Music is continuing have to a huge impact on pop culture. Memes from songs like "Bad and Boujee," and challenges like the #MaskOffChallenge were all over Twitter this year. Lyrics from "Bodak Yellow" are now part of our culture's vocabulary.

But which songs left the biggest impressions on us?

Google narrowed down the top-trending song searches in the US over the past 12 months.

Keep scrolling for the 10 most searched for songs on Google this year.

"Despacito," both with and without Justin Bieber, was the song of the summer.

"Despacito" was truly inescapable this year. It's currently the most watched video on YouTube with over 4 billion views. Spotify also revealed it was the most streamed song this summer — and including the remix with Bieber, it's the most streamed song ever.

It was so inescapable that Siri, for a brief moment, thought it was the national anthem of Bulgaria.

"Humble" inspired many viral videos and Instagram captions this year.

"My left stroke just went viral,""Sit down, be humble," and "I'm so f-----' sick and tired of the Photoshop," were commonly heard phrases this year, and they all originated from Kendrick Lamar's standout track "Humble" from his album "DAMN."

Lamar has the second-most Grammy nominations this year (only behind Jay-Z), and the biting lyrics and social commentary from songs like "Humble" show us why.

"Bad and Boujee" was rap trio Migos' breakout hit.

If you haven't heard anyone say "rain drop, drop top" this year, consider yourself lucky. The lyric was everywhere — even Alex Trebek rapped it.

The group might have Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) to thank: when he won his Golden Globe this year, he thanked"the Migos, not for being in the show, but for making ‘Bad and Boujee'... Like, that’s the best song, ever." After this speech, the song had a 243% increase in streams.

I'm always looking for ways to streamline how I pack for a trip. Despite thinking I'm already a pretty good packer, I still think I can be better. Maybe you feel the same way.

Some of the best tips I've adopted into my travel routine are recommendations from friends and coworkers. So to help inspire you, I asked my Business Insider colleagues to share the things they always bring when they travel, and I got some interesting responses.

Some are seemingly random (an audio splitter), some are convenient (a pair of noise-cancelling headphones), and some you probably didn't realize you needed (a bottle of melatonin).

SpaceX buys produce from this high-tech farm in a shipping container — take a look inside

local roots farm

By 2050, the world will need to feed 9.7 billion people— 2.4 billion more than today.

A growing movement of people believes that indoor farming could be a solution to the increasing demand for food. Instead of natural sunlight, crops grow under LED lights and in a nutrient-rich water-based solution that mimics soil.

Using this technique, farmers can grow produce year-round in urban areas, monitor progress with embedded sensors, and deliver produce within hours of harvest.

A startup called Local Roots makes indoor farms, called TerraFarms, from shipping containers. The team operates the farms near its customers, which include large corporate offices (SpaceX is one of them) as well as giant distribution centers for restaurants and grocery stores.

Local Roots will deploy more than 100 new TerraFarms in 2018. The company is also moving into a new, 165,000-square-foot manufacturing and headquarters in Vernon, California.

We toured a farm in New York City in early December. Take a look inside below.

Local Roots operates 320-square-foot indoor farms made from shipping containers, which take two weeks to build.

To date, Local Roots has raised $10.5 million.

The company's Series A financing is expected to close in early 2018.

Each container can produce about 4,000 heads of lettuce every 10 days, Local Roots cofounder Eric Ellestad told Business Insider. The farms can technically grow any fruit or vegetable, but greens are the most economically viable crop.

Existing customers include healthy fast-casual chain Tender Greens, farm-to-table restaurant chain Mendocino Farms, and SpaceX, the aerospace company run by Elon Musk.

Elon Musk's brother, Kimbal Musk, cofounded a shipping container farm compound called Square Roots in Brooklyn, New York in 2016.

On seven rows of growing trays on two opposite walls, leafy greens sprout from soil-free growing beds with nutrient-rich water.

13 things mentally strong leaders don't do

coworker boss employee

  • Great leaders avoid bad habits that are a detriment to their mental strength, and others.
  • Instead, they accept their insecurities, and don't suppress their emotions.
  • They don't deny their own limitations, and show compassion to others.
  • They also stay focused on their own path to success.

My fifteen years as a psychotherapist taught me about mental strength and the resilience of the human spirit. I saw countless people bounce back from overwhelming adversity and beat the odds.

One of the biggest lessons I learned about mentally strong people was that their resilience had less to do with what they did and was more dependent on what they didn't do.

People who resisted unhealthy mental habits had an incredible advantage in life. No matter what hardships, challenges, or setbacks they encountered, they had a superior ability to reach their greatest potential.

Leaders, in particular, need mental muscle to lead their teams through good times and bad. And to make their good habits effective, they need to give up the bad habits that could rob them of mental strength.

Here are the 13 things mentally strong leaders don't do:

SEE ALSO: 10 qualities recruiters never want to see

1. They don't mask their insecurities

Admitting you're not adept at everything requires humility — which is a true sign of strength. But many leaders want to act tough. Mentally strong leaders, however, refuse to waste their time and energy hiding their weaknesses. Instead, they put their effort into growing better and becoming stronger.

2. They don't make their self-worth dependent upon other's opinions

If your self-worth plummets each time you hear something critical — or skyrockets every time you receive praise — you'll become a people pleaser who can't successfully lead. Mentally strong leaders don't depend on others to validate their self-worth.

