Keeping up with the rules of dating can be a challenge, even in your own country. Depending on where you are in the world, the etiquette can vary a fair bit.

Even if you have worked out all the rules and terms for your home country, you could be lost if you search for love abroad.

Language experts at Babbel provided Business Insider with a list of appropriate ways to act on dates in different countries, covering everything from how to greet each other to who usually pays.

Here are the dating rules you need to know in 11 different countries around the world.

SEE ALSO: 12 of the most unusual pet names people call their partners in countries all over the world

1. France

When you meet up for a date with someone in France, it is common to kiss each other on the cheek twice, starting from the left cheek. There are some regional variations to this, too.

When on the date, it's not a good idea to bring up ex partners. It's also the done thing to split the bill.

2. Spain

In Spain, you say hello with one kiss on each cheek. It's not a great idea to bring up ex partners here either, but other taboo topics of conversation include money, politics, and religion.

Splitting the bill is common, unless the man — in a heterosexual situation — wants to be chivalrous.

3. Italy

In Italy, it's one kiss on each cheek, too. As well as exes, money, and politics, it's good to steer the conversation clear of personal issues, such as your health.

Italians have no rules about the amount of alcohol you drink on the first date. Splitting the bill is also common here.

The US cities with the worst commutes to work

The distance you drive or take public transit to work can vary dramatically based on where you live.

Analyzing location data from commuters in 933 metros with a population of at least 100,000, researchers from StreetLight Data found the places where residents travel the longest distances to work. In total, they looked at the median, round-trip journeys of approximately 20 million commuters in September 2017.

The primary goal was to study the links between three socioeconomic factors — income, education level, and rent prices — and commute length, according to Laura Schewel, CEO of StreetLight Data.

When looking at nationwide averages, there isn't a strong relationship between high-income, high-cost, college-educated neighborhoods and short commutes. But if you zoom into certain cities, there are correlations.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, for example, non-college-degree, low-income residents tend to have longer commutes than their college-educated, higher-income neighbors. According to the study, out of the three socioeconomic factors, having a college degree is most highly correlated with having a short commute.

While the study measured commute length for all types of transit (from biking to walking to driving), it doesn't look athow access to public transport correlates with commute length. However, Schewel does note that places with exceptionally long commutes tend to be in rural areas without access to major public transit systems.

There are a few caveats to the data. The places with the longest commutes are relatively small, and job opportunities might be limited — so residents drive to larger cities nearby. The study also doesn't consider people who lack smartphones or connected vehicles, people who work from home, or those who work in different places every day.

Take a look at the cities with the longest commutes.

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737

  • The Points Guy has released its annual list of the best airlines in the US.
  • TPG's rankings feature America's nine largest mainline carriers including American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, and Hawaiian.
  • The rankings are based on a set of 10 criteria including tickets prices, customer satisfaction, and route network.

On Tuesday, The Points Guy released its rankings of America's nine largest commercial airlines. And for the second year in a row, Alaska Airlines has come out on top.

"It’s been a significant year for airlines and travel in America and we’re thrilled that Alaska Airlines has once again, come out on top,"The Points Guy founder and CEO Brian Kelly said in a statement. "We take pride in the data we’ve assembled from sources across the industry and largely based all criteria on what we believe regular passengers care about most."

The carriers featured in TPG's rankings include American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, and Hawaiian.

In 2017, TPG ranked 10 airlines. However, with the acquisition of Virgin America by Alaska Airlines, the new list will feature only nine carriers.

Each airline is graded on a host of criteria including ticket prices, ancillary fees, route network, on-time arrivals, cabin comfort, customer satisfaction, lost baggage, involuntary bumps, frequent flyer program, and lounges.

Here's a closer look at the nine best airlines in the US:

9. Hawaiian Airlines

Previous rank: 8

Why it's here: Hawaiian finished last on the TPG list. The Honolulu-based airline's premium ticket prices and Hawaii-centric route network fell victim to TPG new metrics which increased focus on airfare and network size.

8. JetBlue

Previous rank: 4

Why it's here: JetBlue suffered the most significant drop in this year's rankings. The New York-based airline struggled with on-time arrivals, baggage and change fees as well as customer satisfaction. JetBlue's position as a boutique carrier hurts it rankings with respect to the size of its route network as well as the lavishness of its frequent flyer program.

7. Spirit Airlines

Previous rank: 10

Why it's here: Spirit jumped three spots in the rankings due to its improvement in areas such as the number of lost baggage while also benefiting from the missteps of its rivals and the merger of Alaska and Virgin America.

Millions of women buy and sell secondhand fashion through a site called ThredUp, which claims to be the world's largest online thrift store.

thredUP has a ton of data about what's inside the closets of American women. So the company collected this data, and, for the first time, ranked the 30 "best dressed" women in the US who sell their clothes on ThredUp.

