We tried the country's first 100% vegetarian drive-thru to see if it's better than the Chick-fil-A across the street — here's the verdict

chick-fil-a versus amy's drive thru

There's no rule that says fast food has to make you feel terrible.

In recent years, American consumers have shown a craving for healthier fast food. Restaurant chains that offer low-calorie meals — that remain convenient and affordable — have sprouted across the US, forcing legacy brands like Taco Bell and McDonald's to rethink their menus.

The fast-food revolution is no more apparent than in Rohnert Park, California, where a Chick-fil-A sits across the street from up-and-coming vegetarian fast-food chainAmy's Drive Thru. On a visit to both restaurants, we found Amy's buzzing with diners long after the lunch hour.

We tried sandwiches from both Amy's and Chick-fil-A. Here's what we liked better.

SEE ALSO: We tried the high-fat, buttered coffee drink that's taken Silicon Valley by storm — here's the verdict

On a recent visit to California's wine country, I stopped in Rohnert Park for a bite to eat.

There was no shortage of options. A highway exit off Redwood Drive offers access to Arby's, Taco Bell, Burger King, Amy's Drive Thru, Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out Burger, and El Pollo Loco.

I decided to eat at Chick-fil-A before visiting Amy's. They're located across the street from each other, and they both make sandwiches the star of the menu.

Plus, Chick-fil-A generates more revenue per restaurant than any other fast-food chain in the US — a testament to the fried-chicken chain's loyal fan base — according to QSR magazine.

Within the last few years, Chick-fil-A has remodeled hundreds of stores to give them a modern farmhouse feel. The Rohnert Park location showcased that new image.

Nintendo is about to release a miniature version of the original SNES — here's everything we know about it

Super NES Classic Edition

That smell of teen spirit and Nickelodeon slime isn't just you — the '90s are cool again. Look no further than the adorably angular Super Nintendo console above for confirmation of that fact.

Nintendo isn't going so far as straight-up rereleasing the original SNES console, but it has instead created a new device called the Super NES Classic Edition. We're just a few weeks away from the console's release, so we compiled everything we know about it in our Trapper Keeper — then published our findings below.

SEE ALSO: You can finally buy Nintendo's new $80 mini Super Nintendo later this month

DON'T MISS: It looks as if Nintendo's making a miniature, inexpensive version of the original Nintendo 64 console

As hinted above, the Super NES Classic Edition is smaller than the original Super Nintendo. Here's the original SNES — the console is much larger than the gamepad.

By contrast, the Super NES Classic Edition is minuscule. The gamepad is far larger than the console, which is adorable and hilarious. The console fits in the palm of your hand.

Don't be fooled by the look of it, though. The SNES Classic Edition doesn't function anything like the original SNES. You can't put cartridges in it, nor can you plug original gamepads into the ports on the front.

Controllers plugged into the front ports of the original Super Nintendo console, and game cartridges went into the slot on top. The blue sliders controlled power and resetting the console, and the gray lever in the middle ejected games. It now seems pretty low-tech.

The Golden State Warriors are the latest NBA team to announce the addition of an ad patch to their jersey for the upcoming season.

Japanese tech holding company Rakuten has purchased the ad space on the front of the Warriors' jerseys with a three-year, $60 million deal, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN

Here is a look at the patch. The Rakuten logo will be white on the Warriors' blue jerseys (you can see the other NBA teams with ad patches below).

According to the report, the Warriors rejected at least one larger offer.

"We actually had multiple finalists," Warriors chief marketing officer Chip Bowers told ESPN. "This was not the biggest deal that we were offered."

The team will also rename its practice facility to "The Rakuten Performance Center."

So far, 14 NBA teams have announced the addition of ad patches and more may come as we get closer to the season.

Some teams have opted for team-color-friendly patches. Some teams have formed true two-way partnerships with their ad patches promoting a business that the team also works with off the court. And one team has even chosen to promote a charity with their ad patch.

Below is a look at the partnerships that have been announced so far.

The best sleeping bags you can buy

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

sleeping bag 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • A sleeping bag is more than a matter of comfort. In extreme circumstances, having the right sleeping can be a matter of life and death. But that's no reason not to find one that's nice and cozy, too. The Hyke & Byke Quandary 15 Degree sleeping bag is warm and comfortable, lightweight and compactable, and it won't break the bank.

