reunions — most recently a brief skit on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in 2015 — show how much fun these characters would be to bring back.

"The Ben Stiller Show" (1989-1990, 1992-1993)

The sketch comedy featured actors including Ben Stiller, Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo, and Bob Odenkirk. The show was first aired on MTV, but moved to Fox in 1992. It was canceled after 13 episodes, but the hilarious show did win an Emmy.

"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" (1990-1996, 1999-2000)

A group of friends gathered around the campfire and shared scary stories in this anthology series. Each story is what played out on screen, and it was all just enough to give you nightmares. Sure, the show was revived a few years after it first ended, but it might be time to bring this back.

This startup used a few key measurements to make me perfect-fitting custom clothes — here's how they did it

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Screen Shot 2017 08 15 at 3.55.48 PMNo two people are built exactly the same, so going by size tags won't always leave you with clothes that fit well.

There's much more to a great-fitting dress shirt than neck size and sleeve length. The same goes for pants; you're going to need more than waist and inseam measurements for an amazing fit.

Luckily, Woodies Clothing has the answer to getting perfect-fitting dress clothes for men — and it's super easy. The New York City-based custom clothing startup was created out of true necessity.

In 2014, founder Jacob Wood worked as a menswear buyer at Macy's when a pair of ill-fitting cargo pants sparked the idea. After inspecting the pants, he realized that they probably cost $5 to make and would go on to sell for about $75, even with generic size options and a bad fit.

Woodies' approach has been the antithesis of large department stores —  its clothes are made unique to customers sizing and style, and are sold directly to them. There's no traditional middleman, and because of that you save money — a shirt that typically would cost over $175 can sell for $85.

Woodies gave me the opportunity to customize my own shirt and pants, and here are my thoughts:

Initially, Woodies offered to have someone take my measurements for me, but I declined. I wanted to have the same experience as the average buyer, and I was still very pleased with the process.

Instead of entering every single measurement in, I entered the ones I did know like my inseam, neck, sleeve, and waist sizes. Then, I entered several general measurements like my height, weight, and desired fit and ordered a flannel shirt and pair of khakis.

It took about three weeks from when I placed my order to when it arrived, but it was well worth the wait. When I opened the package, I felt like shirt and pants were made just for me.

The inside tags on both pieces had my initials, which was a very nice touch compared to traditional size labels.

Upon trying them on, I was genuinely surprised at how well they fit, especially the pants. With most pants, labels like "regular,""slim," or "extra slim" mean nothing until you actually try them on. I chose slim for my khakis, and Woodies nailed the fit perfectly.

Aside from the great fit on the shirt and pants, the quality of the materials was excellent. Woodies' shirts and pants are better than brands you'd find at higher prices in department stores.

If you're looking for dress clothes made to fit your body exactly, this is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to do so. For an even better deal, buy three or more custom shirts and save 10% by using the promo code "WOODIES" at checkout.

After signing up, the first step is editing your account information.

Your initials are important because they will be featured on the inside tag of both shirts and pants, as well as on monograms, if you decide to add them.

Enter all of your shirt and pant measurements for perfect-fitting clothes.

Shirts are more than just a neck size and sleeve length and pants are more than waist and inseam measurements. By adding all of your measurements, you'll get clothes made just for you.

Woodies has information on how to measure yourself accurately, but if you don't want to, you can choose to enter your height, weight, average sizes, and desired fit. The specific measurements are generated from that. This is what I did, and the shirt and pants still fit perfectly.

Now, you're ready to shop. Pick a shirt and start customizing.

I went with the Tartan Flannel Plaid shirt, but there are many options to choose from.

10 matchups from the new 2017-18 NBA schedule that everyone will be dying to see

Adam Silver

The NBA released its schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Monday, meaning we can finally begin to look forward to specific dates and matchups.

The 2016-17 playoffs were marked by the dominance of the Golden State Warriors in the West and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East, but things may be different this season. A lackluster offseason for Cleveland could lead to a wide-open conference, while several teams looking to challenge the Warriors in the West made aggressive deals to strike this year.

With so many familiar faces on the move this offseason — as well as some of the league's most polarizing stars staying in place — there will be plenty to watch once the season gets underway on October 17. Below, check out 10 matchups that any NBA fan can get excited about.

Oct. 17: Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors

Time: 10:30 p.m.