The women on this list are ranked based on their "Style Scores," which takes into account how fast their clothing sells on ThredUp's website (also known as sell-through rate), the quality of those clothes (also known as acceptance rate), and value of their brands.

All of the women on this list have Style Scores of 80 or higher, whereas the site-wide average is 50. There are also links to each person's closet on this list so you can see what they own — if you buy clothes from any of their closets, all proceeds go to benefit Girls Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young girls and women navigate economic, gender, and social barriers.

Without further ado, here are the 30 best-dressed women in the US, according to ThredUp's data:

McDonald's just made a massive change to its burgers — here's the verdict (MCD)

mcdonalds fresh beef

  • McDonald's announced on Tuesday that it will start making quarter-pounder burgers with fresh — not frozen — beef
  • Business Insider tried the new fresh-beef burger and found it to be an impressive improvement on the old-school Quarter Pounder.
  • The fresh beef burger is juicier and has more depth of flavor, giving McDonald's a distinct leg up on the competition.

McDonald's just took a huge step to boost its reputation.

On Tuesday, the fast-food giant announced plans to start making quarter-pound burgers with fresh — not frozen — beef across the US by early May. Roughly 3,500 locations in the US are already serving fresh-beef Quarter Pounders, which are prepared to order for each customer.

Fresh beef has long been the calling card of McDonald's fast-food rival, Wendy's. It took years of effort for McDonald's find a way to add a fresh-beef burger to the menu without sacrificing on speed and improving upon flavor.

This week, Business Insider had the opportunity to taste test the new fresh-beef burger. Here's how the new Quarter Pounder matches up to its predecessor — and why the fresh beef swap is the best idea McDonald's has had in years.

SEE ALSO: 'We cracked that code': McDonald's is making a massive change to its burgers — and Burger King and Wendy's should be terrified

McDonald's decided to test a Quarter Pounder made with fresh beef as part of what executives call the chain's "journey" to modernize and improve menu quality.

"Those who are seeking a larger burger ... this is what they were looking for," Linda VanGosen, McDonald's vice president of menu innovation, told Business Insider.

"It was hotter, juicier, more flavorful," VanGosen. "This is addressing what they're looking for."

The Quarter Pounder itself doesn't look that different — which makes sense.

Other than the beef, the recipe is exactly the same, right down to the burger preparation. McDonald's beef prep simply requires slapping the patty on the grill and adding a bit of pepper.

One positive of fresh beef: it cooks faster than frozen, which means that the new preparation style isn't going to slow down McDonald's workers.

However, the difference is immediately clear after a single bite.

McDonald's beef has always been one of the chain's weaknesses. It can have a dry, cardboard-esque, almost mulch-y texture that leeches the flavor away from the meat. I'll personally pick a McNugget over a McDonald's burger any day.

However, the fresh-beef Quarter Pounder could change my mind on that — at least some of the time.

21 wildest moments from 'The Bachelor' and 'The Bachelorette'

All's fair in love when you're looking for it on reality TV, which means there are always surprises in store.

Fans of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette," know by now that anything can happen when contestants are vying for one person's heart and they're being taped. From broken hearts to surprising secrets, there is always some drama on the ABC reality dating show.

Part one of the "The Bachelor" season 22 finale aired on Monday and featured one of the most shocking moments in "Bachelor" history: ABC aired an unedited version of Arie Luyendyk Jr. breaking up with his fiancée Rebecca Kufrin.

Here's a look back at 21 of the wildest "Bachelor" moments:

Jesse Palmer picks the wrong woman.

The football player messed up during a rose ceremony when he called out the wrong name. He gave a rose to Katie Gehart when he meant to give it to Karen Lindsay. He pulled host Chris Harrison aside to tell him. Gehart was given the option to stay, which she did.

Wes Hayden has a girlfriend.

Hayden went on Jillian Harris' season of "The Bachelorette" with bad intentions, but nothing was quite as surprising as his limo revelation. After making it to the top four and then being rejected, he bragged about having a girlfriend the entire time as the limo was taking him away.

"I'm going down in flames," he said. "The first guy on 'The Bachelorette' to ever make it to the top four with a girlfriend."

Jason Mesnick changes his mind.

Mesnick became the bachelor for its 13th season, having been a runner-up on "The Bachelorette" season four. He picked Melissa Rycroft, but on the "After the Final Rose" special episode, Mesnick revealed that he changed his mindHe broke up with Rycroft on TV and asked runner-up Molly Malaney if she wanted to give him another try. She said yes, and the couple has now been married since 2010.

The world's billionaires have so much money it's hard to fathom — here's how their spending compares to the rest of us

  • The world's billionaires view money differently than the average person — in more ways than one.
  • The typical billionaire could easily afford to spend $80 million each year, while most Americans earn less than $60,000.
  • We crunched the numbers and found the value of $1 for the average American equates to $1,355 for the typical billionaire.

