At least 40% of the world's power will come from renewable sources by 2040 — here are the companies leading the charge

Abengoa Solar Power Farm

The explosive growth of renewable energy has shaken up the energy industry over the last decade.

As the costs of solar and wind continue to fall and bottlenecks like storage capacity are diminished, the International Energy Agency predicts that renewable energy will comprise 40% of global power generation by 2040. In the next five years, the share electricity generated by renewables worldwide is set to grow faster than any other source.

Last week, Thomson Reuters released its inaugural Energy 100 list, which evaluates companies in the sector (both traditional and renewable) based on eight criteria, including innovation, environmental impact, social responsibility, and risk management. The top companies go "beyond the balance sheet," according to the report — in addition to their solid financials, they have created advanced sustainability programs, developed groundbreaking technologies, and benefited their surrounding communities.

Thomson Reuters created a sub-list of the top 25 renewable energy companies, which are generally smaller and younger than the energy giants on the main list. Eight of them are based in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.

Here are the top 13 renewable energy companies in the world:

SEE ALSO: Investors who 'couldn't care less' about clean energy are giving money to this solar finance firm

1) Canadian Solar Inc is one of the three biggest solar companies in the world by revenue.

Based in Toronto, Canadian Solar has developed a high-efficiency solar panel that the company says is more reliable than competing technology and works in a wider range of temperatures.

Canadian Solar has reduced its amount of carbon dioxide emitted per megawatt of electricity generated by 42% since 2012, according to the company's most recent Corporate Sustainability Report.

Canadian Solar also has an ongoing initiative to replace kerosene lamps in sub-Saharan Africa with solar-powered lights and has donated solar panels to Virunga National Park in Rwanda — a UNESCO World Heritage site, and home to endangered mountain gorillas — to phase out the use of diesel in the park.

2) CropEnergies AG is the leading European manufacturer of sustainably-produced biofuels.

CropEnergies, based in Mannheim, Germany, makes fuels out of renewable crops. Such biofuels, like CropEnergies' bioethanol, emit less carbon dioxide than gasoline or diesel.

CropEnergies had a knockout 2017, increasing revenue by 31%, according to company documents.

3) First Solar Inc is an Arizona-based manufacturer of solar panels.

First Solar has installations across the globe. The company's thin-film panels have approximately half the carbon footprint of traditional solar panel installations.

First Solar says its technology emits 89-98% less greenhouse gas compared to traditional methods of electricity generation.

victorias secret fashion show angels

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is one of the biggest events of the year in the modeling world. Although the show features plenty of models, only 14 of them hold the coveted title of a Victoria's Secret Angel.

These models often get several endorsement deals and high-profile ad campaigns as a result of their Angel status, which has landed six of this year's Angels on Forbes' list of The World's Highest-Paid Models of 2016.

Here's a look at which each of these Angels earned last year before they strut their wings on this year's catwalk.

Jasmine Tookes — $4 million

Jasmine Tookes has been with the Victoria's Secret family since 2012, and officially earned her wings in 2015. She has since landed deals with Lancome and Calvin Klein, which helped earn the 26-year-old $4 million in 2016.

Taylor Hill — $4 million

21-year-old Taylor Hill received her Angel wings in 2015, and has already generated a huge following on Instagram with 9.2 million followers at the time of this post. Her campaign with Topshop helped her earn $4 million in 2016.

Lily Aldridge — $4 million

Lily Aldridge also made $4 million in 2016. Her lucrative deals with brands like Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger have made her one of the highest paid models in the world. The 32-year-old model made her first appearance in the show in 2009 and quickly became an official Angel the following year.

The best Christmas tree stands you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

tree stands 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The best Christmas tree stands are designed to last for many decades, have a stable base that holds plenty of water, are easy to set up, and store easily after the holidays are over. The Krinner Tree Genie Christmas Tree Stand is the best one you can buy, thanks to its innovative design.

As a youngster, getting the stand on the Christmas tree was always a traumatic experience. My father was in charge of the heavy lifting, and I was tasked with fitting the unnecessarily complicated stand on the trunk and securing it. There's nothing like getting into the holiday spirit with a little bit of anger.

These days, companies have simplified things. Sure, there are still stands out there that will lead to family arguments and animosity, but the best Christmas tree stands are effortlessly installed in a minute or two. They also have a sufficient reservoir to accommodate enough water for a few days, so you can take off for a weekend ski trip.

