I tried National Geographic's next-generation ancestry test and was surprised by my results

Helix DNA 6

By now, I should have a crystal-clear picture of my ancestry.

Both 23andMe and AncestryDNA have done a good job of confirming my Scandinavian origins.

So when I decided to try National Geographic's new Geno 2.0 test, I expected my results to be roughly the same.

National Geographic's Genographic Project has been around since 2005, making it one of the earliest genetics tests. A few months ago, it switched over to Helix's next-generation sequencing platform for its Geno 2.0 test.

What I got in my inbox looked nothing like what I'd seen before.

DON'T MISS: I've taken AncestryDNA and 23andMe genetics tests — here's what I tell people when they ask me which one is best

A box containing my Genographic Project Geno 2.0 test arrived at my office in December, and I couldn't wait to check it out.

Inside the sleeve was a booklet and a box from Helix. A company spun off from the sequencing giant Illumina, Helix is positioning itself as the app store for your DNA. Once I sent in the tube of spit containing my DNA, Helix could apply that information to other tests down the line — not just the National Geographic one I was trying.

The box was unlike other DNA tests I've tried. The combination of geometric shapes and bright boxes made it fun, and when I lifted up the pink box I found a helpful tip written underneath: "Having trouble salivating? Think about lemons!"

How to look and feel healthier in one week, according to a nutritionist

If you're feeling bloated after your Thanksgiving feast or guilty about breaking healthy eating habits, don't fret.

There are plenty of things you can start doing now to look and feel healthier quickly.

You're probably not going to wake up looking like an underwear model tomorrow — but you can certainly start feeling better and improving your digestion in a week, according to registered dietitian and nutritionist Andy Bellatti.

Here are a few things Bellatti and other nutritionists recommend.

SEE ALSO: The best way to build muscle may not be lifting the heaviest weights

DON'T MISS: 11 surprising things your physical appearance says about you

DO: Drink lots of water.

Water is essential — it regulates the shape of every cell inside our bodies. If we don't get enough, in fact, these cells begin to shrivel up.The CDC recommends choosing water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages to "help with weight management." Swapping a cold glass of H2O for a single 20-ounce soda will save you about 240 calories.

So hydrate, Bellatti told Business Insider, "ideally with water."

DON'T: Go on a juice cleanse.

If you're considering a "detox" or "juice cleanse,"you might want to reconsider. Drinking just water, juice, or any other liquefied concoction for more than a few days can set you up for unhealthy eating behaviors, and can often lead to spikes and drops in blood sugar levels, which can spawn cravings and mood swings.

"This is a recipe for 'hangriness,'" Bellatti said, "that also inaccurately paints all solid food as problematic."

DO: Cut back on sodium.

Most of us — 89% of US adults, according to the CDC— eat too much sodium, and that's not including any salt added at the table. Too much salt in your diet can cause puffiness and bloating, so cutting back can help you avoid that.

"Sodium retains water," Bellatti said, "so lowering sodium intake also reduces puffiness."

We trained at the world’s most famous boxing gym with the man who has trained 19 world champions — here’s what it was like

GleasonsTraining (13 of 38)

  • Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, New York is arguably the world's most famous boxing gym, having trained everyone from Muhammad Ali to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
  • Anyone can train at Gleason's Gym — most of the members today are regular New Yorkers learning how to box
  • We trained with Hector Roca, who has trained 19 world champions along with actors like Hilary Swank and Wesley Snipes

Gleason's Gym in New York City is a "mecca" of boxing, due not only to its storied history, but also its world-class trainers.

Since the gym opened in 1937, Gleason's has helped 134 world champions reach their peak, including legendary fighters like Jake La Motta and Roberto Duràn, and contemporary stars like Sonya Lamonakis.

Many of Gleason's 92 trainers have played a hand in shaping those champions. Some, like Alicia Ashley, are former world champions themselves.

At 78-years-old, Hector Roca is the elder statesman of the group. He's trained 19 world champions and once was considered the top Spanish-speaking trainer in the world.

I recently spent the morning at Gleason's to train with Roca and see what it's like.

