How to survive your terrible boss, according to a Stanford professor

$

Bob Robert Sutton Stanford

Not everyone is blessed with an excellent boss.

It's an unfortunate reality, considering how terrible managers can wreak havoc on your work productivity, professional development, and stress levels, not to mention the overall organization.

Robert Sutton, a professor of management at Stanford University and author of "The No Asshole Rule" and the upcoming "The Asshole Survival Guide," outlined some strategies for individuals dealing with an unreasonable manager.

Here are five tips he shared with Business Insider on coping with a bad boss:

SEE ALSO: 26 signs you're a good boss — even if it doesn't feel like it

DON'T MISS: 33 things you should never say to your boss

1. Be careful and consider your options

Before you "go to war with a boss," Sutton said it's important to plan out a strategy and proceed with caution.

"As much as we wish that HR would be our friend, very often, if your boss has more power than you, you have to be very careful," he told Business Insider. "Assess the political environment, if you possibly can."

2. Confront the issue

If you think your boss's bad behavior stems from clueless-ness as opposed to maliciousness, it's usually best to politely and calmly point out the problem.

Sutton described meeting a female executive vice president who shared that her CEO had a habit of only interrupting the women in the room during meetings with his senior team.

"What her and her colleague did was, they counted how many interruptions happened during a meeting and they just brought him the information," Sutton says. "He didn't realize he was doing it and he changed his behavior."

3. Grin and bear it

If you're dealing with a narcissistic jerk of a boss and there's no hope that higher ups will intervene, Sutton said it's often not worth fighting back. Narcissists tend to be very thin-skinned, so calling out their nonsense will typically backfire.

Instead, in this case, it's best to use cognitive distancing to protect yourself while you plan an exit strategy.

"When you're in a difficult situation, if you can say to yourself, 'If I can just get through tonight and look back on it over the weekend, six months, a year from now,' stressful situations actually do much less damage on our mental and physical health," Sutton said.

The 2017 US Open Tennis Championships are currently underway in New York City.

The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is handing out a total of $50.4 million, the largest sum of prize money in tennis history. The men's and women's singles champions will each receive a check for $3.7 million.

That's a nice payday in and of itself, but most of the high-ranking players are also locked into endorsements with top sports and luxury brands, banking multiple times their on-court earnings in any given year.

Below, we take a look at the 30 highest-paid tennis players of all time, based on on-the-court winnings. While the list is skewed towards recent players, it's a mix of both men and women, as well as current players and all-time greats.

Data is from the ATP and WTA tours. Doubles and and mixed-doubles earnings are included in the career winnings, but are not included in the number of titles won.

HOUSTON (AP) — Photos taken just a week apart show how the Houston area is starting to recover after the devastation of Harvey's catastrophic floods that left homes and roads under several feet of water.

Harvey slammed into the Gulf Coast of Texas Aug. 25 as a Category 4 hurricane. It soon downgraded to a tropical storm but lingered for days, dropping record amounts of rain on Houston and the surrounding area.

Here's what some areas look like where the floodwaters have receded:

Roads in Houston that a week ago were swamped with waist-deep water packed with boats ferrying drenched and terrified residents to safety are now dry and busy with regular traffic — cars and trucks.

Debris from a flood-ruined house in Spring was on Tuesday piled up in the now-dry front yard. On Aug. 28, the same property was submerged under floodwaters that nearly reached the top of the front door.

Cars drove down roads on Tuesday that Harvey had turned into rivers, filled during the storm with evacuees seeking higher ground.

'Destiny 2' is an absurdly attractive new game — see for yourself

There's a lot to say about the long-awaited "Destiny 2," which launches on Wednesday on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

But first, before we say anything else, let's just marvel at how pretty it is.

Destiny 2

Since I started playing "Destiny 2" on Tuesday, I've been repeatedly struck by how gorgeous it is. Beyond the sweeping vistas that impressed in the first game, there are tons of little details in the world of "Destiny 2" that make it feel alive.

