It's Official: 4 Young Founders Just Bought A $40 Million Mountain To Party On

0

elliot bisnow greg mauro summit

For the past year, it's been known that four entrepreneurs, Elliot Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal and Jeremy Schwartz, have been trying to buy a mountain in Eden, Utah.

There, they want to host Summit Series, a popular, startup conference attended by a younger set of entrepreneurs who like to work hard and play hard.

Today, the lofty $40 million party purchase became official. Here's an email the four 20-something founders sent to members this afternoon:

We are excited to announce that Summit has officially purchased Powder Mountain, the largest ski mountain in the United States. We are well on our way to creating the permanent home of Summit, an epicenter of innovation, culture, and thought leadership on nearly 10,000 acres in Utah's Wasatch Mountains.

You can get the full download on the project via The Next Web and ESPN

Things are moving quickly here in Eden. The core infrastructure project, which includes a 1.5 mile long road bringing utilities to our new village, has already begun. We could not have done this without tremendous support from Powder Mountain, the Ogden Valley, Weber County, and the state of Utah. We are humbled to be here and hope to share the passion and expertise of the Summit community with our new neighbors for decades to come.

Over the coming months and years we look forward to hosting events at Summit Eden that continue to draw the Summit community together and catalyze collaboration and positive growth.

Lastly, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us along the way and helped shape the vision of what this place will become over the next 100 years. None of this would have been possible without you.

With love and admiration,

-The Summit Team

Summit Series was founded in 2008 and the first gathering had 19 people. Now it attracts hundreds of attendees. Events have been held in Mexico, on a Caribbean cruise ship, and in Squaw Valley, California.

The conference, which is usually three or four days, has a reputation for being an amazing networking experience, full of non-stop partying paired with an stellar guest list. Past attendees have included Richard Branson, Bill Clinton, and Russell Simmons.

So, what does a $40 million entrepreneur get-away look like?

Summit Series was founded in 2008 by four entrepreneurs: Elliot Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal and Jeremy Schwartz

It's an annual conference/party for business leaders and startup founders. You can think of it as Davos for the up-and-comers.

Events have been held in Utah, Mexico, DC, on a cruise ship to the Bahamas, and in Squaw Valley.

THE DESIGN 75: The Best Designers In Technology

0
0

Mari Sheibley 4sq

In the tech world, there has traditionally been more emphasis on engineering than on design. Build a machine that works first, and decide on the colors later.

No more. Innovative companies know that if they don't get the design right — particularly as it relates to the user-interface — then they might as well not launch a new product at all. If users don't get it, it doesn't matter how innovative it is — you're wasting your time.

Some of companies leading this charge are Apple, Path, Pinterest, Square, and Airbnb. Design is at the core of their businesses.

Last month, Business Insider asked our readers to submit nominations for the most talented designers in the tech industry. After sifting through reader submissions and scouring the web for qualified designers, we've come up with a list of the 75 best designers in tech.

The list includes product designers, mobile app designers, web designers, user interface designers, human interaction designers, you name it.

When determining the ranking, we took into account a few different criteria: experience, quality of work, number of nominations, and size of company.

Thanks to BI writer Dominic Green for helping compile this list.

75. Alison Lewis

CEO/Creative Director, Agent of Presence

Alison Lewis is a designer and fashion technologist who brings high-tech innovation and design to clothing, household objects, and small electronics. She currently runs Agent of Presence, a fashion accessory design company. Their first products are an LED illuminated dress and luxury handbag.

Lewis has been named one of Fast Company's Most Influential Women In Tech, and is the author of Switch Craft, a DIY electronic crafts book. Her entrepreneurial endeavors have been covered by the NYTimes, Associated Press, WWD, and The Martha Stewart Show.

74. Drew Davidson

“Knot Detangler,” Sr. Experience Director at ÄKTA

Drew Davidson helps ensure a consistent vision through all phases of a product's development process.

