The 12 Trendiest Hotel Bars In The US

0
0

Rose Bar New YorkMany hotels have on-site bars, even if they’re merely situated in the glorified outskirts of the lobby, where guests can grab standard drinks after a day of sight-seeing.

But these days, some of the best hotels across the country are making sure they step up their scene by providing not only comfy rooms and high-end services, but hotspot bars that attract locals as well as guests.

We’ve traveled across the country and have found the 12 trendiest hotel bars in the U.S.

So check ‘em out, and maybe offer your friends a round at one of these hip locales.

Bar Marmont, Chateau Marmont; Los Angeles

With its butterfly-covered ceiling, stuffed peacock in the corner, and plush banquettes, this 1930s Vietnam-inspired bar is one of the best places in Hollywood to share a drink with a starlet in hiding.

Beyond the celebrity factor, the Chateau’s comfortable bar is a wonderful place to enjoy the fantastic food.

The “damn good burger,” we can assure you, lives up to the name.

Rose Bar, Gramercy Park Hotel; New York City

The Rose Bar, a velvet-heavy lounge filled with celebs and beautiful people, is still one of the coolest scenes in town — a testament to the staying power of this super-trendy Ian Schrager-Julian Schnabel project.

When our reporter stopped in for a drink, he ran into Sting.

Original paintings by Andy Warhol, a massive fireplace, and a pool table all add to the ultra-chic vibe.

Alibi, Liberty Hotel; Boston

Alibi is located in the “drunk tank” of the former Charles Street Prison, where those arrested for public intoxication were kept overnight — a unique place to relive a little Boston history (hopefully on better terms).

Thick brick walls with cell doors and windows, original stone floors from the jail, mugshots of celebrities such as Sinatra, Morrison, and Nolte hanging on the walls, and jail-themed cocktails like “Doin’ Thyme” “Jailbait,” and “Ryekers Island,” are unsubtle reminders of the bar’s theme.

But leather couches, dark wood tables, and candle light make the experience much pleasanter today than it was for its former visitors.

Google Chromebook PixelAt Google's I/O developers conference yesterday, the search giant gave away more than 6,000 units of its latest laptop, the Chromebook Pixel.

The computer, which runs Google's own Chrome operating system, costs a whopping $1,500 thanks to its high-resolution touchscreen and beautiful metal design.

Google released the Pixel back in February, but it's giving the device away for free to I/O attendees this week to encourage developers to start building apps for it.

Google's Chrome operating System is pretty much just the Chrome Web browser, but there is a desktop mode that looks similar to Windows PCs or Macs. The Pixel also comes with a free 1TB of cloud storage space via Google's Drive service and can connect to the Internet using Verizon's LTE data connection.

Read our full review of the Chromebook Pixel here, and check out some pretty photos of the laptop below.

Google Chromebook Pixel has a gorgeous high-resolution touchscreen. It's actually sharper than the Retina display on the MacBook Pro.

And the hardware itself is gorgeous.

Chromebook branding. This is Google's first time making its own computer.

David Beckham is retiring from soccer.

During his 20-year playing career, Beckham came to embody the stereotype of the modern celebrity-athlete.

But for all the heat he takes for his tabloid exploits, his on-field dominance and his off-field business savvy have allowed him to become the richest footballer in the world, according to Sky News.

And that vast fortune has brought him all the houses, cars, and fame he could ever want.

At age 38, Beckham is STILL the highest-earning soccer player in the world.

He made $48 million last year, behind only Floyd Mayweather and LeBron James among all athletes.

The New York Times estimated in 2010 that he has made $190 million in endorsements in his career.

16 Wildly Successful People Who Majored In English

0
0

mitt romneyGuess what, contrary to popular belief, you're not entirely screwed out of having a successful career if you get an English degree.

English majors get a bad rap in today's college debate, and it seems they always have.

It's argued that their education doesn't provide the necessary skills required in today's economy.

However, there are always exceptions to the rule, and many English majors go on to become highly successful people in business, government and technology.

We've included 17 people who prove that success is determined by your drive, not background.

Singer Sting was an English major at Northern Counties College of Education.

He might be known for his musical career, but at one time, Sting was a school teacher until he decided to pursue his musical passions full-time.

He has since received additional honorary music degrees from Northumbria University and Berklee College of Music.

Mitt Romney, CEO of Bain Capital, was an English major at Brigham Young University.

Mitt Romney acquired a multimillion-dollar fortune running private equity firm Bain Capital. His success in business was a popular selling point during his 2012 presidential campaign.

