Google's biggest event of the year kicks off on Tuesday — here's what to expect (GOOG, GOOGL)

Virtual Reality Google DayDream

Google I/O is kicking off on May 8 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA — right on the doorstep of the world-famous Googleplex. We're expect to hear much more about what Google has in store for the next year.

The event is mostly geared towards Google's message to developers. But we still get lots of hints as to the future of Android phones, Google Home smart speakers, and the Google search engine itself.

As usual, we expect to hear about upcoming changes coming to Android with the next version, codenamed Android P. We might also see the introduction of a spinoff version of Android that's designed to run on home appliances and other types of machines.

And above all else, we'll surely hear about the future of Google's big bet on artificial intelligence, which underpins pretty much everything else.

Check out what to expect at Google I/O 2018:

SEE ALSO: Programmers are having a huge debate over whether they should be required to behave respectfully to each other

Android P will support the notch.

An early version of Android P has been out to developers for a little while now, so we already have a good idea of what to expect.

For instance, Google will almost definitely give us an idea of what to expect with the forthcoming version of Android, codenamed Android P.

So far, the one thing we know about Android P is that Google is adding support for the "notch," as popularized by the iPhone X.

When a phone has an edge-to-edge screen, the notch is where the selfie camera and various other sensors have to live.

Phones like the iPhone X, Essential Phone, and LG G7 all have notches, as well as a variety of Android devices from Chinese phone makers. Getting official support for the notch from Google should make it easier for app developers to adjust their apps to work with the notch seamlessly.

Android P will get new gestures to replace the standard control buttons.

Google accidentally revealed in its Android developers blog that it will remove the traditional navigation buttons at the bottom of smartphones. Those button include the home button, the universal back button, and the app multitasking button.

Based on the blog post, a simple pill-shaped home button will replace the traditional navigation buttons. We'll be using swipe gestures to go to the home screen, use the universal back button, and bring up the app multitasking menu.

Google took down the images of the new navigation in its blog, which suggests the company wasn't ready to show people about the change at the time of the blog's release. Google may be ready to elaborate on the new style of navigation during Google I/O.

Overall, Android P will give Android a cool new look.

Android P is giving many parts of the decade-old operating system a fresh new look, which Google is likely to show off.

Things like the settings menu, quick menu in the notifications shade, and the volume slider are getting a refreshed design. Even the clock is moving from the top right of the screen to the top left. Google will likely explain its rationale on Tuesday.

You can check out Marques Brownlee's video on some of the design changes coming to Android "P."

The 17 most iconic boardwalks in the US everyone should visit in their lifetime

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

The warmer weather has many of us thinking about summer vacations. America's beaches, with their charming boardwalks, are perfect for a quick getaway.

From Coney Island in Brooklyn, where you can ride the historic Cyclone roller coaster, to the boardwalk at Maine's Old Orchard Beach, known for hosting big band acts like Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, there are a plethora of beachfront destinations to choose from.

Scroll down to read about 17 of the most iconic boardwalks in the US.

Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, began as a private resort in the 1820s. The beach wasn't opened to the public until 1923.

The Cyclone, a historic wooden roller coaster that has been thrilling visitors since it debuted in 1927, and Nathan's Famous hot dogs are just several things that make Brooklyn's Coney Island boardwalk iconic.

Between 1880 and World War II, Coney Island — which began as a resort destination in the 1820s — boasted the largest amusement area in the US. Coney's popularity boomed in the 1920s, when the New York City subway system connected Brooklyn and Manhattan. Back then, subway fare was only five cents, earning Coney Island the nickname "nickel empire." The beach was opened to the public in 1923.

In its heyday, Coney featured three distinct amusement parks: Luna Park (which was revitalized in 2010), Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park.

Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California, opened in 1916 as Looff's Pleasure Pier, named for amusement park entrepreneur Charles Looff.

Santa Monica's boardwalk, known for being the symbolic endpoint of Route 66, began as a tale of two piers.

In 1909, the Santa Monica Municipal Pier opened to the public. A popular destination for swimmers and strollers, it inspired an adjacent pleasure pier, opened in 1916 by amusement park entrepreneur Charles Looff

Today, Santa Monica Pier is home to Pacific Park, which features a roller coaster and Ferris wheel.

The first boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was built in 1870 to prevent sand from encroaching on upscale beachfront hotels.

