These are 8 of the most stylish jackets guys can wear this fall

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

ledeAs summer quickly comes to an end, it's already time to start preparing your wardrobe for fall.

Depending on where you live or what time of day it is, autumn temperatures can be relatively warm or almost winter-like.

Fall fashion is all about layers, and the most important one is your jacket or coat. Having the right selection of jackets will keep you prepared for moderate fall days, cold fall nights, and everything in between.

In addition to staying dressed appropriately for the weather, jackets are some of the best pieces of clothing to showcase your style. Unlike the summer, when short sleeved t-shirts and polos are go-to attire, the added layer of a jacket can elevate an otherwise simple outfit.

Whether dressing casually or professionally, there are plenty of jackets out there that are perfect for fall. Denim jackets, bombers, peacoats, and windbreakers are just a few of the many styles available.

If you're looking for a jacket that will keep you warm and stylish this season, check out 8 of the best stylish jackets for fall below:

Levi's Sherpa Trucker Jacket

Levi's Sherpa Trucker takes the classic denim jacket and enhances it for the season. Denim jackets are traditionally very light and require additional layering underneath to keep warm, but this one is lined with Sherpa on the inside and collar and its sleeves are insulated.

What I like most about this jacket is that I can wear a light layer underneath without being cold.

Levi's Sherpa Trucker Jacket, $128

Alpha Industries MA-1 Blood Chit

Bomber or flight jackets are one of my favorite jacket styles to wear in the fall, and Alpha Industries makes the best one I've worn. The brand is known for its authentic military style and the MA-1 Blood Chit is a testament to that.

Inspired by the Vietnam War, this bomber features the "Blood Chit" flag on the inside. The flag was worn by soldiers and contained a message in several languages to identify an airman as a U.S. Aviator. If they were shot down, the Blood Chit asked to aid the airman in avoiding capture and in being returned safely to U.S. Forces.

Alpha Industries MA-1 Blood Chit, $150

Schott NYC Slim Fit Wool Blend Peacoat

While the peacoat originated as a jacket for sailors, it has transitioned into the perfect style for professional. Its warm wool material and high collar are ideal for late fall and can even be worn into the winter.

We ranked the 'Game of Thrones' characters by leadership abilities — here's how they did in the intense season finale

Jon Snow Davos

Warning: "Game of Thrones" spoilers ahead.

• HBO's "Game of Thrones" wrapped up Sunday night with an intense finale.

• The show's numerous characters all attempted to out-maneuver one another, as usual.

• Several standout leaders made important choices as the army of the dead broke through the Wall.

Winter has truly come to Westeros, with snowflakes falling as far south as King's Landing.

And, with the Wall destroyed and the army of the dead on the march, the continent could surely use some good leadership at the moment.

A few weeks ago, we ranked the "Game of Thrones" characters based on their leadership abilities. So here's an update, based on all that happened in season seven.

A few notes: This list counts only characters who are still alive on the show, not in the books. So keep in mind that a bunch of people have died recently.

Also, this list takes into consideration only people who could be counted as "leaders." Some characters who aren't currently in leadership roles are not included, like Arya Stark, Jaime Lannister, Jorah Mormont, or Sandor Clegane. The same goes for anyone who is basically out of commission at this point.

Lastly, this ranking looks into characters' track records but heavily favors things that happened this season. This list examines leadership ability, not overall power, importance, or title.

Here are the leaders of "Game of Thrones" that survived season seven, ranked from worst to best:

SEE ALSO: We ranked the remaining 'Game of Thrones' leaders by their abilities — here's how they're doing this week

Honorable mention: The Night King

It's not really fair to count the Night King as a "leader." He's the supreme ruler of an army of humanoid ice creatures and dead things. It's not as if he has to apply any leadership skills when it comes to directing his minions. The White Walkers and wights aren't in much of a position to mutiny or even question his will.

That being said, the Night King has had a productive season. And now that's he's converted poor Viserion into an ice dragon, shattered the Wall, and sent his dreaded forces marching southward, his grand plans seem to be snowballing.

9. Euron Greyjoy

Euron was definitely the least valuable member of the epic meeting between Cersei's retinue and Daenerys' squad.

First, the obnoxious pirate interrupted Tyrion by threatening Yara's life and demanding that Theon submit to him. Because the get together was definitely all about sorting out Greyjoy family drama, right?

Next, he strolled around and harassed Tyrion before Cersei ordered him to take a seat.

And then, once the cat was out of the bag — or, rather, the wight was out of the crate — Euron seemed to peace out, admitting to everyone that he was terrified of the snarling, decaying zombie.

