Booming tech ecosystems are causing rents to surge in cities around the world as tech startups and larger corporates look to snap up the best digs on offer.

Despite what you might have heard, San Francisco is no longer home to the most expensive tech district, according to the "Global Cities" report, released by property consultancy Knight Frank this week.

James Nicholson, a partner at Knight Frank, said in a statement: "Creating great 'user experience' is paramount for those looking to attract and retain the best talent.

"This direct association between workplace and talent has forced businesses to prioritise working environment over and above a general desire to keeping costs low."

Here are the 29 most expensive tech hubs worldwide based on the price of office space per sq ft.

29. Bengaluru — Whitefield: $9.65

28. Kuala Lumpur — Cyberjaya Office Market: $11.55

I bought the incredibly popular and hard-to-find SNES Classic from Amazon's new Treasure Truck — here's what it was like

Amazon Treasure Truck SNES Classic

Sometimes, fortune smiles on you.

It did on me on Friday — and I ended up with a Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition as a result!

There I was, going about my usual end-of-the-week routine, when a colleague mentioned that Amazon was selling the incredibly hard-to-get console on a nearby street corner through one of its Treasure Trucks.

To get one, all I'd have to do is place an order through Amazon's mobile app.

I jumped at the chance.

I had actually already pre-ordered the SNES Classic, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. My pre-order isn't set to arrive until October 3, and I wanted the SNES Classic now.

So, I fired up the Amazon app, tapped the order button, went down to the truck, which was parked at the corner of 28th and Broadway in Manhattan, and got my console.

Amazon's Treasure Truck program has already been running in Seattle for the last year and a half, but it rolled out to several major cities in the US on Friday. Every day, Amazon picks a hot product and loads into its Treasure Trucks. After you sign up for the program — assuming it's available in your city — you'll get texts alerting you to the featured product of the day. If you want to buy it, you just order it from the Amazon app, and pick it up from a truck.

The product of the day on Friday was the SNES Classic, which the company offered through its Treasure Trucks in their various US locations.

When I reached the Treasure Truck, I found a decent-sized crowd.

The trucks themselves looked pretty nifty.

First thing first, get the SNES Classic.

It was a little unclear where I had to go to get my SNES Classic, but I just followed the calls from the Amazon team, who were shouting "codes over here!" They were referring to the QR codes people received once they ordered the game machine.

If you're lucky enough to have a tech salary, these are the 10 cities to get the most bang for your buck

commuters in nyc

If you're a tech worker and command one of the industry's typically much-better-than average paychecks, where's the best place to live?

The easy answer is San Francisco or Silicon Valley, given that they are collectively ground zero for the tech industry, and area companies are well known for offering huge paychecks and benefits to woo workers away from the competition.

But the Bay Area also has some of the highest living costs in the country. All those young, talented employees pulling down sky-high salaries have driven up the price of everything from housing to avocado toast. And other metro areas more than make up for lower salaries when the cost of living is factored in.

So the answer isn't as simple as it might seem.

Enter Indeed. The job site has taken a look at which cities offer the best deals for tech workers. It took the annual salary information users from the top 25 metro areas submitted to it between August 2016 and July 2017 and adjusted for each area's cost of living.

Here's its list of the top 10 best metropolitan areas — including big cities and their nearby suburbs — for techies to work, ranked in order of adjusted salaries:

Here are the 16 biggest bankruptcies of the 'retail apocalypse' of 2017

Toys R Us

2017 hasn't been an easy year for the retail industry.

More than 6,400 store closures have been announced so far this year. Mall traffic has dropped, and retailers such as Payless, Rue21, and Toys R Us have struggled to compete with ecommerce rivals.

For some companies, the pressure became too much. A growing list of retailers have declared bankruptcy.

Here are the most notable retail bankruptcies to happen so far in 2017:

Toys R Us

The toy retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-September.

Since it was taken private in 2005, Toys R Us has struggled to compete with both its ecommerce and its brick-and-mortar competitors, like Target and Walmart, that have built up their online business.

