The Ridiculous Supercars Of The Dubai Police Force

dubai police lamborghini aventador

Dubai's reputation for extravagance now applies to its police as well.

The force has been building up its vehicle fleet recently, and it's not worrying about cost, adding a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, and more — some of them worth more than a million dollars.

There's little practical use for a two-seat police car — where do you keep suspects under arrest? — but the force has said the outrageous vehicles serve to "enhance its patrolling abilities."

No, that doesn't mean they're for high-speed car chases. "We have never exceeded the speed limit on the highway," Lt. Mariam Al Kaabi told Abu Dhabi's The National.

Rather, Dubai's police chief reportedly said on Twitter, the ultra-expensive rides were selected for "acting classy with people."

One of the newest acquisitions is a Chevy Camaro SS. Its 6.2-liter V8 engine produces 426 horsepower, not enough to match most of the cars on this list.

This Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG runs for about $200,000, has room for two, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds.

Red leather makes for a nicer interior that what most cops get to enjoy.

One of the most highly anticipated events in finance every year is the exclusive Sohn Investment Conference, which is in its 18th year.

Speakers this year included heavy hitters like David Einhorn, Bill Ackman, Jim Chanos, and Kyle Bass.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated speaker at the event was bond god Jeff Gundlach, the brilliant mind who nailed his calls on Treasury bonds, natural gas, and most recently Apple.

Titled "Investment Cubism 2013," Gundlach's presentation addressed the discrepancy between corporate and main street America, the extraordinarily risky efforts by the Fed, and the heavy debt load accumulated by the U.S. government.

All of this was presented in the context of Gundlach's investment themes.  Among other things, he's avoiding gold, avoiding insurance companies, long home price gains, and he's short Chipotle.

"I don't believe in any business where all you need to be competitive is a taco truck.

These are the must-see charts every investor must consider before making their next move.

Thanks to DoubleLine Funds for giving us permission to feature this presentation.

Reddit Users Share Their Most Unusual MacGyver Moments

Angus MacGyver, the main character of the timeless television show, has escaped many a fate with nothing more than the random objects he has in front of him.

Over on Reddit, users are sharing their best "MacGyver moments," where they were able to extricate themselves from sticky situations using non-obvious tools.

One user fixed a $250,000 satellite antenna with aluminum foil.

"Working on a ship in the Arctic. New satellite antenna installed in Norway isn't working quite right. Would periodically fail to transmit and would often drop the connection entirely.

"Figured it was interference from the closely located ship radar array (the spinning things you see on top of large ships).

"Got a roll of heavy duty tinfoil from the kitchen, went topside, and wrapped everything in the radome in aluminum foil, aside from the dish.

"Fixed it."

You can unfreeze your car doors by peeing on them.

"Me and my friend went to a ski slope in his old Skoda (86 model, looked like a 60s car). It was cold that night and after the skiing the doors of the Skoda had all frozen. My friend fixed it by pulling the rubber seal of one of the windows, he then proceeded to pee through the gap by the window onto the locking mechanism inside the door so he could unlock it. Problem solved."

You can perform minor surgery with a piece of wire.

"We used a piece of wire found in the earthquake rubble as a stylet to intubate a baby after the earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti. Not exactly the 'right' way to do it, but at that point it doesn't really matter.

"Here is a slideshow of a bunch of the pictures I took on that trip. Hopefully they can clear up any misconceptions about how little equipment my particular team had to work with and how bad the situation was."

These 17 Agencies Make Up The Most Sophisticated Spy Network In The World

$
0
0

Zero Dark ThirtyThe U.S. intelligence community is vast, composed of 17 distinct organizations each operating under its own shroud of secrecy.

Oversight of these agencies generally falls to the Department of Defense or Congress, leaving the average citizen with precious little knowledge of how they operate.

Funded by largely classified budgets, it's difficult to assess how much the U.S. annually spends on these clandestine operations, but one 2012 estimate pegs the cost at about $75 billion.

The following slides highlight the expansive reach of the U.S. intelligence community.

The Central Intelligence Agency spies on foreign governments and organizes covert ops.

The CIA is the most well-known U.S. spying agency, formed by the passage of the National Security Act of 1947. The agency has its roots with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) that operated during World War II.