Of course, it later turned out that Greyjoy's exit was merely a ploy, and that he was still eager to woo and wed Cersei. Still, his rudeness, ineffective bluster, and general sleaziness illustrate why Euron's leadership abilities are eye-roll-inducing when it comes to scenarios that don't involve fiery, nautical sneak attacks.

8. Yohn Royce

Yohn Royce hasn't been in the spotlight at all this season, but he is one of House Arryn's most powerful bannermen and a skilled military commander to boot.

In the season finale, Royce had one strong moment as a leader. During the trial of Littlefinger, Royce asserted that the forces of the Vale would not assist him, despite the fact that he was the Lord Protector of the Vale. Of course, Littlefinger was completely outgunned in that situation, but it was still a good call.

Echo Whole Foods

Amazon now officially owns Whole Foods — and the grocery chain is already transforming.

On Monday, Amazon's $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods formally went through.

It was immediately clear that this wasn't a gradual transfer of power or slow evolution. Instead, Whole Foods slashed prices overnight. The price of grass-fed ground beef dropped to $6.99 a pound from $10.99, and bananas went from $0.79 to $0.49.

Amazon and Whole Foods announced on Thursday their plans to cut prices but didn't get into the nitty gritty of how the experience of shopping at the grocery chain would change.

So on Monday, Business Insider visited a Whole Foods in Brooklyn, New York, to see how Amazon's acquisition was immediately affecting the grocery chain.

The Whole Foods location, which opened in 2013, looked unchanged when I showed up at 7:59 a.m., before its 8 a.m. opening.

However, the moment I entered the store, it was clear that Amazon had taken over.

Nestled next to the local veggies was a "pick of the season" of a different kind: the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. According to Amazon, the popular voice-controlled speaker system will be available at select Whole Foods locations.

The 12 biggest questions we have after the 'Game of Thrones' season 7 finale

0
0

Jon Snow Davos

Warning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven episode seven, "The Dragon and the Wolf."

This week's episode of "Game of Thrones" set up a gloomy, zombie-ridden future for our heroes in Westeros. The Night King has officially arrived in Westeros, but Cersei privately refuses to join the fight while publicly stating she intends to.

After a show-and-tell starring a wight in King's Landing, a lot of character storylines move forward. The Stark children stage an epic betrayal of the man responsible for instigating everything that started the war that killed their family members. Jaime finally turns on Cersei, and the Night King takes down the wall with a newly resurrected Viserion.

But with the ice settled, we still have some burning questions that will keep us awake at night until season eight.

Here are all the biggest questions we have after this week's season finale of "Game of Thrones":

SEE ALSO: All the biggest moments from the explosive 'Game of Thrones' season 7 finale

When did the Stark children's plan to betraying Littlefinger begin?

Exactly how thoroughly did Littlefinger get played? Was this planned the whole time or only after Littlefinger pitted Sansa and Arya against each other? When did Bran tell his sisters what he knew?

The pivotal moment for Sansa and Arya could've been in "Beyond the Wall," when Arya hands the dagger to Sansa. Or they could've been playing Littlefinger the whole time, fabricating their tension so he wouldn't suspect a thing until it was too late. Our guess is the latter.

Even though Bran is strange now, he is definitely still loyal to his family, which makes us think that the Stark children had this thing planned the whole time. There's no way Bran withheld all he knew about Littlefinger until he noticed his sisters were maybe going to murder each other.

Will Jon Snow (Aegon Targaryen) accept the Targaryen tradition of incest and continue his relationship with Daenerys? Or will he end it immediately?

The scene with Jon and Theon in the Dragonstone throne room solidifies Jon's status as a Stark, no matter who his father is. Even if Stark blood doesn't truly flow through his veins (again, Jon doesn't know this yet), Jon explains to Theon that Ned Stark will always be their father.

Jon will probably be a bit traumatized when he learns his affair with Dany was technically incest, and he could choose to abandon the relationship. Incest is frowned upon in the North, and we're betting he won't abandon his morals because of his newly found identity. He is Jon Snow and he is moral to a fault, just like Ned.

Will Jon accept his true status and compete with Daenerys for the Iron Throne?

Jon admits this often: He does not want to rule. He does it because he has to. It's his obligation, like being a brother of the Night's Watch, to protect his people. He has bent the knee to Queen Daenerys.

But what will he do when he finds out he has a better claim to the throne than she does? Will he compete with her, or let her take it in his place, so he can stay in the North?

