18 women you don’t remember from history

Ada Lovelace

Women have brought countless amazing contributions to society throughout history, yet their accomplishments have often been passed over due to their gender.

From successfully getting an astronaut into space to leading the suffragette movement, these women have done remarkable things.

Credit where credit is due. Here are 19 women you probably don’t remember from history, but should.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton helped organize the world's first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls in 1848. She also helped form the National Women's Loyal League with Susan B. Anthony, and co-established the National Woman Suffrage Association, which ultimately helped women in the US gain the right to vote.

Jeannette Rankin

Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to US Congress, and served two terms in the House of Representatives. She was also a lobbyist for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and lead 5,000 people in an anti-Vietnam War march in Washington, D.C.

Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was a famous dancer and performer, becoming the first person of color to star in a major motion picture (the 1934 film "Zouzou"). Refusing to perform for segregated audiences in the US, she's also known for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. If that all wasn't enough, she was also a spy for the French Resistance during WWII, as she smuggled messages in her sheet music.

Who was the smartest, dumbest, luckiest, and most emotional this week on 'Game of Thrones'

$

Tormund and Beric Game of ThronesWarning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode seven, "The Dragon and the Wolf." If you aren't caught up on the series, read at your own risk.

Every week the game of thrones changes. You can win one week, and lose the next.

This week there was a lot of sitting and talking, very few deaths, a zombie dragon and some cringeworthy incest.

Every week, we've rounded up which character was the smartest, dumbest, luckiest, and more in our power rankings.

Here's the "Game of Thrones" power rankings based on the season seven finale, "The Dragon and the Wolf":

SEE ALSO: The 12 biggest questions we have after the 'Game of Thrones' season 7 finale

The smartest: Gilly

When Sam talks to Bran Stark about Jon Snow's real parents, Bran says that Jon's real last name is Sand.

"it's not," says Sam. "At the Citadel, I transcribed a High Septon's diary. He annulled Rhaegar's marriage to Elia. He wed Rhaegar and Lyanna in a secret ceremony."

Sorry, Sam. But that was Gilly. Gilly! We're hoping that Sam eventually gives her the credit she deserves.

The dumbest: Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion does have an amazing scene with Cersei, where he pretty much begs her to kill him. She doesn't.

But the joke is actually on Tyrion. Tyrion thinks he's convinced his sister to work with him to defeat the Night King. He thinks Mission: Capture A Wight and Show It To My Sister and She Will Help Us! really worked.

Yes, the wight terrified her. But not enough to help. Cersei is lying, and plans to chill in King's Landing while they do all the hard work. The fact that Tyrion doesn't see this coming after all of the mistakes he's made in season seven is mind-blowing.

The luckiest: Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion

We're not 100% they survived the Night King's attack on Eastwatch, but we're pretty sure they made it to the new edge of the Wall. If they died, the moment would've been captured on screen. Plus, someone has to survive to tell everyone that the Night King has a dragon now.

12 times the royal family broke their own protocol

$

royal familyThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Given how public their lives are, the royal family has extensive protocol to follow to maintain their image.
  • But that doesn't mean they don't break the rules from time to time.
  • From giving out hugs and autographs to traveling together, these are 12 times the royal family broke their own protocol.

When Princess Diana didn’t act like a royal

The People’s Princess is most remembered for her frank, approachable attitude. She openly discussed her eating disorder and the importance of mental health. She met HIV positive patients and hugged them. She gave candid interviews about her failing marriage with Prince Charles. While her manner of conduct was not expected from a member of the royal family, it was very much appreciated by the public.

When Princess Diana picked her engagement ring

We already know Princess Diana had an incredible sense of fashion, and her taste in jewelry is no exception. After Prince Charles proposed, she got an engagement ring with a 12-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. However, she didn’t get it custom made as royal brides-to-be usually do. She selected hers from a Garrard jewelry collection catalog. Critics called it the “commoner’s sapphire” for that reason, even though it looks anything but common. Prince William used that exact ring when he proposed to Kate Middleton, and the Duchess still wears it today.

When Princess Diana sent her son to public school

With this year marking the 20th anniversary of her death, rare photos of Princess Diana and her sonsare surfacing across the Internet. They capture just how hands-on she was as a mother. She took them to amusement parks, they ate at McDonald’s together, and maybe most surprisingly, she sent them to public school. When Prince William started at Mrs. Jane Mynor’s nursery school at age 3, he became the first heir to the British throne to not start his education within the palace. Prince Harry later joined him at the same school.

