12 books every college freshman should read their first year

college student reading outside

College is a time of rapid discovery — not to mention uncertainty.

To help incoming freshmen cope with the onslaught of newness, librarian Gwen Glazer of the Readers Services department of the New York Public Library has pulled together some helpful titles.

They range from how-to books to thoughtful works of fiction.

We can't guarantee they'll produce straight As, but they should help freshmen make some sense of the world.

'Stuff Every College Student Should Know' by Blair Thornburgh

College helps students advance toward their careers, but it also helps teenagers become adults.

Thornburgh's book covers a wide range of skills all freshmen should have in their arsenal, including cooking with and without a microwave, cleaning a mini-fridge, and forming study groups.

As Glazer told Business Insider, it all comes together in a "handy pocket-sized guide."

'The Naked Roommate: and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College' by Harlan Cohen

A similar compendium of advice, "The Naked Roommate" covers a lot of ground for navigating the weird waters of college.

Much like the first day of kindergarten, freshman year involves a host of strange social interactions that have no well-defined etiquette.

The book talks about dating, relationships, going to class, how loans work, and other practical topics.

'Now You Tell Me' by Sheridan Scott, Nancy Allen, and Anya Settle

How-to books may offer a partial picture of university life, but only recent grads can offer the clearest picture of what newbies should expect.

"The title says it all!" Glazer said. "Learn from the experience of older students who were recently in your first-year shoes."

In "Now You Tell Me," the students bestow wisdom related to one-night stands, forming new friendships, and other situations that you may have a harder time finding in the typical how-to.

'Lazy slackers unite': Here's how French workers protested Emmanuel Macron's labour reforms

Macron labour protest

Hundreds of thousands of people took to France's streets on Tuesday to protest against new President Emmanuel Macron's labour reforms.

France's interior ministry said 223,000 people across the country took part in the protests, while organisers pegged the number at 400,000, according to Le Monde.

A word repeated throughout the day was "fainéant," or "slacker." Macron angered the public and politicians after he said he "will not cede to the slackers, cynics, or extremes" in his labour reform fight in Athens last Friday.

Learn more about the protest in the photos below.

Hundreds of thousands of workers around France protested President Macron's proposed labour reforms on Tuesday.

Macron's labour reforms would strengthen the bargaining power of employers, weaken that of unions, and end national-level protection of short-term contracts, among other changes, according to Politico.

The proposals came as Macron pledged to lower national unemployment from the current 9.5% to 7% by 2022, the BBC reported.

A national trade union called for strikes and protests across the country.

The General Confederation of Labour (CGT), France's second-largest trade union, called for 4,000 strikes and protests around the country, the Guardian reported.

Disruptions to Paris' transport sector were only limited to two commuter train lines, the Guardian said. Air traffic controllers also striked, which forced Ryanair to cancel 110 scheduled flights on Tuesday.

Macron called opponents of his labour reforms "slackers"— and demonstrators embraced it.

"I will not cede to the slackers, cynics, or extremes," Macron said in Athens last Friday, referring to opponents of his labour reforms, which drew ire among the public and politicians including Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who ran against him in the country's elections this May.

Macron told French newspaper Le Quotidien he "absolutely did not" regret his remarks.

"Lazy slackers unite,"the Guardian reported some demonstrators in the northern city of Caen as shouting.

10 Hollywood co-stars who are best friends in real-life — and 10 who hate each other

matt damon ben affleckThe INSIDER Summary:

  • While some Hollywood co-stars become best friends, others end up hating each other.
  • Here are 10 co-stars who are real life best friends, and 10 who hate each other.

Hollywood is a land of both friendships and rivalries. For every story of famous co-stars who sparked a special bond, you find an infamous tale of two actors with clashing egos. Study any era of Hollywood, from its golden age to its current mega-blockbuster saturated incarnation, and you’ll find pairs of stars who both love and despise each other.

Public fascination with celebrity BFFs and mortal enemies seems to be of equal fervor. As a society, we seem to find equal satisfaction with the lifelong friendship of Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire as we do the bitter feud between "Star Trek" veterans William Shatner and George Takei. We are warmed by the eternal bromances of Rogen and Franco, or Clooney and Pitt, yet we take morbid pleasure in the legendary feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Whether friends or enemies, there’s just something about the exaggerated relationships of larger-than-life Hollywood personalities that keep us fascinated in their world.

