These are the richest billionaires in 17 European countries — and this is how they made their money

liliane bettencourt

LONDON — Europe's wealthiest individuals are a mixed group.

Some of them founded iconic international brands like Lego and Ikea, and some owe their billions to the wealth of centuries-old dynasties.

There are those in eastern Europe who made their money recently after the collapse of the Soviet Union, industrialists from Scandinavia with fortunes derived from old industry, and some in Western Europe with ancient royal connections.

Business Insider has used Forbes' 2017 Billionaires' List to determine the wealthiest individual in each European state, ranked from the least wealthy upwards.

In some countries, no residents made the Forbes list, and the countries were therefore not included in this ranking.

Monaco's Tatiana Casiraghi — NET WORTH: £1.9 billion ($2.4 billion)

Beer heiress Tatiana Casiraghi is Monaco's richest resident, and she also happens to be a royal there. Casiraghi inherited the bulk of her fortune from her late grandfather, who sold his Colombian brewery Bavaria for billions in 2005. She is married to Prince Andrea Casiraghi of Hanover, who is fourth in the line to the Monaco throne.

Finland's Antti Herlin — NET WORTH: £2.9 billion ($3.7 billion)

Finland's richest man made his money in an unlikely way — the escalator and elevator business. He's the great-grandson of Harald Herlin, who purchased the KONE engineering company in the 1920s.

Poland's Dominika & Sebastian Kulczyk — NET WORTH: £2.8 billion ($3.6 billion)

The sibling pair share the fortune left by their father Jan, who died in 2015. They have run their father's portfolio of investments and assets since 2014.

7 details you might have missed on the latest 'Game of Thrones' episode

Daenerys Targaryen with Drogon Game of Thrones

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode six, "Beyond the Wall."

The second-to-last episode of "Game of Thrones" season seven packed a lot of drama into its 70 minutes. From Daenerys and Jon turning up the heat to the Night King resurrecting Viserion, there were a lot of emotional and divisive moments. As usual, we've gathered all the smaller details that might have slipped through the cracks amidst the glorious dragonfire and sword fighting.

Keep reading for a look at the 7 moments you might have missed.

The Hound pointed out a mountain shaped like an arrowhead he'd seen in a fire-vision.

On the premiere of season seven, Beric and Thoros told the Hound to look into the flames. When he did, he saw a vision of a mountain where the dead were marching past.

Turns out we'd already seen that location before, back on the sixth season.

Here's the other side of that same mountain as seen by Bran in season six.

We saw this same location when Bran had a vision of the Children of the Forest creating the Night King, as Redditor Smurph269 pointed out. There was a rock formation in a spiral pattern — the pattern the White Walkers now often repeat

It's interesting to think Jon and company might have been heading straight for an area beyond the Wall with immense ritualistic meaning. Perhaps the Night King even led them there on purpose somehow? Then again, it's also possible the "Game of Thrones" showrunners re-used a set in Iceland without realizing it.

When Jorah was trying to bolster Thoros' spirits, he mentioned a historic battle known to book readers.

Jorah and Thoros were both present at the Siege of Pyke — the final battle of Robert's Rebellion all those years ago. As Jorah said, Thoros was the first man through the walls, an act Jorah had taken for bravery but it turns out Thoros was black-out drunk.

That battle was where Jorah earned his knighthood, and it was also the fight in which Theon Greyjoy's father, Balon, was defeated yet again. At the battle's end, Balon was forced to give Theon to Ned Stark as a ward, setting in motion the eventual betrayal of Theon to the Stark family.

50 iconic British foods that have been discontinued — despite calls for their return

Everyone has a childhood snack they remember fondly from lunch boxes or as a weekend treat.

But depsite a generation with undying love for many of these biscuits, bars, and bags of crisps, a lot of them have been slowly disappearing from supermarket shelves for years.

Whether it's the questionable ice cream flavoured Monster Munch, or the recent travesty that was the Galaxy Truffle from the Celebrations selection box, we all have a retro treat we'll always hold in our hearts and pray will make a reappearance.

Business Insider compiled a list of some of the most saddening tragedies to hit kids' lunchboxes since the 1990s. Keep scrolling to see 50 iconic British foods that have been discontinued, despite calls for their return.