When shopping for the right Christmas tree stand, there are a few specifications you must take note of. Most importantly, how large of a tree will the stand accommodate? If you like to make full use of your vaulted ceiling with a large real tree, make sure you can fit your 12-foot-tall tree in the stand base. Likewise, artificial trees generally have skinny poles that will only fit in specific models. We make it clear what type and size of tree are best for each stand.

We read through hundreds of buyer and expert reviews and ratings to come up with the best Christmas tree stands you can buy. The stands we chose to include in this guide exhibit consistent performance, durability, and were easy to set up with minimal instructions.

Read on in the slides below to learn why the Krinner Tree Genie Christmas Tree Stand is our top pick and why you should also consider the Jack-Post Welded Steel Christmas Tree Stand, the National Tree Folding Tree Stand, the Good Tidings Cinco Tabletop Christmas Tree Stand, and the Cinco C Express Tree Stand.

The best Christmas tree stand overall

Why you'll love it: The German-engineered Krinner Tree Genie Christmas Tree Stand is easy to set up in a couple minutes and keeps trees up to twelve feet tall secure.

What sets the Krinner Tree Genie apart from other Christmas tree stands is the five-claw design that holds the tree’s trunk in place. The claws are connected by a single cable that allows the claws to apply equal pressure around the trunk whether it is thin, crooked, or thick.

To secure the trunk, you put the tree in the base and tighten the cable using the foot pedal ratchet. The foot pedal stays in place, thanks to a security lock that prevents unintentional opening of the cable.

The Tree Genie XXL stand has a 20-inch diameter and is made of a plastic resin. It weighs approximately eighteen pounds without water. The base holds 2.5 gallons and features a water level indicator that tells you when to refill the water. The Tree Genie L has an 18-inch diameter, weighs thirteen pounds, holds a gallon of water, and accommodates trees up to eight feet tall.

The experts almost universally agree that the Krinner Tree Genie is the top stand on the market. The Sweethome (now Wirecutter) has picked it as the best Christmas tree stand for four years in a row because of its one-of-a-kind design that is versatile, secure, and easy to set up. WRAL, a new station in North Carolina, posted an in-depth test of the tree. The reviewers found it had no trouble supporting a twelve-foot tree and required minimal effort to set up. Galt Technology called it the most convenient tree stand because it was easy to assemble and “install” the tree.

More than 700 of the reviewers of the Krinner Tree Genie on Amazon gave it five stars. Buyers have reported using the Tree Genie XXL for trees as tall as fourteen feet. They like how quickly they can put the stand on the tree (under two minutes in some cases.)

One of the known issues is occasional small cracks in the bottom of the stand. However, Krinner does an excellent job of troubleshooting problems and often replaces damaged items, though the company does not have a clearly-stated warranty.

Pros: Quick and easy setup, excellent customer support, stable base, 2.5-gallon reservoir (for the XXL)

Cons: The base may crack and leak, expensive

Buy the Krinner Tree Genie Christmas Tree Stand on Amazon for $193.99 (XXL) or $129.99 (XXL Deluxe)

Buy the Krinner Tree Genie L Christmas Tree Stand on Amazon for $88.54

Buy the Krinner's Tree Genie M Christmas Tree Stand on Amazon for $81.95

The best screw-in Christmas tree stand

Why you'll love it: The Jack-Post Welded Steel Christmas Tree Stand is made of steel and features four eye-bolts that hold trees up to twelve feet tall in place.

Jack-Post manufactures tree stands in Asia and Michigan under a variety of brand names. The Welded Steel Christmas Tree Stand is the most heavy-duty option coming with its lifetime warranty and wide leg span of nearly 30 inches (for the large version). The base and the hollow legs of the stand are made out of steel, and the four T-nut tipped eye bolts are made of corrosion-resistant zinc dichromate.

This tree stand comes in medium and large sizes. The medium fits trees up to eight feet tall or trunks up to 4.25 inches in diameter, and the water capacity is 1.1 gallons. On the other hand, the large style holds trees as tall as twelve feet or with trunks up to seven inches thick, and the water reservoir holds 1.7 gallons.