Billionaires are unfathomably rich in the eyes of the average person.

For the typical billionaire, a massive purchase — think: a brand-new luxury car, a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, or pricey college tuition — is just a drop in the bucket.

The median household income in the US is $59,039 a year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With only about 2,000 billionaires worldwide, it's difficult for the rest of us to understand the power wielded by a 10-figure net worth.

Business Insider crunched the numbers to see how the spending power of the world's billionaires and average people compares on a dollar-to-dollar basis.

The median fortune of a Forbes list billionaire is about $2 billion. A conservative 4% annual withdrawal rate would bring their income to about $80 million a year.

At that rate, the value of $1 to the average person is the same as $1,355 to a billionaire. That means the stomach pinch you feel when you drop $100 on something is how a billionaire feels when they spend $135,500.

Below, check out the real cost of 12 purchases, and the relative "cost" for someone with a $2 billion fortune.

With the 90th Academy Awards now a wrap, we have a new Oscar best picture winner: Guillermo del Toro's fantasy love story "The Shape of Water" took home film's top prize Sunday.

Business Insider ranked all 90 films — from the first winner "Wings" from 1927 to "The Shape of Water"— based on their critic score on reviews-aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. In the case of ties, we broke them based on their audience scores on the site. (And if those were the same, the film with more user ratings came out on top.)

Some of the results may be a surprise ("Argo" is ... pretty high on the list), while others (notorious winner "Crash") probably won't be.

4 reasons why you should make traveling a priority in your 20s

$
0

Tess Plona Travel London

  • Life in your twenties is constantly changing.
  • Nothing is tying me down.
  • It's easier than ever to travel on a budget.
  • The memories are priceless.

Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of traveling across the country and beyond.

Although these opportunities may not have arrived at the perfect time, or for the perfect price, I have made it a priority to seize every travel opportunity that has come my way.

Your twenties may be ever-changing and hectic, but that is exactly why it's the perfect time for personal travel.

Here are some reasons why I'm choosing this time in my life to travel — and why you should too.

You life is likely already in a constant state of flux.

Your twenties are a time of constant change. Whether you are job hunting, moving, searching for love, or any combination of major life changes, it feels like nothing is ever certain. So why not take advantage of these changes while you can? Travel is a great way to seize control of your time.

Go see the world before your schedule becomes too rigid and you can't escape the monotony.

Nothing is tying you down.

If you're in your twenties, chances are you don't have a mortgage or kids — you may not even have a dog yet. Although this may be the ultimate goal for some, being free of these obligations means you are in the perfect position to travel.

You can pack up and leave without worrying about hiring anyone to watch your kids/dog/house plants. In your twenties, life is already full of new experiences, so why not make some of those experiences adventurous?

It's easier than ever to travel on a budget.

With amazing new sites like Airbnb, Couchsurfing, Lyft, and Uber, hospitality and transportation are easier (and cheaper) than ever before. If Airbnb or Couchsurfing freaks you out, most major cities have hostels as well. They may not have five-star luxury suites, but it's usually a cheap room right in the heart of the city.

Bargain airlines such as WOW and Allegiant also cut major costs of airline travel. If you don't feel like planning a trip on your own, programs like EF College Break also plan remarkable trips for affordable prices. They will even set you up with a monthly payment plan. There has simply never been a better time for budget travel.

The best pregnancy pillows you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best pregnancy pillow 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Pregnancy is a beautiful, magical time in a woman's life. But it sure isn't fun trying to get some rest when you have a veritable bowling ball where your tummy used to be. A good pregnancy pillow can help support a mother's growing belly and take the strain off her back and joints. The Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow is our top choice because it's supportive, soft, and affordably priced.

When my wife was pregnant with our first child, getting a good night's rest became almost impossible for her by the middle of the second trimester. At first, it was heartburn that forced her to use large pillows that perched her up almost in a sitting position.

By the time the heartburn subsided, her belly had grown to such proportions that her days of stomach sleeping were done until after the birth. She had to adapt to side sleeping, a process which had us at first trying all manner of arranging the pillows we already head in the house, and which ultimately led to the purchase of several pregnancy pillows of varied size and design.

Long, large maternity pillows allow a woman to take some of the pressure off her body by supporting that growing belly, providing relief to both her back as well as her core and her abdomen. These pillows also allow for better alignment of the knees and hips, which reduces pressure on the spine and upper body. In other words, they help her feel almost normal and let the expectant mom get comfortable enough to actually sleep for a few hours now and then.

Now that we're well into our second pregnancy, the big pillows are back. This time, my wife was well prepared and set up what we call her pillow fort weeks before she even needed it, thus adapting more easily to sleeping on her side while flanked front and back by big tubes of supportive fluff before a huge baby belly forced a change in position.