3. They don't let their emotions control them

Mentally strong leaders don't suppress their emotions — they are acutely aware of how their feelings influence their behavior. Rather than blow up every time they're angry or bow out every time they're nervous, they're able to regulate their emotions so they can behave productively.

The best fine motor toys for toddlers

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

fine motor 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Helping a child improve fine motor skills will improve the youngster's prowess at writing, dressing, building, eating, and just about everything else. Fine motor toys make that process fun. The Magna-Tiles Clear Color 100-Piece Set is our top choice because children as young as one enjoy manipulating the colorful tiles, while older children love challenging themselves to build ever larger, more complex structures.

A child's early development of fine motor skills is imperative for their successful progress toward the elementary school years and then on into the rest of his or her life. Competent fine motor control is imperative for everything from the proper use of a pen or pencil to the use of utensils to typing to handling buttons and zippers to ten thousand and one other activities as well.

Unfortunately, far too many contemporary children display a lack of sufficient fine motor skill development. This is the case in part due to how much the nature of play has changed in recent years. The shift from play with building toys, art materials, and other such hands-on manipulative activities to more modern toys with buttons and, in just the past few years, the growth of screen-based play sees children using their hands and in fact their entire bodies less and less. This leads to lower tone in fine motor muscles and less dexterous control.

Even in the classroom, the shift toward integrated technology proves a double-edged sword, offering more opportunity for the enrichment of necessary contemporary skills, but affording less opportunity for fine motor development.

Fortunately, fine motor skills can always be improved. And even more fortunately, one of the best ways parents or other caregivers can help young children with this improvement is by providing kids with toys they will love to play with. No reason to tell them they're in fact developing motor control skills at the same time...

The toddler fine motor toys on this list have been thoroughly tested by experts, vetted by parents, and played with by toddlers. One of the latter happens to live in my house with my wife and me, so we've tested a few of these toys. (Also, he happens to be our son.) These toys are first and foremost engaging and amusing, which is important for their secondary benefit: They challenge the young mind and body, helping build and refine fine motor muscles and strengthen the neural pathways connecting said muscles to the child's brain.

Read on in the slides below to learn why the Magna-Tiles Clear Color 100-Piece Set is our top pick and why your toddler may also love the Learning Resources Helping Hands Fine Motor Tool Set, the Learning Resources Avalanche Fruit Stand Game, the Skoolzy Jumbo Toddler Lacing and Stringing Beads, and the Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Frosting Fun Bakery Playset.

SEE ALSO: 23 STEM toys that will excite and educate kids of every age

The best fine motor toy overall

Why you'll love it: While the Magna-Tiles Clear Color 100-Piece Set certainly helps children improve fine motor skills, it also helps develop math skills, spatial reasoning, and logic.

My son is now four years old, and he has been playing with Magna-Tiles for three years. (I'm sure you can do the math on that one!) While most kids outgrow and/or tire of most toys, his love for his Magna-Tiles has only grown, and the structures he builds have only grown larger and more complex.

What he sees merely as creating parking garages, apartment buildings, houses, and all sorts of other colorful structures, my wife and I also see as improved dexterity and better hand-eye coordination. And also parking garages ... lots of parking garages.

This 100-Piece Magna-Tile set is expensive, but how many other toys can you expect a child to play with for three, four, perhaps even seven or eight years? (Or more — I rather enjoy playing with the things myself.) They are well worth their price due to their longevity and thanks to how deeply children can engage with this elegantly simply toy.

There is no right or wrong way to play with Magna-Tiles. The play is entirely open-ended, freeing the child from the rigidity of so many toys, and of far too many fine motor-oriented toys in particular.

The refinement of dexterity that comes with repeatedly placing narrow tiles edge upon edge is but one of the benefits of this toy, though. Playing with Magna-Tiles can also help a young person develop math skills, spatial reasoning capacity, logic and planning ability, and, for the very young child, they help teach shapes and colors.

The Magna-Tiles Clear Color 100-Piece Set has a superlative 4.9-star average rating on Amazon. One mother speaks for many parents when she calls them "one of the best toys ever," adding that her children's "creativity knows no bounds with these, and they never get tired of them. On top of that, these things are tough ... our original set is still going strong."

A writer with ResearchParent.com calls Magna-Tiles an "indestructible" toy notable" for keeping kids engaged for a surprisingly long amount of time," a feat few toys can match. It is also our top pick for educational toys in our buying guide.

Pros: Help develop multiple skills, suitable for wide age range, durable design

Cons: Quite expensive

Buy the Magna-Tiles Clear Colors 100-Piece Set on Amazon for $120

The best low-cost fine motor toy

Why you'll love it: The Learning Resources Helping Hands Fine Motor Tool Set costs less than $10, comes with four toys that kids enjoy using, and develops the pincer grasp.

I'm honestly not writing a list exclusively about toys our son loves, OK? We did a lot of research before getting him some of these toys, and now I'm merely applying that same research here. But ... this is yet another toy set we do have in our house.

The Learning Resources Helping Hands Fine Motor Tool Set allows a child to experiment with all sorts of small objects, from beads to pebbles to pompoms and more, and to siphon up and spread around water, both of which are things most children love to do.