Although it's famous for its casinos, Atlantic City's boardwalk — which was originally built in the 19th century to keep sand from encroaching on the upscale beachfront hotels — is an attraction in its own right. The initial boardwalk, installed in 1870, cost $5,000 to make. Through the years, wear and tear from tourists and damage from storms necessitated replacements.

Home to the Steel Pier amusement area, which juts 1,000 feet into the ocean, the AC boardwalk is perhaps most famous for hosting the Miss America pageant, an event held annually since 1921

28 celebrities who knew each other in high school

Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg

For many of us, reading about celebrity friendships is a huge form of entertainment. Poring over famous strangers' inside jokes or friendly banter gives us some small insight into their private lives that feels both relatable and far-fetched all at the same time.

While it's easy enough to imagine celebrities meeting at an awards show, it's even more fascinating to picture them partnering up in a chemistry lab, backpacks in tow, faces riddled with acne.

These 28 celebrities knew each other in high school, long before they started making headlines.

Ansel Elgort and Timothee Chalamet played on the same basketball team.

That's right, these two award show darlings (and certified heartthrobs) actually attended high school together. Moreover, they went to New York City's LaGuardia High School, which might mean something to you if you've ever watched "Fame."

"They were both quite popular and very different," their former drama teacher, Mr. Schifman, told Vanity Fair in 2018. According to Elgort, the two also played on the same basketball team.

B.J. Novak cast John Krasinski in his senior play, and the two played Little League together.

Ryan and Jim might never have clicked on "The Office," but Novak and Krasinski go way back — all the way back to Little League.

"[B.J.] was the home-run king of Little League, did he tell you that?" Krasinski told Boston.com in 2005. "There's a large oak tree in the Newton Centre park playground that is legendary because only a few humans have hit it with a baseball from home plate, and B.J. Novak is among them. And I was there that day."

The on-screen office workers also attended Newton South High School the same year, and Krasinski even appeared in Novak's senior play.

Scarlett Johansson and Jack Antonoff dated and went to prom together.

Not only did ScarJo and Jack Antonoff go to the same high school, but they also dated and even went to prom together. All of this happened back in 2001 at the Professional Children's School on the Upper West Side.

5 things you should consider before starting a new diet

Woman Eating Watermelon

It seems like there is a "new diet" in the news every week. And no matter how much research you do on a trendy diet, dietitians told INSIDER that most people still forget to keep a few crucial factors in mind — and that's one of the reasons why their diets fail.

For the best experience, consider these tips before starting a new diet or eating plan.

Know that extreme dieting can affect your mental health.

People underestimate the negative influence that overly-restrictive dieting can have on their mental state, Registered Dietitian Alyssa Ardolino, Nutrition Communications at IFIC told INSIDER.

"What might start as an innocent attempt to lose weight can become isolating or obsessive," she explained. "Which is why engaging in dieting [sic] behaviors also increase the risk of eating pathology such as bingeing or purging."

Research from the National Eating Disorders Association also found that the most important predictor of developing an eating disorder is dieting. In one large study cited on their site, those who dieted moderately were five times more likely to develop an eating disorder — those who practiced extreme restriction were eighteen times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who didn't diet.

Consider making other lifestyle changes instead of just slashing calories or trying a new fad diet program.

Registered dietitian nutritionistMalina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told INSIDER that she doesn't counsel people to go on diets. Instead, she focuses on the overall journey toward a healthier nutrition lifestyle.

"I spend a lot of time teaching and reinforcing practical skills that build a healthier nutrition environment," she said. "These skills include meal planning, grocery shopping, redoing the contents of a person's refrigerator and pantry, recipe makeovers and controlling your surroundings."

Making similar changes will go farther than just cutting calories or adhering to a new fad diet. Ardolino agreed that changing some behaviors to improve your overall health is a great strategy. She recommended a few different techniques including, adding more fruits and vegetables to your eating plans instead of removing something, going for daily walks or prioritizing "me time," and even making a list of things you appreciate about your body.

Determine your specific goals with this diet.

If your goal is to change your eating habits for the long-term and lose weight, strict dieting might not be your best option, according to Malkani.

"The most important thing to consider before starting a new diet is that diets don't work," she said. "Unless the dietary changes you're making are lifestyle changes, you may experience short-term weight loss, but weight regain is likely, and weight regain to an even higher weight than you started with is [also] likely if you are not physically active."

Ardolino agreed and noted that following very specific eating regimens can provide a false sense of control, but any hyper-calculated and over-analyzed technique won't promote long-term health or changes.