I've spent some pretty cold nights in some pretty harsh places over the past decade. I rode out a windstorm on the Ingraham Flats glacier of Mt. Rainier back in 2012. I've set up camp at the fittingly named Trail Camp on Mt. Whitney four times. It's also known as High Camp because the elevation there is just above 12,000 feet. Yeah, it gets chilly. I've slept in leaky huts high up in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range of Colombia during biblical downpours.

And so forth, the point here isn't to rattle off the names of various mountains — as much fun as that can be — the point is I know what makes the difference between a terrible backcountry night and a passable evening during which you actually get some shuteye. It's the sleeping bag. You probably guessed that already, being as you're here to read about sleeping bags.

As with many elements of gear intended for use far afield, choosing the best sleeping bag means weighing various needs and selecting an option that comes closest to meeting as many of them as possible. You're not going to find one sleeping bag that suits all climates, activities, and users.

The warmest bags out there are also the heaviest. You have to keep warm when camped out at night, but if you're trekking dozens of miles each day, that huge heavy sleeping bag might not be worth the extra pounds. If you're car camping or pitching your tent after a short stroll into the woods, that slender, form-fitting mummy bag that only weighs a couple of pounds thanks to its advanced synthetic fill might be overkill. Why not spread out in a big, comfortable bag and rest easy if pack weight is no issue?

When choosing the best sleeping bag, there are a few basic considerations you have to make, including your size relative to a given option, the temperature rating of the bag, the likely temperatures of the places in which you'll use it, and your personal requirements for comfort. Some people hate hooded bags, for example, while some people just love drawing the draft collar tight around their heads and trapping all that warm air inside. Me? I like the option of the collar, but you'll rarely find my head tucked into the hood unless it's truly freezing inside that tent.

In assembling this guide, I looked for bags that will suit a range of activities. You could read for hours on end about ultra-light sleeping bags ideal for glacial trekking or about double bags great for couples. But you probably don't have hours to devote to that, thus this more inclusive survey of five great sleeping bag options.

Although the Hyke & Byke Quandary 15 Degree is our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Bonfire, the Coleman North Rim Extreme Weather, the Teton Sports Fahrenheit, and the Sleepingo Double Sleeping Bag.

The best sleeping bag overall

Why you'll love it: When you find yourself miles from the comforts of civilization with a rainstorm or snowfall setting in around your tent, you'll be glad you have the warm, water-repellent, and durably-made Hyke & Byke Quandary sleeping bag to crawl into.

The Hyke & Byke Quandary 15 degree sleeping bag is all about warmth. Its durable shell is made from 400T 20 D ripstop nylon fabric that resists punctures and tears and helps to keep its all-natural duck down filling in place and evenly distributed all around your body. The bag features baffles around the zipper that prevent heat loss and it has both hood and shoulder drawstrings, so you can trap in warmth with or without encasing your head in the fabric. The bag is water-repellent, which further helps with warmth and comfort, and it's even available in multiple colors, not that gear color really matters much.

Now keep all that good stuff in mind when you hear these next points: The Quandary weighs only three pounds and costs only $130. The long version weighs 3.32 pounds, which is still impressive! This sleeping bag offers the same warmth rating as many bags that weigh nearly twice as much, and yet it also costs much less than many comparable choices. This is partly true because Hyke & Byke is trying to aggressively position its products since it's new on the scene.

Out of hundreds of reviews left for the Quandary sleeping bag on Amazon, more than 80% of them come with five-star reviews, with another 10% featuring four-star ratings. One reviewer mentioned having to shed her extra layers because it was so warm in the bag, while another joked that: "The only issue I had with the sleeping bag was that I actually had to get out and pack it up in the morning, when I would have liked to just stay in it all day!"

A MorningChores.com review of the Hyke & Byke Quandary gave it an A+ rating and singled out the bag's water-repellent fabric and how well it packs down. A BestSeekers.com write-up mentions its excellent heat retention qualities, a must for safety and comfort.

Pros: Lightweight option, packs down well, good for backpacking, great low price point

Cons: Too narrow for larger users and/or wide shoulders; zipper snags easily

Buy the Hyke & Byke Quandary 15 Degree Sleeping Bag on Amazon for $129.99 (originally $249.99)

The best sleeping bag for extreme cold

Why you'll love it: The Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Bonfire is rated at -30 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you need to keep warm when it's super cold, this is the bag to choose.