Does she or any other very pregnant woman get a perfect night's sleep each and every night of the week? Oh hell no. But I can only imagine how much less rest she would get without the assist from a good pregnancy pillow.

And for the record, these pillows are also priceless for post-partum respite as a woman's body recovers, and they even work for nursing. It's never too late in a pregnancy to get a great maternity pillow, in other words!

Read on in the slides below to learn why the Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow is our top pick and why you might also like the Yorkshire Home Pregnancy Support Pillow, the Leachco Back n Belly Chic Contoured Body Pillow, the Cozy Bump Maternity Pillow, and the Hiccapop Pregnancy Pillow Wedge.

The best pregnancy pillow overall

Why you'll love it: The Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow manages to be both soft and supportive thanks to a generous volume of high-density polyethylene filling.

The Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow can serve a mother well from the early months of the pregnancy through the entire infancy of their babies. It's flexible enough to loop around a mother's back while she sits up to nurse yet supportive enough to keep a belly propped up even in the ninth month of the pregnancy. It can be used on the couch, in bed, or anywhere else a woman needs some support.

While many pregnancy pillows give their support through firmness of material, this one does so thanks to a generous amount of soft polyethylene fill. That means it's also a genuinely comfortable pillow for the head and neck, making it suitable as the only pillow a pregnant woman uses while resting. It was also a slight improvement on the pillow fort approach we initially relied on for my wife.

The cover of the Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow is made from non-allergenic cotton and is machine washable, so it's easy to keep the pillow fresh and clean even if you use it away from home. Also, it's well priced, and any money you can save when you're adding a new family member is welcome indeed.

With more than 1,300 reviews posted at the time of this writing, the Queen Rose Pregnancy and Maternity Pillow scores a commendable 4.4-star average rating. One expectant mother was impressed that held "its shape perfectly even after months of daily use," while another raved that it was "nothing but a blessing."

A writer with MaternityAtHome called the Queen Rose pillow "fluffy and soft" and a "great price," while a Cozzy.org review called it ideal for supporting "those joints that cause the most pain."

Pros: Soft and supportive, washable cotton cover, good price point

Cons: Requires occasional re-fluffing and reshaping to work properly

The best low-cost pregnancy pillow

Why you'll love it: At 60-inches long and 38-inches wide, the Yorkshire Home Pregnancy Support Pillow is large enough to accommodate even a taller woman all the way through a pregnancy.

The Yorkshire Home Pregnancy Support Pillow is a half-foot longer and more than a half-foot wider than many popular pregnancy pillows. Its extra large size allows even taller women with wider frames to comfortably balance their bellies and align their knees and hips, thus taking the strain off the lower back, spine, and shoulders during sleep.

The drawback to that generous size is that the pillow takes up much more than half the width of a standard queen-sized bed, as queen mattresses are usually 60-inches wide. Thus you'll need a very patient partner if you share a queen-sized bed. If you have a king-sized mattress, it will still take up about half of the bed because king mattresses are usually 76-inches wide.

The large size and 8.25-pound weight of this polyester filled, cotton-covered pillow also make it impractical to bring with you during travels, but later on in a pregnancy, most women are avoiding travel if at all possible anyway, so that's no great issue, and certainly not equal to the value of a good night of sleep at home. Also, let's not lose sight of the biggest selling point of this maternity pillow, which is the fact that it sells for less than $50.

One expectant mother who used the Yorkshire Home Pregnancy Support Pillow said it made a "huge difference" in her comfort level after she started using it during the 30th week of pregnancy. Another customer called it "comfortable" and said it provides "plenty of support."

Do also note, however, that some women reported the pillow as being too thin to give adequate belly support during late term pregnancy, though it can be fluffed fuller with a bit of effort.

Pros: Low price point, good choice for taller or larger women, 300-thread count cover

Cons: Too large for some beds, flattens out with use

Buy the Yorkshire Home Pregnancy Support Pillow from Target for $50

The best strain-reducing pregnancy pillow

Why you'll love it: The Leachco Back n Belly Chic Contoured Body Pillow helps you properly align and support your ankles, knees, hips, spine, and pregnant belly.

While the Leachco Back n Belly Chic Contoured Body Pillow is primarily marketed as a maternity pillow, in fact, many of the people who use are not only not pregnant women, but are in fact not even women at all. This large, generously stuffed pillow can help reduce the aches and pains associated with scoliosis, sciatica, chronic back pain, and more. It can also simply prop up a side sleeper who is looking for more comfort, no defined medical condition necessary.

As a maternity pillow, the Leachco Back n Belly Chic Contoured Pillow is a favorite of many expectant mothers thanks to its adaptability. The open ends of the pillow can be set farther apart when a shallower support is needed and can be layered over one another to create thicker, more supportive padding as the pregnancy progresses.

