Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson has been one to watch ever since her first big role in 2001's "Ghost World."

Since then, she's become a style icon known for channeling old Hollywood glamour. She often hits red carpets in retro-inspired dresses and completes almost every look with the classic red lip

Here's how her style has evolved through the years.

For the premiere of "Ghost World" in 2001 — one of her first red carpet appearances at age 16 — ScarJo stepped out in a red trench coat and matching shoes.

The following year at age 17, she went with the theme for the premiere of "Eight Legged Freaks" by pairing a fake black spider with her black skirt and top.

For the 2003 "Lost in Translation" premiere, the then-18-year-old stepped up her game in a plunging power suit.

All the Betty and Jughead relationship moments on 'Riverdale' so far

jughead betty riverdale

Fans of Betty and Jughead were crushed when this "Riverdale" couple came to a heartbreaking end on the most recent episode.

Bughead, as the couple is endearingly called by fans who "ship" the couple, was forced to break up after the mysterious Black Hood threatened Betty with a promise to endanger Jughead should the couple stay together.

The couple has weathered a number of storms since first coming together on season one of the hit CW drama, but it's going to be a difficult journey for these two to reconcile now.

Here's a retrospective in honor of Bughead's better days.

Betty convinces Jughead to join the Blue and Gold, the high school newspaper, with her.

Hard to believe that Betty starts "Riverdale" with her heart set on Archie. But when she and Jughead begin to write for the school paper and investigate Jason Blossom's murder, their relationship is purely platonic. They interrogate Dilton Doiley for more information on the Blossom murder.

Jughead seems concerned when Betty says she has a "date" with someone else.

While making their "murder board," Trev interrupts Betty, Kevin, and Jughead to check in with Betty about their "date." Betty later says it's a way to get more information about Jason, but Jughead doesn't seem to like the idea.

They attend Jason's memorial together.

Jughead picks Betty up and the two head to the Blossoms' mansion. They sneak off to find Jason's room when Cheryl breaks down in tears, but stumble upon Grandma Blossom. She mistakes Betty for Polly, Betty's sister, and reveals that Polly and Jason were engaged.

5 career myths that could be holding you back

$
0
0

man thinking

Myths, old wives' tales, and urban legends: Whatever you call them, they have no place in career planning.

Unfortunately, there's plenty of outdated (or altogether false) information that can bring your career to a screeching halt. If you're holding on to these relics, it's time to let them go and focus on taking advantage of career opportunities.

"Just do you," says Lynn Carroll, a career coach in Norristown, Pennsylvania. "Don't worry about what others say if their advice doesn't fit with your unique situation."

For starters, you can completely disregard these five commonly held myths in your next job search. Knowing the truth will set you on your path to career growth.

SEE ALSO: 8 questions that will tell you if you're in the right job

Myth 1: You must perfectly match all job requirements to apply

You find the perfect job on Monster, only to discover the company is looking for someone with five years of experience. You have four. But don't hang your head! You're not automatically disqualified.

"Often candidates opt out of pursuing great career opportunities for fear they do not match all of the requirements listed on the job posting," says Alyssa Krane, chief talent strategist at Powerhouse Talent, a boutique HR consultancy in Toronto. "While the job posting outlines the ideal candidate, the truth is, at times, employers need to adjust their requirements to meet the talent supply in the market." If you meet all the main skill requirements, you should absolutely apply to that job.

Furthermore, if a company lists a niche skill on the job posting, they may not find any candidates who fit the bill. In that case, they will often end up hiring someone who demonstrates other skills and shines in other areas, Krane says. So if you have a winning track record in development but haven't used the latest fundraising software, don't let that prevent you from applying to a job.

Myth 2: Follow your passion—and only your passion

Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life, right? Wrong. You know what turns your passion into a pain in the neck really quickly? A deadline, a client taking your vision and changing it, or having to send invoices repeatedly when customers are late paying. Then not only is your job unsatisfying, but you're also out one hobby that you used to enjoy.

Having a job you love isn't necessarily the same thing as following your passion. It's a big world out there, and you can find fulfillment in plenty of jobs. Look for a job that you'll find satisfying rather than limit yourself to something you're totally passionate about. Maybe you love to fish; there are loads of environmental careers that overlap with your fishing interests.

"Consider your passions, but balance that with the larger macro-economy, what your skills and talents are, and the networks you have developed," says Ben Brooks, New York City–based founder and CEO of PILOT, a tech platform that helps companies retain their best employees by actively managing their career paths.