We live in an era where the stories behind movie productions are creating an industry as big as the film industry itself, but our fascination with the relationships between our favorite stars behind the scenes is hardly anything new. So let’s take a look back at some of Hollywood’s greatest friendships, as well as its most bitter feuds, with 10 co-stars who are real-life buddies (and 10 who hate each other).

20. Enemies: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams

A whole book could be written about movies that produce vicious feuds between their romantic leads. From Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in "Some Like It Hot" to Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts in "I Love Trouble," Hollywood has clocked in its fair share of on-screen romances-turned-behind-the-scenes squabbles. One of the most famous on-screen rifts of recent years was that of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in "The Notebook." The two had sufficient on-screen chemistry, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from having serious issues with one another between takes.

According to "Notebook" director Nick Cassavetes, Gosling and McAdams were at serious odds during the making of the movie. Gosling went so far as to ask Cassavetes to start auditioning other actresses to take McAdams’ place. Fortunately, the director ended up staging an intervention for the two leads, forcing them to get it all out in the open until their conflict was resolved. Production on the film remained rocky, but ultimately, tensions fizzled. The two leads even ended up in an off-screen relationship together for a while.

19. Buddies: Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams

Stark sisters Sansa and Arya may not always get along on "Game of Thrones," but their real-life counterparts are true best buds. One brief browse of the social media accounts of either actress will show that "GoT" stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have a special bond. The pair have been practically inseparable since the day they met, becoming one of the most adorable BFF pairings you could ever hope to see.

On screen, the two actresses have been apart for some time, portraying two very separate journeys for their respective characters, both geographically and thematically. The plot surrounding Sansa and Arya’s reunion in Season 7 was met with mixed reviews by fans and critics, but there’s no doubt that the real-life chemistry between the two actresses bled into their scenes together. "Game of Thrones" only has one season remaining, but here’s hoping we see Sophie and Maisie’s real life adventures together for many years to come.

18. Enemies: Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes

Stories of "Blade: Trinity’s" troubled production have been rolling out for years. Everything from studio overreach to difficulties between director David S. Goyer and star Wesley Snipes seemed to have doomed the third entry in the Blade film series from the start. But the most famous and longstanding tale of "Blade: Trinity’s" tricky shoot is the onset feud between Snipes and co-star Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds was far from the only person on the set of "Trinity" to endure abuse from the disgruntled Snipes, who reportedly spent the majority of production smoking marijuana in his trailer and mostly refusing to speak with Goyer. But it’s his colorful interactions with Reynolds that have gotten the most attention. Snipes was reported to have been disparaging to Reynolds frequently on set, calling him a “cracker” on more than one occasion.

The Aicon is a four-door, 2+2 electric concept. It has a curved, glass roof and angular ridges along the body — a unique design you don't see on present day models.

Audi says the car is designed to achieve a range of 435 miles. It has four electric motors over each wheel that produce 405 lb-ft of torque. Regenerative braking and a lightweight design help extend the car's range, Audi says.

The Aicon also supports wireless charging, allowing for a faster charge time. Audi says the battery can be charged to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes.

Incredible satellite photos show Florida and the Caribbean before and after Irma battered the regions

irma damageHurricane Irma has battered Florida and several Caribbean islands. Residents in affected areas, like Florida's Key West and the Caribbean's St. Martin, are now beginning to start the recovery process.

One of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded, Irma packed winds up to 185 mph, flooded streets, knocked out power lines, destroyed homes, and led to the deaths of at least 41 people

A Citi analyst estimates that costs could top $50 billion in the US. Though FEMA estimates that 25% of Key West homes are destroyed, the damage in Florida was not as extensive as in the Caribbean, especially in places like St. Martin, Barbuda, and the US Virgin Islands.

Earlier this week, companies that operate satellites and sell the image data — like Deimos Imaging, UrtheCast, and DigitalGlobe — published before-and-after photos of affected areas, including Key West and the Caribbean.

