All the powerful black outfits that the women of Hollywood wore to the 2018 Golden Globes

all black looks golden globes

Black dresses dominated the red carpet at the 75th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. But this wasn't just a fashion statement.

Women attending the awards show wore black to take a stand against sexual harassment as a part of the Time's Up initiative.

Here's what some of Hollywood's biggest stars wore on the red carpet.

If you are a victim of sexual assault, you can visit RAINN or call its hotline at 1-800-656-4673 to receive confidential support from a trained staff member.

Emma Watson walked the red carpet with Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan, a women's organization "aimed at responding to and preventing violence against black minoritized women and girls."

"We've been working together this year and when Michelle Williams spearheaded the idea of actresses bringing activists on the red carpet, my first thought was, 'It would be so great to do it with Marai, because we have fun together, we challenge each other,'"Watson told E! News.

Halle Berry and Reese Witherspoon posed together on the red carpet.

Witherspoon also walked the red carpet with Eva Longoria. "Honored to stand with this woman and women everywhere tonight for equality, parity, safety and inclusion,"the actress tweeted.

Eva Longoria said, "This is not a moment, it's a movement."

In response to Carson Daly, Longoria said, "This is not a moment, it's a movement. Tonight is just one small part of that."

There are 10 comic-book movies coming out this year — here they all are

guardians of the galaxy avengers infinity war

We're still expecting over 20 superhero movies to come to the big screen between now and 2020. But which ones are coming in 2018?

Most people are hyped for the next "Avengers" movie, but there's much more than Marvel's "Infinity War" to get excited over if you love superheroes.

From R-rated laugh-fests to another DC Comics installment, keep reading to see which heroes — and villains — we'll see on the big screen this year.

SEE ALSO: Here are all the confirmed original shows coming to Netflix in 2018

Chadwick Boseman will start the year out with his own "Black Panther" solo movie.

Release date: February 16

What it's about: Before we get to the summer, Disney's next Marvel movie will follow T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) after the events of "Captain America: Civil War." After the death of his father, he returns home to take his rightful place as king of Wakanda. That's not going to sit well with an old foe (Michael B. Jordan).

Why you should see it: The star-studded cast includes Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, and "The Walking Dead" actress Danai Gurira. Fans have been waiting since Black Panther's first comic-book appearance in 1966 for the character to get some recognition on the big screen.

Watch the trailer here.

"Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams will join the "X-Men" universe in "The New Mutants."

Release date: April 13

What it's about: Sophie Turner isn't the only "Game of Thrones" star to head to Fox's "X-Men" franchise. The spin-off looks like a horror movie following five mutants who are trying to escape a hospital-like facility.

Why to see it: The first trailer for the film looks unlike any "X-Men" movie we've seen and that's a good thing. Since the success of "Deadpool" and "Logan," Fox has really started leaning into R-rated superhero movies.

Plus, Charlie Heaton from "Stranger Things" and "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams are in it.

Watch the movie's first creepy trailer here.

All of Disney's Marvel characters will come together in "Avengers: Infinity War."

Release date: May 4

What it's about: The third "Avengers" movie will unite the group with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and more as they go up against Gamora's father Thanos (Josh Brolin). He's been slowly curating six powerful Infinity Stones that have appeared throughout Marvel's many movies. (You can read more on those here.)

Why to see it: We'll get to see just about every single one of Disney's Marvel characters appear on the big screen together fighting alongside each other to take down a team of baddies. If you've been invested in any of Disney's Marvel movies for the last decade, this is the moment you've been waiting for.

Mystery children and sibling rivalries — this is Kim Jong Un's family tree

kim il-sung kim jong-il

  • The Kim family has long kept quiet about exactly who belongs to their sprawling, complex family tree.
  • But thanks mostly to South Korean intelligence, we have a pretty good idea.

Few political figures have drawn such intense curiosity as the secretive Kim Jong Un and the people believed to make up his family tree.

Even though Kim has become the face of North Korea to the world in recent years in light of his missile testing, feuds with President Donald Trump, and tendency to make outrageous public statements, Kim comes from a line of Communist Party dignitaries and North Korean heads of state that stretches back to the end of World War II.

Like his father and grandfather, Kim keeps key details about his family withheld from the public, giving few clues about the lives of his wife and young children. But the penchant for privacy hasn't stopped international media and South Korean intelligence from attempting to learn all they can about him.