The soft fill allows a belly to settle in comfortably, while the blended cotton and polyester cover helps to wick away moisture and moderate body heat during rest.

After birth, this pillow can help a mother relax or sleep in comfort as her body recovers, easily shifting into varied positions as the healing progresses.

One mother appreciated how this pillow had "enough stuffing to actually support [her] belly," while another gushed that the Leachco Back n Belly Chic Contoured Pillow "has absolutely changed [her] comfort level at night."

A product tester from MyNaturalBabyBirth noted that Leachco pillows don't contain "chemicals in the fabric," while a video review from Andrea Wright said it offered "full body support."

Pros: Generous volume of filling, adjustable positioning, poly-cotton blend cover

Cons: Rather expensive option

  • Certain factors make it more likely — though not certain — that two people will fall in love.
  • Some factors are biological, like the way you smell.
  • Other factors are behavioral, like your body language.

Love is mysterious, but it's probably not destiny.

According to the research, your hormones, interests, and upbringing all help determine who you fall for — and who falls for you.

Since your partner plays a significant role in your long-term health, happiness, and even your career prospects, we've scoured the studies and collected some of the psychological reasons two people click.

If you're really, really alike

Decades of studies have shown that the cliché that "opposites attract" is totally off.

"Partners who are similar in broad dispositions, like personality, are more likely to feel the same way in their day-to-day lives,"said Gian Gonzaga, lead author of a study of couples who met on eHarmony. "This may make it easier for partners to understand each other."

If you look like their opposite-sex parent

University of St. Andrews psychologist David Perrett and his colleagues found that some people are attracted to folks with the same hair and eye color of their opposite-sex parents, as well as the age range they saw at birth.

"We found that women born to 'old' parents (over 30) were less impressed by youth, and more attracted to age cues in male faces than women with 'young' parents (under 30),"the authors wrote. "For men, preferences for female faces were influenced by their mother's age and not their father's age, but only for long-term relationships."

If you smell right

A University of Southern California study of women who were ovulating suggested that some prefer the smell of T-shirts worn by men with high levels of testosterone.

These are the condoms you should actually be using, according to experts

When it comes to protection, it can be tough to know where to start. Although many men may be tempted to go straight for those labeled "Magnum," that confidence boost may come at their and their partner's risk.

According to Dr. Evan Goldstein, founder and CEO of Bespoke Surgical, finding the right condom for you depends on both you and your partner's preferences.

"When it comes to different types of condoms, it's not so much a vaginal vs. anal thing as it's truly more an individualized experience — what works for some may not work for others," he told INSIDER. "There is such a vast array of choices and as crazy as it may sound, the best thing to do is get busy and try them all."

Of course, knowing where to start is the hard part and we decided that we'd do that for you. So, take a look at a few options that would best suit the needs of his, hers, and yours for your next intimate experience.

Female condoms are seldom discussed, but if you're interested, the only FDA approved one is what you should choose.

Condoms may typically be seen as a contraceptive that men wear, but if you weren't aware, female condoms are still alive and well. According to Dr. Renee, professional health educator, medical correspondent and founder of Ask Dr. Renee, if you choose to use one, you should be using the FDA approved, latex free, FC2.

"FC2 is inserted inside of the woman with the help of the inner ring and then the out ring remains on the outside," she told INSIDER. "The nitrile material warms to your body temperature and is thinner than latex. Most men like this condom more than male condoms because it is one size fits all and is not constricting to their penis."

Although they are only offered online, if you have health insurance, you can receive the condoms for free. Download theHey Doctor App and use the promo code "FC2" to have the condoms sent to your local pharmacy (two boxes of 12 per month).

If you want sex to feel as close as possible to going without a condom, finding a thin brand should be your aim.

According to Dr. Goldstein, many people like to get as close as they can to the feeling of going without a condom during sex.

"People love the extra thin types because it's as close as possible to going without a condom," he said. "A lot of what makes a product popular is really good branding and packaging, but there are a few brands that really stand out to us: Naked Condoms, L. Ultra Thin Condoms, Trojan BareSkin, and Lelo Hex. But, it just winds up being a personal preference, so try them all and then stick with what works for you and your partner."

Although lambskin condoms are thin and can prevent pregnancy, Dr. Goldstein noted that they consist of pores, which do not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and should totally be avoided — especially if you're engaging in anal sex.

Like to explore in the bedroom? The Trojan Nirvana pack is what you need.

If you and your partner like to change up the sensation during sex, you'll find pleasure (no pun intended) in using the Trojan Nirvana pack.

Offering four variants, the 10-pack condom will offer a new experience with each wrapper opened. The Real option delivers smooth pleasure with silky lubricant; the Bold offers stimulating textures for an unpredictable experience with deep ribs for enhanced pleasure; the Amplified brings forth warming and tingling sensations for both partners; and the Breathless is perfect for those who want a long-lasting lubrication for uninterrupted pleasure.