Every detail and diss you may have missed in Taylor Swift's new music video

0

taylor swift look what you made me do

Taylor Swift premiered her music video for "Look What You Made Me Do" Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The video shows Swift channeling past versions of herself from old music videos along with blink-and-you'll-miss-them moments of recent events. Fans have been dissecting the music video's hidden details and possible references to some of her rivals and exes since its debut.

INSIDER rounded up a bunch of references you may have missed the first time watching from eagle-eyed Redditors and ones we caught from several views. Keep reading to see them all.

If you spotted a good one we missed, let us know. Email me at kacuna@thisisinsider.com

The video starts with a direct nod to Swift's song "Out of the Woods."

A zombie version of Swift pops up from underneath the Earth's surface wearing a gown that's reminiscent of one she wore in the music video for her song "Out of the Woods."

At the time, the blue dress was reportedly a nod to a similar dress Swift was photographed in after her breakup with Harry Styles.

Not too long after, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris.

Look closely at the tombstone next to zombie Swift and you'll notice a tombstone with the name Nils Sjoberg. That's the pseudonym Swift used to write ex Calvin Harris' "This Is What You Came For" which he performs with Rihanna.

Guess the singer buried her alter ego along with the old Swift.

Take a quick look in Swift's diamond bathtub and you'll see a reference to her recent legal win.

In August, Swift was in court over two lawsuits from an alleged assault incident that occurred in 2013. DJ David Mueller sued Swift after he was fired for allegedly grabbing the singer's butt before a concert. Swift counter sued Mueller for $1, accusing him of assault. She ended up winning both cases.

If you look closely in the pile of diamonds you can see a single dollar.

15 ways to work smarter — instead of just working more

0

Whether you're working a traditional 9-to-5 gig or running your own business, we all struggle with productivity. The good news? That struggle will be a thing of the past if you implement these 15 scientifically-proven methods for increasing your productivity.

SEE ALSO: There are 3 habits that waste the bulk of your time at work — and you probably don't realize you're doing them

1. Track your time.

Time tracking will boost your productivity by allowing you to see how much time you've spent on a task. Whether the task is invoicing or emailing, the tracking will be be done the same.

You will also know how much time you've wasted. Have you counted all the times you've checked your phone when you receive a notification?

Researchers found people who were assigned to wear a pedometer walked at least one extra mile per day on average. It also improved their overall activity levels by 27%.

There are hundreds of companies that offer everything from clock timers and time sheets to automated business process features. You can get faster at invoicing, project management, collaboration platforms, payroll software, and more. I recommend choosing the right calendar to help with this.

However, choosing the best time tracking tool for you can be overwhelming. The good news is we've already put together a list of 101 time tracking companies for you to check out.

2. Unplug every 90 minutes.

If you're like most people, you're probably busy responding to emails on the morning commute. You may be answering the phone whenever you have a break. You're working non-stop. This is not as uncommon of an occurrence as previously believed. But, we weren't designed to work like that.

The fact is that our bodies and minds actually follow a daily cycle called a circadian rhythm; "...these are the physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle. These respond primarily to light and darkness in an organism's environment."

It's the same rhythm we follow for healthy sleep patterns. We shift between several 90 minute cycles of truly deep restorative sleep. This sleep is then followed by a lighter, dream-filled REM sleep.

When it comes to productivity research shows that going full-throttle for eight hours straight goes against this design. We cycle through ultradian rhythms. In other words, the brain can only focus for 90 to 120 minutes before it needs a break.

That's why it's suggested that you carve your workday into a trio of 90-minute chunks. This change will put you in the patter or order, to achieve maximum productivity.

3. Take a nap.

Yes, you read that correctly. Studies have found that taking a 20 minute nap in the afternoon can make you more productive. A little nap will recharge, refresh, and reinvigorate both the body and the brain. Naps also make you feel more relaxed and will extend your life by preventing risks like heart attacks.

No wonder Google, Pfizer, Proctor & Gamble, and Saatchi & Saatchi have added Energy Pods (or Sleep Pods) to their work spaces.

NASA's twin Voyager probes are the most important spacecraft ever launched — and could be the last evidence of humanity's existence

voyager spacecraft probe golden records nasa jpl 540489main_pia14113 full_full

About 1 billion years from now, the sun will begin to die, blow off its outer atmosphere, and engulf our tiny planet in hot plasma.

Luckily, the galaxy will have NASA's twin Voyager spacecraft to remember us by.

