bill gates reddit AMA 2014Reddit can be an incredibly fun tool, if you know how to use it.

The so-called "front page of the internet" might look a bit drab, as its design hasn’t changed much since its 2005 debut. But if you only think of the site as a text-based forum for discussion, you're missing out on some of its best aspects.

If you follow the right "subreddits"— areas of interest created and moderated by other Reddit users — you’ll always have plenty of interesting links, photos, videos, and GIFs to gawk at and share.

There are literally millions of subreddits out there, but here are the 13 best:

7 times Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct has been referenced in plain sight — and we didn't even realize it

harvey weinstein

Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein has been accused of multiple counts of sexual harassment, assault, and rape by numerous women.

Explosive reports from the New York Times, The New Yorker, and various first-hand accounts have detailed Weinstein's alleged sexual harassment, misconduct, and assault over three decades.

But Weinstein's reputation and behavior have been hinted at for years, and was an "open secret" in Hollywood.

From dark jokes on TV shows, serious scenes inspired by the experiences and interview mentions, here are seven times his alleged behavior was mentioned over the years.

If you are a victim of sexual assault, you can visit RAINN or call its hotline at 1-800-656-4673 to receive confidential support from a trained staff member.

Gwyneth Paltrow spoke with David Letterman about Weinstein's 'coercive' methods in 1998.

In a November 1998 interview with host David Letterman, the actress referred to Weinstein as a "coercer."

While promoting "Shakespeare in Love," a Weinstein-produced film for which she won an Oscar, Paltrow was asked about her Thanksgiving plans. She remarked that she would normally have avoided traveling on Thanksgiving, but told Letterman that she was "here for you."

Letterman jokingly responded, "Are you here of your own free will? Has someone coerced you into being here?"

And without skipping a beat, Paltrow responded, "Do you count Harvey Weinstein as a coercer?"

As their conversation continued, Paltrow added, "I do all my movies for Harvey Weinstein, that’s Miramax...and I'm lucky to do them there, but he will coerce you to do a thing or two."

When Letterman asked what she got in exchange, she said, "Nothing."

Paltrow is one of a number of women who have alleged that Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them.

She told the New York Times that she had a meeting with Weinstein when she was 22, during which he touched and suggested they go to the bedroom to massage each other.

"I was a kid, I was signed up," she said. "I was petrified."

Seth McFarlane's joked about Weinstein's reputation while announcing Oscar nominees in 2013.

While announcing the nominees for best supporting actress in 2013, the "Family Guy" creator made a joke about Weinstein's reputation.

"Congratulations," he said. "You five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein."

After the clip resurfaced this week, MacFarlane shared a statement on Twitter explaining why he didn't come forward at the time, even though the quip was completely intentional.

The statement read:

"In 2011, my friend and colleague Jessica Barth, with whom I worked on the 'Ted' films, confided in me regarding her encounter with Harvey Weinstein and his attempted advances. She has since courageously come forward to speak out. It was with this account in mind that, when I hosted the Oscars in 2013, I couldn't resist the opportunity to take a hard swing in his direction. Make no mistake, this came from a place of loathing and anger. There is nothing more abhorrent and indefensible than abuse of power such as this. I respect and applaud my friend Jessica and those sharing their stories for their decision to come forward, and for being champions of the truth."

Actress Jessica Barth came to McFarlane's defense for supporting her decision to keep quiet after the alleged incident.

"To the people slamming Seth for not 'doing' anything, please STOP!" she wrote on Twitter. "He stood by me and respected my wishes that he not retaliate in any way."

Watch the clip here.

Jenna referenced Harvey Weinstein on two separate episodes of "30 Rock."

In a clip from season six, episode 14, Jane Krakowski's character Jenna mentions that she turned Weinstein down on multiple occasions when her colleague Tracy Jordan warns her not to mess with Weird Al Yankovic.

"I'm not afraid of anyone in show business," she says. "I turned down intercourse with Harvey Weinstein on no less than three occasions out of five."

On season seven, episode 10 she cracks another joke when speaking with Kenneth the page about exes.

"Look, I get it," she says. "I know how former lovers can have a hold over you long after they’re gone. In some ways, I'm still pinned under a passed-out Harvey Weinstein, and it's Thanksgiving."

Of course, no one really orders a venti, double-whip caramel mocha Frappuccino (number 14 on this list!) and thinks they're getting something healthy.

Nevertheless, INSIDER has rounded up the 20 Starbucks menu items — both food and drink — that you should never order, especially if you're watching your diet. Humanity is increasingly moving into cities, but the Earth isn't getting any bigger.

That means our apartments are getting smaller, and our living arrangements denser.

Some people get roommates to avoid living in such small spaces. Others, due to poverty or personal obligations, have no choice but to accept their crowded circumstances.

We don't know how they do it, but somehow they make it work.

The Insider Pick:

  • When you travel, you need a practical wallet that can hold your passport, boarding pass, and all your credit cards and cash. The Bellroy Travel Wallet fits the bill with its super smart design that holds everything easily without adding bulk.