Before joining AKTA, Davidson was the lead information architect on Motorola SmartActions. The software enables you to do a wide variety of things autonomously, like silencing your phone when you walk into a movie theater, and hiding work email alerts on the weekend.

From a nominator:"Armed with a degree in cognitive psychology Drew deserves of this distinction because of because of his deep understanding and curiosity for people and the way they interact in a digital world. Drew’s design work can be seen when users do exactly what the product intended them to do. He gives a new definition to the term designer because his work is experienced and not just viewed, making him a pioneer in the digital product design space. I’m sure you will not come across many designers who have an analytical mind and the ability to draw out consumer insights to input into his design work."

73. Alberto Moro

Interaction Designer, IDEO

Currently an Interaction Designer at the design and consulting firm IDEO, Alberto works at the intersection of design, computer science, art, and anthropology.

His design approach, which emphasizes human impact, is illustrated by his 2010 project Hello. The project was honored at the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.

The 20 Hottest Startups From The World's 2nd-Biggest Startup Factory – Israel

0
0

Tel Aviv startup BillGuard

Israel calls itself the "startup nation." Israelis say that technology is the country's No. 1 export.

By some counts, Israel is home to 4,800 startups today. It's also home to least two dozen accelerator/incubator programs in the Tel Aviv area, alone, including some run by Microsoft and Google.

There are more incubators in other cities, too, including a program in Jerusalem run by Jerusalem Venture Partners on a campus so big it has its own restaurant and nightclub.

All of this is to say that as a startup hub, Israel is second only to Silicon Valley.

So it's not easy to name the nation's hottest, most exciting startups because everywhere you turn there are young companies doing really cool things.

Business Insider recently spent a week exploring Israel's super hot startup community, meeting with founders, employees and venture capitalists.

(Disclosure: Microsoft and Jerusalem Venture Partners paid some of the travel expenses for this trip.)

We asked everyone to name the nation's coolest, hottest startups.

Waze: crowdsourced traffic reports

Waze is far and away the hottest, most talked about startup in Israel these days.

It's an internationally popular maps-and-navigation app for 30 million drivers worldwide. Drivers report their traffic problems, which is a great way to get real time traffic info.

At one point, Apple was rumored to be buying Waze. That didn't happen but the company is doing so well that co-founder Uri Levine has become an angel investor in other Israeli startups, like Pixtr, the app that makes people look gorgeous in photos.

Waze has offices in Palo Alto, Calif. and New York.

Wix: beautiful websites

Wix is a five-year-old company backed by VC firms like Benchmark and Bessemer.

It provides free and low-cost websites and lets people with no tech background create beautiful sites. Wix hosts over 30 million sites.

In Israel, Wix is known for its gorgeous offices in an up-and-coming area in near the Mediterranean sea called Tel Aviv Port. (Here are some pictures of the office.)

Wix has offices in San Francisco and New York.

BillGuard: a new way to protect you from fraud

BillGuard protects consumers against a kind of fraud-like activity it calls "grey charges." That's where companies sneak regular charges on your credit card.

Once you sign up, you do nothing more. BillGuard monitors the world for fishy transactions and gets the refund for you, for up to three cards for free. It charges $80/year to protect up to 10 cards.

BillGuard has raised $13 million so far from big-named VCs including Bessemer, Khosla, Founders Fund (Peter Thiel's and Sean Parker's fund) and Innovation Endeavors (Google chairman Eric Schmidt).

BillGuard also has an office in New York.

14 Fast Food Items You Can't Get Anymore

0
0

mcdonalds arch deluxe

These items were once easy to find on your favorite fast food menus. But due to low demand or disastrous marketing campaigns, all were phased out — much to the dismay of loyal fans.

From the McDonald's Arch Deluxe to the Wendy's SuperBar, we took a look at 14 fast food items that have been discontinued during the past few decades.

