15 Tips For Surviving On A Bike In New York City

0
0

biking bike on brooklyn bridge nyc

The key goal of Citi Bike, New York City's new bike share program, is to encourage residents and visitors to try cycling as a means of urban transport.

Biking in the city comes with a lot of benefits: It's healthy, convenient, gets you outside, and reduces carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

This is a great idea until you start thinking about all the folks out there with as much experience biking as flying a space shuttle picking up a bike and tooling around New York City.

Novices will use Citi Bikes and will be sharing space with fast-moving cars and pedestrians. This is equal measures terrifying and amusing.

So if you are thinking about getting on a bike in NYC, whether on your own wheels or on a Citi Bike, here are 15 rules to keep you (and those around you) safe, legal, and from drawing the ire of New Yorkers.

Find bike lanes before you go. Use Google Maps’s “Bicycling” feature, or download a 2013 NYC bike map at nyc.gov.

You don't have to bike in a suit. If you can’t shower at the office or a gym nearby, consider biking in a t-shirt, then changing once you’ve arrived. Bring deodorant.

Take your time. Just like you can walk instead of run, you can bike slowly instead of quickly. Cycling can be a “fast form of pedestrianism,” rather than exercise. That cuts down on the stress and the sweating.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: A Real Estate Tycoon Is Selling His Insane Hamptons Home For $58.5 Million

Hamptons White HouseReal estate investor Andrew Borrok has once again listed his 20,000-square-foot mansion in the Hamptons for $58.5 million, according to The Real Deal.

The eight-bedroom home in Water Mill was first listed for the same price back in 2010, The New York Post reported. Borrok originally bought the property in 2003 for $3.6 million.

The estate, which is currently listed with Douglas Elliman, has a tennis court, Jacuzzi, infinity pool, eight fireplaces, a wine cellar, and a private pier right on Mecox Bay. It sits on four acres of land.

The property also comes installed with Crestron security cameras that can be controlled and monitored from anywhere in the world — an important security measure for anyone willing to spend $58 million on a house.

The home was previously listed with Douglas Elliman for an undisclosed price back in January of this year.

An aerial view of the huge 315 Rose Hill Road property shows its proximity to Mecox Bay.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Past Spelling Bee Champions

Rebecca Sealfon

You obviously have to be pretty bright and extremely dedicated to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

But does that lead to future success?

For the most part, yes. Among the winners, there are lots of graduates of top schools, and plenty of successes.

Unsurprisingly, many of them go into brainy professions, becoming doctors and lawyers. But there are some pretty unusual choices too, from a Web entrepreneur, to a voice-over actor, and a professional poker player.

One became a prominent journalist and was part of a newspaper team that won a Pulitzer prize.

1992 winner Amanda Goad went to Harvard Law School and now works as a staff lawyer on the ACLU's LGBT and AIDS rights project.

1981 winner Paige Pipkin Kimble, right, was runner up in 1980 to Jacques Bailly, left. She couldn't shake the spelling bee; she currently serves as its executive director.

Bailly, the 1980 winner, is an associate professor of Classics at the University of Vermont and the bee's official pronouncer.

Despite Drone Transparency Push, White House Won't Comment On Big Strike In Pakistan

The number two Taliban official in Pakistan is dead, the Pakistani Taliban has confirmed, along with six others, likely at the hands of an American drone. This just days after President Obama pledged to scale back his controversial drone program.

Now the White House is playing coy.

The very first question in yesterday's daily press briefing came from the Associated Press, and tested the limits of Obama’s pledge:

"Last week, the President spoke about greater transparency in its drone program," the AP reporter asked. "And in that spirit, I want to ask whether you can confirm reports of a drone attack that killed a Pakistani Taliban leader today in Pakistan?"

Carney responded that he was unable to confirm or deny the death of Waliur Rehman.

"If those reports were true or prove to be true, it’s worth noting that his demise would deprive the TTP -- Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan -- of its second in command and chief military strategist," the White House Press Secretary said.