In honor of what is believed to be the supreme leader's 34th birthday, here's a look at the mysterious North Korean figures that make up his family tree.

Kim Jong Un is at the center of a complex and secretive family tree.

The leader of the Hermit Kingdom, like his ancestors, has offered scant information about his family members.

He is only one of three sons, and, surprisingly, he's the youngest of them all.

Though it's typical for the eldest son to become the heir to the title of Supreme Leader, his older brothers — Kim Jong Chol and his half-brother Kim Jong Nam — were bypassed in favor of Kim Jong Un.

Kim Jong Chol is Kim Jong Un's older brother who was supposedly going to succeed Kim Jong Il until he was rejected in favor of Kim Jong Un.

Kim Jong Il reportedly rejected Kim Jong Chol from leadership because "he is like a little girl."

9 weird things that happen to your body when it's cold — and 3 things that make it worse

0
0

what happens to your body when it's cold

When the temperature drops below freezing, the human body uses these incredible mechanisms to try to stay warm.

1. Your blood vessels constrict

Your body is built to always maintain a stable core temperature of 37 degrees Celsius (that's 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). When the temperature in your environment drops, thermoreceptors in your skin sound the alarm, alerting an area of the brain called the hypothalamus, which acts like a thermostat dedicated to maintaining that 37 degree equilibrium, according to Robert Kenefick, PhD, research physiologist at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. One of the first actions the hypothalamus takes: It tightens the blood vessels in your arms, hands, feet, and legs. "Blood delivers heat to the skin," says Gordon Giesbrecht, PhD, professor of thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba in Canada. "If you decrease blood flow to the skin, you decrease heat loss from the skin."

Learn the best ways to keep your fingers and toes warm when this happens.

2. You have to urinate

All that vasoconstriction forces fluid to concentrate in your core. This causes volume receptors that talk to your hypothalamus to say, "Hey, maybe you should get rid of some of that fluid—maybe you should pee." It's common, say, on the ski slopes for people to use the bathroom right before they head outdoors and then to feel like they need to go again shortly after being outside.

If you ski, or do any other outdoor winter exercise, follow these safety tips.

3. You shiver.

Of course you shiver when it’s cold—duh. But the reason you do is utterly interesting. "When vasoconstriction isn’t doing enough to warm you, the hypothalamus tells your muscles to start contracting. One of the byproducts of muscle contraction is heat." Garden-variety shivering produces about 100 watts of heat, says Giesbrecht. If you get cold enough to enter into mild hypothermia, you can produce 400 to 600 watts of heat through shivering.

Here's how to recognize—and deal with—hypothermia.

7 things science says predict divorce

0
0

it's complicated

No one can say with 100% certainty that a couple is heading for disaster.

But social scientists have gotten pretty good at predicting who's most likely to wind up there. These couples share certain commonalities — in the way they fight and the way they describe their relationship, but also in their education level and employment status.

Below, Business Insider has rounded up seven factors that predict divorce.

SEE ALSO: 13 facts about divorce every couple should know before getting married

Getting married in your teens or after age 32

The best time to get married is when you feel ready, and when you've found someone you think you can spend a lifetime with. Don't force anything — or put it off — because a study told you to do so.

That said, research does suggest that couples who marry in their teens and couples who marry in their mid-30s or later are at greater risk for divorce than couples in their late 20s and early 30s. The risk is especially high for teenage couples.

That's according to research led by Nicholas Wolfinger, a professor at the University of Utah. After age 32, Wolfinger found, your odds of divorce increase by about 5% every year.

As Wolfinger wrote in a blog post for the conservative-leaning Institute for Family Studies, "For almost everyone, the late twenties seems to be the best time to tie the knot."

Other research, published in 2015 in the journal Economic Inquiry, found that the odds of divorce among heterosexual couples increase with the age gap between spouses.

As Megan Garber reported at The Atlantic:

"A one-year discrepancy in a couple's ages, the study found, makes them 3% more likely to divorce (when compared to their same-aged counterparts); a 5-year difference, however, makes them 18% more likely to split up. And a 10-year difference makes them 39% more likely."

Having a husband who doesn't work full-time

A 2016 Harvard study, published in the American Sociological Review, suggests that it's not a couple's finances that affect their chances of divorce, but rather the division of labor.