Headquarters: Langley, Va.

Mission: CIA collects, analyzes, and disseminates intelligence gathered on foreign nations. This comes through signals and human intelligence sources.

Budget: Classified. On their website, the CIA states, "neither the number of employees nor the size of the Agency's budget can, at present, be publicly disclosed. A common misconception is that the Agency has an unlimited budget, which is far from true."

There have been some slips, however. In 2005, a CIA deputy director inadvertently revealed the annual intelligence budget was $44 billion.

The National Security Agency was once so secretive it was jokingly called 'No Such Agency.'

The NSA was established in 1952 with a mission primarily dedicated to code breaking, after the Allies' success in cracking German and Japanese codes during World War II. For a long time, the NSA, which operates under the Dept. of Defense, was not even recognized by the government, commonly referred to as "No Such Agency."

Headquarters: Fort Meade, Md.

Mission: The main functions of the NSA are signals intelligence — intercepting and processing foreign communications, cryptology — cracking codes, and information assurance. IA is, put simply: preventing foreign hackers from getting secret information.

Budget: Classified. Some estimate the NSA is actually the largest intelligence organization in the world — three times the size of the CIA. The headquarters alone takes up 6.3 million square feet — around the same size as the Pentagon — with 112 acres of parking spaces, reports the Washington Post.

The Defense Intelligence Agency works to understand what foreign militaries will do before they do it.

The DIA was established in 1961 with the goal of sharing information collected by the major military intelligence outfits (such as Army or Marine Corps Intelligence). More recently, the DIA has been expanding its overseas spy network to collect first-hand intelligence.

Headquarters: Washington, D.C.

Mission: The DIA serves as the lead intelligence agency for the Dept. of Defense, coordinating analysis and collection of intelligence on foreign militaries, in addition to surveillance and reconnaissance operations. The DIA is the common link between military and national intelligence agencies.

Budget: Classified. The DIA does not reveal budget information, although they do say they have more than 16,500 men and women working for them and are under DoD and congressional oversight.

12 Reasons The American Energy Boom Is Totally Overrated

$

oil pump derrick desertThe fossil fuel industry is booming, and has a lot more room to run, thanks to incredible technological progress in oil and gas production from shale rock.

In theory, this should create jobs, lower energy costs, and bring manufacturing capacity back to the U.S.

By some accounts, the economy is cleaning up on this.

But analysts now say that while there are real gains to be had, we should be a bit more realistic about their extent.

In his new book "The Power Surge," Council on Foreign Relations expert Michael Levi says that while it's undeniable the oil and gas boom has created jobs and wealth, it's overall impact on GDP will probably be muted.

"People who claim that natural gas will spark a broad-based U.S. economic renaissance, if only pesky environmentalists lay off, are exaggerating the benefits of the shale gas bonanza," he writes.

He's not alone — we recently told you about the note from Capital Economics' Paul Dales, who says, "The boom in domestic energy production is responsible for only a small part of the rise in GDP since the recession and it does not explain why the US has outperformed most of its closest competitors."

We've compiled just a few charts that demonstrate why, outside of the energy industry itself, we're probably not going to see all that big of a spill-over effect from shale oil and gas production into the broader economy.

According to the BEA, the U.S. mining sector, which includes oil and gas production, contributed a measly 7/100ths of a point to the 2.2 GDP growth we saw in 2012.

Basically, a nudge.

Energy intensive industries are adding about 10% less value than all manufacturers.

Same for sectors that are utilities intensive.

Relative to the rest of the economy, the energy intensive industries aren't outperforming.

It's pretty much stayed even.

13 Slides That Landed Two Founders $500,000 In 3 Months

Leonhard Widrich Joel bufferLeonhard Widrich and Joel Gascoigne were classmates at England's University of Warwick. The pair founded a startup together called Buffer, that helps you share Tweets, Facebook posts and LinkedIn updates more intelligently.

Seven weeks later, Buffer started generating revenue. Widrich dropped out of school and Gascoigne left his full-time job to grow their company. After two years of bootstrapping and growing the userbase to 55,000 accounts, the pair booked a one-way ticket to San Francisco.