Most still have a following on Facebook fan pages. But besides Taco Bell's Beefy Crunch Burrito, which is returning to restaurants in late May, the majority of these items probably aren't going to stage a comeback any time soon.

Burger King Burger Shots

Burger King tried three times to make sliders stick at their stores. The sandwiches were meant to be a direct competitor to the famed White Castle sliders.

When the initial model didn't work, they made the burgers bigger and launched a similar product called the Burger Buddies a few years later.

The chain's last slider attempt came in 2009 with Burger Shots. But customers still didn't bite, and they have been discontinued.

The Wendy's SuperBar

Remember when Wendy's had a salad bar? The chain still offers salads, but the days of self-serve are long gone.

The SuperBars also used to offer a pasta bar and "Mexica fiesta" station. In the end, the bars weren't easy for workers to keep up with, and with all-you-can-eat for less than $4 a plate, it probably wasn't too profitable either. Wendy's has stuck to its pre-made salad options since phasing this staple out.

The McDLT

Jason Alexander sang the praises of the McDLT burger (which stood for McDonald's Lettuce Tomato) when it hit the McDonald's menu in the early 1990s. The burger was supposed to be a new rival to the Whopper, and had the tagline "Keep the hot side hot, and the cool side cool."

But it didn't work out. A lot of the product's demise has been blamed on its polystyrene packaging. The container had one side for the hot parts burger and bun and another side for the cold toppings — lettuce, tomato, cheese and pickles. Making customers put the burger together themselves might have been too asking too much, and some people blamed it for not being eco-friendly.

12 Reasons The US Shale Boom Is Totally Overrated

0
0

water drop rippleThe fossil fuel industry is booming, and has a lot more room to run, thanks to incredible technological progress in oil and gas production from shale rock.

In theory, this should create jobs, lower energy costs, and bring manufacturing capacity back to the U.S.

By some accounts, the economy is cleaning up on this.

But analysts now say that while there are real gains to be had, we should be a bit more realistic about their extent.

In his new book "The Power Surge," Council on Foreign Relations expert Michael Levi says that while it's undeniable the oil and gas boom has created jobs and wealth, it's overall impact on GDP will probably be muted.

"People who claim that natural gas will spark a broad-based U.S. economic renaissance, if only pesky environmentalists lay off, are exaggerating the benefits of the shale gas bonanza," he writes.

He's not alone — we recently told you about the note from Capital Economics' Paul Dales, who says, "The boom in domestic energy production is responsible for only a small part of the rise in GDP since the recession and it does not explain why the US has outperformed most of its closest competitors."

We've compiled just a few charts that demonstrate why, outside of the energy industry itself, we're probably not going to see all that big of a spill-over effect from shale oil and gas production into the broader economy.

According to the BEA, the U.S. mining sector, which includes oil and gas production, contributed a measly 7/100ths of a point to the 2.2 GDP growth we saw in 2012.

Basically, a nudge.

Energy intensive industries are adding about 10% less value than all manufacturers.

Same for sectors that are utilities intensive.

Relative to the rest of the economy, the energy intensive industries aren't outperforming.

It's pretty much stayed even.

Jeff Bezos

Consulting group McKinsey & Co. thinks it has figured out Amazon's "secret sauce."

In 2011, 13% of all U.S. online retail sales went through Amazon,McKinsey believes.

The secret? Lower prices than its rivals, a greater product assortment, and better customer relations.

Amazon's domination of the retail market is bolstered by a "maniacal"tech investment strategy, according to the report.

This deck shows why McKinsey believes Amazon is poised to capture even more U.S. retail market share, at the expense of its main street rivals.

9 Totally Under-The-Radar Superfoods

0
0

Maca Powder 2Just when we thought superfoods may have lost their luster, we came across nine nutritionally-stellar, totally under-the-radar powerhouses.

Forget salmon, avocado, and walnuts — these yummy foods and spices stem from a mix of ancient Japanese, Korean, Indian, and Middle-Eastern diets, and pack one heckuva better-body punch.