The 4 best smart home gadgets you can get for under $100

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Hue stripStarting a smart home is a fun endeavor, but it can also get expensive. Fast.

That doesn't have to be the case, though, and with a little planning and the right products, it's possible to create a smart home on a budget.

The four products on this list all cost under $100, and when used together can make your current home smarter without a lot of extra work.

DON'T MISS: This little-known Amazon service turns stuff you want to get rid of into store credit

SEE ALSO: I've written about a bunch of great smart-home tech, but these are the gadgets I use every day — here's why

A smart-home hub

Every smart home needs a hub.

A hub is how you communicate to all of your smart-home accessories, and in the case of Amazon's Echo Dot I mean that literally.

As someone who uses an Echo product every day, I can attest to the platform's versatility, and being able to control parts of my apartment using my voice still impresses me.

The Echo Dot is just as smart and capable of any other member of the Echo family, but it's smaller and less expensive. If you're starting a smart home on a budget, this is the hub I'd choose.

Echo Dot, $44.99, available at Amazon

Smart plugs

Making the appliances you currently have smarter is significantly less expensive than buying all new ones.

TP-Link's Smart Plugs make retrofitting these still-functional pieces of your home easy. You plug the smart plug into an outlet, connect it to your Wi-Fi and Echo (a process that doesn't take more than a couple of minutes), and plug in your "dumb" appliance.

You'll be able to turn the appliance on and off through TP-Link's app or the Echo Dot, which doesn't make it as smart as a new appliance, but does make it more useful.

Think about your morning routine: There's probably something you have to turn on in another room, like a coffee maker. Wouldn't it be nice to turn it on and have fresh coffee waiting when you're done getting changed? That's the type of luxury smart plugs can provide while still being reasonably priced.

TP-Link Smart Plug, $26.99, available at Amazon

Smart light bulbs

Smart light bulbs are probably the first smart-home accessory people think of when considering starting one.

It's fun to turn your lights on and off with your voice (trust me), but there's also a lot of utility in it. If you have a room where the light switch is in an inconvenient spot, it pays to be able to turn the lights on and off without it.

I've tried a couple of different smart light bulbs, and both have specific pros and cons. TP-Link's option is less expensive, but isn't part of a larger ecosystem of lighting products.

Philips Hue bulbs require a larger upfront investment, but are part of a series of different lights that can be used in different places around your house. Most of the initial cost comes from having to buy a Hue starter pack, which includes a hub. Once you have a hub in the house, you're able to buy different lights a la carte, and it becomes less expensive.

Either way, as someone who started their smart home with bulbs like these, I can highly recommend them.

TP-Link Smart LED Light Bulb, $19.99, available at Amazon

Philips Hue White Bulb Starter Kit, $69.99, available at Amazon

17 reasons why fall is the best time to fall in love

couple fall

It's not hard to tell that people go absolutely nuts over fall. And while you may not go quite as pumpkin-spice crazy as the rest of the world, it's hard to deny that fall is pretty great — especially for couples.

Fall is quickly approaching, so we've rounded up the top reasons why fall is the absolute best time to be in love.

It's finally cuddle weather.

Sure, you can try and cuddle in the summer, but unless you blast the central air, it's just not great. It's too uncomfortable to get close to anyone in the summer.

But in the Autumn, cuddling is at its prime. You can use this opportunity to get close to your partner and steal up their body heat. Don't be ashamed if you spend an extra hour or two ... or all day in bed.

There are lots of creative date activities.

Sure, if you live near a beach or a pool, you can have some great dates in the summer. But fall provides so many more creative ideas for days out with your partner.

Dates that revolve around eating and drinking are always great, but fall lets you base your day out around an activity rather than just a meal.

Go apple picking, to a haunted house, pumpkin picking, hiking, and more, all while taking in the beautiful fall foliage.

You can create an awesome couple's costume.

Halloween is always an awesome excuse to dress up and be creative, but that gets so much easier with a partner.

You can dream up creative couples costume ideas based on pop culture, puns, classic characters, and more. Just be sure to stick together all night so everyone still gets the reference.

On August 24, Victoria's Secret officially announced the lineup for its annual fashion show. This season, 59 models made the cut to walk the runway in Shanghai, China, on November 28.

Victoria's Secret's 14 official Angels — including favorites like Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel  will be joined by 16 newcomers and 29 returning models. While Bella Hadid is one of the latter, it's unclear if Kendall Jenner will be back on the runway. And out of the newcomers, viewers should keep an eye out for promising models like Aiden Curtiss, Frida Aasen, and Xin Xie.

While fans count down to the fashion show, here are the models who have been confirmed to walk the runway.

