Lego X Wing7

"Star Wars" fans rejoice: A full-size Lego X-Wing has landed in Times Square, New York City.

The life-sized model is actually the largest Lego construction ever. It weighs in at over 23 tons, and is comprised of 5,335,200 bricks. The sculpture is 11 feet tall and 43 feet long, with a 44-foot wingspan.

It was constructed at the Lego Model Shop in Kladno, Czech Republic before it was shipped out to New York.

There's also a Lego Chewy, R2D2, C3PO and Porkins on display.

Of course, we had to see this marvel for ourselves, so we hiked it down to Times Square to snap a few pictures.

17 Major US Bridges That Should Be Fixed Immediately

bridge collapse

The collapse of a bridge carrying Interstate Highway 5 in Washington State on Thursday has reignited the debate about America's decaying infrastructure.

Although this collapse was apparently caused by a truck with an oversize load hitting a girder, the bridge was not in great condition to start.

The bridge was inspected last year and received a "sufficiency rating" of 47 out of 100, according to The Wall Street Journal. That's not great, but there are worse bridges out there.

It was not among the 11.5 percent of US bridges, crossed by an average of 282,672,680 vehicles daily, deemed "structurally deficient" by the Federal Highway Administration in 2011.

A rating of structurally deficient or functionally obsolete doesn't mean a bridge is necessarily near collapse. But all of them need work, and many hold up traffic on some of America's busiest roadways.

Using a report from Transportation for America, we have picked out 17 of the most heavily-trafficked, structurally deficient, and functionally obsolete bridges in America.

I-95 over Hendricks Ave. (Jacksonville, Fla.)

172,000 vehicles drive over it every day.

68.3/100 sufficiency rating

According to the FHWA, the bridge's deck is in poor condition.

A sufficiency rating is the FHWA's measure of a bridge's sufficiency to stay in service. Each of these bridges has a rating below 80, which is the threshold below which a bridge is considered deficient or functionally obsolete. Analysis provided by National Bridge Inventory and Transportation For America.

I-64 ramp at River Rd. (Louisville, Ky.)

144,000 vehicles drive over it every day.

66/100 sufficiency rating

The bridge is rated "functionally obsolete, meaning that it is "no longer by design functionally adequate for its task."

I-35E over Pennsylvania Ave. (St. Paul, Minn.)

154,000 vehicles drive over it every day.

64/100 sufficiency rating

According to the FHWA, the bridge's deck, superstructure, and substructure are in poor condition.

11 Reasons Why Getting An MBA Is Better Than Getting A CFA

$

stanford graduate school of business

Last month, Business Insider took a deep dive into how to decide whether you should get your CFA or MBA— now we're getting more personal.

We found that both accreditations have their purposes. For example, the CFA charter is better if you want to be an analyst, and the MBA is better if you want a more diverse skill set.

But this is a hotly debated topic, one that get people frothing at the mouth and rolling their eyes.

So there's a lot more to be broken down here.

We reached out to sources who hold either CFA charters or MBA degrees to find out what makes one better than the other. This time around we're featuring the MBA, but don't worry, the CFA will get its day.

Better networking during the process.

According to our sources, Business School is where you meet people — your classmates, faculty, speakers, recruiters. They all come to you.

A better-connected alumni base.

The CFA Institute is trying to get better, but it just doesn't have the close-knit alumni community that Business Schools around the country have been fostering for decades. If you think you'll need that, the MBA is a  better option.

Better for working in a variety of sectors.

Yes, you'll likely concentrate in a certain skill set, but with the variety of business classes at your disposal, the MBA is better for working in different kinds of jobs from business journalism to the C-suite.

Oof.

While the Japanese Mega Potato has more than 1,000 calories, that number is not shocking for fast food or even chain restaurant menu items.

Stalwarts of indulgence like Cheesecake Factory and Burger King also made our list for their calorie-coma concoctions, along with a massive smoothie from Smoothie King.

Check out the gallery to see what you can eat to challenge the structural integrity of your waistband.

17. Burger King's Triple Whopper has 1,020 calories.

"Our Triple Whopper Sandwich boasts three savory fire-grilled beef patties topped with juicy tomatoes, fresh cut lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, crunchy pickles, and sliced white onions on a soft sesame seed bun," the fast food giant writes.

16. Quizno's large Veggie Deluxe sandwich has 1,060 calories.

Cheese and guacamole add calories to this otherwise healthy sub.

15. Burger King's Ultimate Breakfast Platter has 1,070 calories.

The dish comes with generous helpings of sausage, pancakes, eggs, and hash browns. If that isn't enough, you also get a biscuit.

Lunch Break Ragers Are Totally A Thing In New York City [PHOTOS]

crazy fun at the lunch party

Media company Flavorpill, along with Absolut Vodka, have come up with a new party concept called Lunch Break.

