Satellite photos show what Syrian sites looked like before and after the US-led strikes

Syria Air Strike Damascus

The United States, Britain, and France, conducted "precision strikes" on Syria on Friday, in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack that reportedly killed dozens in the rebel-held town of Douma.

The Pentagon said the strikes hit three targets believed to have been involved in creating chemical weapons.

The sites included the Barzah Research and Development Center near Damascus and the Him Shinshar chemical weapons complex near Homs.

The US military said the strikes "destroyed" Him Shinshar's chemical weapons storage facility, and damaged the chemical weapons bunker.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said "nothing is certain" when asked whether he believed the strikes would deter Syrian President Bashar Assad from using chemical weapons again.

"It was done on targets that we believed were selected to hurt the chemical weapons program. We confined it to the chemical weapons-type targets," he said.

Here are satellite photos showing what the sites looked like before and after the strikes:

3 things you should know if you're considering leaving the city for the suburbs

$

suburbs city

  • Moving to the suburbs offers hidden benefits to students and families alike.
  • Studies from the Census Bureau in 2017 revealed that lower-density suburbs have the fastest growth.
  • Suburban life comes with its own obstacles, but understanding the main ones early on allows movers to be better prepared to live and settle in a new environment.

I moved to California 10 years ago this year, as a college student.

I didn't relocate to Hollywood, Laguna Beach, or any other place that you would recognize from a pop culture reference. Instead, I lived in a suburban city in Ventura County called Thousand Oaks.

Calling the move a major transition is definitely an understatement. Previously, I lived in Saint Louis, Missouri. My home in Saint Louis was in a busy area, across the street from a Dairy Queen and flanked by a tanning salon, a bank branch, and a Sprint store. Living in Thousand Oaks, or TO as the locals call it, was like being in a little bubble. It was quiet, family-friendly, and relatively free of crime.

During the two years I lived there, I was surprised by the number of obstacles I ran into in my daily life.

Here's are three things I wish somebody had told me before I made the move from the city to the suburbs.

SEE ALSO: 12 books you should read before starting a business

1. Everything closes early

Once I moved to the suburbs, I quickly learned that restaurants, pharmacies, grocery stores, and even Starbucks closed early. It was like being Cinderella at the stroke of midnight; only you needed to leave the ball at 9 p.m.

I had grown up surrounded by stores that operated on a 24-hour basis, and knowing that they were open in case of an emergency was comforting to me.

Rather than complain that I had nothing to do, I embraced the shift. I learned how to shop for groceries and take care of errands in the morning. I'd still go out to late-night restaurants and clubs in other areas, but to this day it's still my preference to start running my errands before 10 a.m. on the weekends.

2. You may need a car

I've never owned a car. Not when I was living in Saint Louis, and not when I lived in the suburbs in California. I had a lot of friends in college who would kindly let me carpool from place to place with them. Otherwise, I walked or took the bus or city shuttle service.

Of course, this may not work for everyone living in the suburbs. If you live in an area that isn't densely populated, have school-age children, or have a job that isn't within walking distance of your home, getting a car may make more sense.

However, if you're young and moving to the suburbs, don't immediately buy a car. There is a possibility you might not even need one. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft didn't exist when I first moved to the suburbs, but now you can find them in virtually any city. If your area has plenty of drivers in it, you might consider forgoing the expenses that come with a car — including insurance, gas, and repairs — in favor of taking rideshares instead.

3. It's quiet

This year marks my 10-year anniversary living in the state of California. I even got to fulfill my dream of living in Los Angeles proper a few times! A few years ago, I moved to Westwood and was able to reconnect to my city roots. Stores were open late, I didn't need a car to get around, and the sounds of the city's hustle and bustle were all around me.

Even when I was going to sleep at night. Especially when I was going to sleep at night.

The suburban solitude had spoiled me rotten. Why were so many people talking outside of my apartment? It was 3 a.m.! Didn't anyone go home? I missed being able to crack my window open and only hear the sounds of the chirping crickets and lonely coyotes howling on the mountains.

Silence, although I struggled with it when I first moved to the suburbs, really was golden. It wasn't long before I moved back to Los Angeles County (where I still am today) and remembered that peace and quiet may be one of the greatest aspects of suburban life. If nothing else, it'll make sure you get a good night's sleep.

