The story of how Steve Jobs saved Apple from disaster and led it to rule the world, in 39 photos (AAPL)

Steve Jobs

October 5th marks the 6-year anniversary of the passing of Steve Jobs, the visionary Apple co-founder. So let's take a moment to reflect on his life and legacy.

Nowadays, Apple is the most valuable company in the world, thanks in huge part to the Jobs' vision.

But if you only saw the movie, you got less than half of the story.

Once upon a time, Apple was a disaster, chewing through CEOs and delivering one bad quarter of financial results after another.

In 1996, knowing he had to do something dramatic, Apple's CEO at the time Gil Amelio negotiated a deal to buy NeXT, the computer company owned by an exiled Jobs, in hopes that he would bring some much-needed direction to the company.

Instead, Jobs manipulated the board into getting Amelio fired and decided that if Apple were to be saved, he would be the one to do it — even if it meant getting help from the company's rivals at Microsoft.

Here's what happened next.

SEE ALSO: 32 photos of Apple's early days before it ruled the world

In late 1996, Apple announced plans to bring cofounder Steve Jobs back into the fold 11 years after he left the company by acquiring his startup NeXT for $429 million — just in time for Jobs to join then-Apple CEO Gil Amelio on stage at January 1997's Macworld Expo, a convention for Mac enthusiasts, as a keynote speaker.

Steve Jobs' NeXT found its niche selling graphically intensive PCs with cutting-edge screens to universities and banks. Apple hoped that Jobs would revitalize the Mac maker, whose stock had hit a 12-year low under Amelio's leadership and experienced crippling losses.

On July 4, 1997, Jobs persuaded Apple's board to oust Amelio and make Jobs the interim, and then permanent, CEO. In August 1997, Jobs took the stage at another Macworld Expo to announce that Apple had taken a $150 million investment from its long-time rivals at Microsoft. "We need all the help we can get," Jobs said, to boos from the audience.

Photos show the shocking differences between life in North and South Korea

north korea south korea comparison

After Jacob Laukaitis visited North Korea, he wanted to see how the other half lives.

The entrepreneur and travel blogger made it to South Korea one year after that eye-opening trip to the "Hermit Kingdom." He was shocked by how differently citizens of North and South Korea lead their lives.

"Why were the people in the North not allowed to freely interact and share their thoughts with me, while the people in the South could do whatever the heck they wanted?" he asks in a video he made comparing the two countries. "Seeing these differences firsthand broke my heart. Why has life become so different for the Korean people in just a few generations?"

The contrast was particularly poignant as Laukaitis visited North Korea at the same age and around the same time as as Otto Warmbier. Warmbier, an American college student who was arrested after being accused of allegedly stealing a propaganda poster from his hotel, died a week after North Korean authorities returned him to the US in a coma.

Here are photos from Laukaitis' travels that show just how drastic the differences between North and South Korea are.

He was shocked and heartbroken by the differences between the two countries.

The Silicon Valley photographer who's worked with the tech world's most powerful people just published his most stunning series yet

ahrendts_angela_abosch_2000_LRKevin Abosch, a visual artist who has photographed hundreds of people who work in the tech world, has just unveiled his latest series, and it highlights the highest-ranking women in tech.

From Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg to Apple's Angela Ahrendts, powerful women from 25 different countries are featured in Abosch's series. He came up with the idea after he saw data from CoderDojo, a company that teaches children how to code.

"[I was] looking at the data and you had all these kids — it was 50/50 boys and girls — until age 11. And then, 99% of the girls drop off. It was so freaky, it was shocking," he told Business Insider. "I never looked at my portraits of women in technology the same way after that."

The underrepresentation of women in tech is an issue that many companies — including Uber, Facebook, Apple, and Google — have tried to address in recent years.

Below, see 10 portraits from the series.

The series of work is currently on display at the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center in San Francisco. Pictured here is Julia Hartz, founder and CEO of Eventbrite.

"You can't be what you can't see," Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, said in a statement about Absoch's show. "This exhibit is important for girls and young women so they know Computer Science and STEM is for them. It's exciting to be a part of this effort to share images that will hopefully inspire others to get involved in our industry and bring more gender equality to tech."

Not all of the women included in the series work at tech companies. Joanna Coles, for example, is the chief content officer at Hearst. "A lot of people are behind the scenes of tech. Coles from Hearst, her job is using technology now to drive their business. Everything is digital now, and she's in charge of that," Abosch said.