Here are some of the most dramatic views of the devastation. To compare pre- and post-Irma images, drag the slider to the left and right.

Everything we know about the 'It' sequel, which can't get here soon enough

It 2 Warner Bros

Following the incredible opening weekend at the box office for "It"— the adaptation of the classic Stephen King book which took in over $123.4 million last weekend (the biggest opening ever for the month of September) — everyone can't wait for the sequel to get here.

And though Warner Bros. hasn't officially pulled the trigger on a sequel (at least publicly), it's a foregone conclusion that it's going to happen That's especially true since at the end of the movie, the "It" title comes up on the screen, followed by "Chapter One."

Always intended to be two movies, the first looks at the Losers Club as kids when they first encounter Pennywise. The second will then jump to present day when the losers are adults and must return to Derry to take on Pennywise one last time. This mirrors the structure King did with the book.

"It" director Andres Muschietti revealed some plans he has for the sequel to Entertainment Weekly.

Below is everything we know that will happen in the sequel:

Warning: Spoilers coming!

SEE ALSO: 15 things Netflix's "Stranger Things" took from Stephen King's "It"

We'll still see the kid version of The Losers Club.

Despite the movie taking place 27 years after the events in the first "It" movie, Muschietti said there will be a place for the younger version of the losers as they will appear in flashbacks.

This will continue on one of the best elements of the first movie: the wickedly fun interactions between all the friends. But also flashing back brings more depth and understanding in the internal fears each loser still struggles with as an adult.

Will the adult losers be known actors or unknowns?

Almost instantly people took to social media after seeing "It" to throw out names of actors who could play the adult version of the Losers Club (Jessica Chastain as the fiery Bev? Chris Pratt as the once chubby Ben?). And though Muschietti admits he and his producers have been thinking about what do to since filming wrapped on the movie, there's still no official decision on how they will handle the casting.

The 1990 "It" TV movie was prominently made up of character actors (John Ritter was the only recognizable name), but times have changed, and with the success of the first movie there may be pressure to get at least a few stars in the club.

The one who stays in Derry becomes a librarian junkie.

One knock on "It" is Mike doesn't get a lot of screen time compared to the other losers. But that will likely change in Chapter Two.

Mike is the one member who doesn't leave Derry. He stays to watch for the return of Pennywise while working as a librarian, and staying behind, he ends up taking the brunt of Pennywise's powers.

“My idea of Mike in the second movie is quite darker from the book,” Muschietti told EW. “I want to make his character the one pivotal character who brings them all together, but staying in Derry took a toll with him. I want him to be a junkie actually. A librarian junkie. When the second movie starts, he’s a wreck.”

Mike will also take part in a ritual that will bring him better understanding of the origins of the alien behind the Pennywise clown, and how the defeat it for good. This is a portion of the book that was cut out of the first movie, but will certainly be of importance in the sequel.

Beneath the Antarctic ice, Weddell seals play in underwater caverns. Resplendent quetzals deliver food to their young in a Costa Rican cloud forest. And an elephant gazes at a photographer as her herd quenches its thirst by the edge of a waterhole.

Even as hurricanes and wildfires wreak havoc on much of the globe, the natural world is still full of beauty. The images in the 2017 Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest are a perfect reminder of that.

The contest is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London. One hundred images were selected from more than 50,000 contest entries from 92 countries around the world. The selection that we've published below are finalists in various categories — and two of the photos were taken by kids between the ages of 11 and 14.

The competition's winners will be announced October 17, and the full exhibition will be on display in London from October 20, 2017 through the spring of 2018. For those who can't go see the prints in person, here are 13 of the most stunning wildlife photos of 2017.

The Insider Pick:

When it comes to mixers, KitchenAid stand mixers are in a class of their own. In addition to mixing batters and kneading doughs, these mixers work with a wide array of attachments. If you own a KitchenAid already, you are only one attachment away from making your own pasta, straining and grinding fruits and vegetables, making sausage, spiralizing vegetables, creating homemade ice cream, grinding your own flour, or turning your mixer into a food processor.

Most of the attachments in our guide work with all KitchenAid mixers. The Pasta Extruder Attachment is the only accessory on our list that doesn’t fit every model.

