21 everyday phrases that come straight from Shakespeare's plays

Shakespeare

William Shakespeare wrote a lot of great plays, but he also coined and popularized a lot of words and phrases that we still use to this day.

We put together a list of our 21 favorites. Check them out:

"Puking"

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. ..."

How Shakespeare uses it: "Puking" was first recorded in Shakespeare's "As You Like It." It was likely an English imitation of the German word "spucken," which means to spit, according to Dictionary.com.

Modern definition: A synonym for the verb "to vomit."

Source: "As You Like It," Act 2, Scene 7

"Vanish into thin air"

"Then put up your pipes in your bag, for I'll away. Go; vanish into air; away!" (Othello)

How Shakespeare uses it: The Clown says this to the musicians in "Othello" to make them go away.

But some have also suggested that there is a darker underlying meaning. Act 3 in Othello is the final act that suggests that all of this might have a happy ending. It gets pretty dark starting in Act 4. So the Clown might be symbolically asking musicians and all happy things to "vanish into thin air" because there's no more room for them in the play.

A similar phrase is also found in "The Tempest."

Modern definition: To disappear without a trace.

Sources: "Othello," Act 3, Scene 1, "The Tempest," Act 4, Scene 1

"There's a method to my madness"

"Though this be madness, yet there is method in 't. Will you walk out of the air, my lord?"

How Shakespeare uses it: Polonius says it in "Hamlet," basically suggesting that there is reason behind apparent chaos.

Modern definition: The meaning is the same nowadays, although the language is a bit updated into modern terms. It is also a Bee Gees song.

49 'facts' about health we often believe that are misleading, inaccurate, or totally false

muscle body builder workout exercise health reuters

Carrots make you see in the dark. Don't swim after a meal or you'll cramp. Drink eight glasses of water a day for good health. No pesticides are allowed on organic foods.

These are just a few of the incorrect notions that we've all been told at one point or another.

But it's time to put an end to these alluring myths, misconceptions, and inaccuracies.

To help the cause we've rounded up and corrected dozens of the most popular health "facts" that we've heard over the years that just aren't true.

Did we miss a notable health myth? Send it to science@businessinsider.com.

Kevin Loria, Lauren Friedman, Kelly Dickerson,Jennifer Welsh, and Sean Kane contributed to this post. Robert Ferris contributed to a previous version.

DON'T MISS: Crushing an egg into your coffee sounds disgusting — but it makes an amazing-tasting drink

MYTH: Milk does a body good!

This is a successful bit of advertising that has wormed its way into our brains and policies to make milk seem magical.

The US Department of Agriculture tells us that adults should drink three cups of milk a day, mostly for calcium and vitamin D.

However, multiple studies show that there isn't an association between drinking more milk (or taking calcium and vitamin D supplements) and having fewer bone fractures.

Some studies have even shown an association with higher overall mortality, and while that doesn't mean that milk consumption itself was responsible, it's certainly not an endorsement.

Sources: Business Insider, NYTimes, Journal of Bone Mineral Research, JAMA Pediatrics, The Lancet, British Medical Journal

MYTH: All organic food is pesticide-free and more nutritious.

Organic food isn't always free of pesticides and it isn't necessarily better for you.

Farmers who grow organic produce are permitted to use chemicals that are naturally derived — and in some cases are actually worse for the environment than their synthetic counterparts. However, pesticide levels on both organic and non-organic foods are so low that they aren't of concern for consumption, according to the USDA. (A thorough rinse can eliminate most pesticide residues.)

Eating organic food also doesn't come with any nutritional benefits over non-organic food, according to a review of 98,727 potentially relevant studies.

Sources: University of California - Berkeley, Annals of Internal Medicine, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Business Insider

MYTH: Eating food within 5 seconds of dropping it on the floor is safe.

It's the worst when something you really wanted to eat falls on the floor. But if you grab it in five seconds, it's ok, right?

The five-second-rule isn't a real thing. Bacteria can contaminate a food within milliseconds.

Mythbusting tests show that wet foods attract more bacteria than dry foods, but there's no "safe duration." Instead, safety depends on how clean the surface you dropped the food on is.

Whether you eat it or not after that is up to you, but if the people that walk on that floor are also walking around New York City, for example, we wouldn't recommend it.

Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman all recently received contracts to develop a laser weapon for US fighter jets.

The three defense companies have also donated more money in the 2018 election cycle than any other company in the industry, according to a new analysis from the Center for Responsible Politics, which draws on the Federal Election Commission's latest political-candidate-contribution report.

The Center for Responsive Politics' numbers include all donor contributions to outside groups and political action committees, as well as individuals giving over $200.

In many cases, it notes, donations don't come from the firms themselves but rather from their PACs, employees or owners, or those individuals' immediate families.

Here's what they found.

Dyncorp didn't donate any money to candidates in the election cycles immediately before and after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Its first contributions came in the 2006 election cycle and increased in 2008.

19. Cobham Management Services.

49 of the longest celebrity relationships in Hollywood that prove that love can last

$

beyonce jay z grammys

It's not uncommon for celebrity marriages to fall apart. In fact, it's almost expected. But despite the downfall of many, a few Hollywood relationships have withstood the test of time.

Some have made it through reported cheating scandals, divorces, and breakups, and they've all had to deal with busy schedules. A few couples have kept their marriages private, but others have aired all of their dirty laundry. Some think avoiding official wedding vows is the key to success, but one couple just celebrated their golden anniversary.

These famous lovebirds may be divided on the best tips and tricks for happy relationships, but they all have one thing in common: they've lasted.

Here are 48 of the longest celebrity relationships.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi: 13 years

Ellen DeGeneres met Portia de Rossi in 2004 and the two later tied the knot in 2008.

In October 2016's issue of People magazine, where Ellen was featured on the cover, she opened up about being married to her "best friend."

"Portia and I constantly say to each other, 'We are so lucky.' Sometimes it’s lying in bed at night before I go to sleep, and I just say thank you to whatever, whoever is out there," she said.

Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso: 14 years

Matt Damon met his wife in Miami while she was tending bar. They were married in 2005 and have been together since.

With him shooting movie scenes all around the world, you could imagine how difficult things could get. Luckily, they've got it all figured out.

"We have a two week rule," he said to Your Tango in 2015. "I'm not away for more than two weeks. I think you need to be with the person you love as much as possible. My wife is my soul mate. I don't like being apart from her."

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher: 15 years

With Cohen taking on notorious roles, such as Borat, their marriage is far from ordinary.

"Instead of asking: 'Are you going to pick up the dry cleaning?' I'd ask, 'Are we getting sued by somebody?' or 'Is there a warrant out for your arrest?'"Fisher told Square Mile magazine in 2016.

Despite her constant worries, she's still game for the wild adventures her husband takes them on. She even helped him sneak in his banned Ali G costume to the Oscars.

A new fitness app charges you for every minute you spend at the gym — here's the verdict

  • The new app POPiN allows users to pay by-the-minute at participating gyms.
  • Users currently have access to six gyms in Manhattan.
  • Per-minute rates run from $0.14-$0.26.

Gym memberships are expensive, especially if you don't use them regularly. But even if you do use your membership consistently, they often only apply to a select number of gyms that have limited hours, which means you may be forced to pay $50 for a one-time pass if you want to exercise after staying late at work or traveling.

The new app POPiN attempts to solve this problem, allowing users to pay reduced rates to workout at participating gyms based on the amount of time they spend there. (There are six gyms available so far—all in Manhattan—with two more the company's website indicates will be available soon.) The per-minute rates run from $0.14-$0.26, which means that a 45-minute workout would cost between $6.30 and $11.70, a significant discount from the average gym's day pass.

We tried the app at the Mercedes Club in Midtown and saw why it might change the way we exercise.

12 simple hacks that will make hosting Thanksgiving easier and cheaper

  • INSIDER got expert tips, tricks, and hacks from celebrity chefs and cookbook authors on making Thanksgiving easier and cheaper.
  • Keep gravy in a thermos so it stays hot but frees up your stove.
  • Cook your turkey in a plastic oven bag so it makes for easier clean-up later.

If you're a guest at Thanksgiving dinner, there's nothing better than showing up with a store-bought pie, putting your feet up, and stuffing your face. But if you've ever hosted Thanksgiving, you know how stressful preparing for the gluttonous holiday can be.