The two nuclear-powered probes launched 40 years ago and became the first and only robots to take close-up photographs of Uranus and Neptune, the planets' moons and rings, and other objects in the outer solar system.

The Voyagers also carried with them a golden record of sounds, images, and other information about life on Earth — a basic human catalog that aliens might one day discover and decode.

The mission is now detailed in a remarkable PBS documentary called "The Farthest", which premiered on August 23 and will re-air on September 13 at 10 p.m. ET.

"Fifty years from now, Voyager will be the science project of the 20th century," Brad Smith, a Voyager imaging scientist, said in the movie.

Here's why many scientists and engineers not only hail Voyager as the farthest, fastest, and longest-lived space mission, but also one of humanity's greatest endeavors.

NASA began working on the Voyager mission in 1972 with a budget of $865 million, or roughly $5 billion in 2017-adjusted dollars.

The goal was to tour the outer solar system using a planetary alignment that happens just once every 176 years. The gravity of the planets would speed up the spacecraft, allowing at least one probe to visit Uranus and Neptune for the first time.

NASA worried that Jupiter's radiation fields might short-circuit the Voyagers. So engineers shielded and grounded cables of the probes with kitchen-grade aluminum foil. (It worked.)

Here's what it was like spending a whole day photographing the solar eclipse

While not in the path of totality, I found myself during eclipse weekend on a homestead in the heart of central Pennsylvania.

homestead australian shepherdHere, all food comes from the garden. To my amazement, I gazed upon a row of melons seeming right at home above the Mason-Dixon.

Sunday was a chance to walk the property and enjoy the company of our host and their animals. My girlfriend Rika and I had come here initially to stay for a night, after visiting a friend playing a gypsy jazz gig nearby. With the eclipse around the corner, we decided to stay, and thankfully our hosts were able to accommodate the extension with an unused camper. What started as a relaxing weekend became an opportunity to see the solar eclipse in a more rural setting, away from the light pollution and atmospheric haze of the city.

Afterwards, I thought it may be useful to share the experience and challenges of what at first seemed like a simple task: shooting the sun.

On the morning of the eclipse, I pulled out my gear to practice on the full sun. Mostly clear skies were a good sign though by no means indicative of what was to come.

GEAR: Camera, Adapter, Lens

The lens pictured above has a tripod mount seen just above the quarter. This helped me stabilize the motion, as even a good gust of wind could cause problems at such a long focal length. I also used Canon's EOS utility for remote shooting from a laptop, to minimize motion problems caused by pushing the shutter button.

14 famous mother and daughter duos who have been in movies together

0

Meryl Streep Mamie Gummer

Kids sometimes follow in their parents footsteps. For these mother and daughter duos, that means stepping in front of the camera.

Some roles consist of these moms and daughters playing relatives on-screen, like Demi Moore playing Rumer Willis' mom in "Striptease." But others have no relation at all, like Angelina Jolie and daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt in "Maleficent."

Acting for these duos just runs in the family.

Here are 14 mothers and daughters who have been on-screen together.

Leslie Mann and her two daughters, Maude and Iris Apatow, first appeared in husband/dad Judd Apatow's "Knocked Up."

Mann and her two daughters returned for "This Is 40," playing the same characters from "Knocked Up," and were also in "Funny People."

Mann told the Hollywood Reporter that she feels"lucky" to work with her daughters, even if she has more to pay attention to.

"With Maude and Iris, I just feel lucky that I get to be with them all day, but it's also hard, because I'm mom and I'm also working," she said. "So if they're having problems or they hurt themselves or they're fighting with each other, I have to deal with that and put out that fire and I have to work, so it's like double the amount of work."

Meryl Streep and her eldest daughter Mamie Gummer portrayed mother and daughter in "Ricki and the Flash."

During "Ricki's" premiere, Gummer admitted to People that she was nervous during certain scenes because she didn't want to hurt her mom's feelings.

"There's this one scene where I really was quite eviscerating and I was worried about if my words actually wounded her, but after the first take, I looked over and she just had this big grin on her face, so that was a pleasant surprise," she said.

Gummer made her onscreen debut as a toddler alongside her mother in "Heartburn," but she was credited as Natalie Stern to avoid the publicity.

Gummer played a younger version of her mother in the drama "Evening."

Vanessa Redgrave and daughter Natasha Richardson played mother and daughter in "Evening."

The two reunited onstage for a concert production of "A Little Night Music" shortly before Richardson's untimely death. They had been preparing to costar in a Broadway revival of the show.

Fall is just around the corner, which makes now the perfect time to transition your summer hairstyle into something fresh and new.