Adriana Lima will return for another season as a Victoria's Secret Angel. The Brazilian model has walked in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show since 1999.

Lima is the longest-serving Victoria's Secret model ever.

This will be Aiden Curtiss's first time walking in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

When the 19-year-old isn't working the runway, she's also a DJ and music producer, according to Vice.

Alanna Arrington, 18, confirmed that she will be back for a second season with Victoria's Secret. She made her debut as a Victoria's Secret runway model in 2016.

In February 2016, at the age of 17, Arrington visited New York City for the first time when she walked in two back-to-back shows — including opening the Altuzzara show, Vogue reported.

Screen Shot 2017 08 29 at 21.13.12On Tuesday night, "The Great British Bake Off" returned to our screens for its first episode on Channel 4. With new judge Prue Leith and presenters Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig in tow, here's the round-up of everything that happened in 'Cake Week'.

As always, the first week in the "Bake off" tent was cake week, and 12 fresh-faced home bakers arrived hopeful and excited.

The picture above shows the new crew in full. From left to right, we have Chris, Yan, Sophie, Julia, Liam, presenter Sandi Toksvig, judge Paul Hollywood, Tom, judge Prue Leith, Peter, presenter Noel Fielding, Stacey, James, Kate, Steven, and Flo.

The first challenge the bakers faced was to create a "fruity" cake. Noel and Sandi told us that the challenge with baking a sponge laden with fresh fruits is making sure the natural moisture doesn't create a soggy sponge.

Serbian-born Julia is the first baker to fall victim to a soggy sponge, and she confesses to Noel that she forgot to drain the excess moisture from her courgette and lemon (!) sponge.

5 hacks an interior decorator has to make your small apartment seem bigger

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Design&Wine_001_web 1

Many of us are working with less space in our homes and apartments than we wish we had, and far fewer of us have access to interior designers on retainer to make the most out of what room we do have.

Larger spaces create a feeling of ease, flexibility, and orderliness while anything that feels too cramped can seem suffocating and stuffy — two things that don’t make it appealing as the epicenter for the majority of your down time.

Most of us know there are some rules about "creating" more space and have an (apparently pretty incorrect) assumption that smaller furniture will trick the mind into believing our cramped studio is never-ending.

Especially when working with the confines of New York City, you start to appreciate the tricks that optimize your space. And while the majority of us find our own shortcuts eventually, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Relying on your own intuition and spatial awareness when parallel parking is still a struggle, and certainly isn't the most direct way to maximize your home, wasting your time and money in a living space less comfortable than it should be.

So we asked Kate Lester of Kate Lester Interiors to help us out with some expert advice. Below are her life hacks for creating the illusion of a larger space within the smaller one you're working with:

DON'T MISS: The 10 best purchases I've made to save space in my small apartment

1. Create the illusion of more windows and extra light with mirrors:

Mirrors are a simple way of reflecting light and tricking the eye into thinking there are more windows in a space. Even better when the mirror is hung adjacent to a window and reflects the outdoor scenery!

Budget-friendly pick: Umbra Mira Wall Mirror, $80

Luxury pick: Pottery Barn Iris Mirror, $399

2. Buy larger nightstands:

The biggest misconception about small spaces is that people think they should contain small furniture. The best way to make a small bedroom feel larger is to anchor the bed with two wide nightstands. Three drawer chests are a great solution because they also offer extra clothes storage, which comes at a premium in a small apartment.

Budget-friendly pick: Hives and Honey Vintage Night Stand, $299.99

Luxury pick: Gabby Home Terrance Chest, $1,248

3. Hang window coverings close to the ceiling:

Drapes and woven shades are a great way to add softness to small space, but they can also make your room bigger! (Sort of.) By mounting them at the ceiling like we did here, it gives the illusion that the windows are taller and immediately draws your eye up. Viola! Instant height and openness.

Budget-friendly pick: Chicology Deluxe Free-Stop Cordless Roller Shade, $49.99 - $129.99

Luxury pick: Special Order Bali Roller Shades, $220 -$476

US Army Abrams tank

Members of the US Army's 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team from the 4th Infantry Division deployed to Europe in January in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

As their time in Europe draws to a close, "Iron Brigade" members took part in the Combine Resolve IX live-fire exercise at Grafenwoehr training area in southeast Germany from August 19 to 24.

The drill saw tanks and mechanized infantry work with artillery, combat engineers, close-air support, and unmanned aerial reconnaissance in a mock defensive engagement, focusing on maneuvering with speed against a conventional opponent.

