Los Angeles

While certain places in the US are particularly good for finding love, others are good for just having fun.

WalletHub conducted a recent study to determine the most fun cities in America. The study looked at the 150 most populated cities in the US, and then compared them across three categories:

  • Entertainment and recreation: number of attractions, sports facilities, restaurants, hiking trails, parks, etc.
  • Nightlife and parties: number of bars, beer gardens, dance clubs, music venues, etc.
  • Costs: wine and beer prices, restaurant meal prices, price for a three-star hotel room, cost of living, etc. (The higher a city ranked in this category, the cheaper it is.)

Below are the cities that ranked in the top 30. Four Florida cities made it into the top 30 as well as three California cities. New York City took third place whereas Chicago barely made the top 10, taking ninth place.

Keep scrolling to see what other US cities are your best bet for having a good time.

30. Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha is not only a good place to have fun, it's also a relatively cheap place to do it. The Midwestern city rounded out the top 15 in the costs category.

29. Dallas, Texas

Dallas ranked in the top 25 of the overall nightlife and parties category.

28. Richmond, Virginia

Richmond rounded out the top 30 in the overall entertainment and recreation category.

Mathieu van der Poel Stevens Super Prestige cyclocross bike

WATERLOO, Wisconsin — The rising cycling star Mathieu van der Poel has arrived here to do battle in Sunday's World Cup Waterloo, the second round of the 2017-2018 Telenet UCI Cyclocross World Cup nine-race series. The young Dutch sensation won last's week opening round of the cup in Iowa City, Iowa, at Jingle Cross and is now looking to defend his lead this weekend in the Badger State before he and the world-class series head back to Europe.

At 22, Van der Poel is already a multi-time world champion on the road and in cyclocross. His father, Andri, is a former world champion in cyclocross who also won stages in the Tour de France and several classics; his maternal grandfather, Raymond Poulidor, won the Vuelta a España and was runner-up at the Tour three times.

Van der Poel is the best rider in world cyclocross so far this season, though the reigning world champion, Wout van Aert, and other top rivals will try to spoil Van der Poel's party this weekend. Temperatures will be unkind to all the riders, with the forecast calling for 85 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday afternoon — very hot for what's traditionally a fall-winter sport.

Business Insider got a close-up look at Van der Poel's bike. See the photos below.

SEE ALSO: The most talked-about cycling brand has finally come to America, and it wants to disrupt the bicycle industry by selling some of the world's best bikes directly online at a steep discount, but insiders say it faces fierce headwinds

Van der Poel rides a 58 cm carbon Stevens Super Prestige. According to Stevens, it weighs 8.2 kilograms, or 18 pounds.

10 mistakes people make the first time they work out

sneakers exercise gym workoutThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Starting to workout is the hardest part, but making sure you do it right is also challenging.
  • New gym members may result to copying their neighbor, which can be extremely dangerous.
  • The first step to remedying bad habits is knowing what they are.

Congrats! You found the motivation to hit the gym and start working out. The issue is this: if you commit these exercise mistakes, your first workout could be your last.

With the hardest part over — getting started — the best is yet to come. But, for many first timers at the gym, the busy scene can be quite frightening. Unsure of what to do, you may walk on the treadmill, or attempt to pump some iron. You’re likely to spot someone who appears as if they know what they are doing, and your gut may tell you to do what they do. Copying your neighbor may seem like enough to learn the swing of the ropes, but unfortunately it isn't.

In fact, a mentality like that can get you injured, and cause you to overwork certain parts of your body. You could even be doing everything wrong, even if it feels right! To unveil the most common workout mistakes beginners make in the gym, we reached out to three fitness experts. The first steps in remedying these bad habits — or not picking them up at all — is knowing what they are. And that’s why we’re pointing them out.

And as you read this list, don’t sweat it. You’re not alone, and we’re here to help. Banish these 10 common workout mistakes, and your journey to reach your weight loss goal will be a whole lot easier. And to make your goal even easier still, check out our list with 44 Ways to Lose 4 Inches of Body Fat.