We poured over the expert and user reviews to find out which attachments are worth buying based on value, long-lasting performance, and versatility. We chose the KitchenAid attachments for our guide after assessing the most common positive and negative attributes of the most popular accessories available.

The best KitchenAid attachments include the 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Attachment Set, the Fruit & Vegetable Strainer Set with Food Grinder Attachment, the Spiralizer Attachment with Peel, Core & Slice, the Pasta Extruder Attachment, the Ice Cream Maker Attachment, the All Metal Grain Mill Attachment, and the Food Processor Attachment.

The best KitchenAid attachment for pasta

Why you'll love it: With the KitchenAid 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Attachment Set, you turn your stand mixer into an all-inclusive homemade pasta maker.

If you have ever had fresh pasta, you know the pre-packaged dry stuff doesn’t compare. With the KitchenAid 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Attachment Set, you turn your KitchenAid stand mixer into a one-stop pasta shop. This set comes with a pasta roller that rolls six-inch sheets of pasta to eight different thicknesses, a fettuccine cutter to make fettuccine noodles, a spaghetti cutter that turns sheets of pasta into classic spaghetti noodles, and a cleaning brush. All of the pieces are made in Italy.

How does it work? First, you prepare the dough using the mixer. Then, flatten the dough, and feed it into the rollers on the 2-speed setting. This will knead it. You repeat the rolling process until the dough is smooth and pliable. You slowly decrease the thickness of the dough until it is at your desired thickness. Then, to make the noodles, you either feed it through the spaghetti cutter or the fettuccine cutter depending on what you want to make.

FabulousPasta is a website that reviews all types of pasta-making devices and accouterments. The site gave the 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter an expert assessment and liked that it provided an excellent rolling and cutting speed, the attachments were easy to switch out, and they took up little space and were lightweight. The testers didn’t like that a KitchenAid stand mixer was required and found that it made it pretty hard to lug their pasta-making operation to the homes of friends and family. However, if you're just making pasta at home, it's perfectly fine.

Around 87% of the reviews of the 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Attachment Set on Amazon are for five stars. Buyers liked how easy the roller and cutters are to use. However, it does require some practice to get accustomed to the attachments. Buyers also commented on how durably constructed each piece is and how easy they are to clean.

Pros: Built to last, easy to use when you follow the directions

Cons: Takes a little practice to get the pasta just right

Buy the KitchenAid KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Attachment Set on Amazon for $118.97 (originally $249.99)

The best KitchenAid attachment for grinding and straining

Why you'll love it: Whether you want to make your own sausage or you have a bounty of garden produce to process, the KitchenAid Fruit & Vegetable Strainer Set with Food Grinder Attachment can handle a broad range of tasks.

The KitchenAid Fruit & Vegetable Strainer Set with Food Grinder Attachment is really two accessories in one set. The strainer converts cooked pears and apples into sauces for immediate consumption or preserving. Making fresh tomato sauce is also a popular use.

The grinder comes with fine and coarse plates for making fresh hamburger, processing vegetables for salsa, and grinding your own cheese. These accessories work with any KitchenAid stand mixer, and if you want to make sausage, we recommend adding the Sausage Stuffer Kit Attachment to your order.

The top site that reviewed the strainer set with grinder attachment was Foodal, and the tester found it to be quite useful. The reviewer focused mainly on the ability of this set to strain fruits and vegetables for making purees, jams, baby food, jellies, and applesauce. The tester found it did an excellent job with all of these tasks, including creating a sorbet base to use with the Ice Cream Maker Attachment.

Around 90% of the reviewers on Amazon gave this attachment at least four stars. Many of the reviewers processed tomatoes with the attachment. They mention that it saved hours of work. A few buyers were concerned that it was made out of plastic and may not be durable enough for meat, but the plastic has proven to be long-lasting and sturdy.

Pros: Handles any soft meats, fruits, vegetables, or cheese

Cons: Made of plastic

Buy the KitchenAid FVSFGA Fruit & Vegetable Strainer Set with Food Grinder Attachment on Amazon for $81.82

The best KitchenAid attachment for spiralizing vegetables

Why you'll love it: The KitchenAid Spiralizer Attachment with Peel, Core & Slice is ideal for low-carb eaters, paleo dieters, individuals sensitive to gluten, and anyone else who wants an easy way to peel, slice, core, and spiralize vegetables, fruits, and more.

