In reversal, FEMA says it is not 'shutting off' hurricane aid to Puerto Rico — see how devastated the US territory still looks on the ground

The lights are still out for nearly half a million Puerto Ricans.

After Hurricane Maria struck the US territory on September 20, a crippling blackout descended over its 3.4 million residents, cutting communication between loved ones, spoiling food and life-saving medications, and nixing access to banks and clean water.

The death toll, initially estimated at 64, is now thought to be at least 1,000, according to a recent New York Times analysis. Earlier this week, FEMA told NPR is was "officially shutting off" aid to the US territory on January 31, but on Wednesday the agency reversed course and said an end date for support was not yet set.

Nearly four months after the storm, more than 450,000 Puerto Ricans remain without power, and thousands have no clean water.

It's the result of an abused electric grid left to rot — and what's happening in Puerto Rico could happen in many other parts of America. Here's what it looks like on the ground.

DON'T MISS: Why this hurricane season was so disastrous

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. Nearly four months later, more than 450,000 Puerto Ricans are still living in a blackout.

The storm didn't just damage the island's already-fragile power supply. It also shredded flattened buildings, and leveled cars. Ernestina Lebron, a resident of Maunabo, still has no roof.

Life has not gotten back to normal. Hurricane Maria's death toll on the island is now thought to be closer to 1,052, according to a recent New York Times analysis.

Converted bus road trip couple honeymoon USA America Cute Romantic 4.JPG

Mili and Marcos had a unique idea for their honeymoon when they got married in February 2017.

The couple decided to embark on a road trip across North and South America, from California to their home country of Argentina. Three days after their wedding, they bought a converted school bus on Craigslist. One week later, they were already on the road.

Along the way, the two have racked up a huge following on their website and Instagram account, where they document every step of their adventure. Below, take a closer look at their incredible "pan-American" journey.

Born and raised in Argentina, Mili and Marcos met in high school when they were both 14 years old.

The two became close friends for a while before falling in love during their last year of high school.

Now 27, the two adventurers are traveling in a converted school bus from California to Argentina.

Mili and Marcos told INSIDER that their "pan-American" adventure was inspired by one of their previous trips.

In 2015, the couple had the opportunity to work in Australia for seven months. During that time, Mili and Marcos saved money to buy a van and then traveled through the continent for another two months. After that, the two sold the van and flew to Asia where they backpacked through Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka for five months.

"We fell love with this nomadic lifestyle, with the simplicity of living this way, and the daily uncertainty [of] not knowing where to sleep or where to wake up," Mili and Marcos said. The couple also loved "getting to know new places with no schedule and no rush and meeting people from all over the world."

After their trip ended, they decided their next adventure would be a trip across the North and South American continents and started saving up money to make it happen.

13 things you shouldn't do when you're pregnant, according to two doctors

Pregnant Woman

  • Pregnancy can be a nerve-wracking time for a woman.
  • Knowing what you should stay away from is not always clear.
  • Things like hot tubs, roller coasters, and smoking are definitely off-limits.
  • When in doubt, always rely on your physician for trusted medical advice.

Finding out that you're pregnant is exciting, but also nerve-wracking, considering the hundreds of lists out there telling mothers-to-be what not to do.

But before you go and change your entire life around, it's a good idea to make sure the lists you're reading are consistent with doctors' advice.

INSIDER talked to two OB/GYNs about what not to do when you're expecting.

Here's what they had to say.

Don't eat for two.

Don't use your pregnancy as an excuse to ditch a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Yesenia Blancas, an OB/GYN at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center/UT Health said your caloric intake shouldn’t change much during the first trimester.

You can expect to add about 200 extra calories per day during the second trimester and 300-400 calories per day during the third trimester.

Don't clean out the cat's litter box.

Cats can pass a parasitic infection called toxoplasmosis through their stool. This infection can lead to birth defects.

Don't skip that visit to the dentist.

Due to the increase in blood volume and progesterone in the body, pregnant women are susceptible to gingivitis. That's why Blancas recommends women maintain their regular dental cleanings.

RANKED: The 18 best Oscar hosts of all time

oscars hosts

For an actor, no honor is bigger than winning an Oscar. The only thing that can top it is hosting The Academy Awards — something only a select few have accomplished.