Gleason's Gym is located at 130 Water Street in Brooklyn's trendy DUMBO neighborhood. The gym first moved to DUMBO in 1985, but this is actually its fourth location.

We headed to the office of owner Bruce Silverglade to get set up. Silverglade has helped run the business since 1983. His office is overflowing with nods to the gym's long history.

There was a sparring match going on in the gym's front ring. I've only boxed in the backyard in the past, but I was hoping to get in the ring.

40 of the biggest scandals in Uber's history

$

uber travis kalanick

  • Uber is plagued by a long list of scandals, ranging from reports of sexual harassment to aggressive strategies to take down the competition.
  • The company has recently been in the news for the wrong reasons, dealing with sexual harassment claims, the loss of executives including its CEO, and most recently a cyber attack cover-up.
  • However, Uber has been creating controversy far before 2017.

Uber is in hot water after a cover-up scandal involving a major security breach.

The ride-hailing company paid hackers $100,000 to cover up a cyberattack that exposed 57 million people's personal data in October 2016, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. And, while passengers and drivers only found out this week, ex-CEO Travis Kalanick reportedly found out about the breach last year.

This is far from the first time executives' decisions have blown up in Uber's face.

Uber's scandals range from arguably unethical business strategies to sexual assault allegations. Here's an attempt to understand exactly what Uber has done to become a $68 billion company.

Biz Carson contributed reporting to an earlier version of this story.

SEE ALSO: How Uber reportedly tried to keep the lid on the data breach that affected 57 million people

October 2010: UberCab receives its first cease and desist

According to New York Magazine's extensive list of Uber's ups and downs, the company's first scandal came before the startup changed its name from UberCab to Uber. Four months after launching in San Francisco, the San Francisco Metro Transit Authority & the Public Utilities Commission of California issued a cease and desist order.

UberCab changed its name to Uber. Six years later, San Francisco would have roughly 45,000 Uber drivers, compared to just 2,026 licensed taxis.

January 2012: Uber gets slammed in its first major surge pricing backlash

Uber told customers that prices would increase due to increased demand on New Years Eve. However, people were still furious when they were forced to pay three to six-times the normal amount to get a ride.

November 2012: Prices soar during Hurricane Sandy

With most public transportation down in New York City, Ubers were in high demand, leading to prices doubling. After being accused to price gouging, the company made prices revert back to normal, while continuing to pay drivers two times the rate.

23 hacks for saving money at Sephora, according to an employee

$

Sephora Store_2

  • It's hard to walk out of Sephora without a bunch of products you really didn't need.
  • While it can get expensive, there are lots of ways to cut down costs that you probably didn't even realize.
  • Take advantage of their loyalty program and free samples as much as you can.
  • Here are 23 simple ways to save money at Sephora.

Buy discounted JCPenney gift cards to save up to 20% at Sephora.

Let me tell you, nobody knows this secret. But it’s the number one way to consistently save at Sephora. Buy discounted gift cards (used gift cards that somebody else is trying to unload) and use them to save on your next purchase. Buying discounted Sephora gift cards is a good idea for savings around 11%. But buying a discounted JCPenney gift card at 20% off is a great idea! At Raise.com (it’s free!) you’ll automatically receive a $5 credit to spend on any gift card of your choice when you sign up through this link.

The secret?? You can redeem that JCP gift card at any Sephora location inside JCPenney OR (even better in my opinion) at JCPenney.com! Orders over $99 ship free, or you can avoid the charge altogether and ship any order over $25 to your nearest JCP location. A consistent 20% off on Sephora products is unheard of, you guys! JCPenney gift cards cannot be redeemed at regular Sephora locations (hence my recommendation to shop online).

Get FOUR free samples with every online order.

I love shopping at Sephora.com for the free samples! I get three samples with every order with no Sephora coupon code. But the best part (the one that not everybody knows about) is the fourth free sample. There’s always a variety to choose from. Just bookmark this Sephora beauty deals page to select the freebie and get the coupon code. I chose Free Smashbox Camera Ready Cream mini with $25 purchase.