While Carney did not explain why he was unable to confirm Rehman's death, he did clarify that more transparency "does not mean that we would be able to discuss the details of every counterterrorism operation."

In response to the strike, Taliban officials in Pakistan have pledged to hold the newly elected government of Pakistan responsible for the prevalence of U.S. drones in the skies.

"We hold the government of Pakistan responsible for this killing," a Taliban spokesman told Reuters. "We will teach a lesson to Pakistan and United States for depriving us of our beloved leader."

Rehman was reportedly open to peace talks with the Pakistani government.

Incoming Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticized the American drone program shortly after his election.

"Drones indeed are challenging our sovereignty,"Sharif said."Of course we have taken this matter up very seriously. I think this is a very serious issue, and our concern must be understood properly."

75 people have been killed at the hands of American drones in Pakistan so far this year, according to reports

16 Brain Foods You Should Eat To Boost Productivity

girl eating berriesThe ingredients you eat enter your blood stream and flow to the brain, so inevitably, the way you think, focus and work is literally the food you eat.

But you can increase this brain power by 20%, according to the World Health Organization.

"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain,"Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science, says in his research about brain foods.

"Diet, exercise and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function. This raises the exciting possibility that changes in diet are a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities, protecting the brain from damage and counteracting the effects of aging."

To get an understanding of what's going to affect our body's energy system, we compiled a list of brain foods from Psychology Today and other sources that will improve the way you think and work.

Berries have potent combinations of antioxidants that improve both memory and motor coordination.

Neuroscientist James A. Joseph says that the antioxidants in berries counteract oxidative stress and function as anti-inflammatory agents, which are "the evil twins of brain aging."

Berries eaten with oil-rich walnuts or avocados keep brain cell membranes "youthfully flexible."

A banana holds the daily amount of glucose needed for your brain.

Researcher Leigh Gibson found that "the brain works best with about 25 grams of glucose circulating in the blood stream — about the amount found in a banana."

11 Extravagant Ways Rich Tech Executives Have Spent Their Fortunes

0

richard branson necker island

How do wealthy tech entrepreneurs spend the millions and billions of dollars they've made?

Some give it to charities. Others party portions of it away and buy really expensive toys.

Here are some of the most extravagent ways people like Sean Parker and Larry Page have spent their fortunes.

Sean Parker may be spending up to $10 million on his wedding to Alexandra Lenas, complete with custom-made costumes for each guest, a backdrop, and man-made waterfalls.

Sean Parker is planning an extravagant wedding to the mother of his child, Alexandra Lenas, in June.

The wedding could reportedly cost Parker $10 million. He's hired “Lord of the Rings” costume designer Ngila Dickson to create custom-made outfits for each guest. In addition, the plants and flowers alone are estimated to cost $1 million, The Daily Mail reports. The dance floor that's being put in could be another $350,000. A lot of landscaping has been planned as well; there will reportedly be man-made waterfalls, ruins and more. So much has been leaked about the wedding though, the Parkers may move their wedding location.

The wedding isn't Parker's first jaw-dropping expense. He's known for throwing elaborate parties, and he's reportedly spending 1.5 years in NYC's Plaza Hotel while his 6-story apartment gets renovated.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos* invested $42 million in building a 10,000-year clock.

The clock Bezos is having built in Texas is meant to serve as a symbol to make people think long-term.

"If we think long-term, we can accomplish things that we couldn't otherwise accomplish,"Bezos said in an interview. We humans are getting awfully sophisticated in technological ways and have a lot of potential to be very dangerous to ourselves, and it seems to me that we as a species will have to start thinking longer term. This is a symbol, I think symbols can be very powerful."

Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through Bezos Expeditions.

Early Facebook investor Peter Thiel has invested millions in anti-aging technology because he wants to live forever. He also has invested heavily in establishing colonies of startups off the coast of California.

Peter Thiel gave  $3.5 million in 2006 on anti-aging researcher and it's well known the early Facebook investor wants to live forever.