Fast Food Signature Burgers 6

McDonald's and Wendy's have a beef over fresh beef.

On Monday, McDonald's announced it had completed its rollout of fresh beef Quarter Pounders across the US.

Wendy's, long the fast-food king of fresh-beef burgers, fired back at its rival soon after McDonald's announced its plans to debut fresh beef, posting a string of tweets highlighting the fact that McDonald's didn't say it planned to switch to fresh beef for all its burgers.

Kurt Kane, Wendy's head of concept and marketing, told Business Insider that "you shouldn't have to use a decoder ring to figure out what quality you're going to get" when you order a burger.

Kane also said that having tried one of McDonald's new burgers, he wasn't worried about Wendy's customers ditching the chain for McDonald's new Quarter Pounders.

So we decided to conduct a taste test of our own.

Here's how McDonald's fresh-beef Quarter Pounder matches up against Wendy's Dave's Single, made with fresh — never frozen — beef.

SEE ALSO: Wendy's slams McDonald's as a new weapon emerges in the fast-food burger battles

Up first: McDonald's. I was able to try the new fast-food burger during a media event — and I was impressed by what I found.

"Those who are seeking a larger burger ... this is what they were looking for," Linda VanGosen, McDonald's vice president of menu innovation, told Business Insider.

"It was hotter, juicier, more flavorful," VanGosen said. "This is addressing what they're looking for."

The only change in the burger, according to executives, is the fresh beef. Everything else is exactly the same.

McDonald's says its beef prep simply requires slapping the patty on the grill and adding a bit of pepper.

One advantage of fresh beef is that it cooks faster than frozen beef, meaning the new preparation style isn't likely to slow down McDonald's workers.

Taking a bite, I immediately noticed the difference that fresh beef makes. Hotter, juicier, and finally freed of its mulch-like texture, the fresh-beef burger is a vast improvement over the old-school Quarter Pounder.

I hadn't realized how much of a handicap the texture of McDonald's patties was to the chain's hamburgers until I had a fresh-beef burger.

While the dryness of the burgers can be ignored on a Big Mac as other elements take the forefront, the Quarter Pounder is improved vastly by the beef upgrade.

5 etiquette rules Meghan Markle has to follow as an American joining the royal family

$

meghan markle

  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's royal wedding is May 19.
  • Once she becomes a royal, she'll have to follow etiquette rules like curtsying to higher-ranking royals, holding a teacup properly, and sitting with a "duchess slant."

The royal family is known for doing things differently than the rest of society, preserving traditions that have faded out of style among commoners.

"There has to be a slight differentiation between the royal family and us regular folk," royal expert Victoria Arbiter previously told INSIDER. "Not in an arrogant way, but what's the point in the royal family if they are just like us?"

Meghan Markle, an American actress, will join the royal ranks when she marries Prince Harry on May 19, and she'll have to change some of her American habits.

Here are five etiquette rules that Markle will have to follow when she joins the royal family.

Markle will have to curtsy to all higher-ranking royals.

There's an Order of Precedence that dictates who must bow or curtsy to whom in the royal family. For example, the queen's children and grandchildren bow or curtsy if they're seeing her for the first time that day.

There's also a distinction between people who are born into the royal family and people who marry into it.

When Kate Middleton married Prince William, the queen updated the Order of Precedence and dictated that Middleton should curtsy to "blood princesses"— Princesses Anne, Alexandra, Beatrice, and Eugenie, according to The Telegraph. Because they were born into the royal family and Middleton married into it, they outrank her.

There's one exception: If Prince William is present, that elevates Middleton's ranking and reverses the order, requiring the "blood princesses" to curtsy to her.

These rules will likely apply to Markle, as well. Since's she's marrying into the royal family, she would curtsy to princesses born into it unless she is with Prince Harry, in which case they would curtsy to her.

She will have to refrain from going in for hugs.

While Americans often go in for a hug as a greeting, British royals initiate handshakes with members of the public — if any contact at all.

When greeting other royals, though, they kiss each other's cheeks since their families are old friends and they're all on a level playing field as royals.

Markle has been breaking this protocol and giving hugs while out on royal engagements, but royals have been known to break their own protocol from time to time.

She'll have to master the "duchess slant" when she sits.

The term "duchess slant" was coined by Beaumont Etiquette to describe the way Kate Middleton sits with her knees and ankles together slanted to one side. It's a posture that Markle is already mastering.