You're over enthusiastic

The rookie mistake when you get your first paycheck? Spend it all. The same goes the first time you hit the gym, as well. You put all of your energy into one session. Boom! Bring on the exhaustion. Which then, may provide you with reasons to create to excuses the next time you should be working out. It can also lead to injury. Dr. Derek Ochiai, a board certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert, explains: “Deciding to push yourself hard and fast from the getgo increases the chances of overuse tendonitis, which can be a reason or excuse to stop going to the gym.” Instead, don’t be afraid to ease into your new activity. In fact, there are plenty of simple ways to boost your weight-loss goals, and most of them don’t even involve the gym! Check out these 31 Sneaky Ways To Work Out—Without Hitting The Gym.

You compete against the wrong person

The gym can quickly become a self-confidence-destroying zone. Becoming your fittest self takes time and everyone has their own set of limits when it comes to the ways and speed at which their bodies can grow in strength. “Instead of trying to match weights or pace with the person next to you, try to compete against yourself, and incrementally increase [your personal best,]” says Dr. Ochiai. You can be your biggest competition and your best supporter, too!

You try to cram a workout in

Slow and steady wins the race — always. Just like with dieting, the best results are the ones you achieve over time. Dr. Ochiai explains that rushing a workout is never a bright idea: “Everyone is busy, but don't try to cram in extra weight or intensity if you're pressed for time.” Instead, he recommends that you take it easy. Build in a warm up time, such as on a bike, before starting the rest of your work out,” he says. One suggestion: Pencil in the amount of time you’ll need each day to achieve those body shaping goals. By giving yourself permission in this way, you’ll be more satisfied with your workout at the end of each period — and you’ll be more likely to actually complete your goals. Chances are if you feel the time is crammed you’ll give yourself more reasons to not work out at all.

3 times it's smarter not to speak up at work

man woman talking office upset fight coworker boss interview mistake

If a friend offends you or says something wrong, you're probably quick to call them out for it. And if it got to a point where they were really starting to annoy you, you might even stop hanging out with them.

At work, we don't have that luxury. We can't just call people out who do something that bothers us. So, how we respond to comments or actions that rub us the wrong way becomes a tad trickier.

When should you speak up? And when should you let it slide?

There are certain situations in which it's definitely OK to interrupt to set the record straight, but other times, doing so ends up escalating the situation and putting other people on the defense. And you know that rarely ends well.

To help guide you through those gray areas, here are three times it's better to stay quiet in the moment (even when it feels unfair):

SEE ALSO: 24 things you should never say to your coworkers

DON'T MISS: 33 things you should never say to your boss

1. When your coworker presents your idea as their own in a big meeting

While it's obviously not cool for your colleague totake credit for your ideas, you can't exactly blurt out "Mine!" in a meeting.

Instead

Your best bet? Approach them after the meeting in private — and approach them with the mindset that this wasn't on purpose.

Now that doesn't mean you can't be direct; it just means you don't want to start the conversation by making them out to be the bad guy: "I heard you mention the new data strategy in our meeting. I'm really excited for it and that's why I shared it with you yesterday. In the future, I'd appreciate if you credited me in team meetings when you're discussing ideas we spoke about."

Sometimes this approach leads to an apology or an explanation — one that makes you feel like it's resolved. Other times it doesn't.

If they try to defend themselves or pretend they did nothing wrong, you should make a mental note not to share your ideas with them in the future. That's not the most ideal response, but it might be in your best interest if you think they're actively using your ideas to get ahead.

2. When your boss calls you out for a mistake in front of everyone

Part of being successful and getting ahead at work is learning how to own up to your mistakes and learn from them. But, this is easier said than done when your boss embarrasses you in front of your whole team by calling you out on a misstep. Your first instinct may be to defend yourself, but that's not always the best move. Why? This will automatically put your boss in a bad light, which will likely respond in him getting defensive and perhaps even doubling down.

Instead

Assuming you did in fact mess up, apologize in front of the group (even if you have privately to your manager already). Keep it short and professional — no need to go on and on or be too hard on yourself.

Then, avoid this situation going forward by setting up a meeting with your boss and discussing how they can give you feedback in a more appropriate setting.