I've spent a good amount of time tucked into a Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Bonfire sleeping bag, and the very first time I crawled inside one, I was simply testing it out on the hardwood floor of my living room. What struck me at once was how comfortable I felt even on the wooden floor. This bag is so thick and padded that you could almost skip the sleeping pad and still be comfortable on most surfaces. Its soft polyester lining is comfortable and moisture-wicking, and its exterior is made from a resilient nylon. The "Thermal Q" filling retains its insulating properties even if it gets damp.

As for warmth, I have yet to spend a night in a climate too cold for this bag to keep me more than warm enough for comfort. In fact, you will usually have to allow some cool air in to bring the interior temperature down to a comfortable level.

That warmth does come with its drawbacks, of course: The Lamina Z Bonfire weighs more than five pounds and, even after your best efforts at compression, it will still occupy a bit more pack space than a basketball (about 15 liters of space). The weight and size of this bag almost make it unsuitable for use during climbing expeditions or on long treks unless you will genuinely be facing temperatures well below freezing.

Being rather expensive, the Lamina Z Bonfire is not a top seller on Amazon, though all of the reviews you will find there are glowing. One buyer states using the bag is "like sleeping in a sauna," while another celebrates the comfort it offers even to a man standing more than 6'4".

A review from the blog of trusted outdoor gear retailer REI didn't hold back with praise for the Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Bonfire, celebrating its heat retention and lack of cold spots, though their testers did point out the bulky size of the bag even when it is compressed for packing.

Pros: Fabulously warm sleeping bag; comfortable padding; water-resistant shell

Cons: Heavy and bulky, not ideal for distance backpacking or for climbing expeditions

Buy the Mountain Hardware Lamina Z Bonfire Sleeping Bag on Amazon for $237 and up (prices vary by size)

The best sleeping bag on a budget

Why you'll love it: The Coleman North Rim Extreme Weather sleeping bag costs a quarter the price of many options that boast similar statistics of warmth and weight.

For a change, let's start out with a few of the negative points because they will actually make the highlights of this sleeping bag stand out even more. The Coleman North Rim Extreme Weather bag is rather heavy, at over four pounds, and it doesn't compress that well. Even packed down tight, it takes up a lot of space in your backpack, and that's despite the fact that it probably won't be comfortable for an adult male much taller than 6'2".

Beyond that, this is a superlative sleeping bag. It has a tough ripstop polyester exterior and a soft, comfortable interior lining that just so happens to also be made of polyester. Thanks to the fact that the fill is also made from — you guessed it! — polyester you can machine-wash this bag without it losing its insulation quality. You can even tumble it dry on low. The North Rim Extreme should keep you warm even at temperatures well below the freezing point. It's rated as a zero-to-ten-degree Fahrenheit bag, and details like a full-length draft tube placed behind the zipper and a drawstring hood help keep the heat inside the bag where you need it.

But that price is the crown jewel here. This sleeping bag costs only a bit more than forty bucks. For the warmth and quality, you can't beat that price.

And hundreds of customers know it. While only 64% of current Amazon reviews are five-star, there are enough positive vibes out there for this bag to rate at 4.4-stars overall. One buyer remarked on becoming too warm in the zipped-shut bag despite snow actively falling outside his tent, while another summed it up with the words: "Overall, for the price, I think this sleeping bag is hard to beat."

As for what the pros have to say, a Camping Quartermaster review praised the rugged stitching and, of course, the low price, but did bemoan the bags weight and bulkiness when packed down. A reviewer with All Around Camping noted the draft-blocking curtain around the head and shoulder areas of the bag, but advised bigger, taller folks to look elsewhere.

Pros: Great low price tag, warm and cozy, easy to adjust ventilation properties

Cons: Heavy, bulky even when compressed, too small for taller, larger users

Buy the Coleman North Rim Extreme Weather Sleeping Bag on Amazon for $48.59 (originally $66.99)

The 15 most incredible plutonium-powered space missions of all time

plutonium 238 nasa department energy pu-238 pu238

NASA is just days away from plunging its $3.26-billion Cassini mission into the clouds of Saturn. It will glow like a meteor for a minute or two, then never be seen again.