Combined Resolve IX is "a culminating event for our readiness progression as well as the deployment," Army Maj. Michael Harrison, operations officer for the brigade, said this week. "This strengthens our readiness and ability to fight as a brigade."

The exercise was the sixth brigade-level combined-arms live-fire drill the Iron Brigade has done in the past 13 months — four of them have taken place during the unit's nine-month Atlantic Resolve rotation, which started when they arrived in Europe in January.

"We are very well trained," Harrison said. "When we go back to Fort Carson, Colorado, our level of readiness will be extremely high, especially when we transition back to our own training area."

Before they return stateside, however, members of the unit took apart an Abrams tank for maintenance, showing off some of the heavy metal that powers the 'Iron Brigade.'

The M1 Abrams tank was introduced in 1980, replacing the M60 tank. It first saw action in the Gulf War in 1991. The original M1 was followed by the M1A1 and M1A2 variants. As of 2013, more than 9,000 of them have been delivered to the US military.

The 15 most annoying types of cruise ship passengers, ranked

$
0
0

cruise ship

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Cruise ship passengers can have some annoying habits for both staff and fellow guests.
  • Some annoying behaviors include yelling in the hallways and cutting in line.
  • It's also important to be respectful of other cultures while on a cruise to a foreign country.

It's a fact of vacation life: You can pick where you cruise to and on which line you cruise, but you can't choose who else is on the cruise ship. And sometimes, your fellow cruise ship passengers won't behave the way you want them to. In fact, they may act downright annoying. Inspired by our recent story on the 15 most annoying types of plane passengers, we decided to come up with a comparable list for cruise ship travelers. But don't despair! Cruise ships are enormous, and if someone else's behavior is bringing down your vacation vibe, it's easy enough to walk (or swim) away.

15. The one who hogs the treadmill

Most cruise ships come with free access to a gym, but the size can vary, and occasionally, there aren't enough cardio machines to go around. The Norwegian Breakaway has a small gym for the approximately 5,000-passenger ship. That means lines for the treadmills, which overlook the sea, can be long, especially on bad weather days when the demand for indoor activities is high. The clueless cruiser who spends more than 30 minutes on a treadmill when there's a line behind them comes in at number 15 on our list.

14. The one who takes the elevator one floor

Unless you have mobility issues, luggage, or small children, there's no reason to take an elevator for a one- or two-floor ride. Crowded elevators are a real problem on cruise ships, and laziness makes the wait times and tight squeeze even worse. Be less annoying and take the stairs.

13. The cruise ship one-upper

Cruise ships are convivial places, and it's not uncommon to chat with fellow cruisers in restaurants, bars, and by the pool. But there's one type of cruiser we'd like to avoid: the one-upper. Whether this is your first cruise or your 50th, the one-upper has sailed farther and seen better. Prepare to have even the tiniest details of cruising explained to you like you're an amateur without a passport.

Military gear is designed with one purpose and one purpose only — functionality.

While blending in with a surrounding environment or staying warm are the biggest functions for a soldier's attire, they're also very fashionable.

With fall right around the corner, incorporating a military-inspired jacket in your wardrobe will bring you the best of both worlds, in terms of function and style.

Whether dressing casually or professionally, there are plenty of military-inspired jackets out there that are perfect for fall.

From aviators and bombers, to peacoats and field jackets, military-inspired attire is a must for your fall wardrobe.

Check out 9 of the best stylish military-inspired jackets below:

Peacoats originated as military-issued coats to keep sailors warm at sea, but have evolved into a stylish choice worn by many. Its warm wool material and high collar are ideal for late fall and even into the winter.

Alpha Industries MA-1 Blood Chit

Bomber or flight jackets are one of my favorite outerwear styles to wear in the fall, and Alpha Industries makes the best one I've worn. The brand is known for its authentic military style and the MA-1 Blood Chit is a testament to that.

Inspired by the Vietnam War, this bomber features the "Blood Chit" flag on the inside. The flag was worn by soldiers and contained a message in several languages to identify an airman as a U.S. Aviator. If they were shot down, the Blood Chit asked to aid the airman in avoiding capture and in being returned safely to U.S. Forces.

Check out these smartglasses designed by $4.5 billion startup Magic Leap

Magic Leap glasses

Magic Leap is a $4.5 billion Florida startup building a highly anticipated pair of smartglasses, and on Tuesday, a set of new smartglasses drawings from the company surfaced in a patent application.

The design patent application, originally filed in 2015, shows a skinny pair of glasses with oval goggle-like frames, and sensors on the right and left-hand sides of the headset. This is Magic Leap's second public design patent application.

