How The Hindenburg Disaster Changed Aviation History [PHOTOS]

Hindenburg

Seventy-six years ago, on May 6, 1937, Nazi Germany's prized LZ-129 Hindenburg airship crashed and burned in Lakehurst, New Jersey, creating this iconic photo.

The disaster, which was caused by static electricity, claimed 36 lives and proved embarrassing for the Nazis, who used the ship as an example of their engineering skills and a propaganda machine.

But it had a more significant impact: The Hindenburg disaster led directly to the end of the era of the airship.

Named after German President Paul von Hindenburg, the airship was huge — three times the length a modern Boeing 747.

(Source)

For the Nazis, it was not just a feat of engineering, but a propaganda vehicle — the country had just begun to occupy the demilitarized Ruhr Valley when the ship made its debut in 1936.

(Source)

After just a few test flights, Nazi propaganda boss Dr. Joseph Goebbels ordered the airship to fly to every major German city to drop Nazi campaign pamphlets and to blare patriotic music.

0

Gatton Academy

Newsweek and The Daily Beast recently released their list of the best high schools in America.

Though there are many ways to rank high schools, they focused on finding schools that best prepare their students for college.

They looked at over 2,500 public high schools around the country, and factored in graduation rates, participation in college-level classes via Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, and acceptance into a two- or four-year college program for the 2011-2012 school year.

We pulled out the top 10 schools from their list. Nearly all of these schools see 100% of their students graduate and then go on to college.

#10 Stanton College Preparatory School

Location:Jacksonville, Florida

Average SAT score: 1824

Average AP score: 2.7

Stanton College Prep dates back to the 1860s, when it was an elementary school for African-American students under the then-segregated education system. Today it's one of the best public high schools in the country, with a focus on teaching students "cultural understanding and responsible citizenship."

For reference, the highest possible SAT score is 2400 and the highest possible AP (Advanced Placement) score is 5.

#9 Suncoast Community High School

Location:Riviera Beach, Florida

Average SAT score: 1744

Average AP score: 2.9

Suncoast Community High School opened in 1989 as a magnet school. Students study in at least one of the school's four programs: Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE), Computer Science (CS), International Baccalaureate (IB), or the Innovative Interactive Technology Program (IIT).

For reference, the highest possible SAT score is 2400 and the highest possible AP (Advanced Placement) score is 5.

#8 Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

Location:Alexandria, Virginia

Average SAT score: 2153

Average AP score: 4.5

This publicly-funded charter school is incredibly selective, with a difficult admissions process. The curriculum focuses primarily on math, science, and technology, but it also teaches literature, music, the arts, and humanities.

For reference, the highest possible SAT score is 2400 and the highest possible AP (Advanced Placement) score is 5.

Astounding 'Mask' Artwork From Combat Veterans Uncovers America's Invisible Wounds

Alcohol, violence, sex, suicide.

These are the outlets we hear most often about when the conversation touches on veterans and Post Traumatic Stress, but a few vets have actually turned to artwork as a way to express, and possibly surmount, their invisible wounds.

They made these masks at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

It was part of an art therapy group, and by the looks of it, these vets didn't hold anything back.

This mask was created by an Airman who was exposed to multiple blast injuries in combat while working on a bomb disposal unit, called EOD -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

The soldier who created this mask is suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The constant pressure of a vice symbolizes the pain he feels as a result of his injuries.

This mask, made by a wounded soldier, represents the feeling that he needs to camouflage himself to fit into civilian society. He said that art therapy was one of the few times he felt he could truly express himself.

10 Tips For Making Really Great Vine Videos

Weird dog vine

Vine, Twitter's new video-sharing app that launched this year, has quickly grown to be one of the most-downloaded apps on the iPhone

The app lets you take short video clips that play on a loop and share them in an Instagram-style news feed. Vine has opened up a bunch of neat community-generated trends on Vine from how-to videos to the new selfie shot.

You can download Vine for free here.

Shooting videos is pretty easy: you stitch clips together by pressing your finger on the screen to capture a segment and let go to stop. But shooting a good Vine is hard: The first few times you try it, you're likely to end up with a random six seconds of incoherent movement.

Here's a collection of common types of successful Vine videos you'll see along with some tips on how to shoot them.

You can take stop-motion videos on Vine by filming one shot at a time. It's easy: Set up your shot, then tap the screen once to capture the frame. Repeat the process until you've filled up your 6 seconds.

Using stop motion, you can also make it look like your subject is flying. The key is to take a quick shot as soon as your subject jumps in the air.