Rowntree's Secret chocolate bar

A delicate nest of milk chocolate strands surrounding a soft, mallowy centre similar to a Walnut Whip, these fragile chocolate bars were almost impossible to bring home from the corner shop still intact. Nevertheless, they were a firm fan favourite until they disappeared in 2003.

Many online petitions have circulated since the bar's untimely end, however fans aren't disheartened and continue to launch social media pages campaigning for the Secret bar's return.

Discontinued back in 2008, the Toffo fanbase erupted when they realised it was missing from sweet shop shelves. That's why, in 2014, when a single remaining packet of the individually-wrapped soft toffees was found in a sweet shop in Dundee, the internet went wild with Toffo fans trying to bargain for the last intact roll.

Galaxy truffles

When fans realised that the Galaxy Truffle had been removed from boxes of Celebrations in the buildup to Christmas 2011, forums across the internet debated the travesty for months. In fact, there are still some active threads today debating which Mars-company sweet should have been axed instead of the national treasure truffle.

Gorgeous new supercomputer images reveal what the total solar eclipse might look like

solar eclipse totality corona forecast predictive science inc 6

No one knows exactly what the total solar eclipse will look like until it actually happens on Monday.

But that hasn't stopped computer scientists from guessing.

Nearly anyone in the US can see the moon partially block the sun on Monday, weather permitting. However, those lucky enough to be in the 2,800-mile-long, 70-mile-wide path of totality will see the moon completely block the sun.

Totality will last about two minutes on August 21, and during that time, onlookers will not only view the darkest shadow of the moon, but also the sun's corona — a dim outer atmosphere of high-speed solar particles that's normally invisible during the day.

The corona is somewhat unpredictable, though, since the sun is a giant, dynamic, white-hot ball of super-heated plasma. The star is constantly feeding the corona with high-speed particles and changing its appearance.

To figure out what the corona will look on Monday, a scientific research company called Predictive Science, Inc., enlisted the help of three supercomputers to simulate a visual forecast of totality.

"This is our final prediction of the solar corona for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse," Predictive Science wrote on its website Thursday.

The 3D simulations take what is currently known about the sun — its magnetic field, output of particles, rotation rate, and more — and use mathematical models to push the fast forward button, according to a press release posted by the University of Texas at Austin. That university helped power the imagery with its Stampede2 supercomputer, in addition to the San Diego Supercomputer Center's Comet and NASA's Pleiades.

Here are a few of the simulations in the forecast and what they show.

SEE ALSO: How to safely watch the solar eclipse — even if you're not in the path of totality

This image shows roughly how the corona may appear to people on the ground if they look through a polarized "Newkirk" filter. You can see two lobes on the corona.

Totality's brightness may resemble this image. "These are two different attempts to approximate what the human eye might see during the solar eclipse," Predictive Science said.

By applying some filtering, this view highlights the wispy, almost wave-like tendrils of the corona.

Barcelona

Citizens from 34 different countries were caught up in the Barcelona terror attack on Thursday, according to Spanish authorities.

15 people have been killed and at least 126 were injured in two related attacks.

The first, and largest, was a van ramming attack on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and the second was a similar attack in the nearby city of Cambrils.

The Catalonian emergency services tweeted a graphic with the nations affected by the attack, the deadliest on Spanish soil since train bombings killed 192 in Madrid in 2004.

Here is what we know about the victims, whose identities are still being confirmed:

Julian Cadman, seven, Britain and Australia.

Julian Cadman, a British-Australian dual national, was killed in Barcelona. His family confirmed his death on Sunday after reports of his disappearance emerged on Friday.

He and his mother Jumarie, also known as Jom, were in the city for a wedding. She is in hospital in serious but stable condition, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

In a statement released to the media, his family described him as "so so energetic, funny and cheeky, always bringing a smile to our faces."

Here is the statement in full:

Ian Moore Wilson, Canada.

Ian Moore Wilson was the father of a Vancouver Police Department officer, according to a statement released through the unit.

His daughter Fiona Wilson said: "He was compassionate, generous, adventurous, and always game for a lively debate, a good book, exploring new places, and a proper-sized pint."

She said an unknown motorist rushed Wilson to hospital on his scooter after he was hit by the van.

Jared Tucker, 43, US.

The US State Department confirmed that at least one American was killed and another was injured in Barcelona and Cambrils, according to the AP.