"He has put money into the projects of more than a dozen biotech companies, from DNA sequencing to cancer treatment to a mobile app called 100 Plus, which encourages healthy behaviors intended to extend lifespan beyond 100 years,"Financial Times writes of his desire to cheat death.

Also, Thiel has invested in Seastead Institute which wants to "colonize the world's oceans." In other words, it is putting up structures in the oceans to avoid dealing with the rules and regulations of different governments. One in particular is Blueseeds, which is off the coast of California, and has the goal of helping non-U.S. entrepreneurs get access to Silicon Valley's resources without Visas. Thiel has donated more than half-a-million to Seastead.

After selling DoubleClick to Google for $3 billion, David Rosenblatt could have ridden board seats and startup investments off into the sunset, never working again.

Instead, Rosenblatt is now the CEO of a New York-based startup called 1stdibs.

1stdibs is an online marketplace for vintage furniture, jewelry, fashion and art. In 2012, 1stdibs dealers sold $650 million worth of merchandise, with transactions averaging around $2,000.

Rosenblatt stepped in for founder Michael Bruno, who ran the company for 10 years before taking a $60 million investment from Benchmark in 2011 and bringing in his own replacement.

Rosenblatt hired up, took another round of funding, and he says 1stdibs traffic is up 200% over last year.

1stdibs sells fancy goods, and it's a pretty fancy place to work, too.

Every Wednesday, the company serves employees a catered white table cloth lunch.

A couple weeks ago, we stopped by during lunch and took a tour of the office.

The office is furnished with lots of unique, high-end furniture.

It gives the space a lot more personality and style than your average office.

The site is a carefully curated marketplace. These are the curators.

This Amazing 'Prancercise' Fitness Video From The 1980s Is Suddenly Going Viral

0
0

"Prancercising," a bizarre exercise routine from the late 1980s, has suddenly gone viral.

Created by Florida resident Joanna Rohrback, prancercising is described as "a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait and ideally induced by elation," according to the official Prancercising website.

The horse-inspired exercise was forgotten for more than two decades before the Internet resurrected it in all its glory.

The "fitness" video shows an ankle-weight-clad Rohrback wearing a bright coral cardigan and tight white pants demonstrating the "four modes" of her highly original workout routine.

"We're gonna really cut the noose and let it loose with the prancercise gallop," she exclaims before frolicking down a deserted path.

The video dates from 1989, but Rohrback has been pressing on with her fitness routine for years. In 2012 she published the book"Prancercise: The Art of Physical and Spiritual Excellence." The cover art alone is worth the purchase.

Over the past four days, Rohrback's goofy video has skyrocketed to over 2 million YouTube hits.

Rohrback herself busted out the moves on the "Today" show, was interviewed by The Daily Beast, and received so many website visits that Prancercise.com crashed on Wednesday.

Though how the 24-year-old video was unearthed still remains a mystery, we should all just be thankful it exists. Watch it below.

14 Hipster-Friendly Hotels Around The World

lloyd hotel hipster amsterdamFrom hostels to penthouse suites, there’s a hotel out there for pretty much every stripe of traveler.

But what if your tastes aren't so easily defined? What if you're just as interested in brown-bagging it on a rooftop as you are in a five-star meal? Dive-bar environments with mint Danish design? What if you're a hip/ster creative-minded millennial?

With more and more of us wanting something that's in between the Four Seasons and Motel 6, a bevy of hotels have been popping up to cater to our curated needs.

Whether you’re an art-festival aficionado or a jet-setting bohemian, look no further: These properties are bound to make you feel right at home when you're anywhere but.

Ace Hotel, Palm Springs

A renovated, midcentury motel is the site for the 170-room Ace Hotel & Swim Club, part of the revolutionary Ace Hotel Group behind eponymous venues in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland.

With a bohemian-retro design scheme including record players, vintage vinyl records, and a soothing color palette, the Ace Palm Springs is also home to Coachella events and its very own Craft Beer Festival.