In the process, these tweezers, scoopers, and droppers help a child develop his or her pincer grasp, the hold needed for correct use of a writing implement, utensils, art supplies, and more. Extended use of the implements in the set will also increase hand muscle tone.

With four tools in the set, this one is a good choice for the multi-kid family (assuming they're all relatively young) or for schools, daycare centers, or even occupational therapy centers. The low price also helps out for organizations that need multiple items for a larger number of kids.

With hundreds of reviews in, this set as a commendable 4.4 out of five-star rating. One parent calls them great for the kid who "needs a fun and entertaining way to learn." Another called them "great learning tools" and reported that her daughter mastered cutting using scissors after only a week practicing with these toys.

And again, I can vouch for this one personally: While your youngster is pretending to be a scientist, paleontologist, cook, or whatever else he or she chooses to imagine while using these manipulative tools, those fine motor skills and hand muscles will benefit.

Pros: Great low price, four tools in set, helps develop pincer grasp

Cons: Initially frustrating for some children

Buy the Learning Resources Helping Hands Fine Motor Tool Set on Amazon for $8.19 (originally $12.99)

The best fine motor skills game

Why you'll love it: Kids playing Educational Insights' Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game won't realize they are working hand muscle tone and dexterity capabilities — They will be too busy having fun gathering acorns for their squirrel.

It's hard to resist the charming little critters in the Educational Insights Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game. Kids will love gathering the different colors of acorns from the "forest" and will be thrilled by the occasional opportunity to swipe an acorn from other players. They will enjoy using the squirrel-shaped tongs to deftly place the acorns in the appropriate spot on their log game cards. And win or lose, it's always exciting to see where the spinner lands, showing which squirrel gets more food, and who has their acorns sneakily nabbed away.

What children will be less cognizant of is that fact that in picking up and placing those acorns, they are working on hand muscle tone and hand-eye coordination. The game also helps cement color matching familiarity and can even promote enhanced strategic thinking and planning. No need to mention all of that to the players, though.

While simple enough in premise for kids as young as three, the game is nonetheless enjoyable enough for the adult destined to play round after round.

The Educational Insights Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game has an impressive 4.7-star average rating on Amazon. One insightful review puts it best, saying: "Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel is a game perfect for preschoolers to develop matching skills, develop fine motor skills, social skills of taking turns, and strategic thinking skills."

A reviewer from Time to Play Magazine called the game "cute" and "fun" and noted how the squirrel tweezers can "really help preschoolers with those fine motor skills."

Pros: Fun for parents and kids or group of kids, promotes strategic thinking, teaches social skills

Cons: Spinner is too flimsy

Buy the Educational Insights' Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game on Amazon for $12.49 (originally $21.99)

10 jobs everyone under 40 wants to get

  • Researchers looked at employment data to determine which careers attract the most millennials.
  • They determined that the internet has played a vital role in which careers millennials choose.
  • Many millennials have physically demanding jobs such as paramedics and firefighters.
  • There is a large pay disparity between the most popular jobs for millennials — salaries can range from $20,000 to $101,000.

The first cohort of millennials entered the workforce around the time of the Great Recession, when the economy was sputtering. Combine that fact with the constantly changing make-up of the modern economy and you have a uniquely difficult employment situation for working millennials. Below we look at the data to see how millennials have responded and to find the most popular jobs for millennials.

In order to find the most millennial-dominated jobs, we looked at Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Current Population Survey. We looked at data to find where millennials made up the highest percentage of employed workers in each occupation. For the purposes of this study, we defined millennials as those between the ages of 25 and 34 in 2016. Check out the data and methodology below to see where we got our data and how we put it together.

Key findings

  • The internet – The internet has changed how almost everyone does their jobs. However, three of the occupations on this list owe a great deal of their growth and prominence in this ranking to modern technology. Occupations like statisticians, web developers and television, video and motion picture camera operators and editors are all occupations that have a high concentration of millennials. Because most millennials came of age with the internet, they may have a slight advantage over other generations in these occupations.
  • Physically demanding – Three of the occupations with the highest concentrations of millennials are physically demanding. These occupations are bartenders, firefighters and paramedics.
  • Lack of experience – Some of the occupations millennials are the least likely to be employed in require many years of experience, something most millennials don’t have yet. For example the occupations with the fewest millennials are judges and chief executives.
  • Dying jobs – Millennials also seem to be avoiding jobs on the decline. Example of this include travel agents (just 12% of travel agents are millennials) and tailors, dressmakers and sewers (9% of millennials are tailors, dressmakers and sewers). According to BLS data on job outlook, the number of travel agents is expected to drop by 9% over the next decade.

SEE ALSO: Millennials are taking over offices around the country — here's where they work and how much they make

1. Statistician

This profession has the highest rate of millennials among its ranks (44%) and the median statistician is 35 years old. Of the 74,000 statisticians in the country, 33,000 are between the ages of 25 and 34.

This is one occupation which millennials are well placed to succeed in. The advent of big data availability and new technology to analyze it has made being a statistician a fast growing and lucrative occupation.

2. Bartenders

The second occupation which is most likely to be filled by a millennial is bartending. There are about 454,000 bartenders in the U.S., 190,000 of whom are between the age of 25 and 34. Bartenders are not particularly well paid, the median bartender earns only $20,800 per year.