Limit one Sephora coupon per order.

Follow Fan Fridays on Facebook for free stuff.

Every company will tell you to follow them on Facebook, but it’s actually a good idea to “like” Sephora because of their Fan Friday freebies, like this Bobbi Brown Face Blender Brush Mini, free with $25 minimum purchase.

Black Friday workers share 14 of the most outrageous things they've seen on the job

Black Friday shopping fight

  • Black Friday can bring out the worst in some people.
  • Retail workers Business Insider surveyed shared some of their most cringe-worthy stories.

If you ask the people who work in retail, Black Friday is rarely described in the most flattering of ways.

"Black Friday is like hunger games," one retail worker told Business Insider. "The tributes are released, and everyone thinks they are extra special, so they should be allowed to just open pallets and take whatever they want well before the sale."

"Being retired now, Black Friday is a nightmare of the past," a former retail worker told Business Insider. "In my many years in retail, each one seemed to get worse."

This isn't to say all Black Friday shoppers are horrible people. As one retail worker told Business Insider, "For the most part, people have always been very nice and patient. They can see it's busy and I'm doing my best to get everybody taken care of." They said it's usually the customers who are never satisfied — "we can spot them a mile away"— that are more likely to make a scene.

In honor of the "wild and hectic" day when everyone is "tired and cranky"— their words — Business Insider asked more than 40 Black Friday workers to share some of the most outrageous things they've seen working Black Friday.

Be warned: while these accounts cannot be independently verified, some of them may shatter your faith in humanity.

DON'T MISS: Black Friday workers confess 9 things they'd love to tell shoppers but can't

'I once saw a fight between strangers because someone changed lines. They did not cut in line, they just got behind the other line. And someone in front of that person — so no way they were being affected — decided to verbally attack this person. The person fought back. Nasty things were said, and both these individuals had kids with them to witness this.'

'One year when I had just begun my shift a customer with a broken leg tried to hit me with one of his crutches because I didn't know where we were keeping a particular item.'

'One year I got trapped behind the door when we opened, and I had to wait until the mad rush slowed down so I could climb under the cart rail and escape.'

19 things you didn't know about 'Aladdin'

Aladdin and Jasmine first took a magic carpet ride 25 years ago.

The hit Disney animated film is celebrating the anniversary of its release on November 25. It featured the late Robin Williams as the Genie, in what has become one of his most iconic roles. The movie is now being made into a live-action film and will have Will Smith stepping into Williams' shoes.

From hidden Disney secrets to animator's inspirations, here are 19 things you might not know about the classic movie.

Aladdin was initially supposed to be part of a street gang.

In the Broadway musical version, he has a gang of friends that he hangs out with.

Source: Variety

His mom was supposed to be an important part of the plot.

Aladdin was supposed to live with his mother, but she was later cut from the film completely, along with a ballad, "Proud of Your Boy," Aladdin was supposed to sing. The song was later included in the Broadway musical version of the film.

The entire movie had to be restructured just 19 months before release.

Then-chairman of Disney studios Jeffrey Katzenberg wasn't pleased with the directors' script or the story reel and called for a change. It was during this time that the mother was cut from the film. Those working on the film referred to that day as "Black Friday."

BI Graphics_The most dominant college football programs_2x1

When it comes to college football, there are powerhouses and then there's everyone else.

Business Insider has compiled a list of the schools that have run the most dominating football programs over the last 15 years.

To create the ranking we used a formula based on factors such as games and championships won in the last 15 years across all levels (with recent championships weighted more heavily), appearances in the biggest bowl games during that stretch, NFL players produced, and revenue generated by the football team.

Here are the 30 most dominant college football programs.

30. Houston

Football revenue, last 3 years: $36.9 million

BCS/New Years 6 bowl appearances: 1

Conference championships: 2

BCS title game/Playoff appearances: 0

National championships: 0

Players in the NFL: 13

One thing to know: Houston has proven in recent years to be one of the top and most consistent teams in FCS. They have been ranked in the top 10 at different points in three of the six seasons prior to this year and reached a New Year's Six bowl in 2015 under Tom Herman when they beat Florida State.