"Typically the 'duchess slant' is used when a lady has to sit for an extended amount of time while keeping poise and posture," royal expert Myka Meier of Beaumont Etiquette previously told INSIDER. "It is the perfect pose for when a camera is shooting directly in front of you because by slightly slanting the knees to create a zig-zag effect when wearing a dress or skirt, your legs are angled so that the camera — or in this case a crowd — only sees and shoots the sides of your legs and protects your modesty."

The 25 worst summer movies to ever come out

$

amazing spiderman 2

The more a film is over-hyped, the more of a chance it has to underwhelm — and nothing underwhelms fans more often than the concept of a Summer blockbuster. These large, loud, and action-packed films are built to raise the energy of their audiences like any roller coaster or high-intensity experience.

The largest movies of the year usually arrive during the Summer, with the term "blockbuster" rising ever since the production of franchise films increased in the 1980's. While Christmas season usually has more "feel good" films revolving around the holiday spirit, Summer blockbusters tend to include more larger-than-life fantasy action flicks, and if there's anything that rings true about these kinds of over-saturated franchise films, it's that they don't always live up to the hype.

Full of horrible premises and even more awful sequels, we've rounded up the worst Summer blockbusters of all time and ranked them based on their critical scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the movie reviews aggregator, as well as any discrepancies in audience scoring.

Below you'll find the top 25 worst summer blockbusters, ranked from horrible to possibly the worst films ever made:

25."Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace" (1999)

Critic Score: 55%, Audience: 59%Possibly the worst film in the "Star Wars" franchise, it kicked off the highly anticipated prequel trilogy with a story built on politics and and characters with the most annoying voices yet. "What I can't comprehend is why the political details had to be so tedious and abstract," wrote the Wall Street Journal, "will the kids of our nation and the world truly be titillated by trade wars and the spectacle of a do-nothing Senate?"

24. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014)

Critic Score: 52%, Audience: 64%

After the failure that was "Spider-Man 3," the too-quickly rebooted franchise seemed to learn nothing from its predecessor and continued to pack their sequel full of villains. The Atlantic called it "over-stuffed with plot," as the film "struggles to invest the audience in any of it since there's so much to get through and so many future films and spin-offs to set up."

Ironically enough, "Spider-Man" was rebooted a third time when it joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and none of the Andrew Garfield sequels were ever put into production.

23. "Waterworld" (1995)

Critic Score: 42%, Audience 43%

One of the oddest plots on this list, "Waterworld" starred Kevin Costner as lead actor, producer, and director, in a film where a half man-half fish creature called "The Drifter" commands a search for land on a planet covered by water.

There was so much drama and fighting during the $175 million dollar production process (making a film entirely on water isn't easy), that original director Kevin Reynolds left during post-production stating that, "in future Costner should direct all his own movies. That way he can work with his favorite director and his favorite actor."

Americans received a record-breaking 3.4 billion robocalls last month — here are some ways to stop them

$
0
0

In April alone, Americans received an estimated 3.4 billion scam calls from automated machines — more than any month on record, according to The New York Times.

The spike didn't come out of nowhere. That number was about 2.5 billion in the same month last year, and consumer advocates worry that the number will only continue to increase now that the FCC has removed an Obama-era definition of auto-dialers that the agency thought was too broad.

Federal agencies are taking action, holding robocallers accountable and searching for new ways to regulate as robocallers continue to become more sophisticated with their tactics. Policies are in the works to address "neighborhood spoofing," which is the extremely effective tactic used by robocallers to make the calls look like they're coming from your own area code so that recipients are more willing to answer. So far, no policy has been successful in preventing those.

Even when consumers don't fall for the scam and share personal information, being inundated with robocalls can be a liability: there's no way to know when the unknown number dialing you is a time-wasting scam or a real-life emergency. So while lawmakers and regulators work to figure out the best way to subside the number of outgoing scam calls, agencies and companies have come up with solutions to block the ones that get through.

It's nearly impossible to be 100% robocall-free, so adopt a few (if not all) of these tactics to see results:

Add your name to the FTC's "Do not call" registry, and report the calls you get anyway.

Registration for the service began in 2003 and sign-ups don't expire, yet the FTC reported receiving 4. 5 million complaints in 2017, at "an average of more than 375,000 robocall complaints per month," compared to 2013's 2.18 million.

It it isn't completely effective, but the people who signed up probably get fewer calls than they would have if they hadn't.