Myth 3: Leadership skills develop naturally with time

You may be a genius at your job, but if you lack leadership and managerial skills, those won't magically appear the second you get promoted or get a new job. You need to work on honing those separately, says Terry Traut, founder and CEO of Entelechy, a leadership-development company in Silver Lake, New Hampshire.

Leadership is a skill that requires continuous nurturing, and getting help from your supervisor can help you set new expectations, sharpen your people skills, and build your confidence. You should be reading, taking professional-development courses, and asking for continuous feedback and input from your employees, your boss, your peers, and anyone who will help you improve. "Reflect on what's working and what you could do differently to be more effective," Traut says.

Whole Foods

Whole Foods is swiftly transforming under Amazon's control.

Amazon's $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods formally went through in August.

The changes began immediately, from cutting costs to internal restructuring.

And, in the months since August, Amazon has only accelerated the pace of change.

Here's what changes have been revealed so far — and how they'll affect Whole Foods shoppers.

SEE ALSO: I visited Whole Foods on the day it was acquired by Amazon — and it's clear it'll never be the same

Whole Foods immediately cut prices.

The day the acquisition went through, prices of many Whole Foods staples immediately dropped. Some price tags decreased by up to 40%.

An identical basket of items from a Whole Foods location in Brooklyn went from $97.76 pre-acquisition to $75.85 post-acquisition.

The grocery stores began selling Amazon Echos and Echo Dots.

According to Amazon, the popular voice-controlled speaker system will be available at select Whole Foods locations. A Brooklyn location advertised the Amazon Echo as the "pick of the season" the day the acquisition was completed.

In November, more than 100 stores started selling even more Amazon tech.

These Whole Foods stores now sell products including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Fire TV, Kindle e-readers, and Fire tablets.

Whole Foods is offering major discounts on these Amazon products the week leading up to Black Friday. Whole Foods' pre-Black Friday deals include $20 off the Echo Dot, $20 off the new Amazon Echo, and $30 off the Kindle Paperwhite.

These 5 stocks are featured in a new blockchain index — and they're all on a tear

Patrick Byrne, Overstock

  • Reality Shares and Nasdaq announced the launch of an index to track companies in the booming blockchain industry.
  • Blockchain, the technology underlying cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ethereum, has become a popular buzzword on Wall Street as the prices of digital coins and tokens continue to climb.
  • The Reality Shares Nasdaq Blockchain Economy Index includes a wide-range of companies across sectors.

Exchange operator Nasdaq and Reality Shares, an investment marketplace, unveiled a new index on Monday designed to capture the growth of blockchain technology.

The smart-beta index called the Reality Shares Nasdaq Blockchain Economy Index, is planned to provide the basis for an exchange-traded fund by Reality Shares, according to a press release about the new index. The ETF has already been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission by Reality Shares.

Blockchain is best known for being the technology underlying cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, but it could have applications outside of cryptocurrencies.

Jonathan Johnson, the head of Medici Ventures, a VC subsidiary of Overstock, a company in the index, told Business Insider blockchain could potentially have the same kind of impact as the internet.

"We see blockchain doing for the transfer of value what the internet did for the transfer of info and we want to be at the front of that wave of innovation and change," Johnson said.

As a decentralized ledger, blockchain can facilitate exchanges of assets without the need of a middle-man. As such, it has gripped the attention of Wall Street with companies such as Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley all participating in at least one blockchain consortium

But the new index includes a wide-range of companies, according to Reality Shares. Following are five companies featured on the index's site.

HIVE Blockchain Technologies

Ticker:HIVE

Market cap: $320 million

Year-to-date stock performance: 3,204%

Index description:

"HIVE Blockchain Technologies is building a bridge from the blockchain sector to traditional capital markets. The company has strategically partnered with Genesis Mining Ltd., the world’s leading cryptocurrency mining hashrate provider, to build the next generation of blockchain infrastructure."

Accenture

Ticker: ACN

Market cap: $111.8 billion

Year-to-date stock performance: 24.8%

Index description:

"Accenture is working closely with leaders from across a broad range of industries, governments, consortia, the academic community, and its key technology alliances to move blockchain technology forward so that, ultimately, it can help improve the way the world lives and works."

Hitachi

Ticker: HIT

Market cap: $38 billion

Year-to-date stock performance: 33.5%

Index description:

"Hitachi is a founding member of the Hyperledger Project and consortium, and has partnered with Tech Bureau to use the NEM-based Mijin Blockchain platform for Hitachi’s point management solution “PointInfinity,” which serve 150 million members and users."