Aerosoles

Aerosoles Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-September.

The women's shoe retailer said that it planned to significantly reduce the number of its stores in an effort to better compete with ecommerce rivals. Aerosoles had 300 stores around the world at the time it declared bankruptcy.

Vitamin World

The vitamins and nutritional supplements chain announced plans to file for bankruptcy in September. The 345-location chain said it hoped to end certain expensive lease agreements in restructuring

I'm a tech exec who hiked Mt. Everest to help refugees — and it taught me what it really takes to be successful

Elena KvochkoElena Kvochko is a CIO specializing in computer security for a financial services company and is a well-known expert in cyber security.

I immigrated to the US nearly a decade ago to complete my graduate studies after studying and working in Europe and my original country of Russia. I soon fell in love with the US and made it my permanent home.

The opportunities here for my line of work, technology and information security, have been amazing. I also found the US to have the most inspiring people and culture. Anyone, regardless, of who who they are or where they come from has a chance at their dreams.

That’s not true for everyone in the world. Despite all the positive developments in our economy and the many challenges we have solved as a global community, we still bear witness to inequality, lack of hope and tendency to resist change.

Elena Mt Everest 06Still, I have to admit, working in a growing industry makes it easier to forget what might be happening in other parts of the world. I kept feeling like maybe there was some bigger way to contribute.

Then I was introduced to Refugees International, a DC-based non-profit that helps identify the needs of displaced people to bring them protection and assistance. I decided to take on a big challenge to help raise awareness for this organization and their life-saving work.

And that's how I found myself signing on for an expedition to hike in the Mt. Everest region, up to 18,000 feet. It wasn't a summit expedition. I’m not a mountain climber and I live in New York, at sea level. But the lessons I learned from this experience have forever changed how I think about my life, what it means to be successful and how to accomplish any goal.

Ascending to over 18,000 feet wasn’t something I had done before. And I'm not a fan of heights or cold weather. I was hoping by picking something that was hard for me, I would inspire at least some of my friends to challenge themselves and contribute to the causes they care about.

I was nowhere near physically ready. As advised by friends, I trained for the lack of oxygen at over 18,000 feet by strapping on an altitude training mask and climbing 60 floors of stairs in an office building, up and down, while wearing a backpack. It was hard work. It was hard to breathe and there were many days when I didn't think I could finish. But I did. I also did step classes, indoor climbing and a practice ice climb.

After 6 months of training, I finally arrived in Lukla, Nepal.

4 things you need to do to secure a job abroad

0

travel traveler city river backpacker

We could all use a change of scenery once in a while, and travel is a nice way to switch things up.

But some people crave something slightly more permanent. Working abroad can provide you with the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in a different locale.

Karoli Hindricks, CEO of international tech marketplace Jobbatical, said working abroad is great for people who "feel the need to travel, step out of their comfort zones, and go on adventures."

But the process of securing a job abroad is quite a bit more complicated than simply finding work at home.

Here are some tips on how to approach traveling abroad to find work:

SEE ALSO: Facebook launched its own job search feature — here's how it works

DON'T MISS: 10 countries where you can earn more as an expat than you would at home

Do your research

What's the biggest pitfall people tend to fall into when attempting to work abroad?

For Hindricks, the answer is clear: "lack of research."

And research doesn't equate with skimming through a travel guide for the country you're planning to work in.

Hindricks recommended doing your homework on the country's immigration, tax, and healthcare policies before making any commitments.

And remember, it's easier to navigate the process in some countries than others.

"In Estonia, the application costs $190 and you can start working 24 hours after you've signed the work contract," Hindricks told Business Insider.

In addition to Estonia, she said Malaysia, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Austria, Poland, and Singapore all make it easy for skilled applicants to snag work permits.

On the other hand, Hindricks added that it's a bit of a slog to get through the immigration process in Greece, Australia, Sweden, and the United States.

Demonstrate the right kind of enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is almost always a plus when it comes to the job search. But if you're looking for a gig abroad, you've got to make sure you articulate that gusto in an appropriate way.