Although there have been 90 Oscars ceremonies, there have only been a few dozen hosts because many have hosted multiple times.

We rounded up our favorite hosts — some as a singular host and others as part of a pair — and ranked them in order from worst to best.

18. James Franco and Anne Hathaway (2011)

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, as they were regarded one of the weirdest Oscar-hosting pairings of all time. People were baffled by Franco's snide remarks paired with Hathaway's upbeat nature.

The show featured tons of bits that seemed to not making any sense and their hosting was almost universally panned. The pair seem to snag everyone's worst spot in hosting rankings.

17. Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin (2010)

These two may be favorites when they perform on "Saturday Night Live" together, but their chemistry wasn't the same when hosting together. They seemed nervous and unprepared and reviewers noted the timing seemed off.

Although it was probably good publicity for their movie "It's Complicated," which was coming out soon, their performance as hosts was not award-worthy.

16. Chevy Chase (1988)

When you think of Chevy Chase, you probably don't think of a cruder comedian. Unfortunately, this style of comedy doesn't always translate well onscreen and many were put off by his 1988 solo hosting gig (he'd co-hosted the year prior.)

It may have been the writers strike happening around the broadcast or just a bad joke gone wrong, but he opened the show with "Good evening Hollywood phonies," It did not land well.

This company proves you don’t need to spend more than $60 on a great pair of jeans

Selvedge IMG 3

I've been known to spend a lot of money on clothing or shoes if it's something I really want, but one thing I refuse to pay a lot for is jeans. Don't get me wrong, I love jeans. I wear them during the week in the office, when casually running errands on the weekend, working on my cars, and even dressing up — basically anywhere outside of the gym or a completely formal setting.

Since jeans are such a big part of my wardrobe, I've accumulated dozens many pairs in search for the best one. But because there's so much to consider: comfort, durability, style (including washes), and affordability, it's harder than you might think. Then I tried a $60 pair from Topman.

Topman is a British menswear brand that's been around since 1978, so it knows a thing or two about what men look for in apparel. I'm extremely critical when it comes to jeans, so Topman sent over a few pairs for me to test out. In short, they're some of the best jeans I've ever worn.

The first thing I noticed was their stretchiness, there's enough give that you'll be comfortable and have your full range of motion whether you get a pair in slim, skinny, or spray on (their skinniest fit.) There's no break in time, like I've experience with other jeans, and the button fly is a nice touch, since zippered ones are more prone to break.

But you don't have to sacrifice style for the sake of comfort, Topman recognizes style is subjective, so you can find a simple pair of blue jeans or skin-tight biker jeans if you'd like.

Finally, the value of these jeans is outstanding, cheaper options exist, but you'd be hard pressed to find better denim at this price. Spending the $60 now can actually save you money, since these jeans will last longer than your typical budget pair.

If you're shopping with a $60 budget click here.

Read my specific thoughts on two pairs I tried, below.

Stretch Skinny Jeans

Instead of coming in the typical waist and inseam measurements, Topman's Jeans are sized by the waist followed by short, regular, or long for the legs. I went with a 30R, which translates to 30x32. I assume short and long translate to 30 and 34, respectively.

The first pair I tried was the Powder Blue Stretch Skinny Jeans. When I first saw them, I thought these jeans would be way too tight, but I was wrong.  I'm a pretty slim guy, but I find certain skinny jeans to be uncomfortable because they limit my range of motion.

What I like most about this pair is that they're very comfortable for skinny jeans. Since it's cold in New York City during the winter, I like to wear a layer of thermals under my jeans. I was able to do that, which makes this pair of skinny jeans even more impressive. This is the perfect fit for wearing with low-top sneakers.

Stretch Slim Jeans

Instead of coming in the typical waist and inseam measurements, Topman's Jeans are sized by the waist followed by short, regular, or long for the legs. I went with a 30R, which translates to 30x32. I assume short and long translate to 30 and 34, respectively.

The second pair of jeans I tried was the Grey Wash Stretch Slim Jeans. In my opinion, they have more of a faded black look than grey. Nevertheless, they're a great color that can be worn with almost anything. Because of my style preferences, I prefer the slim fit over skinny. If you're looking for a fit that's a bit more relaxed, the Stretch Slim jeans are ideal.