Luckily, INSIDER has some expert tips and hacks to help make Thanksgiving prep a little easier (and cheaper), from the expertise of celebrity chefs and cookbook authors like Michael Symon and Cat Cora. From keeping your gravy warm in a thermos to free up the stove to making mini stuffing muffins for a time and space saver, these kitchen tricks will ease some of the worries of the Thanksgiving dinner host or hostess.

Find recipes that share ingredients so you can save money on grocery shopping.

"Buy products that you can use in multiple recipes to cut down on costs," Devin Alexander, cookbook author and chef on "The Biggest Loser," told INSIDER.

For instance, you'll likely be able to buy potatoes, onions, and corn in bulk for your Thanksgiving recipes, but you probably want to avoid recipes that call for a teaspoon of obscure, pricey ingredients like saffron or truffle oil.

Buy day-old bread for stuffing  it's cheaper and works better.

When you're looking to cut financial corners for a Thanksgiving meal, it's best to look for bread in the clearance section, Alexander says.

"Day-old bread is better than fresh for stuffing anyway," she said.

Go around your supermarket sales.

When it comes to shopping for the best Thanksgiving meals, always think ahead. If you shop last-minute, you won't be able to take advantage of sale cycles and store deals.

"Plot your menu as soon as possible and carry the list of non-perishables and frozen foods to the grocery stores during regular visits between now and Thanksgiving," Alexander said.  "A lot of items cycle through sales, so you might be able to snag many more at a discount if you start seeking them out early."

She also noted that a lot of stores offer free turkeys around Thanksgiving time if you spend enough money.

These are all the feuds Taylor Swift references on 'Reputation'

$

taylor swift music video look what you made me do bathtub jewels

Taylor Swift is reportedly feuding with a lot of different celebrities. In her new album, "Reputation," it appears as if she talks about many of them.

In addition to being a self-examination, the lyrics on her album seemingly allude extensively to her feuds, especially with Kanye West and exes like Calvin Harris.

Most of these arguments are years old, and the origins of them are obscure. At this point, they should have healed with time.

Here's a breakdown of her lyrics and which feuds they are likely referring to. We've relied on Genius for the transcriptions.

SEE ALSO: These are all the feuds Taylor Swift references on 'Reputation'

She seems to slam her many older exes on "...Ready For It?"

The insult comes in the first verse, where she appears to praise her current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, who's a year younger than her, to insulting her older exes.

"Some boys are tryin' too hard, he don't try at all though
Younger than my exes, but he act like such a man, so
I see nothing better, I keep him forever
Like a vendetta-ta"

Many of Swift's exes have been older than her. Most recently, there was Tom Hiddleston and Calvin Harris. She also slammed John Mayer for dating her when she was 19 and he was 32 in "Dear John."

In "Don't Blame Me," later in the album, Swift also confesses that she's "been breakin' hearts a long time/And toyin' with them older guys."

Before she dives in, Taylor Swift brings Ed Sheeran and Future to talk about their feuds.

The first track on the album, "...Ready For It" whets the listeners appetite for drama. "End Game" alludes to it more directly: "Ah, and you heard about me/Ooh, I got some big enemies (yeah)/Big reputation, big reputation," Swift sings.

Then she brings on Future and Ed Sheeran, who both sing "I got a reputation, girl, that don't precede me."

What can those refer to? Well, Future has some beef with the rapper Rocko, and Ed Sheeran has championed Swift in her years-long feud with Katy Perry.

In "I Did Something Bad," she seems to reference her revenge on Calvin Harris.

"I Did Something Bad" is, as the title suggests, a confessional. Taylor Swift took revenge. In this case, it's likely about Calvin Harris.

After Harris and Swift broke up, Harris was reportedly "trashing" her to other people. Swift apparently leaked the news that "Nils Sjöberg," the co-writer for Harris's biggest song, "This is What We Came For,"was actually herself, embarrassing Harris.

"If a man talks s---, then I owe him nothing/I don't regret it one bit, 'cause he had it coming," Swift sings on "I Did Something Bad."

Swift revels in her power later in the song, arguing that people are going to hate her no matter what, so she may as well go for it: "They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one/They got their pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons/They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one/So light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)."

Furthermore, "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" suggests a deep ambivalence about her relationship with him. Harris reportedly gifted her a locket during their relationship. Swift alludes to it in her lyrics.