But he didn't get that background from an undergraduate degree. He actually graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in English before going on to Harvard to get his MBA and J.D.

Grant Tinker, former CEO of NBC and television producer, studied English at Dartmouth College on the G.I. bill after WWII.

At 18, Tinker had to delay his studies at Dartmouth College to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After three years, Tinker returned to Dartmouth to study English on the G.I. bill. At 23, he took a job as a management trainee at NBC.

In 1962, Tinker married actress Mary Tyler Moore and the two formed the television production company MTM Enterprises. In 1981, he became CEO of NBC and during his five-year employment with the station, NBC's profits soared from $48 million to $400 million.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: An Octagonal Penthouse In New York City Is Back On The Market For $100 Million

$100 million city spire penthouse

One of the most impressive properties in Manhattan  an 8,000-square-foot penthouse condominium in the CitySpire building on West 56th Street  has returned to market for $100 million, The Real Deal reports.

Owner Steven Klar, president of Long Island real estate developer The Klar Organization, first listed the blockbuster with a broker apartment last July.

But he pulled the listing after about six months when it failed to sell. It just reappeared on StreetEasy, and it looks like Klar is acting as his own broker, The Real Deal notes.

The penthouse is octagon-shaped and has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Klar purchased the apartment in 1993 for $4.5 million as "raw space." It now spans three floors, and includes a separate guest apartment one floor below.

The entryway is reminiscent of Versailles.

Famed architect Juan Pablo Molyneux designed the apartment.

The home has an eat-in chef's kitchen with adjacent butler's pantry.

Barbie's Giant Pink And Purple Dream House Is Berlin's 'Most Visible New Tourist Attraction'

0

Barbie Dream HouseA life-sized Barbie dream house recently opened in Berlin, and NBC News is calling it "the German capital’s most visible new tourist attraction."

Visitors can try on Barbie's clothes, play her pink piano and bake virtual cupcakes in her huge kitchen. The entire house is decorated in shocking pink and purple hues.

The exhibit, called "Barbie Dreamhouse Experience," will be open until August 25, and it has already drawn protests from a feminist group that says the dream house objectifies women. One topless woman wrote "Life in plastic is not fantastic" on her chest and set fire to a Barbie on a crucifix.

Despite the protests, the exhibit's organizer told Reuters that the dream house is "basically about playing, being amazed and discovering" and said that "there's lots of hidden things to be found" in the interactive house.

The life-sized dream house covers about 25,000 square feet.

Barbie's giant, pink high heeled shoe functions as a fountain.

Up to 3,000 people per day are expected to visit the Barbie dream house exhibit.

Apple Needs To Steal These Features For iOS 7, Pronto (AAPL)

tim cook shadow

A designer named Federico Bianco has dreamed up some pretty compelling features that we'd love to see in iOS 7, the to-be-released mobile operating system for Apple devices.

He put out this demo of his ideas, and we think Apple would be wise to include a lot of these features when iOS 7 comes out of the oven.

That magic release date, in true Apple fashion, is still unknown, but the rumor mill suggests we'll see it later this year.

We already thought iOS was pretty cool and streamlined, but Bianco's ideas for new features take the cake.

We start on the lock screen. You can immediately make a call, check your alarms, and see a to-do list.

Up above, you have quick access to system settings like Airplane Mode.

This translates really nicely to the iPad as well.

The New York City Coast Guard Works Harder Every Night Than You Do All Week [PHOTOS]

Coast Guard NYC Vessel Inspection The "Deadliest Catch" fishermen have got nothing on New York City's Coast Guard unit, Sector New York.

We embedded with the unit on a routine nighttime stop and search mission to intercept two ships coming into New York harbor. The conditions were tough, and they conduct these missions year round through any kind of weather and in the heat of day or dead of night.

Check out the photos >

They do it 12 miles out in the Atlantic ocean where American waters begin, the wind charges in from the north, and if things go wrong, there's no one to call for help until it's too late.

The boarding team we're with is made up of six Coast Guardsmen ranging from their early 20s to mid-30s. The three crew manning the 47-foot Motor Life Boat (MLB) that carries them are no older. Regardless of age or responsibility, none of them complain and they all work equally hard in the harsh conditions.

This was a difficult assignment for us and we were only taking photographs. Click on the link below to follow these Coast Guardsmen through the night and into morning as they search two ships — the Isola Corallo and the CMG Amber — off the coast of New York.

We had no idea what a long night one small team of Coast Guardsmen were in for until we accepted their invitation to embed with them on a pair of overnight boarding missions.