The glasses are not Magic Leap's product, said Julia Gaynor, a Magic Leap spokesperson. "As you know, we file lots of patents that take a long time to get approved and so what you are looking at is not our product," she told Business Insider.

However, sources with knowledge of Magic Leap's hardware told Business Insider the design shown in the patent was close to Magic Leap's product in its appearance, but the real hardware is bigger and bulkier, with a section in the middle of the lenses to hold the depth sensor. One person who has previously seen schematics of Magic Leap's product said that the current design has one camera in each arm, not two as illustrated in the patent filing, and that they are "thick-rimmed like hipster glasses," but with bulkier arms.

Investors and other VIPs who received Magic Leap demos in the spring said that the headset they tried was smaller than modern VR headsets but bulkier than other glasses technology like Snapchat's Spectacles. It was described as more like swim goggles worn by swimmers with slightly larger lenses.

Magic Leap Glasses00007

Those demo units were connected to two wearable packs: a battery the size of two iPhones and a computational portion containing the GPU and CPU about the size of a portable CD player. The computing part is worn on the belt while the battery can be slipped into the user's pocket.

Magic Leap is seen as one of the leaders in a hot technology called augmented reality, which uses advanced computers and cameras to integrate graphics into the real world.

Tech giants including Apple and Google (a Magic Leap investor) have recently released software that allows for AR experiences on a phone, but many in the tech industry see the end-game of AR as a pair of smartglasses, like Magic Leap is developing.

Magic Leap declined to comment on whether it would support ARcore, the AR software Google released on Tuesday. "As you know we are building full stack computing — hardware, software, content, etc," Gaynor said.

Magic Leap, which has raised $1.4 billion dollars from investors including Google, Alibaba, and KPCB, has not released a product nor distributed development hardware to software makers. The Financial Times reported earlier this year that the company is preparing its eyeware for a release in 2017.

While the glasses shown the patent filing may be an older, scrapped industrial design — whatever makes it into production will need to have more room for computing — it's still a good peek at the overall look that the startup is going for.

The world's 2 billion unbanked, in 6 charts

Bank of England

LONDON – Two billion people worldwide do not have a bank account or access to a financial institution via a mobile phone, or any other device.

But between 2011 and 2014, 700 million adults became account holders, and the unbanked population fell by 20%, down from 2.5 billion. That's according to the World Bank's Global Financial Inclusion database, based on information from more than 140 countries.

According to the World Bank's data, more than 20% of unbanked adults receive wages or government transfers in cash, and many people in developing countries pay bills and school fees in cash.

2015 working paper said governments and private companies have a "pivotal role" to play in reducing the number of people who are unbanked. Digitising payments, it said, would also help empower women and encourage their economic participation.

Financial inclusion has been seen as key for reducing poverty: bank accounts have an important part to play in the founding and expanding of businesses, making transactions more efficient, secure and transparent and managing savings. However, savings and accounts do not necessarily reduce inequality within a country, and some of the richest countries in the world have the widest gaps between the rich and the poor.

World Bank data also shows:

  • The lack of a bank account does not necessarily preclude borrowing since people borrow more informally, from family, friends or stores on credit.
  • Potential growth regions include India, which is home to 21% of the world's unbanked population, and China, home to about 12%.
  • Women make up just over half (55%) of unbanked people worldwide.
  • The proportion of people with bank accounts worldwide grew from 51% to 62% between 2011 and 2014.

Keep scrolling for an explanation of the world's unbanked, in charts:

The vast majority (94%) of adults in OECD high income countries said they had a bank account in 2014, while only 54% of those in developing countries did. The Middle East had the lowest proportion of account holders, with only 14% on average.

The 8 hottest housing markets in America right now

Sharestates, an online real estate crowdfunding platform, has released its Fall report on the hottest housing markets in the country.

The company processes roughly $36 million in real estate investments each month. Now, its putting the data from all that funding to work by ranking the areas of the country which are seeing the most attention from real estate investors right now.

Not surprisingly, many of the hotspots are in major metropolitan areas like New York City or Philadelphia, but there are some outliers, too, Sharestates founder and CEO Allen Shayanfekr told Business Insider.

"I was surprised to see Kissimmee, Florida to be included in the top 10," he said in an email. "I expected to see almost all of the investment potential in markets in the upper east coast, based on the rapid growth that area continues to see year over year."

Places on the list are ranked by three metrics:

  • Unfortunately, much of the forest is being destroyed by illegal human activities like deforestation and gold mining.

The Amazon is the largest remaining tropical rainforest in the world.