The most notable — and expensive — financial fraud cases of all time

$

Enron HQ

  • Financial fraud is a major crime which often comes with heavy prison sentences for those involved.
  • Enron, Cendant, and WorldCom are examples of massive companies torn apart by financial fraud and scandal.
  • Individuals can commit these crimes as well, like a pastor and a self-proclaimed financial planner who recently defrauded 29 mostly elderly people of $3.4 million, according to an SEC complaint.
  • Other cases include fraudsters trying to sell the Eiffel Tower and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Financial fraud is a serious white-collar crime that comes with heavy punishment, but the details of the misdeeds can be stranger than fiction.

Case in point: The SEC recently charged Kirbyjon Caldwell, a pastor based in Houston, and self-described financial planner Greg Smith in a scheme that allegedly involved luring innocent people into investing in old Chinese bonds with no worth, with the promise of large returns. Twenty nine mostly elderly investors were swindled out of $3.4 million.

A DOJ press release states that each defendant could face as many as 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine, and five years of supervised release, among other penalties.

Financial fraud isn't new, and the extent of the crime can vary significantly. In some cases, billions of dollars are lost and companies end up bankrupt. Most cases have at least one person, but often a group of fraudsters, going to prison.

Some cases involve forged documents, while others focus on trying to sell an item somebody doesn't own. Ponzi schemes are also common. Even bitcoin has been the source of fraud.

From corporate scandals, to major forgeries, to individual pyramid schemes, keep reading to see the most notable, and expensive, fraud cases of all time.

DON'T MISS: Here's how two wildly successful tech entrepreneurs lost their status amid a case of convoluted fraud

Charles Ponzi

The Italian-born immigrant created such an uproar over his crimes that any investment fraud or pyramid scheme committed bears his name. From 1918 to 1920, Ponzi ran a large scale international trading scheme involving reply coupons on mail stamps.

At one point, Ponzi was making $250,000 a day in post-WWI Boston but ended up owing $7 million and was charged with 86 counts of mail fraud.

Enron

The Houston-based energy company had a mighty collapse in 2001 after a failed merger and, what was at the time, the largest US bankruptcy. Enron committed fraud by overstating earnings. Numerous executives were found guilty of various crimes from obstruction of justice, money laundering, and insider training.

Bernie Madoff

Madoff is currently serving a sentence of 150-years in federal prison for securities fraud. He was a well-respected investor until it was learned that he was operating a Ponzi scheme that lost a record $65 billion for his investors.

Madoff was turned into authorities by his two sons in 2008.

B-1B Lancer refueld by KC-10

The B-1B Lancer was one of many aircraft that the US, France, and UK used in Friday's strike on Syrian government compounds.

The Lancer is a long-range, multi-role heavy bomber that dropped Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, according to The Drive. This would be the first time the munition was used in combat.

The US has not divulged where the Lancers took off, but they may have left from al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, The Drive reported. Either way, the US released a picture of one of the B-1s being refueled by a KC-10 on the day of the strike.

Here's what the Lancer can do and what we know it did on Friday:

It was first used in combat in 1998, and was heavily used in Operation Iraqi Freedom during the Iraq War, dropping nearly 40% of all the coalition's munitions.

The Lancer, which is made by Boeing — one of the largest defense contractors and political donors in the US — will continue to be the backbone of the US strategic bomber force until about 2040.

5 makeup tips everyone who wears glasses needs to know

$
0
0

Lipstick Makeup

  • When applying makeup as a glasses-wearer, you'll want to invest in a good magnifying mirror.
  • Remember that different makeup rules apply for nearsighted and farsighted glasses.
  • To prevent foundation and concealer from sticking to your frames, be strategic about application and be sure to use setting spray to keep the makeup in place.
  • Opt for a lengthening mascara rather than false eyelashes.
  • Balance the look with a bold lip.

In recent years, eyeglasses have really come into their own as a chic fashion statement.

The four-eyed among us may have painful memories of junior-high teasing and "Harry Potter"-esque broken frames, but thanks to trend-setting celebs like Zooey Deschanel and Karlie Kloss, glasses now rank among the hippest accessories around.

Of course, applying makeup can be tricky when impaired vision and bold specs enter the equation. INSIDER consulted a panel of makeup artists to gather their top tips for putting on your face while wearing glasses.

Here's what we learned.

Shell out for an excellent magnifying mirror.