Best Reviews included the Jack-Post model in its list of the best Christmas tree stands because the reviewers liked how it handled trees ten feet tall and larger. However, the stand lost points because the washers can get stuck inside the tree when you disassemble the unit. The Tree Stand rated this product 9.1 out of 10 because it is rust resistant, sturdy and durable, has a large water reservoir, and comes with a lifetime warranty. The10Pro also liked the metal bowl that keeps the tree steady and firm.

Around 78% of the people who reviewed the Jack-Post Welded Steel Christmas Tree Stand on Amazon gave it five stars. Buyers like how firmly this stand holds the tree in place. Also, setting up this unit can be done in a matter of minutes. Buyers were also impressed with how the stand does not rely on plastic pieces. Everything is made of sturdy metal.

One reviewer noted that when you are done with this model at the end of the year, you should take the time to clean and dry the stand, then lubricate the screws with WD40 or some similar product.

Pros: Lifetime warranty, made of durable steel, stable

Cons: Issues with parts digging in and sticking in tree

Buy the Jack-Post Welded Steel Christmas Tree Stand on Amazon for $56.32 (Medium) or $72.15 (Large)

The best Christmas tree stand for artificial trees

Why you'll love it: The National Tree Folding Tree Stand keeps your artificial tree stable and folds up after the holidays are over for easy storage.

The National Tree Folding Tree Stand comes in six sizes with the most popular sizes being the 16-inch leg span (accommodates trees 4 to 6 feet tall), 24-inch (6.5- to 8-foot trees), 28-inch (7.5- to 8-foot trees), and 32-inch leg span (for 9- to 10-foot trees). The stand holds artificial trees with center poles of about 1.25 inches in diameter. The tree stays in place thanks to a thumb screw. The stand is made of sturdy steel and weighs about two pounds. The legs fold flat for easy storage.

Best Reviews included the National Tree Company stand in its look at the best Christmas tree stands because of the small footprint afforded by the folding design. However, the reviewers didn’t like that the locking mechanism sometimes snaps off. The Tree Stand liked this model because of its durability and stability. Top Guide Pro appreciated that it was easy to adjust and store.

Almost 300 reviewers of the National Tree Folding Tree Stand on Amazon gave it four or five stars. The positive comments about this stand center on how stable it keeps the tree. We did not find any reports of trees falling over because of the stand.

The biggest issue buyers seem to have is they chose the wrong-sized stand for their needs. There are several options to choose from and each fits different-sized poles. You want the pole to fit snugly so it doesn’t slide through the stand and dig into your floor.

Pros: Easy to adjust, stable, foldable, several sizes to choose from

Cons: Only accommodates poles that are about 1.25-inch thick

Buy the National Tree Folding Tree Stand on Amazon for $16.80 to $29.99 (price varies by size)

Joe Biden is 75 — here's how a kid from Scranton became a senator, VP, and now a possible 2020 presidential contender

Joe Biden

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who turned 75 on Monday, said recently that he is "not closing the door" on running for the Democratic ticket in the 2020 presidential election.

He certainly has reason to be optimistic — throughout his eventful life and political career, Biden has overcome enormous obstacles to get to where he is today.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 20, 1942 to a used car salesman, Biden moved with his family to Mayfield, Delaware, when he was 13 years old. From the get-go, he faced many trials growing up, including bullies and an embarrassing stutter.

As he says his father taught him, "The measure of a man is not how often he is knocked down, but how quickly he gets up."

Throughout his long political trajectory, Biden has lived by his father's advice, and gotten back up after facing countless tragedies and challenges to achieve his political dreams.

Here's how a kid from Scranton became a respected Senator, Vice President, and now possible 2020 presidential contender:

51 enterprise startups to bet your career on in 2018

51 startups 2018

As we approach another holiday season and the year draws to a close, our thoughts will soon drift to our goals for 2018.

For those thinking of moving on to a new job at an up-and-coming young company, we've compiled this list to help.

All of these companies are "enterprise" startups, meaning they specialize in making tech for work and business use, a massive $3.7 trillion worldwide market. And all of them achieved milestones in 2017, setting themselves up for a successful 2018 and beyond.

We looked for one or more of the following elements: promising technology, healthy partnerships, experienced leadership and adequate funding. In other words, these companies have all the markings of long-term hits, or those likely to be snapped up by a bigger player for a hefty sum when the time is right.

Zapier: The plumbing that connects the internet

Name: Zapier
Headquarters: None
Funding to date: $1.3 million, otherwise profitable and self-funded

Zapier, which makes tools for connecting business software to other business software, is somewhat of an anomaly on this list.