"When a person says during an interview that the only reason they want to join the team is that they've always wanted to live in, let's say Barcelona, well, that's a big turnoff for a hiring manager," Hindricks said. "The location — like in sunny Barcelona — is a nice perk, but don't forget that your team comes first."

Remember, business is business all over the world. Don't treat searching for a job in a different country like planning a fun vacation.

"Most people on our planet spend half of their waking hours building something that is important to them," Hindricks said. "It doesn't matter if they're in Malaysia, Spain, or Finland. Everyone wants their newest teammates to be as excited about the mission and working as hard to get there as they are."

She recommended channeling some of your excitement into your résumé, instead.

"Landing a job abroad is no different from landing a job at home," Hindricks said.

Put social media to good use

Consider leveraging social media to find opportunities abroad.

Scour LinkedIn to find connections who can give advice on international gigs — or perhaps even offer you one.

You can also punch in your location on Facebook's job-finding feature to hone in on job openings in your desired destination.

The best charities to donate to for victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

hurricane maria

Hurricane Maria — the third-strongest hurricane to ever hit the United States — has devastated Puerto Rico.

The storm made landfall last week, cutting communications, flooding neighborhoods, demolishing homes, and wiping out crop fields. At its peak, Maria was a Category 4 storm with 155-mph winds, according to the National Hurricane Center. At least 15 people have died because of the storm, and hundreds have been left homeless.

Puerto Ricans who live near a failing dam started evacuating last weekend, due to fears that it could break. An estimated 70,000 live in towns close to the dam, and according to local media, about 320 moved to safety. Most of the island (approximately 3.4 million people) is still without electricity and access to basic medical care, food, and water. Maria also knocked out 85% of phone and internet cables.

On Saturday, the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Cruz, told reporters that if Trump does not ramp up relief efforts, the situation could get even more dire.

"I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell," Cruz said. "So I am asking the members of the press, to send a mayday call all over the world. We are dying here ... And if it doesn't stop, and if we don't get the food and the water into people's hands, what we are going to see is something close to a genocide."

Trump responded by slamming Carmen Cruz' leadership.

"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job," Trump tweeted on Saturday.

You might be wondering how to help.

According to The Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI), which is part of the US Agency for International Development, donating money is almost almost the best way to give aid. Before sending material goods (like blankets, food, or toys), the CIDI recommends confirming with relief organizations there is a real need for them. If you want to assist in person, nonprofits both international and local are looking for volunteers.

Below you'll find a list of reputable Puerto Rico-based charity organizations to donate to, followed by larger nonprofits that operate on a national or global scale.

Note: It is not clear whether all these organizations will spend 100% of donations received on hurricane relief and associated expenses. But in past large-scale disasters, they have given high percentages of donations directly to victims, especially if there is a specific fund set up. To avoid scams, it's always good to research a group before donating by checking scores from independents groups like Charity Navigator and Charity Watch.

The United Funds of Puerto Rico

The Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico is working with the Red Cross and United Way on relief efforts, including an emergency hotline service. The group was started by Beatriz Rosselló, the first lady of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Ricans in Action

Several local charities and food banks are partnering to raise $10,000 through the Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief Fund.

On October 7, all money raised will be given to Puerto Ricans in Action, a Los Angeles-based Puerto Rican group. They will then distribute the funds among local nonprofits to pay for food, medical supplies, clothing, social services, and other resources.

ConPRmetidos

ConPRmetidos, a Puerto Rican organization, is hoping to raise $10 million for relief and recovery after Maria.

THEN AND NOW: How every 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' family member has changed in the 10 years since the first season

0

KUWTK THUMB

It's been 10 years since "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" first aired on E! in 2007. Whether you love or hate the show, the Kardashians yield an undeniable power in the world of pop culture.

From what they eat and how they dress to their controversial business ventures or what they do in their spare time, nearly every detail of the family member's lives has been documented either on their reality show, on one of their many related spin-offs, or on social media.