That will make it hard for millennial bartenders to save up to buy a house or save for retirement. But there are some areas where bartenders do earn more. In the Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina area of Hawaii, for example, the average bartender earns about $45,500 per year.

3. Financial analyst

Financial analyst is a popular occupation for graduates with bachelor's degrees. Our data shows there are about 307,000 financial analysts in the U.S. and 126,000 of them are millennials. That means about two in five financial analysts are millennials.

This is a great career option for millennials and non-millennials alike. The average financial analyst makes almost $82,000 per year or about $39 per hour. The BLS also expects this occupation to grow faster than average over the coming years.

Google reveals the most searched-for athletes of 2017

aaron judge

2017 was a great year for sports.

The year started with the most dramatic comeback in Super Bowl history and never let up, with exciting storylines taking over baseball, basketball, and even boxing.

On Wednesday, Google released its top-trending searches of 2017 as part of their "Year in Search 2017," and the athletes that made the list vary from surprising to almost-too-obvious, ranging from breakout rookies to undefeated fighters and many more in between.

Below you can check out the most searched-for athletes of 2017, and learn a bit about what exactly made each of them so compelling to users.

10. Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah Thomas was one of the best stories in basketball last season, breaking out as a dominant player and leading the Celtics the top seed in the East. He became beloved in Boston, taking over games in the fourth quarter and wearing his emotions publicly.

Tragedy struck Thomas and his family when the postseason came around, when his sister died in a car accident just hours before he was to take the court for the Celtics. Thomas decided to play in the game, prompting a beautiful moment as the Boston crowd greeted him with a huge ovation.

After the Celtics' playoff run was ended by the Cavaliers, many thought that Thomas would be in Boston for the rest of his career, having become so beloved by the city. But the Cavs and Celtics instead decided to swap All-Star point guards in one of the biggest trades in recent memory.

Thomas is dealing with an ongoing injury, but is set to make his debut with the Cavaliers in the next few weeks, and LeBron is excited to bring him into the team's gameplan.

9. Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia had a year he will never forget in 2017. First and foremost, he won his first Green Jacket, taking the Masters after a dramatic final few holes against Justin Rose. He celebrated the win with his fiancée, and has now won over $70 million in his career.

He also became just the 8th player in history to hit a hole-in-one at the fabled No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass. In one story equal parts creepy and cool, a fan that tweeted at Garcia 206 days in a row got the opportunity of a lifetime, carrying his bag for a day.

Still, not every highlight was a good one for Sergio this season. He showed his frustration on the course on multiple occasions, and almost had to withdraw from The Open Championship after fighting a bush. In another tournament, Garcia broke his putter early in his round, leaving him to putt with his 3-wood for his remaining holes.

8. Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony was in the news this year for a plethora of reasons. Heading into 2017, his contentious relationship with the Knicks' front office was discussed in many NBA circles, with rumors of a looming trade to either Cleveland or Houston running rampant. After trading a few subtweets with Phil Jackson, and just before an awkward reunion at training camp, Melo's time with the Knicks came to a somewhat surprising end, with a trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

And soon after that, the legend of "Hoodie Melo" was born.

  • Tesla's Autopilot feature gives its cars the ability to drive autonomously in some situations.
  • While driving with Autopilot activated, a Tesla vehicle can regulate its speed, change lanes, and park without driver assistance.
  • Tesla customers can buy the Autopilot feature for $5,000.

The deadline is approaching for Tesla CEO Elon Musk to deliver on one of his loftiest predictions for the company. In October 2016, he said a Tesla car would drive itself from LA to New York City without any assistance from a human driver by the end of 2017. Musk made a slight revision to that statement in August, claiming the autonomous road trip would happen early in 2018 if he doesn't meet his original deadline.

But the self-driving capabilities in Tesla's cars are still ahead of the competition. The Autopilot system included in its cars can help drivers navigate highways and parking lots, and the company says every vehicle produced in its factory has the hardware for complete, autonomous driving that could be activated when the necessary software and government regulations come into place.

Here's what Tesla's Autopilot feature can do now, and what it might be able to do in the future:

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk reveals Tesla is making its own AI chips for self-driving cars — and he claims the technology will be the 'best in the world'

Tesla introduced its Autopilot feature in 2015. It gives its cars the ability to drive autonomously in some situations. Last year, the company rolled out new hardware on all of its vehicles. The new hardware suite enables the latest iteration of the driving system, which is called Enhanced Autopilot.

Tesla cars made since October 2016 come with eight cameras that have a complete, 360-degree range of vision around the car. Each of the cameras can see up to 250 meters away.

Twelve ultrasonic sensors make sure the car can recognize and avoid both hard and soft objects.

We compared Meghan Markle's and Kate Middleton's fashion choices — and the winner is clear

  • People are obsessing over Meghan Markle's fashion choices following her engagement to Prince Harry.
  • Her future sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, has been hugely influential in shaping fashion over the last decade.
  • The two have very different styles. Here's how they match up.

As the world obsesses over Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton seems to be taking cues from her future sister-in-law.

While being awarded gold Blue Peter badges for campaigning on children's mental health issues, Middleton and Prince William had a rare public display of affection. It was a simple knee touch, but a rare one for the typically stoic couple, and some wondered whether it had been inspired by Markle's and Prince Harry's on-camera cuddling.