It's got a real sense of style that comes across in everything from quiet moments like the one above to massive firefights with dozens of enemies.

Even the new armor looks fresh, and reflects the state of the in-game world:

Destiny 2

I've been taking screenshots constantly while playing "Destiny 2" on PlayStation 4 — here are some of the coolest things I've seen.

SEE ALSO: After 5 hours with 'Destiny 2,' the most-anticipated game of 2017, I'm anxious to play more

From the first moment of action in "Destiny 2," the game is a looker. It's a gruesome picture in the wake of an alien attack — the impetus for your journey of rebuilding and revenge — but a pretty one nonetheless.

From some of the earliest scenes, "Destiny 2" plays with contrasting colors to highlight important moments. This one, for instance, where you first meet a returning character is particularly impactful.

There's also an excellent use of shadows for dramatic impact. In this scene, you're running past the citizens of The Last City — the city that's currently under attack — and they're huddled together in fear.

These smart clothes are full of pockets so you can leave your bag behind

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Q.U.E.S.T. VestWhether it be a backpack or a messenger, bags are a great way to carry around all the belongings you'll need throughout the day.

But sometimes, carrying a bag can be over-encumbering or an added responsibility you don't need when you just want to be able to move freely.

While stuffing an abundance of things into your pants pockets or simply leaving items behind might seem like the only option, there is a solution — SCOTTeVEST.

Founded in 2000 by Laura and Scott Jordan, SCOTTeVEST became the bridge between apparel designers and consumers' needs for modernized functionality in clothing. The idea came about when Lauren grew tired of carrying around all of Scott's gadgets — portable cameras, chargers, and mp3 players — in her purse. Since carrying a purse of his own, Scott created the "eVEST," a fisherman's vest modified with extra pockets.

Today, SCOTTeVEST has evolved into a full line of smart apparel for men and women with an abundance of thoughtfully placed pockets. Smartphones, cameras, wallets, tablets, and even laptops can be carried inside.

SCOTTeVEST

While Scott's original eVEST lives on through updated options like the Q.U.E.S.T. Vest, you'll also be able to buy hoodies, fleeces, jackets, pants, polos, sport coats, lab coats, hats, and even underwear. Yes, you can now walk around comfortably in just your undies without having to leave your phone and wallet behind.

If you're looking to ditch your bag, SCOTTeVEST has all the pocket you'll ever need.

Shop all apparel at SCOTTeVEST now.

SCOTTeVEST sent over a few pieces for the Insider Picks team to try out. Check out our thoughts and impressions, below:

Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter: SCOTTeVEST Travel Fleece Jacket 8.0

When I first heard about SCOTTeVEST, I thought it was an absolutely brilliant idea. I went with the Travel Fleece 8.0 because fleeces are generally very useful. They're perfect to wear on cool fall days or as an extra layer of warmth during the heart of winter. I also like to keep a fleece for in the office because the AC is sometimes a bit much. After wearing the Fleece 8.0 for about two weeks, I can say that it is by far the most versatile jacket I've ever owned.

My SCOTTeVEST arrived at the perfect time to put it to the test. I was going to a concert that night and didn't want to carry the bag I brought into work. I loaded the fleece with my phone, wallet, keys, a bottle of water, sunglasses, portable battery, and charger. Even though I wasn't at full capacity, I was very impressed with how much I could carry comfortably.

Initially, I was concerned about how it would look when loaded up with stuff, but I found it to look just fine. The jacket itself is actually very stylish. The silver zipper and reflective 3M accents that run along the two front chest pockets and across the back make the jacket stand out, literally. And, if it's too hot for a full jacket, you can remove the sleeves and continue to utilize all the pockets.

Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks Guides Editor: SCOTTeVEST Chloe Hoodie

I've been wanting to try out a SCOTTeVEST hoodie for years. In my former life as a tech journalist, I used to carry multiple phones, wearables, and other devices on me regularly, and there were many times during camera shootouts that I wished for extra pockets. The Chloe Hoodie has pockets to spare — 14, to be exact. I can fit multiple phones, a tablet, camera, sunglasses, keys, pens, and my wallet in the hoodie's pockets without any trouble. The key leash holds my keys securely, and there are even special holders for headphone wires, so you don't get tangled up. It's also very warm and cozy, so I imagine it'll be my travel companion during the winter months. The purple color looks deep and rich, and the fluffy cuffs and hood lining give extra warmth where you need it most. I really wish I'd bought one of these years ago.

Brandt Ranj, Insider Picks Associate Editor: SCOTTeVEST Q.U.E.S.T. Vest

I’d heard of SCOTTeVEST Ultimate Pocket Vest for years, but after trying one, I can say it’s something you have to see (and wear) to fully appreciate. The idea is simple enough: Wear a vest that has a lot of pockets so you don’t have to carry a bag, but the execution is pretty wild.

The pockets, all 42 of them, are meant for gadgets of various sizes, from a small cable to a full-sized iPad. To fully take advantage of the vest, you’d need to carry thousands of dollars worth of tech on you, but it works just as well if you’re carrying a phone, external battery pack, bottle of water, a couple of sets of keys, and a sandwich. There’s no dedicated sandwich pocket, but with the space you’re allotted, there’s certainly room for one.

It’s easy to imagine such a useful piece of apparel being way more functional that fashion-forward, but the Ultimate Pocket Vest manages to look and feel nice, too. Nobody will think twice about whether you’re carrying around a couple of iPads and enough charging cables for all of your family and friends. Taking full advantage of this vest would be a challenge, but even if you use 20% of the pockets, it’ll end up being well worth the investment.

aladdin jasmine

Disney announced Wednesday morning the cast for its live-action "Aladdin" is all set. The Mouse House previously confirmed a few cast members back in July, but we now know everyone who will play Princess Jasmine, her father, and even the sorcerer Jafar.

There's nothing in the announcement about Jafar's parrot sidekick Iago or Aladdin's pal Abu, but the movie will introduce a few new faces to the story. One in particular has started a bit of controversy.

The Oscar-winning 1992 animated movie follows the story of Aladdin, a penniless teen living on the streets who falls for the princess of Agrabah. His luck changes when he finds a magic lamp.

Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes") will direct the new live-action adaptation while the original movie's composer Alan Menken will return for the score with new recordings of original songs along with two new ones.

"Aladdin" has no release date yet. For now, keep reading to see everyone who will star in the live-action adaptation.

Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud will star as the street rat Aladdin who falls for Princess Jasmine.

"Power Rangers" actress Naomi Scott will star as Princess Jasmine who is tired of living behind the palace walls.

"Homeland" actor Navid Negahban will play Jasmine's father, the Sultan, who is eager to find a husband for his daughter.

Negahban has also appeared in "American Sniper" and "Brothers."

Both lists tracked views across the site "between Memorial Day 2017 and Labor Day 2017," according to YouTube.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" topped both charts, continuing its domination of all prominent, data-driven summer music lists.

American college students are giving their dorm rooms insane makeovers — check out the best ones we've seen

$

Every year, incoming college students create magic by transforming bland cement rooms into glamorous pads. This year is no different.

Extreme dorm designs became a trend when Ole Miss freshmen Abby Bozeman and Lindy Goodson transformed their first-year dorm into a charming home-away-from-home.

"We wanted our room to be cozy and comforting while we were away from home," Goodson said of their dorm room. The two added their own personal touches with paintings and pictures and coordinated over the summer with fabric samples. The roommates also DIY-ed things they had from home to keep on budget.

But the Ole Miss freshman aren't the only ones taking on re-designing their dorms. Take a look at a few submissions we've had in our 2017 #BIDormDesigners contest so far:

Steve Cohen's giant penthouse is now on sale for $57.5 million, half of its original price

Once again, billionaire hedge funder Steven A. Cohen is seeking a buyer for his Manhattan duplex penthouse.