It took a meager $1.3 million seed round when it was founded in 2012, but Zapier hasn't touched another dime of investor money since. That's because it's been profitable since 2014, and hit a $20 million annualized run rate by 2017.

On top of that, Zapier doesn't have a headquarters. Instead, its team of around 85 people is entirely remote, working from their own homes all over the globe. Earlier this year, Zapier made headlines when it announced it would actually pay $10,000 in moving expenses for employees to leave the San Francisco Bay Area. the opposite of how it normally works.

Maybe it's no coincidence that "Zapier" rhymes with "happier."

Smyte: Bringing Facebook's trust and safety features to a broader audience

Company name: Smyte
Headquarters: San Francisco
Funding to date: $6.25 million in 3 rounds

Smyte is the trust and safety feature startup you've never heard of but definitely want to have on your side.

Despite being just two years old, and early in its fundraising, Smyte has already landed customers like Indiegogo, GoFundMe, Medium, and Task Rabbit, who all have used its machine learning technology to catch everything from e-commerce fraud to space, scams, bots and harassers.

The company's success can be attributed in part to its all-star cast of tech veterans. The founding trio has resumes from Facebook, Instagram and Google.

Cofounder CEO Pete Hunt is also one of the well-known fathers of a popular tool for programmers that came out of Facebook called React

Fetch Robotics: Creating the warehouse robots of tomorrow

Company name: Fetch Robotics
Headquarters: San Jose, California
Funding to date:$23 million in 2 rounds

Fetch is a leader in what's known as "warehouse optimization" which attempts to create the perfect mix of human and robotic workers, each doing what they do best to make warehouses as efficient as possible.

There's never been a bigger need for Fetch's robots. As online retailers takeover the role of brick and mortar storefronts, companies face new challenges in quickly getting products out the door.

Fetch specializes in autonomous warehouse technology that works with humans to move cargo around quickly. It's like autonomous vehicles for moving boxes.

Fetch's CEO Melonee Wise, who joined in 2014, is a legend in the robotics industry. She was an early employee at Willow Garage, a now-defunct startup that helped launch the current renaissance in robotics.

kohl's amazon return

  • A new program makes it possible to return Amazon orders at Kohl's
  • The returns are free, but your items must be eligible under Amazon's guidelines, which you should check before you go.
  • Select Kohl's stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas have launched the program, so we decided to check it out.

In September, Kohl's and Amazon announced a partnership that would make returning items bought on Amazon more convenient.

Eighty-two Kohl's stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas have set up pop-up stores where customers can shop from a selection of Amazon devices and return any Amazon orders for free. These return centers accept any merchandise that's eligible under Amazon's guidelines, which you can check on your Amazon account.

We tested the service at a Kohl's store in Torrance, California. Here's how it worked:

For the sake of the experiment, I ordered a $9.99 clip for a Fitbit One. I had several options for shipping it, or I could pick it up at the Amazon@Westwood location. Short on time, I opted for the $3.99 one-day shipping.

When I was ready to return it, I had a few different options. Dropping it off at Kohl's for shipping is free, but you must designate this type of return on your account before heading to the store.

After I selected "Kohl's Dropoff," the screen showed me a Kohl's store about 10 miles away from my location. There are closer Kohl's stores, but the Amazon returns program doesn't currently include every location.

6 signs you're being sexually harassed at work and might not realize it

0

sexual harassment boss office

  • It's not always easy to discern innocent workplace behavior from sexual harassment.
  • Sexual harassment can include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature, but it doesn't always.
  • Use these subtle signs to to discern exactly what qualifies as sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment, especially when it's happening to you or around you, isn't always so clear-cut and obvious.

According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, sexual harassment can include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.

But it doesn't have to be of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment can also include offensive remarks about a person's sex.

And for the harassment to be considered unlawful, it has to be so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or results in an adverse employment decision, like the victim being fired or demoted.

While these parameters are helpful, it can be difficult when you're in such a situation to discern exactly what qualifies as sexual harassment.

When an issue is taken to court, for example, some courts determined that something is harassment using the standard of what a "reasonable person" would consider unwelcome and sexual, whereas other courts have used the standard of what a "reasonable woman" considers harassing when the victim is female, ABC News reports.

By these standards, sexual harassment is very much in the eye of the beholder.