It's rare for the royals to truly speak their mind in public. That goes double for Middleton and Markle — as women in the spotlight, anything they do can spark backlash. As a result, fashion can provide a way for royals to quietly express themselves with the public.

As Markle prepares to marry Harry, we found ourselves wondering how she would compare to Middleton when it comes to fashion. Here's how Markle measures up to the duchess.

SEE ALSO: Prince William and Kate Middleton broke from royal tradition with a rare public display of affection — and it might have been inspired by Meghan Markle

Let's start with a Markle specialty: movie premieres. As an actress, she has plenty of experience dressing for the red carpet.

It's a pretty simple look — little black dress with strappy heels. Cute, but nothing groundbreaking.

As a duchess, Middleton attends plenty of premieres herself. Here she is a year earlier, at the premiere of "War Horse."

Meet the Eve V (pronounced "Eve Vee") — a combination laptop/tablet hybrid, powered by Windows 10. It looks very much like Microsoft's excellent Surface Pro

But there's something a little different about the Eve V, which comes out of an Intel-backed Finnish startup.

Every aspect of the Eve V, from the design to the processor to the keyboard cover material, was decided with full and complete input from Eve's community of fans. Over a thousand people contributed their feedback to how the Eve V should be built, resulting in a device that — theoretically — meets the exacting needs of the most demanding users.

Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella asked for an Eve V to play around with, after the Eve crowdfunding campaign caught his eye.

I've been using the Eve V for a week, and I can say this: The Eve community should be proud. While there are a few spots where the wisdom of the crowd didn't quite come through, the Eve V is an outstanding first effort, with lots to recommend it, even when compared against Microsoft's own Surface Pro

That's why office holiday parties are such a minefield of awkward situations.

Many offices are doing away with alcohol, or the party altogether, in the wake of sexual misconduct scandals currently plaguing a range of industries.

But if your office is having festivities this year, it's crucial to remember that you're pretty much still at work, even if it's a party.

You need to be able to loosen up and enjoy yourself without looking like a complete fool or jeopardizing your job.

Business Insider spoke with HR and career professionals to highlight topics you'll want to avoid at your office holiday party:

DON'T MISS: 21 of the wildest office holiday party stories we've ever heard

1. 'Could you introduce me to your daughter/son?'

Avoid hitting on your coworkers' relatives. It's awkward and it won't end well.

"Be careful about jokes or crude remarks... there is nothing like your colleague asking to be introduced to your daughter that really makes the night and subsequent days at work uncomfortable," Rebecca Henderson, global group president of HR firm Randstad Sourceright, told Business Insider.

2. 'I never realized you had such an amazing body — the way you dress in the office is far too conservative'

TriNet director of human capital services Jackie Breslin said, "Give a compliment that is appropriate and won't make a coworker uncomfortable. A fair number of workplace complaints regarding inappropriate conduct have an origin at the company holiday party."

CEO of HR consulting firm OperationsInc. David Lewis agrees, noting that even statements as simple as "You look great" can come across as creepy. "Avoid anything that suggests anything sexual in lieu of the word 'great,'" he said.

On a similar note, the holiday party is usually not the time to confess your office crush.

"Don't use the holiday party as an excuse to share your intimate feelings with a colleague," said TopResume career advice expert Amanda Augustine.

Basically, don't forget that you're still at work.

3. 'Can I drive you home?'

If you and your coworkers have been drinking, it's important to make sure your coworkers are safe to drive. However, if you're not sure about a colleague's level of intoxication, you don't want to sound overbearing or off putting.

"Instead, try, 'I hate driving home after a party, don't you? Let's call it a night and call an Uber,'" said "All the Leader You Can Be" author Suzanne Bates."If alcohol is served, the one thing you don't want to say is 'Can I drive you home?'"

The 5 biggest mistakes couples make when they fight

couple fighting annoyed complain

  • "Loveologist" Wendy Strgar told INSIDER it's more about how you say something than the words you use.
  • Instead of complaining about an annoying thing your partner does, approach it as a problem to solve and grow from together.
  • Don't let your insecurities dictate your relationship with your partner.

Even the most romantic couples who have been madly in love for decades fight every now and then. It's a natural— and even healthy — part of being in a relationship.

Still, there are some things that you should never say to your partner no matter how upset you are.

INSIDER spoke to "loveologist"Wendy Strgar, founder of Good Clean Love and the author of "Love That Works" and "Sex That Works," about what couples should steer clear of.

Never belittle them during a tough conversation

Stooping to petty fights when there are deeper problems isn't productive.

"I believe what we most want to avoid when having hard conversations with our partner is both a tone of voice and harsh words that make them feel smaller in our eyes," said Strgar.

Don't speak harshly

Strgar believes that how you say something is more important than what you say. Whether you're asking your partner for a quick favor or working through a more difficult issue, keeping a respectful tone is key.

"The tone that we use in the smallest requests and in our biggest moments of revelation is probably more important than the content of the conversation," she said. "In memory, what we'll remember is the tone, not the words."

Don't complain about something they do

Instead of telling your partner how much something they do annoys you, Strgar recommends reframing the issue as a problem that you both want to solve and learn from.