Lunch Break is a one-hour, full-on dance party that brings the free spirit of nightlife culture to the middle of the day.

This one's for the salad warriors — for the people who normally spend their lunch hour munching on chickpeas, replying to clients' e-mails, or fiddling with their excel models.

Lunch Break offers an alternative. It encourages you to once in a while get out of your seat, bypass your usual chopped salad spot, and go to a rager for an hour. Have one drink. Dance. Then go back to work, sit in your seat, and get back to your normal routine.

How's that sound?

It's what Flavorpill has been trying to get workers around NYC to do since last summer. They've been planning some of the most innovative parties in the country for the last 12 years. They like mashing things up — having dancers in the Guggenheim, putting house DJs in the MOMA.

Business Insider checked out the last edition, which was held Thursday afternoon in downtown New York City. Questlove DJ'd.

Already know about Lunch Break? Click here to check out our experience >

Questlove is a serious DJ. Lunch Break's spinners have all been top quality. Flavorpill has picked serious New York City nightclubs as the venues. Lunch Break isn't an amateur attempt at a gimmick party, it's the real deal.

Founder Sascha Lewis explained that the combination of aesthetics is an important part of the experience of escape. At the party, he's everywhere — part host, part hype man, dancing hard and moving incognito among the crowd.

"Flavorpill is trying to use culture to transport you to a different place where all that matters is the party," he explained in a phone interview.

The music wakes people's bodies up.

"That's part of the mission of Flavorpill," said Lewis, "to get people off the couch and away from their computers and out having amazing cultural experiences."

Lunch Breaks are an idea that may have come at just the right time as more and more workers have flexible schedules and can work remotely.

Nate, a 38-year-old ad salesmen we met at the party said plainly: "As long as I get my work done, my boss doesn't care."

Nate has been to Lunch Break parties before. As he flirted with us, he said the concept was good, the music was always top notch and the women were always good looking.

It's light-hearted fun in the middle of a work day. There were suits and creatives there. We met lawyers and even a banker, and no, he wouldn't tell us what he does. At the end of the party Flavorpill sends partiers home with a brown paper bag lunch.

Lewis is now working on expanding Lunch Break to Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

Think it'll catch on? We think it just might. See you at the next one!

The party was held at Avenue, a popular NYC nightclub, at 12:30 p.m. It was pouring, but the line kept growing.

Just so you know, this is the space before. Keep this picture in mind.

In true Flavorpill fashion there were party favors — sunglasses (pictured) and glow sticks.

12 Jobs That Must Evolve Or Die

Running behind

Once upon a time, good employees updated their job skills and advanced to the next career level with the regularity of Mario questing for Princess Peach.

But then technology proliferated, and the well-read encyclopedia salesman, savvy VCR repairman and worldly travel agent either faded away or morphed into updated versions of their former selves.

Are you prepared for an evolving work environment or, worse, job extinction? Don't be the Cro-Magnon who creates trendy CD artwork in an MP3 world.

Check out these jobs on the brink and remember, clever and creative are transferable skills — if you're adaptable and ready for the next big thing.

Librarian

Glamour girl Google and her friends Bing, Yahoo and Cha Cha dethroned the trusty silencer of the stacks, our public librarian.

Now, the local library is online, shoes and shirts are no longer required and we can use our "outdoor voice" indoors if we are so inspired. Will the decibel diva's future be shelved?

Verdict: Evolved. Although virtual media and the Internet search deleted the Dewey decimal system, people still enjoy reading books the old-fashioned way and appreciate research help. The new librarian is a digital archivist, savvy with searches, keywords and helpful websites.

Professional typist

Words per minute used to mean something when errors required a tedious application of white-out. But word processing on virtual paper has removed the wow factor of typing perfection.

Professional typists lost out to the backspace key. And also to spell check, which can rack up artificial IQ points as easily as a good video game cheat code.

Verdict: Evolving. Since even "hunt and peck" keyboarders can tap out an email, top typists need additional software proficiencies to keep a spot at the keyboard.

Video store clerk

Video store clerks usually knew the quirky art house film your friend recommended that had a foreign word in the title and starred the guy with the spiky hair. (And they’d find it, too, if they weren't busy whispering into their cell phone behind the counter or inventorying microwave popcorn in the back.)

With live streaming movies on the web and mailbox deliveries, however, video stores -- and clerks -- are edging into relic status.

Verdict: Extinct. No more just-before-midnight returns to avoid late fees. And, alas, no job security for the guy who could name every species inhabiting the Star Wars galaxy.

"Fast and Furious 6" hits theaters this weekend, packed with an amazing roster of cars and over the top action sequences.

But the movie franchise would never have started without real life inspiration.