Use your phone's Do Not Disturb mode so that you only get calls from people in your contact list.

This way you don't have to see the calls come through or have to ignore them. Keep in mind this strategy won't work for any professional hoping to hear from new clients or those who receive regular calls from unknown numbers are part of their job, but it's a great option if you have a separate, non-work phone.

If you don't want to block all new numbers, block them as they come by going into the callers' contact information in your phone.

This is especially helpful if there are a few numbers you get calls from frequently. If you choose the route of answering unknown numbers instead of waiting for a voicemail, keep a couple of things in mind:

Don't engage by speaking OR by pressing a number even to be taken off a list, according to the FTC: "Doing so will probably lead to more unwanted calls. Instead, hang up and file a complaint with the FTC."

Train yourself to answer questions by repeating them instead of saying "yes," because that can be used as a vocal signature to make unauthorized credit card charges. For example, the answer to "Can you hear me?" should be "I can hear you," instead of "Yes."

$30,000 tickets, $2 million jewelry, and $2,000 tuxedos: Unbelievable facts show how opulent the Met Gala is

rihanna metgala2018

  • The Met Gala 2018 theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."
  • It reportedly costs $30,000 for a ticket to attend the Met Gala.
  • However, that's just the beginning of all the costs associated with the $3.5 million event.

The first Monday in May hosts the party of the year in the fashion world.

Dubbed the Oscars of the East, the annual Met Gala was held on May 7, themed "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newest exhibition at the Costume Institute.

With 180 pieces on display, featuring high-end, expensive designers from Versace and Valentino to Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel, the exhibition focuses on the "dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art."

Helmed by Vogue's Anna Wintour (and co-chaired this year by Rihanna, Donatella Versace, and Amal Clooney), the Met Gala is known for its best-dressed and worst-dressed celebrities, socialites, and businesspeople who walk the red carpet in their interpretation of the theme.

Anyone who is anyone is there, at least according to Wintour's handpicked and closely scrutinized guest list

And this year's guests didn't disappoint, from Rihanna's pope-inspired ensemble dripping in diamonds to Blake Lively walking the red carpet in $2 million worth of jewelry.

The cost to make an appearance during fashion's biggest night out is a steep one, and the cost to make the event happen is even bigger. For $30,000 a ticket, those who passed Wintour's approval can attend the $3.5 million event.

And that's just the beginning of all the money that goes into — and comes out of — what André Leon Talley refers to as "the Super Bowl of fashion."

Take an inside look at the money behind the Met Gala.

Tickets for the Met Gala reportedly cost $30,000 — that's enough to put a family of four over the poverty line. Some sources say tickets can even cost up to $50,000.

May is the month of flowers and many, many graduations.

As nervous but excited young adults approach a new chapter of their lives, family and friends inevitably find themselves shopping around for a gift — big or small — that shows their love for the graduate or makes their post-graduation life a little easier.

Depending on how close you are, you might not need to buy a lavish gift. A new car with a large red bow would, rightfully, be considered a little overkill. Regardless of the motivation, below is a list of 20 great gifts you can get your graduate for under $50.

What the FDA-recommended daily intake of 2,000 calories looks like at every major fast-food chain

2000 Calories 4

  • Chain restaurants in America are now required to post calorie counts on their menus.
  • The FDA suggests eating roughly 2,000 calories a day to sustain energy.
  • Americans tend to consume much more than that on average, and many think processed foods, sugars, and fats that are often present in fast-food is to blame.
  • We grabbed some pretty ordinary meals from major fast-food chains that add up to at least 2,000 calories — and it's pretty surprising how little it takes to reach it.

As of Monday, chain restaurants are now required to post calorie amounts on menus, per a requirement of the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends an average daily intake of 2,000 calories.

Yet according to data from The Food and Agriculture Organization of the Unit red Nations (FAOSTAT), Americans eat about 3,600 calories daily — a 24% increase from 1961. Healthier, more transparent practices are making their way into the fast-food industry, yet simple awareness isn't always effective.

The Upshot took pictures of 2,000 calories' worth of restaurant food in 2014. We decided to do our own version and visit 13 fast-food chains to discover what ordering 2,000 calories looks like.

While many of these arrangements look like single meals, each would be all you are recommended to eat in an entire day.

Marina Nazario contributed reporting on a previous version of this article.