They created a 13-slide pitch. Three months later, they rounded up $500,000 from 18 angel investors including HubSpot CTO Dharmesh Shah, Mightytext co-founder Maneesh Arora, and AngelList's Graham Jenkin.

For two first-time founders, three months to raise a round sounds quick. But Widrich says he and Gascoigne spoke with over 200 potential investors during that time frame and had more than 50 meetings to finally find the 18 people who said "yes."

"We learned you have to do a lot of meetings to actually get investment," Widrich says. "Hearing 'no' up to 10 times a day was definitely one of the toughest things."

Today, Buffer is generating over $1 million in annual revenue with over 650,000 users.

What did the winning pitch look like? Widrich shared the 13 slides with Business Insider.

12 Things You Never Knew You Could Do With Your iPad (AAPL)

$

tim cook ipad miniThe iPad is a more capable device than a lot of people may realize.

Despite iOS being a scaled-down operating system, there are loads of features buried inside of it, and it's robust enough to run some powerful apps on top of it.

These are our favorite features and capabilities (whether native or app-assisted) in our iPads.

Access your home computer and use it from anywhere in the world

We've been using and loving iTeleport ($19.99) as a means to access our computer at home while we're out and about with our iPad. Start and stop large downloads, email yourself files you need while you're mobile, or scare your family by playing music from an empty room.

You'll come up with plenty of your own creative ways to use this app.

Remotely wake up your home computer

If you want to use the previously mentioned VNC software and your computer is set to go to sleep after a certain period of inactivity, you need to wake it up before remotely accessing it.

A number of apps support a protocol called "Wake On LAN." All this means is that they can push a signal from your router to your computer to wake it up. Then you can fire up your VNC app to take care of whatever you like.

We recommend iNet WOL ($1.99).

Use it as a media remote

Your iPad can control your computer or other AirPlay compatible device and act as a remote for controlling your music and video. Just make sure everything's on the same WiFi network.

If you want to take advantage of this, pick up Apple's Remote app (free).

The Sweet Life Of Carmelo Anthony: How NYC's Biggest NBA Star Spends His Millions

carmelo anthony hipsterCarmelo Anthony has always been on the fringes of the NBA elite — both on and off the court.

While he has won scoring titles, he has never been considered a top-3 player.

And while he has made more than $90 million in his NBA career, he has never been a mega-brand like LeBron James or an advertising-darling like Blake Griffin.

But with his move to New York a couple of years ago — and the Knicks' on-court success this season — he's finally starting to gain respect as a player and a brand.

And he has been able to enjoy all the perks (houses, parties, and a lovely wife), that being a superstar in NYC brings with it.

Carmelo made $22.9 million in 2012, according to Forbes.

Much of that came on the court. He has made $94 million in salary in his 10-year NBA career.

His other income (~$8 million per year) comes from endorsements with companies like Foot Locker and Degree.

All This Late-Night Debauchery At 'Club Applebee's' Helped Boost Its Stock

Applebee'sMost people don't know that in some parts of the U.S., Applebee's restaurants — the most middle of all middle-market fast casual chains — turn into alcohol-fueled party dens after 10 p.m.

At "Club Applebee's," dancing on tables, black lights, and DJs are not uncommon. We published a story last August showcasing the clubs. The debauchery — girls licking whipped cream off each other, for instance — took place at a few restaurants in Central Florida. People were "hanging from the rafters on Thursday nights down there,” Bloomberg noted at the time.

We reported that the clubs were not part of Applebee's' regular marketing strategy ... which made us curious. What was the deal with the random club scenes at our "Neighborhood Bar & Grill"?

After a conversation with representatives of the Applebee's brand, we have some updates on Club Applebee's. They managed to clear some things up for us regarding what has been going down after dark at their restaurants. The good news? Club Bee's is still going strong.

As it turns out, Applebee's wasn't too pleased when Club Applebee's made headlines last year. Which is understandable for a restaurant targeting traditional families, like this one.

According to a PR representative, most of the stories from August 2012 focused on photos of an "extremely dated" event sponsored by a radio station that "was not aligned with the brand's values."

The rep explained to us that all but 23 Applebee's nationwide are owned by independent franchisees—smaller management companies that operate the branches in their region.

George Takei hosted the event.