Because glasses-wearers frequently need to remove their specs in order to apply eye makeup, they need a vision-improving tool. According to UK makeup artist Elaine Wilkinson, "the first investment [for glasses-wearers] should be a quality magnifying mirror."

These reflecting surfaces allow nearsighted clients the ability to clearly see what they're doing, even without the help of their glasses. Brands like Hollywood Mirrors, Miusco, and Chende craft mirrors that are pricey, but if you're wearing eye makeup on a daily basis, their technical precision and excellent lighting make them well worth the dough.

Remember that different makeup rules apply for nearsighted and farsighted glasses wearers.

If you're wearing glasses due to nearsightedness, your lens prescription can have a shrinking effect on your eyes. Luckily, some strategic makeup choices can counteract this illusion. "If you're wearing glasses that make your eyes appear smaller, I like to use eyeshadows with a sheen. A satin or shimmer finish will help draw attention to the eyes," recommends NYC-based makeup artist Margina Dennis.

For this purpose, Dennis especially likes the shimmery shadows from Natasha Denona and By Terry. In terms of eyeliner, Dennis suggests a defined liquid or gel liner on the lashline and a highlighting liner in the waterline.

On the flip side, folks who wear glasses for farsightedness often find their eyes magnified by their lenses, pulling focus from the rest of the face. In order to downplay the eyes, Dennis recommends using matte eyeshadows. She also recommends skipping the liquid or gel liner, instead "smudging eyeshadow around the eyes in place of liner" for a more low-key look.

To prevent foundation and concealer from sticking to your frames, begin with matte moisturizer and finish with setting spray.

Glasses-wearers who use facial cosmetics like foundation and concealer are all too familiar with the tendency of these formulas to smear against and stick to frames. If your makeup causes your glasses to slip and slide down the bridge of your nose — an annoying and all-too-common occurrence — NYC makeup artist Kasey Adam Spickard has a simple solution.

"Because makeup can become greasy and glasses can slide down the nose, I like to use a matte moisturizer on the bridge of the nose to prevent oil formation," Spickard tells INSIDER, calling out Bioderma Sebium Mat Control as a particularly effective example.

Once you've finished your face, Spickard recommends a setting spray to preserve the look and keep your glasses in place. "Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray is great and will prevent that dreaded makeup transfer onto your glasses!"

I built and played Nintendo's next big thing, Nintendo Labo — and it was a surprisingly brilliant learning tool

Nintendo's next big thing isn't a video game or a video game console.

It's foldable cardboard.

Nintendo Labo

Nintendo "Labo"— pronounced "lab-oh," like "laboratory"— is an entirely new concept from the quirky Japanese gaming powerhouse. Starting at $70, you get a kit full of buildable cardboard toys to complement the wildly popular Nintendo Switch console. There are games, of course, which are included in the package.

More importantly, there are step-by-step instructions for building each of the toys in the set. Think: Lego meets model airplanes, but more fun.

I got to try Nintendo Labo back in February ahead of its launch on April 20. What I found was a surprisingly brilliant learning tool aimed at kids growing up in a digital world.

SEE ALSO: Nintendo just unveiled an ambitious, bizarre new project called 'Labo' — here's how it works

DON'T MISS: Nintendo’s new idea ‘Labo’ may sound strange, but it’s actually a perfect fit given the company’s 128-year history

Here's the starter kit for Nintendo Labo, which is known as the "Variety Kit."

The $70 "Variety Kit," seen above, is the base level for Nintendo Labo; an $80 "Robot Kit" is also available, which contains a large and complicated robot suit.

There are two main aspects to Labo: Building with cardboard, and then using those creations to play Labo games on the Nintendo Switch.

It's important to note here that you need a Nintendo Switch to play Nintendo Labo games. Think of Labo as essentially a game for the Switch that comes with buildable toys, (though that's underselling it).

In the Variety Kit, there are several different devices to build. I got to try building an RC Car and a fishing pole.

Each Labo build begins with a large sheet of relatively thin cardboard. The cardboard doesn't feel especially tough, but the final creations made with the cardboard are tougher than you'd think.

The RC Car, for instance, begins with the sheet of cardboard seen above. Various shapes are perforated from the cardboard, which get punched out per a set of very charming instructions.

Here's the final product:

Nintendo Labo

You could, of course, just punch out everything immediately — and some people assuredly will do that, especially little kids. That's fine. The instructions will still identify each piece and explain how they all fit together.