"I could've spent forever with your hands in my pockets
Picture of your face in an invisible locket
You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it
I had a bad feeling."

The lyrics to "Gorgeous"also may refer to Harris and "Getaway Car"may be about her breakup with him.

The NFL has been rocked by injuries this season — here are the 20 biggest stars who have gone down

Aaron Rodgers

The NFL's regular season is only halfway done, but we've already seen a surprising number of star players go down due to injury.

Football fans have been left with enough big names to still be entertained — Russell Wilson and Tom Brady are the league's leading passers, for example, while Ezekiel Elliott and Le'Veon Bell rank among the best on the ground. But between Aaron Rodgers, David Johnson, J.J. Watt, and all the others who are sidelined, it feels like there's something missing about this season.

Take a look at all 32 injury reports, and you may be shocked at just how many prominent players are injured. Below, read up on 20 of the biggest names.

Richard Sherman, CB

Team: Seattle Seahawks

Injured since: Week 10

How it happened: Sherman suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while going for an interception on Thursday night. That was less than a year after he wrote a Players' Tribune post entitled "Why I Hate Thursday Night Football." He has never missed a game since he was drafted in 2011, but that streak will end next week.

Aaron Rodgers, QB

Team: Green Bay Packers

Injured since: Week 6

How it happened: Rodgers' season may have ended with a big hit from Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr; soon after, the Packers announced that their franchise quarterback had suffered a broken collarbone and placed him on injured reserve. They haven't won a game since. There is some hope that he could return late in the season, but that seems unlikely.

Deshaun Watson, QB

Team: Houston Texans

Injured since: Week 9

How it happened: Watson tore his ACL during a practice, just seven games into one of the most memorable starts to a career in the history of the league. The Clemson product still leads the league in yards per pass attempt with 8.3.

Don't walk. Don't go to school. Don't breathe too fast.

That's just some of the advice from authorities in Delhi, India this past week, when the smog became so thick that is was described by the local government as a "gas chamber."

Last November, the city experienced some of its worst pollution in decades, and this year looks like it's going to be a repeat. Here's what it's like for people who live in the Indian capital right now:.

The air quality index, which measures the levels of five major pollutants in the air, is above 400 in Delhi. That's the highest pollution category. The air is called "hazardous" at this level.

For comparison, the air in Shanghai is registering around 40 on the World Air Quality Index, and in New York City on Friday night it was 33, according to EPA measurements

Breathing is worse than inhaling two packs of cigarettes a day.

Just breathing the air is about as bad as smoking 44 cigarettes a day right now, CNN reports.

The levels of smog being recorded right now in Delhi are more than 20 times worse than in Beijing, a city that often deals with heavy pollution.

12 striking photos of soldiers and civilians commemorating Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a holiday where Americans celebrate and honor those who have served.

The holiday originally started as a day to remember the sacrifices of American troops during WWI. Originally called "Armistice Day," it was first observed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, making this year the 99th occasion.

In 1954, Congress and President Dwight D. Eisenhower passed a bill that made the holiday official. The name "Armistice Day" was changed to "Veterans Day" to honor all veterans from all of America's wars.

"Our veterans are our heroes," President Donald Trump said in a statement earlier this month, proclaiming November as National Veterans and Military Families Month. "Our Armed Forces have preserved the security and freedom that allow us to flourish as a Nation."

These photos show the way veteran, active duty soldiers, and civilians celebrate Veterans Day:

The most exciting city to visit in every state — and the most boring one you can probably skip

$

Charleston

Debates about "best" and "worst" cities elicit strong feelings. It's a tricky issue because such debates are largely subjective.

So Business Insider attempted to use data to definitively prove which are the most exciting and most boring cities in every state across America.

To do that, we took counts of the number of establishments for 66 different types of businesses — like breweries, art dealers, and museums — that can make a city more "interesting." We sourced data from the Census Bureau's 2015 County Business Patterns program and picked the metro areas with the highest and lowest count of these businesses for our interesting and boring cities.

For example, the New York City metro area has 62 breweries, 762 art dealers, and 305 museums, based on federal data. That ended up being the "most exciting" city in New York. Elmira, the "most boring" city in New York, has two breweries, zero art dealers, and four museums. Of course, this means that bigger cities tended to rank better as "exciting" cities, but that is a trend for most lists of this nature.