Located at Sandy Hook, more than an hour from Staten Island, this is where the Coast Guard depart for the long ride out into international waters.

It's all business once we arrive, and after gearing up, weapons are issued and the crew heads for the boat.

10 Countries Getting Slammed By The Gold Market Meltdown (GLD)

china gold ingot

Gold prices have fallen over 12.5% since April 1. They are now below the crucial $1,400 level.

This is bad news for central banks that have been diversifying their foreign reserves to include gold.

Yet central banks continue to be net purchasers of gold.

Global central banks bought 109 tonnes of gold in Q1. And their gold holdings increased to 31,735.4 as of May, according to the latest report from the World Gold Council.

We drew on the report to highlight the countries sitting on the biggest official gold reserves.

Note: CBGA refers to the Central Bank Gold Agreements. The first Agreement (CBGA 1) ran from September 27, 1999 to September 26, 2004. The second (CBGA 2) ran from September 27, 2004 to September 26, 2009. The third (CBGA 3) will run for five years from September 2009.

10. India

Official gold holdings:
557.7 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
9.6%

The government has been trying to deter people from purchasing the precious metal. Gold imports are blamed for the nation's record high current account deficit.

Source: World Gold Council

9. Netherlands

Official gold holdings:
612.5 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
59.2%

Back in 1999, the Netherlands announced under the Central Bank Gold Agreement (CBGA1) that it would sell 300 tonnes of gold during the next five years, but only managed to sell 235 tonnes.

Under CBGA2 (2004/2005 –'08/'09) it said it would sell a total of 165 tonnes (which included the 65 tonnes left over from CBGA1), and it announced no sales under CBGA3 (from 2008/2009 – '13/'14).

8. Japan

Official gold holdings:
765.2 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
3.1%

Japan's gold reserves were at just 6 tonnes in 1950, and its central bank registered its first serious jump in gold holdings in 1959, with purchases increasing by 169 tonnes from the previous year.

In 2011, the Bank of Japan sold gold to pump ¥20 trillion into the economy to calm investors after the tsunami and nuclear disaster.

The Iconic Four Seasons Restaurant Could Face A Massive Rent Hike

0

four seasons New York

After 54 years as one of the most exclusive and luxurious restaurants in NYC, the iconic Four Seasons could be threatened with a huge rent increase, according to Eleazar David Melendez at The Huffington Post.

The midtown Manhattan dining room, which is beloved by business tycoons and high-rollers, is facing an unprecedented rent spike — from $19.74 per square foot to $125 per square foot when the lease expires in late 2016, according to Melendez, citing documents from the building's new mortgage agreement.

To put that in perspective, that would be $3.68 million per year to rent the 29,475-square-foot property, starting in 2016.

The possible rent increase comes after the owners of the Seagram Building — which houses The Four Seasons — took out a $782.8 million mortgage against the property.

The mortgage was financed by bankers at Citigroup and Deutsche Bank, who are now trying to sell the property to investors. One of their major selling points, according to the Huffington Post, is that management plans to charge The Four Seasons at "market levels."

As of yet, The Four Seasons has not heard of any potential rent hike, according to the Huffington Post, and co-owner Alex Von Bidder laughed when he heard how much the bankers were projecting he'd pay in rent after 2016.

Though Von Bidder did not comment on whether the rent spike would put him out of business, the restaurant's interior was designated a historical landmark by the city of New York in 1990.

So even if The Four Seasons does close, it will be difficult to find a replacement tenant for the famous dining room.

15 Reasons Why Wall Streeters Are Crazy About Del Frisco's, And Named It Their Favorite Restaurant

0
0

Del Frisco's, bar

A bit over a month ago we polled Business Insider's Wall Street readers to find out where bankers, traders, and the like really enjoy grabbing a meal.

After letting the survey marinate for a bit, a winner began to emerge — Del Frisco's Restaurant.

To be honest, we were a little shocked. Del Frisco's is a Texas-based a chain, and it's not the most expensive or flashy (Remember: this is Wall Street) restaurant in NYC.

So why, in a town chock-full of the newest this and the most expensive that, was Del Frisco's selected? Business Insider decided to head over to the restaurant to find out why.

The main reason is this — Del Frisco's is a service driven restaurant. Unlike a lot of NYC spots, the chef is not in charge, you are. Anything you want, just ask manager Scott Gould and he'll make sure you walk out happy.

Of course, that means management makes a lot of tweaks to ensure that every diner's experience is completely enjoyable. We've narrowed in on some of the Wall Street specific measures, but we're fairly sure that these are things anyone can appreciate.