I never used to be a fan of passport holders and cases. Passports are thin, light, and just the right size to slip into a jeans pocket, or maybe the small front pocket or quick-access compartment of a carry-on backpack.

Then my passport started to get battered, and I took a few international flights where I couldn’t use mobile boarding passes and had to carry paper ones. I remembered what a pain it can be to keep track of your passport, boarding pass, and landing cards, plus other notes and documents you might need when you’re throwing everything loose into a backpack pocket.

I decided to look into travel wallets and passport covers. My thinking was that it would be easier to streamline everything if I could keep all the travel documents for a given flight in one holder, plus I’d be able to protect my passport. I knew that money belts and travel wallets that go around the neck are popular, but I had no interest in one of those. I wanted a sleek clean wallet.

I spent some time researching different options, trying a handful of different ones, and I’m happy to say that I found my favorite and new go-to: the Bellroy Travel Wallet. I've also found a number of other great travel wallet options if Bellroy's wares aren't for you. Read on to see which of put picks is the best for your travel wallet needs.

Although the Bellroy Travel Wallet is the best one I've used, there are other great options out there. If you decide it isn’t for you, I also recommend looking at the Tumi Alpha Passport Case, the Mr. Lentz Slim Passport Wallet, the Fjallraven Passport Wallet, and the Zero Grid Travel Wallet and Passport Holder in the slides below.

The best travel wallet overall

Why you'll love it: The Bellroy Travel Wallet keeps your passport, boarding passes, landing cards, and more in a compact, organized package.

If you’re a regular reader of Insider Picks Guides, chances are you’re already familiar with Bellroy — after all, the company makes our favorite wallets. The young Australian brand has a smart, minimalist and functional design philosophy. It also uses ethically-sourced materials and has a great manufacturing process to produce high-quality gear.

What I love about Bellroy’s travel wallet is that it holds everything — It has room for all of the travel documents you might need over the course of a multi-stop international trip, plus cash, credit cards, a SIM card, and even a pen.

At first glance, the wallet looks like an oversized bifold, opening just like an everyday wallet. One side has room for your passport, with a dedicated pocket that takes up that whole side. The other side has credit card slots — either two or four, depending on which edition of the wallet you choose — positioned vertically so you just drop the cards in. The wallet also has an open top pocket like a traditional bill compartment, but it’s divided into two sections.

There are a few more “hidden” card slots and a sim card holder within the inner cash compartment, as well as my favorite feature of this wallet: a tiny pen, which is kept tucked away right in the middle so that you can fill out landing cards and jot any quick notes you need.

The wallet is big enough to hold just about any currency, and I like to keep a little bit in one of the sections of the large cash/document pocket. The other section is great for holding boarding passes, custom cards and any other travel documents you might need to have handy. I prefer putting these in the outermost section so that they don’t crease when folded. I use the inside part for cash — You can put cash in both sections, using the divider to keep different currencies separated.

In theory, Bellroy intends the travel wallet to be your everyday wallet on the road, something you can carry with your cards, cash, passport and everything else you need for a day of exploring.

I think it’s a little big for that. I can certainly fit in in a back pocket or jacket when I’m in the airport, but it’s big enough that I would be worried about theft walking around a city with it. It’s great to keep everything handy in the airport and during transit, but once I reach my destination, I’d probably carry my daily cash, credit cards and ID in a regular wallet and leave the travel wallet behind in a hotel safe.

The wallet is available in a few different colors, plus, there's a RFID-blocking version and a new “designer’s edition.” The designer’s edition is meant for the luxury market and has a softer leather with a few design tweaks. It also only has two credit card slots on the main part of the wallet, rather than four. Other than that, it’s basically the same product as the original. Whether you choose the regular or the designer’s edition, you can’t go wrong.

Pros: Keeps everything you need handy while traveling, easy to navigate, great organization, includes a pen, small enough to carry in a pocket in the airport

Cons: Too big to use as a daily wallet during trips

The best travel wallet with RFID blocking

Why you'll love it: The Tumi Alpha Passport Case is stylish, plus it keeps your passport and cards safe — in more ways than one.

Did you know that passports, Global Entry cards, and some credit cards include a small RFID, or radio frequency identification chip, used to help prevent fraud or make it easier to pay for things? A small electronic chip is embedded in the card or document and emits a certain radio signal, which can be interpreted when the chip is near a reader. In the case of a passport, this radio signal verifies all the information on your photo page.

While RFID technology adds to security and convenience, the major downside is that anyone can use a portable scanner and steal information just by walking next to someone with a RFID-equipped passport or credit card. There’s some debate about how real of a threat this is, as most credit cards don’t include these chips anymore and the information a thief can get by “skimming” a passport is fairly innocuous. However, if you want to reduce the risk of identity theft as much as possible, you may want to keep your passport and credit cards in a RFID-blocking wallet.