Your supermarket is filled with germs — here are 7 facts that will make you dread grocery shopping

supermarket overhead

  • Reusethisbag.com surveyed more than 100 grocery stores of varying size in 10 states in September 2017 and commissioned EMLab P&K in Ohio to test surfaces for bacteria.
  • Large swaths of harmful bacteria were found on almost all surfaces at upscale and budget, large and small grocery stores.
  • The study found the most harmful bacteria count on shopping carts.
  • Upscale supermarkets had the highest germ count in the produce aisle.

We all know to wash our hands after going to the bathroom, and to de-sanitize our keyboard regularly, but there's one place germs are hiding that we can't easily control: the grocery store.

Think about it: You share shopping carts with strangers and pick up unwrapped produce that's been inspected by dozens of unseen hands.

Reusethisbag.com, an online retailer for reusable shopping bags, recently released the results of a study in which they — in conjunction with EMLab P&K in Ohio — surveyed the bacteria levels at more than 100 grocery stores of varying sizes and price levels in 10 states across America. The survey covered New York, California, Texas, Florida, and Maine.

Lab workers spent months swabbing surfaces of shopping carts, refrigerator doors, and produce, and found some startling results: the dangerous bacteria count in traditional, budget, and upscale grocery stores was higher than in your bathroom, on the surface of your phone, or even at the bottom of Fido's food bowl.

Keep scrolling to learn the unfortunate truth about the health risks in your local grocery store.

Budget grocery store shopping carts have 270 times more bacteria than your toilet handle.

A budget grocery store cart has 8,112 bacteria colonies per square inch, while a toilet handle only has 30 bacteria colonies per square inch.

Traditional grocery store shopping carts have 361 times more bacteria than a bathroom door knob.

Traditional grocery stores were by far the worst offenders when it came to dirty shopping carts. Their bacteria levels were almost 10 times the amount found at budget grocery stores, and 80 percent of the bacteria types found were considered harmful, antibiotic-immune, and could cause illnesses in humans.

75% of germs identified in grocery shopping carts were harmful.

Overall, 75% of the grocery cart swabs tested at each of the 100 stores tested positive for a bacteria type known as "gram-negative rods," which are harmful to humans in 90% of cases.

10 times official Russian government accounts have trolled the US and UK on Twitter

putin

  • Russia uses its official government Twitter accounts to rebuke its critics and troll Western leaders.
  • On Tuesday, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted a satirical response to UK Prime Minister Theresa May's criticism of Moscow's interference in elections.
  • Kremlin trolling on Twitter dates back years.

During the 2016 election, Russian-linked bots and trolls on social media attempted to inflame relations among Americans by spreading fake news and highlighting vulnerable racial and political divisions. They bought ads on Twitter and shared posts on Facebook, concealing their identities while pretending to be real Americans.

But the Kremlin has another, more conspicuous way of spreading propaganda and trolling the West that doesn't normally get as much attention.

In the last few years, Russia has used official government Twitter accounts to undermine the West and hit back against criticism, often with tantalizing and meme-filled rhetoric. The Twitter accounts of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and its Embassy in the UK, both of which tweet in English, have been particularly active.

On Tuesday for example, after UK Prime Minister Theresa May slammed Russia for planting fake stories and photo-shopping images on social media "in an attempt to sow discord in the West," Russia's MFA tweeted a satirical response.

MFA_Russia_🇷🇺_on_Twitter____UK_Prime_Minister__theresa_may_on__Russia__“We_know_what_you_are_doing”__We_know_what_YOU_are_doing_as_well__Dear_Theresa__we_hope__one_day…_https___t_co_3HvflufZzE_

This was just the latest in a string of official Russian government tweets aimed at sparking controversy among Moscow's adversaries.

In a report published Tuesday, the watchdog group Freedom House noted that in few places is "the hypocritical link between state propaganda and legal restrictions on the media stronger than in Russia." This gives Russia monopoly over the flow of information within its borders. Increasingly, the report says, Russia has used similar information manipulation tactics abroad.

Here are 9 other times Russia has used its official Twitter accounts to troll Western leaders and the media:

target black friday

Black Friday is known for massive sales that attract large, often rowdy crowds. But for serious bargain hunters, it's the best shopping day of the year.

To make your trip to the mall easier, INSIDER rounded up some of the biggest tips for Black Friday shopping. From making a shopping list to downloading apps, here are 14 ways to make the most out of Black Friday sales.

Do your research.

The most successful Black Friday shoppers start planning before November even starts, according to The Penny Hoarder. While that might sound daunting, it's actually easy to plan your shopping trip in advance, as many stores, like Target, release their Black Friday sale flyers almost a month in advance.