The mission has lasted two decades and explored the Saturn system for 13 years. But unlike the vast majority of spacecraft, Cassini hasn't relied on solar energy; sunlight is just 1% as strong at Saturn as it is at Earth. Powering a robot like Cassini with sunshine there would require solar panels the size of football fields.

What made Cassini possible is one of the rarest materials in the universe: plutonium-238.

Pu-238 is a byproduct of nuclear weapons production. But it's not a key ingredient in atomic bombs (unlike plutonium-239 and other fissile isotopes), and half of any amount decays within about 87 years. On a spacecraft, this decay gives off lasting warmth that helps safeguard fragile electronics. It also reduces the weight of a robot, allowing for heavier shielding where radiation fields are dangerous to electronics.

But most importantly, wrapping Pu-238 with heat-to-electricity converting materials, called thermoelectrics, forms a nuclear battery that lasts for decades.

plutonium 238 isotope robotic arm oak ridge national laboratory ornl

On September 15, NASA will plunge its Cassini spacecraft into the clouds of Saturn on one final mission — and with it will vanish its 72 lbs of Pu-238.

The space agency has only 37 lbs of Pu-238 left that's ready to put inside a spacecraft. That's enough to launch another two or three plutonium-powered spacecraft.

NASA and the US Energy Department are working hard to resurrect Pu-238 production capabilities, and they've shown recent progress, but the program is years behind schedule — and the material is our best and perhaps only way to explore most of deep space.

As NASA says goodbye to some of its longest-lived probes and sets its sights on future nuclear spacecraft, we review the 15 greatest plutonium-238-powered US space programs of the past and present.

DON'T MISS: A forgotten war technology could safely power Earth for millions of years. Here's why we aren't using it

Transit satellite network

Physicist Glenn Seaborg discovered plutonium in 1940 and, just 20 years later, engineers used it to build nuclear batteries for spacecraft.

In 1960 the US Navy took over an experimental plutonium-powered satellite program called TRANSIT to guide their submarines and missiles from space.

The first satellite powered by plutonium, called Transit 4A (above), reached orbit on June 29, 1961.

Width: 800px
Height: 450px

By 1988, dozens of similar spacecraft — four of them using nuclear batteries — made up a rudimentary satellite navigation network.

Each satellite beamed a unique radio signal. With multiple signals coming from different orbits, the Navy could easily track its submarines and other wartime hardware.

But space scientists hit a snag early on: Their data suggested that spacecraft slowed down or sped up over certain parts of Earth.

When researchers mapped the anomalies, they realized that some regions of the planet were far denser than they thought, and that the extra mass — and gravity — subtly affected spacecraft speed.

The map of the anomalies (above) became the first of Earth’s geoid, a representation of the planet’s true gravitational shape.

The best routers you can buy for fast Wi-Fi at home

$
0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

router 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • A great router is essential to ensure that you have speedy Wi-Fi at home. The best router you can buy is Google WiFi because it is not only capable of providing a good internet connection in large homes, but it doesn't cost too much, either.

Having a good router at home is becoming increasingly important. It's not just about connecting your phone and your computer to Wi-Fi anymore. Nowadays, you need a good router to maximize your internet speeds and connect all your smart home devices and other connected things. But not all Wi-Fi routers are good. In fact, plenty of them won't give you fast internet or a stable connection.

There are a few things to consider when you’re buying a Wi-Fi router. For starters, you’ll want to think about the standards that the router is capable of handling. Most new routers use the 802.11ac standard, which is capable of faster wireless speeds than other routers. If your ISP offers speeds of 100Mbps or more, routers with the 802.11am standard will be able to handle it.

Another thing to consider is whether your router is single band or dual band. The two bands are 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and 5GHz connections are typically faster and more reliable. Some routers offer both bands separately or both bands combined. Dual-band routers are also typically better in high-density areas.

You’ll also want to think about the range of a router, especially if you live in a larger home. Often, you’ll experience dead spots in your home with some routers, but those can be eliminated through the use of a router with a big range, or by using a mesh system, which basically connects multiple routers together to extend the range of Wi-Fi in your house.

Although Google WiFi is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Linksys EA7500 router, the TP-Link Archer C50 router, the Netgear Nighthawk X4S router, the Netgear Orbi router, and the Samsung Connect Home router.

SEE ALSO: The best smart home hubs you can buy

The best router overall

Why you'll love it: Google WiFi isn’t just well-designed and easy to use, it also allows you to check internet speeds and extend your Wi-Fi signal to cover your entire home.