Read on to get the scoop straight from the experts on these exciting new superfoods.

Fennel Seeds naturally de-bloat and detox the body.

Sprinkle some of these glorious little seeds on your next salad or roasted vegetables, toss them into your morning scramble or dinner stir-fry, even chew on them alone after any meal,” suggests Candice Kumai, chef and star of E!’s new show "Playing with Fire" and author of "Cook Yourself Sexy."

Here’s why: Fennel seeds have been used in alternative medicine for over 4,000 years to help naturally de-bloat and detox the body. They also aid in digestion and have inherent anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, they’re rich in antioxidants, fiber, and iron.

Curry Powder may help prevent heart attacks.

“The secret to this popular Southeast Asian dish is the curry powder itself,” says Kumai. The main component, a.k.a. curcumin, is a bright yellow powder derived from turmeric. “Curcumin is a phytonutrient (which means a plant-based nutrient) that has the same qualities as antioxidants,” explains Kumai. “Phytonutrients can help to boost immune function — they are also known to possibly lower the risk of heart disease."

“This golden-hued Indian spice (also known as Indian saffron) is a member of the ginger family that has strong antioxidant properties and has been well-researched for its cancer-fighting and anti-inflammatory properties,” says Samantha Lynch, R.D., founder of Samantha Lynch Nutrition in New York City.

“Home remedies and uses date back thousands of years for relieving menstrual cramps, respiratory conditions, intestinal worms, liver obstruction, ulcers, and inflammation," says Lynch. "Local folklore says that the herb strengthens the immune system, relieves inflammation, and improves digestion, among other conditions.”

Yet, it’s the spice often overlooked on the kitchen rack when it should be the frontrunner. “I have been sneaking turmeric into our family meals for the past year without anyone noticing — I sprinkle it on fish, in spinach, and even on eggs in the morning,” says Lynch. Bring. It. On.

Umeboshi plums are thought to help reduce bloating and improve digesiton.

Considered by some as the king (or queen, for that matter) of "alkaline foods," these pickled plums are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and are actually more like an apricot than a plum.

Ume-plums offer a complex taste explosion — they are simultaneously very sour and salty. As for health pros: They may aid in digestion and help with bloating, and also contain some immunity-boosting properties — even possibly helping the liver in metabolizing fat. Their prime pairing is a bowl of steamed rice, or simply use them to create a paste or marinade by removing the fleshy party of the fruit from the seed, suggests Kumai.

American Airlines Threw A Party To Welcome A Crucial New Plane [PHOTOS]

AA BOEING 773 DELIVERY FLIGHT

In November, 2011 just days before filing for bankruptcy, American Airlines became the first carrier in the United States to order the world’s most efficient and successful long-haul airliner, the Boeing 777-300ER.

On January 31, 2013, American inaugurated its first Boeing 777-300ER service with a flight between Dallas/Ft. Worth and Sao Paulo, Brazil. I was onboard this historic flight and my expectations were absolutely exceeded in nearly every way.

On April 24-25, American’s Boeing 777-300, the "new face" of the airline, had its official Grand Opening / Coming Out Party, with a two-day delivery flight event that we were fortunate enough to be invited on.

The location: the World’s “Mecca of Commercial Aviation” — Seattle, Washington.

Editor's Note: You can read more about Chris' tour of the 737 and 777 factory here, and about the aircraft delivery hereAmerican Airlines paid for Chris' hotel.

Boeing provided a breakfast under a party tent, complete with a DJ, making for a very festive mood.

Just before boarding began, there were group photo shots with two banners: one commemorating the delivery and one honoring a seriously ill “AA Rockstar”, DFW agent Angie Barakat, who was unable to make the flight.

Finally, everyone gathered for the big ribbon cutting on the red carpet and after the parade of hoopla, boarding for the appropriately numbered flight 9777 began.