Labo, as I discovered, is tremendously forgiving. Just like cardboard! That's kind of the point.

Some fans of the royal family will wait outside for hours for the chance to meet them on one of their royal engagements. But others take their obsession to new heights by pitching a tent.

In anticipation of Kate Middleton giving birth to her third child (she's due any day now), die-hard fans have begun camping out outside the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's in London where she gave birth to Prince George and Princess Charlotte and is expected to deliver her third child.

Here's what it looks like outside the hospital before the royal baby arrives.

Before members of the press gather to capture the first photos of the new royal baby, workers have to build a media pen to contain them.

After giving birth, Kate Middleton will emerge from the hospital camera-ready as per royal tradition.

Some reporters are already on the scene.

The birth will most likely be announced via a Tweet or Instagram post from Kensington Palace.

Here's what the media pen looked like when Princess Charlotte was born in 2015.

9 everyday American things that surprise foreigners

$

school bus yellow skitch

  • Some things Americans find commonplace don't necessarily exist outside of the US.
  • For example, you won't see yellow school buses anywhere else.

There are some American customs that outsiders choose to eschew as a matter of personal taste — the supposedly questionable foods, for example, or the ratio of liquid to ice in drinks.

But some of the things US citizens consider to be commonplace are actually pretty unique to the states.

From bright yellow school buses to toilet stalls with inexplicably wide gaps, you'd be hard-pressed to spot these 9 everyday American things outside of the US.

Fake cheese

Be it plastic-y orange cheese squares to sprayable cheese from a can, foreigners just don't get the whole processed cheese thing.

British Quora users shared which American food items they just don't understand, and processed cheese topped their list more than once.

"Orange 'cheese' squares and/or Cheez Whiz. Just no."— Quora user Adam M. Steiner.

"That peculiar, bright yellow and wholly unnatural looking thing called 'processed cheese.' It's clearly not the work of anything natural."— Quora user Steve Jones.

Tipping 20%

When someone working in the service industry assists you — such as a hairdresser, waitress, or concierge — in North America, it's customary to leave them a tip. And not just any amount — a whopping 20%.

Tipping isn't a commonplace practice in countries such as French Polynesia, Belgium, or Switzerland. More often than not, tipping in other countries simply comprises rounding up the bill. In places such as Japan and Hong Kong, a tip can even be seen as impolite.

Gaps in bathroom stalls

Ok, so wide-gapped toilet stalls probably do exist elsewhere, but nowhere are they as common and pervasive as in the US.

The question of why American bathroom stalls have gaps between the individual stall doors and the frames is one that has beleaguered visiting tourists not once, and not twice, but a seemingly endless amount of times.

NBC once aired a segment of various news anchors participating in the debate; even The Onion has gotten in on the fun.

Prevailing theories include that way back when, US bathrooms were purposely designed to be somewhat revealing, because authorities feared the hijinks people would get into (such as doing drugs or having sex) if they had utter privacy.

The 20 biggest questions we have after 'The Walking Dead' season 8 finale

rick walking dead stained glass

Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for the season eight finale of AMC's "The Walking Dead,""Wrath."

Sunday's "The Walking Dead" finale wrapped up a lot of storylines and may have teased a larger group of villains for next season.

But there are still a lot of open-ended questions the show didn't address. (When are we going to see that helicopter again?) INSIDER rounded up every question we had during and after watching the season eight finale that we hope to see resolved when the show returns.

Who will lead the Sanctuary now?

In the comics, Dwight famously takes over as leader of the Saviors after Negan gets captured. But on the show, he has lost the respect of his fellow Saviors. Without Dwight and Simon, Negan's top men are all but gone.

Maybe one of the women — Arat or Laura, who ratted Dwight out — will take charge.

Did the show hint at its next big villain?

Rick notes that there's a giant herd of the undead in the distance. Some think that may be a hint at the show's next villains, the Whisperers, a group of people who wear the skin of the undead.

Are we going to see Dwight again?

Daryl showed Dwight mercy by letting him go and giving him the keys to a truck to find his ex-wife, Sherry. Daryl probably felt it was the right thing to do since Sherry helped him escape the Sanctuary.

That doesn't mean the two are best buds, though. Daryl said if Dwight ever shows his face again, he's as good as dead.