Data is is for the 2002-16 seasons across FBS, FCS, Division II, and Division III. Championships were weighted by division and years since title.

29. Louisville

Football revenue, last 3 years: $103.5 million

BCS/New Years 6 bowl appearances: 2

Conference championships: 4

BCS title game/Playoff appearances: 0

National championships: 0

Players in the NFL: 24

One thing to know: In 2007, head coach Bobby Petrino left Louisville just months after signing a 10-year contract extension, accepting the head coaching job for the Atlanta Falcons. Prior to the 2016 season, he signed a new 7-year deal that has him under contract at Louisville through the 2023 season. Louisville won at least nine games in six of Petrino's first seven seasons at the school.

28. Northern Illinois

Football revenue, last 3 years: $25.8 million

BCS/New Years 6 bowl appearances: 1

Conference championships: 3

BCS title game/Playoff appearances: 0

National championships: 0

17 details and brilliant moments of foreshadowing you might have missed in the 'Harry Potter' books

Ron Hermione and Harry Prisoner of Azkaban crying

J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books are the type of novel series that fans can — and do — read again and again. But given how many people haven't revisited Harry, Ron and Hermione's adventures, plus the number of scenes omitted in the movie adaptations, it's possible that you overlooked many of Rowling's smaller details or foreshadowing.

Keep scrolling for a look at the best details that you might have missed, especially without a second (or third) re-read of the series.

The first words Snape speaks to Harry have a hidden reference to Lily Potter's death.

When Harry attends his first potions lesson with Snape in "Sorcerer's Stone," the professor asks him a series of difficult questions. One of the questions is, "What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"

A Pottermore article detailing Rowling's use of the Victorian language of flowers reveals how Snape's question was really an expression of regret over Lily Potter's death.

"Asphodel is a type of lily and means 'remembered beyond the tomb' or 'my regrets follow you to the grave,' while wormwood is often associated with regret or bitterness," the Pottermore article explains.

When Fred and George Weasley bewitched snowballs to hit Professor Quirrell, they were really hitting Voldemort's face.

In "Sorcerer's Stone," Rowling says the Weasley twins were "punished for bewitching several snowballs so that they followed Quirrell around, bouncing off the back of his turban."

As several fans have pointed out in the "Harry Potter" Reddit community, Quirrell was sharing his body with Lord Voldemort at the time. Later in the book, Harry sees that Voldemort's face is sticking out of the back of Quirrell's head — which means Fred and George were actually hitting Voldemort in the face with snowballs.

Also in the first book, Harry thinks to himself that Snape might be able to read minds. Four books later, we learned that Snape was a Legilimens.

While fretting over whether or not Snape knew he, Ron, and Hermione had discovered who Nicolas Flamel was, Harry thinks to himself that Snape "could read minds."

Later, in "Order of the Phoenix," Rowling reveals that Snape is an accomplished Legilimens, meaning he sort of can read minds. Here's how Snape describes Legilimency to Harry:

"Only Muggles talk of 'mind reading.' The mind is not a book, to be opened at will and examined at leisure. Thoughts are not etched on the inside of skulls, to be perused by any invader [...] Those who have mastered Legilimency are able, under certain conditions, to delve into the minds of their victims and to interpret their findings correctly."

Iron Bowl

College football Rivalry Week is upon us!

With Rivalry Week comes key matchups that will have a massive ripple-effect on how the postseason shakes out. Other rivalries have simply been going on for so long that the bitterness is ingrained in players from the day they step on campus. Some of these games have trophies, while others rely on clean, old-fashioned hate to fuel the fire between the teams.

Below we've highlighted some of the best games for you to keep an eye on Saturday.

The Iron Bowl — Alabama vs. Auburn

Rivalry since: 1893

All time record: Alabama leads, 45-35–1

Last year: Alabama 30, Auburn 12

Trophy: Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, named after Dean James E. Foy, who served at both schools.