The KitchenAid Spiralizer Attachment comes with a versatile system of four quick-change blades plus a peeling blade. The blades include:

  • Fine Spiralizer Blade for sweet potatoes, beets, and zucchini
  • Medium Spiralizer Blade for sweet potatoes, potatoes, and zucchini
  • Spiral Slice Blades for Small and Large Cores for zucchini, apples, beets, and pears
  • Spiral Peeling Blade for potatoes and apples

All of the pieces fit into a simple storage case, and the set comes with a one-year replacement warranty.

Your Better Kitchen commented that the KitchenAid Spiralizer Attachment is a good buy because it is backed by a respected manufacturer and is made of durable metal. The site found it was useful for peeling potatoes and creating low-carb vegetable dishes. Heavy gave the spiralizer high ratings because of the multiple quick-change blades that make meal preparation simple. Heal With Food liked that this attachment streamlined healthy cooking, but questioned the high price tag.

On Amazon, more than 1,400 buyers gave the spiralizer positive reviews. Many of the reviewers compared the KitchenAid Spiralizer Attachment to manual, hand-cranked spiralizers, and they found it was a “dream” to work with. For instance, with a hand crank, it would take a couple minutes to spiral a zucchini, but with this attachment, it’s a matter of seconds. There were a couple minor complaints about how the device leaves about half an inch of the vegetable at the end, and the thinnest the spirals get is about 3/8-inch thick. (you can get thinner with the optional thin blade set).

Pros: Mostly metal construction, convenient storage for the four blades

Cons: Stops short of spiralizing the entire vegetable

How to use Apple's new iPhone X, which doesn't have a home button

iphone x

To bring us an edge-to-edge display on the iPhone X, Apple had to ditch the familiar home button that used to live on the bottom bezel of older iPhone models.

The home button on current iPhones serves several uses, like waking and unlocking the phone if you didn't have any security (naughty you), housing the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, bringing you back to the home screen from an app, pulling up the multitasking app slider menu, using Apple Pay, and summoning Siri.

So, without a home button, you may be wondering how you'd do any of the above with the home button-less iPhone X. Check it out:

SEE ALSO: I used the iPhone X, and I can already tell it'll be worth its $1,000 price

Tap the iPhone X's screen to wake.

On current and older iPhones, you could wake your phone by pressing the home button, raising the phone, or pressing the power/sleep button. Now that the home button is gone on the iPhone X, however, Apple has introduced a couple of new ways to wake the phone.

One way is to tap the screen to wake the iPhone X. You'll also be able to unlock the iPhone X using the sleep/power button and raising it.

Swipe from the bottom of the iPhone X to get to your home screen once your phone is unlocked.

Swiping up from the bottom of the iPhone X's screen replaces the action of pressing on the home button on the iPhone 8 and older iPhone models.

Use Face ID to unlock the iPhone X securely.

To unlock the new iPhone X with Face ID, you'll need to simply look at it: As long as your eyes are open and looking at the screen, the lock icon at the top of the iPhone X should then show an unlocked animation, which will allow you to access your home screen by swiping up from the bottom of the phone.

Face ID uses Apple's True Depth system with its various sensors in the iPhone X's front-facing  "notch" to detect your face and unlock the iPhone X.

Bill and Melinda Gates

Contrary to the doom and gloom found in Twitter feeds and nightly news broadcasts, there's ample evidence that humanity is headed in the right direction.

A new report from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation puts that progress in perspective.

The report, entitled "Goalkeepers: The Stories Behind the Data," sheds light on how far public health officials have come in the fight against infectious disease and poverty.

The Gates Foundation plans to release a new "Goalkeepers" report every year until 2030. Here are some of the biggest wins over the last 25 years.

SEE ALSO: 11 books on science Bill Gates thinks everyone should read

Childhood mortality

Since 1990, more than 100 million lives have been saved among kids 5 years and younger. The rate of death has fallen from 85 deaths per 1,000 live births to just 38.