The Wi-Fi router has largely stayed the same over the past few years, but some companies are finally trying to push the router into this decade. One of those companies is Google, which recently launched its Google WiFi system.

One of the cool things about Google WiFi is that it’s aimed at extending the range of your Wi-Fi network. How? By creating what’s called a mesh network. That basically involves a main router that communicates with other routers you can place around the home to extend your Wi-Fi range and eliminate dead spots.

That’s not the only thing that makes Google WiFi a hit. Another great feature allows you to monitor your Wi-Fi use through the Google Wi-Fi app. Not only can you see how much data you’ve used and how fast your internet speed is, but you can also see a visualization of your entire home, prioritize some areas over others, and more. It’s really a pretty smart system.

You can buy just one Google WiFi for $129 if you have a smaller home or apartment that's around 1,200 square feet or less. If you have a large home, you'll want the three-pack Google WiFi for $269.

We’re not the only ones that love Google WiFi and how smart it is. You can read our full review on Business InsiderCNET gave it 4/5 stars, while Digital Trends gave it a more conservative, but still very respectable, 7/10.

Pros: Easy to use, great speeds, inexpensive

Cons: Some mesh systems have more features

Buy one Google WiFi from Bed Bath & Beyond for $129

Buy the 3-pack Google WiFi on Amazon for $269 (originally $299)

The best router for large homes

Why you'll love it: The Linksys EA7500 AC1900 is built for performance with super fast speeds and beamforming technology to widen your Wi-Fi range.

The Linksys EA7500 is a dual-band router that’s able to provide up to 1.9Gbps, but beyond that, it’s known for being able to handle multiple users and devices without too much signal degradation.

One of the best things about the router is that it uses beamforming technology to concentrate its signal towards the connected devices, rather than simply sending out a blanket signal. That helps keep upload and download speeds as fast as possible.

Beyond that, the router has a quick and easy setup procedure that reportedly takes under 20 minutes. After that setup, you’ll be able to create a free Smart WiFi account so you can manage certain aspects of the router through a mobile app. It also has as many as four Ethernet ports and two USB ports.

The Linksys EA7500 has largely been well received, too. Not only does it sit in with a 4.4-star average on Amazon, but Trusted Reviews and PCMag also gave it 4/5 stars.

Pros: Fast speeds, great range, decent port selection

Cons: A little expensive

Buy the Linksys EA7500 AC1900 on Amazon for $157.99

The best router less than $50

Why you'll love it: The TP-Link Archer C50 AC1200 is well-designed, easy to set up, and costs less than $50.

Looking for a great router but don’t want to spend too much money? That’s where the TP-Link Archer C50 AC1200 comes in.

The first thing you’ll notice about the TP-Link Archer C50 is its design, and it’s not a bad-looking device. It may not be as classy as Google WiFi, but it should still fit pretty well with your home décor. The router itself is dual-band, so it’ll deliver a little more bandwidth and speed than its single-band counterparts. On top of that, it’s easy to set up and offers a pretty decent range compared to other, similarly-priced routers.

When it comes to ports, the device has four Ethernet ports, as well as two USB ports, and while more USB ports would have been nice, the included ports should still offer plenty for most users.

There are a few downsides to consider here. Unlike other routers on the list, this router doesn’t have a built-in modem, so you’ll still have to buy a modem to access the internet. Still, despite the downsides, the router sits in with a nice 3.9 stars on Amazon.

Pros: Dual-band, good speeds, easy to use, reliable

Cons: Router only (no modem)

Buy the TP-Link Archer C50 on Amazon for $39.98

scaramucci sunglasses

Aside from sporting a pair of eclipse glasses (and taking them off to stare directly at the sun), President Donald Trump doesn't wear sunglasses.

He's ferried between the White House, his various private resorts, official duties, Air Force One, and the presidential limousine sans eyewear.

Yet many of his staff members and family frequently wear sunglasses of varying fashion levels and designs.

Here's a roundup of the many sunglasses of the Trump administration:

The only instance we could find of Trump wearing sunglasses was in this "Saturday Night Live" promo from November 2015.