The Tumi Alpha Passport Case is one of the best RFID-blocking wallets out there. It can be hard to strike a balance between blocking RFID signals and keeping the wallet slim and stylish, and the Tumi Alpha does it well. The wallet is made from Tumi’s signature woven ballistic nylon, with a leather interior and trim. The RFID-blocking material is woven in with the rest of the fabric so that it’s virtually unnoticeable. The wallet is also extremely lightweight.

The wallet is a regular bifold, though because it’s taller than it is wide it opens along the longer edge, like a book. The passport sleeve is on the left side when the wallet is open and sits upright. There’s an ID window right under that, perfect for a driver’s license. The right side of the wallet has eight credit card slots. There’s also an extra sleeve between the credit card slots, which can hold folded travel documents. The note sleeve is at the top of the wallet and is fairly deep.

The wallet is clean, simple and sharp-looking. The layout is easy and feels natural, like any regular wallet. While the wallet is sized a bit awkwardly and might not be easy to fit in your pocket, it should be comfortable enough in a pocket for quick storage while you’re heading through the airport.

Pros: Great RFID protection, sleek and stylish

Cons: A little large, travel documents need to be folded, can be hard to pull bills out of the deep pocket

Buy the Tumi Alpha Passport Case on Amazon for $110

The best travel wallet made from rugged leather

Why you'll love it: The Mr. Lentz Slim Passport Wallet is rugged, old-school, handmade, and built to last.

The Mr. Lentz brand is run by one person — Evan Lentz — who makes all of his products by hand in his own workshop. Lentz built the brand with a “modern cowboy” feel, designed to evoke days of hard work on the windswept plains, and his online shops reflect that with old-west images and icons.

Mr. Lentz makes wallets, bags and other accessories using durable, rugged and time-proven materials like full-grain leather, brass, and wood. Lentz’s passport wallet is a typical example of this style.

The wallet is simple, much more scaled down than the Bellroy Travel Wallet. A solid piece of leather makes a bifold that opens like a book. The right-side has a pocket for your passport, which is a little tight and only meant to fit the back cover of the passport. That way, the passport can be read without removing it from the wallet. You can just hand the whole package to the customs agent. Once the wallet breaks in a bit, you can fit the whole closed passport in that pocket.

The other side of the wallet has two card slots that can hold 4-6 cards. There’s a larger pocket right behind the card slots that is perfect for holding a bit of spare cash. You can also fit travel documents, like boarding passes, in this sleeve.

Aesthetically, the Mr. Lentz Passport Wallet looks rugged and hardy. The thick full-grain leather holds up well and develops a nice patina as you use it and break it in. Solid brass rivets line the outsides of the wallet, holding it together. The wallet also ships with a free tin of proprietary leather conditioner to help keep it soft as it ages and breaks in.

Thin enough to fit in a front pocket, this wallet is a perfect option for those looking for something that will last a long time and hold just the essentials. You can also choose to engrave the wallet, using any of a few different methods.

Pros: Slim, rugged, hand-made and built to last, holds the essentials

Cons: Needs to be broken in, brass rivets may not be everyone’s favorite look

5 things that used to be basic manners — but people no longer do

smoking cigarette man woman lighting lighter

People love to complain about the death of manners.

When we talk about modern manners, we seem to always wax nostalgic about how folks were more polite "back in the day." It's unclear where that means things were better in the 1870s, the 1950s, or just the era before smart phones.

Either way, from what you read about the kids these days, it seems the good times are long behind us.

The problem is, all of that is most likely bunk.

The British Psychological Society released an report in 2016 indicating that people might just perceive more rudeness from strangers nowadays — because we're kind of full of ourselves.

What we're truly discussing is the decline of formality, which can't necessarily be conflated with good manners — or basic human decency. People have always been nice and rude, and just about everything in between. Manners simply change with time and context.

Here are some old-fashioned manners that have fallen by the wayside:

SEE ALSO: 8 old-fashioned manners you can comfortably leave behind

DON'T MISS: 7 rules of medieval knighthood that will change the way you look at chivalry

1. Requiring men to tend to women in public

Back in the day, men weren't just expected to hold doors for women. They were to help them put their coats on, ease them out of their seats, order food for them, and pay for every meal. That may seem excessive to us, but it was simply good manners back until gender norms began to budge in US in the 1960s and 1970s.

Of course, people can adopt whatever old-school manners they want to in their personal life, as long as everyone's happy. But nowadays, this barrage of attentiveness wouldn't be considered courteous, Business Insider previously reported. In fact, many would find it patronizing and disconcerting.

2. Addressing people by their last name and title

Throughout much of modern history, it would have been considered catastrophically impertinent to address a new acquaintance — especially one of higher social rank — by their first name.

Today, in some situations, it's best to stick to a level of formality.

A 2013 survey in the UK found people really don't like telemarketers calling them by their first names, the Daily Mail reported.

However, it's becoming less common for people to insist on being addressed by their title and last name, Business Insider's Shana Lebowitz reported. A 1992 study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information found 45% of patients preferred to be called by their first names when meeting a physician for the first time — and 26% of respondents had no preference. When it came to doctors whom they knew well, 78% of patients wanted to be called by their first names.