"The key to keeping the momentum," according to the report, "will be helping countries (or regions within countries) with the weakest health systems build up the basic infrastructure they need to reach all children with lifesaving interventions."

Maternal mortality

Over the past 25 years, women have started giving birth in hospitals and health facilities more frequently than at home.

The biggest benefit: Mortality rates have fallen from 275 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 179 deaths in 2016.

"Skilled obstetrics care is key to saving mothers' lives, so countries must make sure that their facilities are fully supplied, staffed by skilled health professionals, and provide the highest quality of care," the report read.

Family planning

One of the strongest defenses against the spread of sexuallty-transmitted diseases is prevention.

Between 1990 and 2016, the Gates Foundation has observed an increase from 68% to 76% in the percentage of women of reproductive age who have their family planning needs met with modern contraception.

Rapper Tupac Shakur died 21 years ago, after succumbing to injuries from a shooting that took place on a Las Vegas street nearly a week before. He was only 25 years old. He would have been 46 today.

Shakur's controversial and influential career lasted just five years, but the world of rap music and the music industry at large still feels his impact two decades after his untimely death.

From his first appearance with the rap group Digital Underground to starring roles in Hollywood movies and his final, blockbuster studio album, "All Eyez on Me," Tupac shook up the culture and gained a massive following.

Here are the biggest moments of Tupac Shakur's career leading up to his death:

After studying poetry, theater, and music in high school, Shakur got his first break when he became a roadie and backup dancer for the rap group Digital Underground in 1990. His first music credit came on a soundtrack single for the 1991 Chevy Chase-led film "Nothing But Trouble," which he also appeared in.

In November 1991, Shakur released his debut solo album, "2Pacalypse Now," on Interscope Records. The album was certified gold for sales of 500,000 or more copies — minuscule compared to the success of his later records — but his social commentary on songs like "Brenda's Got a Baby" established him as an important voice in rap.

Shakur had his first starring role in the 1992 New York City crime thriller "Juice," acting alongside Omar Epps, Samuel L. Jackson, and Queen Latifah.

tracker 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Pets can get lost or run away from home, so it's often a good idea to get some kind of pet tracker. Our favorite pet tracker for dogs and outdoor cats is the Whistle 3 because it's a great GPS tracker that clips right onto a collar to track your pet's location and activity.

Any pet owner will agree that pets are more than just companions, they are members of the family. When a pet goes missing, it induces the same level of terror and heartbreak that a missing child would. Though it may not be practical to plant a tracking device on your child, there are many pet trackers out there that can help you keep tabs on your dog or cat.

Pet trackers come in all shapes and sizes, and they utilize different types of technology. Many pet trackers utilize GPS technology to track your pet’s movements and to show you his location within a certain radius. Some pet trackers incorporate additional benefits such as fitness or wellness tracking, and some implement training functions such as vibrations or gentle stimulation similar to a shock collar. There are even smart collars that can track your pet’s vitals.

The best pet trackers on the market aren’t cheap, so it definitely pays to do your homework to make sure you get the best model for your needs. Lucky for you, you don’t have to do all that research yourself. We have researched the top pet trackers available to bring you our top picks.

Although the Whistle 3 GPS Pet Tracker & Activity Monitor is our top pick for pet trackers, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Link AKC Smart Dog Collar, the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker, the FitBark, and the Pawtracker.

The best pet tracker overall

Why you'll love it: Pinpoint your pet’s location anywhere in the United States and track his daily activity with the Whistle 3 GPS Pet Tracker & Activity Monitor.

Dogs and outdoor cats tend to come and go as they please, and not always according to a particular schedule. Even if you want to give your pet the freedom to roam outside, you still want to know that he is safe — that is where a GPS cat collar comes in. These collars use GPS software to track your dog or cat so you can know where he is at all times. There are many GPS collars on the market, but our top choice is the Whistle 3 GPS Pet Tracker.

The third generation of this product offers enhanced coverage and performance over previous versions. Unlike Bluetooth-only pet trackers, the Whistle 3 offers nationwide coverage with a combination of GPS and cellular technology. This tracker even allows you to track your pet’s location over the past 24 hours and it will send you notifications when your pet leaves the safe zone you set up. The Whistle 3 is highly durable and waterproof, plus you can attach it to any collar up to 1-inch wide.