Although he is best known for his role on "Star Trek," Takei has also dipped his toes in the advertising world. Here he is in an Old Navy ad.

15 Corporate Logos That Contain Subliminal Messaging

tostitos logo

Whether you realize it or not, a brand's logo speaks to its viewer on many levels.

There's the initial recognizability factor—if a logo is too complex or unrelated to its brand, it risks being glanced over without communicating its brand's message. For that reason, modern logos tend to err on the side of boldness and simplicity.

But a closer look at many logos reveals more subtle marketing tactics.

You may have noticed the subliminal features of some of these designs in the past. But have you looked hard enough to see them all?

FedEx — The FedEx logo hides an arrow in its negative space. Even a glance subliminally inspires thoughts of efficiency and forward motion.

Vaio — This cool logo for Sony's computers represents the brand's integration of analog and digital technology. The 'VA' is designed as an analog waveform, the 'IO' is binary code.

Baskin Robbins — This logo, introduced in 2005, cleverly uses the company's initials to advertise its number of ice cream flavors (31).

What Life Is Like For The Bangladeshis Who Make Your Clothes

Bangladesh factory slum
The
death toll in April's Bangladesh garment factory collapse has now soared past 1,000. It's been called the worst industrial disaster in the country's history.

But it's hardly the first.

These disasters are becoming more common as infrastructure ages.

Meanwhile, working conditions and pay for the Bangladeshis who work in these clothing factories are among the world's worst.

Bangladesh has become the world's second-largest clothing exporter, in part because companies have moved production there to take advantage of shockingly low wages and the lightest regulations in the world.

Many U.S. and European retailers import clothing from Bangladesh, including popular brands such as H&M and Benetton.

The low prices we pay for these clothes are tied directly to the low wages and working conditions of the Bangladeshis who make them.

The garment industry is huge in Bangladesh, accounting for 80% of the country's exports last year. These exports total $20 billion.

Source: The Wall Street Journal

The women pictured here work 10-hour days and make $57 per month. Assuming a 50-hour week, that's 29 cents an hour. The minimum wage for garment workers is $38 per month.

Western brands have been making clothes for cheap in emerging markets for centuries. These days Bangladesh is the place with the lowest wages.

10 Awesome Cultural Tours That Will Make You Feel Like A Local

$

vietnam kayaking cave

It’s an old travel cliché: Americans go to Paris and eat at McDonald’s.

While this is an unfair stereotype, it’s not unheard of for visitors in a foreign country to spend so much time with other like-minded vacationers at top tourist destinations that they never uncover the more underground, local attractions.

It’s hardly a traveler’s fault—how can a culturally curious tourist find genuine local experiences in a world of sanitized tourist traps?

Look no further! Here are ten exclusive cultural experiences that offer the opportunity to interact with locals and learn firsthand about their country and customs.

Santiago, Chile

The capital of Chile is a bustling modern metropolis framed by the towering Andes. With its 19th century neoclassical architecture, elegant parks and colonial plazas, it’s a dream destination for anyone headed to South America.

To really dig into local Santiguan culture, enjoy the three Ds (dinner, dining and drinks) with a local guide. Start your night with tapas and pisco sours, followed by stops at two traditional “picadas” (bars) where you can chat with locals and soak up the sounds of bolero and tango music.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Hundreds of thousands of tourists will be flocking to Brazil in the next four years for the World Cup and the Olympics. While they’ll be lured by the siren song of fútbol and sport, it would be a shame to miss out on one of the cornerstones of Brazilian culture: the samba. Sure, you could hit a samba performance and call it a night, but why not embrace a dose of Brazilian enthusiasm and take a class instead? Learn to swivel your hips with a one hour dance class at a Copacabana samba school and then hit the streets for a night of revelry in Rio’s famous dance clubs!

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech’s ancient red walls and bustling souks offer a totally immersive cultural experience in and of themselves. But sometimes, to really get to know a country, you need to get a little messy. In this case, we’re talking about a kitchen mess. A half-day cooking lesson with a local Moroccan chef means six hours’ worth of culinary adventure – such as learning to use local herbs, spices, oils and traditional conical cooking pots to make spicy tagines. Add in a little wine, and you have the makings of a perfect cultural culinary experience.