The history of the 'Madden Curse' can be traced back to the late '90s

Tom Brady

In May it was announced that Tom Brady would be on the cover of EA Sports' "Madden NFL 18," the latest version of the popular video-game franchise.

Much like the popular Sports Illustrated-cover curse, the Madden video game has its own eyebrow-raising history: the "Madden Curse."

Ever since athletes began appearing on the cover of Madden in the late '90s, they seem to almost immediately lose significant amounts of playing time because of injuries, run-ins with the law, or other reasons.

Below we document the long history of the "Madden Curse," with some help from NFL.com and DigitalTrends.com.

Early years of the Madden video-game franchise

In the early years of the Madden franchise, players occasionally appeared on the cover with John Madden, typically in the background. However, more often, Madden appeared on the cover by himself.

Madden 99 — Garrison Hearst

EA Sports tried something new for Madden 99 (released in 1998). While John Madden appeared on covers in North America, Garrison Hearst of the San Francisco 49ers appeared on the cover of the PAL version released in other parts of the world. In 1998, Hearst had his best season as a pro, rushing for 1,570 yards. However, on his first carry of the divisional playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons, he severely broke his ankle and he would miss the next two seasons. This is considered the beginning of the curse.

Madden 2000 — Barry Sanders

Barry Sanders is not always considered part of the curse, but we include him here for you to decide. Shortly after it was announced that he would be on the cover (behind John Madden in the background), he announced he was retiring from the NFL and would never play again.

Brady already has five Super Bowl rings and on Sunday he will go for No. 6. He is also as good as ever at 40 years old, an age when most football players are already retired.

Off the field, Brady's life is pretty fabulous also. He's married to the world's most successful supermodel, has an Aston Martin named for him, and once owned a $20 million house with a moat.

Tony Manfred contributed to this report.

Brady was the fifth-highest-paid player in the NFL last season, making $28.8 million.

BANK OF AMERICA: These 17 stocks could get crushed by higher interest rates

Interest rates are on the rise.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday held its benchmark rate unchanged, as expected. But its statement had a more aggressive view on the path of inflation over the next year, solidifying the market's view that rates are likely headed higher.

Concerns about higher inflation and interest rates were most evident earlier in the week, when stocks had one of their steepest drops since Brexit as the bond market also sold off.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch has identified stocks on the S&P 500 that could be hardest hit by a higher 10-year yield based on how the stocks have historically responded to changes in rates.

The equity strategists led by Savita Subramanian explained in a January 30 note: "Screens are based on a regression of stocks' monthly excess returns vs. monthly changes in the nominal and real 10yr yields, including only those stocks with beta (slope) that is statistically significant at the 5% level and who have at least 10 years of monthly returns. Regression data is based on the time period from 1972-12/31/17 for nominal yields and June 1990-12/31/17 for real yields."

Here are the 18 stocks that top the list.

How much politicians make in every state in the US, from $100 to $97,000

Florida legislature

  • US senators and representatives are paid vastly different salaries across state lines.
  • Career site Zippia estimated how much state politicians earn — a complicated feat because each state calculates salary differently.
  • State politicians in California make the most money, while legislators in New Hampshire only make $100 a year.

Politics doesn't always pay — at least, not on the surface.

The US does not have a uniform method for determining how much legislators earn annually. Career site Zippia analyzed the salaries of state representatives from all 50 states to see who makes the most, and who makes the least.

Politicians in California — where Democrats control both houses of the state legislature — make the most money, earning an average of $97,197 a year. In New Hampshire, state representatives are paid just $100 on average. Both houses of the New Hampshire General Court are controlled by Republicans.

Calculating and comparing how much politicians are paid isn't straightforward. Some states shell out standard annual salaries, while others determine pay based on how many days a politician works. Even the definition of "a day" varies throughout the US when it comes to calculating pay for politicians: In some places it's simply a calendar day, while other states only count when legislators are actually in session — which also differs from state to state.

"Oh, and state senators get paid differently from state representatives — sometimes," Zippia's Chris Kolmar wrote. In those cases, Zippia showcased the smaller salary.