Keep in mind, this isn't true across all cultures. Alan Hart writes in "Going to Live in France" that pulling this with an acquaintance in Paris could be considered a case of brash "over-familiarity."

3. Leaving calling cards

Back in the day, people would leave each other calling cards, to introduce themselves or let absent friends know they'd visited. There were all sorts of complicated rules surrounding the practice.

Then, phones were invented and social media happened. Etiquette experts agree that leaving calling cards is effectively dead nowadays, Business Insider reported.

Space.

The final frontier is airless, cold, and full of harmful radiation. But, for some companies, it could also be full of profits.

We, as a species, are starting to explore space more than ever. Titans of industry, like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, are developing new space technology for the transportation of humans and cargo. Spaceflight is getting cheaper, which is leading to more and more opportunity above the earth.

By the year 2040, the space industry could reach $1.1 trillion, according to a recent note from Morgan Stanley. Growing need for internet access around the world could be a big driver for the nascent space economy. Some companies, like Google and Facebook, are working on sending drones and balloons into the sky to provide fast internet to remote areas, but Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, says the future of the internet is a network of satellites.

"Working with our aerospace & defense, internet, satellite, and telecom analysts, we estimate a $400 billion+ incremental revenue opportunity from providing internet access to under- or unserved parts of the world," Jonas wrote.

The companies currently working on providing internet to underserved areas stand to heavily benefit from more internet consumers. Jonas expects an untapped $725 billion in revenue from social media, search, and e-commerce companies.

SpaceX is one of the most notable companies currently working on satellite internet. The company is currently testing satellite internet technology, but hopes to launch its first satellite access in 2019 and its internet service in 2022. Because of its plan, Jonas placed an estimated value of $46 billion on SpaceX

Space is almost unfathomably large, though. There is lots of room for companies to carve their own niche above Earth's atmosphere and to take advantage of satellites beaming the internet into new places on earth. Jonas, with the help of his colleagues at Morgan Stanley, picked 20 publicly traded companies he thought would benefit the most from the growing space economy. He listed them in no particular order, but they are as follows.

Lockheed Martin (LMT)

Sector: Aerospace and defense

Reasoning: "Lockheed Martin participates across all segments of the value chain, including satellites (AEHF), launch (United Launch Alliance), and ground systems. The company primarily caters to the US government with exposure to NASA and the DoD amongst others. In recent years, the company has made several investments focused on space, including a $300M refresh of its family of satellites concluded in 2017"

The best bets from this Saturday's college football slate

$

Purdue Wk 6

With each week of the college football season we learn a bit more about what we can expect come December and January.

Alabama and Clemson are still the two best teams in the country, but a fierce battle will determine the final two spots in the playoff, and right now both are still very much up for grabs.

With each week we also learn a bit more about who we should and shouldn't be betting on for the rest of the year.

Whether you were burnt by Florida one too many times or have grown weary of taking big favorites to cover after Oklahoma lost outright to Iowa State when they were 30 point dogs, each bit of information can help you moving forward for the (hopefully) small price of a lost bet.

Last week, we returned to our winning ways with a neatly profitable 4-3 record against the spread. This weekend we'll look to keep that trend going and start making some real money on the season.

Below are our best bets for this Saturday's college footbal slate. All lines come courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

LAST WEEK: 4-3
OVERALL: 22-20

Ole Miss (-3.5) over Vanderbilt

Ole Miss is reeling after three straight road losses including consecutive shellackings at the hands of Alabama and Auburn. But this week they return home to play an up-and-down Vanderbilt team. Look for the Rebels to right the ship and show their home crowd that they're better than the last two weeks have shown.

Purdue (+17.5) over Wisconsin

Purdue has an offense you can't take your eyes off of and will be one of the best tests this Wisconsin team has faced all season. Whenever there's an offense I love getting two touchdowns and change, it's a tough deal to turn down. The Boilermakers were winners for us last Saturday, let's see if they can keep up the success.

Arkansas (+31.5) over Alabama

It's always scary to take a team heading to Alabama to cover, but once again, this just feels like too many points to spot to a competent team like Arkansas. All you need is a few scores to make this line look easy.

Here's what the 'p' stands for in the Pixel 2 XL's pOLED display

$

pixel 2 xl

When Google announced its new Pixel 2 XL smartphone, it mentioned that it had a "pOLED" display.

We've heard of various types of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays before, including the AMOLED type that exists in the Pixel 2 and other smartphones like Samsung's Galaxy lineup. But pOLED went by unexplained during Google's announcement.

So check out what "pOLED" is:

SEE ALSO: The iPhone X has an OLED screen — here's what OLED is and how it's different from past iPhones

"pOLED" is part of the "OLED" display family.

OLED panels are mostly found in some high-end TVs, several Android smartphones, and most recently in the Apple iPhone X.

In general, OLED panels are better than LCD (liquid crystal display) panels in almost every way. They offer incredibly rich color reproduction compared to LCD panels you'd find in older Android phones and the iPhone 8, as well as better contrast between bright and dark areas.