What The Figures In Abstract Paintings Would Look Like In Real Life

0

Hungarian photographer Flóra Borsi is no stranger to manipulating photographs for her art, and now she's taking on master painters in her latest project The Real Life Models.

The 19-year-old emerging artist imagined what the exaggerated bodies in abstract and surrealist paintings would actually look like if they were real people.

She explains her project in her own words:

Nowadays almost every photographer use graphics software to complete the picture, like many painters used 'original version' in the past.

Some artists use pure imagination to paint their artwork, others may prefer to create art by using a real life model as reference for the anatomy.

What if these abstract models were real people?

Check out four of Borsi's imagined models from paintings by Picasso and Austrian painter Rudolf Hausner.

India Really Has A Magazine Called 'Bureaucracy Today' — And It's Perfect

0
0

BT Cover

India's bureaucracy has repeatedly been named the worst in Asia. In fact the term bureaucracy is often used synonymously with corruption in India, while it other parts of the world it refers more to red tape.

So it's fascinating and wonderful to see a magazine focused entirely on bureaucracy with the fantastically blunt title "bureaucracy today."

Jump to Bureaucracy Today >

Bureaucracy Today was launched in March 2009 by Suhaib A Ilyasi, who famously launched a television show called India's Most Wanted in 1999. The magazine claims to have a readership of over 600,000. Its website also declares that its readers are responsible for over 70% of India's GDP. The magazine costs Rs. 50 (about $0.93).

So, we decided to get a copy of the publication and look through it to see what's inside. The magazine was nearly impossible to find in Mumbai, the nation's financial capital. Every news vendor and book store I visited stared back at me quizzically. A friend tracked down a copy in Delhi, home to India's political capital, New Delhi, and brought it with her to Mumbai.

I expected the magazine to have at least one investigative piece, considering its subhead reads "fearless journalism, our habit, our history!" That isn't however what I found inside. Instead it's a very straightforward take on the latest things happening in Bureaucracy.

An Indian Express article published almost a year after Bureaucracy Today's launch dubbed it and other magazines centered on bureaucracy "feelgood journalism for the babu." When used in the pejorative 'babu' refers to a corrupt bureaucrat.

The Business Today cover looks a lot like Newsweek and India's Frontline magazine.

The 'Bureaucracy Scan' section includes recent appointments, transitions, and exits among bureaucrats all over India. It even asks Bureaucrats to email news of their appointment.

'The Behind the Curtain' section of the magazine is gossipy, like a claim that a Congress politician's attacks on a rival have the nod of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Indian political royalty.

A townhouse with an impressive history on NYC's Central Park West was just listed for $37 million.

Built by a developer in 1887, it's one of just a few townhouses left on the park. The six-level home belonged to Abigail Disney, a grandniece of Walt, before it sold to former Coach COO Keith Monda, according to Curbed.

Monda sold the home to an undisclosed buyer last year after it was listed for just over $22 million, and now it's back on the market.

The home has some impressive features, including 12,000 square feet of space, a glass-and-steel staircase, and a home gym with an indoor lap pool.

Sotheby's has the listing.

The townhouse is located on 85th Street and Central Park West.

It was built in 1887, but is completely modern inside.

Lincoln's New MKZ Looks Nice, But It Has A Lot Of Flaws [PHOTOS]

2013 Lincoln MKZ review

In December, Ford announced it was rebranding its luxury brand Lincoln, which is languishing in eighth place in the American luxury segment.

That plan involved a name change, a big marketing push, and the 2013 MKZ, the first of four new Lincoln cars Ford plans to debut over the next four years.

Lincoln has made some iconic, amazing cars in its day. It has made some truly terrible ones.

This MKZ is neither.

It's based on the Ford Fusion, with different bodywork. The Fusion is a great $21,000 car. But, even with a sexier body and luxury features, it is not a great $37,815 car.

The new MKZ is certainly a step forward for Lincoln, but it reveals how far the brand has to go to put itself on the level of the top luxury brands it hopes to compete with.