Where to watch: TNT

Why it matters: These could be the top two teams in the West, and what's more, they're set to square off on the first day of the regular season. Golden State is returning much of its title-winning squad from last year, but don't be surprised if James Harden and newly-acquired point guard Chris Paul keep the Rockets in contention to the very end.

Oct. 20: Cleveland Cavaliers at Milwaukee Bucks

Time: 7 p.m.

Where to watch: ESPN

Why it matters: This contest will feature a battle of present versus future when All-Stars LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo enter the game for their respective sides. Both are freakishly talented athletes who can affect the game from anywhere on the floor. While Antetokounmpo is the one expected to take a big step forward this year, it will be interesting to see what James can do in his age-33 season.

Oct. 20: Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

Time: 8 p.m.

Where to watch: NBA League Pass or local channels

Why it matters: The Timberwolves will have a new look this season, and it's not just because of the redesigned uniforms. With All-Stars like Jimmy Butler and Jeff Teague joining an established young core that features Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, it will be fascinating to see what Minnesota can do in its first home game. The contest will also provide an early look at something we haven't seen in years: a Jazz team without Gordon Hayward.

29 true facts that sound like they're fake

Cashew apple fruit on tree before harvest

Life is weird and there are a lot of facts out there that sound too unbelievable to be true.

Did you know, for instance, that a day on Venus is longer than a year? Or that some animals are born pregnant?

These aren't to be confused with the plenty of hoaxes out there, or widely held beliefs that turn out to be wrong. Using threads from Reddit and previously published articles onBuzzFeed, Business Insider, and elsewhere on the web, here are 29 facts that sound so weird, you might think they're fake.

About 7% of all humans who have ever lived are alive today.

About 108.2 billion people have ever been born in the history of the world, according to the Population Reference Bureau. And about 7.442 billion are alive today. Do the math, and you'll see just how crazy population growth can be.

A chicken lived without a head for 18 months.

Chicken brains are concentrated at the back of the skull, and there isn't much to begin with anyway. For that reason, a decapitated chicken can survive for quite a while, living off just its nerve endings.

Mike the Headless Chicken is perhaps the most famous example. Its owner, a farmer named Lloyd Olsen, chopped his head off in 1945, but the chicken just didn't die. So the family kept him around and dropped food and water directly into his esophagus. It finally gave out after 18 months and considerable media attention.

There's a species of shark that can live for around 500 years.

The Greenland Shark has the longest lifespan of all known vertebrates, living an average of 272 years, and some of them can live to be around 500 years old.

Trump said he likes to 'know the facts' before releasing statements — here are 5 times he did the opposite

U.S. President Donald Trump answers questions about his responses to the violence, injuries and deaths at the

President Donald Trump defended on Tuesday his decision to wait multiple days to condemn white-nationalist and neo-Nazi groups involved in violent clashes in Virginia, telling reporters, "before I make a statement, I like to know the facts."

"I need the facts. I don't want to rush into a statement," he said at a press conference at Trump Tower in New York.

But in reality, Trump has a long history of speculating on incidents both domestic and abroad before the facts have fully emerged.

The following five moments show that when it comes to commenting on tragedy, Trump doesn't always wait for the evidence.

Philippines attack

In June, Trump immediately labeled a deadly incident in the Philippines a "terrorist attack," only to be proven wrong minutes later.

Initial reports stated that an attacker set fire to Resorts World Manila casino, killing 37 people.

"It is really pretty sad what is going on throughout the world with terror," Trump said in Washington, also referring to the incident as "the terrorist attack in Manila."

However, officials in the Philippines quickly rejected terrorism as the reason for the attack, declaring it a suspected robbery. They eventually confirmed the attack was financially motivated.

Shooting in Paris

In April, after a gunman in Paris killed a police officer and wounded two others and a German tourist, Trump labeled the shooting a terrorist attack, even though French officials said it was too early to declare the suspect's motive.

"That’s a terrible thing, and it’s a very, very terrible thing that’s going on in the world today," Trump said. "But it looks like another terrorist attack. And what can you say — it just never ends."

Chelsea bombing

In September 2016, after an explosion in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood injured 31 people, Trump commented publicly on the matter before local law-enforcement had released any conclusions on it.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Colorado, Trump declared the explosion was caused by a bomb — an assertion he gloated to Fox News for making before news outlets.

But Trump's claim to accuracy on the subject soon fell apart when he linked the bombing to ISIS and speculated it had "many foreign connections."

In reality, the bombing was committed by an Afghan-American who was not part of a terrorist group, but was believed to be influenced by Al-Qaeda.