OLED panels can also reproduce a perfect black color because the pixels displaying the color black will actually turn off entirely. When an LCD panel displays the color black, it tends to appear more gray because the entire LCD panel is constantly backlit, even when there's the color black being displayed. The liquid crystals in front of an LCD panel's backlight can't block out the backlight entirely, and thus the color black can rarely ever be properly reproduced.

By allowing pixels to turn off entirely for the color black, OLED panels can improve the battery life of mobile devices, too, especially when viewing darker content.

So what is the "p" in front of "OLED" in the Pixel 2 XL?

The "p" stands for plastic. pOLED is a display made by LG, the company that manufactures the Pixel 2XL for Google, and it uses a plastic base layer instead of glass like most OLED panels, according to Android Authority. pOLED is also found in LG's most recent V30 smartphone.

pOLED panels can be thinner, lighter, and cost less to manufacture than regular glass OLED panels, which makes sense for mobile devices.

Depending on what type of plastic is used, pOLED displays have the potential to be flexible, or even foldable. It could lead to interesting design choices in the future that glass OLED panels wouldn't cater to.

And because OLED-type displays turn off entirely when displaying the color black, it allows for the "always-on" mode on smartphones, where a phone can display the time and other basic information on the lock screen without using up much battery.

5 ways to change your everyday life if you want your side-hustle to be a success

$
0
0

Building a business on the side isn't for everyone. You'll need to sacrifice much even while you learn new things. Creating your own startup is challenging even when you dedicate full-time effort. When you're working to develop your idea on the side, it's likely your budget is every bit as limited as your time.

So how can you nail it? You need to change your life. Adopt an action plan to help you apply these principles and stay disciplined until you reach your goal.

SEE ALSO: How much money people are really earning from Uber, Airbnb, and 7 more side hustles

1. Sacrifice time with friends.

I know this is hard for a many people, but it's the reality. You need to reduce the time you spend with others. It's easier said than done. But it does produce results: When I started limiting the time I spent with my friends, I was able to grow my business faster.

Create a schedule that works for you and treat it as if your life depends on it. Unless you're completely burned out, don't change it just to have some fun.

2. Seize opportunity with every minute away from your full-time job.

Lack of money isn't your only obstacle. Time is the real resource you can't create. To build your company, you need to be a fast learner and apply what you pick up along the way. The best time to learn? The few minutes here and there, between everyday tasks.

If you have 10 minutes open on your schedule, you have time to take a business call or listen to a podcast.

3. Learn how to effectively manage your time.

Since every minute is precious, you need to make your downtime work for you. Books offer a wealth of knowledge to help you learn about time management. A book waits for you at the precise spot you left off, and you don't need large chunks of time to see a benefit. Start by reading 10 minutes before bed, while you're traveling or during those in-between task times mentioned earlier.

"Keep It Hid" is a highlight from Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant's 11th solo album, "Carry Fire." Built around a whirling, Radiohead-like synth, the four-minute track features cryptic lyricism and a restrained, yet potent, vocal performance from Plant.

Here's what Halloween costume you should wear based on your zodiac sign

Cinderella Lily James

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Halloween is more than just costumes and candy, it's a celebration that goes way back through the ages.
  • That doesn't mean we don't love putting on a creative costume when the day comes around.
  • Choosing a costume can be difficult with so many choices, but the stars might just be able to give you some insight.
  • Here is the best Halloween costume for you, according to your zodiac sign.

Halloween is a celebration that goes back through the ages. Originally a prayer day to give blessings to those who had died, it can also be a celebration of life.  Selecting a Halloween costume can be a difficult tast, but the stars might be able to help. Here’s the perfect Halloween costume for your sign.

Aries

Ms. Aries: The wicked witch is here. You can have a temper tantrum and be a dark witch or you can be a white witch. But for Halloween, it’s definitely of the black variety! You should also consider looking for a Venetian Mask. Perfect for party time!

Mr. Aries: The Devil. Those poor misguided souls who can’t stay on the straight and narrow will walk straight into your pitchfork. For a mask, go for a Stormtrooper — great for an Aries warrior.

Taurus

Ms. Taurus: Ruled by Venus, it has to be Goddess Venus. Love, glamour, and beauty. But watch out, Venus also has a jealous and possessive side to her. The perfect mask would be a peacock feather mask – simply beautiful.

Mr. Taurus: Try a Gandalf the Wizard costume and use your level-headed powers to fight evil and restore good in the world. You could also wear a Frankenstein Mask. After all, you both don’t like to be rushed!

Gemini

Ms. Gemini: For you, indulge in a fairy costume. Of course you’d be a mischievous fairy who just couldn’t help playing a few little tricks here and there. For a mask, look at a variety of Jester Masks. The beautiful ones, of course.

Mr. Gemini: Given Gemini’s love for playing tricks, a wicked jester costume is perfect! It's the perfect opportunity to be a prankster and actually get away with it. If you're not feeling the jester, look for a vampire mask.