Because it's in the lobby of a bank.

15 years ago, Del Frisco's moved into what used to be the lobby of Chemical Bank (until it merged in Chase in 1995).

That's why when you walk in the first thing you'll notice are the high ceilings and the massive windows.

Because General Manager Scott Gould was a bond trader.

Del Frisco's is managed by Scott Gould, a former bond trader. He traded EM debt for a few firms and had landed at Oppenheimer when 9/11 happened. He was on the 36th floor of 1 World Trade and his boss, who had lived through the WTC bombing of '93, told everyone to run to the street.

They reached the ground floor a little before the 2nd plane hit.

A few months later Gould decided to quit Wall Street and go back to the restaurant world. He called Del Frisco's, where he'd taken clients many times before, and asked to start wherever they could fit him in — that was at the bottom, but he worked his way to the top.

Because there are power tables, and you know where they are.

Gould can show you where the power tables are, but if you walk in, you already know.

It all depends on whether or not you want to be seen or if you want to see. Some power tables are the ones that patrons see right-smack-dab as they walk into the restaurant, the other ones are private and make it possible for diners to see what's going on all around them.

Either way, Gould has copious notes on how to accommodate heavy hitters. Gotta stay organized.

The Craziest Fad Diets Of All Time

0
0

marlboro cigarettesSwimsuit season is right around the corner, which means the pressure to get the "perfect" bod is on — however you define it.

Of course, the combo of a healthy diet and exercise is the best way to go, but that knowledge wasn't always common back in the day — which is why we have such a long and storied history of completely bonkers fad diets.

Looking back at these eating regimens through the ages, we were struck by one indelible fact: People have done some really crazy stuff in the name of weight loss.

How crazy? Well, there was a diet consisting completely of cabbage soup (bet those participants smelled quite fragrant), and don't even get us started on the cigarette diet.

So, while we may know better now, let's take a walk down memory lane and sneak a peek at some of the most popular diet crazes from days of yore.

We think it goes without saying that, barring a few notable exceptions, you probably shouldn't try these at home, mmkay?

1087: The Liquid Diet

Historians credit William the Conqueror as the inventor of the first fad diet.

Legend has it that the English king became too heavy to ride his horse, so he went on an all-liquid diet.

His liquid of choice?

Liquor.

The diet didn’t exactly work, and he actually died later that year after falling off the poor, probably exhausted horse.

1820: The Vinegar Diet

“Roses are red, violets are blue. Drink lots of vinegar and you’ll feel ew.”

That could've been prose by English poet Lord Byron. He regularly cleansed his body by drinking lots of vinegar and water.

It’s no wonder he felt lighter after this practice; side effects include vomiting and diarrhea.

These days, dieters use apple cider vinegar as a weight loss tool. It reportedly works if you take a couple of tablespoons of the stuff 30 minutes before a meal.

Devotees say you’ll feel full and will eat less.

We say fine — as long as it's not your entire meal.

1863: The Banting Diet

We all think of Dr. Atkins as the inventor of the low-carb diet, but that title actually belongs to Englishman William Banting.

He lost 50 pounds (we’re talking weight, not British currency here) by cutting bread, butter, milk, and potatoes out of his diet and adding more meat.

He wrote a pamphlet, “Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public,” about the experience.

It became so popular that “banting” became a new term for dieting.

Marine Combat Water Survival Course Would Probably Drown Ryan Lochte

0
0

8576846219_dc0721b02a_b

Scratch that: Lochte — the Olympic swimming gold medal winner — would definitely drown.

Marine Corps Water Survival Instructor Course (MCIWS) is one of the most difficult, grueling water certifications in the military (outside of BUD/S and their SCUBA and underwater demolitions courses).

It's three intense weeks with just more than 50% wash out rate.

“It’s been told, and I fully believe, that [the MCIWS course] ranks in the top five of the most physically demanding courses in the Marine Corps,” said one former director of the course.

And just like BUD/S and Recon pool training, the instructors make a concerted effort to weed out all non-hackers — and this means practically drowning half their students before the training is through.

First of all, everything is done with as much realism as possible — which means being in the water with gear.

Certified medical technicians on the scene also teach immediate actions for water injuries.

So the students will get issued, and are expected to wear, UDTs — Underwater Demolition Trunks.

7 Celebrities Who Love 'Star Trek' More Than You

0

mila kunis

"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens in theaters this weekend and diehard Trekkies won't be the only ones heading out to see the new J.J. Abrams directed film.