The list below breaks out cities by each of the 381 Metropolitan Statistical Areas recognized by the federal government. You will see that some of the metro areas span more than one state (e.g. New York City includes Jersey City and Newark, New Jersey). We have made it clear in the slides below which metro areas span more than one state.

And two states — Rhode Island and Vermont — are not included in the list because they don't have at least two metro areas as defined by the federal government.

Read below to see the most exciting and most boring city in every state in America.

The best bets from Week 11's college football slate

$

Auburn

What a week!

We had our best Saturday of the college football season last week, going a fantastic 6-1 against the spread.

Our one miss was an embarrassing misread of the Mississippi State game, for which I take all the blame, but with easy covers from Oklahoma, USC, LSU, and others, we still made a bunch of money, for which I happily take all the credit.

Joking aside, it's another tough week for gamblers out there, with much more risk involved as the stakes are raised week after week for the teams on the field. I'll say that I suggest that this is a week you're careful with your money — these games are compelling enough to enjoy without having a financial rooting interest in them. That said, it's our duty to make seven picks against the number week after week.

Here's our betting breakdown of Week 11 of the college football season.

All lines are courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

LAST WEEK: 6-1
OVERALL: 40–30

Mississippi St (+14) over Alabama

Last week, taking Mississippi State to cover as huge favorites against UMass was our only losing pick of the week. It was obviously the wrong pick, and I offer my apologies. To make it up to you, here's a winner. Mississippi State is getting way too many points against Alabama this week. The Bulldogs can score and will be fighting to protect home turf. After last week's scare against an inferior opponent, you can be sure they'll be wide awake for this one.

Auburn (+2.5) over Georgia

While I hate to bet against Georgia, it feels like this is the week they might stumble. Auburn is a tough road environment, and as visiting favorites that have been designated the best team in the country, Georgia is in unfamiliar territory. I expect Auburn to at the very least keep this one close — but this game is likely good enough you won't need to bet on it to enjoy what it has to offer.

Ohio State (-16.5) over Michigan State

Ohio State underperformed last week and Michigan State over-performed last week. There will be a lot of talk heading into this game about how the Spartans can pull this one out with one right bounce this way or that, and then I expect the Buckeyes to jump out to a huge lead right away and never look back.

World War I, which ended 99 years ago on Saturday, took the lives of about 40 million people and is considered by many to be the first total, industrial war.

Although World War I did not deliver on its promise to be the "war to end all wars," its conclusion on November 11, 1918, has been celebrated around the globe as Armistice Day. In the US, it is marked as Veterans Day

Central Park South, New York City

  • Central Park South is the most expensive rental neighborhood in New York City.
  • The neighborhood's median asking rent is $6,500 a month.
  • Once known as "hotel row", many of those accommodations have now been converted into condos and co-ops.

One of Manhattan's smallest neighborhoods is also its most expensive for renters. Just below Central Park, between 5th and 8th Avenues on 58th and 59th Streets, you'll find the micro-neighborhood known as Central Park South.

This small stretch of Manhattan is bounded by the greenery of Central Park on one side and soaring condo buildings and five-star hotels on the other. Billionaire's Row, which earned its name from its sky-high buildings with sky-high prices, is nearby.

According to StreetEasy data, the median asking rent in Central Park South is $6,500 a month.

Below, take a look at this small but extremely expensive micro-hood.

The area is easily accessible by the subway's N, R, and W lines (pictured here) along with the A, C, B, and D lines at Columbus Circle.

At the corner of 59th Street and Grand Army Plaza is the prestigious, landmark hotel: The Plaza.

The Plaza reopened in 2008 after a redesign that included adding apartments. At the time, the condos sold for $5.8 million to $7 million.

5 helpful tips from Google will help you take better portrait mode photos

OP5 Portrait mode

These days, it's rare for a flagship smartphone to arrive without portrait mode.

For the unfamiliar, portrait mode is a camera feature that keeps the subject of the photo in focus and slightly blurs out the background — this is called "bokeh," in photography terms. The feature makes smartphone photos look a lot like those taken with a high-end DSLR.