Ahead of the 14th season premiere of "KUWTK" this Sunday on E!, we've taken a look back to see how each family member has changed in the last decade.

Keep scrolling to see what each Kardashian-Jenner has been up to since we began keeping up with them.

In 2007, Kris Jenner worked with Ryan Seacrest to conceptualize a show about her family inspired by "The Osbournes."

Of course, that show was "KUWTK," which is about to enter its 14th season.

Since the start of "KUWTK," Kris has been an executive producer.

Now, the 61-year-old reality TV star is the textbook definition of a "momager," overseeing her children's professional affairs. She has made millions from the show and her own business ventures as well as her kids' earnings. In 2016 alone, she reportedly made $11.5 million.

Kris is also a grandmother to Mason Dash Disick, 7; Penelope Scotland Disick, 5; and Reign Aston Disick, 2; North West, 4; Saint West, 1; and 10-month-old, Dream Renée Kardashian. She has at least one more grandchild on the way, after Kim confirmed she is having a baby via a surrogate, though Kylie and Khloe are also reportedly expecting babies — so she could have another two more.

Before "KUWTK" started, Kim was known as Paris Hilton's friend.

She was 27 when the show first aired.

5 incredible vacation spots that are surprisingly cheap right now

0
0

21261046268_f1f2eaa991_kIt's a misconception that you have to shell out big bucks to go on a lavish vacation in paradise.

Some popular destinations have become relative steals for Americans in recent years and are only getting cheaper, from an idyllic resort island in Mexico to European-style vistas in Canada (without the transatlantic airfare).

We found the best values for a trip from the United States right now, based on currencies that are weakening against the dollar, as well as travel and hospitality considerations. If you want to make the most of your next getaway, book it to one of these spots.

SEE ALSO: 12 American beach towns that are dramatically cheaper to visit in September

1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Argentine peso dropped to a record low against the dollar this year, which is all the more reason to venture to one of the hottest spots in all of South America: Buenos Aires. The city combines Old World-style architecture with beaches and temperate weather in every season.

Admire buildings in the Plaza de Mayo, and then feast on steak and wine and improve your tango skills. And you also should make time for a quick trip to the stunning Iguazu Falls in the northeastern corner of Argentina, the largest waterfall system in the world.

2. Beijing, China

China's exchange rate against the dollar has fallen for three years in a row, making now an ideal time to visit the country's capital. There's literally thousands of years worth of history to take in while you stay in Beijing, from the Great Wall to the Tiananmen Square plaza and the ancient Forbidden City palace that's now a museum. And while other choices on this list may seem more pleasant than the bustling metropolis, you can be certain that a tour of Beijing won't be like anything else in the world.

3. Tokyo, Japan

Tickets to Japan don't come cheap (a round-trip flight from New York City costs about $1,000) but if you've been considering a journey there, you might want to go for it: The dollar has rallied against the yen in the past couple months as concerns over North Korea loom in the region.

Japan, a fierce ally of the U.S., is also extremely welcoming of American tourists, and if you know how to do Tokyo right, you can have a lot of fun without breaking the bank. Slurp down affordable, freshly made ramen, people-watch in the hip Harajuku district, and enter one of hundreds of tiny bars tucked away in alleyways in the famed Golden Gai area.

For many people, a regular exercise regimen is a crucial part of a healthy, balanced life.

Consistent aerobic exercise can even give your brain younger a boost, according to Business Insider.

But that doesn't mean all successful people are workout fanatics.

In fact, some say they avoid the gym — and traditional workouts, in general — at all costs. Some claim to hate physical activity and others simply don't need to exert themselves to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maybe one or two are simply "allergic to exercise."

Here are some successful people who don't exercise:

Plus, according to the New York Daily News, Jolie said she's naturally active enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle — and take on the odd action role: "I've always loved to run and jump around and be physical."

Actress and film producer Salma Hayek is too busy to work out

While she's a major fan of restorative yoga, Hayek doesn't work out.