It did not identify either of the casualties, but Jared Tucker's family later confirmed he was killed after being on holiday in Barcelona with his wife, Heidi.

Heidi told NBC News: "I got pushed inside the souvenir kiosk and stayed there hiding while everybody kept running by, screaming."

We visited the controversial, award-winning Trump Winery in Charlottesville— and it was completely different from what we expected

Trump Winery 4

This week, in a press conference addressing violent white-nationalist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump brought up a surprising topic: his winery.

"I know a lot about Charlottesville," he said. "It's a great place that has been badly hurt over the last couple days. I own one of the largest wineries in the United States. It is in Charlottesville."

Trump Winery, which is run by the president's son Eric, has received backlash following some of Trump's controversial political stances and actions. In February, there was a movement backed by a local chapter of the National Organization for Women to boycott Wegmans for selling Trump wine at Virginia locations.

Sign up for Business Insider's newsletter: What you need to know every day delivered right to your inbox.

According to a legal disclaimer on its website, Trump Winery is "a registered trade name of Eric Trump Wine Manufacturing LLC, which is not owned, managed or affiliated with Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization or any of their affiliates."

While on a recent trip to Charlottesville, we decided to pay Trump Winery a visit.

Considering our lackluster experience at Trump Grill, our expectations weren't too high when we visited. But, we went in with an open mind. Here's what we found.

SEE ALSO: We ate at the controversial Trump Grill restaurant — here's what happened

DON'T MISS: We went to Waffle House — the American highway staple beloved by truckers — and discovered why Anthony Bourdain and chefs are obsessed with it

The Trump Winery — originally the Kluge Winery, which was bought by Trump in 2011 — is located in the rolling green hills outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, minutes from another more historical presidential estate, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.

The tasting room sits off a winding country road in the midst of the winery's many rolling acres. Like many of the area's plentiful vineyards, it's a popular tourist destination and hosts many weddings.

As we walked in, we noticed a familiar plaque from the American Academy of Hospitality Science. The award plaques also adorn the walls of other Trump properties — the head of the organization, Joseph Cinque, is a longtime Trump acquaintance. Sometimes described as a "small-time mobster," Cinque has previously been convicted of possessing stolen property.

Game of Thrones the Queen's Justice season 7Warning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven. If you aren't caught up with the series, read at your own risk.

Season seven of "Game of Thrones" has already proven to be one of the most brutal yet. Some major battles have brought some major deaths, including one that made dying look really, really cool.

This week, the Night King and the Wights were responsible for the batch of deaths, coming to your TV very soon.

Here is your guide to who died on "Game of Thrones" so far this season:

SEE ALSO: All the biggest moments from this week's action-packed 'Game of Thrones'

Obara Sand

Time of death: Episode two, "Stormborn."

Cause of death: In his attack on Yara's fleet, Euron Greyjoy stabs the daughter of Oberyn Martell in the gut with a spear. By the end of the battle, her body is hanging from the ship, so she's definitely dead.

Nymeria Sand

Time of death: Episode two, "Stormborn."

Cause of death: In Euron's attack, he strangles Nymeria, who is a daughter of Oberyn (and not Arya Stark's direwolf, who shares the same name). At the end of the battle, her body is also hanging from the ship.

Tyene Sand

Time of death: Episode three, "The Queen's Justice" (kind of).

Cause of death: Cersei locks Ellaria up in a dungeon with her daughter, Tyene, who she poisons the same way Ellaria poisoned Myrcella: with a kiss and a poison called "The Long Farewell." So Ellaria has to watch her own daughter die a brutal death, and in another sick twist, decompose before her own eyes, and there's nothing she can do about it.

How to safely watch the solar eclipse if you don't have special glasses

Solar eclipse shadow

Today, the US will get to see a solar eclipse

Those who live along or have traveled to the 70-mile-wide streak of totality will get see the moon completely block out the sun's light as it crosses between the Earth and the sun (weather permitting).

The rest will be treated to a partial eclipse, where the moon blocks out a portion of the sun. Regardless of the view, a solar eclipse is a fairly rare event to observe — and one that should never been seen by looking directly at the sun without protection

Solar eclipse glasses that allow people view the event safely have sold out over the last few weeks. If you weren't able to snag a pair, you're not out of luck. Here are some ways to watch the eclipse without special glasses.