Before you head to the movies, here's a look at the real street racers of Los Angeles, where the original "The Fast and the Furious" film began.

Their driving may not be as outrageous as that of their movie counterparts, but those who choose to race illegally face the same serious, even deadly consequences.

Southern California is considered the birthplace of drag racing. Here's driver Don Garlits in 1961, racing his Chrysler Swamp Rat.

New Satellite Pictures Show A Revolution Waiting To Happen In Bahrain

bahrain satelliteBahrain's poor and overcrowded Shiite majority learned what a raw deal they were getting in 2006, when they saw satellite images of lavish palaces and empty land owned by the Sunni monarchy.

The images, which circulated in PDF form after the government blocked Google Earth, spurred growing unrest about the lack of affordable housingIn 2011 this unrest broke out into large nonviolent protests as part of the Arab Spring.

Following a brutal and largely ignored crackdown on protests, however, the housing crisis has only gotten worse.

Around 54,000 requests for government housing were still pending action as of March 2013, up from 46,000 in March 2011. That's a lot of angry people waiting to rise up again against the U.S.-friendly regime.

As for those satellite images, new surveillance confirms that things are as bad as ever. We have included new satellite images along with slides from the anonymous PDF that set off protests in the first place.

Bahrain is a tiny island in the Gulf — approximately one fifth the size of Rhode Island — with a population of 1.3 million. It gets crowded.

Satellite image from 2013.

What makes things really bad is that most of that population (primarily Shias) is packed into one corner of the island, while huge tracts of land owned by the (Sunni) monarchy are empty but for a few palaces.

Satellite image from 2013.

Social unrest started building in 2006, when satellite images along with comments from anonymous activists started getting passed around.

Disturbing Photos Of China's Deadly Coal Mines

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal. Coal has contributed to China's pollution problem, and the coal mines are said to be the deadliest in the world, killing thousands of miners a year.

To combat the recent slump in coal prices, the coal industry is said to have asked the government to restrict coal imports to China through quality control. Some argue that the slump is being driven not by oversupply, but because of a lack of demand.

But with China continuing to industrialize at a rapid pace, the importance of coal is unlikely to diminish in the coming years.

9 Things Windows Phones Can Do That The iPhone Can't (MSFT, AAPL)

HTC Windows 8x Phone BIG

Microsoft's mobile operating system for smartphones, Windows Phone 8, has a unique approach to the traditional smartphone.

Instead of showing you rows of static icons like you see on the iPhone, Windows Phones have "Live Tiles" that update with real-time information from your apps.

But that's just scratching the surface. Windows Phones offer several features you won't find on the iPhone.

The operating system supports phones with bigger screens. The biggest iPhone only has a 4-inch screen. Windows Phones can be 4.5 inches or larger.

They can run Microsoft Office apps like PowerPoint and Word. Microsoft has refused to make Office apps for the iPhone (so far), so you're stuck using alternatives like Apple's own iWork suite of software.

You can customize your home screen's Live Tiles by resizing them. Apple doesn't let you customize what apps show up on your iPhone's home screen.

The Porn Industry Has Already Dreamed Up Some Awesome Ideas For Google Glass (GOOG)

$
0
0

google glass pornOn a long enough timeline a majority of technology gets re-appropriated for our sexual gratification.

Some products get into the erotic side of things later in their life cycles, but some get heaps of sexy attention right away.

So it's time to ask how Google Glass will be used for porn.

We talked to some active professionals working in the pornography industry to get their opinions on how Google's face-based computer will factor into (and maybe even change) the business.

Since it records video from the wearer's perspective, the immediate thought is that Glass would make an awesome means to record point-of-view porn, sinking a viewer into exactly what the actor sees.

Lee Roy Myers of WoodRocket.com told us he feels that "if the quality is high and the footage is not too dizzying, it will offer viewers a completely new POV porn viewing experience. We can get shots that we never could before because of the placement and size of the camera. Is it the future of porn? I don't know. But I am excited to try it and see."

But forget for a moment those worries of video production. Google Glass has a nice feature for the more pragmatic porn customer — it's hands-free.

"I see Glass taking the porn viewing experience into a place where it’s completely hands-free, and which greatly reduces distractions that might be 'mood killers,'" said Allison Vivas, president of porn site Pink Visual.

And it's no secret that the porn industry has been rocky in the past — with so many sites streaming adult content for free, there's often little or no motivation to shell out the cash that would otherwise compensate the actors, directors, crew, and the like. But Vivas thinks Glass presents a real opportunity here, saying "if Glass somehow introduces a means to supply consumers with a porn experience that can’t be pirated, that would be an enormous boon to the adult industry, as we’ve been absolutely ravaged by content piracy in recent years."