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski at the Met Gala 2018

The 2018 Met Gala was a well-dressed, star-studded event. During the annual gala, which serves as a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, actors, musicians, and models walked the red carpet wearing the most extravagant attire. (We're talking a Pope-inspired gown dripping in diamonds and ornate headpieces depicting the Nativity scene.)

The only thing better than seeing one of Hollywood's hottest stars at the event is seeing a celebrity couple walk the red carpet in jaw-dropping, coordinated attire. There were even some platonic pairs whose outfits stole the show.

Here are the best dressed celebrity couples from the 2018 Met Gala.

Met Gala co-host Amal Clooney and husband George Clooney were the first to arrive.

Amal wore a stunning floral top-and-train combo with dark navy pants, while George wore a simple black tux.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse made their Met Gala debut.

Reinhart wore a short but chic silver dress, while Sprouse, who used to intern at the Met, wore a tuxedo with a knee-length overcoat.

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski were truly stunning.

Seyfried's golden yellow gown was a tribute to the flag of Vatican City.

People get tattoos in honor of family members and hobbies and the same goes for celebrities. But some will get extra ink to commemorate a project they hold near and dear to their hearts.

From "Game of Thrones" actresses to Selena Gomez, some of the stars show off their movie and TV tattoos loud and proud, while others get their reminders in more discreet locations as a personal reminder of a big event in their lives.

Keep reading to see what TV and movie casts got inked together to remember their time together on set.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul both got inked in honor of the “Breaking Bad” series’ finale.

Cranston told TheWrap both he and costar Aaron Paul decided to get tattoos on the last day of filming the hit AMC show. Cranston has the show's "Br, Ba" logo etched on the inside of his ring finger on his right hand.

"Someone said, 'Well if you put it there, no one can see it,'" Cranston told E!"I said, 'I can see it.' So every once in a while I catch a glimpse of it, and I see that logo for 'Breaking Bad' and it just makes me smile.'"

Paul, meanwhile, got the phrase "no half measures" tattooed on his bicep. The line is from the season three episode, "Half Measures."

Five of the original "Avengers" cast members got matching ink to celebrate the premiere of "Infinity War."

Robert Downey Jr. and four of the original "Avengers" actors all have a matching letter "A." When turned on its side, you can see the number four, for the fourth "Avengers" movie coming in 2019.

According to Downey Jr., the tattoos were Scarlett Johansson's idea. The only original member who opted out of the ink was Mark Ruffalo. In his place, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Downey Jr., and Johansson all gave tattoo artist Joshua Lord the same ink.

"13 Reasons Why" executive producer Selena Gomez and the show’s cast members got matching semicolon tattoos.

The singer got matching semicolon tattoos with the show's stars Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman, who play Jessica and Ryan, respectively, in April.

The semicolons are a symbol of new beginnings, made popular by suicide prevention organization Project Semicolon.

My wife and I were in a long-distance relationship for 3 years before we got married — here's how we made it work

long distance relationship couple

  • Long-distance relationships aren't for everyone, writes author Steven John, who spent the first three years of his relationship with his now-wife living in a different state.
  • He notes that long-distance relationships aren't for everyone, but there are ways to make things run more smoothly.
  • Communication and planning for a future where you'll be physically together are key.

My wife and I never spent more than two weeks of uninterrupted time together before we got married.

We met when I was visiting LA on a break from college and she had recently moved to the area. She and I spent every possible moment together until I had to head back to school on the East Coast and we officially began a long-distance relationship.

As months turned into years, we constantly traveled back and forth between coasts, cities, and countries to see each other. Then we got married and now we’re expecting our second kid!

The point is that for the first three and some years of what has now been a 16-year relationship, we lived far apart, and often quite far at that, but we made it work.

Here's how we did it:

SEE ALSO: 9 things I wish I knew before I got married

We put an emphasis on good communication

While living apart, in any given week my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I spent a lot of time talking on the phone. This involved planned calls during which we knew we would both be available and distraction free as well as quick calls to ask a little question, tell a stupid joke, or just say something sweet.

In any relationship, communication is key. In a long-distance relationship especially, all you and your partner have when it comes to communicating are your actual words. I recommend only saying what you really mean and verbalizing everything you want your partner to know. Little rifts or confusions that could be patched with a kiss or a hand laid on an arm can grow needlessly in long-distance relationships, and they take much more time and effort to heal from afar.