Trump's deadline for the 'Dreamers' just passed without a fix from Congress — here's everything you need to know about the program hanging in limbo

daca dreamer protest

  • President Donald Trump's March 5 deadline for the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program passed on Monday.
  • The deadline's passage was complicated by federal judges who ordered the Trump administration to temporarily reinstate parts of the program.
  • The confusion has left hundreds of thousands of young immigrants known as "Dreamers" in limbo, as they struggle to renew their protections before a higher court potentially strikes down the program once and for all.

President Donald Trump's attempt to end a program protecting hundreds of thousands of young unauthorized immigrants hit an anticlimactic hurdle on Monday, as his March 5 termination deadline came and went without a permanent fix from Congress.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is currently hanging in limbo, as two federal judges have ordered the Trump administration to partially reinstate the program as it undergoes a lengthy court battle.

Legislative action from Congress appears unlikely anytime soon — previous efforts failed spectacularly in February after senators shot down four different proposals to resolve the fate of the young immigrants known as "Dreamers" in exchange for other immigration reforms.

Here's what you need to know about the program:

SEE ALSO: SENATE IMMIGRATION DISASTER: All 4 plans fail spectacularly as Trump goes to war with his own party

DON'T MISS: Tactical units spent weeks trying to breach and climb Trump's border wall prototypes — and they're nearly impossible to scale

What is DACA?

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program shields from deportation roughly 690,000 young unauthorized immigrants by providing two-year, renewable permits.

The Obama administration implemented DACA in 2012, after several attempts to legislate a permanent solution for Dreamers failed in Congress.

DACA does not grant immigrants a legal status in the US. It lets them work legally and protects them from deportation so long as they aren't convicted of major crimes.

Applicants to the program were only accepted if they were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012. They also had to have moved to the US before they turned 16 years old, and lived in the US continuously since 2007.

They were also required to have graduated high school or obtained a GED, or completed prior military service, and to not have any prior felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

The Trump administration announced September 5 it would wind down the program, calling it an act of executive overreach by the Obama administration and declaring it unconstitutional.

What's going on with the courts?

The Trump administration gave Congress six months to enact a legislative solution, announcing last September that the program would be terminated on March 5, 2018.

The administration allowed those DACA recipients with near-term expiry dates to renew their permits one last time, so long as they applied by October 5, 2017.

For a number of reasons, including mail delays, roughly 22,000 DACA recipients who were eligible to renew failed to do so on time, and advocates estimate that 122 immigrants per day have lost their DACA protections since September 5.

DACA's phase-out was further complicated in recent months by rulings from two federal judges in California and New York who both ordered the Trump administration to resume processing DACA renewal applications.

The Trump administration quickly tried to appeal the rulings to the Supreme Court and a federal appeals court, but SCOTUS shot down the Trump administration's request.

The case will go through the federal appeals process first, and since the Trump administration didn't ask the higher courts to block the California judge's initial ruling, it will continue processing DACA renewals for the foreseeable future.

What will happen to the Dreamers?

Immigration lawyers and advocates argue that the uncertainty over DACA renewals only add to the urgency.

Renewals can take months for the government to process, and that leaves both DACA recipients and their employers in limbo if their renewals aren't processed quickly enough before their work authorization expires.

"It is going to be so detrimental to them, because they just don't know. It's hard for employers to plan," Theda Fisher, a partner at the Withers Bergman law firm, told Business Insider.

"[DACA recipients] also all live in a world of uncertainty. So if they have a car loan or a mortgage or a family here, they're not sure if they're going to be able to pay their bills come later this year when their work authorization expires."

For now, they're in limbo.

With a simple construction and pressure-mounted design, the Evenflow Position and Lock Tall Wood Gate is an affordable option that gets the job done. This pet gate has a non-toxic finish for safety, and it expands from 31 to 50 inches. Compared to make budget pet gates, this gate offers a generous height of 32 inches, and it can be used in doorways, hallways, and at the top or bottom of stairs. Easy to install and remove, this wooden pet gate is also great for babies and small children.

Pet bloggers and buyers alike praise the gate for its affordability and good construction. Rover describes the Evenflow Position and Lock Tall Wood Gate as a “great option if you’re looking for something simple and affordable.” Pet Life Today also likes its height and how easy it is to fold up and store when not in use.

The best walk-through dog gate

Why you'll love it: The Carlson Extra-Wide Walk-Through Pet Gate has a sturdy construction and a lever-style handle for easy operation.

If you plan to use your pet gate as a semi-permanent installation in your home, you should consider buying a walk-through model. Walk-through pet gates typically feature a hinged door that you can latch to keep your dog confined and unlatch if you want to step through the gate instead of over it. Walk-through pet gates come in all sizes, but we like the Carlson Extra-Wide Walk-Through Pet Gate for its height, durability, and added features.