The well-regarded tech site PCMag gave the Whistle 3 high marks, its "Excellent" rating, and an Editor's Choice award for the best pet tracker because it's reliable, accurate, and suitable for most pets.

The Whistle GPS Pet Tracker was the top pick in GPS pet collars as rated by The SafeWise Report and it makes the top 10 list according to The Paw Tracker. The former speaks to the convenience and usability of the live-tracking GPS map and the activity monitoring app but also notes the paid service plan requirement. You will have to pay at least $6.95 a month to have access to that GPS signal.

Appcessories labels this GPS tracker one of the more affordable options on the market and speaks to the device’s sleek, aesthetically pleasing design. Amazon users are generally pleased with this third-generation model, though there may still be some kinks to work out. You can try the Whistle 3 GPS Pet Tracker risk-free for 90 days to see how you like it.

Pros: Pinpoint your pet’s location anywhere in the US, fast and accurate tracking with GPS and cellular technology, get alerts in app or text, create custom safe zones for your pet, monitor your pet’s activity, track your pet’s movements for 24 hours, durable waterproof design, attaches to existing collar

Cons: Only works in the United States, monthly subscription plan and Wi-Fi network required, may not work as well for pets under 8 pounds, notifications may be delayed

The best affordable dog tracking GPS collar

Why you'll love it: The Link AKC Smart Dog Collar tracks your pup's location and his activity with great accuracy.

If your dog likes to roam away from home, the Link AKC Smart Dog Collar will give you peace of mind.  The collar has built-in GPS and activity tracking, so you know where your dog is and if he's exercising enough.

To use the GPS tracking, you have to pay for a service plan, which costs $9.95 per month, $95.40 for one year, or $166.80 for two years. Although it's expensive, the plan also comes with a three-year replacement warranty, support from the Pet Poison Hotline in the app, and the ability to upgrade your collar if your pup outgrows it.

The genuine leather collar comes in several sizes, including small (9 to 14 inches), medium (14 to 17.5 inches), large (17 to 21 inches), and XL (20.5 to 25 inches).

In addition to location and activity tracking, the Link collar has a remote-controlled light, so you can see your dog in the dark. The collar has some training features, which include app-controlled sounds. It supposedly keeps tabs on your dog's temperature, too, though PCMag said it didn't work in its testing. Overall, the reviewer liked this collar a lot, even though it is expensive.

Buyers on Amazon agree that the collar is worth the money, especially since it's made from leather. They also like the activity and location tracking, though some said they have syncing issues. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Reliable GPS, tracks location, monitors activity, training features, a light for night time, leather collar

Cons: Pricey, bulky

The best high-end dog tracking GPS collar

Why you'll love it: With powerful GPS and GLONASS tracking, the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker monitors your dog in a nine-mile range, viewing his location and direction as well as his speed.

Many pet owners microchip their pets, just in case they ever get lost. A microchip will help identify your pet if he gets lost and someone finds him, but it won’t help you locate your pet – a GPS pet tracker will. A GPS pet tracker not only allows you to locate your pet within a certain radius, but some models offer live-tracking in addition to other benefits. Our top choice for GPS pet trackers is the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker.

Though initially designed for hunters who need to keep track of multiple dogs, the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker is by far the most powerful and accurate pet tracker on the market and can be useful for the average dog owner as well. This tracker consists of a GPS-integrated collar with a handheld receiver that features a 3-inch color touch screen, preloaded with TOPO U.S. 100k mapping, as well as a rechargeable battery. Not only can you view your dog’s location and direction, but the device will also tell you the speed at which he is traveling.

As a review from Top Dog Tips states, the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker may be more powerful and more expensive than the average dog owner needs, but it is by far the most powerful tracking device available for pet owners. The Canine Journal names this tracker their top pick for sporting dogs, praising the device’s ability to train and track multiple dogs in the field as well as the available 18 levels of continuous and momentary stimulation for training purposes. This tracker only has 45 reviews on Amazon, but it has a 4.5-star rating.