As Daley Haggar, a comedy writer in Los Angeles, recently wrote in Lenny Letter, "Being sexually harassed by a sitcom writer is like being sexually harassed by your gynecologist. It can be hard to tell if the guy's being a pervert or just doing his job."

Of course, it's not just comedy writers who have a hard time discerning innocent workplace behavior from sexual harassment. The signs can be subtle. Which is why we've compiled some below:

SEE ALSO: Sexual harassment isn't an industry, workplace, or company issue — in fact, it affects nearly everyone

DON'T MISS: Gretchen Carlson says the way we handle sexual harassment 'gags' the women who confront it

You experience behavior of a sexual nature that makes you uncomfortable

Ellen Bravo, who directs Family Values @ Work, a network of state coalitions working for family-friendly policies, told Business Insider sexual comments or requests that you find unwanted or offensive and inappropriate touching are the first sign of sexual harassment.

Bravo, who has extensive experience writing and training on the subject of sexual harassment, including co-authoring "The 9 to 5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment" and authoring "Again and Again," a novel about date rape, said that this can include a number of scenarios.

For example, if someone:

· Stands too close and talks in an intimate way.

· Keeps looking at or commenting on your body in a way that makes you uncomfortable. There's a difference between saying "nice dress" and "that dress really shows off your curves."

· Asks you about your personal life, including your romantic or sexual experiences.

· Insists on talking about their own sexual experiences.

· Keeps trying to get you to meet alone outside of work.

· Shows you pornographic materials or tries to get you to talk about a sexually-charged movie or song or other such topic.

"The best guideline is the 'uh-oh' feeling," Bravo said. "You think the person knows they are making you uncomfortable and is enjoying that power over you."

You're unable to make it stop

"If you've tried various ways to say, 'I don't like this and don't want to participate, hear it, or be treated this way,' but the individual does not stop the behavior," Bravo says this is a clear indicator.

According to the EEOC, simple teasing, off-hand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious are not unlawful. But when it's become so chronic or severe that the behavior creates a hostile or offensive work environment or results in an adverse work event, that's unlawful.

You feel pressured to go along with it

"Either explicitly or implicitly, you feel you do not have permission to avoid or end the behavior," Bravo said. "You may be told that the harasser is a rainmaker and that you need to avoid him."

20 states where owning a mansion won't actually cost you a fortune

Mansions are defined by the National Association of Realtors as residences with more than 8,000 square feet of floor space. Want one? Well, where you live has a lot to do with whether you can afford to live big. In fact, you can own a genuine, bona fide mansion for less than a million bucks in much of the country.

GOBankingRates compiled a list of states where mansions cost the least by examining the state median price per square foot, according to Realtor.com. Click through to discover the best states to live for high-end homeowners on a budget.

20. Georgia

Price per sq. foot: $85
Price of 8,000-square-foot mansion: $680,000

The cost of living in Georgia is 8.6% lower than the national average, and that's mostly thanks to low housing costs, which are nearly 25% cheaper than the national average. If prospective mansion owners want to live in the state's most expensive ZIP code, which is in Atlanta, they'll have to earn nearly $144,000 a year, a GOBankingRates study found.

If you're a little light, $300,000 will buy you 3,020 square feet — enough for a two-story home with a floating boat ramp in the coastal town of Waverly, Ga.

19. Alaska

Price per sq. foot: $84
Price of 8,000-square-foot mansion: $672,000

The price of living in a mansion in Alaska is less than $85 per square foot. There are, however, few other financial perks to the largest state in America.

For example, the cost of living there is nearly 32% above the national average. The good news for homeowners — even mansion owners — is that it's one of the places where it's cheaper to own a home than to rent, according to a GOBankingRates study.

18. Iowa

Price per sq. foot: $84
Price of 8,000-square-foot mansion: $672,000

The cost of living in Iowa is significantly lower than the national average. That's largely thanks to cheap housing — home costs are nearly 19% lower there than in the nation as a whole. That pattern holds true even for the state's elite — you can live comfortably in the state's most expensive ZIP code for less than $75,000.

5 signs that it's time to get rid of your bra and invest in a new one

30 rock

It’s difficult to let go of a favorite bra. Like a good friend, it offers you comfort and support when you need it most. Plus, finding one bra you actually like is such a long process, it’s easy to hold onto those that fit you well for a little too long.