I flew United's 'basic economy' and discovered a huge problem with the ticket

United Airlines

  • United Airlines began rolling out their basic-economy ticket tier, which has a number of limitations such as a no carry-on bag policy, in early 2017.
  • In May of 2017 I purchased a one-way ticket on United's basic-economy tier.
  • During the purchasing and travel process I learned an important lesson about paying attention to pricing and budgeting when it comes to airfare.

Less than a month after the highly publicized incident of a United Airlines passenger being dragged off an overbooked flight, I needed to purchase a return airline ticket from Austin, Texas, to the New York City area.

On a tight travel budget, I was on the hunt for the most affordable ticket with the shortest travel time. Since getting to and from Austin can typically involve layovers on non-direct flights from New York City, I was enticed by the nonstop flights scheduled from Newark International Airport, in New Jersey, an airport that happens to be one of United's main hubs.

After searching my go-to airlines — Southwest, on which I flew out to Austin from Newark, and American — I begrudgingly went to the website of United, an airline I hadn't flown since 2014.

I found a reasonable nonstop direct flight for $188 on United's basic-economy ticket tier. I thought I had just won the lottery — until the email confirmations for my purchase came.

While United's policy and pricing around which flights offer basic-economy tickets has since been adjusted — making sure you know what you're purchasing and considering all aspects of your travel is an important step when purchasing airline tickets.

SEE ALSO: The new Ritz-Carlton luxury cruise ships for the '1% of global travelers' look like incredible super yachts — and you can start booking next month

I didn't realize it at the time, but the price I found was for a basic-economy ticket — a new tier of ticketing United began rolling out in early 2017. Something like the prompt below appeared as I checked out, but in a rush to get my ticket, I foolishly didn't pay attention. At this point in my purchase, I had a chance to upgrade to economy for $20.

After I purchased my ticket, United sent me three emails, which I thought was excessive, and, in all honesty, figured was a reaction to the incident in April 2017 when then 69-year-old David Dao was forcibly removed from an overbooked flight. "They really want to be sure I know that I don't have an assigned seat," I thought.

By the second email, I realized what I had done. My basic-economy ticket had several restrictions, including not being able to bring a carry-on suitcase. I would be forced to check the carry-on I always take with me on trips for $25, meaning I would pay $5 more than if I had upgraded to the economy ticket.

The best cities in America to build a career while raising a family

mother daughter parent children

  • Some of the best places to live in the US are well-suited for working parents.
  • Personal finance company SmartAsset found the top 10 cities to build a career while raising a family.
  • The results show a clear preference toward small- and medium-size towns far from the East Coast.

New parents who are starting their careers have a difficult choice to make: finding a place to live that gives both themselves and their children the greatest chance of success.

Naturally, some cities in the United States are better suited for working parents than others. Personal finance company SmartAsset rated each US city this week and found the 10 best cities where parents can build their careers while raising their families.

SmartAsset used nine metrics in its calculations:

  • Unemployment rate for a three-month period at the end of 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Median household income, according to the Census Bureau's 1-year American Community Survey.
  • Median annual housing costs, according to the American Community Survey.
  • Percent of workforce working more than 49 weeks per year, according to the American Community Survey
  • Average commute time, according to the American Community Survey.
  • Violent crime rate, or the number of crimes per 100,000 residents, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program
  • High school graduation rate, according to US Department of Education data.
  • State policy benefitting working parents, according to the National Partnership for Women & Families
  • Annual childcare costs, or the average annual cost of full-time center-based childcare for children up to age 4.

You can read more about SmartAsset's methodology here.

The results showed a clear preference toward small towns and medium-size cities far from the East Coast: Three inland states — Utah, Texas, and Iowa — contained seven of the top 10 cities. SmartAsset said northeastern cities tended to be weighed down by high childcare and housing costs, and the highest-ranking northeastern city on the list, Newton, Massachusetts, didn't even crack the top 100.

Read on to see the 10 best cities for working parents.

A look inside Boston Marathon champion Des Linden's daily routine, which features 12-mile morning runs and 2 breakfasts

Des Linden Marathon run Boston

  • Boston Marathon champion Des Linden is the first American woman to win the event since 1985.
  • Linden told Business Insider about the daily routine she sticks to when she's training for a race.
  • The marathoner's average day revolves around long runs, but she leaves plenty of time for recovery too.

