The surprising first jobs of 18 US presidents

First jobs are usually a mixed bag; they can be disastrous failures, great learning experiences, or somewhere in between.

• That's the case even for people who go on to become the president of the United States.

• American presidents took on some memorable first roles across history.

The road to the White House isn't always glamorous.

Sure, most US presidents throughout our history have had experience in law, politics, or the military— or some combination thereof.

But many future presidents had rather unconventional first gigs— from plucking chickens to working at a circus to selling comic books at a grocery store.

It's definitely encouraging for anyone who suffered through a weird start to their career.

Here are the surprising first jobs held by Washington, Lincoln, Obama, and 15 other US presidents:

George Washington started working as a surveyor in Shenandoah Valley at age 16

When Washington, the first US president, was 16, Lord Thomas Fairfax gave him his first job surveying Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and West Virginia, according to the official site of Historic Kenmore, his sister's plantation.

Surveyors measure land, airspace, and water, and explain what it looks like and how much there is for legal records.

The next year, at age 17, Washington was appointed the official surveyor of Culpeper County. By the time he was 21, he owned more than 1,500 acres of land, according to American Studies department at UVA.

John Adams was a schoolmaster

After graduating from a class of 24 students, Adams took his first job as as a schoolmaster in Worcester, Massachusetts, according to the University of Groningen's biography of the second US president.

However, the career was not fulfilling for Adams and he was often filled with self doubt, as evidenced by the personal entries in his famous journal, which the Massachusetts Historical Society has posted online. To keep up with his own reading and writing, Adams would sometimes ask the smartest student to lead class.

Thomas Jefferson was a lawyer

Before he became the third president of the US, Jefferson handled 900 matters while specializing in land cases as a lawyer in the General Court in Williamsburg, Virginia, according to Encyclopedia Virginia.

Influenced by his political ideology, Jefferson served clients from all classes. As he wrote in his "Autobiography" in 1821, he wanted to create a "system by which every fibre would be eradicated of ancient or future aristocracy; and a foundation laid for a government truly republican."

A remarkable picture of a single glowing atom just won a photography prize — here are the most eye-catching images from the competition

Building blocks for a lighter future 3rd Innovation

At the most basic level, everything is made of tiny atoms.

As a way to recognize that fundamental fact, it seems appropriate that a stunning image depicting one single positively-charged strontium atom just won a prestigious photography award.

The image, which shows the atom trapped by electric fields, was the overall winner of this year's science photography competition put on by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the UK.

The photo, taken by David Nadlinger from the University of Oxford, actually shows the light particles re-emitted by the trapped atom, as you can see in the photo below. (That light is hundreds of times larger than the atom itself and can be captured in a visible shot using a digital camera, though you can't see anything the size of an atom without a powerful microscope.)

It's not the only stunning shot from the competition, which also includes photos of the fascinating fluid patterns on a bubble of soap, the structures that cover a butterfly's wing, and a robot learning to take a selfie.

Here's a selection of the winning images.

Trump insisted on hanging bright gold drapes in the Oval Office — here are past presidents' offices for comparison

oval office

• The Oval Office is the official office of the president of the United States.

• In modern times, many new presidents have redesigned the room.

• These refurbishments typically reflect their personal tastes, signal their political leanings, and commemorate the figures who they admire.

The Oval Office is more than just an office.

It's a symbol of the authority and power of the US presidency — and a great spot for photo ops.

But, while all presidents from John Adams onward have lived in the White House, the Oval Office is a somewhat more modern convention.

The first Oval Office was the brainchild of President William Taft, who added the room when he expanded the West Wing. According to the White House Museum, the room had a green scheme, with olive walls, forest drapes with eagle valances, and a softer green rug. Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover all used this original Oval Office, which was gutted in a 1929 fire.

The modern Oval Office was born during the tenure of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since then, new presidents have typically redesigned the space, swapping out the drapes, rug, chairs, and desk, switching up the artwork, and adopting new color schemes.

The changes to the Oval Office aren't always simple matter of personal taste. The redesign often allows the president to subtly signal certain political leanings and commemorate the historical figures who they admire.