When the researcher, Alexandra Killewald, looked at heterosexual marriages that began after 1975, she learned that couples in which the husband didn't have a full-time job had a 3.3% chance of divorcing the following year, compared to 2.5% among couples in which the husband did have a full-time job.

Wives' employment status, however, didn't much affect the couple's chances of divorce.

The researcher concludes that the male breadwinner stereotype is still very much alive, and can affect marital stability.

Not finishing high school

It doesn't seem fair that couples who spend more time in school are less likely to get divorced. But that's what the research suggests.

A post on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website highlights a result from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979), which looked at the marriage and divorce patterns of a group of young baby boomers. The post reads:

"The chance of a marriage ending in divorce was lower for people with more education, with over half of marriages of those who did not complete high school having ended in divorce compared with approximately 30 percent of marriages of college graduates."

It may have to do with the fact that lower educational attainment predicts lower income — which in turn predicts a more stressful life. As psychologist Eli Finkel previously told Business Insider:

"What I think is going on is it's really difficult to have a productive, happy marriage when your life circumstances are so stressful and when your day-to-day life involves, say three or four bus routes in order to get to your job."

The 6 most powerful moments that everyone's still talking about from the Golden Globes

0
0

Golden Globes powerful moments

The 2018 Golden Globes were full of surprises. From the list of winners, which included a few shocks, to the some of the more scathing jokes in host Seth Meyers' opening monologue, there were several moments of total "wait, what!?"

But even more surprising than the wins or laughs were the more stirring, powerful moments that made us think.

This year's Golden Globes were emotionally charged before they even began, particularly because of the actresses on the red carpet taking a stand against sexual assault and harassment by wearing black, as well as the overwhelming and encouraging support for the Time's Up initiative.

On the red carpet and during the show, there were so many moments that really conveyed even more strength, integrity, and empowerment, all of which resonated and inspired beyond the confines of stage or screen. These five moments from the 75th annual Golden Globes were not only powerful, they were history-making.

Oprah Winfrey’s inspiring speech.

Oprah Winfrey has never had a problem breaking barriers before and the 2018 Golden Globes definitely continued that tradition.

Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. Demille Award for her lifetime of achievements in entertainment, including her accomplishments on her talk show as well as her acting roles and the shows on her TV network. She became the first black woman to accept the award, marking a new high in the battle for representation.

Her speech did not disappoint and in fact, it left the audience stunned. Though many won awards, it seems Oprah Winfrey just plain won the whole show.

Not only did she tell the heartbreaking story of Recy Taylor, Winfrey also expressed the importance of everyone's individual stories and how one could use their legacy to make a difference.

"For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up. Their time is up," Winfrey said. "And I just hope — I just hope — that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years, and even now tormented, goes marching on."

Winfrey also said that a “new day is on the horizon,” a message giving hope to so many that the much-needed change not only in Hollywood but in the nation as a whole, is coming.

Natalie Portman’s expert call-out.

Usually, presenters' lines tend to feel more than a little bit scripted, but Natalie Portman changed the game with her very own moment as a presenter in the spotlight.

Ron Howard joined Portman on the Golden Globes stage to present the award for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's choice of the Best Director.

Before she listed the nominations, Portman made a simple point in a way that was both hilarious and biting, leaving even the nominees shocked.

"And here are the all-male nominees," Portman said as the screen cut to the directors.

Portman's statement comes after a large amount of blowback at the HFPA's choices for its all-male directorial nominees. They seemed to have forgotten Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins, and Dee Rees, all of whom were responsible for largely-applauded works over the past year.

Sterling K. Brown’s acceptance speech.

Sterling K. Brown has stolen hearts in the role of Randall Pearson on "This Is Us" and he was recognized at this year's awards for his performance.

Brown won the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a drama series, marking the first win by an African-American man in the award show's history, according to E!.

His acceptance speech spoke to the need for even more roles for actors of color, as well as his gratitude for his own opportunity on "This Is Us."

"The fact that Dan Fogelman crafted someone who is African American on purpose right — like it wasn't just like, 'Maybe we can plug in a black guy or a Latino guy, but this guy was written to be African American and I've benefited a great deal from color-blind casting, but how much sweeter is it to be seen?" Brown said. "To be seen, to be appreciated, to be respected for what I bring to the table as an African American male, as an African American actor."