Boston Marathon champion Des Linden wasn't always drawn to her signature event.

"Actually, when I first started watching marathons, I was, like, 'That's insane. Crazy. I would never do that,'" Linden told Business Insider. "So it wasn't love at first sight by any means."

But when the professional runner joined the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project, she saw the transformative effect that training for the marathon had on her teammates.

"They just came out the other side as different people," she said.

Linden was sold. Since then, she's represented the US at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics. Linden made history in April by becoming the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985.

She told Business Insider that running marathons has taught her that she's capable of handling adversity.

"When we think we're down and out, there's still a little bit more," the runner said. "It's figuring out where the very bottom of your well is. And every time you're, like, 'Wow, that was a little more than I thought.' You can keep pushing that threshold. It's kind of the same lesson over and over, but it's just going a little further each time."

Here's a look at Linden's daily routine when she's training for a marathon:

DON'T MISS: US Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin just won gold in Pyeongchang — here's the grueling morning routine that helped her do it

When she's in training mode, Linden packs a ton of mileage into each day. She said that training for a marathon is "really teaching your body how to run when it's really fatigued."

Linden said she wakes up around 6 and starts off the day by reaching for the coffee.

She'll also eat a light breakfast — a bagel or a piece of toast with some peanut butter.

Kim Kardashian Kanye

It may seem like you were born knowing the term "Kimye," but Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have only been an official couple for about five years.

The pair, who started off as good friends, have certainly made it an eventful time though, so you'd be forgiven for forgetting a few things along the way.

We've rounded up the most crazy, heartbreaking, and touching moments from their time together.

2003-2006: Kanye and Kim met, and Kanye was smitten.

The pair met and became friends in 2003, but Kim was dating rapper Ray-J at the time.

It started out pretty platonic, but Kanye later revealed it was when he saw a picture of Kardashian with her friend Paris Hilton that he knew he loved her.

"I just knew I wanted her to be my girl for a long time,"he told Ryan Seacrest in 2013. "I remember I saw a picture of her and Paris Hilton, and I remember telling my boy, 'Have you seen that girl Kim Kar-dijon?'"

2008: Kanye featured Kim as Princess Leia in a comedy show.

Later, West recruited Kardashian for a hip-hop puppet show called "Alligator Boots."

Though the show never took off, you can see the future Mr. and Mrs. West playing a stormtrooper and Princess Leia in her slave outfit here. It's clear that they had chemistry from the start.

2009: Kanye did his first verse about Kim.

Kanye performed a verse on Keri Hilson's single "Knock You Down" with the lines "You were always the cheerleader of my dreams / Seem to only date the head of football teams / And I was the class clown that always kept you laughing / We were never meant to be, baby we just happened."

"You should leave your boyfriend now."

TMZ asserted that the verse was about Kim, and seeing as Kim was dating football player Reggie Bush at the time, it's not too hard to believe.

best toothpaste

The Insider Pick:

  • Nobody likes going to the dentist, but if you take good care of your teeth between visits, the cleaning will go easier. We researched and tested many kinds of toothpaste to find the best ones you can buy. Sensodyne's Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste is our top pick because it whitens gently while building up tooth enamel to lessen sensitivity.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is essential to good oral hygiene and long-lasting, healthy, white teeth. To get the most out of your daily brushing, you need the best toothpaste you can get. Most types of toothpaste are made to solve specific problems inside your mouth, including everything from eliminating sensitivity and rebuilding enamel to whitening teeth and freshening your breath.

Although some companies' claims sound dubious, many kinds of toothpaste actually work as advertised. When shopping, it's also a good idea to check out the American Dental Association's list of recommended toothpaste brands. After all, to get on the ADA's list, companies have to scientifically demonstrate the safety and efficacy levels of the toothpaste.

We've researched and tested many tubes of toothpaste to find the best ones you can buy. Whether you want an all-natural toothpaste, one with fluoride, one with charcoal, one with whitening powers, or one that rebuilds your enamel to reduce sensitivity, we have a toothpaste for you.

Read on in the slides below to check out all of our top picks for the best toothpaste you can buy.

The best toothpaste overall

Why you'll love it: Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste strengthens enamel, whitens teeth gently, and helps lessen sensitivity.

Even though the Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste is specifically designed for sensitive teeth and for teeth whitening, it’s a great all-around toothpaste that also works to prevent cavities, freshen breath, and strengthen tooth enamel.