Oval Office decorations can also be a source of political sniping. Under President Donald Trump's administration, White House officials chose to anonymously bash Barack Obama by alleging that he'd left the room's wallpaper stained and damaged. They said they were engaging in a $3.4 million redesign in order to restore the room's "luster" and "glory," The Guardian reported.

And sometimes, certain decorating choices can even result in a public backlash — like Trump's choice to display a portrait of Andrew Jackson, or Obama's decision to move a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office to the Treaty Room.

With that in mind, here's a look back in time at the Oval Office over the years, from FDR to Trump:

Roosevelt is the father of the modern Oval Office. According to the blog Our White House, he hated the old room because it "lacked windows and privacy." The new space was sunnier and located closer to his staff. However, during WWII, the president may have been required to move his desk away from the window, for security reasons.

FDR kept the old office's green theme alive, selecting green drapes and a blue green rug. He also kept a marble mantel and two sconces, from the old room. The room also featured many armchairs and arched-back chairs, ship models, Herbert Hoover's old desk, prints of the Hudson Valley, a painting of George Washington, and an animal skin rug.

Harry Truman commemorated Roosevelt, who died in office, by featuring a large photograph of him in the Oval Office. The art he displayed was eclectic, and included a portrait of Washington, depictions of Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin that were gifts from Venezuela and Argentina, a plaque of the Missouri State Seal, and plane models.

red gerard

Every four years the Winter Olympics brings together the best athletes from all over the world to slide, skate, and curl their way to Olympic gold.

Heading into Pyeongchang 2018, there were the stalwarts of the Winter Games that Americans already know and are eager to tune in for — Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin's in downhill skiing, Team Shuster in curling, and more Olympic favorites all back in action.

But there's also a great batch of young American athletes this year that will likely become the anchors of Team USA for years to come.

Competing in their first Olympics, these teenagers represent the bright futures of their sports, and are not only stars to watch right now, but also the athletes we'll be looking forward to welcoming back when the Winter Olympics return in 2022.

Chloe Kim

Age: 17

Sport: Snowboarding — halfpipe

One thing to know: Already one of the breakout stars of the 2018 Winter Olympics, Chloe Kim captured the hearts of fans with her amazing skills in the halfpipe and her extremely relatable food tweets. At 17, she's already won her first gold medal, and looks set to win many more in the future.

Red Gerard

Age: 17

Sport: Snowboarding — slopestyle, big air

One thing to know: Red Gerard is another young American who has already secured his first bit of Olympic hardware, winning the men's snowboarding slopestyle event earlier in the week. Like Kim, he's become a favorite thanks to relatable anecdotes involving his family cheering for him while shotgunning beers and a Netflix binge the night before his big run.

He'll have a shot at another medal before the games are over in the big air competition.

Hailey Langland

Age: 17

Sport: Snowboarding - slopestyle, big air

One thing to know: Hailey Langland came in sixth at the women's slopestyle event this year — a contest somewhat marred by the fact that windy conditions made the course almost impossible to run, with some participants arguing the event should have been cancelled.

Still, with her impressive showing despite the conditions, Langland looks set to be a force in women's slopestyle in the future.

winter olympics figure skating uniforms evolution

  • The first Winter Olympics was held in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and athletes dressed for function rather than flash.
  • Hockey players wore less protective gear in the 1936 Olympics than they do now.
  • In the 1950s, figure skating apparel became lighter and more embellished.
  • Speedskaters have also traded in thicker sweaters for sleek bodysuits.

When it comes to style, Olympic athletes have come a long way since the first Winter Games in 1924. Back then, bobsledders competed in thick sweaters and leggings. Figure skaters dressed for function rather than flash. And skiers wore nondescript clothing, not sponsored gear.

In the decades since, athlete's uniforms have evolved to keep up with new safety regulations and advancements in winter sports. Speedskaters now compete in aerodynamic bodysuits. Figure skaters tailor their costumes to their performances. And hockey players must wear helmets and other safety equipment.