The mansion in the sky is now up for grabs for $57.5 million — down $10 million from its last listing price at the end of 2016. He first put it on the market in 2013, when it was offered for $115 million. He later listed it for $98 million, then again for $82 million, then for $79 million, and then for $72 million.

Cohen, who runs Point72 Asset Management — formerly SAC Capital — picked up the apartment for $24 million in 2005. He hired the late architect Charles Gwathmey to redesign the 9,000-square-foot space, which has five bedrooms and six baths. Cohen is an avid art collector, and the home has a dedicated gallery to put his pieces on display.

Located at One Beacon Court — part of the Bloomberg Tower complex — it's in a prime location on the southeast corner of Central Park.

The penthouse has been listed with several different agents over the years, but is now being handled by Tal and Oren Alexander of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Raisa Bruner contributed reporting to an earlier version of this article.

If you didn't already know that Gary Friedman serves as CEO of Restoration Hardware, a walk into his recently sold Napa Valley home would give it away.

Friedman bought the home for $5.9 million in 2013. Clad in neutral colors with precise lines and visual geometry, the house is no cookie-cutter renovation. According to Curbed SF, the house has just sold for $7.55 million — significantly less than the $10.5 million Friedman had asked for it when he originally listed the house in August 2016.

The massive mansion, known as Eight Palms, was fully renovated by the Restoration Hardware design team. The result is what looks like a living, breathing RH catalog.

Ginger Martin of Sotheby's International Realty had the listing.

Brittany Kriegstein contributed reporting to a previous version of this article.

The mansion is situated on a property in St. Helena, in California's famous Napa Valley. Natural elements are showcased throughout the grounds, taking advantage of the environment.

These eight-foot black gates are complete with brass hardware, and they make for a dramatic entrance to the estate.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Friedman paid $5.9 million for the house in 2013. He initially planned on turning it into a private getaway for himself, but then decided to remodel and resell it. The whole process took two years to complete, and the results — like this entry courtyard —speak for themselves.

Why you should know about them:

They're not just about cables anymore! For the past few years, Monoprice has started to enter different industries, but their mantra has stayed the same: cut out the middle step between the product and customer, and save the customer money. Their emphasis is placed on value, so in many cases, you'll be getting a Monoprice product that's comparable to a name-brand one, but without any extra bells and whistles.

8 foods you should try when visiting Universal Orlando

Universal Studios

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Universal Orlando offers some great food, drinks, and desserts.
  • Fans of "The Simpsons" can get their hands on a giant pink doughnut and a glass of Duff Beer.
  • Harry Potter fans must have a glass of Butterbeer and some Butterbeer-flavored ice cream.

You're an adult. You get up for work every morning, endure long hours and long weeks, and then you do it all over again. But sometimes you feel like spending a few days in one of America's favorite theme parks, stuffing your face with chocolate and riding the "Jurassic Park"- and Harry Potter-themed attractions until you're sick to your stomach. Guess what? You deserve it.

On one such lucky diversion, I had the pleasure of eating and drinking just about everything Universal Studios Orlando has to offer. (And, no, I’m not talking your basic chicken fingers and fries here.) From the quick bites you can grab in the parks to the quieter sit-down dinners in surrounding CityWalk, Universal is pumping out some very good eats. Many of them also happen to bring to life iconic films and TV shows, and that's certainly fine by me.

As a guide for your next visit, here's everything you need to devour at Universal Studios Orlando. Just remember to give yourself a short break before hitting the Incredible Hulk Coaster.

1. Giant Pink Doughnuts from Lard Lad

You've gotta start here. Located in the "Simpsons"-themed Springfield portion of the parks, these sweet, dense and absolutely massive pink-frosted doughnuts are the best way to get a sugar high. Universal sells a remarkable 50 dozen of them every day.