"I don't have time to exercise. I am working. I've had some 20-hour days,"the actress told People.

She said she's learned how to hold her "body in a way where the muscles are activated all day long," allowing her to stay fit without any traditional exercise.

26 of the best business books you can read, from the CEOs and execs who can't put them down

Highly successful people typically work hard, practice the right habits every day and strive for self-improvement, with the latter often coming in the form of a book. If reading is something you're willing to do to sharpen yourself, take some suggestions from more than two dozen executives who have gleaned wisdom from these books.

1. The No Asshole Rule by Robert Sutton

"Stanford Professor Robert Sutton is an inspiration for me in building the right culture at Gfycat. Toxic people destroy innovation and have no place on any of my teams. Imagine how well-regarded Uber would be if it had followed that rule."

—Richard Rabbat, CEO of the user generated GIF platform Gfycat

2. The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly? By Seth Godin

"At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, I was juggling my rapidly growing candle business and a full-time job as an art director in the corporate fashion world. It came to the point where the arrangement was no longer sustainable and I had to choose one, but the security of my biweekly paychecks and health insurance was anchoring me to my cubicle. However, as I started reading The Icarus Deception, its messages got under my skin—the primary one being that with the opportunities provided by the internet, not everyone has to conform to the traditional paths that had been long established by industrialization. If we take full advantage of the technological resources available to us, we can create the work we want to do as artists and entrepreneurs. Midway through this book, I was inspired enough to gather the courage to quit my job to work on growing my business full-time."

—Tamara Mayne, founder of Brooklyn Candle Studio, small-batch, hand-poured candles made with natural waxes, cotton wicks, and botanical perfume oils

3. Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World by Gary Vaynerchuk

"[It's] the bible of content marketing and social media strategy. I give it to every new person on my team as required reading. Great for anyone interested in learning how to really connect with your audience authentically in the native language of each social platform. Not just for marketers. [It's] an important book for any entrepreneur or business leader looking to develop a fundamental understanding of what makes great digital content, the kind that will add value, compel sharing and—sometimes—catch fire."

Puerto Rico may not get power for another 6 months — here's a look at the hurricane's devastating effects

puerto rico gas shortage

Puerto Rico is still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria that left 3.5 million people without power.

Hurricane Irma, which hit Puerto Rico earlier this month, left one million Puerto Ricans without power. The island was still recovering from the storm's aftermath when Hurricane Maria hit, crippling the entire island's electrical infrastructure.

Here's what you need to know:

Puerto Rico's electrical infrastructure was in need of repairs and upgrades before the hurricanes hit. PREPA, the island's electric company, hasn't had the funds to modernize the grid. Puerto Rico also lacks the number of workers required to make the repairs.

That means rebuilding the island's electrical infrastructure will be an even longer process. San Juan Mayor Carmen Cruz says it could take up to 6 months to revive the electric grid.

Satellite night images show the extent of the damage. Hurricane Maria knocked out 80% of the island's transmission lines, leaving most of the island in darkness.

'All the goodies but none of the pain' — here's what Wall Street is saying about Trump's tax plan

President Donald Trump's long-awaited tax plan was released to much fanfare on Wednesday, and reactions from Wall Street are already rolling in.

The consensus is that the plan had some good elements but was a little light on details, which will have to be addressed as tax-writing committees craft actual legislation. Business Insider's Bob Bryan breaks down the gaps that need to be filled here.

From an economic perspective, Wall Street was lukewarm on the possibility that Trump's tax proposals — in their current form — would drive any sort of expansion. Several firms left their outlooks unchanged, citing a lack of actionable specifics.

If the tax plan gave Wall Street anything to work with immediately, it comes on the markets front, where the so-called Trump trade was alive and well Wednesday. Both highly taxed US companies and multinational corporations with large overseas cash holdings rallied as traders bought assets expected to benefit most from a change in tax policy. Here's a more detailed look at trade recommendations.