SEE ALSO: Bizarre things happen to the environment and animals during a total solar eclipse — here’s what to look out for

DON'T MISS: What looking at the solar eclipse without glasses could do to your eyes

Build a pinhole camera.

Pinhole cameras can get pretty advanced, but NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has instructions for building an incredibly simple version in just a few minutes.

Here's what you need: scissors, tin foil, a piece of thick card stock (or paper), tape, and a needle.

Cut a hole in the middle of one sheet of card stock, tape the edges of a sheet of tin foil over it, then carefully pierce the center of the foil with the needle — presto, you've made a pinhole camera. Hover your device over something white, ideally a piece of paper, and move it up and down until you figure out where the ideal focus point is.

Use a colander to project the eclipse onto a piece of paper.

You don't even need to even build a contraption — any object with tiny holes that let light through works.

If you happen to be near some kitchen supplies, grab a colander. In addition to  straining your pasta, it can project the light from the eclipse onto a piece of paper or cardboard so you can get a glimpse of the effect. With your back toward the sun, hold the colander over your head and hold out the piece of paper or cardboard out in front of you. You should be able to see the crescent shape from the partial eclipse.

This also works with straw hats and spoons with holes in them, according to Mark Littman and Fred Espenek, authors of "Totality: The Great American Eclipses of 2017 and 2024."

Make a fist.

You can also just use your fist. Close your hand tight enough to let only a small point of light through. Hold it up near a surface, and you should be able to see the eclipse projected through the hole.

United States

Americans are about to experience a solar eclipse.

On August 21, the entire US — including Hawaii and Alaska — will be able to see at least a partial eclipse. People located along one 70-mile-wide streak in particular will be able to see a total solar eclipse, or the moment when the moon crosses between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light.

For those hoping to see the eclipse, the appearance will vary based on where you are. To help determine what that view will look like ahead of time, a team from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory built a simulation that maps out what the eclipse looks like during the window it's over the US.

A word of warning: If you do plan to catch the solar eclipse on August 21, don't look directly at the sun. There are solar filters designed to let you see the eclipse in a way that will keep your eyes from getting damaged.

Here's what the eclipse will look like in some of the major cities across the US. These projections don't account for clouds, which could obstruct the view in some parts of the US

Those in Los Angeles will get to see a partial eclipse at 10:18 a.m. PT.

Phoenix will get to see a partial eclipse at about 11:24 a.m. MT.

There's nothing like a rare astronomical event to bring Americans together.

Eclipse-chasers came out in droves on Monday to witness a total solar eclipse— when the moon crosses between the Earth and the sun and blocks out the sun's light — at gatherings across the country.

Total solar eclipses happen about every one to three years, but Monday's event was special. It was the first time since 1918 that the path of totality, where day briefly turns to night, cut diagonally across the entire US.

We rounded up the best photos of people watching the eclipse from Portland, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina. We will continue to update this post throughout the day.

10 celebrities you forgot were discovered on social media

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Several super successful celebrities got their start on social media.
  • Both Justin Bieber and The Weeknd were discovered through their YouTube channels.
  • Colbie Caillat was discovered during the height of MySpace's popularity.

Believe it or not, there was a time before Instagram. In fact, there was a time when the internet didn’t exist at all, meaning posts like the one you’re reading right now would’ve never been written. We know: shocking. It’s hard to imagine, but we remember the days when you had to read a magazine to get celebrity news. Made out of paper. That you bought from the store.

Now, Instagram influencers know how to use the internet to their advantage, making big bucks off of sponsored posts and plugged “OOTDs”. And there are also lots of up-and-coming stars using the internet to their advantage.

Whether it’s via Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, or the now-defunct Vine and MySpace, people have found all sorts of ways to become famous. From Justin Bieber to Kate Upton, take a look at the 10 celebrities who made the jump, ahead.

Justin Bieber

In 2007, Bieber became the poster child of what social media can do when he was discovered by his manager, Scooter Braun, on YouTube. The singer was known by his small YouTube following as kidrauhl, a 13-year-old aspiring musician who posted covers of hits like Chris Brown's "With You." The covers quickly led to a meeting with Usher and a recording contract, and the rest is history.