I played 15 hours of the blockbuster new 'Shadow of War' game — here's what it's like

The new "Lord of the Rings" game, "Middle-earth: Shadow of War," is fine

Not in the '90s sense, but in the literal sense. It's not a terrible game, and it's not a great game. It's fine.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

I've spent around 15 hours murdering orcs and arguing with the ghost inside of the game's main character. What I've found is an aggressively mechanical game with a nonsensical story that's as fun to play as it is rote.

These are the highs and lows of "Middle-earth: Shadow of War."

SEE ALSO: 16 reasons why now is the perfect time to buy a PlayStation 4

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for "Middle-earth Shadow of War," including story and gameplay.

It probably goes without saying, but I'm going to speak explicitly about "Middle-earth Shadow of War"— this is a review, after all. If you don't want anything spoiled, turn back!

"Middle-earth: Shadow of War" is a third-person action game set in the "Lord of the Rings" universe.

To be clear, "Shadow of War" is a game about killing orcs by the wagon-full — thus the grisly creep you see above. The "Lord of the Rings" scenery and setting is merely a backdrop. Though it can feel overbearing at times, "Shadow of War" is not a game strictly for "LOTR" superfans.

There is a ring at the center of things, as is so often the case in Mordor. But does it matter?

If you're looking for a complex tale of adventure and sacrifice set in J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy universe, you're barking up the wrong Ent. "Shadow of War" is rife with "LOTR" references and characters, but dialog and story contrivances had me rolling my eyes from the first 10 minutes.

For a game that's so nakedly about the interplay of video game-centric systems, "Shadow of War" is bizarrely overloaded with needless storytelling. Can I get back to sneaking up and killing orcs?

The best external hard drives you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

hard drive 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • A portable hard drive can make it much easier to transfer your data from place to place. Not only is the Western Digital Elements 2TB Hard Drive fast, it also offers a hefty 2TB of storage, which should be plenty for most people's needs.

While much of the world is moving toward cloud storage, a great external hard drive can still be an extremely helpful tool, especially if your internet connection is spotty or you simply want to move files around without having to rely on cloud storage.

Of course, there are a ton of external hard drives to choose from, and they’re not all equal. A lot of work and development has gone into building on storage technology over the last few years, and as such, they’ve gotten a lot better.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re in the market for a new portable hard drive. For starters, you’ll want to consider the type of hard drive you want.

  • HHD vs. SSD: There are two main types: HHDs, or hard disk drives, and SSDs, or solid-state drives. The difference is pretty important. HHDs store information on a spinning disk and that disk can be a source of hard drive failure. SSDs, on the other hand, have no moving parts and are thus more reliable as portable hard drives. The tradeoff is that SSDs are a lot more expensive.
  • Storage amount: You’ll also want to consider how much storage you need. If you’re a videographer or photographer, chances are you could easily fill up a hard drive quickly, so you’ll want a higher-capacity drive. If on the other hand, you’re simply transferring Microsoft Word documents to and from work, then you won’t need as much storage and could save a few bucks by getting a lower storage drive.
  • Connection: Next up, you’ll want to think about the kind of connection you want your hard drive to connect through. The vast majority of external hard drives connect to a computer through USB, and nowadays it’s through USB 3.0, but there are still some USB 2.0-capable hard drives. There are also plenty of hard drives that connect through Firewire, and some that even connect through Thunderbolt.
  • Operating system: Last but not least is operating system-compatibility. Now, most hard drives can be formatted to work with both macOS and Windows, and you’ll be able to set that up when you first get the hard drive. Some, however, are pre-formatted, so you don’t have to worry about formatting.
  • Make two copies in different locations: A quick note about hard drives: none of these are 100% reliable. You should always have two copies of your data in different locations. Hard drive failures happen to even the most reliable of drives, and you don’t want to be stuck losing valuable data.

We've scoured external hard drive reviews on the web from experts and users to find the best hard drives for every use case. We've included hard drives with a ton of space, smaller ones, affordable options, and more. Read on to learn more about our top picks and find which one is best for you.

Updated on 10/13/2017 by Malarie Gokey: Added the Samsung T5 SSD after testing the product.

Although the Western Digital Elements 2TB Hard Drive is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Seagate Expansion 4TB Hard Drive, the G-Technology 1TB G-Drive, the Samsung T5 SSD, and the Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Hard Drive.

SEE ALSO: This should be your next external hard drive — here's why

The best portable external hard drive overall

Why you'll love it: The Western Digital Elements 2TB Hard Drive offers a relatively high storage capacity and USB 3.0 connectivity, but it only costs $75.

Western Digital has long been a leading name in the hard drive world, both for internal and external hard drives. The company’s hard drives are affordable and generally reliable, provided you take care of them. The Western Digital Elements 2TB hard drive offers the best bang for your buck.

For starters, this hard drive boasts a hefty 2TB of storage, which should be plenty for almost everyone. Even those with larger storage needs should be able to get a good amount of use out of this hard drive.