7 Personal Finance Experts Share The Best Advice They Got From Their Moms

$
0

helaineWhether they're full-time homemakers or big time movers and shakers, moms just aren't getting enough credit these days.

When you consider that they must rear a human child and then condition him or her for survival in the crazy world we live in, the fact that some would only estimate their value at $66,000/year is startling.

Women are emerging not only as breadwinners in the home but money managers as well. Nearly 60% of working mothers say they hold the reins on their household expenses alone and another 30% share the responsibility with their partners.

In light of Mother's Day, we thought we'd celebrate by asking some bright personal finance minds some of the most important money lessons their moms ever taught them.

"Never rely on someone else to take care of you –– not even your husband."

"My mom's best money advice is to never be financially dependent on anyone, including my husband. She told me time and again to make my own money, have my own career and build my own credit.

And her advice doesn't stem from being financially jilted by a man –– she's been married to my father for over 40 years and her parents were married for almost 60 years. Instead, she recognized the importance of financial independence (especially for women) and insisted I take the necessary steps to cultivate a stable lifestyle for myself."

––Kendal Perez, blogger at HassleFreeSavings.com

"Don't be afraid of banks. Be better than them."

"There are far too many people who demonize the financial services environment and cause us to fear banks, fear credit cards and fear debt. That's just silly.

I was always taught by my parents that it's better to understand and leverage the financial services system than it was to be scared of it and avoid it."

––John Ulzheimer, CEO of SmartCredit.com

"You're never too young to have a side hustle."

"While I was fortunate enough to always have what I needed growing up, any extras were on me. Starting at age 12 or so I worked weekends and summers at my mom’s store coupled with other jobs, like babysitting and busing tables.

I saved my little paychecks namely for concerts, vintage clothing shopping excursions and special trips to Newbury Comics in Boston for Duran Duran Japanese 12 imports. All those years saving for those little extras instilled in me a solid work ethic and a penchant for saving my pennies."

Argentina Ghost Town Re-Emerges After Being Underwater For 25 Years [PHOTOS]

An Argentianian town has re-emerged after being underwater for 25 years, The Associated Press reports.

In the 1920s Villa Epecuen, located in the farmlands 340 miles south of Buenos Aires, was established as a tourist village along the shore of Lago Epecuen.

The saltwater lake has 10 times more salt than the ocean — making the water buoyant — and tourists from Buenos Aires' large Jewish community flocked there to float in water that reminded them of the Dead Sea.

The town thrived for decades — its population topped 5,000 in the 1970s — before the lake overflowed its banks on Nov. 10, 1985, and flooded the town.

From the AP:

Then a particularly heavy rainstorm followed a series of wet winters, and the lake overflowed its banks on Nov. 10, 1985. Water burst through a retaining wall and spilled into the lakeside streets. People fled with what they could, and within days their homes were submerged under nearly 10 meters (33 feet) of corrosive saltwater.

The AP notes that one man, Pablo Novak, refused to leave and still lives on the edge of the town.

Now the water has mostly receded, creating a post-apocalyptic landscape, and the 82-year-old Novak welcomes people who visit to wander the wrecked streets.

george clooney mom nina warrenWhile most stars opt to bring their significant others to red carpet events, these celebs share the spotlight with the women that have been there from the very beginning.

Take a look at which celebrities who bring their mothers to the Oscars, Emmys, and movie premieres.

More from Zimbio:

1. Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefy

Everyone was surprised when Selena Gomez turned up with her mom Mandy Teefey at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Not that we have a thing against moms, we just expected then-boyfriend Justin Bieber to be the singer's date to all red carpet events.

2. Ryan Gosling and Donna Gosling

While plenty of us would LOVE to attend the Oscars with Ryan Gosling, the actor selected two special ladies to accompany him in 2007: his mom, Donna, and sister, Mandi. Donna would eventually become her son's go-to date for all major red carpet events.

3. Justin Timberlake and Lynn Harless

Here's another star who opted to bring his mom instead of his girlfriend to the Academy Awards. Justin Timberlake seemed to have a great time with his mom Lynn Harless at the 2010 Oscars. But don't worry, he met up with Jessica Biel at the after party.