Vine recently added the ability to record clips with the iPhone's front-facing camera. Before recording, tap the looped arrow icon in the bottom left corner of your screen to switch on your front-facing camera. Now you can record an awesome selfie like this.

Ad Exec With Cancer, Given 'Two Weeks To Live,' Is Blogging His Life Lessons And Regrets

mike hughes the martin agencyFor almost two decades, Mike Hughes has had to come to terms with his own mortality.

The Martin Agency president was diagnosed with lung cancer in the 1990s.

Click here to skip to his lessons >

Back in January, Hughes was given "two weeks to live" by his doctors, but he's fighting on.

"When I got my diagnosis and was told there was an 85 percent chance I'd be dead within five years — I needed to make choices about both personal and business things,"Hughes told the graduating class at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010. That was the very same year a building at VCU's advertising and marketing school was renamed in Hughes' honor, he was named one of the 50 most influential creative thinkers in Creativity magazine, and the ad man was inducted into The One Club's creative hall of fame.

Hughes has continued to be active in the advertising community, even responding positively to younger people from small shops' requests to grab coffee and learn about the industry.

He also began a blog called "Unfinished Thinking" and a sister blog to chronicle his battle with cancer.

Poignant, heartbreaking, and inspiring, Hughes discusses facing death his wife Ginny's fight with cancer (although she was recently told she is in complete remission), regrets, life lessons, and celebration of life.

Martin Agency chief creative officer Joe Alexander also created a tribute website for Hughes called "We All Love Mike" complete with pictures of his life, celebrations of his creative work, and messages from his peers.

We have compiled his blog post on regrets in the industry and some of the life lessons he learned with pictures of his journey as an agency and family man.

It’s amazing how freeing being given a limited time frame can be. Everything on my “things to do today lists” is vanquished forever. ... Thank God I never saddled myself with a bucket list. Those lists are guilt-magnets. And now, poof… Gone forever. Good riddance.

I’m supposed to die tomorrow. Hope not. Two weeks ago, the doctors gave me two weeks to live. I’m pretty sure they’ll be proven wrong. In fact, I’m actually making plans now for next week. !!! A friend now in Ethiopia is planning to get here the end of next week. I told him to get here as soon as possible because I might have a funeral I have to attend at the end of the week. (Some people love that kind humor. Others, not so much.)

“How are you doing?” That’s the first question many people ask when they see me. They tell me how good I look, and then they ask, “How are you doing?” It’s a nice question to ask, but it’s a little tricky to answer. If I know someone has a great sense of humor, I might say, “Well, I’m dying.” But usually what I say is that for the condition I’m in, I’m doing pretty well. I mean that both physically and psychologically.

19 Reasons It's Horrible To Grow Up Gifted

0
0

chess player young kid

If you're born gifted, life is handed to you on a silver platter, right?

Not according to several Reddit users who answered the question, "[For those] labeled as gifted children, do you think the label harmed you, or helped you?"

Most said that the "free passes" and special treatment given in school and beyond are not worth the price of having above-average IQ. In fact, any complacency they enjoyed during their early years ended up hurting them later in life.

"I often feel like a huge failure and I can't look at my transcript without crying," writes one user. "I still consider myself extremely intelligent and capable but I can't push myself to do the work required to make straight As. Overall it's forced me to set an unreasonably high standard for myself."

We've pulled together some of the most interesting comments from the thread about why it's horrible to grow up gifted.

From an early age, you believe it's you vs. the world.

"You're suddenly looking around at the world and realizing that you're supposed to have some crazy work ethic at everything because YOU'RE gifted and THEY aren't. More is expected of YOU than THEM because of the big giant brain that YOU were given that THEY weren't. See a pattern there? There's this exclusivity complex there where it's an 'Us vs. Them' mentality."

(RaptarIsTheShit, Reddit)

You develop a superiority complex.

"When you've been told all your life that you're the smartest person in the room, you don't take orders from others very well, especially those who you don't find very bright (which, sadly, is most people)."

And that makes you arrogant.

"Harmed me. Made me an arrogant self-righteous prick, because I was taught for years that my classmates and I were smarter than all the rest of the school. I'm still trying to undo all that."

The Most Plugged-In Budget Analyst In America Gives A Great Crash Course On How The Government Spends Its Money

0

douglas elmendorf cbo

Douglas Elmendorf, the universally-respected budget analyst at the helm of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, gave a guest lecture to an intro economics course at Harvard University

Called  “A Tour of the Federal Budget and Possible Changes in Budget Policy,” it's an outstanding crash course in the changes the federal budget is undergoing.