Make a shopping list.

Once you've done your research, Mint, a popular banking app, suggests that you make a list of the items you want to buy and where you want to buy them from.

Set a budget for yourself.

After you draft your shopping list, you'll want to set a budget, according to Mint. Without a predetermined spending limit, you're more likely to go overboard on items you just don't need.

I tried the $115 service that lets you fall asleep in LA and wake up in San Francisco, and it blew me away

Cabin Passengers 03

Someday, I might hail a flying Uber car or climb aboard the Hyperloop for transportation from San Francisco to Los Angeles. In the meantime, a sleepaway bus offers a good alternative.

Founded in 2016, Cabin (formerly known as SleepBus) recently launched a chartered bus service between SF and LA that allows passengers to fall asleep in one city and wake up in the next — for about $100 one-way. The logistics are a no-brainer: Get in, grab a bunk, and snooze.

The flat rate makes it more affordable than flying and potentially more convenient than driving, but only if you can handle the tight quarters and 23 passengers aboard the double-decker bus.

Last weekend, I had the chance to try Cabin on a return trip from LA to SF. Here's how it went.

SEE ALSO: Audi is taking on Enterprise and Hertz with a rental service that delivers luxury cars to your door — here's what it's like

Los Angeles is my own personal "Carmageddon." I don't make it down there as much as I would like, because the six-hour drive is inconvenient and traffic can be very stressful.

Of course, I could fly. But it's not cheap and often takes just as long. A round trip flight booked about a month in advance will set you back at least $100, after tax and fees.

Then I discovered Cabin. Entrepreneurs Tom Currier and Gaetano Crupi started the company in 2016 when they saw a need for better budget travel between cities.

Here's how advertisers have responded to Hannity's coverage of the Roy Moore allegations

$

Roy Moore

  • Some advertisers are removing their ads from Sean Hannity's Fox News show in response to his coverage of the sexual-misconduct allegations against Roy Moore, the Republican US Senate candidate in Alabama.
  • The list of advertisers includes Keurig, Cadillac, AARP, and Nature's Bounty, among others.

The Fox News host Sean Hannity is facing heat after several brands pulled their ads from his show.

A wave of advertisers announced they would pull spots from "Hannity" following the host's interview on Friday with Roy Moore in which they discussed allegations that Moore engaged in sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old and pursued relationships with other teenagers when he was in his 30s.

Some media observers have noted that Hannity directly asked about the allegations. But critics say Hannity went too easy on Moore — whom he supported in the Alabama Senate primary — saying he appeared to agree with a characterization of some of the conduct as "consensual."

Amid the left-wing media watchdog Media Matters urging sponsors to pull ads, Keurig, Realtor.com, Eloquii, 23andMe, Nature's Bounty, and E-Trade all announced over the weekend that they had no plans to advertise on Hannity's Fox News show.

More recently, brands such as Mercedes-Benz have jumped on the bandwagon, even as others such as MyPillow remain unfazed.

Brands distancing themselves from politically or otherwise sensitive issues is nothing new. Several big-name advertisers were conspicuously absent from Megyn Kelly's interview in June with Alex Jones, the right-wing provocateur and conspiracy-monger.

Similarly, in April, BMW, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Lexus were among the brands that pulled their ads from "The O'Reilly Factor" amid a wave of sexual-harassment allegations against its host, Bill O'Reilly.

There has also been increasing consumer backlash to brands taking positions.

But these emotional reactions are unprecedented, according to Canvs, a company that measures viewers' qualitative responses to content. It looks at all the spoken words about shows across social media and maps viewers' reactions with a range of 42 emotions.

"Unlike most emotional conversations about TV, brands have been raised to the forefront of the discussion surrounding 'Hannity,'" a Canvs analyst told Business Insider. "These brand-driven viewer emotional reactions are really unprecedented when you look at any show on TV."

Still, Hannity has seen his ratings jump since Fox News moved him to a different time slot last month. He was already one of the highest-rated personalities in cable news.

He has also weathered previous boycott calls by Media Matters, partially by rallying his viewers and supporters, who started a #BoycottKeurig campaign over the weekend and shared videos of themselves destroying the coffee machines.

On Monday, Realtor.com deleted an initial tweet about pulling the ads, and Keurig's CEO apologized for "taking sides."

"The action is key because that is what will have a financial effect on Hannity's show, not the messaging that companies use," said Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters.