The iPhone X has this feature, as do the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus. The new Google Pixel 2 has a version of portrait mode on both sizes of the phone, and the new Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 5, and Essential Phone all have it, too.

Portrait mode is getting so popular these days that Apple and Google have now added it on both the rear and front-facing cameras on their most recent phones, meaning you can now take portrait mode selfies.

While the feature is relatively intuitive, there's more to taking a nice portrait mode photo than pointing you camera at the subject. Thankfully, Google put together a helpful guide for taking great portrait mode photos. While Google's guide is geared toward Pixel 2 users, the tips and tricks apply to all smartphone cameras that have portrait mode.

Here are five of Google's top tips for taking great portrait mode photos:

SEE ALSO: Here’s why Apple’s 'Portrait Mode' feature only works on some iPhones and not others

1. Find great lighting.

In most cases, portrait mode refuses to work at all in low light, so you may not have a choice here. But either way, look for well-lit situations to test out the feature.

As you can see in my colleague Melia Robinson's photo, having bright, natural light made it a breeze to take a nice portrait mode photo. Even though Melia's face is in shadow, the camera easily blurred out the background because there was so much light to work with. The resulting photo is crisp and bright without any noise, or graininess.

2. Make sure the subject is actually in focus.

If your subject isn't sharp, it defeats the whole purpose of portrait mode.

To make sure it's in focus, tap on the screen where you want the photo to be its sharpest.

With phones that have a "live" version of portrait mode like the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X — instead of one that's created by software, like the Pixel 2 — you'll be able to see where the camera is focused in real-time.

3. Don't stand too close to the background.

This tip applies to selfies and photos taken with the rear camera.

In the photo above, I'm standing a little bit away from the wall and the phone booth. It's hard to tell that from the original, non-blurred photo on the left, but it's clear from the photo on the right that there was some distance there. That's how the background was able to blur so nicely.

Portrait mode works best when the camera and the phone's software can easily differentiate between the foreground and the background. When those two things are too close together, or too similar, portrait mode doesn't work as well.

In my experience using portrait mode, it's best to have the subject stand about 1-2 feet away from the background.

10 big brands you can't get on Amazon (AMZN)

Louis Vuitton

  • Amazon sells many brands with its millions of items it offers for sale on its site.
  • There are a few holdouts, however.
  • It's mostly clothing and luxury brands that are worried about the Amazon third party marketplace or perception.

Which brands sell — and which don't — on Amazon is not always easy to figure out.

The website and its third-party marketplace mixes everything together, so just becuase you can find a Chanel bag on Amazon.com, that doesn't mean it's Amazon selling it for the manufacture's suggested retail price.

Most luxury brand don't sell their goods on Amazon, despite a push by the retailer to move further into the luxury space. It experienced success in this space when it entered agreements with Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and Kate Spade, according to Fortune.

Some brands have resisted. Many goods sold on Amazon with luxury brand names are just licensed goods, like watches and fragrances.

The CFO of luxury conglomerate LVMH said in 2016 there was "no way we can do business with them for the time being."

In an effort to court the brands, Amazon has stepped up the policing of its third party marketplace due to new agreements made with brands to clean up the site. Some brands enter into agreements to sell a portion of their product — say something small like perfume or socks — in exchange for this policing.

Other brands — particularly shoe and outerwear brands — have a relationship with Amazon's subsidiary, Zappos.com, but not with Amazon itself.

Here's a list of other brands you still can't find on Amazon. This list is by no means exhaustive, and there are likely many other big brands that don't offer their goods on Amazon. It is based on what brands have stated publicly coupled with a cursory search of Amazon.com based on knowledge of popular brands.

Birkenstock

While Birkenstock used to sell on Amazon, the brand stopped at the end of the year. In a letter by the brand's US CEO David Kaha wrote to retail partners last year, he wrote:

The Amazon marketplace, which operates as an 'open market,' creates an environment where we experience unacceptable business practices which we believe jeopardize our brand. Policing this activity internally and in partnership with Amazon.com has proven impossible.

LVMH brands

LVMH's steadfast refusal to sell on Amazon means it doesn't have any Louis Vuitton,

Rolex

Rolex, like all high-end watch brands, does not offer its products for sale on Amazon. Luxury watchmakers dole out their product very carefully only to a select number of dealers worldwide.