If you’re anything like me, bras are in regular duty until the underwire pops out, and even then they might get a few more uses. (Tip: put duct tape over the wire to prevent scratches.) Putting up with almost any other garment for so long would be almost unthinkable.

But there are a few reasons why we hold on. For starters, bras are really expensive. In 2016, the worldwide market for bras was valued at over $16 billion, with North America and Europe making up nearly 70 percent of that total. Plus, shopping for bras can be an ordeal, too. Even if you try to get professional advice, it’s possible to get a different size every time you go to a bra fitting. The whole thing can be majorly frustrating, and make you want to get every second of usefulness out of the bras that already line your lingerie drawer.

However, bras do have a shelf life. To find out whether your most beloved boulder holder needs to go, review these tips.

Your bra is super uncomfortable

Sure, sometimes people put on clothes for formal events, or just for fun, that are not the most comfortable. For daily wear, though, there’s no need to feel uncomfortable in your own undergarments. So if for whatever reason you straight-up hate a bra — maybe the straps cut into your shoulders, or the band is way too tight — feel free to chuck it.

Do you keep ending up with annoying fitting bras no matter what you do? It happens. Knowing how to make sure a bra fits properly the next time you’re bra shopping can help you avoid the usual mistakes.

Your bra is more than 8 months old

It turns out bras that are worn even once a week have a relatively short shelf life.

“When worn correctly and taken care of correctly, a bra is going to last you about eight months,”  bra fitting specialist Bobbie Smith told HuffPost. “After that, the band is stretched out, so it’s not going to support you anymore.” Once that support is gone, the bra is no longer performing its duty.

In reality, many women hang on to their bras for much, much longer. So if the idea of tossing a bra before it’s even broken in makes you queasy, you’re not alone. In fact, a 2016 survey of 2,000 US women found 30% of women have a bra that’s over 10 years old in their regular wardrobe, according to lingerie company Rigby & Peller. If your old favorite seems to be holding up fine after a few more months of wear, then keep on rocking it.

Your bra is bent out of shape

Are those formerly round cups looking kind of oblong lately? It’s probably time to retire that bra. If the padding shifts around or ripples, then the bra is no longer doing its job, according to Good Housekeeping. After all, the whole point of undergarments is to smooth and support, not buckle and wrinkle.

my so called life

  • Xennials are a 'micro-generation' born between 1977 and 1985.
  • This group has also been called the 'Oregon Trail Generation.'
  • Xennials may have been hit hardest by the recession, because of a combination of student loan debt, job losses, and other factors.

It's hard not fitting in.

If you feel sort-of-but-not-quite like a millennial, and sort-of-but-not-quite like a Gen X-er, take heart: You might just be a Xennial. That's a term for the "micro-generation" born between 1977 and 1985.

The term was coined in 2014, by Sarah Stankorb in Good Magazine. Recently, people have started talking about Xennials again, with self-proclaimed members of this demographic waxing (read: tweeting) nostalgic about Oregon Trail and flip phones. Merriam-Webster even labeled "xennial" one of its "words we're watching."

Below, Business Insider has outlined the defining characteristics of Xennials, and how they're different from the generations that came before and after them.

Tech stocks have been on fire this year, and institutional investors have taken note.

According to data from Citi’s equity research group, tech stocks made up eight of the top 10 stocks held by the 50 largest hedge funds in the third quarter of 2017, with financials and healthcare close behind.

Despite the astronomic gains of stocks like Alphabet and Facebook, the aggregated Equity Hedge Fund Index has underperformed the the S&P 500 by 8.6 percentage points so far this year, Citi says. Hedge fund managers have also shifted away from less exciting sectors, like industrial stocks.

"Compared with last quarter, hedge fund top-10 holdings shifted away from Industrial and Utility names toward Information Technology, Consumer Discretionary and Materials stocks" writes Citi analyst Tobias Levkovich. "Additionally, hedge funds favored positions in ETFs and Energy in the third quarter while there was a decline in Financials, Telecommunication Services and Consumer Staples holdings."

We went to the world’s most famous boxing gym, where Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and countless celebrities have trained — take a look inside

GleasonsTour (20 of 39)

  • Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, New York is arguably the world's most famous boxing gym, having trained everyone from Muhammad Ali to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
  • Anyone can train at Gleason's Gym — most of the members today are regular New Yorkers learning how to box
  • Gleason's is one of New York City's "last true melting pots," according to owner Bruce Silverglade

To call Gleason's Gym in New York City a "mecca" of boxing is an understatement.