He continued, "It is when we dismiss someone's humanity that it becomes easy for us to eradicate them, so the fact that this man Randall Pearson is so real and is so beloved by his family, his white family, his black family — I think when people see him in their homes and recognize his humanity then the next time they see someone who looks like him, it becomes that much more difficult to dismiss that individual. That makes me happy."

14 photos that show the complicated relationship between the US presidents and the media

The US president's relationship with the press has long been a complicated one, and it has varied from administration to administration. To name just a few examples, President Lyndon B. Johnson attempted to thwart certain stories from going to press, while President Gerald Ford was friendly with journalists and even invited some to White House state dinners.

The Associated Press has been documenting the lives of presidents since the early 1930s, capturing candid moments of each commander-in-chief since President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

From press briefings to interviews aboard Air Force One, here are 14 AP photos of presidents interacting with the press.

Amazon's decision in 2007 to locate its headquarters in downtown Seattle has transformed the city in its image.

As the global e-commerce giant has grown from 5,000 employees in the city to more than 40,000, a flurry of development has followed.

The sea of parking lots, warehouses, motels, and car rental agencies that made up Seattle's South Lake Union and Denny Triangle has become gleaming skyscrapers, luxury rental towers, tech offices, and restaurants.

Using Google Street View's Time Machine feature, we collected before and after pictures to show just how radically the neighborhoods have been remade in a decade.

The 17 weirdest 'Bachelor' entrances of all time

0
0

alexis waters nick viall

It's always nice to make a first impression when meeting your potential spouse, but some meetings are more memorable than others.

"The Bachelor" franchise is known for having some bizarre first meetings when contestants step out of the limo. Some skip out on the limo and bring their own choice of vehicle and others come bearing unique items. Some wear costumes and others have weird one-liners. While some of these fun ideas leave a good impression, some lead to quick good-byes on the ABC reality franchise.

Here are 17 of the weirdest first introductions on "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette."

Chantal O'Brien left her mark on season 11 of "The Bachelor" when she slapped the leading man.

Brad Womack was looking for love for a second time, but was caught off-guard when O'Brien gave him a slap in the face.

"It's not from me; it's from every woman in America," she said before hitting him.

The slap apparently didn't deter Womack from getting to know her. O'Brien ended up as his runner-up.

Season 16 of "The Bachelor" featured a 72-year-old retiree, but she was just there to introduce her granddaughter, Brittney Schreiner.

Bachelor Ben Flajnik was shocked to see a 72-year-old woman emerge from the limo with crutches. He was relieved to know that Sheryl was only a grandmother there to introduce her granddaughter.

Schreiner ended up quitting the competition during week three.

Luxury brand consultant Kalon McMahon showed off his wealth on "The Bachelorette" season eight by arriving in his own private helicopter.

McMahon's arrogance later caught up with him when he was kicked out of the house for calling bachelorette Emily Maynard's daughter "baggage."

Everything we know about Recy Taylor, the sexual assault survivor who inspired Oprah's iconic Golden Globes speech

0

Oprah Winfrey Recy Taylor

Oprah Winfrey's much-talked-about Golden Globes speech— which may or may not spark a 2020 bid for the White House— mentioned the story of Recy Taylor.

• Taylor was a young African American woman from Alabama who fought for justice after she was abducted, raped, and threatened by a group of white men in 1944.

• The rapists were never prosecuted, but her efforts helped to lay the groundwork for the monumental Montgomery bus boycott.

Oprah Winfrey's rousing speech didn't just prompt a standing ovation at the Golden Globes — it's got people talking about whether or not she'll make a run for the White House in 2020.

The media mogul focused on the importance of the #MeToo movement, heaped praise on the free press, and called on listeners to take steps to fight injustice.

She also took time to share the story of the late Recy Taylor.

Taylor was a young African American woman living in Alabama when she was abducted and raped by a group of white men in 1944. Her quest for justice proved to be a pivotal but often overlooked moment for the American civil rights movement.

"Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday," Winfrey said, during her speech. "She lived, as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up."

Here's a look at the story of the late Recy Taylor:

One of the biggest downsides? The season can be unforgivably harsh on the skin.  Brisk winds and freezing temperatures are pretty much recipe for a dry, patchy disaster.

Thankfully, there are a few key tricks to giving your dehydrated skin some TLC. Here’s the biggest winter skincaredon’ts— and some major winter skincare do’s.

Avoid taking long, hot showers.