The role of government has been shifting subtly for years, and Elmendorf more than many others has been able to perceive this change. Less government money is spent on contracts and employees, while more is given directly to people and states.

Elmendorf was kind enough to post a copy of the slide deck to Slideshare and the excellent CBO blog.

The final conclusion is guaranteed to make you wince.

Elmendorf is the Director of the Congressional Budget Office, which is tasked with analyzing the fiscal impact of new legislation.

As a result, Elemendorf might be the most plugged-in non-partisan person when it comes to budgetary issues.

The federal government is rather basic when it comes down to it. Spending can be broken into a few key blocks.

Sex On Memory Foam Feels Like 'Being Stuck In Quicksand,' Spring Mattress Maker Finds

0

woman jumping on bedNew "research" from Leggett & Platt, a major producer of spring mattresses, found that couples prefer spring mattresses for both sleeping and sex.

The study, titled SexySleep, asked 255 consumers to compare the company's "Ultimate Hybrid" mattress with fabric-encased springs against a traditional memory foam mattress by laying, crawling, rolling, and jumping on both.

The study also included interviews with 50 people who either owned a memory-foam mattress or "had experienced intimacy" on one.

Those who had done the latter described it as "uncomfortable,""difficult," and feeling as if they were "stuck in quicksand." They often opted to have sex less frequently, or would choose a different household location instead of their foam mattress, the mattress maker found.

The Hybrid also won in the sleep category as well, but who cares — sex sells.

18 Cringeworthy Pictures Of Rich People Trying To Look Like Punks

0

MG Julie Macklowe

Last night, the annual Met Gala asked its wealthy and famous guests to dress for the theme "Punk: Chaos to Couture."

Most of the party-goers — including Hollywood celebrities, fashion's elite, and power players — were totally stumped.

Some ignored the punk theme completely or tried to tastefully incorporate it in the form of spikes, leather, or mesh.

But a select few really took the idea and ran with it, for better or worse.

Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Shaffer looked decidedly not punk in floral and pink dresses. (Apparently, the color of punk is pink.)

Lisa Maria Falcone, the wife of hedge fund manager Phil Falcone, busted out of her bright yellow gown in a black bra (with safety pins) and matching gloves.

Designer Donatella Versace rocked the theme with mesh cut outs and lots of spikes.

The shoe is nuts-looking, but we kind of like it.

There are all sorts of colors and textures that give the it an asymmetric feel. It verges on gaudy (especially with those weird pendant things on the laces), and some people will be instantly turned off.

LeBron is never going to be able to touch the classic look of most Jordan sneakers, so he might as well go as wild as possible.

15 Reasons Ted Cruz Is The Most Badass And Fearless Senator Republicans Have Seen In Ages

0
0

AP289278165223It's been just four months since Ted Cruz took office as the junior Republican Senator from Texas, but the Tea Party darling has already challenged Washington to a fight — and gotten it.

Brash, borderline arrogant, but undeniably whipsmart, Cruz has rankled Democrats and delighted Republicans with his take-no-prisoners, make-no-compromises approach to legislating. His popularity has skyrocketed among a conservative base starved for excitement after enduring milquetoast moderates like Mitt Romney and John McCain.

"Republicans love him because he's honest, because he's not afraid to take on the Establishment," said Vincent Harris, a digital strategist who works with Cruz. "He's energetic and Republicans are just tired of people who are going along to get along — that is the antithesis of Senator Cruz."

"He's conservative and he's not afraid to talk about — and he's not afraid to even say and do things that people in the Beltway aren't used to," Harris added. "It's exciting and refreshing."

Democratic strategist James Carville called Cruz the most fearless and talented Republican in 30 years.

Already, rumors are circulating that Cruz is considering a presidential bid in 2016. That would be an audacious move for the young Senator, particularly considering questions about his eligibility. (Cruz was born in Canada.)

But a brief look at his past — and his rapid ascent to national political stardom — reveals that Cruz usually gets what he wants.

Cruz has always been a talker — at age 22, he was the best college debater in the country. And he's still in the Princeton debate Hall of Fame.

At age 32, he became the youngest state Solicitor General in U.S. history.

He's tight with Supreme Court conservatives.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Cruz clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Notably, he was the first Hispanic to ever clerk for a Chief Justice.

Later on, during the 2000 Florida recount, Cruz served as a legal advisor for the George Bush campaign, and recruited future Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to join the team.

And as Texas Solicitor General, he argued nine cases in front of the court, winning five.

FROTOX: A New Alternative To Botox Claims To Freeze Away Wrinkles

0

botox

There's a new plastic surgery treatment on the market that the beauty world is calling the next Botox, or "Frotox."