A few of Hollywood's biggest names attend "Star Trek" conventions, have autographed memorabilia from Leonard Nimoy, and even speak Klingon.

If you think you're a huge fan, celebrities from Maria Menounos to Mila Kunis may have you beat.

Mila Kunis has been a Trekkie since her teens.

Kunis told GQ in 2011 she has vintage "Star Trek" figures and a signed photo from Leonard Nimoy.

She's even attended a Trek conference.

"I went to the Star Trek Experience in Vegas maybe five years ago. I hung out with a bunch of fake characters inside Quark's bar. [Ed note: Quark was the name of the Ferengi bartender on DS9.] There were all these actors there pretending to be the different characters from the different shows. Yes, I loved it."

Her favorite series? "The Next Generation."

Ben Stiller sprinkles a lot of "Star Trek" references into his movies.

Not only is Stiller's production company, "Red Hour Films," a reference to an episode from the original series, but he has also thrown "Star Trek" references into his films ranging from "Tropic Thunder" to "Zoolander."

He also revealed at the 82nd Academy Awards he owns two pairs of Spock's ears signed by Leonard Nimoy.

Olivia Wilde says she's a Trekkie.

Wilde told i09 she's been a fan since young.

"I grew up as a Trekkie, which is really funny,"said Wilde. "I think 'Star Trek,' they were always great female roles, but there's no reason the captain shouldn't be a woman."

Here's What 14 Fashion Icons Really Think Of Marc Jacobs

0
0

marc jacobs victoria beckhamMarc Jacobs has been called many things: Genius. Pioneer. Original. Exhibitionist. And, it's no wonder — the man is synonymous with style.

His show, season after season, marks the pinnacle of New York Fashion Week and points in the direction of things to come.

Even outside of show season, Marc continues to evolve and delight: In the past few months, he’s acted in his first film, worn the same women’s Prada coat as Anna Wintour (to the same event!), been named creative director of Diet Coke, and designed costumes for a virtual opera.

But, Marc is also just Marc. We spoke to 13 of his muses and longtime collaborators — from Kim Gordon to Guido Palau to tattoo artist Scott Campbell — to tap into what makes the man, the myth, the legend, tick.

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, a Marc Jacobs muse, thinks he's fun.

"Marc has a really playful attitude and kind of screws around with the cliché image of girls and femininity. In a certain way, he doesn't take it all so seriously. He has fun with it. And, he puts on really good shows."

Model Ruby Jean Wilson is the inspiration for the Spring 2013 Marc Jacobs beauty look. She says he's fearless.

"It was Marc who put me on the map, and I will be eternally grateful for that. He is great fun to work with, and [I love] his individualism and lack of fear of taking risks."

François Nars, founder and creative director of NARS, connected with him instantly.

"We connected right away. He's fun, he’s wild, he’s a fantastic designer, and he’s full of ideas. He has a sense of freedom and always follows his instincts when it comes to fashion. He’s also incredibly creative — that’s the best part. [And] he’s always looking for the next thing — which is nice, because I am, too."

Yale's Emotional Intelligence Test Will Determine If You'd Be A Good Leader

0
0

TestAlong with other notable business schools, Yale School of Management is part of a trend that's testing prospective students for their ability to understand the causes of emotions.

The difference in Yale's assessment, however, is that the school has teamed up with researchers at EI Skills Group to create their own test, which is currently being offered on a voluntary basis and won't be a factor in the school's highly selective application process right now, but it's uncertain what Yale will do with the results in the future.

The idea is that leadership requires an ability to read people, accurately understand and manage emotions, communicate effectively, and adapt quickly to other cultures.

To get a sense of what the 141-items on Yale's Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test consist of, we reached out to David Caruso, special assistant to the Dean at Yale College, who's been working with other researchers on the emotional ability assessment for the past 15 years.

"One key is that when you ask people how emotionally intelligent they think they are that their answers often bear little relation to their actual ability," Caruso tells us. "This makes a lot of sense ... someone may think they can read people really well, but if you cannot read signals you don’t get feedback that your ability to read others is faulty."

And scoring the test-takers is another complicated task, because there are no norms, or correct answers in the way that IQ tests may have, Caruso says, which may be hard for most people to understand since we are so used to finding the one right answer on tests.

The following are not actual questions that appear on the MSCEIT, but were provided to us by Caruso and are structured in a similar fashion to Yale's emotional assessment.

Check them out, and let us know in the comments if you think your answers would indicate if you would make a good leader or not.