This metal pet gate is made with a sturdy, lead-free metal frame and has a pressure-mount system for simple installation. The gate measures 30 inches tall so it can be used for small to medium-sized dogs, and it expands from 29 to 37 inches with the included extension kit.

Not only does the Carlson Extra-Wide Walk-Through Pet Gate feature a lever-style handle for easy operation, but it has a smaller door at the bottom for cats to walk through.

The best super wide dog gate

Why you'll love it: Wide enough to cover even the largest spaces, the Regalo Super Wide Gate can even be used as a playpen.

If you have a doorway that is abnormally large or you need to cover a space that is very wide, a traditional pet gate might not cut it – you might need a super-wide pet gate. These pet gates usually consist of hinged panels that can be manipulated to cover wide spaces, and some can even be used as playpens. Our top pick for the best super-wide pet gate is the Regalo Super-Wide Gate.

With an all-steel frame for strength and support, the Regalo Super Wide Gate doubles as a pet gate and a playpen. It can stretch to a full 192-inch width. The steel gate is non-toxic and chew-proof as well, so you can count on this gate for a long time.

It features eight panels that fold flat for storage or transport as well as a convenient walk-through design with a safety lock. By maneuvering the panels, you can use this gate freestanding or use the included wall mounts for permanent installation.

Top Dog Tips says the Regalo Super-Wide Gate is one of the best indoor dog gates due to the attractive design and versatility. Woof Whiskers also reviews this gate favorably, stating that it can be mounted to the wall for security or even used as a circular playpen for dogs and puppies.

In addition to carrying an Amazon’s Choice award, the Regalo Super Wide Gate has a solid 4.3-star rating and over 3,000 reviews. Buyers love the versatility and simple design, though there are some comments that the gate could be sturdier.

Cons: May not stand up to rough treatment, eight-panel length takes time to assemble and move

  • How much money it takes to be "rich" varies from city to city.
  • About 20% of Americans are upper-income, or "rich," meaning they earn at least two times the national median household income.
  • The amount of money it takes to be considered rich is largest in San Jose, California.

Everything in life is relative.

That phrase is especially true when looking at how much money it takes to be considered "rich" in different US cities.

While terms like "middle class" and "rich" are used broadly — and often incorrectly — they can be quantified using federal data.

About 20% of Americans are upper-income, or "rich,"according to the Pew Research Center. This group of earners makes at least two times the national median household income: $59,039 in 2016, according to the latest data from the US Census Bureau's 2016 American Community Survey.

Nationally, the threshold for "rich" is $118,080, but that figure varies from city to city depending on the local median income.

To get a sense of how much you need to earn to be considered above-middle-class in different cities, Business Insider pulled census data for the largest metropolitan statistical areas. For clarity, we listed the largest city in the MSA (some include more than one).

Below, find out what it takes to be considered rich in the 42 largest metro areas in the US, plus what income is needed to be in the top 1% in those states.

Over 45 million people are playing a bizarre shooter that pits 100 players against each other in a fight to the death — here's what's going on

$

In 2000, a bizarre and controversial film named "Battle Royale" was released. In the film, dozens of Japanese high-school students are placed on an island, given weapons, and ordered to kill one another until one person remains.

That person is crowned the winner. Their prize is survival.

Battle Royale

Its plot is similar to "The Hunger Games," but "Battle Royale" is a far more brutal film. There is no prevailing heroine, no odds overcome. "Battle Royale" is a bleak, suspenseful, violent movie.

A breakout game named "Fortnite: Battle Royale" takes the concept of "Battle Royale"— a 1-versus-100 fight to the death — and puts it in a colorful, surreal world. Instead of gritty, it's goofy.

And — unbelievably — it succeeds. "Fortnite: Battle Royale" is a delight!

Fortnite: Battle Royale

"Fortnite: Battle Royale" is available on nearly everything, from PlayStation 4 to Xbox One to PC and Mac. Even better: It costs nothing. It's no surprise that somewhere in the ballpark of 45 million people now own the game.

After just six months of availability, "Fortnite: Battle Royale" is the most-watched game on Twitch, the world's largest game-streaming platform. A whopping 3.4 million people were playing the game concurrently at one point in February.

So what gives? Why is this game blowing up? Here's the deal!

"Fortnite: Battle Royale" takes something familiar — shooters — and twists it in a subtle way to make it fresh.

If you own a game console, chances are you're familiar with shooters — be they first-person (like "Call of Duty") or third-person (like "Gears of War"). "Fortnite: Battle Royale" falls into the latter category, with your character's avatar taking up prominent screen space.

The goal, in the broadest sense, is simple: You have one life, and winning means survival.