When it comes to connection speeds, the drive can connect through USB 3.0, and as such, it’ll offer speeds of up to 5Gb/s, which really fast. While it comes formatted for Windows, it can easily be reformatted for Mac users or for those who use both systems.

The pricing of the hard drive isn’t all that bad either. It’ll come in at $75, though if you want, you can pay $55 for a 1TB version. The drive has an average of 4.6 stars on Amazon, which is a pretty excellent score. Those who didn’t like it cited things like its write speed, which is 5,400 rotations per minute, as opposed to 7,200. For that reason, if you’re planning on using the drive for video or audio editing, you might have some issues. However, for most people's needs, it's a great option.

Pros: Excellent value for money, USB 3.0, relatively high storage capacity

Cons: Somewhat low write speed

Buy the Western Digital Elements 2TB hard drive on Amazon for $74.99 (originally $129.99)

The best high-capacity external hard drive

Why you'll love it: The Seagate Expansion 4TB hard drive is built by a well-known and generally reliable company, and it offers a massive 4TB of data.

Another major hard drive company is Seagate, which has been making great hard drives for some time. If you’re looking for something with a slightly higher capacity than the 2TB Western Digital Drive, then doubling that with a Seagate drive may be worth it.

Apart from the massive 4TB capacity, the Seagate Expansion offers a USB 3.0 connection, which also powers the drive, so you won’t need any external power source. While it does connect through USB 3.0, it is backward compatible with USB 2.0, so you won’t need to worry if you have a slightly older machine.

The drive, by default, is formatted for Windows computers, though you can reformat it to work better on Macs if you need it to. Perhaps the best thing about the drive, however, is its price. The $119.99 price tag for a 4TB drive is far better than what you would find from many other brands. Its 4.3 star average on Amazon is pretty nice, too.

There are a few negatives to consider here. As mentioned, it’s formatted by default for Windows machines, so if you’re a Mac owner who's not comfortable with reformatting a hard drive, you may want to look elsewhere. Not only that, but some users have noted reliability issues, so if you do go for this drive you should definitely follow the rule of always having two copies of your data in different locations.

For the most part, this is a great option for people who need a ton of storage for high-capacity files.

Pros: Lots of storage, USB 3.0, nice value for money

Cons: Not the best for Mac owners, some users have noted reliability issues

Buy the Seagate Expansion 4TB hard drive on Amazon for $104.99

The best 7,200RPM speed external hard drive

Why you'll love it: The G-Technology G-Drive has 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 connection, but its best feature is its fast 7,200RPM speed.

While 5,400RPM hard drives seem to be the standard for external drives, some people need faster read and write speeds. That’s where 7,200RPM drives come in. If you’re planning on editing audio or video on a hard drive, then you might want to buy one of these faster ones.

In our experience, the best 7,200RPM portable hard drive is the G-Technology G-Drive, which costs $80 and offers 1TB of storage. The drive connects through USB 3.0, so you’ll be able to take advantage of those faster speeds.

Unlike many other hard drives, this hard drive comes pre-formatted for Mac and not Windows, though Windows users can easily reformat the drive for use on a Windows machine. That’s likely because it’s targeted at media professionals, who tend to choose macOS over Windows. The drive also offers a three-year limited warranty, so you're covered if you run into problems.

There are a few downsides to consider. Because of the fact that the drive has a faster speed, it is a little more expensive than some others, especially for the amount of storage it has to offer. Still, with its 4.3-star rating on Amazon, most customers seem to be more than happy with the value for money.

Pros: Higher read and write speeds, three-year warranty

Cons: Not great for Windows, a little pricey

Buy the G-Technology G-Drive on Amazon for $79.95 (originally $99.99)

Eleven powers Stranger Things 2 trailer

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Stranger Things," including speculation of future events.

The second season of "Stranger Things" (which the creators are calling "Stranger Things 2") arrives on Netflix October 27. In the final trailer released on Friday, there were several curious clues and details we spotted among the thrilling scenes.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet, watch that first. Then keep reading to see all the important moments you might have overlooked.

Nancy and Jonathan are seen walking into a room with a huge assortment of papers hanging on the wall.

The end of season one showed Nancy and Steve dating, but the trailer has a lot of shots with just Jonathan and Nancy together.

Among the papers on the wall is a drawing of what looks like Eleven, and an important newspaper clipping.

The drawing looks like Eleven in her collared pink dress she wore during the first season.

"Russian?" is written above her head, and there's a newspaper clipping next to the image.

BookArc

I've used the BookArc with my MacBook Pro for over a year, and it's still the best stand I've found.

I prefer my home computer setup to be organized, which can be difficult since I use an external display and several accessories. But the BookArc keeps my MacBook Pro vertical and sturdy while staying compact, which is more than I can say for the previous options I tried.

Twelve South BookArc, $49.99, available at Amazon

ParcSlope

If you prefer a stand that lets you use your Mac's built-in display in addition to an external one, you should check out the ParcSlope.