According to a recent Pinterest style report, shorter haircuts are all the rage and have seen a dramatic spike in searches when compared to last year. INSIDER also predicts that longer hairstyles such as loose waves, braids and up-dos might be a big hit this fall, too.

Here are 13 celeb-inspired looks to consider trying this upcoming season.

Shag haircuts are making a huge comeback. Consider parting your hair to the side like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for an even sassier look.

Pinterest told us that searches for shag haircuts are up by 220% from 2016.

Braided extensions like Kelly Rowland's individual box braids protect your hair from daily manipulation.

Pro tip: Wearing a silk headscarf to bed at night will keep your hairline from becoming too thin.

Show off your most prominent facial features with a bold pixie cut.

Pro tip: If your hair is naturally coarse, foaming lotion and a half-inch ceramic flat iron are two essential tools that will help you maintain this style.

Use the lotion to mold and set wet hair. Once dry, smooth out the longer sections of your hair with a fine-toothed comb and use the flat iron to tame any fly-away strands.

Trump just reauthorized police to use high-tech military gear — Here's what they can get

Ferguson

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Monday that President Donald Trump plans to loosen federal restrictions on local police agencies obtaining surplus weapons and equipment from the US military.

The weapons transfer program, called the 1033 Program, was established by Congress in 1990, and has since allowed local law enforcement agencies to acquire more than $5.4 billion in weapons and equipment, according to the Washington Post.

Former President Barack Obama signed an executive order in 2015 that restricted certain weapons from being transferred, like grenade launchers, because he worried that these weapons and equipment could create an "us versus them" mentality, like in the events in Ferguson, Mo.

When Sessions made the announcement in front of the Fraternal Order of Police, he reportedly received a "roaring applause."

Here's what law enforcement agencies can now get.

Camouflage uniforms.

Camouflage uniforms are mostly used by SWAT officers, but critics, like Obama, worried that it could create an “us versus them” mentality.

The Law Enforcement Equipment Working Group that made recommendations to Obama in 2015 also noted that wearing camouflage uniforms in urban settings does not actually camouflage the officer.

However, "solid‐color utility uniforms are not listed on the Prohibited or Controlled Equipment Lists and may continue to be acquired through Federal programs," Law Enforcement Equipment Working Group said.

Bayonets.

"This type of equipment is likewise seen as incompatible with the concept of civilian law enforcement, particularly when other equipment, such as a utility knife, could be used for ordinary and other legitimate law enforcement purposes," Law Enforcement Equipment Working Group said.

Weapons of .50 caliber or higher.

Weapons above 0.50 caliber, such as the Browning .50 caliber machine gun seen above, are also on the prohibited list because they are "very destructive and capable of penetrating structures and lightly armored vehicles," Law Enforcement Equipment Working Group said.

Here’s a look at the Russian spy plane that’s flying close to US-South Korea military exercises

Russian A-50U

Russia performed an unusual mission last week, sending jets, nuclear bombers and a surveillance plane around the Korean Peninsula while the US and South Korea conducted joint military exercises.

Su-35S fighter jets, Tupolev-95MS bombers and an A-50U early warning and control aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.

Seoul has accused Russian aircraft of violating its air defense identification zone, but also said their air space had not been violated. South Korea and Japan fighters eventually intercepted them.

Prior to the mission, Moscow had spoken out against the joint US and South Korea military exercises, arguing that they do "not help reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

But the US and South Korea say that the annual Ulchi-Freedom Guardian drills, which Pyongyang has also accused of raising tensions, are defensive in nature.

The drills, which include 17,500 US troops and 50,000 South Korean troops, are "computer simulated defensive exercise designed to enhance readiness, protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula."

The surveillance plane that Moscow sent near the drills, the A-50U, is a "giant flying data processing center" used to detect "and [track] a number of aerial (fighter jets, bombers, ballistic and cruise missiles), ground (tank columns) and surface (above-water vessels) targets,"according to Sputnik, a Russian state-owned media outlet.

It also informs "command centers about the developments in the air and sea, and directing fighter and strike aviation."

Based off the Ilyushin Il-76 airframe, the A-50U can track surface targets up to 186 miles and aerial targets up to 373 miles.

The entire length of the Korean Peninsula is about 684 miles.

The A-50U's dome on top, which Russian crews call the "mushroom," is a 36-foot diameter Shmel-M radar consisting of two antennas that rotates at 6 times per minute.

The Shmel-M radar "works in a quasi-constant search mode," according to The National Interest.