Purchase the Garmin Alpha 100 GPS Pet Tracker for $799.99 with no subscription plan necessary. When you purchase the device on Amazon, you also receive a free 1-year subscription to BirdsEye.

Pros: Incorporates GPS and GLONASS tracking, industry-leading 9-mile tracking range, track up to 20 dogs at once, additional dog training features, set safe zones and receive automatic alerts, LED beacon lights and rescue mode, 18 levels of continuous and momentary stimulation for training purposes

Cons: May not be ideal for very small dogs, user interface takes time to get used to, screen could be larger for easier viewing, very high purchase price, battery only lasts 20 to 40 hours, collar may be too large for everyday wear

30 Rock

There are always shows that dominate the Emmys. This year, some favorites include "Westworld,""SNL,""Big Little Lies,""This Is Us," and "The Handmaid's Tale."

But while some Emmy darlings are expected and obvious, you might be surprised that some of your favorite shows of all time don't have as many Emmys as you think think — or any at all.

"Friends" only won six Emmys during its run and "Seinfeld" only won ten. How about HBO's critically-acclaimed series "The Wire?" Zero wins, two nominations.

But some audience and critic favorites do make the list for the most Emmy wins ever. Although it's not nominated this year, "Game of Thrones" is incredibly close to breaking "SNL's" record. "Breaking Bad,""Mad Men," and "Frasier" were also consistent favorites during awards season, and it shows in their double-digit wins and for some, three-digit nominations.

The 69th annual Emmy Awards begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Sunday night, and will air live coast-to-coast on CBS.

Here are the 19 shows with the most Emmy wins:

SEE ALSO: Here are all the 2017 Emmy nominees — Netflix, HBO, and 'SNL' lead the way

"Breaking Bad"— 16 wins and 58 nominations

"Breaking Bad" won outstanding drama series twice for the fifth and final season, since it was split in two. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul won three Emmys for their roles.

"30 Rock"— 16 wins and 103 nominations

"30 Rock" was once an Emmys darling. Its first season got ten Emmy nominations, and it got 17 in its second season. The show won outstanding comedy series three years in a row.

"Mad Men"— 16 wins and 116 nominations

Jon Hamm had a lot of competition in the lead actor in a drama category, so after seven nominations, he didn't get his first win until his final shot in 2015. In its first four seasons, "Mad Men" won outstanding drama. The show also won several awards for writing, directing, and hairstyling.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand going into Week 2

Pete Carroll Seahawks

Week 1 of the NFL season is complete.

While there were some fun moments in the opening week — the Chiefs topping the Patriots, the Broncos and Chargers coming down to an iced field goal — it also provided plenty of blowouts and unfortunate injuries.

Heading into Week 2, we'll be without David Johnson and Eric Berry and still have no idea when Andrew Luck returns. The Seahawks and Giants will be facing seemingly big tests to see if their respective offenses have more juice than lackluster Week 1 performances showed.

Meanwhile, there will be some intriguing storylines to watch. Can the Packers continue a strong defensive showing against the explosive Falcons? Can the Jaguars really be a true ground-and-pound threat in the AFC South? Can the Texans settle on a quarterback?

Take a look at where every team stands heading into Week 2:

32. New York Jets

Record: 0-1

Last week: Lost to Buffalo Bills 21-12

This week: at Oakland Raiders

One thing to know: Unsurprisingly, the Jets had trouble moving the ball on offense in Week 1. Quarterback Josh McCown averaged just 4.8 yards per completion, had two interceptions, and the running backs managed just 38 total yards on 15 carries for an average of 2.5 yards per rush.

31. San Francisco 49ers

Record: 0-1

Last week: Lost to Carolina Panthers 23-3

This week: at Seattle Seahawks

One thing to know: While crowd size was a big issue in Los Angeles during Week 1, San Francisco didn’t have much of a fan base either. Given the team’s current construction and play, it’s not hard to see why.

30. Indianapolis Colts

Record: 0-1

Last week: Lost to Los Angeles Rams 46-9

This week: vs. Arizona Cardinals

One thing to know: The Colts may turn to newcomer Jacoby Brissett at quarterback as Andrew Luck's return continues to be a mystery.