Rooms embrace an outdoor-indoor dynamic, with tent-like walls, concrete floors, and materials such as canvas, butternut wood, denim, and hemp. The massive Swim Club Pool has more than enough space to swim, and hammocks and pillows are scattered about for lounging guests.

Wythe Hotel, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Located in the ne plus ultra of hipster neighborhoods, the Wythe Hotel is by far one of the hippest spots to stay in Brooklyn.

Opened in May '12, the hotel is housed in a converted red-brick factory building on Williamsburg’s scenic waterfront, steps away from such institutions such as Brooklyn Bowl, the Brooklyn Brewery, and the neighborhood's Brooklyn Flea.

With eight stories and 72 rooms, the Wythe’s decor effortlessly speaks to Williamsburg’s aesthetic: Beds crafted from salvaged timber, concrete floors, and custom-made wallpaper abound are the perfect mix of industrial-rustic chic.

The brainchild of Andrew Tarlow — the restaurateur behind the immensely successful Brooklyn eateries Marlow & Sons and Diner — the Wythe also features a farm-to-table restaurant, Reynard’s, which proposes locally sourced dishes such as beef carpaccio, rabbit sausage, and omelets with organic kale and Gruyère cheese.

For those looking for a party, the scene-y terrace cocktail bar is the place to be.

Hotel Nord-Pinus, Tangier, Morocco

The exotic Moroccan city of Tangier is the perfect backdrop for a bohemian vacation, and the Hotel Nord-Pinus is the hotel to book.

Opened by the French hotelier Anne Igou and situated atop the Kasbah’s (Tangier’s historic center) highest point, the site — a former 18th-century pasha’s palace — is a sprawling compound of eclectic regalia. With chandeliers from Syria, contemporary furniture by French designers, and sumptuous fabrics, the hotel also boasts extraordinary views onto the Spanish coast and Atlantic Ocean.

If you feel like channeling Barbara Hutton or the legendary Talitha Getty (both of whom, among other things, famously spent time in Tangier), we recommend lounging about with a glass of Morocco’s famous thé à la menthe on one of the hotel’s relaxing rooftop terraces.

8 College Graduates Who Are Getting Crushed By Student Debt

debt

In four weeks, Congress will decide whether to double the interest rate on subsidized federal student loans to 6.8% or give millions of students a break for yet another year.

President Obama took the mic today in front of dozens of college graduates at the White House to implore lawmakers to cut borrowers some slack.

But for millions of student borrowers, help can't come soon enough.

Last Fall, Robert Applebaum, co-founder of studentdebtcrisis.org, invited students to share their student debt stories in candid Youtube videos submitted online. We thought now was as good a time as any to shed some light on the roughest of the bunch.

"We want the world and our leaders in Washington to see these are not just numbers on a piece of paper," Applebaum told us. "These are real people struggling day to day with student debt."

Charice is only a year out of college but she's $30,000 in debt and has no job prospects. "I'm sitting here living with my boyfriend and his family," she says. "It's pathetic. It really is."

=

"I wish I hadn't gone to school," says Mark, who graduated in 2005 with degrees in psychology and music and $875 monthly payments on $80,000 worth of student loans. "I had to claim bankruptcy ... which of course did nothing to the student loans." (Student loan debt is nearly impossible to discharge through bankruptcy.)

Sue has spent 20 years trying to pay back $29,000 in student loans that have more than doubled to $70,000. "It just started jumping in $5,000 increments every year or two," she says. "I put myself in this coffin, or straight jacket, of a situation unknowingly."

There Are So Many Reasons Why New Grads Should Join Startups

IMG_9851.JPGVenture For America hosted a huge party Thursday night at the IAC headquarters in New York City. It was filled with tech entrepreneurs, including Warby Parker's Dave Gilboa and Rent The Runway's Jen Hyman, among other fashionable guests; but the biggest names in attendance were the keynote speakers, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner and Arianna Huffington.

A crowd of a few hundred was there to support VFA, which has become one of the most important nonprofit organizations in America since Andrew Yang founded it two years ago.