It's a natural wonder that's inhabited by a diverse array of species and ethnic groups.

Sadly, human activity is destroying the rainforest and much of its biodiversity.

The photos below portray an unfortunate juxtaposition between the Amazon's beauty and the forces that are working against it.

The Amazon encompasses most of northwestern Brazil and expands into Colombia and Peru, among other South American countries.

The rainforest spans nearly 2.6 million square miles, an area that's twice the size of India.

We decoded all the different looks in Taylor Swift's music video — here's what they mean

taylor swift look what you made me do

Taylor Swift's music video for "Look What You Made Me Do" is filled with hidden layers and meanings, but it's also jam-packed with a number of Swift doubles from over the years who, according to Swift's new music video, are "dead."

Some of them are easy to spot at the music video's beginning and end standing on their own. 2009 Kanye West-interrupted Swift gets told off and 2014 Met Gala Swift is buried in a grave. However, not every version of Swift gets to be front and center in the video. There are so many other counterparts seen climbing and vying for a top spot atop a giant Swift mountain.

INSIDER has rounded up over 20 old looks we've spotted in the video that Swift is burying. Keep reading to see every Swift we've found.

Zombie Taylor is wearing one of Swift's blue dresses from "Out of the Woods."

"Look What You Made Me Do" opens with a zombified version of the singer. You may not think twice about her outfit until you realize it's the same one she wore in "Out of the Woods."

Swift has said the 2014 song was about "feelings of anxiety" she had in a relationship that was under scrutiny from everyone. It's allegedly about Harry Styles, who the singer dated in late 2012.

Fans think its appearance in "LWYMMD" means the singer never made it out of the woods.

Swift is then buried in her 2014 Met Gala gown.

Swift wore the custom pink Oscar de la Renta gown to the Met Gala months ahead of the release of her album "1989." Many fans are taking this to be a reference to a time before her "reputation," the name of her upcoming sixth album, was tarnished.

Others think the shot of Swift smiling is rooted in something darker. The smiling Swift is thought to be a reference to an interview she gave in 2015 about her anxiety dreams.

"There's a dream that, any time I'm 'paparazzid' out, which is a lot, I have dreams that night that they're in my room taking pictures of me while I'm sleeping! So I'll find myself smiling in my sleep, because I think there are people in my room taking pictures of me," Swift told CapitalFM. "Not smiling because I'm happy, smiling because I think people are taking pictures of me!"

Swift's red dress atop a snake throne resembles ones she and Nicki Minaj wore when performing at the 2015 MTV VMAs.

The cutouts in Swift's tea throne gown remind us a lot of her getup for the Video Music Awards. Swift has had a feud with Minaj in the past. When Minaj's "Anaconda" music video lost out on being nominated at the VMAs to Swift's "Bad Blood," the rapper took to Twitter igniting a back and forth between the two

The two put aside their differences and performed at the VMAs in 2015 (see above). After "LWYMMD" dropped, Minaj happened to tweet out, "N---- sit down. Be humble."

Was she referencing Kendrick Lamar's single or was it some cleverly timed shade?

The best tripods for your camera and one for your smartphone

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

tripods 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Although you can perform basic photography tasks by hand with your smartphone, to take your photos to the next level, you need better equipment, such as a tripod. The lightweight ZOMEI 55-inch Compact Tripod is the best tripod you can buy because it folds down to a small size, but it's sturdy enough to use with all types of cameras.

For many people, photography today is all about simplicity. Grab your smartphone and use it to shoot all of your photos. No extra equipment needed, no fancy camera required, and no complicated settings to figure out.

But as you’ll quickly learn, while you can shoot decent photos with a simple smartphone, the tiny image sensor in the smartphone doesn’t cut it when you're seeking great results. For that, you’ll need a bigger camera, perhaps a great DSLR camera or a nice point-and-shoot camera.

With a great camera in hand, the next piece of equipment that can help you start shooting great photos is a tripod. You can the avoid blurry images you get from holding the camera in your unstable hands by using a tripod because you can shoot steadily while using a slow shutter speed. This opens up a whole new means of creating photos.

As an added benefit, you just look like you know what you’re doing when you’re using a tripod. So let us help you find the right tripod, and then you can at least look like a pro photographer … even if your photography skills haven’t caught up yet.

Tripod features

A tripod looks like a simple piece of equipment, but it has a lot of moving pieces and parts that give it strong capabilities. The more advanced features you want, the more the tripod costs, as explained by Adorama and Steve’s Digicams.