Instead of saying "You always leave your dishes in the sink and it gets on my nerves," you can have a conversation about how household responsibilities can be divided more effectively.

"Expressing our unhappiness or complaints about someone else goes nowhere fast if the delivery just raises their defenses," said Strgar. "Approaching your issues as a shared problem to solve has the chance of becoming a mechanism for growth."

Take a look at the grimy and grueling training the Army uses to turn soldiers into snipers

US Army Fort Benning sniper school training

At the US Army's Sniper School at Fort Benning in Georgia, students undergo some of the most grueling training the force offers.

"Sniper school is one of the hardest schools in the military, not physically, but mentally," Staff Sgt. Brian Moran, one of the 11 instructors who oversees the training, told the Army News Service.

Army snipers face demanding missions and often operate with little or no support, and the training at Fort Benning tests their ability to work in isolation and under pressure.

Below, you can see some of the rigorous and, for many, overwhelming training that Army sniper candidates endure:

SEE ALSO: Take a look at how Army snipers zero in on their targets during specialized training

Over 300 candidates start the seven-week Sniper School course at Fort Benning each year. In early August, 46 soldiers were on hand for the first day. Each had already met demanding criteria, including navigation and marksmanship evaluations, physical-fitness tests, and psychological examinations.

"Snipers are often deployed in small two-man teams, which requires a great deal of mental fortitude to remain focused on the task at hand," said Moran, the Sniper School instructor. "If individuals have difficulty being isolated, there is a potential for mission failure."

After a battery of physical-fitness tests on the first day, candidates are taught to make a ghillie suit — a camouflage suit that uses foliage to break up the outline of the soldier's body.

Attorney Doug Jones became the newest US senator after he defeated Republican candidate Roy Moore in an upset election win on Tuesday night, topping off an impressive career in law to become the first Democratic senator from Alabama in over twenty years.

The son of a steelworker, Jones' enjoyed an impressive career as a US attorney and prosecutor. He famously put two Ku Klux Klan members in prison for their role in a 1963 bombing.

Here's how Jones' humble beginnings in Alabama led him to the US Senate:

6 details you may have missed on the 'Riverdale' mid-season finale

riverdale cheryl kevin jughead veronica

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season two, episode nine of "Riverdale," titled "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

Wednesday's episode of "Riverdale" was the last for the year, and there's a lot to think about.

After weeks of anticipation, the Black Hood's identity was revealed to be that of high school janitor Mr. Svenson. But this anticlimactic choice has some fans thinking maybe this was all a set up and we still don't actually know who's terrorizing the town.

But like always, "Riverdale" threw in some references to catch, and we worked with Archie Comics to uncover some of them.

Here are six details you may have missed from the mid-season finale.

"Riverdale" returns to The CW January 17 at 8 pm EST.

SEE ALSO: The 21 best TV shows of 2017

Veronica threw in some made up companies and words while talking about Christmas-related things — Spiffany's, Glamourgé egg, and American Excess.

Each of these are a play on real things — the jewelry retailer Tiffany’s, Fabergé eggs, and an American Express card.

The episode title, "Silent Night, Deadly Night," pulls its name from a slasher flick of the same name.

"Silent Night, Deadly Night" came out in 1984 and centers on a young kid whose parents were killed by a man dressed in a Santa suit. When he gets older, he has a breakdown and goes on a killing spree dressed as Santa. Putting the Black Hood in a Santa suit is a great homage.

Betty's dream with the Black Hood Santa directly pulls from "Twin Peaks."

In her dream, the Santa creepily crawls over the couch and heads directly for the camera. On an episode of "Twin Peaks," the killer, Bob, crawls over the couch the same way and goes into the camera in what is one of the most subtly terrifying moments on the show.

"Riverdale" has been frequently compared to "Twin Peaks" by fans and critics.

8 things to do in Paris that aren't total tourist traps

Paris

Climbing the Eiffel Tower, seeing the brushstrokes on Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, tearing apart a baguette and drinking wine straight out of the bottle on the Seine — the images of a trip to Paris are clear to anyone who has only seen the City of Light in guidebooks and movies.

And yet, real functioning, tourist-saturated cities are rarely as they appear on the big screen or glossy pages. Just as with any major city, Paris, though packed with inexplicable charm, is laden with tourist traps.

"Being a tourist isn't inherently a bad thing ‚— the city welcomes them!" said ex-pat and current Parisian Lindsey Tramuta, author of "The New Paris." She said she diligently avoids any restaurant hawking a menu in several languages, won’t buy souvenirs from peddlers outside major tourist sites, knows to avoid the waste-of-meal dinners on the exclusively-for-tourists Seine River Cruises, and admits that the Mona Lisa "is perhaps the most disappointing and over-hyped piece of art in any museum."

Stop wasting your precious time in Paris pushing past selfie sticks to get a view of something arbitrarily famous and enjoy the sights and tastes that make the French capital truly worth visit.

Indulge in an "escargot" (or many) at Du Pain et Des Idées

Arguably the best boulangerie in all of Paris, this corner side bakery is known to locals, who can be spotted buying meat and produce from a roving cart outside, or stopping by with little ones before or after school, and tourists, who wouldn’t miss a trip to this saccharine mainstay during any stop in Paris — taking an Uber over a just-long-enough-layover at CDG to stock up on baked goods here isn’t an unheard of idea.