There is nothing more enjoyable than hopping in a hot shower when it's freezing out. Unfortunately, you're actually drying out your skin in the process. Dehydrated skin is not only unpleasant to deal with, but can lead to more serious side effects down the road.

"Very dry skin, if not reversed, can progress to skin inflammation and eczema," Dr. Rajani Katta, professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine, explained.

Opt for short, lukewarm showers, and make sure to apply moisturizer after you're done. The lotion will help lock in your skin's natural moisture, even when you're stuck trudging through some seriously harsh winter winds.

Exfoliate — to a point.

Exfoliating has a lot of important skincare benefits. It sloughs away dead skin cells and can help brighten up a dull complexion. If you’re already experiencing dehydrated winter skin, though, you’ll want to go easy on that vigorous scrubbing. Too much exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural moisture, and make a dry face even drier.

Use a moisturizing face wash as part of your primary skin washing routine, and aim to exfoliate once a week during winter, according to Makeup.com.

Face oils won’t help with dryness.

There’s nothing wrong with slathering on some extra face oil during the winter. If your complexion is looking extra irritated and dry, the oils can definitely give you a nice, glowy boost.

But these oils don’t actually do much in the way of moisturizing because your face won’t fully absorb them.  You’ll need an actual moisturizer for that, according to The Cut.

36 photos that show how Kate Middleton's hats have evolved throughout the years

No royal woman's outfit is complete without the perfect accessories — and Kate Middleton has been giving us major hat inspiration ever since she joined the royal family.

Middleton usually chooses to let her hats do the talking, opting for muted colors with intricate designs by milliners such as Jane Taylor. However, the Duchess of Cambridge is known to switch it up every now and then with bold colors and a fresh new designer.

In celebration of January's National Hat Day and Middleton's 36th birthday on January 9, here's a look at some of the Duchess' most stylish hats over the years.

One of Middleton's earliest headpieces was this black and brown feathered fascinator by Vivien Sheriff Millinery she wore in February 2011.

She wore the subtle look a few months before she married Prince William in April 2011.

In June 2011, two months after the royal wedding, Middleton stepped out wearing this beige fascinator with a swirled ribbon detail.

It's a classic example of Middleton's penchant for subtle, refined accessories.

Middleton wore this slightly larger than usual black hat designed by Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. in June 2011.

The hat featured a wide, inverted brim and a circular feather detail in the center.

Samsung’s absurd 146-inch TV is an entire wall — hence its name, 'The Wall'

Samsung

It's official: Your TV isn't as big as Samsung's "The Wall" television.

Unless you own a movie theater, perhaps? But you probably don't.

This hulking, 146-inch TV isn't just huge — it's also sporting a fancy display technology known as "micro LED," which Samsung says is at the heart of "the screen of the future."

So, what's the big deal? Here's what we know.

SEE ALSO: Samsung patented a phone that can read the palm of your hand

At 146-inches, it's absolutely, ridiculously, huge.

Samsung isn't calling this thing "The Wall" for nothing. At 146-inches, it's more than double the size of most home sets. As someone who recently purchased a 55-inch television, I have a hard time fathoming how much larger a 146-inch TV is.

The image above, released by Samsung, doesn't really do justice to the size of this screen. It's literally a whole wall.

More than just super big, Samsung's "The Wall" TV is a showcase for a new type of display tech from the South Korean company, which it calls "modular, MicroLED" technology.

"Modular, MicroLED" sounds like a bunch of nonsense jargon, right? It's pretty much exactly that. Here's a simple breakdown of these new buzzwords:

MicroLED, in the case of this TV, means, according to Samsung: "It is a self-emitting TV with micrometer-scale LEDs — which are much smaller than current LEDs, and serve as their own source of light."

What that means for the average human being is that the TV doesn't need a backlight.

In terms of the TV being "modular," that means anyone buying "The Wall" can customize it.

"The screen can adapt to serve different purposes," says Samsung, "such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces."

Put more simply, "modular" means that you could customize this set to be even larger (or smaller) than 146 inches. For Samsung's purposes though, the version being released this year is the 146-inch variety.

"The Wall" has no price just yet, or a release date. But let's not kid ourselves: This thing is going to cost a ton of cash.

Between the size, the pedigree of the company behind it, and the new technology it's using, "The Wall" is going to cost a lot of money. Like, a lot of money. Think: Tens of thousands of dollars.