  • Ball head vs. pan-tilt head: A three-way pan tilt head allows you to easily tilt the camera vertically or horizontally, as well as spin it 360 degrees. This is a great feature for shooting odd angle photos or for ensuring the camera is squared up when you have to set the tripod up on uneven ground. A ball head is a simpler lightweight design that you can spin 360 degrees.
  • Carbon fiber vs. aluminum: Modern tripods typically consist of one of two materials in the legs: carbon fiber or aluminum. Carbon fiber tripods cost almost double what aluminum tripods cost. A carbon fiber tripod is lighter than one with aluminum legs, but the aluminum tripod is slightly sturdier. Aluminum legs could show rust spots if they’re exposed to weather over time. Carbon fiber legs may fracture or crack if treated roughly, however.
  • Center column: Although tripods consist of three support legs that hold the majority of the camera’s weight, having a tripod with a sturdy center post helps to balance the entire apparatus better. You often can hang weight from the center column to create a sturdier setup with the tripod.
  • Gimbal head: A gimbal head provides the strength and leverage required to provide balance for a large camera lens and a heavy body. Without this balance, the tripod could tip over.
  • Flip lock vs. twist lock: The tripod’s extendable legs will use one of two mechanisms to lock in place most of the time. The flip lock is a flat switch that flips one way to unlock the legs, allowing them to be extended or retracted, or flips the other way to lock the legs in place. A twist lock works similarly, as twisting it a partial turn one way unlocks the legs and twisting it the other way locks them in place. A flip lock works faster than a twist lock, as Digital Photography School discusses.
  • Removable plate: Most tripods have a rectangular plate that locks into the head of the unit. You can remove this plate, attach it to the tripod screw port on your camera, and then reattach the plate to the tripod head. This greatly simplifies attaching the camera to the tripod, while also protecting you from fumble fingers and dropping the camera while trying to secure it on the tripod. Photo Pro Magazine says this plate also serves as a quick release system, allowing you to remove the camera from the tripod when you need to shoot photos free hand in a hurry.
  • Tripod to monopod: Some tripods offer the ability to transform into a monopod, usually by removing a leg and using it as the monopod.

Tripod sizes

Different sizes of tripods will give you various capabilities, such as self-portrait and HDR photography options, as Photography Life says. Although you may be tempted to purchase the biggest tripod you can afford, a large tripod may not quite meet your needs.

  • Table top: The table top or mini tripod lives up to its name by being extremely small. This compact design carries a sturdy feel, which is great for a heavy camera where you don’t need a height of more than about 12 inches. Mini tripods offer simple designs and are easy to carry. Some people will even mount a mini tripod to a tree or pole to provide a unique perspective for the camera, according to B&H Photo Video.
  • Fixed:A fixed size tripod is pretty rare in today’s market. This type of tripod will have legs that are fixed in length, usually between 18 and 36 inches. Such tripods are sturdy and but don’t offer the flexibility of other options.
  • Adjustable:An adjustable three-legged tripod is the most common option available. These tripods usually fold down to a height of 12 to 24 inches, while offering legs that can expand to 50 inches or more in height. Most of these tripods consist of aluminum and plastic or carbon fiber and plastic that keeps them lightweight but strong. The legs lock in place with clamps after you extend them. Most photographers will hang a bag or other weighted object from the center post of the tripod to keep the tripod from tipping. This type of tripod provides the most versatility, as it’s easy to carry when folded down, while providing numerous height options.

Now that we've got the key terms and things to look for out of the way, let's move on to our top picks. Read on to see which tripod is best for your needs.

Although the ZOMEI 55-Inch Compact Tripod is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Mactrem Q666C Lightweight Carbon Fiber Tripod, the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod Kit, the Rangers 57-Inch Ultra Compact Tripod, and the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod.

The best tripod overall

Why you'll love it: The ZOMEI 55-inch Compact Tripod is one of the most versatile options for photographers of different skill levels who need several functions for a great price.

The ZOMEI 55-inch Compact Tripod provides a lot of versatility, making it a good choice for using in a studio or while traveling. The tripod folds down to 20 inches in height when not in use, but it extends to 55 inches in height when all of the legs are extended fully.

The ZOMEI tripod weighs just 2.6 pounds, making it easy to carry, according to the Shutterfeet review. To keep the tripod steady, you can hang weights from the center post.

It has a pan-tilt head, which allows for plenty of versatility in adjusting the position of the camera. One Amazon reviewer appreciated the quick release plate on this tripod, which makes it easy to shoot photos on or off the tripod. Jen Reviews highlighted the overall versatility of this tripod, which makes it work for many different levels of photographers.