It may look something like this: "Again, I truly apologize for what happened, and would love to continue working with you to meet expectations. After you discussed [my mistake/where you feel I'm lacking] in front of the team, my confidence in my work was a bit shaken. Would it be possible in the future to meet one-on-one to discuss those types of personal issues?"

Often times, your manager will apologize to you and refrain from doing it again. After all, they didn't wake up with the goal of bursting your ego. But if they do?Read this articleon how to deal with a boss you don't get along with.

3. When you get passed over for a promotion or project and your less-than-favorite coworker gets the job

There are few things worse than being turned down for something youreallywanted and worked hard for, but knowing a colleague (and especially one you're not fond of) landed it instead of you just plain sucks. And you might want to respond to the announcement with, "That's not fair — I've worked here longer!" But, as you know, saying that won't exactly give off the leadership vibes you're looking for.

Instead

First, put aside any personal feelings and send along a (sincere) congratulations — even if you don't like them, you'd expect the same respectful reaction if the roles were reversed.

Then, don't be afraid to approach your boss about why you got passed over. It shouldn't be an "I'm better than him" conversation, but rather an honest and candid one asking what you'd have to do or change to land a similar promotion.

In addition, look to the promotee for pointers. Because, as Muse writer Lily Herman says abouttaking the high roadwhen a colleague is more successful, "You learn some of the tips and tricks that are pushing your colleague ahead — and you give this person a nice little ego boost that'll probably make him or her like you more."

You may not be able to control how others treat you, but youcancontrol how you react to them. And by being the bigger person, you prove you're a professional who knows how to pick the fights that matter.

Facebook just dropped $35 million to take over all 33 floors of commercial space at 181 Fremont, a mixed-use skyscraper that will the third tallest building in San Francisco upon completion in 2017. It's the social media giant's first outpost in San Francisco.

A new Netflix scandal involves a children's show, a drawing of male genitals, and potential legal action

Maya the Bee

It turns out that "American Vandal," Netflix's original series about a genital-drawing mystery, isn't Netflix's only show to feature drawings of male sex organs.

Netflix is currently dealing with a scandalous drawing featured in "Maya the Bee," an animated children's series the streaming service distributes.

"Maya the Bee" follows the adventures of Maya, a bee, who has left her hive to explore the world outside of it.

She meets new friends who are not bees, and learns some lessons along the way. She also unknowingly stumbles upon a rock with a drawing of male genitalia on it.

Some parents recently noticed the drawing in a season one episode, and are outraged. The episode was removed from Netflix earlier this week, and now the production company is suing the rogue animator who allegedly put the drawing in the episode. The story continues to unfold.

Here's everything you need to know about the controversy surrounding "Maya the Bee" on Netflix:

SEE ALSO: The 19 movies that audiences have hated the most in the last 30 years

Parents noticed the drawing on a rock in a scene and caused uproar on social media.

Variety reports that Chey Robinson appears to have been the first to share the drawing. She wrote this on Facebook:

“Please be mindful of what your kids are watching. I did NOT edit any images whatsoever, this is ‘Maya the Bee,’ Season 1, Episode 35. I know I’m not going crazy and I know that something like this shouldn’t be in a kids’ show whatsoever. I’m extremely disgusted by it, there should be no reason my kids have to see something like this. I don’t know if they’re gonna do something about this or what, but there’s no reasons why this should be in this show.”

Netflix removed the episode (season one, episode 35) on Tuesday.

In response to the negative reaction once parents discovered the genitalia drawing, Netflix removed the episode entirely.

The production company, Studio 100, blamed a rogue artist for including the drawing in the episode, calling it a "very bad joke."

Studio 100 released this statement to Variety on Friday:

“An absolutely inappropriate image has been discovered in a four-second fly-by scene in one episode of the total of 78 episodes of the series. The origin of this image obviously results from a very bad joke from one of the 150 artists working on the production.”

Breaking down the chances of every team remaining in the MLB Wild Card race

$

Mike Trout

We're entering the final days of the MLB regular season, and as usual, the Wild Card races are coming down to the wire.