Nearly every major boxer over the last half-century either learned how to box at Gleason's or trained there in advance of one fight or another. Legendary fighters like Muhammad Ali, Roberto Duran, and Mike Tyson — along with current boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr. — have all trained at Gleason's.

Since the gym opened in 1937, Gleason's has helped 134 world champions reach their peak.  In 2016, the gym moved a few blocks from its long-time home at 77 Front Street in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood to a new location.

We visited recently to see if it's still full of the sweat and grime that has long marked the gym as a true New York landmark.

Gleason's Gym is located at 130 Water Street in Brooklyn's trendy DUMBO neighborhood. The gym first moved to the neighborhood in 1985. It was a ghost town at the time.

Gleason's may be in a new building with fresh coats of its signature red paint, but it has retained its gritty vibe. "Boxing is a sport of the underclass, a sport of the underdog," according to owner Bruce Silverglade.

Head into the back and you'll find Silverglade's office. He has helped run the business since 1983. The original owner was Peter Robert Gagliardi, an Italian boxer who wanted to open a gym in an Irish section of the Bronx.

victoria's secret clas of 2017The annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took place on Monday in Shanghai, China. The pre-recorded event will be televised on CBS on November 28 at 10 p.m. ET, though there's a way you can watch it online for free.

Although preparations for the runway show haven't exactly gone smoothly — with Gigi Hadid dropping out and reported visa issues making it impossible for models and performers like Katy Perry to attend — the show indeed went on.

Before you can watch it live, here's a preview of the fashion show featuring newcomers like Estelle Chen and Angels like Adriana Lima, and all the stunning outfits they wore to walk down the runway.

  • The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show has been happening for 22 years.
  • The show has evolved to feature huge wings, major sets, and top models.
  • See pictures from its 22-year history.

In 1995, a lingerie company called Victoria's Secret had its first fashion show at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Models wore slinky slips down the runway, accessorized with cardigans and handbags.

Two decades later, 6.6 million people tune in to watch the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on CBS. This year, it will premiere on November 28 at 10 p.m. EST and the outfits of 2017 are a far cry from what they were 22 years ago. Brightly colored costumes and huge wings now grace the runway, making the beige satin bras of yesteryear look oddly quaint.

Get ready for Thanksgiving with the 10 best cooking channels on YouTube

0

The biggest food holiday of the year is nearly upon us!

thanksgiving_naito8

With just a few days to go until Thanksgiving, I've been practicing my annual tradition of marathon-watching cooking shows as inspiration. Unlike years past where I might've tuned in to the Food Network or some such, these days all the best cooking shows are online.

Whether you're Binging with Babish, watching Matty Matheson scream around a kitchen, or going traditional with Julia Child, there are plenty of great options on YouTube right now to get you ready for the big day.

These are my favorites!

SEE ALSO: Here's how many calories the average person eats on Thanksgiving — and how you can eat less without thinking about it

1. Food Wishes

Chef John's Food Wishes is my personal favorite YouTube channel about cooking. Not only does he have years of experience with cooking, but he's a hilariously quirky man.

Moreover, Chef John's been doing the YouTube thing longer than most in the game — his videos go back 10 years! Before that, he was doing the actual chef thing as John Mitzewich, working in kitchens for years and eventually teaching at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco.

His videos range from simple to complex, American comfort food to ancient Roman throwbacks. And yes, of course, he has a ton of Thanksgiving recipe ideas and techniques for you to gobble down.

Here's a direct link to Chef John's Thanksgiving playlist.

And here's Chef John's main turkey video, aimed directly at first-time turkey roasters:

2. Matty Matheson (and Munchies in general)

Matty Matheson is abrasive and loud and he swears a lot, which is exactly what makes him so delightful. He's the punk rock chef the internet needs.

Maybe you've seen him on his excellent, often ridiculous show, "Keep It Canada." Or maybe you've seen him on his newer show, "Dead Set On Life." Before he was doing any of that stuff, he was making excellent how-to videos for Vice's food publication, Munchies.

Matty was a working chef for years before he became a food star on YouTube (and now, on TV, with Viceland). He brings years of professional experience to his lessons, and his presentation is unlike anyone else before him in food programming.

Check out his how-to videos on Munchies right here.