But living through the cartoon violence of "Fortnite" is difficult — there are a few dozen other players also trying to be the last person alive, and they've got weapons.

And like other "Battle Royale" shooters, "Fortnite: Battle Royale" is based on a single, large island with an ever-shrinking habitable area. If you're outside of that area, your health begins to drain until you're dead — in this way, players are forced together rather than able to hide.

In that sense, it's important to aggressively go after the enemy. But also, watch your back!

There are major differences between "Fortnite: Battle Royale" and the game it's inspired by, "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds."

The first thing you do in "Fortnite: Battle Royale" is jump out of a purple flying bus and parachute down to an island. The island is full of distinct regions, and it's littered with resources: Guns, explosives, med packs, shields, and various materials (wood, brick, metal).

With nothing other than a pick-axe, you desperately need resources to survive. This is a nearly direct mirror of the experience in another popular, Battle Royale-style shooter: "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds,"

But there are major differences right off the bat.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Rather than simply picking up weapons and healing kits, "Fortnite: Battle Royale" also has a construction element to it. Thus why you're picking up materials — stuff like wood, brick, and metal. Alternatively, you can use your pick-axe to mine the materials yourself, like you would in "Minecraft" (as seen above).

The world is destructible, so with every swing of your pick-axe you'll wear down whatever object you're striking — whether it's a tree or a brick wall.

There are loads of parallels between the two games, but "Fortnite: Battle Royale" is immediately distinguished by this crucial difference.

I was skeptical of "Fortnite: Battle Royale," and it proved me wrong.

In 2017, when "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" was dominating the conversation and drawing millions of new players every day, the big question became, "Who is going to copy this format and do it bigger?"

Epic Games answered that question in September 2017 with "Fortnite: Battle Royale," a free mode for its "Fortnite" game based on the concept of "PUBG."

Better than just being free, "Fortnite: Battle Royale" was available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 months before "PUBG" could get there. Great for players, no doubt, but not a great look in terms of perception. Was Epic Games rushing out a copycat mode to beat out the competition? More awkwardly, the software that created "PUBG" is made by none other than Epic Games — the Unreal Engine. It looked like Epic Games might be undercutting its own client and copying the client's idea.

There was even a press release from Bluehole Studio, the company behind "PUBG," criticizing Epic Games. "We are concerned that 'Fortnite' may be replicating the experience for which 'PUBG' is known," Bluehole vice president and executive producer Chang Han Kim said.

But actually playing the game demonstrates relatively quickly why "Fortnite" is doing something different.

Between "Super Mario Odyssey,""PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds,""Horizon Zero Dawn," and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," it's going to be hard to top 2017's game line-up.

But 2018 has some massive games of its own.

Red Dead Redemption 2

From major new Nintendo games to highly-anticipated sequels, 2018 is full of promising new games. As such, we've put together a thorough list of games that should officially be on your radar this year.

Perhaps we forgot your favorite game? Let us know! This list will be updated over time, and your contribution is much appreciated!

SEE ALSO: A ton of great games came out in 2017 — these are the 10 best

1. "Dragon Ball Fighter Z"

If you even remotely care about the "Dragon Ball" universe, you probably already know what "Dragon Ball Fighter Z" is. Even if you don't, you should: It's a gorgeous, unique fighting game that doesn't require a burning passion for anime to enjoy.

The game plays out similarly to the "Marvel vs Capcom" franchise, with each player selecting a team of three to fight as. You can switch between that trio during a match — matches play out in 2.5D, where the fight is on a 2D plane but the visuals are in gorgeous 3D. If you're a "Dragon Ball" fan you'll enjoy it more, but this one looks like a delight for anyone who enjoys a good fighting game period.

Release Date: January 26, 2018

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

2. "Monster Hunter: World"

"Monster Hunter: World" is the latest major entry in the long-running, cult-classic "Monster Hunter" series.

If you're wondering what the game is about, look no further than the on-the-nose name: You hunt monsters, repeatedly, in the third-person. This is a game about exploring a massive world and taking down its massive monsters. You can do that alone, or you can do that with up to four friends, but the goal remains the same: Murder monsters, take the loot you get from those monsters, and use it to take down more monsters.

Release Date: January 26, 2018

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC (release date unknown for PC version)

3. "Shadow of the Colossus"

In 2018, the best game from 2005 arrives on the PlayStation 4. It's called "Shadow of the Colossus," and it's getting a gorgeous remake on the PlayStation 4.

When the game originally launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, it was a revelation for PlayStation 2 owners. Though it may look like a standard video game, "Shadow of the Colossus" is anything but — the diminutive character you see above is who you play as, and he's got an objective: Take down gigantic monsters. But why? And what are these "monsters"? Are they monsters, or is he, for murdering them?

Release Date: February 6

Platforms: PlayStation 4