2. Butterbeer Ice Cream

About that sugar high: Keep it going with the most magical treat in all the land. Creamy soft-serve ice cream, plus ribbons of golden butterbeer? Yes, please.

3. Oversize Turkey Legs from Thunder Falls Terrace

Because you need to walk around Jurassic Park posing with animatronic dinosaurs and displaying your ridiculously large serving of meat. You just need to.

The 10 strongest hurricanes ever to hit the Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Irma is slamming the Caribbean as a category 5 storm

Irma's recorded maximum wind speed hit 185 mph on Wednesday, with some gusts of wind moving as fast as 215 mph.

That makes the storm one of the most powerful ever to hit the Atlantic basin.

The categories on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale are determined based on wind speed, but that's not the only element of a hurricane that causes damage. Flooding, a metric that the categories don't take into account, can often become a costly problem, as was recently seen when Hurricane Harvey flooded parts of Texas and Louisiana.

To put this year's storms into perspective, here are 10 hurricanes that topped the charts as the strongest in the history of the Atlantic Ocean, based on wind speed and pressure.

Hurricane Andrew, 1992 - 175 mph

About 25 years ago, the Category 5 Hurricane Andrew ripped through Florida with 175-mph winds, leaving millions without power and many neighborhoods completely destroyed. The response was so problematic that it led to major changes within the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to USA Today

Hurricane Camille, 1969 - 175 mph

Hurricane Camille formed in the Gulf of Mexico and hit Mississippi as a Category 5 storm. Camille caused more than 256 deaths and is considered one of the most intense hurricane to hit the US based on its pressure, which was measured at 900 millibars. (The more intense a hurricane is, the lower its pressure.)

  • Ray Dalio runs Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund, according to the principles of "radical truth" and "radical transparency."
  • Employees rate each other across over 100 attributes on a 1-10 scale in an iPad app called "Dots."
  • Dalio demoed the app to the TED 2017 audience in April, now publicly available to watch.

At Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund, all 1,500 employees are constantly rating each other across more than 100 attributes on a 1-10 scale.

In a newly released presentation from the TED 2017 conference in April, Bridgewater founder, chairman, and co-CIO Ray Dalio explained to the audience how this approach fit into his life philosophy.

"My objective has been to have meaningful work and meaningful relationships with the people I work with, and I've learned that I couldn't have that unless I had that radical transparency and that algorithmic decision-making," he said. "I want to show you why that is. I want to show you how it works."

Dalio founded Bridgewater in 1975 out of his apartment, and today the Westport, Connecticut-based firm has $103 billion in hedge fund assets and $150 billion in total assets under management. Dalio attributes his firm's success to the investing principles he began developing in the '80s and the management principles he began developing in the '90s.

"Dots" is a proprietary iPad app that is a crucial element of radical transparency at Bridgewater, and Dalio gave a demo to the TED audience.

"I warn you that some of the things that I'm going to show you probably are a little bit shocking," he said.

Dalio pulled up footage of a research team meeting held a week after Donald Trump's presidential victory, where they forecasted economic results of his upcoming presidency.

The footage was available because nearly every meeting is recorded at Bridgewater, primarily so that they may be cited in company-wide emails or weekly teaching assignments.

All employees at the meeting had Dots running on their iPads. There are more than 100 total attributes to choose from, and measure aspects like values and thinking.

Dalio highlighted one of the employees at the meeting, 24-year-old Jen. She felt that Dalio did not hold up to his own standards in the meeting.

Dalio has long said that one of his favorite aspects of his culture is that employees fresh out of college can give him, the founder of the company, harsh critiques without fear of retribution. In fact, they're encouraged to do so, if the situation calls for it.

Regardless of being told over and over again that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, many of us make a habit of skipping it.