How life would change for Meghan Markle if she married Prince Harry

$

Meghan Markle Prince harry

Actor Meghan Markle's life has undoubtedly changed since she began dating Prince Harry last year, but if reports are true that the pair is as good as engaged, her life is about to change in an even bigger way.

We've rounded up all of the major ways Markle's life will be altered if we finally get another royal wedding.

She may have to give up her career.

Markle is an accomplished actor, philanthropist, blogger, and fashion designer. And although the Crown loves ambitious partners for royals, wives of royals are often "encouraged" to give that up and focus on royal pursuits once they marry into the family.

Many have noted that Markle shut down her blog, "The Tig," in the past few months and has started using her platform to speak about charities she is passionate about — a career more in line with what she'd be encouraged to do as a royal

There's nothing explicitly saying she'd have to give up on acting, but Grace Kelly notably abandoned her acting career when she became Princess of Monaco

She can't be active in politics.

Though Markle is outspoken about social issues and racial issues, she would not be able to be an active participant in politics should she marry Harry.

Royals are apparently forbidden from discussing specific political views publicly and they don't vote. Members of the royal family are also prevented from running for office. So, alas, Meghan won't be making her presidential run anytime soon.

She can never play Monopoly at home.

This is an odd, but true fact. The royal family is expressly forbidden from playing the board game "Monopoly" with each other because the games apparently got "too vicious."

Hopefully Harry tipped her off to this before she brings the game as a fun activity over the holidays.

RISING STARS: Meet 16 investment bankers age 35 and under doing huge deals

bigraphics thumb2

Climbing Wall Street's ranks as a dealmaker is no easy feat.

Yes, you need math chops and spreadsheet-modeling wizardry. You also need to tolerate, if not relish, working long hours to close the job. Second place is a set of steak knives, remember.

But that alone won't get you far.

The business is all about building relationships and navigating personalities — those of your clients and of your firm. These skills are more nebulous and can take many years to cultivate. That's why it's such an impressive feat to be sourcing and executing serious investment-banking transactions in your early 30s.

We've rounded up some of the rising rainmakers from firms across Wall Street, culled from more than 200 nominations by peers, clients, and financial institutions themselves. Each has made outsized contributions and distinguished themselves at an early age, earning accolades from superiors and clients alike.

Titles aren't everything — some firms have more layers of management than others — but these are your standouts and managing directors of tomorrow. Or, in some cases, today.

Read on for 16 of the most impressive rising stars in Wall Street investment banking, ordered by age.

Glenn Silverstein, 30, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Glenn Silverstein is a top performer in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s equity capital markets unit, sourcing 15 deals this year across the healthcare sector that pulled in more than $27.5 million in fees for the firm.

The George Washington University grad joined BAML in 2013 after several years at RBS. Silverstein, a vice president, focuses on leading originations for high-growth healthcare companies to fund product development and commercialization. He’s part of a healthcare team that has sourced equity for biotech firms like: Bluebird Bio ($400 million follow-on) — a cancer immunotherapy company that rivals Kite Pharma — and gene therapy firms Audentes (a $75 million IPO) and Regenx (a $139 million IPO).

Moritz Baier, 31, Goldman Sachs

While a teenager in Germany, Moritz Baier was earning thousands of euros dominating millions of competitors in the popular computer game "Diablo II" (yes, he skipped classes; no, the parents of the first-generation high-school graduate didn’t mind). He used some of his winnings to pay for business school at Stanford, and today he’s a senior associate in Goldman Sachs' burgeoning technology investment-banking business, where he helped build and co-leads the digital gaming and e-sports practice.

Along the way, Baier has worked for and advised some of the world’s most influential people. At Stanford, he was a teaching assistant for Condoleeza Rice. In nearly seven years at IBM (18 countries and five continents), he advised CEO Ginni Rometty and other top executives. Since joining Goldman in 2015, he’s advised Elon Musk and Michael Dell — including on the largest tech buyout of all time: Dell’s $67 billion acquisition of IT titan EMC. All told, Baier has done more than 20 transactions worth north of $100 billion in two years.

Christine Ferris, 31, JPMorgan Chase

Christine Ferris is the global cohead of the CLO primary business at JPMorgan Chase, where as executive director she oversees a team of 15 that has completed more than 50 transactions this year totaling $24.2 billion of capital raised to purchase leveraged loans.