But that's just our best guess: Samsung hasn't given out an official price for "The Wall," and there's no launch date/window either. A press event scheduled for March is said to offer more details on the massive TV, so stay tuned!

We asked 10 celebrity chefs to reveal the best meal they ever ate — and some of the answers surprised us

  • INSIDER spoke with 10 celebrity chefs to find out the best meal they ever had.
  • "Chopped" judge Alex Guarnaschelli loved the pesto pasta at La Merenda in Nice, France.
  • Her co-"Chopped" judge Scott Conant went with the chicken and rice platter from halal street carts in New York City.

We asked 10 famous celebrity chefs from the Food Network and beyond about the best meal they ever had. Their answers ranged from three Michelin-starred meals in France to simple street food in New York City.

Previously, we've had celebrity chefs share their secrets for cooking steak and making the perfect pancakes.

Keep scrolling to find out which restaurants and meal experiences floored some of the biggest names in the food industry.

Curtis Stone thought that the chuleton (Spanish steak) from Restaurante Alameda in Rioja, Spain, was "simply perfect."

"I've just returned from Spain for a research trip with my team from Maude,""Top Chef Masters" alum and owner of Maude in Beverly Hills, California, Curtis Stone said. "[...] Along the way, we had so many incredible meals — but the chuleton (steak) from Alameda in Fuenmayor has stuck with me. The meat is from Galicia and the balance of beef and fat was just perfect."

Alex Guarnaschelli said the pesto pasta at La Merenda in Nice, France, was an "ethereal meal" that changed her life.

"La Merenda has stools and communal tables, no phone, no reservations, and doesn’t accept credit cards," Alex Guarnaschelli, judge on "Chopped" and chef/owner of New York City's Butter told INSIDER. "It is truly about hospitality and great flavors [...] It was an ethereal meal that changed my life. Especially the pasta. The pasta being dropped on the hot pesto in front of me made me tear up. It was that good. And so simple."

Marc Murphy favors an Istanbul street food called kokorec: bread-wrapped lamb intestine.

"I was in Istanbul a few years ago and tried their traditional street food called kokorec, which is flame-roasted lamb intestine wrapped in fresh soft bread, drizzled in olive oil and amazing Turkish spices," Marc Murphy, judge on "Chopped" and chef/owner of Landmarc in New York City, said. "The combination is mouthwatering and is worth the trip alone!”

10 stunning photos that were taken at the perfect time

moon olympic symbol

Whether it's years of practice as a professional photographer or dumb luck, fractions of a second can make the difference between an iconic photo and a blurry outtake.

These pictures were timed perfectly with fascinating and often poignant results.

Keep scrolling to see 10 photos that were taken at exactly the right moment.

A statue on the roof of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris looks like it's reaching out to touch the supermoon.

The moon's orbit around the Earth isn't a perfect circle — it's an ellipse, which means its distance from the Earth varies. A supermoon happens once or twice a year when the moon's orbit brings it closest to the Earth.

Photographing a supermoon properly can take years of planning, and on December 14, 2016, Reuters photographer Christian Hartmann angled his shot perfectly to show a statue atop the Notre-Dame in Paris appearing to touch the large, looming orb.

In a photo worthy of a gold medal, the full moon rose through the Olympic Rings hanging beneath Tower Bridge during the London 2012 Olympics.

This photo of the moon creating a sixth ring in the Olympic logo went viral during the 2012 Olympic Games in London, garnering thousands of retweets. Many also joked about the International Olympic Committee's strict policies about protecting the Olympic logo.

"Moon taken to court by IOC for violating Olympic brand ban," Twitter user Jon Holmes wrote.

This photo of Usain Bolt smiling as he raced ahead to win the Men's 100-Meter Semifinals at the 2016 Rio Olympics became one of Reuters' most-liked Instagram photos of the year.

Photographer Kai Pfaffenbach explained how he got the incredible shot.

"When Usain Bolt prepared for his 100m semi-final I decided to play with slow shutter speed for that race," he told Reuters. "I set my camera (shutter speed) to a 50th of a second and was waiting for the moment when he passed my position. At the very right moment he looked to his left with the proud smile and my first thought was: 'hopefully I got this sharp.' Well, I've been a lucky bunny in this case but I still would not have imagined at this moment that this picture would go viral and get worldwide recognition."

You can see more of Reuters' most-liked Instagram photos from 2016 here.