Gamelink is a more than 20-year veteran of the adult industry and focuses on digital distribution of porn films. When I spoke to CEO Jeff Dillon, he made a cool distinction — Gamelink is a technology company, not a porn company. "We're the Amazon of porn," he said. "So I'd love to see a Glass app that can recognize sex toys used in movies then take the user to a place online where they can buy them." In a roundabout way, Dillon's vision has Google Glass making a weird sort of "in-app purchase" device.

And let us not forget the actors themselves! We spoke to Joanna Angel, a self-identifying "porn-trepreneur" who's worked in the industry for 10 years, currently running an adult site called Burning Angel. When the inevitable "Would you ever get bored and watch a movie on Google Glass while having sex?" question rolled around, she fired back that "that'd be like having sex in a movie theater. That's pretty cool."

We asked her if Glass was just a fad and she confessed that she wasn't sure. "One thing, though," she added. "Every new invention — if it sticks — porn will find a way to use it ... It just takes a little while."

The 5 Biggest Summer Box-Office Showdowns

$

fast and furious 6 tank ford escort mustang

Summer is when Hollywood studios roll out their heavyweight contenders and look for knockouts. There are 41 movies set for wide release between May and August this year, and the overall box office is expected to exceed last year’s $4.3 billion.

With so many releases -- and we're not counting the indies -- the studios have been forced to schedule some high-profile and pricey movies up against each other.

That’s good news for moviegoers. It means there's a little more variety than last summer, which was superhero-saturated and saw “The Avengers,” “Dark Knight Rises” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” rank as the top three movies.

See photos60 Summer Movies Looking for Your Box Office Bucks

But for the studios, it seriously raises the competitive bar and financial stakes. Paramount’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” was the only wide release last weekend, but things are getting crazy crowded now.

Will college students spark more to a third dose of Wolfpack debauchery, or a sixth lap of dynamite downshifting? Who will teenagers find cooler, Gru’s minions or Johnny Depp’s Tonto? Can Brad Pitt and zombies punch out Pixar?

Here are breakdowns on five of the best multiplex matchups:

"The Hangover III" vs. "Fast and Furious 6": Memorial Day Weekend

The summer’s first major smackdown -- with young men the target audience -- could be its best.

Warner Bros. showed how badly it wants to win when it moved the opening of its comedy “Hangover III” up a day. That could mean the Wolfpack will wind up with around the same $100 million for the long holiday weekend that Vin Diesel should drive for Universal. And it could help both films.

As “Hangover” director Todd Phillips said at CinemaCon, “I think people will go to two movies in five days.” "Hangover III" will be the summer's first big comedy, but the Justin Lin-directed action film has more momentum coming in: “Fast Five” was the franchise’s biggest earner. With Fox targeting the family crowd and rolling out the animated “Epic” on the same weekend, it could be a record-breaking holiday.

Advantage: “Fast and Furious 6.”

“The Internship” vs. “This Is Is the End”: June 12

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson reteam for the first time since “The Wedding Crashers" as displaced-by-digital salesmen who land jobs as Google interns in the Fox comedy "The Internship.”

It opens a few days earlier on June 7 and could have a broader base because it's PG. But Sony's “This Is the End” will have the last laugh if the social media buzz surrounding Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen's R-rated raunch and gore-fest translates to box office. James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel and Michael Cera play obnoxious versions of themselves dealing with the apocalypse -- at a party.

Advantage: “This Is the End.”

“Monsters University” vs. “World War Z”: June 21

There’s no reason to think “Monsters” won’t be the 14th Pixar movie in a row to open at No. 1. It was 12 years ago, but the original “Monsters” made $255 million in the U.S., and this time Disney will get the benefit of a 3D pricing boost.

Paramount’s zombie invasion film “World War Z” has endured production delays, overruns that have driven its budget to $200 million and a re-shot ending. Still, the Max Brooks novel upon which it is based was a huge bestseller. That will draw fans of the book and Pitt’s box-office track record on high-profile projects is solid. But early projections have “Monsters University” opening to $70 million, and “World War Z” roughly $40 million.

Advantage: “Monsters University.”

Here Are Some Great-Tasting And Totally Edible Bugs

Eating insects buffalo worms

Last week, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization suggested that edible insects could help secure the global food supply, fight world hunger, reduce greenhouse gases, and help save the environment.

We started wondering, which insects could we incorporate into our diet?

About two billion people around the world, mostly in tropical regions, already belong to cultures that traditionally consume insects. Insect-eating is even making its way into high-end dining.

We talked to Purdue University entomologist Tom Turpin and one of the report's co-authors, Arnold van Huis, for insights into the best edible bugs.

Mealworms are one of the few edible insects commercially available throughout the United States. They have a lot of healthy fats and are high in Vitamins A and B (including B12). "We gave people mealworm meatballs, which in a blind taste test they preferred over regular meatballs," van Huis said.