Without further ado, here's a roundup of Wall Street commentary on the tax plan:

Bank of America Merrill Lynch

BAML didn't see anything in the tax plan drastic enough to change its economic outlook. Here are some select comments from the firm expanding on that:

• The report has "a few more details, but far from comprehensive," containing "all the goodies but none of the pain."

• "While the Republican leadership made further progress on a tax bill, we continue to believe that a comprehensive tax legislation bill faces long odds."

• "The current blueprint does not lay out how it will pay for the tax cuts."

• "Any new taxes, repeal of deductions and loopholes, or a significant increase in the budget deficit could face stiff opposition in Congress."

• "A modest deficit-increasing tax cut is possible, but our baseline remains that Congress is unlikely to get significant tax legislation passed by next year, leaving our economic outlook unchanged for 2018."

Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley expressed a similarly cautious tone, though it did say the tax plan was a step in the right direction. It said:

• "A necessary, positive step, as details (smaller corporate rate cut, interest deduction limits, bonus depreciation) moved closer to our base case of what's politically & legislatively achievable."

• "Plan details appear to align with our base case for tax reform: slow progress toward 2018 passage, meaningful execution risk, and a moderation of rate cuts and deficit expansion relative to prior White House proposals."

• "Difficult debates linger, suggesting provisions will be further moderated & execution risks remain."

On the corporate-tax-rate cut: "Given the procedural constraints for achieving a permanent corporate tax rate reduction, and the unattractiveness of a temporary corporate rate cut, our base case is that legislation will ultimately settle closer to a 25% rate given the political challenges of embracing the yet unidentified pay fors required to achieve 20%."

On bipartisan cooperation: "Cutting the top individual tax rate and eliminating the estate tax make it very unlikely that Democrats would support the plan. Barring any significant changes, we think the idea of bipartisan tax reform that garners enough Democratic votes to clear the filibuster hurdle can be put to rest."

Nomura

Nomura expressed measured confidence around the ability of at least part of the tax plan to go into effect — but it does have some worries about one specific area. It said:

• "Today's announcement does not change our overall assessment that. Congress will likely pass tax cuts for individuals in early 2018."

• "We may also get a modest reduction in corporate taxes. However, given the complexity of the corporate tax code, concerns over the deficit, and the ability of special interests to sway the few Republican senators needed to thwart any plan, we remain pessimistic about the likelihood of significant corporate tax reform."

• On impact of government's fiscal position: "One reason for our pessimistic view of significant tax cuts is that the fiscal outlook today is considerably worse than in times past when taxes were cut."

Before Dr. Seuss was famous he drew these sad, racist ads ... and then totally changed his mind

Dr. Seuss

A school librarian in Boston rejected a gift of Dr. Seuss books from First Lady Melania Trump in part because the late author's illustrations are "steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes."

Most people know Seuss books as harmless, imaginative fun for kids. But Seuss's early work did have a darker, racist side — before he eventually changed his views and abandoned his prejudices.

Dr. Seuss' political leanings are well known — the writer was a liberal Democrat who opposed fascism in the 1940s and President Nixon in the 1970s. The movie of his book "The Lorax" is a fairly unsubtle pro-environment allegory.

Less well celebrated are Theodor Seuss Geisel's early advertising and political cartoons from the 1920s through the 1940s, which had a racist streak.

In the ads (from the collection of the library of the University of California at San Diego), black people are presented as savages, living in the tropics, dressed in grass skirts. Arabs are portrayed as camel-riding nomads or sultans.

The images reveal that one of America's most original artist-authors had the same views of nonwhites as many of his contemporaries.

More optimistically, Seuss later changed his mind and began drawing cartoons that criticised people with prejudiced ideas. Here's a look at that journey, as seen in images that never featured in his children's books.

Warning: Readers may find the following images offensive or upsetting.

Seuss inveighed against the Japanese in his political cartoons during World War II; he drew them bucktoothed with squinty eyes.

This was an ad for Flit, a brand of insect repellent.

Many of these drawings are from the collection of the Springfield Library and Museums Association.