While the American League race has been characterized by a crowded, clustered field of evenly matched teams, the National League race has been much easier to make sense of, with two squads from the West division maintaining a significant advantage over the chasing pack for most of the season.

In the end, only two from each league will advance to a one-game playoff, and both races have the potential to provide intrigue until the very last day.

Most teams have just three series remaining on the schedule, so this is the perfect time to take stock of the remaining Wild Card contenders. Below, check out our breakdown of the best second- and third-place teams in baseball, starting with the American League.

New York Yankees

Record: 85-67

Upcoming opponents: Toronto Blue Jays (two series), Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals (one-game makeup)

FanGraphs postseason odds: 100%

Key stat: 811 runs scored, the second-most in baseball

One thing to know: After missing out in 2016, the Yankees are on the brink of clinching their first postseason berth in two years. In a tacit rejection of the team's spend-happy past, young players like Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, and Luis Severino have been a huge reason for that success.

Minnesota Twins

Record: 79-74

Upcoming opponents: Detroit Tigers (two series), Cleveland Indians

FanGraphs postseason odds: 73%

Key stat: 59-103 record in 2016, the worst in baseball

One thing to know: No team has ever lost 100 games in a season and gone on to make the playoffs the following year. With a 2.5-game lead over their closest pursuers, the Twins have a great chance to become the first.

Los Angeles Angels

Record: 76-76

Upcoming opponents: Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners

FanGraphs postseason odds: 15%

Key stat: 105 games played for Mike Trout

One thing to know: The Angels' roster is as top-heavy as it gets. It features three superstars in Mike Trout, Andrelton Simmons, and Justin Upton, but the rest of the lineup is simply unimpressive.

This startup makes pants that are more comfortable than jeans and more stylish than sweatpants

IRV_9928While dressing professionally for the office might be a regular routine, it's still only a part of your day-to-day life.

When you're not in work mode, comfort is probably the number one factor in deciding what to wear. For some people, a pair of lazy sweatpants is the default choice.

Sure, sweatpants are fine for sleeping in, lounging around the house, or even working out, but they aren't stylish.

For a day of running errands or a casual night out for drinks with friends, normal sweatpants definitely won't cut it. Thankfully, there's a solution — the Public Rec All Day Every Day Pant.

Known for its technical leisure apparel for men, Public Rec launched in 2015 after a widely successful Kickstarter campaign. With an original goal of raising $15,000, the company exceeded that by more than $160,000.

Using a blend of nylon and spandex, the All Day Every Day Pant is very soft, with the right amount of stretch, and a look suitable for wearing in public. Designed to be more stylish than sweatpants and more comfortable than jeans, the pants quickly sold out and even generated a 1,200-person long waiting list

They've since been made available again and now there are three new colors —Navy, Stone Grey, and Heather Burgundy. Other members of the Insider Picks team have reviewed the ADED Pant in the past, but the company sent over one of the new colors for me to check out.

Public Rec already makes the best fitting T-shirt I've ever worn, so I was extremely excited to try out the All Day Every Day Pant.

I almost never wear sweatpants because I believe most options aren't fit for wearing in public, but the Public Rec All Day Every Day Pant is an exception to that rule – the look of the pants is definitely my favorite thing about them.

While most other sweatpants come in sizes like small, medium, and large, the ADED Pant uses waist and inseam measurements, so you'll get a fit that's not baggy or sloppy. The waist also features a drawstring for added comfort and fit.

IRV_9912Much like the Go-To Tee, the ADED Pant is super soft and stretchy. With same attributes that made the T-shirt so great, the pants are amazing, too. The stretch allows for full range of motion, compared to being restricted in jeans.

While most sweatpants have shallow front pockets and maybe one rear pocket, the ADED Pant has two front pockets and two rear pockets — all of which are stretchy, allowing for ample space for you wallet, phone, keys, and other belongings.

If you're looking for the perfect pair of pants to wear outside of the office, don't settle for jeans and traditional sweatpants. As the name suggests, you'll want to wear Public Rec's widely popular All Day Every Day Pant all day, every day.