Sensodyne Pronamel specifically works to strengthen the enamel on the teeth to protect against acid erosion. The toothpaste's formula uses teeth-strengthening minerals like calcium to restore your teeth and lessen sensitivity. As it strengthens your enamel, it also whitens gently.

The Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste won’t irritate gums or the lining of the mouth, either, because it doesn’t contain sodium laurel sulfates. Overall, it's a great toothpaste for people with sensitive teeth.

Our guides editor Malarie Gokey has been using this toothpaste daily for a few months now, and her teeth are much less sensitive. Hot drinks and frozen foods used to hurt her sensitive teeth, but now she doesn't feel that annoying tooth pain anymore. She's also noticed real progress with teeth whitening.

We're not the only ones who recommend this toothpaste. The Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste will help teeth look better and remain strong, according to Consumer SearchAuthority Dental says this whitening toothpaste works well for those with sensitive teeth, but some people won’t like the taste of it, as it has a hint of fluoride.

Buyers on Amazon are also very fond of this toothpaste. Amazon reviewer Marlene Kubota says it's perfect for cleaning sensitive teeth, especially when paired with an electric toothbrush.

The only complaints about this toothpaste are its unique light mint taste and the tube's construction. The cap is hard to twist off and sometimes the tube can rupture if you break into it from twisting too hard.

Pros: Provides all-around protection and benefits for teeth, especially good for those with sensitive teeth, helps build enamel back on teeth that’s eroded from acidic drinks and foods, freshens breath nicely

Cons: Build quality of tubes is questionable, some people won’t like the taste

The best toothpaste for kids

Why you'll love it: If your kids would rather do just about anything than brush their teeth, try Hello Oral Care's fruit-flavored toothpaste.

Fighting with little kids about brushing their teeth can be one of those battles you wish you could avoid. Then you remember that you’re the parent, so you have to instruct your child in the wisdom of taking care of his or her teeth.

So rather than fighting over brushing time, consider a different type of toothpaste that has flavors kids like better than traditional minty toothpastes. Hello Oral Care's toothpaste comes in plenty of flavors kids like, so they’ll be more willing — dare we hope for eager? — to brush their teeth.

Both the fluoride and fluoride-free toothpastes are available in bubble gum, blue raspberry, watermelon, and organic apple flavors. The flavors taste so good that you may even be tempted to borrow your kid's toothpaste. Just make sure your young ones don't swallow the yummy toothpaste or they could end up with a stomach ache.

The Creative Kitchen says kids will be more likely to brush when they should, after breakfast and before bed, because of the great taste of the Hello Oral Care Fluoride ToothpasteAmazon reviewer Jocelyn Maas agrees, saying the watermelon flavor of the toothpaste eliminated fighting and tears when it was time to brush her son’s teeth.

If you’re concerned about giving your children toothpaste with unhealthy ingredients, you can count on the Hello brand to deliver a toothpaste without dyes or preservatives, writes Born Cute. Even the toothpaste boxes are eco-friendly, consisting of 100% recycled paperboard with soy ink printing.

However, the consistency of the Hello Oral Care toothpaste can lead to quite a mess if kids are not careful, according to Amazon reviewer KJ Petersen. The toothpaste is not as solid as some others, meaning it can run down the side of the tube and onto the bathroom counter.

Pros: Flavors of toothpaste will appeal to children, kids who like the taste tend to fight less about brushing their teeth, toothpaste is free of dyes and preservatives, offered in both a fluoride and fluoride-free version

Cons: Consistency of this toothpaste can lead to messes in the bathroom, kids may have a stomach ache if they swallow the toothpaste

The best toothpaste for fresh breath

Why you'll love it: The Colgate Total Advanced Fresh Toothpaste gives you amazingly fresh breath while cleaning your teeth.

Sure, we all know it’s important to brush our teeth to keep them as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Removing plaque and other substances that can damage teeth is important, but we also brush our teeth to freshen our breath. When you want the freshest breath possible after brushing your teeth, Colgate Total Advanced Fresh Toothpaste is the tube you should reach for.

Colgate's toothpaste will make morning breath a distant memory, but it also fights cavities, gingivitis, and other nasty germs that cause bad breath and other complications. The toothpaste is ADA approved, so these claims are actually validated to some extent with scientific testing.