Ferris joined the country’s largest bank in 2007 after graduating from Yale with a degree in psychology. She ascended the ranks at JPMorgan in sales and trading, initially focusing on structured credit sales. She was named global head of CLO syndicate in 2013 and promoted to cohead of the primary business in 2016.

This little-known Silicon Valley neighborhood is suddenly one of the hottest housing markets in America — take a look

serra the dalles sunnyvale neighborhood homes 9676

Lots of people working in Silicon Valley can't afford to buy a home there.

As a housing shortage in the San Francisco Bay Area continues to drive prices sky-high, some homebuyers are turning their attention to a micro-neighborhood called Serra, located between the headquarters of Google and Apple. It's also known by its main drag, The Dalles.

This southwest corner of the town of Sunnyvale offers relatively affordable houses, proximity to major tech companies, and a small-town suburban feel. Still, Serra has flown under the radar, in part because few people know it exists. Google Maps doesn't even recognize the name.

Earlier this year, real-estate site Redfin named Serra the third hottest neighborhood of 2017The site based the ranking on increases in internet traffic to listings in specific neighborhoods. Serra homes typically sell in under two weeks at 106% of the listing price.

Here's what life is like in the neighborhood.

SEE ALSO: Inside the most expensive zip code in Silicon Valley, where tech moguls like Eric Schmidt and Paul Allen have their mansions

I had my doubts about Serra, also known as "The Dalles," according to Redfin, before setting out for the new most desirable neighborhood in Sunnyvale. Did it really exist?

Based on my preliminary Google searches, Serra looked like a realtor's attempt to rebrand an existing neighborhood with a pleasant-sounding moniker in order to lure prospective buyers — likeNew York's made-up SoHa. None of my colleagues in San Francisco had ever heard of it.

Google Maps confirmed my suspicion. Searches for Serra and The Dalles turned up only Serra Park, the neighborhood park, and The Dalles, the street that bisects the area.

A map on Redfin provided some clarity. Serra spans about two square miles.

23 teachers share the weirdest thing they've ever experienced on the job

mr clarke and kids in gym stranger things

Ask just about any educator and they'll tell you: There are many joys that come with teaching.

From witnessing students finally understand something they were struggling with, to seeing how unique every child is, teachers get to share in some pretty special moments.

Dig a little deeper, and these teachers will also tell you that not all "special moments" are conventional — inevitably, there are some oddities that come with molding the future generation.

We asked teachers everywhere to share some of the stranger things they've experienced on the job, and, well, we were overwhelmed by all the weirdness. As one teacher said, "Every day something weird happens. Your students will say and do the weirdest things, and you will laugh every day."

Here are some of the most interesting (and anonymous) things teachers said they've encountered.

SEE ALSO: 19 things teachers say parents should do at home to help their kids succeed

The darndest things

"A student (and then later a teacher) suggested that I hurt the teacher I had been replacing so that I could stay."

"Students notice absolutely everything. I had a student once who remembered every bag I own (like 10 of them) and most of my outfits. At the end of the year she told me all of her favorite one of my looks."

"I was once asked what my real job was."

"I had a student who would call me 'mom.' He lived with his mother and loved her dearly, but when he got to school he would call me 'mom' as well."

Fellow teachers and administration acting up

"There are some teachers who are mean and don't enjoy children but somehow still teach and have a job."

"My first year of teaching showed me how much a crazy, incompetent administration can ruin a school. After a new principal came in, every teacher left, except for three who remained — three teachers out of dozens for an entire high school! The principal had three different investigations running against her for harassment, forging documents, and physically abusing students, and nothing happened to her! Crazy."

"Another teacher stole from me."

"I've seen administration, who get paid tens of thousands more than the highest paid teachers, acting inappropriately and unprofessionally — and then those are the people who evaluate us."

Love, sex, and loneliness

"There have been multiple marriages from within my department."

"I once saw performance art depicting the phallic symbolism of 'Moby-Dick.'"

"I found a sex toy in a two-year-old's backpack. Holy awkward phone conversation!"

"A student brought me in a list of dating websites for Valentine's Day."

"I have dealt with weird issues with kids I never thought I would, like the time a kid asked me to deliver a note to their friend that contained information about the friend's girlfriend cheating on them. You just never know when you work with teenagers."