How Lady Gaga spends her $275 million fortune

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga may have once written a song called "Money Honey," but cash isn't everything for the pop artist.

"Money has been put on a pedestal, beauty has been put on a pedestal, celebrity has been put on a pedestal," she told the crowd at one 2016 London concert, according to The Telegraph.

Still, with a fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars, it's interesting to see what kind of costs Gaga is racking up.

The star — whose real name is Stefani Germanotta — recently offered fans an intensely personal glimpse of her life in the new Netflix documentary "Gaga: Five Foot Two."

Here's what we know the pop star spends her money on:

Since bursting onto the scene with her 2008 debut album "The Fame," Gaga has acquired a net worth of around $275 million.

But, in Gaga's case, fortune didn't immediately follow fame. Despite her success, she found herself $3 million in debt after her Monster Ball tour, which ran from 2009 to 2011.

"I remember I called everybody and said, 'Why is everyone saying I have no money? This is ridiculous, I have five No. 1 singles,'" she told the Financial Times. The culprit of her money woes turned out to be the tour's multitude of lavish costumes.

The best value plays in your DraftKings lineup for Week 3 of the NFL season

Chris Thompson Washington Redskins

Thursday Night Football offered more action than expected, with the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Los Angeles Rams in what turned out to be quite a barn burner of a game.

With a full slate ahead on Sunday, Week 3 presents plenty more opportunities for excitement, especially for daily fantasy players looking to make a quick buck on DraftKings, FanDuel, or wherever you choose to play.

When forming your daily fantasy lineup, it's always important to look for value plays in the mid- to lower-tier price ranges. Everyone wants to load their teams with studs sure to light up the box score, but it's finding the undervalued players that allows you to max out your budget on the likes of Julio Jones and Matt Ryan this week.

Below we've picked some of our best value plays for daily fantasy players. Consider them when trying to find a few extra dollars to upgrade elsewhere in your lineup.

QB: Matthew Stafford, $6,200

Matthew Stafford and the Lions looked like a professional football team against the Giants in Week 2, jumping out to an early lead and protecting it comfortably. Against the Falcons this week, they'll likely be forced to throw to keep pace in a shootout. Stafford currently leads the league in touchdown passes and has an arm that can throw just as much as Matt Ryan will. At $6,200, he's a solid value play if you're looking to save at quarterback.

RB: Isaiah Crowell, $4,800

The Browns have shown a desire to establish the run in both of their games so far this season, a desire that is often quickly distinguished thanks to an early deficit. Against the Colts, football fans can expect more of a back-and-forth match between fairly equally matched teams, meaning the Browns can execute their gameplan with Crowell as the likely beneficiary.

RB: Chris Thompson, $4,500

Chris Thompson proved a valuable weapon for the Redskins last week, scoring two touchdowns including taking one rush 61 yards to the house. He's also involved in the Washington pass game, giving him added value in fantasy. Jay Gruden always has multiple rushing threats, but with Rob Kelley listed as questionable and taking limited snaps in practice, Thompson could see the lion's share of the action against a vulnerable Raiders defense.

Beyonce and Jay Z

It was an expensive summer for Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

Less than two months after the billion-dollar power couple purchased a 2-acre hillside estate in Los Angeles for $88 million, they've scooped up a $26 million Hamptons property, reports Trulia.

The 12,000 square-foot mansion is located in East Hampton, New York, and sits adjacent to Georgica Pond.

The Carters currently hold Forbes' title of the highest-paid celebrity couple in the world, with a combined fortune of $1.16 billion.

The entertainment moguls have famously been serial renters, only recently settling down as homeowners after the birth of their twins in June.

Below, take a peek inside Beyoncé and Jay-Z's new Hamptons abode.

Designed by architect Stanford White and built a century ago, the home has been renovated and expanded over the years to incorporate new, modern amenities.

The property includes a detached, 1,800-square-foot guest cottage. There's also a 45-foot-long infinity pool and accompanying spa.

Elevated on a two-acre site with over 200 feet of waterfront on Georgica Pond, it's private and secluded. The previous owner reportedly rotated the original house 90-degrees to frame the views of the waterfront from the living room.