The $3 million Bugatti Chiron just set a new speed record

Bugatti Chiron

We all know the Bugatti Chiron is capable of some truly incredible performance. Business Insider recently had the chance to drive to a Chiron and can confirm that a 0-120 mph run for the Bugatti is about as effortless as a jog over to McDonald's for some McNuggets would be for Usain Bolt. Needless to say, there are a few more gears left to explore.

On Monday, Bugatti once again demonstrated the awesome capabilities of its newest car with a record setting run that saw the Chiron accelerate from a standstill to 400 kph (249 mph) and then come to a stop in just 41.96 seconds.

In the process, the Chiron became the fastest production vehicle to ever complete this type of run.

"Bugatti is the first car brand that not only calculates how fast a car can go from zero to 400 to zero on a computer. We actually drove it," Bugatti Automobiles president Wolfgang Dürheimer said in a statement. "Where others are satisfied with theory, we validate our data with real-life values. Just like we did with the Chiron."

Bugatti conducted the test in August with former Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR star Juan Pablo Montoya at the controls of the $3 million, 1,500 horsepower beast. (Our Chiron test car had about $500,000 worth of options which pushed the price up to $3.5 million.)

According to Bugatti, Montoya needed just 32.6 seconds and a little over 1.6 miles to get the Chiron up to 249 mph. Another 9.3 seconds and 1,600 feet later, the Bugatti was back at a standstill. In total, the Chiron's 0-249-0 run required just a tad over 10,000 feet of real estate.

The Bugatti Chiron is powered by an 8.0 liter, 1,500 horsepower quad-turbo W-16 engine hooked up to a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox and all-wheel-drive.

The Chiron has an electronically limited top speed of 261 mph. Bugatti hasn't yet unleashed the car on the outright speed record of 267 mph that's currently held by its predecessor, the Veyron Super Sports. But that will likely change at some point.

According to the company, Bugatti and Montoya wanted to make the record-setting run under real world conditions. Hence the jeans.

LamicallThe world of iPhone accessories is vast, and can range from basic to extravagant.

All of the products on this list cost under $20 and will help keep your iPhone charged and protected, and help keep you entertained.

For many people, myself included, our smartphone is the center of our digital world. Why not make the most of it?

A phone case

One of the biggest reasons people don't put an iPhone case on is because of the added weight and bulk, but with this case, that's not a problem.

Heftier cases will provide more support, but if you're looking for the bare minimum to prevent scratching and some resistance if your phone falls, this is a good option.

Caseology Slim Clear Cushion Grip iPhone 7 Case, $10.99, available at Amazon

Caseology Slim Clear Cushion Grip iPhone 7 Plus Case, $11.99, available at Amazon

A portable battery

I've beaten this drum before, but for good reason. There's no reason not to have an external battery pack anymore; they're inexpensive, can fit easily in a pocket or purse, and will charge your phone in a pinch.

Jackery Pop Slim 5000mAh External Batter Pack, $18.99, available at Amazon

A pair of Bluetooth earbuds

I love a good pair of headphones, but it's easier to wear a pair of earbuds if you're commuting or going on a trip. In this price range you shouldn't go in expecting an audiophile experience, but Monoprice's option seems to satisfy most people's needs.

The one thing to consider is that these earbuds only have a five-hour battery life, which is fine for a commute but not extended travel.

15 things Netflix's 'Stranger Things' took from Stephen King's 'It'

stephen king it stranger things

Even the great Stephen King himself has expressed his utter joy at having found the many links between Stranger Things and his sci-fi masterpieces. Furthermore, the Duffer brothers have not been coy about who and what inspired the show.

Eleven shares many similarities with King’s most famous anti-heroine, Carrie, such as her psychic powers and sinister upbringing, while there are whiffs of Stand By Me, like the scene where they walk along train tracks in search of Will.

As you may know, the Duffer brothers had originally pitched an IT adaptation. They were rejected and thankfully went on to create Stranger Things, which has gained a huge fan base who more than appreciate its retro take on the science fiction genre. With inspiration from the likes of King and Spielberg, you can draw many comparisons between Stranger Things and some of your favourite classics, including IT

In the very first episode, Joyce, played by Winona Ryder, asks Will if he’s scared of clowns and even Eleven’s name could be a reference to a famous quote from IT: “What can be done when you’re eleven can often never be done again.”And in case you were wondering, Finn Wolfhard’s role as Richie Tozier is just a mere coincidence as recently relayed by the director of IT, Andie Muschietti.