Carusone added that he was surprised that Realtor.com made a statement at all, considering the company is owned by Fox News' chairman, Rupert Murdoch.

Business Insider asked several other brands who have advertised on Hannity's show over the past few months about their stances and whether they plan to do so in the future.

Here are their responses:

Hebrew National announced on Monday it was no longer advertising on Hannity's show.

Hebrew National stated it had removed Hannity's show from its advertising plans on Monday afternoon.

"Our advertising is not intended to be an endorsement of or sponsorship of any particular program," the hot dog brand posted on Twitter.

Reddi-wip and Marie Callender's — two other Conagra brands — also cut advertising.

A spokesperson from Conagra Brands told Business Insider on Monday that the company had "removed Hannity from our advertising plans for all Conagra brands."

On Tuesday, a spokesperson clarified that the change had been made prior to the Hannity flap.

"We adjusted our media spend several months ago due to the needs of our business," spokesperson Lanie Friedman said. "That said, we have not run on this program since August, so our decision was not made currently and has nothing to do with this controversy."

Keurig says it will no longer advertise

Keurig said on Twitter that it would no longer advertise on Hannity's show.

Many on the right called for Hannity's supporters to boycott Keurig. On Sunday, some people went as far as posting videos of themselves smashing their Keurig coffee machines.

In a memo to employees on Monday, obtained by The Washington Post's Erik Wemple, CEO Bob Gamgort called Keurig's decision to explain its plan to "pause" its advertising with Hannity's show "highly unusual" and "outside of company protocols."

"This gave the appearance of 'taking sides' in an emotionally charged debate that escalated on Twitter and beyond over the weekend, which was not our intent," Gamgort wrote.

A win by Roger Federer during the ATP World Tour Finals in London pushed his career earnings past $110 million, surpassing Tiger Woods as the all-time highest-paid athlete in an individual sport.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion is one of the most successful players of all time. He has won the men's singles tournament at Wimbledon alone eight times since 2003, as well as 24 Masters Tournaments all over the world.

The 35-year-old is not only one of the most talented athletes on the planet, but also the most profitable. Forbes named him the world's highest-paid tennis player in 2016, earning £54.3 million ($68 million) from professional wins and million-pound sponsorship deals with companies from Nike to Credit Suisse.

In 2016, the London School of Marketing named him the world's most marketable athlete and, while the Swiss sports star leads a relatively private life compared to wealthier athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Federer also spends his money on the finer things in life. He also owns his own charity, the Roger Federer Foundation, which supports educational projects in southern Africa and Switzerland.

From tailored tennis rackets to Swiss mansions, here's how Federer makes and spends his fortune — and his minimal spare time.

This is 35-year-old Roger Federer, the highest-paid tennis player in the world. He has an estimated net worth of £255.9 million ($320 million).

He won the Australian Open on Sunday, beating long-time rival Rafael Nadal after six months out of the game due to injury. The victory awarded him more than £2.2 million.

His success trails back to the age of eight, when he started playing tennis. Born in Basel, Switzerland on August 8, 1981, his Swiss father, Robert Federer, and South African mother, Lynette Du Rand, encouraged him to play sport at an early age.

His parents both worked for the same pharmaceutical company.

Cam Newton

As the NFL season begins to enter the home stretch, the league is a tale of two conferences.

Of our top five teams in this week's Power Ranking, four come from the NFC, where the playoff picture is packed tight and bound to leave a few teams disappointed at the end of the season.

On the other side of the spectrum sits this AFC, where aside from the Patriots and Steelers, it appears any team can beat any other on Sundays. There's still time for teams like the Raiders and Ravens to make a run at the postseason, and still plenty of games left for the Chiefs to fall short after their hot start.

Check out where each teams stands heading into Week 11.

32. Cleveland Browns

Record: 0-9

Last week: Lost to the Lions, 38-24

This week: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

One thing to know: DeShone Kizer was playing one the best games of his career when he got hurt in the 4th quarter with the score tied. Cody Kessler replaced him for three drives, all of which ended in punts, and then Kizer returned for a final drive that ended in an interception. Such is life for the Browns.

31. New York Giants

Record: 1-8

Last week: Lost to the 49ers, 31-21

This week: vs. Kansas City Chiefs

One thing to know: The Giants defense has let up 82 points over the past two weeks — not a great vote of confidence for head coach Ben McAdoo, who appears on his way out the door.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Record: 3-6

Last week: Beat the Jets, 15-10

This week: at Miami Dolphins

One thing to know: The 15 points the Bucs scored in Week 10 against the Jets marked their most potent offensive game in three games.