Colgate claims that this toothpaste will keep your breath fresh for 12 hours because it continues to fight the germs that cause bad breath after brushing. Amazon reviewer Momma J Beans agrees that fresh breath lasts much longer with this toothpaste, and she has been a loyal customer ever since trying this toothpaste.

Another reviewer named Jo Vakarian says the Colgate toothpaste delivers a lasting level of freshness and it whitens teeth.

However, a few Amazon reviewers, including Matty P, say they experienced a burning or numbing sensation after using this Colgate toothpaste.

Pros: Will give you fresh breath for a long time during the day, also able to whiten teeth adequately, has all of the ingredients you’d expect to keep your teeth clean while freshening your breath, most people like the gel texture and minty flavor

Cons: Some users report a burning or numbing sensation with this product, contains triclosan, which some people dislike

What to say to a friend who had a miscarriage that will actually comfort them

Woman Crying Sad

  • Miscarriage is a very difficult subject for many women to talk about and not every single person grieves in the same way.
  • Don't belittle someone's pain or try to minimize the issue.
  • Don't ask for details or say that you know what someone is going through.
  • Try to offer help in more concrete ways such as cooking or taking someone to the doctor.

Miscarriages are a surprisingly common occurrence.

According to Alyssa Dweck, a gynecologist based in New York, one in five women will have a miscarriage in their first trimester.

Fortunately, Dweck says that most times, miscarriages are due to a chromosomal or genetic abnormality, and therefore are a random and not recurrent event.

Still, it can be hard to know what to say to someone who has been through a miscarriage. INSIDER spoke to both a psychologist and a mother who has been through a miscarriage to find out the most appropriate ways to console someone.

Full disclosure: My mother had a miscarriage before I was born, so I spoke to her for this article.

Don't try to minimize someone's pain.

According to media psychologist Dr. Pamela Rutledge, it's critical to acknowledge the pain that comes with having a miscarriage, rather than trying to gloss over it.

"The key is support, not belittlement or minimizing of her pain," Rutledge told INSIDER.

"I'm so sorry,""I'm here if you need anything," (if you actually know them well) or "my thoughts and love are with you" are all appropriate things to say, according to Rutledge.

Avoid saying things like "oh well, you can always have another,""you're lucky, kids are a drag,""you'll get over this in time," or even "it's God's will."

Rutledge said no one wants to be told to "buck up." In fact, women want to share the experience and deal with the sorrow now, not at a later moment.

Respect other's privacy.

Rutledge emphasizes the importance of respecting someone's privacy — both when you find out about their miscarriage in person and on social media.

"Do not ask for details," Rutledge said. "Trust that people will share what they want you to know.  Social media sites like Facebook are public forums, not private conversations — even if you have privacy settings."

"But even in private, respect the woman's privacy," Rutledge told INSIDER. "Just like on social media, if she wants to talk, she will. If she doesn't, don't ask for more. Use empathy for others and do not indulge your own curiosity or anxiety. This is about the woman who suffered a loss, not you."

Show them that they're loved.

Rutledge told INSIDER that many of those who go through a miscarriage end up taking the blame for the loss. She said it's critical for these people to know that their friends and family are still there for them despite what happened.

"People want their pain validated and, especially in times of profound loss, to know that they still have love and support," Rutledge said. "This is especially important for women who somehow feel it is their 'fault' or some personal shortcoming that caused the miscarriage."

Westworld season 2

Critics love season two of "Westworld," with many saying it's even better than the first, which premiered in 2016 on HBO.

The second season currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and premieres its first episode on HBO Sunday.

The first season was a hit with critics and audiences, but it ended on a somewhat disappointing note because a lot of people predicted where all the storylines would end up.

But critics at outlets including Business Insider have given season two glowing reviews because it expertly expands the world into more parks than just Westworld, and increases the stakes for all of its characters, both human and host.

Here's what critics are saying about season two of "Westworld" (HBO made the season's first five episodes available to the press).

SEE ALSO: 'Westworld' season 2 is even better than the first and transcends the last sci-fi tropes holding it back

"A bigger, bolder, and bloodier season that improves on season 1 in nearly every possible way."

Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm

"With a thrilling sense of possibility and a fleetness in telling multiple stories, the new season's first five episodes grow exponentially in appeal."

Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter

"The second season feels less like a freewheeling experiment and more like a TV show that knows what it's doing and where it's going."