The stand keeps your MacBook propped up at an angle, making it easy and more ergonomic to type. You can also use the ParcSlope to hold an iPad Pro if you like to annotate or edit photos.

MagicBridge

Another organizational accessory, the MagicBridge is a shell that connects a Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad together.

In some ways this lets you mimic the keyboard and trackpad setup you'd have on an Apple laptop with your iMac, which might appeal to people who have recently switched from one to the other.

The seven-floor home, located at the St. Moritz ski resort in Switzerland, was "designed to make a billionaire's jaw drop," listing agent Senada Adzem of Douglas Elliman Real Estate told "Secret Lives of the Super Rich." At $185 million, it's the most expensive home on the market in Switzerland at the moment and is reportedly owned by an unnamed billionaire.

With perks like a private ski lift to the slopes, a $1.3 million home theater, an underground lake, and rooms that surround you with 24-karat gold walls, this home is truly a playground for the wealthy.

The "X-Men" spin-off centers on five mutants forced into a secret facility.

Maisie Williams stars as Rahne Sinclair or Wolfsbane.

This popular athletic brand is now making women’s workwear — and it’s as comfortable as you’d think

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Screen Shot 2017 10 13 at 3.48.09 PMMPG Sport is a clothing brand that means to bring performance materials into everyday life, fusing smarter technical fabrics with fashionable styles that might not yet meet the functional standards that they should.

While MPG's activewear has been made to feel so comfortable you'll regularly want to wear it even when not headed to the gym, they've mostly stayed within the "athletic" lines of athleisure since their inception.

But as it doesn't make sense (now more than ever) to go through significant portions of your life uncomfortable — like the time you spend at your desk every week — MPG has recently released their first collection of work-centric clothes made out of performance materials. And to cut to the chase, if you commute to work (by bicycle, subway, or by foot) you'll likely want to grab one of their $48 button-ups with breathable (and stylish) panels built right in. In the 21st century, you really don't need to compromise so often. You can have comfort, great tailoring, and affordable pricing all in one piece — as opportunely demonstrated below.

While a first collection might not garner immediate confidence, this one certainly impressed us in our testing. The performance materials really did make a difference, and MPG managed to deliver on those at the same time that they kept the designs understated and semi-fitted to allow for multiple use and a polished look. At their price point, MPG's "Work Edit" pieces are overall more than valid options to replace whatever pieces you're looking to upgrade in your closet.

You can find our thoughts and the individual pieces we tried below, or you can shop the entire collection directly here.

When it's that in-between time where fall and winter meet, it can be hard to find the right jacket to wear. They're either too bulky and overly warm or too thin to protect you from wintry winds. MPG Sport's Solstice Insulated Fleece Jacket strikes the perfect balance with its slim, light, and cozy design.

The fabrics are light and breathable, but the interior quilting kept me nice and warm on the first truly crisp fall morning of the year. The jacket mixes matte black fabric with quilted sleeves and accents that have a slight sheen to them. The cuffs of the jacket even have thumb cutouts that help keep my hands warm. I especially love the slim profile of the jacket, which is perfectly fitted to my body. I'd recommend checking the sizing guide carefully and perhaps going a size up to ensure a good fit, because this jacket is tailored.

Solstice Insulated Fleece Jacket, $118

Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

I have a lot of white button-downs, but there’s a reason that I was interested in trying this exact variation — my own pairs either don’t sit well or don’t allow for much breathability. Since I walk to work, the materials that allow for free air flow and don’t compromise fit have become increasingly important to me, and this shirt delivered there like few others. Its four-way stretch also means I can wear it home on a bike just as comfortably as a performance shirt.

The well-integrated, permeated panels on the sides, upper back, and waist of this shirt make it comfortable to wear layered or on its own even on hot days. As a result, it might look slightly more technical (also thanks to the polyester and spandex blend fabric) than you’re used to, but all in all, I grew to like that about it — it looks modern as well as being functionally much more lightweight and breathable. My opinion was that the technical edge made it appear like a shirt that could have been retailed for much higher than $48 — for the price point (and even without considering it), I was really impressed.

While I was able to wear it on its own without being too transparent, this is a thin shirt and I wasn’t surprised to see it being layered in other images used by MPG Sport. Depending on what you’re planning on wearing underneath it, you might need/want to wear something underneath for added coverage. That wasn’t the case for me, but the material is light and white.

Milano Technical Dress Shirt, $48

Connie Chen, Insider Picks intern

As a California girl through and through, I am ill-equipped in the coats department to face New York fall and winter seasons. I always thought that warm coats had to be heavy or bulky as well. This fleece coat proved me wrong. Based on its lightweight feel and soft spongy texture, you wouldn’t expect it to keep you warm, but through chilly temperatures and winds it effectively protected my sensitive West Coast body.

I love any coat with front zip pockets because that means I can easily reach for my phone, keys, and MetroCard when I need them.

Outside of the coat’s great practical use, I also appreciated its oversized yet clean silhouette. It’s modern and simple and I can see myself wearing it anywhere from the office to a show.