Here's how much politicians earn around the USA:

The 7 most luxurious private jets in the world

Boeing 747 8 greenpoint

  • Private jet makers like Gulfstream, Bombardier, and Embraer are taking their flagship offerings to new levels of luxury, technology, and performance.
  • But some customers have decided to convert commercial airliners from Airbus and Boeing for private use.
  • The cost of these aircraft ranges from tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars.

When it comes to private jets there are some that are a cut above the rest. These days, a select lucky few are taking luxury air travel to new heights with state-of-the-art ultra-long-range executive jets from manufacturers such as Gulfstream, and Bombardier. And then there are those bold enough to convert commercial airliners into opulent flying palaces.

It's all very impressive.

So we here at Business Insider have assembled what we believe to be a collection of the most luxurious private aircraft in the world. Naturally, this list is fluid and subject to change. After all, Elon Musk might surprise us all one day with a "pimped out" SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule mounted atop a Falcon Heavy rocket or if a company like Zunum Aero gives us an electric private jet.

But for now, at least, here are the seven most luxurious private jets in the world according to Business Insider.

  • The Bajau Laut are a Southeast Asian people that have lived for centuries in the seas around Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
  • The Bajau make their living spearfishing and selling to Hong Kong fishing companies.
  • But the Bajau are slowly losing their culture and may no longer be able to make a living as their habitat has been overfished.

UK native James Morgan was studying photography in London when he read about a group of seafaring Southeast Asian nomads who had survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami with almost no casualties.

"They understood the ocean so well that they headed for protection before the tsunami hit," Morgan told Business Insider.

An anthropologist by training, Morgan decided to document the Bajau Laut, who have begun to lose their culture in recent years because of government programs that force them ashore and the difficult reality of fishing for a living in overfished seas.

Morgan found a nomadic people struggling to sustain themselves by continuing to overfish the waters and, ultimately, hurting the very habitat they call home.

In 2014, Morgan shared a selection of his photos of the Bajau Laut with us. You can see the rest at his website.

The Bajau are a nomadic Malay people who have lived at sea for centuries, primarily in a tract of ocean by the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Bajau traditionally live on handmade "lepa-lepa" boats, bringing everything they need to sea, including cooking utensils, kerosene lamps, food, water, and even plants. They come to shore only to trade or fix their boats.

Traditionally hunter-gatherers, the Bajau have provided for themselves primarily by spearfishing. They are highly skilled free divers, swimming to depths up to 100 feet to hunt for grouper, pearls, and sea cucumbers.

Samsung may finally release the Galaxy X in 2018 — here are 7 things to expect from the foldable smartphone concept

$

Samsung foldable For years, it's been rumored that Samsung has been working on a foldable smartphone called the Galaxy X. It remains elusive as ever, but it might just make its market debut in 2018.

Samsung discussed its plans to produce flexible displays amid reporting its end-of-2017 financial progress on Wednesday, which made many tech enthusiasts wonder if Samsung will finally release its foldable Galaxy X.

Here's what we know about the Galaxy X:

SEE ALSO: Two incredible smartphone innovations in the works, and their likelihood of becoming real

More screen real-estate

Many speculate that a foldable smartphone would give users an option to have a much bigger display. Many Samsung patents and prototypes suggest a device that opens and closes inward like a book, or closes down horizontally like a notepad.

Most Galaxy X concepts suggest a foldable phone would have a maximum screen size comparable to a tablet, where the display could be split into two panels that display different things or one big picture.

Samsung has demonstrated this on other products, such as its 48-inch ultra-wide computer monitor (pictured above). In contrast, a foldable display smartphone could also serve to make a device more compact, similar to a clamshell phone.

A built-in screen protector, so to speak

A smartphone that folds inward would essentially be its own screen protector, depending on the material of the outside layer.

It would, however, be a totally different story, and likely more painful for a user, if the device falls face-down while open.

It might be a bulkier device than most modern smartphones

Most smartphone manufacturers have spent years making devices thinner and lighter, but a foldable smartphone is more likely to heavier and bulkier to handle.

A prime example is the ZTE Axon M, which is marketed as the first foldable smartphone. The device is made of two displays attached together by a mechanical hinge, and it's considerably thicker than Samsung's Galaxy S8.

Currently, there is no indication of how a device with an actual foldable display would fare in terms of thickness. In terms of weight, such a device might be closer to a tablet rather than a smartphone.