At stake this year: As much as there possibly could be for a non-playoff, non-championship game. It's already the most enthralling rivalry in college football, and this year the winner gets not only bragging rights but a trip to the SEC title game as the representative of the SEC West. For Auburn, a win would also mean that their hopes of making the college football playoff are still very much alive.

Where to watch: 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS

Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate — Georgia vs. Georgia Tech

Rivalry since: 1893

All time record: Georgia leads, 65–41–5

Last year: Georgia Tech 28, Georgia 27

Trophy: The Governor's Cup

At stake this year: Georgia needs to win to keep their hopes at making the playoff alive, and Georgia Tech would love nothing more than playing spoiler.

Where to watch: 12 p.m. ET on ABC

The Legends Trophy — Notre Dame vs. Stanford

Rivalry since: 1925

All time record: Notre Dame leads, 19–12

Last year: Stanford 17, Notre Dame 10

Trophy: The Legends Trophy

At stake this year: Pride mostly, but the winner will surely be in a better bowl game, and will have a good shot at a New Years' Six game.

Where to watch: 8 p.m. on ABC

Not much is known about Crown Prince Mohammed's early life. He is the eldest son of King Salman’s third wife, and reportedly spent much of his time shadowing his father.

A 2015 New York Times article details how unexpected his rise has been, noting that his three older half-brothers "all have distinguished résumés and were once considered contenders for top government roles."

Texas Longhorns Locker Room

The key to winning in college football is a good coach and top-notch recruiting. Texas thinks they have the former in new coach Tom Herman, and he has a leg up on the latter thanks to a new locker room.

The University of Texas recently spent $10 million renovating their athletic center and $7 million of that went to the football locker room alone. That renovation included new custom-designed lockers that cost about $8,700 each.

The new bells and whistles will certainly impress any high school recruits who walk through.

Below we take a closer look at the locker room and the lockers.

You enter the locker room by pulling on the Longhorns logo.

A lot of locker rooms have the team logo on the floor. The Longhorns now have a glowing Bevo on the ceiling. Can't step on that.

There are signs with the program's "core values," which includes "treat women with respect."

The 15 countries with the worst organised crime problems in the world

Barrio 18 gang member tattoos

The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently published its annual Global Competitiveness Report, which looks at dozens of measures of economic and institutional health to compile a ranking of countries.

One of the subcategories used by the WEF is the prevalence of organised crime — listed under the "security" index. Extortion, racketeering, theft, violence, and property damage are all factors that could hold back a country's development.

We took a look at the worst performers on the list. The majority of countries with the worst gang problems are in south and central America but there is one European country that makes the list.

Each country is given a score from 1 to 7 indicating how bad the problem is. 1 indicates that it's a big problem that imposes huge costs; 7 means no problem at all.

Here are the fifteen countries with the worst gang problems:

15. Italy: 3.5

Long associated with the Mafia, Italy has struggled to shake the influence of groups such as  Cosa Nostra in Sicily, 'Ndrangheta of Calabria (who are considered to be among the biggest cocaine smugglers in Europe), and Camorra in Naples. North African gangs have recently extended activities in Italy due to the unprecedented refugee crisis that peaked in 2015. The crisis led to a huge black market in people smuggling to Europe. Italy was a key entry point for many groups.

=12. Mali: 3.4

Civil war between Islamist groups in the North of Mali and the government broke out in 2012. A peace deal was signed in 2015 but violence has recently flared up again in the country. The fighting has allowed organised crime to flourish. Charity International Action writes: "Illegal trade in drugs, weapons and goods, and people trafficking across the Sahel, has been a powerful dynamic in the formation of armed groups in northern Mali."

=12. Mozambique: 3.4

The southern African country of Mozambique borders six other countries and also has a coast on the Indian Ocean, making it a hub for illegal trafficking. The US State Department assessed the crime and safety risk of the country as "critical" in its most recent report on the country and said: "All borders, including the eastern coast and airports, are porous and facilitate trafficking drugs, humans, and illicit wildlife products. While lack of opportunity prevents most illegal traffickers from settling in Mozambique, the constant flux of people and goods brings with it nefarious elements and businesses."