Kate Upton

Before she was gracing the covers of GQ and Sports Illustrated, Upton was a struggling model. Her big break came when a friend posted a YouTube video of her doing the "dougie" at a basketball game in 2011. The video eventually went viral, leading Upton's Twitter followers to jump by 200,000 basically overnight. Since then, Upton has been a working model-actress with a burgeoning movie career and campaigns with Guess and Victoria's Secret under her belt.

Shawn Mendes

Long before his breakout single "Stitches" was played on repeat on every radio station in America, Mendes was a Canadian teen posting six-second Vine clips in his bedroom. After a Vine of him singing Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me" went viral, Mendes's internet presence grew, with his followers rising exponentially. Soon after, he caught the attention of Island Records, which signed him in 2014. With two No. 1 albums and a tour with Taylor Swift, Mendes has successfully transitioned from online personality to industry-recognized star.

AllGingham HangingThe Tie Bar is best known for its wide selection of ties and tie clips. You can find the seven ties every man should own for just $19 each and plenty of fun tie bars to transform a boring outfit.

While the brand has all the accessories you'll ever need, it also has the essentials— dress shirts.

Dress shirts are an major part of every professional man's wardrobe year round, but with summer quickly coming to an end, it's time to prepare specifically for the next season.

If you're looking to fill your closet with the right fall fashion dress shirts, The Tie Bar has you covered.

The brand recently launched its fall collection of shirts and offered to send me a few over to test. I've tried several of The Tie Bar's ties and clips, so I was very excited to finally pair them with some shirts.

My first impression of the The Tie Bar's shirts was that were good quality, especially given how much they cost. Each shirt is $55 and up to par with some more expensive options I've tried. At the same time, I've tried equally priced shirts that weren't even worth reviewing.

Aside from the quality of materials, the fit is also amazing. As a guy with a slimmer build, regular-fitting dress shirts are too big. I went with trim fit and they're perfect — not too loose and not too tight.

All of the shirts from the new fall collection are non-iron, so you won't have to worry about unsightly wrinkles. There is also a wide variety of styles. Whether you need the basics like solid white and blue or some bolder patterns like tattersall and gingham, you will be able to find it here.

You don't have to spend a fortune on new dress shirts every time the season changes. At just $55 each, The Tie Bar's shirts are super affordable and stylish. Save even more money by picking up three for $140.

Burgundy Petite Gingham

Burgundy is the perfect color for fall, and this Petite Gingham shirt is probably the most unique shirt of the bunch. What I like most about this shirt is that it's a color you would go for as your first second or even third dress shirt. Still, the burgundy color pairs nicely with a burgundy or blue tie and a blue or grey wool suit.

Green Multi-tone Gingham

Typically, green might be hard to work into your formal attire, but the this shirt makes it easy. The multi-tone gingham pairs well with a green tie and a blue suit.

Blue Mini Houndstooth

I chose the Blue Mini Houndstooth shirt because you can never go wrong with a blue dress shirt. At the same time, it's a bit different than the average dress shirt. The houndstooth pattern adds texture and the semi-spread collar works well with large knot ties.

The aircraft, which can seat up to 88 people, is available for global charter or as a Crystal package to get guests from experience to experience, for an average price of $55,000 an hour.

THE SNAP 30: Meet the most important people who help Evan Spiegel run Snap Inc. (SNAP)

While CEO Evan Spiegel may be the ultimate decision-maker at Snap, he can't pull all the strings by himself.

Since he started Snapchat with cofounder Bobby Murphy in 2011, Spiegel has surrounded himself with a team of seasoned deputies who oversee everything from the company's fledgling ad business to swelling engineering ranks.

While Spiegel focuses on product innovation, key hires, and acquisitions, his top lieutenants are tasked with making sure the newly-public entity that is Snap Inc. outlives competitors and meets investor expectations.

Here are the most important people who help Spiegel run Snap:

As cofounder and CEO, Evan Spiegel is Snap's chief visionary and product genius.

CEO Evan Spiegel started Snapchat with Bobby Murphy during their days as undergraduate students at Stanford.

A hands-on, polarizing leader who spends most of his time with Snapchat's tight-knit group of product designers, Spiegel is credited with implementing the app's most revolutionary ideas, like disappearing messages and Stories.

Along with Murphy, 27-year-old Spiegel wields majority voting rights at Snap and is the ultimate decider of the young "camera" company's future. His net worth of roughly $3 billion is heavily tied to Snap's volatile stock price.