Huffington told Yang on stage: "You were one year old when I met you, and my god, how you've grown. You are now a phenomenal toddler. When you're a teenager, truly watch out."

VFA recruits and trains high-achieving college grads to work for two years at early-stage companies in lower-cost cities, including Detroit, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Cincinnati. Its inaugural class of 40 is now joined by this year's 65 fellows.

So far, the organization has received some big pledges, including $1 million from Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh and $1.5 million from Quicken Loans Founder Dan Gilbert, who are working to revitalize Las Vegas and Detroit, respectively.

Huffington's keynote was about redefining success, which is the essence of what VFA is doing. "For me, spending so much time with a dysfunctional corporate system, it's refreshing to watch what's happening with VFA," she said. "On one side, it's depressing conversations about what's going on in this country, about its deficits. And on the other side, it's about creativity, prioritizing the common good— that's VFA."

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner mingled with fellows and VFA supporters before speaking to the crowd.

This VFA fellow discovered his face on one of the napkins.

There were several fully stocked bars at the IAC headquarters.

Day In The Life Of BWF

Bang With Friends is a hugely popular dating app that allows you to find friends to hook-up with.

The premise is simple. First, select the Facebook friends you want to hook up with, then if they want to hook up with you too you'll be able to chat and take things offline.

Founders Colin Hodge and Omri Mor initially kept their identities a secret because they didn't want the focus to be on them instead of the product.

The veil has since been lifted, but not before Day In The Life Of, a photo blog, followed the guys around and snapped some photos of Hodge and Mor as they worked. We're republishing the photos, with permission.

This is Colin Hodge, Bang With Friends' CEO. Before these photos were taken, Hodge and his co-founder, Omri Moor both wanted to remain anonymous.

Colin starts his day by checking email and making sure he's on top of Bang With Friends' projects.

Soon it's time to head out. Running a hugely successful hook-up app isn't as easy as it seems.

These Are The Best And Worst Things To Buy In June

0
0

apple store berlin

June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year, which for the deal-hunter means that you have even more time to shop!

But before you let the increasingly warm weather convince you to buy less-than-stellar deals, check out our latest buying guide.

We searched through our extensive archives of sales, promotions, coupons, and daily deals to sort the fact from fiction when it comes to getting the best deals in June.

Ladies love cool lingerie (deals): It's usually this month that Victoria's Secret unveils its famed Semi-Annual Sale, and last year we saw prices as low as $4 for panties and $15 for bras.

Moreover, we saw excellent lingerie deals in June from Frederick's of Hollywood, Maidenform, Freshpair, and Bare Necessities, the latter of which had its own Semi-Annual Sale. That said, while summer deals entailed steep discounts last year, they paled in comparison to the October to December time frame; many of these retailers pull out a greater number of Editors' Choice deals for the holiday stretch.

Beef prices are on the rise: Unfortunately for anyone getting ready for a season of grilling, beef prices have risen to historically high prices.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "Retail beef prices are widely expected to set new records in coming weeks after wholesale prices hit an all-time peak this past week." The increases are due to years of drought that have thinned cattle herds, a problem that can't be easily reversed. Maybe take this opportunity to throw leaner foods like chicken and (gasp!) veggie burgers on that gas or charcoal grill.

Grill deals will spark in July: Of course, we can't mention grilling without pointing out that deals on grills themselves will be less than thrilling in June.

You'll get a better discount if you wait for July 4th promotions. According to our deals from last year, you could save as much as $200 or more on a mid- to high-end grill if you wait until July.

Apple's iPad may have set the standard for tablets, but the competition is working hard to catch up.

Microsoft's new PC operating system, Windows 8, is designed to work on regular laptops or desktops, and tablets.

Here are a few things Windows 8 tablets can do that the iPad can't.

You can run two apps at the same time by "snapping" them together. The apps run together in a split screen.

If you have a tablet running the full version of Windows 8 like Microsoft's Surface Pro, you can run regular PC programs.

The home screen is completely customizable. You can hide or uninstall apps you don't want and resize app tiles.