Stars Hollow jump-started the careers of a number of actors, including Alexis Bledel and Melissa McCarthy.

But while the "Gilmore Girls" cast was full of many new faces, it was also graced by veterans. Much of the cast returned for the revival "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life."

Here's a look back at what the cast looked like when they first starred on the hit show and what they've been up to since the series premiered in 2000:

Alexis Bledel made her TV (and lead role) debut as Rory Gilmore.

She made her feature film debut in 2002 with "Tuck Everlasting" and starred in the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" movies. She also had a small role on "Mad Men." She recently won an Emmy for her role on "The Handmaid's Tale."

Lauren Graham starred in a few short-lived sitcoms before landing her role as Rory's mom, Lorelai. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role.

NFL QB POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 starting QBs stand heading into Week 5

$

Drew Brees

Using a loose formula, we ranked all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks.

The formula is based on two different advanced statistics: Football Outsiders' DYAR metric and ESPN's total QBR metric. We also incorporated other factors, including season-long outlook, game management, and job security.

This season has featured a number of surprises in just a few short weeks, but four familiar names are positioned at the top of these rankings. Below, check out where all 32 starting quarterbacks stand heading into Week 5.

32. Matt Cassel, Tennessee Titans

Ranking after Week 2: N/A (replacing Marcus Mariota, No. 12)

Record as starter: N/A

DYAR rank: N/A

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: The Titans are still hoping that the injured Mariota will be ready for this weekend, but if not, it looks like Cassel will be the one under center. Brandon Weeden, an insurance signing who joined the team earlier this week, is another option.

31. DeShone Kizer, Cleveland Browns

Ranking after Week 2: 30

Record as starter: 0-4

DYAR rank: 32

QBR rank: 32

One thing to know: You have to give the Browns credit for rolling with their rookie signal caller and hoping for the best, but the results just haven't been there. Kizer leads the league with eight interceptions, and his completion percentage has dipped to 51.4.

30. EJ Manuel, Oakland Raiders

Ranking after Week 2: N/A (replacing Derek Carr, No. 2)

Record as starter: N/A

DYAR rank: N/A

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: Derek Carr's back injury means that Manuel will get his first start of the season this week. The former Bill completed nearly two-thirds of his passes on Sunday, but he also threw an interception.

With fall weather upon us and winter right around the corner, a warm jacket is an absolute necessity.

While parkas and down-filled coats do a great job at keeping you warm, they don't always pair well with formal attire.

If you're looking for a jacket that will work with your shirt and tie on work days, and a simple sweater on casual ones, a peacoat is the answer.

The peacoat's design originated as a military-issued coat to keep sailors warm at sea, but has evolved into a stylish choice worn by many people. Characterized by its warm wool material and high collar, it's the ideal pick for late fall and early winter.

Traditionally available in a dark navy blue, you can now find peacoats in black, grey, brown, and tan. Fashion companies, including Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole, LL.Bean, and J.Crew all offer stylish options. Look your best and stay warm this fall and winter with a new peacoat.

NFL WEEK 5: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

Browns Wk 5

Another week, another miracle cover saving our picks from falling apart.

This time it was the Kansas City Chiefs saving bettors wallets in the final seconds, with Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston recovering a fumble and taking it to the end zone on the final play of the game to give the Chiefs a backdoor cover that they will never forget.

It's a good reminder that gambling is not for the faint of heart.

This week, we'll hope to land on the right side of all of the nail-biting decisions yet again. There are a few tricky lines out there that seem to be tempting bettors into their comfort like a Siren's song, but do not be fooled — if things look too good to be true, they probably are.

We're coming off our second straight week of 7-9, and while we're still up on the season, now would be a good time to get back to our winning ways and make some cash. Hopefully the Browns hear my plea.

All lines come courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

LAST WEEK: 7-9
OVERALL: 35-28

New England Patriots (-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Buccaneers +5

The logic: This one is a nightmare when it comes to picking a side. On one hand you have the Buccaneers as a home underdog going against a Patriots team that appears to have one of the worst defenses in the country. On the other, you have Bill Belichick and Tom Brady coming off a loss, which always seems like a sure bet. I'm taking the Buccos here because they have cooler Color Rush jerseys, but I highly recommend just betting the over and saving your big money for later on in the week.