Below, see how Team USA's uniforms have changed across multiple Winter Olympic sports, from the first games in Chamonix, France, to the current ones in Pyeongchang, South Korea. We included photos from every Winter Olympics except for the 1928 games in St. Moritz, Switzerland, for which we could not find any available pictures.

SEE ALSO: We're all pronouncing Pyeongchang wrong — here's the right way to say it

1924: The opening ceremony for the first Winter Olympics was held on January 25 in Chamonix, France.

The first Winter Games lasted from January 25 to February 5, 1924.

1924: That year, 258 athletes from 16 countries competed in 16 events.

American speedskater Charles Jewtraw made history when he won the first gold medal of the first Winter Games. Figure skater Beatrix Loughran and the US men's national ice hockey team took home Team USA's first two Olympic silver medals. And ski jumper Anders Haugen took home the US' first Olympic bronze medal.

1932: Those familiar with speedskating uniforms today will notice how different they looked at the first few Winter Games.

Back then, speedskaters kept warm in thick sweaters and leggings and did not wear helmets or goggles.

A day in the life of a United Airlines flight attendant, who woke up before 3 a.m. and ran circles around me for 9 hours

Day in the life of a flight attendant 18

  • Robert "Bingo" Bingochea is a Denver-based flight attendant for United Airlines who commutes to work from his home in Phoenix and back.
  • Bingochea has been a flight attendant with United for seven years and previously worked in the airline industry in other capacities.
  • Though he says every day on the job is different, we joined him on a trip from Denver to Houston and back to capture what a day in the life of a flight attendant might look like.

It's 3 a.m., and I'm jolted awake by the ring of the hotel phone.

The bright red numbers on the clock next to me are the only thing that illuminate my pitch-black hotel room, and I groan as I roll over and steal another five minutes of sleep.

When I checked into the hotel at 10:30 the night before and asked for my wake-up call, the front desk clerk was horrified to hear how little sleep I'd be getting.

"At least I'm getting the 'true' experience," I tell myself. "Flight attendants probably do this all the time."

As it turns out, Robert "Bingo" Bingochea, a 63-year-old who has worked with United Airlines as a flight attendant for seven years, went to bed early that night, and he has already been awake for more than an hour by the time I finally bolt out of bed. He's had his morning coffee, watched some TV news, and checked the weather from his hotel room before I even clicked the lights on in my room.

Like me, Bingochea has also flown in the day before the 5:24 a.m. flight from Denver to Houston.

He's what you call a "commuter" in the airline industry. He's a flight attendant based out of Denver, but he lives in Phoenix with his wife and commutes to Denver and back for each trip he works.

Bingochea got the first flight into Denver the day before our flight, which isn't uncommon for commuters, since flying standby means you aren't guaranteed a seat on the flight you want, and it can sometimes take a full day to get a flight on standby.

I'm shadowing him for the day, and we're to meet at Denver International Airport to begin our journey together.

SEE ALSO: Here's what it's REALLY like to be a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, one of the most competitive jobs out there

DON'T MISS: Flight attendants share the 25 things they wish passengers would stop doing — and one thing you can get away with

SEE ALSO: 11 insider facts most flight attendants know — and you probably don't

As our flight will begin boarding at 4:50 a.m., I arrive at the airport at 4 a.m. I'm scheduled to meet Bingochea at United's In Flight area, but before that, we both need to go through airport security.

Just my luck, getting through TSA security takes me longer than I expected. I must remove my shoes, take all electronics out of my bag and place them, exposed, in the screening bin. And, since I wear some medical devices, I'm treated to a full pat down and tested for bomb residue.

Bingochea, on the other hand — and other flight attendants flying through Denver International — goes through an expedited TSA screening, a process that usually takes less than a minute.

Bingochea has packed enough clothes — rolled, of course — and supplies to last at least four days. "You want to be ready for everything," he tells me. "Anything can happen."

Apart from the essentials like extra underwear and t-shirts, medication, and clothing, he also takes a couple trinkets with him: A pink, rubber frog that was his daughter's when she was younger always goes around the world with him, as well as his Vietnam Veteran cap, which commemorates his time as a medic in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

In general, Bingochea doesn't pack a lunch. He'll bring some snacks with him, but he opts not to eat while he's working — it makes him sluggish — and instead budgets enough money to try the different cuisines of where he's traveling.