Bobby Murphy cofounded Snapchat with Spiegel and is now CTO.

Unlike Spiegel, Bobby Murphy has maintained a decidedly low profile since Snapchat's early days.

As cofounder and Chief Technology Officer, Murphy leads Snap’s engineering and research teams. He's also involved with a top-secret team called Snap Labs that works on hardware projects like the Spectacles camera glasses.

Murphy and Spiegel each wield 44% of Snap's voting stock, giving them complete control over the company's future. While Murphy's base salary in 2016 was only $250,000, his large stake in Snap places his net worth at roughly $3 billion.

Murphy and Spiegel's friendship goes back to when they were both in the same fraternity at Stanford.

Spiegel, a product design student, needed someone to write the source code for the app that would become Snapchat. He recruited Murphy, a mathematics and computational science major, after the two had finished working on a failed startup called Future Freshman.

Imran Khan is a former banker who now leads Snap's business strategy.

Imran Khan jumped from the banking world to the tech world in January 2015 when he joined Snap as its Chief Strategy Officer. His connections quickly helped Snap land a $200 million investment from Alibaba — he was the lead banker for the Chinese retail company's IPO — and an additional $1.8 billion in funding in May 2016.

One of Spiegel's direct reports, Khan's main job at Snap is to lead its business strategy and help grow its fledgling ad business. He's one of the few executives besides Spiegel to represent the company publicly at events, and like Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, he's working on telling the story of Snapchat to make it more appealing to marketers.

Read our full profile of Khan for more on how he worked his way up to quarterbacking two of the largest tech IPOs in history.

13 signs that your relationship will last

Everybody likes to think that their relationship is ready to withstand the long haul. And while no one knows for sure what the future may hold, there are quite a few clues that can tell you if your partnership is built to last.

INSIDER spoke with relationship experts to find out some key traits that long-lasting relationships have.

You trust each other.

Trust is the cornerstone of any healthy partnership. With it, your relationship can thrive and withstand even the biggest challenges. Without it, you'll be ill-equipped to take on the really tough stuff.

"It is difficult to be vulnerable and share problems with others,"therapist Kimberly Hershenson told INSIDER. "When a partner is able to open up to you, it is important to not break their trust."

This trust means that not only do you avoid blabbing about their childhood secrets when you've had one too many glasses of red wine, but also that you can trust each other not to let the other down.

You have similar goals.

Sometimes a relationship's success isn't determined just by how much work each partner puts in or their personalities. Sometimes it's all up to chance.

If you and your partner have similar goals that would take you to similar places, that is a big factor in determining if you're in it for the long haul, therapist Jim Seibold told INSIDER

This is a good reminder than you should be having frequent chats about what you want out of the relationship, and life, in regards to kids, marriage, jobs, and location.

You're keeping up your physical intimacy.

It probably goes without saying that being unhappy with your sex life can be a strain on your relationship and could even cause a split. But physical intimacy comes in many forms, all of which are important.

Even if you're not getting it on every single night, showing even the slightest form of physical affection can keep the relationship strong

"You physically touch each other," Hershenson said. "Whether it's a kiss hello or goodbye, snuggling on the couch, or holding hands. Even non-sexual touching builds connection between partners."

These eerily empty street photos show how different New York City was in the crime-ridden 1970s

Riddled with crime, and on the brink of bankruptcy, New York City was a very different place 40 years ago. Unlike most New Yorkers, photographer Langdon Clay spent much of the 1970s walking around Manhattan alone in the middle of the night.

It certainly wasn't the safest way to spend his time, but "being young and foolish can have its advantages," Clay told Business Insider.

While roaming the streets, Clay documented the city's cars, peacefully parked and left for the night, reflecting the neon signs and street lights. Though the photographic focus is on the cars, it's hard to ignore the fact that there are very rarely any other people in the shot. Clay's book, "Cars — New York City 1974-1976," is a collection of photos of a New York City that will probably never be that eerily quiet again.

Clay moved to New York City in 1971. 1,691 murders were reported in the city the following year.

By 1975, the city had to agree to deep budget cuts to avoid bankruptcy.

In those days, the city was "mostly broke," Clay said. He referenced a New York Daily News headline that read "(President) Ford to City: Drop Dead!" after city officials had gone to Washington "hat in hand.""But I didn't notice much of that," Clay said.