New York Jets (PK) at Cleveland Browns (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Browns PK

The logic: If you bet on the Jets this game you are betting on the Jets to win three games in a row, and that just seems like an absurd thing to bet on. Also, the Jets can't afford to win this game and put themselves a full three games behind the Browns in the race for the first overall pick at next year's draft. DeShone Kizer gets the first win of his career and the Dawg Pound goes home happy.

Buffalo Bills (+3) at Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bengals -3

The logic: This line is insane right? The Bills have beaten two of the best teams in football the past two weeks, and the Bengals just got their first win of the year against the Browns. The Bengals still haven't scored a touchdown at home this year! So I'm backing Cincinnati, because this line makes no sense, and if the line makes no sense, Vegas knows something I don't.

Tillerson says he and Trump act as 'one team' — Here are 8 big issues on which they totally disagree

In a press conference on Wednesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that he and President Trump are "one team with one with mission."

But the two have rarely seen eye to eye, and in many cases their disagreements have become public through leaked private conversations, contradictory talking points, and unfiltered tweets by the president himself.

In many cases, this has led to deep divisions between Trump and Tillerson on major domestic and international policy issues and prevented them from presenting a unified front in diplomatic circles. Here are eight of the biggest and most important issues that they diverge on:

SEE ALSO: When asked if the president represents American values, Rex Tillerson says Trump 'speaks for himself'

America's approach to North Korea

In perhaps the most direct public dispute between the two leaders, Trump disavowed Tillerson's diplomatic approach toward North Korea on Twitter.

One day after Tillerson stated that he was trying to open the door for talks with North Korea while on a trip to China, Trump undermined his efforts, tweeting, "I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man.”

Trump and Tillerson have repeatedly clashed over the proper way to handle North Korea's aggressive stance toward the United States, with Trump favoring military action and Tillerson hoping to use back channels to reach a consensus with the bellicose country.

Given that North Korea now has both the capability to fire long-range missiles at the US and has access to nuclear weapons, the stakes for determining the most prudent strategy toward the country are startlingly high.

The US position on the Qatar crisis

In June, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Bahrain cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged funding of terrorism, magnifying fears of even greater political instability in the Middle East.

Tillerson stated that he hoped the Middle Eastern countries could "sit down together and address these differences," adding that the diplomatic show of force would not have "any significant impact, if any impact at all" on the "fight against terrorism in the region or globally."

Trump, however, offered his own take.

"During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology," he tweeted. "Leaders pointed to Qatar - look!"

Trump later announced on Twitter that he and Tillerson had come together to "call on Qatar to end its funding" of terrorism, even though such a consensus had never been reached. According to one of Tillerson's associates, the secretary of state was "absolutely enraged that the White House and State Department weren't on the same page."

The Iran nuclear deal

As a presidential candidate, Trump repeatedly promised to leave the Iran nuclear deal if elected.

Tillerson, however, has taken a more nuanced approach to the agreement, and has acknowledged that he and the president do not see eye-to-eye on the issue.

"He and I have differences of views on things like JCPOA, and how we should use it," Tillerson stated, using the acronym for the official name of the Iran deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The secretary of state was thus taken aback when he heard that Trump had made a decision regarding the deal, as the two were supposed to weigh their options in person.

"I have decided," Trump told reporters on September 20. "I'll let you know."

Forever 21 recently opened its first stand-alone beauty store, Riley Rose

Luckily for me, its flagship store is located in Glendale Galleria (right in my hometown), so I got to experience the beauty fantasyland firsthand.

On my first visit, I spent over two hours in the store looking at beauty products. And, as someone who spends a lot of money on makeup, I was excited to see how affordable some of the items were, with prices ranging from $1.80 to $189.

The new store sells everything from makeup and hair care products to skin care and home goods. Riley Rose is launching its website this November, and plans to open in another 12 locations across the US before the end of the year.

Before you can visit for yourself, here’s what you’ll find inside.

I stepped in and felt like I had walked into a beauty dreamland. It was the first time I didn’t feel intimidated walking into a makeup store.

The space is brightly lit with neon signs on the walls and vanity mirrors where you can test some of the products.

With a section dedicated to mask treatments, there are so many face masks to choose from.

This gold premium night care mask made me feel like royalty. I couldn't wait to get home to try it out.

The shop carries a variety of glitter brands and colors made for your face and body.

If you're a fan of fun makeup, this is a place that will definitely satisfy your glitter addition. And what better way to put on glitter than with a giant syringe?