The treatment, called iovera, is a toxin-free wrinkle treatment currently available in Europe that takes 15 minutes and gives patients "cold shots to each temple,"according to The Daily Mail.

The way it works is through something called "Focused Cold Therapy:" Highly pressurized liquid nitrous oxide travels down an extremely thin, closed-end needle. At the needle tip, it changes into gaseous form which then draws in heat energy from the surrounding tissue to form a precise zone of cold.

Essentially, it freezes the nerves that control the muscles that cause wrinkles for up to four months.

Patients experience pressure rather than cold or pain, according to The Daily Mail, and the procedure is so precise it can target specific nerves, which means facial muscles can still form expressions after the procedure.

"Iovera is the world's first toxin-free anti-wrinkle treatment," Dr. Vincent Wond, who performs "Frotox" treatments at his UK practice, told The Daily Mail. "It's a unique stand-alone treatment in its own right and shouldn't be compared side-by-side with Botox or any botulinum toxins. Instead, we should think of it as an additional option available to people, especially those who do not want botulinum toxin injections or cannot have them due to medical reasons."

Others aren't as confident in the new procedure, claiming it's less predictable than Botox since doctors may not know which nerve will deliver the desired result.

"Frotox" currently costs €300 a session, or roughly $390 at today's conversion rates, and needs to be repeated every 3-4 months.

To put that in perspective, Botox typically costs $360-$770 a session depending on how many areas are injected, and needs to be repeated every 3-4 months as well.

The drug was undergoing clinical trials in the U.S. this fall, Boston's WCVB.com reported.

El Celler de Can Roca

Move over, Noma — El Celler de Can Roca is the new Best Restaurant in the World.

The restaurant in Girona, Spain took the top spot on The 2013 World's 50 Best list, released by Restaurant magazine. It was praised for its artistic parade of courses, superb wine selection, and mind-blowing desserts.

Of course, El Celler is no stranger to The World's 50 Best list. This is its eighth year in the top 50, and it took home second place in 2011 and 2012.

The Catalan, family-owned restaurant has been serving modern Spanish cuisine since it opened in 1986. The three Roca brothers, who run the critically-acclaimed establishment, split their duties between the kitchen and front of house.

The restaurant currently holds three Michelin stars, and has been compared to the former number one world restaurant El Bulli, which also served Catalan cuisine until it closed in 2011.

Flickr user Encantadisimo was lucky enough to dine at El Celler in 2011 and again in 2013. He shared pictures of his most recent experience with Business Insider, where he and a companion shared the "Menú Degustació de Classics," a seven-course tasting menu with the restaurant's most beloved dishes.

With the wine pairing, the meal cost $248 per person.

El Celler de Can Roca is in a suburban neighborhood in Girona, Spain.

Inside, the decor is airy and modern with glass walls and white table cloths.

9 Signs That Americans Will See Solar Power Everywhere Within The Decade

mars 18 acre solar garden new jersey

Last week, Massachusetts announced it had reached its goal of obtaining 250 megawatts of power — enough to power multiple mid-sized cities — four years early.

It's another sign that, as we've recentlydiscussed, solar is booming.

The main reason is China, which has so thoroughly flooded the global market with cheap parts that today, Europe slapped them with a new tariff.

As Bloomberg's Bruce Einhorn wrote last year, "China’s solar panel industry has become the world’s biggest thanks to a simple formula: Produce in China, sell in Europe."

But there are other signs that solar power is set to take off.

We've compiled some of them here.

In the past few years, the doubling of solar capacity has resulted in a 40% reduction in solar costs.

Mostly thanks to China.

Solar has high start-up costs, but give it enough time and it becomes the cheapest power source out there.

That's even without subsidies.

Warren Buffett recently purchased the largest solar development in the world, a set of arrays in California.

Abba museum sign

A new museum devoted to the 1970s Swedish pop band ABBA just opened in Stockholm, Sweden.

The museum, called ABBA The Museum, is devoted to all things ABBA, showcasing the band's albums, costumes, and memorabilia. Visitors will also be able to karaoke to ABBA music on stage with interactive holograms of the band members.

The museum will be part of the larger Swedish Music Hall of Fame, which also opened today.

Despite the fact that the group broke up in 1983, ABBA remains one of the most popular tourist attractions, so it's only natural that there would be a museum dedicated to the group.

ABBA The Museum is located in Djurgården, an island in central Stockholm.

Guests will walk past the glitzy lit ABBA logo.

Visitors can check out the flashy spandex and velvet 1970s costumes worn by the band members.