Because of our love for all things strange, it is our absolute joy to present you with 15 Things Stranger Things Stole From Stephen King’s IT.

15. The font used for the title of "Stranger Things" replicates pretty much all of King's novels

The fact that Stranger Things adopts the same font as many of Stephen King’sbook covers has cropped up in numerous articles comparing the show to King’s work. Indeed, throughout the entire season, you can find small copycat clues that link to one King novel or another.

With today’s obsession with all that is retro, it’s not hard to see why they chose this font for the title of the show and although this type of lettering is mainly linked to King’s novels, similar fonts can be found on a wide range of vintage horror and sci-fi books. Anyone remember those Point Horror books as a kid? The dark backdrop with the large domineering letters were too enticing not to pick up. As soon as you see those bold big red letters with the bent edges, you know you’re retromania will be put to rest!

14. Both Eleven and Beverly allow the boys to become familiar with girls

Ben from IT and Mike from Stranger Things both take a liking to the ‘new girl’, and we see how they deal with their new feelings of attraction and protectiveness. From the outset it is clear that both groups have little experience with the female gender, but we slowly see them grow in confidence as the girls become a welcome addition.

Both Eleven and Beverly bring a certain level of maturity and common-sense which the boys do not possess. This is most likely down to their experiences, which have made them wary of adults and given them a darker outlook on things. With the new arrivals, we are able to see the boys, Ben and Mike, tackle these foreign emotions. Their love for the young girls mean they both have a lot more to lose, making the danger all the more menacing.

13. Both have one sole female character who joins the group

There are some prominent female characters in both. In IT, it is Beverly Marsh, a girl who is abused by her father, who later becomes a victim of domestic abuse as she struggles to leave the second violent man in her life.

In Stranger Things, Eleven also has a complex relationship with her own “father figure”, Brenner. Eleven calls him ‘Papa’, and it is not yet known if this man is her real dad or not, although it seems unlikely. Brenner is the director of the Hawkins lab in which Eleven was kept prisoner for experimental purposes. Eleven led an isolated life within the lab and is yet to learn about her mother, whom she was taken from as a baby by members of the lab. While Beverly’s relationship with her own family is strained, and Eleven’s non-existent, it is their misfortune that so fervently ties them to their friends.

Hope Hicks is Trump's next communications director: Here's how a 28-year-old with no political experience got into his inner circle

hope hicks

Hope Hicks, 28, is officially President Donald Trump's full-time White House communications director. But before joining Trump's 2016 campaign, she had no political experience.

Hicks was born in Greenwich, a town of 60,000 on the southwest tip of Connecticut that's a favorite spot for hedge-fund headquarters.

She was a model, actress, and lacrosse player as a child, before getting her English degree at Southern Methodist University.

Hicks didn't intend on playing such a large role in a presidential campaign, instead falling into the gig through a job at the Trump Organization.

She now finds herself as one of Trump's youngest advisers, serving as his new communications director after being named "interim" in August.

And Hicks has been with Trump — to use his words — "from the beginning." She stuck on his campaign through several staff revamps, including two high-profile changes at the campaign-chair position.

Here's what we know about Hicks.

Hicks' first brush with the Trumps came in 2012 when she was at the public-relations firm Hiltzik Strategies working on Ivanka Trump's fashion line. Trump's eldest daughter hired Hicks away in 2014 and she became an employee of the Trump Organization.

marrakech moroccoThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Summer may be coming to an end, but that doesn't mean your vacation plans have to.
  • From Marrakech to Crete, these are the ideal destinations to visit if you're longing for summer weather this October.

With October comes pumpkin spice, autumn skies, golden leaves, and excitement for the coming holidays. However, it also brings with it chilly weather and even snow in some parts of the world, which doesn’t always make for ideal vacations. Granted, there are plenty of tropical destinations that are hot year-round such as the Caribbean and places like
Indonesia and Thailand. But even outside of these literal hot spots, there are many places in the Northern Hemisphere where temperatures are pretty high in October, providing a wonderful, hot vacation. So check out our list of vacation destinations where you can still enjoy summer-like climates in the fall — and be sure to pack the sunscreen!