Why? because we (right or wrong) believe it takes too long. In a 2015 study, Mintel surveyed Millennials to figure out why they weren't eating cereal anymore, since it's one of the all-time simplest breakfast choices. The answer — for a whopping 40% — was that it meant clean up time

We’d all like the kind of massive breakfasts families in movies set in the 1950s eat off checkered tablecloths, but no one wants to get up 45 minutes early to make them.

Instead, we all rush out the door in the morning and sit at our desks hungry and potentially more irritable than normal by 11 a.m.

When you’re thinking about lunch for an hour before you leave to eat it (and the hour in which you actually are eating it), you’re not as productive at work as you could be, and that can mean staying at the office later that night than you might have needed to.

You’re likely not going to get any less busy (or wake up tomorrow wanting to spend those 45 minutes cooking), so we rounded up some easy — and pretty inexpensive — options for a breakfast that’ll fill you up but won’t take more than a few minutes to make. Check them out below:

A smoothie maker with a take-away bottle

Smoothies can be one of the healthiest and most satisfying early morning meals, and an easy way to get an early serving of veggies and fruits in, too. Plus, they're relatively inexpensive and can keep you full until it's time for lunch, depending on what ingredients you use.

If you want the most convenient and quick process possible, grab one of these best-selling take-away bottle blender. It'll help you portion out the right amount for a single smoothie (since leftover smoothie sounds way better than it tastes) and make cleanup time as easy as possible. Throw in the ingredients the night before, store it in the fridge, add milk/water in the morning and throw it on the blender before heading out the door.

Epica Personal Blender with Take-Along Bottle, $24.95

Frozen fruit packs for an inexpensive and easy fresh smoothie

A cheap (and fast) way to make smoothies is to grab a bunch of frozen fruit, which is affordable and keeps the nutrients in your fruit intact until you're ready to thaw and eat, so you don't have to work off the timetable of how long your new strawberries will last on their own.

Birds Eye, Ultimate Berry Medley, 12 Oz, $2.77

A microwavable omelet pan

Mix up your favorite mix of ingredients and eggs in the morning (or the night before) and pop it in here for an omelet within minutes. Then, before you head out the door, just throw it in the dishwasher so you can use it again when the craving hits.

Nordic Ware Microwave Omelet Pan, $6.17

Superheroes are taking over the small screen.

From new shows like Fox's "The Gifted," which centers on a family with two mutant kids, and old favorites like The CW's "The Flash," which follows the fastest man alive, Marvel and DC shows can be found on multiple channels.

There are going to be more than 20 shows based on Marvel or DC comics onscreen and on streaming services through the end of 2017 and 2018. This list excludes the numerous animated shows available, except for one that fits into the live-action "Arrowverse" and an upcoming "Deadpool" comedy.

Additionally, DC is planning to launch a digital streaming service in 2018, but we've kept their planned shows off this list until we know more.

Here are all of the superhero shows on TV over the next year:

What it's about: The show features Jim Gordan before he is commissioner, Bruce Wayne isn't Batman yet, and the regular Batman villains aren't at their full potential yet. As the show comes back for a fourth season, young Bruce is beginning to venture in vigilantism.

Starring: Anson Mount, Iwan Rheon, Serinda Swan, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ken Leung, Ellen Woglom, Sonya Balmores, and Mike Moh

11 things you should never make in a slow cooker

Chicken in slow cooker

With the temperatures dropping outside, sometimes nothing hits the spot like a nice warm meal.

While some meals are perfect to make in a slow cooker, you should stick to making certain meals in an oven or stove top.

Here are 11 things you should never make in a slow cooker.

Pasta

Noodles continue to absorb liquid as the dish sits, so making pasta in a slow cooker will result in mushy noodles.

Fresh herbs

When cooked for a long time, herbs become wilted, brown, and flavorless. It's best to add fresh herbs to your dish at the very end.

Chicken skin

Unlike baked chicken skin, which is crisp and flavorful, chicken skin gets rubbery and gelatinous in a slow cooker. Yuck.

Make sure to remove the skin before adding your chicken into the crock pot if that's not the effect you want.