As a passenger, you won't ever see United's operations station. With the swipe of my handler's United Airlines ID badge, we take an elevator up to the fourth floor, home of United's conference rooms, HR and IT departments, and Inflight Services.

These are the 20 aircraft carriers in service today

USS Gerald R. Ford

Despite aircraft carriers' immense cost, the Navy believes there is no replacing a well-armed, aircraft equipped, sovereign piece of US territory, powered by dual nuclear reactors.

Former Defense Secretary William Cohen was fond of saying that without "flattops" the US has "less of a voice, less of an influence." Evidently, many of the worlds nations also believe this is true.

The last few years have seen a number of interesting developments for aircraft carriers. Some nations, like India and Spain retired aircraft carriers, while China commissioned its first aircraft carrier, and the UK returned to the rather exclusive carrier owners club.

The US commissioned its newest aircraft carrier in 2017 — the USS Gerald R. Ford — the first in the Ford-class. Business Insider got a chance to tour the Ford last year.

In all, 20 aircraft carriers can carry and launch fixed-wing aircraft are currently in service around the world.

Take a look at them here:

SEE ALSO: We toured the world's largest aircraft carrier, which can house 75 aircraft (but doesn't have urinals)

HMS Queen Elizabeth is the newest aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, and currently the only active one as well

Length:932 ft

Commissioned: 2017

Propulsion System: Two Rolls-Royce Marine gas turbine alternators and four diesel engines

History: Queen Elizabeth is the lead ship of her class and one of the newest aircraft carriers in the world. It is currently Britain's only active aircraft carrier, with the second Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, still under construction.

The ship was laid down in July 2009, completed in July 2014, and commissioned in December 2017. Business Insider was able to take a tour of the ship in December, shortly after its commissioning.

Queen Elizabeth is unique from other carriers in that she has two control towers, one for sea operations, and one for air operations.

The carrier is intended to have up to 40 aircraft, with the F-35 intended to be the main fixed-wing jet for the ship. Other aircraft planned to be included are Chinook helicopters, Apache AH MK1 gunships, AW101 Merlin transport helicopters, and AW159 Wildcat anti-surface warfare helicopters.

More recently, Queen Elizabeth docked for the first time at an overseas port when it visited Gibraltar on February 2018. The carrier should be fully operational by 2020.

USS Gerald R. Ford is the US Navy's newest aircraft carrier

Length:1,106 ft

Commissioned: 2017

Propulsion System: Northrop Grumman nuclear propulsion system and a zonal electrical power distribution system

History: USS Gerald R. Ford was laid down in November 2009, completed in October 2013, and commissioned in July 2017. It is the lead ship of its class, and is planned to be the first of 10 new aircraft carriers.

The ship is still in a testing phase, but is intended to have a planned complement of more than 75 aircraft, mostly F-35Cs. As it is the Navy's newest carrier, new weapons may be added to the ship in the coming years, including lasers.

The ship has a number of new technologies, like the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, which is intended to replace the current steam-powered launch system on current aircraft carriers.

Gerald R. Ford recently tested launching F/A-18F Super Hornets off of its deck last July. It is expected to be fully operational and integrated and into the Navy by 2022.

INS Vikramaditya is the Indian Navy's only aircraft carrier

Length:930 ft

Commissioned: 2013 (Indian Navy), 1987 (Soviet Navy)

Propulsion System: Eight turbo-pressurized boilers, four shafts, four geared steam turbines

History: INS Vikramaditya is currently India's only aircraft carrier, after India retired the INS Viraat in early 2017.

Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier. It was originally built for the Soviet Navy in 1982, and served the Soviet Union under two names; Baku from 1987 to 1991, and Admiral Gorshkov from 1991 to 1996.

India purchased the carrier in 2004 after years of negotiations for $2.35 billion. After extensive modernization and modification efforts, the Vikramaditya entered full service in the Indian Navy in 2013.

It carries a total of 36 aircraft; 26 MiG-29K and 10 Kamov Ka-31 and Kamov Ka-28 helicopters.

The Vikramaditya recently became the first ship in the Indian Navy to have an ATM on board.

Chinese New Year

  • The Chinese Zodiac arranges its 12 signs in four triangles of compatibility.
  • Within these groupings, you'll find the two signs that correspond best with your own.
  • The rat, the dragon, and the monkey match up well, thanks to their open hearts and natural creativity.
  • The ox, the snake, and the rooster share thoughtful decision-making and a reasoned approach to life.

As we approach the beginning of the Chinese New Year on February 16th, many people are wondering what the Chinese zodiac has in store for each respective sign.

The 12 animals of the zodiac use birth years to determine your most notable personality traits. According to KarmaWeather, the Chinese zodiac also splits the signs into four triangles of compatibility. If you're in search of a worthy mate, a glance at the triangles can help you hone in on the best signs for you.

We've broken down the four triangles, giving you a thorough look at the defining qualities of your sign and the other two signs most likely to be your perfect match.

Triangle one: rat, dragon, and monkey

The rat, the dragon, and the monkey are all included in the first triangle (also known as a trine), According to Aligned Signs, these three symbols share a list of similar personality characteristics, and these parallels allow them to forge strong partnerships.

These traits include an attraction to passion, a sharp and clever mind, an aptitude for leadership, the ability to form lasting friendships and beneficial business relationships, and a supportive spirit that leads them to bolster and encourage each other.

Triangle Two: ox, snake, and rooster

The signs of trine two — the ox, the snake, and the rooster — find common ground through a shared level of commitment, powerful endurance (both physical and intellectual), a lack of impulsiveness, and a subtlety to their emotional expression, explains KarmaWeather.

These three signs value a steady hand and an even temper, rendering their interpersonal relationships among the most solid and well-conceived of any in the zodiac.

Triangle three: tiger, horse, and dog

The Third Trine includes three signs whose goals match well in the big-picture sense. Aligned Signs views the tiger, the horse, and the dog as talented communicators with strong senses of honor, the tendency to act impulsively, an idealistic perspective, and the desire for a long-lasting bond with their partners.

The post says — with numerous grammatical errors intact:

"If a theif forces you to take money out of an ATM, do not argue or resist. What you do is punch in your pin # backwards. EX: if its 1234, you'll type 4321. When you do that the money will come out but will be stuck in the slot. The machine will immediately alert the local police without the robbers knowledge & begin taking photos of the suspect. Every ATM has the feature. Stay safe."

ATM post

Snopes and WalletHub have revealed the post to be false but in the age of social media, this urban legend continues to spread. Snopes says that this myth has been passed around on the internet since at least 2006.

A 2010 report from the FTC tracked all technology currently installed or in development in ATMs and found no evidence of emergency calls through dialing PINs.

The report said, "banks reported that none of their ATMs currently have installed, or have ever had installed, an emergency-PIN system of any sort. The ATM manufacturer Diebold confirms that, to its knowledge, no ATMs have or have had an emergency-PIN system."

Even though the hack was thoroughly debunked, I decided to put this questionable social media tip to the test.

I immediately realized one flaw in the strategy. Being able to come up with your PIN backwards — at gunpoint — would be no easy task. I was facing no pressure and still had difficulty reversing my PIN, even on a second attempt.

A major problem would follow for bank members with PINs that are palindromes. These codes are the same in reverse — such as 1221 — and would always be impossible to tell if the user was making a simple transaction or was actually in danger.

DON'T MISS: 'Fake news' is officially the 2017 word of the year

I found the nearest ATM for my bank, Wells Fargo.

I inserted my credit card as I always do, but knowing that this trip to the ATM may end up in an encounter with the NYPD.

I entered my PIN backwards, after several pauses to make sure I was doing it right.

5 million people watched Netflix's 'trainwreck' of a new 'Cloverfield' movie in the first week, which has an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes

The Cloverfield Paradox

  • Netflix released "The Cloverfield Paradox" right after the Super Bowl.
  • Critics called it a "trainwreck," and it has a 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • But people apparently watched it, as Nielsen has estimated five million people watched it in the first week.

People love watching "Cloverfield" movies, even when they are terrible.

According to new estimates by Nielsen, five million people worldwide watched Netflix's newest movie in the series, "The Cloverfield Paradox," in its first week of availability on the service. (Note: Netflix does not release official numbers, and has previously questioned the accuracy of third-party trackers.)

But even if the Nielsen numbers are just a rough gauge: That's still a ton of people for a movie that might have epically flopped in a traditional theatrical release.

Part of the mystique of this film was its release strategy.

Netflix released a trailer for "The Cloverfield Paradox" during the Super Bowl. And then it released the movie on Netflix right after the game. This was shocking given that, as of early January, Paramount was set to release the movie in theaters in April.

The reveal stunt was great, but unfortunately critics hated the movie. Right now, it has a 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The first movie, "Cloverfield" (2008), has a 77% rating, and the second movie, "10 Cloverfield Lane," has an impressive 90%.

But it doesn't seem to have bothered Netflix viewers, who have also watched Netflix's critically panned new Adam Sandler movies in droves (Netflix previously revealed.)

So why is "The Cloverfield Paradox" so bad?

We collected some of the rotten reviews from critics to give you an idea:

"A trainwreck of a sci-fi flick bent on extending a franchise that should have died a peaceful death almost exactly one decade ago."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Perhaps what makes The Cloverfield Paradox so frustrating is that it squanders the gifts it has been given."

Slashfilm

"The true paradox of this movie is that those enjoyably wild twists alone would've made this film a whole lot of fun to watch with a big multiplex audience, even as inconsistent and ultimately illogical it turns out to be."

20 celebrities who married totally normal people

matthew mcconaughey and camila alves

  • Not all celebrities marry other celebrities, some marry completely normal people that they met under completely normal circumstances.
  • Gal Gadot met her Israli hotel-owning husband at a yoga retreat and Alec Baldwin met his wife at a bar.
  • Aaron Paul and his now wife met at Coachella while Natalie Portman met her husband while filming "Black Swan."

Oh, celebrities. When they’re not out there entertaining us, they actually lead full, rich lives.

No, no, it’s true. They work, they play, they travel, and yes, they even date. Sometimes, those dates even lead to long-lasting and beautiful marriage.

Ah, they really are just like us. And sometimes, they even marry people just like us.

While most celebrities end up dating and making a family with other equally famous and interesting people, there are a whole slew of interesting A-graders who met, fell in love with, and married non-famous folk. We know it sounds like something out of a fairy tale or Hallmark movie, but these thing do happen.

Of course, more often than not, these “normal” people also happen to be incredibly attractive.

There’s a cross-selection of normal people who married the top tier of humanity who happen to be, in the words of another A-grade famous person: “Really really really ridiculously good looking.” Who knows, play your cards right, be charming and the next person on this list could be you.

In the spirit of that, we present to you 20 stars whose non-famous spouses are more stunning than any celeb.

Aaron Paul and Lauren Parsekian

Think you’re only going to a music festival to dance? Think again: you’re there to find love.

At least, that’s what happened to Aaron Paul when he met his wife, Kind Campaign co-founder Lauren Parsekian, at Coachella. That same night, he told her he was going to marry her. Of course, the adventure just continued on from there.

“Our first date after Coachella was a trip to Vegas… We also jumped into a cab and said, ‘Take us to the nearest chapel. We’re getting married.’ The Little White Chapel ended up being closed. We probably would have gone through with it,” Paul told Elle. “It would have been a pretty funny story. But I’m happy we got married when we did — a year later.”

Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego

You want to be married to Zoë Saldana? Well, then you better be ready to “ride or die.

The actress has never revealed how she met the Italian artist Marco Perego, but they married only three months after dating. As she told Marie Claire, she doesn’t play around: “I don’t just window shop,’ she says. ‘I don’t have the time or the energy or the attention span for that. I need a pair of jeans, I go and – boom – get them. I met my husband I wasn’t going to try it out and see if it works. No I felt it. I went with the feeling.’

Considering that Perego now has a giant tattoo of Saldana’s face on his arm, we’re pretty sure he went all in too.

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth

It’s never cool to be awkwardly hit on by another person, and if you can save someone that embarrassment, well, that’s all the better.

Reese Witherspoon met Hollywood agent Jim Toth at a party after being cornered into an awkward situation. She told The Daily Mail that she was saved by her white knight:

“This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me. Jim came over and said, ‘Please excuse my friend. He’s just broken up with someone.’ And I remember thinking, his friend is such an a**, what a jerk. And that Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation.”

They pair started dating and were married in 2012.

You wouldn’t know that Toth reps stars instead of acting next to them in front of the camera, he’s always dressed to the nines and impeccably groomed. We didn’t think there could be a prettier pair than Reese and Ryan Phillippe back when they were married, but Reese and Jim give them a good run for their money.

Here's a definitive guide to the state of each business on Wall Street, which is coming off a ghastly year

storm over new york wall street

  • Wall Street investment banks had a rough 2017 as revenues slid to $150.4 billion — the lowest level since 2008.
  • Struggles in trading plagued the banks, with fixed income, currency, and commodities (FICC) businesses especially hard hit.
  • Business from investment banking underwriting and advisory services was the lone bright spot, but the substantial gains weren't enough to compensate for the losses in trading.

Wall Street investment banks had a ghastly year in 2017, with revenues sinking to $150.4 billion — the lowest level since 2008.

That's according to a new report from industry consultant and analytics company Coalition.

The dismal year was led by banks' underperforming trading departments, which were plagued by low volatility. Revenues from fixed income, currency, and commodities (FICC) fell 11% to $68 billion and equities fell 4% to $41.8 billion, according to Coalition.

Business from investment banking underwriting and advisory services — on mergers and acquisitions and other transactions — increased substantially to $40.6 billion, a 10% increase from the previous year but not nearly enough to compensate for the losses in other lines of business.

Even with volatility jolting back to life thus far in 2018, investment banks face a tough road ahead to fattening revenues and reviving their trading operations.

Here's a breakdown of the state of every line of business on Wall Street.

Investment banking revenues fell 4% to $150.4 billion, a $5.7 billion decline from 2016. A terrible year in FICC was the main culprit, with revenue falling $7.9 billion, or 11%.

The year started off with strong momentum, as banks generated $82 billion in the first half — up 4% from the first half of 2016. But the second half was abysmal. Revenues in the back half of 2017 fell 11%, or $8.6 billion, below last year's mark.

FICC businesses saw deep declines as they reckoned with record-low volatility. Revenues now sit $35 billion below 2012 levels — a 33% decline. Commodities fell 42% from 2016 to $2.5 billion, its lowest level since 2006. Securitization was the exception, increasing 15% thanks to the demand for complex financing solutions.

justin theroux jennifer aniston

2018 may have recently started, but some celebrity couples have already broken up. Some pairs were together for a few months before calling it quits, while others were together for more than 10 years.

From movie stars to reality TV stars, keep reading to see which celebrity couples have split so far.

Julie Bowen and Scott Phillips

"Modern Family" actress Julie Bowen was married to Scott Phillips since 2004, but the couple has decided to divorce. In early February, it was announced that Bowen and Phillips were separating. Days later, Bowen filed for divorce from Phillips citing irreconcilable differences and also asking for joint custody of their three children, Oliver, John, and Gustav.

According to reports, the couple separated in 2017.

Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff

According to E!, the actress and singer broke up in December 2017, but this wasn't revealed until early January. Their breakup was reportedly "amicable." In an Instagram live video, Dunham explained why she's still wearing a ring from the Bleachers musician.

"I'm wearing this ring that Jack gave me and I'll always wear it, because love is a really cool, powerful, eternal thing and it doesn't have to be defined the way we in Western culture define it as beginnings and ends," Dunham said.

Elon Musk and Amber Heard

Amber Heard and Elon Musk first split in 2017 and in an interview with Rolling Stone, Musk admitted that he was "really in love."

Musk added: "Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think."

He also said that that the breakup lead to "severe emotional pain," and the couple briefly rekindled their relationship before reportedly breaking up again