Marrakech, Morocco

Located between Spain and Algeria is the beautiful country of Morocco, which remains pretty warm through the month of October. The highs generally fall around the mid-80s, while lows at night are around the mid-50s, so the weather is much more amicable for hiking in the beautiful mountain ranges, and isn’t scorching hot along the beaches. We recommend making your home base Marrakech, one of the country’s most beloved cities filled with gardens, palaces, and lovely mosques — October brings budget-friendly hotel prices and nice weather for exploring the medina’s many shops and narrow alleyways.

A Luxury Hotel Pick: La Mamounia Marrakech

Gran Canaria, Spain

Just off the coast of Spain and Africa are the Canary Islands, best known for their volcanic origins and black- and white-sand beaches. In October, temperatures are generally in the high 70s and low 80s, allowing for a relaxed and comfortable island getaway. Though all of the islands are wonderful in their own way, consider a trip to Gran Canaria. Here you can find more than 37 miles of beaches, the famous dunes of Maspalomas, a biosphere reserve, a charming coastal village, and historic attractions like the Painted Cave.

An All-Inclusive Hotel Pick: Melia Tamarindos

Santa Barbara, California

There are many reasons to visit Santa Barbara, California, in October that go well beyond the fact that the weather is generally balmy (read: in the 70s) during the day. For one, Santa Barbara is well-known for its popular beaches, especially East Beach. It’s close to the Ynez Mountains and the local hiking favorite of Inspiration Point. Wine lovers will also appreciate the numerous wineries that allow for tours and tastings in the area. And don’t forget the shopping and attractions on State Street; some have said it provides a European market atmosphere, all in the warm and comfortable climate of California.

A Romantic Hotel Pick: Belmond El Encanto

3 strategies that will help you rock your first job, according to a careers expert who worked at Apple and Intuit for 20 years

$

woman surprised sunglasses listening

It's easy to make a huge deal out of your first post-college job.

But it's important that you treat the gig like the educational experience it is, not some high-stakes be-all and end-all.

Rachel Bitte, chief people officer at recruiting software company Jobvite, said it's crucial to adopt the right attitude.

"Be open to what it is you want to learn and what you want to contribute in that first opportunity," Bitte said.

And that educational experience isn't just about accruing and honing new skills.

Bitte said that your first job is a chance to begin solidifying your own personal values and mission. That way, you can check whether or not the role, organization, or industry seem to compliment what you really want to get out of work.

Here are three strategies that Bitte said can help you make the most out of your first job:

SEE ALSO: How to survive your terrible coworkers, according to a Stanford professor

DON'T MISS: 14 things successful people do in the first week of a new job

1. Don't chase money

Bitte said that the impulse to just jump at whatever job offers you the most money is an understandable one, especially considering the burden of student debt.

"I remember getting my first job in the Bay area and not really having enough money to pay my rent and my loans," she said.

However, she said "believe it or not," chasing money at the start of your career can be a huge mistake.

"My personal perspective, as hard as it was early on trying to save enough for a 401k, taking the money usually doesn't work out in the long haul," she said. "You've got to chase your passion."

She said that, in some cases, focusing exclusively on snagging a big pay check at the start of your career just leads to burnout.

"We spend way too much time and energy with the people we work with and the work that we do over a 40-year career," she said. "So the advice to chase the money? I don't think it's the best advice."

2. Don't overthink things

In this age of social-media-induced FOMO, it's easy to start dwelling on your ex-college roommate's posts gushing about her great new Silicon Valley gig.

That kind of thinking can make you feel discouraged about your own post-university prospects.

"Family members, friends, society, and social media — everybody's keeping up with the Jones'," Bitte said. "I think obsessing about something you can't always control, that can almost be destructive."

Ultimately, try to shut off the rest of the world and focus on getting the most out of the experience.

"Don't think that you have to go find the perfect job as your first job out of college," she said. "I think that's really hard to hear sometimes when you've just invested four, if not more, years of your life and you're coming out with student loans. But the best advice is to recognize that it's probably not going to be the job that you're going to have for even five years."

3. Focus on building relationships

"Relationships matter," Bitte said. "Don't underestimate your network."

While you shouldn't overthink your first job, you shouldn't underestimate the value of the strong professional connections you could forge there.

So start talking to your more experienced coworkers.

"Most people are really willing to share at least their experience in that industry," she said. "People are willing to talk about themselves. People are willing to share what they learned being in that field. So don't be afraid to go leverage that network, just to even learn."