It then collated that data to create a list of the 100 best business schools in the world for doing an MBA.

The vast majority of the top 100 schools — 83, in fact — are in Europe, the USA or Canada. But a handful are in Asia and Australasia.

We've included the average "weighted salary" of graduates, which determines an average salary for MBA holders three years after finishing. Salaries do not necessarily relate to the quality of the school, although the top school, Stanford, in California, does happen to also have the highest average salary.

Check out the top schools outside of the Western world, below:

17 (78). Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India — $ 139,244

16 (66). Melbourne Business School, Australia — $108,084

15 (63). AGSM at University of New South Wales Business School, Australia — $115,909

  • Dozens of Japanese vehicles are built at plants in the US.
  • The factories are in the southern US and have been in operation in some cases for decades.
  • They employ thousands of Americans.

While touring Asia last year, President Donald Trump made some confusing statements about American and Japanese cars.

Trump argued that more American vehicles should be sold in Japan, where historically almost no American cars have been on the market. But he also seemed to misunderstand that Japanese automakers have been building vehicles in the US for decades, employing thousands of Americans in the process.

In fact, Toyota and Mazda just announced that they'll invest $1.6 billion and construct a new factory in Alabama, with the goal of hiring 4,000 workers.

The Trump fracas made us wonder if folks know just how many Japanese cars are actually made in the US. It's a lot. We added it up:

Pioneer Woman

  • Ree Drummond is the star of "The Pioneer Woman," a show on the Food Network.
  • The popularity of the show has transformed her hometown, Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
  • Drummond and her husband, Ladd, are now working on an eight-room inn in town.

A Food Network show is transforming a small town in Oklahoma.

In 2011, the Food Network aired the first episode of "The Pioneer Woman," starring Ree Drummond. The show, which was based on Drummond's popular cooking blog, quickly turned Drummond into one of the most beloved personalities on the network.

Now, a small town near Drummond's family's ranch is reaping the benefits of the star's success.

Pawhuska, Oklahoma — a small town with just 3,600 residents — attracts up to 15,000 visitors a day thanks to the success of "The Pioneer Woman," Thrillist's Khushbu Shah reported. Tourists flood the town to eat at Drummond's restaurant, shop at her general store, and revel in the "Pioneer Woman" lifestyle.

Shah's piece paints a fascinating picture of an evolving town. And, it got us wondering what it'd be like to visit Pawhuska ourselves.

Here's a peek into how one television show transformed the Oklahoma town.

Pawhuska isn't easy to get to. The closest airport, Tulsa, is more than an hour away.

Prior to the rise of "The Pioneer Woman," the town's biggest claim to fame was being the site of the first Boy Scout troop.

Anna Paquin wins best supporting actress Oscar 1994 AP

The 90th Annual Academy Awards will take place on March 4, and among the honored nominees this year is 22-year-old Timothée Chalamet. INSIDER has already explored every movie that won best picture since 1927, and now we're taking a closer look the historic nominees from the last century.

Keep reading to see the 31 youngest Academy Award nominees of all time.

Timothée Chalamet ("Call Me By Your Name") — 22 years old

Chalamet stars as the 17-year-old Elio in last year's breakout indie film "Call Me By Your Name." Though Chalamet was 22 by the time he was nominated for the role, the rising star was 19 when the movie was filmed. "Call Me By Your Name" is also nominated for best adapted screenplay, best picture, and best original song.

If he takes home the Oscar this year, Chalamet will be the third-youngest person to ever win best actor.

Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn") — 21 years old

"Brooklyn" was nominated for best actress, best adapted screenplay, and best picture at the 88th Academy Awards. The movie didn't win in any of its categories, and Saoirse Ronan lost best actress to Brie Larson for her performance in "Room."

This was Ronan's second Oscar nomination. The now-23-year-old actress is up for her third nomination this year for 2017's "Lady Bird."

Marlee Matlin ("Children of a Lesser God") — 21 years old

"Children of a Lesser God" was nominated for five awards at the 59th Academy Awards, including best picture, best actress, best actor, best supporting actress, and best adapted screenplay. Matlin was the only winner from the film.

Matlin has held the record as youngest best actress winner for 31 years, and she is (to date) the only deaf recipient of an Academy Award — in any category.