However, a few different Amazon customers disliked using this tripod for shooting video, saying it doesn’t pan smoothly.

The tripod from ZOMEI is available in three different colors, with red, blue, or black aluminum on the legs. The legs use flip locks to quickly extend their length.

Pros: Good price point, sturdy aluminum design, provides plenty of versatility for many levels of photographers, lightweight design for travel, extends to 55 inches in height, folds down as small as 20 inches

Cons: Can’t match maximum height of some more expensive models, doesn’t pan smoothly for video

Buy the ZOMEI 55-inch Compact Tripod on Amazon for $42.99 (originally $80.00)

The best carbon fiber tripod

Why you'll love it: A carbon fiber construction gives the Mactrem Q666C Lightweight Carbon Fiber Tripod the ability to hold your camera stable, even at its tallest setting.

A lightweight carbon fiber tripod can be a great option for photographers on the go, and the Mactrem Q666C tripod is one of the best lightweight and tall models available.

The carbon fiber in the Mactrem Q666C makes use of eight different layers of materials, staggered and cured at high temperatures to improve the strength of the legs. Strength is important because the Q666C can extend its legs to place the tripod head at 64.5 inches in height. You’ll lock the legs in place with a twist lock mechanism. Despite its height, one Amazon customer says this tripod is very sturdy.

The tilt-pan tripod head offers a full range of motion. In fact, you can flip the tripod head 180 degrees to record photos upside down, which the Better Digital Photo Tips review says is a great feature. The Entrusters review mentions the strong capability of the quick release plate to allow you to switch between free hand and tripod shooting almost instantly.

One Amazon reviewer says the instructions that ship with the tripod are so confusing that it’s tough to make use of all of its features, though.

Pros: Tall and sturdy tripod up to 64.5 inches in height, tilt-pan head allows for shooting at almost any angle, carbon fiber material creates lightweight tripod, folds down to small size for travel, handy quick release plate

Cons: Price is a little high, included instructions are confusing

Buy the Mactrem Q666C Lightweight Carbon Fiber Tripod on Amazon for $143.99 (originally $299.99)

The best ball head tripod

Why you'll love it: The Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod Kit offers great versatility in the height of the tripod, as well as a ball head for smooth video recording.

The Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod Kit features a 360-degree rotating ball tripod head that allows for extremely smooth movement of the camera, which is great for shooting video.

The Vanguard 263AB 100 tripod is able to fold down to a height of 28.125 inches and extend to a maximum height of 68.125 inches, giving you great versatility in how you use the tripod. The Wirecutter says the 263AB is a great tripod for a variety of photographers. Even though it carries a high price point, one Amazon reviewer said the tripod offers a very good value.

The Alta Pro tripod weighs about 5.4 pounds, which makes it a little heavier than some other tripods. However, the Photo New Canada review says this tripod has found the right mix between the weight and the stability of the tripod. Pic Stop says carrying the Alta Pro 263AB tripod was easy while hiking.

Additionally, you can shoot photos at far lower heights than 28.125 inches. One of the cooler features of the Alta Pro tripod is the ability to reconfigure the tripod legs to allow for low-angle photography at only several inches above the ground. You can set the legs at a 25-, 50-, or 80-degree angle to the center column. Additionally, you can spin the center column 180 degrees to allow for shooting photos upside down.

However, one Amazon customer said the Alta Pro 263AB broke the first time he used it. It seems to be a rare occurrence, and if it does happen, you can contact the seller or Amazon for a refund or replacement.

Pros: Smooth ball head tripod is great for panning when shooting video, extends to 68.125 inches in height, can change angle of legs for low angle photos, center column can turn 180 degrees, versatile tripod option

Cons: Price is a little higher than average, longevity of tripod is questionable

Buy the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod Kit on Amazon for $168.42

Harvey flooding Houston

Harvey has pummeled Texas with rain since the storm made landfall on Friday, leaving Houston and other areas underwater.

By Tuesday, more than 49 inches of rain had fallen in parts of Houston. Tens of thousands of people have taken refuge in shelters while they wait for the floodwaters to recede. The coastal areas of Rockport and Port Aransas, which are close to where the storm first made landfall, were heavily damaged; the second landfall on Wednesday morning caused dramatic flooding in Beaumont and Port Arthur as well.

The Associated Press flew over the Houston area on Tuesday — here's what the destruction looked like from the air.

The storm submerged entire neighborhoods, like this area in Humble, Texas, next to Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Some homes, like this one in Houston, were covered up to their roofs on Tuesday.

Houses built on a higher elevation, like this one in Houston, fared better — though the surrounding land and roadways were still inundated.