The escargots, snail-free yet snail-shaped flaky pastries twisted with a variety of fruity, nutty or cheesy fillings are a must. Order at least an extra to tote along with you in a brown paper bag for a snack later in the day.

Eat "non-French" food

Most tourists come to France to well, eat French food and fulfill fantasies of epic cheese-pulls over French onion soup and spooning up steaming cocottes of coq au vin. And although a French culinary overload is never necessarily a bad idea, avoid nearly all tourists by heading to a super casual Chinese Traiteur (egg rolls for a euro!), fighting for a table at the popular hand-pulled noodle spot Les Pates Vivantes or checking out a trendy world cuisine hotspot, like the recently opened Kanna Tanna.

Dine at Bouillon Pigalle

Tramuta recommended this recently-renovated restaurant with "the same high energy and low prices as a traditional Bouillon but far better products and better service."

Skip the tourist-packed Le Bouillon Chartier and opt for affordable and well-executed French classics like œufs mayo, pâté en croûte, poireau vinaigrette, and pot au feu at this trendy Bouillon just down the block from the Moulin Rouge.

The best teeth whitening kits you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

teeth 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The best teeth whitening kits come with everything you need to whiten your teeth, are easy to use, and do not irritate your gums or teeth. The Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder has all of these features, plus it’s affordable, does not use harmful chemicals, and comes in different flavors.

Let’s face it. Some of the most addictive beverages and habits are not the best for our pearly whites. Fortunately, if you want white teeth, you don’t have to say goodbye to coffee, soda, sweets, tea, wine, and smoking because there are many teeth whitening kits to choose from (we still recommend that you kick the smoking habit for obvious reasons).

Teeth whitening is a $3.2 billion worldwide industry. Consequently, there are thousands of options out there, including expensive services at your dentist’s office. Thankfully, if you want to save money, there are several effective kits that you can use at home.

There are essentially two types of kits: ones that bleach your teeth to take stains off and ones that physical scrape off the stains. Activated charcoal powders have become quite popular in recent years. They are applied with a toothbrush and scrape stains off. Whitening trays and strips have been the standard for decades and generally rely on carbamide or hydrogen peroxide.

There is a third type of teeth whitening product that simply blasts your teeth with LED light. However, experts interviewed by the Wirecutter say any gains from this treatment are short-lived. Only the GLO Brilliant system in our guide uses this technology, but it is used in conjunction with a whitening gel.

A few warnings about teeth whitening kits

Peroxide is effective, but it comes with several warnings. Pregnant or nursing women should not use peroxide-based whitening products. It also isn’t for children under fourteen years old. And, you should not use peroxide for longer than two weeks of daily use without the supervision of a dentist.

The FDA does not recommend using any whitening gels with a peroxide concentration of higher than 18%. Two of the kits we recommend use peroxide (Crest Whitestrips and GLO Brilliant), but they should be safe for most people.

You need to be careful using whitening products, as Consumer Reports explains. Always consult with your dentist before starting a course of treatment. For instance, if your darkened teeth are due to the natural thinning of tooth enamel that comes with aging, whitening kits will not help you. Also, they cannot whiten fillings, dentures, veneers, crowns, or caps.

Experts say that whitening kits are safe when used as directed. However, gum irritation and tooth sensitivity are common side effects even when you follow the directions. Therefore, about a week before you start your whitening regimen, use a toothpaste specifically designed for people with sensitive teeth or one that builds up enamel. And, skip a day or two of use if you do experience sensitivity.

We undertook hours of research combing through both consumer and expert reviews and ratings before settling on the whitening kits we’ve included in this guide. Each of the teeth whitening kits we feature in the following slides are effective, easy to use, and unlikely to irritate your teeth or gums.

Read on to learn why the Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder is our top pick and why you might prefer the Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips, the Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips Kit by Utilax, the GLO Science Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Device, and the Miswak Club Natural Teeth Whitening Kit.

The best charcoal teeth whitening kit

Why you'll love it: If you are looking for an alternative to chemical whitening treatments, the Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder is an excellent choice that shows results after a few treatments.

The three main ingredients of the Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder are charcoal powder, bentonite, and orange seed oil. The powder is made from organic coconut activated charcoal powder. It pulls stains from your teeth using an “adsorption” process. The high mineral content of the bentonite remineralizes your teeth. And, the orange seed oil is added for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

To use the powder, you simply dip a wet toothbrush (we do not recommend using an electric brush) into the powder and brush the front of your teeth for a minute or two. Then, rinse thoroughly. You only need a little bit of the powder for each brushing, which makes this product a great value. The Active Wow Charcoal Powder comes in six flavors, including natural, cinnamon, orange, and peppermint.

One of my colleagues at Business Insider received a test unit of the Charcoal Powder, and she noticed an impressive difference after just a few uses. Though, she noted that there was not an immediate change like you might experience from one of the bleaching products out there, such as strips.

BuzzFeed also took this Active Wow product for a test drive. Its review is best summed up by the headline: “This Charcoal Teeth Whitener Is So Good, I'm Convinced It's Actually Magic.” The reviewer recommends buying a separate toothbrush for the treatment since it turns your bristles black.

The Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder has more than 10,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. The most helpful reviews on Amazon show clear evidence of the product’s effectiveness with before and after pictures.

However, there are a few complaints about how messy it is. One user recommended brushing in the shower since you can easily rinse the area off when you’re done. Another minor issue is that it takes a bit of work to get all of the tiny charcoal particles out of your teeth.

Pros: Dramatic results after just a few uses, short application time, doesn’t make teeth sensitive

Cons: Messy

Buy the Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder on Amazon for $24.79 (originally $29.99)

The best teeth whitening strips

Why you'll love it: If the idea of putting charcoal in your mouth or resting a tray on your teeth doesn’t sound appealing, Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips are an effective, dentist-recommended way to get whiter teeth.

The Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips kit comes with 40 strips for 20 treatments (each treatment consists of a strip on the upper teeth and one on the lower teeth.) You are supposed to wear the strips for half an hour once per day.

Crest's “Advanced Seal Technology” offers a no-slip grip, which allows you to drink water and talk while wearing the strips. Crest claims that after the 20 daily treatments, you can remove 14 years of tooth stains. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the active ingredients in the Whitestrips.

Babble recommended the Professional Effects Whitestrips because they produce whiter, brighter teeth in just four applications. However, the reviewer found that the treatments may be too harsh for sensitive teeth.

Business Insider interviewed professional dentist Dr. Neil Hadaegh DDS to get his recommendations for the best whitening products. He recommended Crest's strips because of the lower hydrogen peroxide levels of about 10%, which should be entirely safe.

Lastly, Good Housekeeping rated the Crest 3D Whitestrips as the winner in its tooth whitener test because of its easy application and excellent results.

The Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips have four- or five-star ratings from more than 5,000 reviewers on Amazon. Buyers report that they see impressive results in as few as five treatments.

There are several tips from users who have used these strips for a while. For example, you should not let the strips rest on your gums, or you will experience irritation. Also, avoid brushing your teeth before using the strips to reduce the chance of tooth sensitivity.

Pros: Produces results in four or five uses, recommended by dentists, low peroxide levels

Cons: May irritate the gums or cause tooth sensitivity

Buy the Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips on Amazon for $35.99 (20 treatments) or $46.45 (28 treatments)

The best teeth whitening kit on a budget

Why you'll love it: If keeping a tray in your mouth for half an hour doesn’t sound ideal, the Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips Kit by Utilax is a great alternative.

The Utilax Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips Kit comes with fourteen pouches containing two whitening strips, one for your upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. The strips do not contain peroxide, but it is unclear what the active ingredient is, and requests for this information have not been answered by Utilax. However, they claim their strips are “100% safe to use.”

It works like most whitening strips. Use dry hands to remove the backing film from the strip, line up the sticky gel side along the edge of your gums, apply pressure to mold the strip to the teeth. After one to two hours peel the strip off. Utilax states that this product comes with a 100% lifetime money-back guarantee.

Best 10 Anything put the Utilax Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips at the top of its list of the best teeth whitening kits. The writer found that it produced noticeable results after a single use, is easy to apply, and does not peel off before you are done. However, the reviewer notes that the strips may not come off easily when you want them off.

The10Pro also included this option in its review of the top whitening products because the strips are big enough for teeth of any size, they are flexible and mold to your teeth, and the strips do not contain potentially harmful compounds, like bleach or peroxide.

This Utilax product appears to be quite polarizing in the Amazon buyer reviews. There are currently 99 five-star ratings and 5 one-star ratings with no reviews between those extremes. Buyers who liked this kit were impressed with how gentle it is on the gums and teeth, how it sticks to your teeth and does not move, and that it acts quickly.

One of the upset customers complained that the instructions advise the user to wear the strips for up to two hours. Another unhappy shopper received an empty box with no strips in it. Of course, this is a problem that Amazon sellers will fix.

Pros: Adheres firmly to your teeth, excellent for sensitive teeth, doesn’t contain peroxide

Cons: Have to wear the strips for up to two hours, hard to remove

Buy the Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips Kit by Utilax on Amazon for $24.95

Professions that are probably going to win big from tax reform

cheer wealthy women happy rich

• House and Senate Republicans have worked out a final tax plan, which includes a 20% deduction for certain pass-through businesses.

Business Insider's Pedro Nicolaci da Costa wrote this will "disproportionately benefit the wealthy" by allowing rich business owners to avoid higher individual tax rates.

Small Business Labs estimates the plan's pass-through policy will only benefit top earners.

The finalized Republican tax plan throws a 20% tax deduction the way of pass-through businesses.

Pass-through businesses — including LLCs and S-corporations — don't pay corporate taxes. Instead, income "passes through" to the owner, who then pays taxes on the earnings.

The House initially proposed a 25% deduction, while the Senate's initial plan called for a 23% deduction.

The measure has been criticized as a huge boost to the 1%. According to Small Business Labs, this provision stands to benefit only the wealthiest of pass-through business owners, and will not likely apply to highly-paid professionals who run "service firms," including doctors and lawyers.

Business Insider's Elena Holodny reported the wealthiest American households "stand to benefit handsomely from the plan," with a $10 million household income receiving an annual tax cut of over $200,000.

Here's a look at some occupations that are likely to benefit most from the plan:
