The most exciting city in every state — and the most boring one you can probably skip

Charleston

Debates about "best" and "worst" cities elicit strong feelings. It's a tricky issue because such debates are largely subjective.

So Business Insider attempted to use data to definitively prove which are the most exciting and most boring cities in every state across America.

To do that, we took counts of the number of establishments for 66 different types of businesses — like breweries, art dealers, and museums — that can make a city more "interesting." We sourced data from the Census Bureau's 2015 County Business Patterns program and picked the metro areas with the highest and lowest count of these businesses for our interesting and boring cities.

For example, the New York City metro area has 62 breweries, 762 art dealers, and 305 museums, based on federal data. That ended up being the "most exciting" city in New York. Elmira, the "most boring" city in New York, has two breweries, zero art dealers, and four museums. Of course, this means that bigger cities tended to rank better as "exciting" cities, but that is a trend for most lists of this nature.

The list below breaks out cities by each of the 381 Metropolitan Statistical Areas recognized by the federal government. You will see that some of the metro areas span more than one state (e.g. New York City includes Jersey City and Newark, New Jersey). We have made it clear in the slides below which metro areas span more than one state.

And two states — Rhode Island and Vermont — are not included in the list because they don't have at least two metro areas as defined by the federal government.

Read below to see the most exciting and most boring city in every state in America.

10 surprising health benefits of cold weather

cold weather

  • Winter can be brutal, but research shows you might get some health benefits during the colder months.
  • When it's cold, your body has to work harder to maintain its core body temperature — and as a result, you might burn more calories.
  • Colder temperatures can help reduce both allergies and inflammation.

SEE ALSO: The top 5 cities for having fun and enjoying life

1. Cooler temps boosts your brain

Colder temperatures help people think clearly. Research shows that people perform tasks better when the room temperature is set at a cooler setting than a warmer one. What's more, other research shows that people are less inclined to tackle cognitive problems in the summer, as opposed to winter, because the summer uses more glucose that's needed for mental processes. So, getting outdoors for a brisk walk to a local coffee store in the wintertime could give you your next big idea for a work presentation.

2. It might help you burn calories

When it's cold, your body works harder to maintain your core temp. "Our bodies use a considerable amount of energy to keep us warm, and humidify the air we breathe when we're out in the cold," explains Stacy Tucker, RN, natural health expert, founder of Almeda Labs. Be sure to follow these rules for working out in winter.

3. It increases brown fat

Most fat in human beings appears whitish in color, while brown fat is the mitochondria-packed fat cells that burn energy and produces heat in the body. "It was thought that only babies had brown fat, however, a study found that adults have some brown fat, and people with lower body mass index (BMI) tended to have a higher content of brown fat," Tucker says. Research has shown that when men are exposed to cooler temps, they have an increase in brown fat—and a corresponding boost in metabolism.

When Rihanna hit the scene with her immediate hit "Pon de Replay" back in 2005, she became a fan favorite. 12 years later and after many musical twists and turns, one thing has remained constant: Her fashion sense is always on point.

Rihanna has landed on hundreds of best-dressed list thanks to her Met Gala, Grammy Awards, and MTV VMA looks, each one as stunning as the last. She's proven she can rock an elegant ballgown just as well as a glamorous avant-garde design, and she always makes each look her own.

See her epic style evolution, from start to finish, below.

Rihanna stepped on the map at the Teen People Listening Lounge wearing a crop top and low rise boyfriend jeans back in 2005.

It was very similar to her outfit in the "Pon de Replay" video.

At that year's MTV VMAs, she wore another crop top and fitted white jeans.

The ensemble was topped off with a glitter vest and body jewelry.

At one of her many MTV TRL appearances, RiRi wore a sweet halter dress with stars.

She paired the dress with a pair of light green heels.

President Donald Trump recently reached the milestone of being in office for a full year. It seems just like yesterday that all eyes were on him being sworn in as the 45th president on Inauguration Day.

All eyes were also on Melania Trump to see if she would measure up to some of the iconic looks of first ladies of the past.

This year, in honor of President's Day, we took a look back to see the stylish ensembles that first ladies wore on Inauguration Day.

March 4, 1925: Grace Coolidge was all smiles in a gray dress and top hat to match Calvin Coolidge's during his second inauguration.

These photos reveal why women are abandoning Victoria's Secret for American Eagle's Aerie underwear brand

Victoria's Secret

  • Victoria's Secret customers are complaining on Facebook that its ads, which feature scantily dressed models, are targeted more towards men than women.
  • Meanwhile, rival brand Aerie has doubled down on its efforts to promote female empowerment.
  • We visited the two stores to see how their ad campaigns differ.

Victoria's Secret has an advertising problem, and it's putting off customers.

In January, Business Insider reported that mothers of teenage children who shopped at its teen-centric brand, PINK, were revolting online because of the oversexualized ads in Victoria's Secret's stores.

"It is basically pornography that everyone (children and teens) are subjected to viewing because there is only one area to check out between PINK and Victoria's Secret, which happens to have the most obscene photos behind the registers," shopper Jessie Shealy wrote on Victoria's Secret's Facebook page.

PINK has become one of the most successful parts of Victoria's Secret, reporting stronger sales than other parts of the store in recent years.

But it's not only PINK customers who are being put off by these racy photos. Some Victoria's Secret customers are also complaining that its ads are targeted more at men than women.

Meanwhile, rivals such as American Eagle's underwear brand, Aerie, are doubling down on their efforts to appeal to their female shoppers, ditching photoshopped images and partnering with women activists to promote female empowerment.

We visited Aerie and Victoria's Secret to see just how extreme the differences are:

SEE ALSO: These risqué images in Victoria's Secret stores are infuriating moms of teenagers — and it's threatening the best part of the business

We visited two stores in Manhattan's Soho area. The stores were on the same block and therefore in direction competition with each other.

American Eagle's Aerie lingerie brand is known for its body-positive ad campaigns using "real" women.

The brand famously doesn't Photoshop any of the images in its ads. In 2014, it swapped its airbrushed ads for unretouched photos and launched a body-positive campaign known as #AerieReal.

Motown's 7 most successful music artists, from Stevie Wonder to The Jackson 5

$

berry gordy

The culture-shifting sensation that was Motown music began in January 1959, when Berry Gordy Jr. founded Tamla Records in Detroit, Michigan.

After Gordy incorporated the name "Motown Records" in 1960, the label and its subsidiaries would usher in the careers of a number of legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross, along with decades of soul and R&B classics.

From its first major hit with Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Shop Around" in 1960, Motown utilized a prolific "assembly line" approach to song production that Gordy said he adapted from working on the factory lines of Detroit's automotive industry.

At "Hitsville U.S.A.," the small Detroit home that served as the label's studio throughout the 1960s, musicians and songwriters would circle in and out to collaborate on, and produce, hit records at a rapid pace. The company eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1972, which roughly coincided with artists like Wonder and Gaye breaking from the conventional "Motown sound" to produce innovative and influential concept albums.

After nearly three decades of immense commercial success, the label had financial difficulties toward the end of the 1980s, and an era ended when Gordy sold the label to MCA for $61 million in 1988. But the power of the company's timeless music endures.

In honor of Black History Month, the following is a brief retrospective on Motown's 7 most essential artists and the contributions they've made to music:

SEE ALSO: The 50 best-selling music artists of all time

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

After becoming the first Motown act to break through to the mainstream, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles had a long stretch of hits through the 1960s and '70s.

"Shop Around," one of the group's first singles, became Motown's first platinum-selling record in 1960. The band's subsequent hits included "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" (1962), "The Tracks of My Tears" (1965), and the group's first No. 1 single, "The Tears of a Clown" (1970).

Robinson, whom Berry Gordy has called "the soul of Motown," was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 1987. Controversially, Robinson's band members, the Miracles, were not inducted until 2012.

Stevie Wonder

In 1963, the 12-year-old prodigy "Little" Stevie Wonder (as Berry Gordy dubbed Stevland Morris) broke onto the national scene for Motown with his harmonica-infused No. 1 single, "Finger Tips, Part II."

A multi-instrumentalist genius, blind from infancy, Wonder would release a string of self-produced and commercially successful albums through the latter half of the 1960s. In 1971, he became the first Motown artist to negotiate a contract that allowed for complete artistic control of his music.

Through the '70s, starting with his 14th album "Music of My Mind," Wonder unleashed what critics have called "the greatest creative run" in the history of popular music. This run included five massively success, critically acclaimed LPs and two Billboard No. 1 albums — one of which, 1976's "Songs in the Key of Life," was certified diamond in the US for sales of more than 10 million copies.

Wonder was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

The Supremes

Diana Ross and The Supremes were the most successful group or artist in Motown's history by at least one measure — their 12 Billboard No. 1 singles.

The trio's run of hits started with 1964's "Where Did Our Love Go" and stretched into the early 1970s. Ten of their twelve No. 1 hits, including "Baby Love" and "Stop! In the Name of Love," were written by the prolific Motown songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland.

The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and Diana Ross also went on to have a successful solo career after releasing her debut, self-titled album in 1970.

The best blood pressure monitors you can use at home

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best blood pressure monitor 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • If you have a history of high blood pressure or other heart conditions, having a blood pressure monitor at home allows you to track your readings, evaluate the effectiveness of prescribed medications, and report any changes to your doctor. The one we recommend for home use is the Omron 10 Series  Bluetooth Smart Blood Pressure Monitor.

Blood pressure is a measurement of how hard your heart must work to move blood through your circulatory system. Readings are composed of two numbers, one over the other, measured in mmHg. The top number, systolic pressure, shows how hard your heart works during a contraction. The lower number, diastolic pressure, reflects the pressure in your arteries in between heartbeats.

According to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association’s guidelines, blood pressure is considered normal if it is no higher than 120/80 mmHg. Readings up to 129/80 are considered elevated, up to 139/89 is stage 1 hypertension, and 140/90 or higher is stage 2 hypertension.

Even slightly elevated blood pressure puts strain on your heart, causing it to work harder than it should. Years of uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, torn blood vessels in the eyes, heart failure, or kidney failure.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms in its early stages, giving it the nickname of “the silent killer.” Many people go years without knowing they have the condition. Your blood pressure should be checked at least every two years — more often if you have close family members with hypertension, or you have other health issues that raise your risk, such as smoking or being overweight.

If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, a home monitor will let you check your blood pressure in between doctor visits. We take your health seriously, so we’ve rounded up the best blood pressure monitors for use at home. Please note that at-home tracking is just a supplement to regular visits to your doctor.

Read on in the slides below to learn why the Omron 10 Series Bluetooth Smart Blood Pressure Monitor is our top pick, and why you might prefer the Omron 7 Series Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor, the LotFancy Talking Blood Pressure Monitor, the Nokia BPM+ Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor, or the Ozeri Blood Pressure Monitor.

The best blood pressure monitor overall

Why you'll love it: With all the features you need at a price you can afford, the Omron 10 Series Bluetooth Smart Blood Pressure Monitor makes at-home heart care a breeze.

Omron's state-of-the-art blood pressure monitor combines easy use, accuracy, and technology into one compact device. With the Omron Wellness app, you can wirelessly sync your blood pressure monitor to your smartphone, making it easy to chart and track your readings, email them to your doctor for review, or learn more about heart health and blood pressure issues.

The comfortable cuff wraps around the upper arm for the most accurate reading and fits arms up to 17 inches in circumference. The easy-to-read, large-digit, backlit display indicates if your reading is in the normal, elevated, or high range. The device automatically checks your blood pressure three times with a minute between readings, then averages the results, as recommended by the American Heart Association. It also indicates any abnormal heartbeats occurring during the blood pressure reading.

The Omron 10 Series monitor holds up to 100 readings for two users, but you can store unlimited results on the app. This is Consumer Reports’ number-one rated blood pressure monitor, and an Amazon best-seller with more than 7,100 reviews and a 4.2 star average.

Pros: Easy to use and read, handy app for charting results, cuff fits large arms, two people can share the device and store results separately

Cons: Every blood pressure monitor has a small percentage of unsatisfied users who feel the results are not accurate – usually owners claim the device reads too high – and this one is no exception.

Buy the Omron 10 Series BP786N Bluetooth Smart Blood Pressure Monitor on Amazon for $59.99 (originally $99.99)

The best wrist blood pressure monitor

Why you'll love it: The Omron 7 Series Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor is quick, silent, and accurate, making it simple to check your blood pressure anywhere, anytime.

Blood pressure monitors that fit around your wrist make it simple to track your heart health at home. They are especially suited for users who have weakness or health issues that make it difficult to fasten a cuff around the upper arm.

The Omron 7 Series Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor is slim and light, making it easy to fasten to either wrist. It automatically inflates when your wrist is at the proper heart level for accurate blood pressure readings, and it holds up to 100 readings for you or your doctor to review. An irregular heartbeat detector alerts you if abnormal beats occur during the reading.

This is Consumer Reports’ highest-rated wrist blood pressure monitor and a best-seller on Amazon as well, where it has nearly 11,000 reviews and an average of 4.0 stars. It fits wrists from 5-1/4 to 8-1/2 inches in circumference.

Pros: Very easy to use, heart-level indicator, silent, includes batteries

Cons: Health professionals generally feel that wrist blood pressure monitors are not quite as accurate as those that take readings from the upper arm

Buy the Omron 7 Series Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor on Amazon for $46.49

The best talking blood pressure monitor

Why you'll love it: The LotFancy Talking Blood Pressure Monitor doesn’t just show you your blood pressure reading; it speaks it aloud.

If you — or a family member — have vision problems, struggle to read digital displays, or just prefer a device that tells you your results along with displaying them, the LotFancy Talking Blood Pressure Monitor is the health device for you.

This handy monitor has a four-inch LCD screen, so it’s large enough for easy reading. If you prefer to hear your results, choose from English or Spanish, and set the volume to your preference. The monitor will state your blood pressure and pulse results in a clear voice that’s easy to understand.

A color bar indicates whether or not your blood pressure is in the normal range, and there is also an indicator for abnormal heartbeats during the reading. Two users can store up to 90 readings each. If desired, the machine will automatically average your last three readings.

Choose from two models: one with a cuff for arms nine to 13 inches in circumference, the other for arms 13 to 17 inches in circumference.

Pros: A great choice for anyone with vision impairment or difficulty in reading an LCD display

Cons: Some users complain the cuff squeezes too tightly during inflation, the usual small percentage of owners who feel the device is inaccurate

Buy the LotFancy Talking Blood Pressure Monitor with medium cuff on Amazon for $25.80

Buy the LotFancy Talking Blood Pressure Monitor with large cuff on Amazon for $29.99

Going Out In Style

  • Professional stylists and former wedding planners, the women of Going Out In Style, have now turned to the funeral business.
  • Their services cover all aspects of the event, and they encourage clients to think outside of the box.
  • They work both with consulting clients who are looking to pre-plan their funerals, and the families of the deceased.

The four women of Going Out In Style want you to think differently about death.

That is, what happens after your death — including what you'd like your funeral service to look like, smell like, taste like, and feel like for the guests.

Of course, you won't be there to enjoy it, but GOIS wants to style, organize, and throw you the ultimate after-party anyway. The women consult with clients prior to death, as well as family or friends of the deceased.

Their last client — who held a memorial service at New York City's renowned power-lunch spot, The Grill — was celebrated and remembered with napkins depicting custom illustrations of his two dogs, his favorite sayings printed on coasters, and a cart serving whiskey — his preferred drink. They approached the client's family with a simple request: "Tell us a story about him." From there, they begin their planning.

They stand firmly behind the idea that their funeral-styling services help those you've left behind. "In the time of need, wouldn't it be nice if you knew exactly what that person wanted instead of trying to guess?" co-founder Cassidy Iwersen told Business Insider.

With an attention to detail similar to wedding planning, Naomi DeManana, Colleen Banks, Erin Furey, and Iwersen plan every aspect of the event — and no request is too absurd.

"Specialty gifts we can also provide include a visit to your home to hide secrets and embarrassing items — or deleting your browsing history," said Iwersen.

We followed the ladies of Going Out In Style for a day to get an idea of how they operate — and what they can offer clients.

Our first stop was Manhattan's flower district — where DeManana was picking up a bouquet of red roses as a thank you gift for a former client.

Their services span floral arrangements, location and venue booking, invitations, musical arrangements, the food, organizing readings, how you'd like to be buried or cremated, what you'll be wearing inside your casket, what your casket will be made of, and the parting gifts — anything and everything you, or your family might request on your behalf.

As professional stylists and former wedding planners, the team has years of experience creating and executing large-scale events.

Iwersen noted the difference in their new line of work: "People are grieving, and they really need you to help come in...and tease out these details quickly while they're a little clouded or sad. It feels good to use our skills that way."

When consulting with clients, the questions they ask branch out well beyond the major event musts, down to the nitty gritty details.

No request is too over the top. They have a list of questions they ask, starting with the main event. "Is it a funeral? Memorial? A party or an ocean send off? What's the location? Is it a destination funeral? Time of day? The guest list? Invitation — is there one? Is it printed? An email? Delivered by carrier pigeons?" said Iwersen.

• Business Insider reached out to some experts on how to set yourself up for success when you have an extra day off.

• Their suggestions focused on prioritizing tasks, setting technology guidelines, and spending time with loved ones.

Presidents' Day is here, and that could mean you have an extra day off to add to your normal weekend.

But how should you spend your long weekend?

If you're not sure how to make the most of the next few days, we've got some ideas.

In addition to reflecting on the legacy of the US presidency, here are 17 things successful people can do before and over long weekends:

DON'T MISS: 14 sleeping habits of unsuccessful people

1. They plan ahead

Many successful people plan out their activities for the holiday weekend well in advance so that they are not drawn into the temptation of working, said Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "The Humor Advantage." They make reservations, book tee times, or schedule activities with their kids.

"They're strategic enough to have an action plan for the three-day weekend, but flexible enough to tackle any urgent work issues that may arise," said Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job."

2. They prepare at work

"Most of what they do happens before they leave for a long weekend so that they are psychologically free to relax and enjoy it," Kerr said.

This includes saying proper goodbyes to colleagues, cleaning up their office, finishing any pressing tasks, and creating a clear plan of action for when they return to the office so they can hit the ground running.

3. They unplug

Not only do they set guidelines, but truly successful people actually put their phones and laptops away — at least for part of the weekend.

Don't sit and stare at screens during your time off. Unplug and try to use as little technology as possible. It will help you sleep better and can keep your mind clear.

All eyes have been on Meghan Markle ever since the official announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry— especially the watchful eyes of the fashion police.

Though Markle is proving to be a slightly more modern addition to the royal family than Kate Middleton, the two still have a surprisingly similar fashion sense. No matter what they're wearing, they always manage to look stunning and make each look their own.

Here are 15 times the future sisters-in-law wore very similar outfits.

One of their first moments of matching style came when they both tried the "Zarita" dress by Diane Von Furstenberg.

While they both look lovely in the Furstenberg design, they do differ slightly. Markle went for a navy blue color with a shorter length in February 2012, while Middleton wore a longer black version of the same design in November 2014. The Duchess of Cambridge loved this one so much she brought it back in November 2017.

Middleton and Markle kept it simple yet stunning in these svelte gray dresses.

Middleton wore the classic look during a visit to Canada in July 2011. Markle wore a similar style of dress a year later in September 2012.

They are both known to experiment with a bold pop of color, like the deep red of these above-the-knee dresses.

Middleton wore this Katherine Hooker design in November 2014, while Markle wore a slightly deeper shade of red with a higher neckline in January 2016.

From having a bubble bath to going to bed naked, there are a number of things you can do to get a better night's sleep.

Even your diet can have an impact on how well you sleep.

Here are 23 foods and drinks that he recommends.

Beef

Beef is high in tryptophan, an acid "that is involved in the process of making melatonin naturally," Breus said. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate your sleep.

Beef also contains vitamin B3 and iron, which help alleviate restlessness, according to the sleep doctor.

Tuna

Fish like tuna is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which has been found to be helpful in regulating the sleep cycle.

Salmon

Salmon is also loaded with Omega-3, making it an ideal dish for dinner if you want to get a good night's rest.

  • The home furniture industry is starting to see some changes in how pieces are made, delivered, and assembled.
  • Campaign is an online furniture company that combines convenience, versatility, and quality materials to make products that homeowners love.
  • Its chair ($595), loveseat ($895), and sofa ($1,195) are designed to be customized and are very simple to put together.

Shopping for furniture is almost never an easy process. Everyone wants to own nice, long-lasting furniture that looks good in their home, but many of us end up settling for cheaper, short-term solutions for fear of 1) spending too much money and 2) investing in a piece we're not sure we'll continue to like a few years down the line.

Brad Sewell started direct-to-consumer furniture company Campaign out of his own struggles to solve the "IKEA budget but high-quality mindset" conundrum that plagues so many young renters and homeowners.

The Harvard Business School alum studied mechanical engineering as an undergrad, and boasts an impressive resume that includes design engineering positions at both Honda and Apple. It was this extensive background that informed Sewell's approach to bringing innovation to the long-stagnant furniture industry.

By offering customizable, modular components a more accessible price, Campaign is made for the modern consumer who wants to invest in quality furniture, but also knows that plans change. As you move through life, Campaign furniture can adapt right along with you.

Keep reading to learn more about Campaign's distinct approach to furniture and all of its product offerings.

Campaign currently makes three easy-to-assemble pieces of furniture: a chair, a two-seated loveseat, and a three-seated sofa.

The parts are flat-packed and delivered to your door within a week of ordering. You can put the furniture together in 15 to 20 minutes with one or two people, and no tools are required. Disassembly is just as easy, so moving your furniture from home to home will no longer be the headache it usually is.

You can check out each piece's dimensions here.

There are two leg types and seven muted color options for each piece.

For the legs, choose between a light maple or a darker oak with a mahogany stain. These American hardwood legs are coated with a clear water-based finish.

For the fabric colors, you can go for the Navy, Almond White, and Flint Grey if you want a more neutral and classic look, or the Sprouted Green, Meridian Blue, Harvest Yellow, and Mojave Orange if you like sophisticated, eye-catching desert tones.

Campaign prides itself on using only the highest quality sustainable materials.

The Wyzenbeek Test is a measure of durability in which a piece of heavy canvas is rubbed repeatedly over the fabric, and every back and forth motion is one "double rub." Campaign fabrics have a 15,000 double rub count, which is considered heavy-duty, so you can expect them to last. They're also easy to hand wash and spot clean.

The frame is made of laser-cut, cold-rolled steel and comes with a lifetime warranty. The seat cushions are made with high resiliency, flame-retardant-free foam while the back cushions are made of polyester fibers.

Sewell says it's important to him that the company makes the smallest environmental footprint possible. Thus, all materials used are 100% recyclable and the goal is that nothing will ever have to end up in a landfill.

This year's NBA Draft is considered deep and talented.

Several versatile, athletic big men are making bids as the top picks in the draft, while Oklahoma point guard Trae Young has exploded onto the scene.

And across the Atlantic, playing for Real Madrid, is Luka Doncic, a point-forward who looks like an extra-special prospect.

With both the NBA and college seasons in full swing, here's a look at the top 30 prospects, judged using experts' mock drafts.

1. Luka Doncic, PG

Age: 18

One thing to know: From Givony: "Ayton has elevated himself into the conversation as a top-two pick with his incredible natural physical tools and high skill level."

The deadly flu epidemic sweeping the US is still spreading — here's everything you need to know

child flu influenza

Flu experts agree that the 2017-18 flu season may not be a full-blown pandemic, but it sure is nasty.

The flu is widespread across 48 US states right now. Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say doctors have been seeing as many patients as they did at the height of the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic.

The epidemic this season is not at pandemic levels, but it has been especially tough on baby boomers. CDC officials say that could be in part because they weren't exposed to this year's most aggressive H3N2 strain as children.

It's nearly impossible to predict how this flu season will end, as flu viruses don't follow predictable models from year to year.

Still, there are a few simple things to do to stay healthy and safe. Here's what you need to know.

It's been a season of horror stories about the deadly flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called this the worst season since the 2009 swine flu.

Eighty-four children across the country have died from the flu this year, and experts think the real number could be double the total in official reports.

In California, at least 185 people under the age of 65 have died. As of early January, most of those deaths were unvaccinated adults, the state's Department of Health told Business Insider.

Flu shots are less effective this year than they've been in the past, but the vaccine can still help.

It's true that the flu vaccine is not as effective this year, largely because it doesn't protect as well against the H3N2 strain, which is everywhere. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Thursday said the vaccine is about 36% effective this year, and only 25% effective at combatting H3N2.

It's still a good idea to get vaccinated if you haven't, though, because the shot is more effective at preventing other strains of the virus, such as the influenza B strains. In addition to lowering the likelihood that you'll contract the flu, the vaccine can reduce the intensity of your illness if you do catch it. Flu season can last into May, so if you haven't gotten your dose yet, it's not too late.

A 2017 study found that a flu shot could significantly reduce a child's likelihood of dying from the virus.

Pregnant women are especially encouraged to get flu shots because they're more likely to be hit hard by the virus. And there's some evidence that if a pregnant mom gets the shot, that can protect babies in their first months of life, when they're too young to get the vaccine.

It's been deadly, but this season is not a pandemic.

Flu viruses can shift rapidly, making them harder to vaccinate against and tough to predict from year to year. That's part of the reason drug makers have struggled to come up with a "universal" vaccine for the flu that would protect you for life.

What counts as an "epidemic" changes a little from season to season — and even week to week — but the CDC's latest numbers indicate we've reached epidemic levels, meaning the flu is spreading quickly and leading to more fatal cases than usually expected. In the final week of January, 10% of all deaths across the country were attributed to flu and pneumonia, well above that week's epidemic threshold of 7.3%.

Wall Street banks are coming off a strong year in 2017, and their company boards are rewarding the chief executives with fat pay raises.

Despite a lousy year in trading beset by record-low volatility, each of the big banks — buoyed by strong performance in their investment banking, wealth management, and retail banking operations — posted strong adjusted earnings that beat analyst expectations.

With bonus season now out of the way for the rest of bank employees, the CEOs have now been awarded their pay packages. And given the strong overall performance last year, they're quite generous.

Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat saw his total compensation increase 48% to $23 million, the bank announced in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday. Citi stock increased 25.2% in 2017.

Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein saw his pay bumped 9% to $24 million, the bank announced in a similar filing on Friday. Goldman Sachs stock price increased 6.4% in 2017.

Here's how much the each of the big bank CEOs earned for 2017 — including JPMorgan Chase's Jamie Dimon, Morgan Stanley's James Gorman, and Bank of America's Brian Moynihan, but not including Wells Fargo's Tim Sloan, who just finished his first full year as CEO and whose pay hasn't been reported.

The CEOs are ordered by total awarded compensation, from lowest to highest.

Note: All compensation figures are as reported in filings to the SEC or as confirmed by the bank. They include both current and deferred compensation awards.