We didn't waste any time when we were physically together

When I visited my girlfriend after weeks or even months of being apart, we didn’t go on bar crawls, go to concerts, schedule ski trips, or whatever else people do when friends are visiting. We spent our time working on our romantic relationship. I'm not just talking about sex; romance, cuddling, and intimacy are all just as vital to a healthy relationship. We took advantage of being together whenever we had the chance.

At the very least, we found it's good to make sure you and your partner can enjoy each other in total comfort when you finally see each other. Whether a relationship is long distance or involves a shared bed, bathroom, and Netflix queue, the same components have to be in place for it to work — communication, patience, affection, and trust.

We kept a close eye on our travel expenses

While we were in college, my wife and I knew we would always be near enough to drive to each other around the holidays and summer vacations at home since we grew up in New York and Washington, DC, respectively. We always planned car trips during these periods, but during the gaps when we were at school or traveling, we would trawl the web for cheap flights.

Travel isn't cheap these days, and that's especially true if you and your partner live far enough apart that flights are the only logical way to meet up. As often as possible, we planned our visits in advance and were flexible with the dates. We even set up flight alerts for low-cost travel options in hopes of finding reasonable flights. Just because you and your SO are deeply in love and committed and such, doesn't mean you need to spend a small fortune to be together.

How I cook a healthy and delicious dinner for 4 every night for $300 a month

$

grocery shopping

  • You can cook healthy, delicious meals for $300 a month with careful planning.
  • Determine which stores offer the best value for certain foods and shop accordingly.
  • Experiment with flavorful — but cost-effective — cooking methods, such as adding spices and seasoning.

I love to cook. I like to think that I've gotten pretty good at it over the past decade-plus, during which my wife and I have primarily dined in. Whether whipping up a quick pasta dish for the family or grilling burgers, brats, and steaks for a backyard full of friends, I enjoy pretty much every aspect of meal planning, prep, and execution.

What no one likes, however, is spending hundreds of dollars a month on groceries, especially when a good portion of our food invariably ends up in the trash. (The National Resource Defense Council estimates the average American household spends $2,200 per year on wasted food.)

It's no easy feat to routinely prepare a variety of nutritious, flavorful meals while staying within a reasonable food budget. But with an hour or so each month devoted to planning your meals ahead of time and with a keen eye for the best prices for necessary ingredients, you can prepare a healthy, tasty dinner for four every night of the month for only about $300.

Before I dive into the details, let me say that in fact I usually cook for three people: my wife, my son, and myself. But we often have a friend or in-law (or two or three in-laws) join us for meals, and we're about to add another nuclear family member in the form of a daughter, so soon enough it will be four at all times anyway.

SEE ALSO: I quit all non-essential spending for a month, and it taught me a powerful lesson

Where you shop matters

You can pay three different prices at three different places for the exact same food. Spend the time to figure out which vendors have the best prices for your regular purchases.

If you're lucky enough to live in an area with a plethora of food vendors, you can start saving yourself dozens of dollars each month without changing the things you eat simply by shopping around. When my wife and I were first married, we used to spend a good portion of our Saturdays shopping for groceries, both because we actually enjoy food shopping and because we had the lay of the land down pat in terms of pricing. Also we didn't have kids yet, so free time was actually a thing.

Our local Trader Joe's always had the best prices on pasta and beer. The Vons had great pricing on bagged salad and crackers. Whole Foods was our go-to for meats because we tend to go organic in that department. We hit the local farmer's market for produce and bread. And when in season, we hit our own backyard for tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

I estimate we saved an average of $40 per week just by taking the time to divide our grocery shopping among multiple vendors. It helped that all three of the stores mentioned above were in walking distance of our house and that when we drove the circuit to said stores and to the farmer's market we logged all of three miles, round trip. Your grocers and markets might not be so conveniently placed, so there a cost-benefit analysis to run regarding time and transit logistics/expenses (AKA gasoline or train fare).

Figure out when to buy in bulk and when to pick and choose

Buying foods in bulk is great as long as you're not wasting in bulk as a result. (Or forcing your family to eat the same foods seven nights a week!)

It only makes sense to buy certain foods in bulk. Dried staples like rice, pasta, flour, and other such foods keep for months without refrigeration and make ideal bulk purchases. When you see a great price on rice, stock up. Get the biggest bag of flour you can find. Keep the pantry full of pasta. And so forth.

On the other hand, some foods should be purchased with specific meals in mind. Leafy greens tend to wilt quickly and can't really be frozen, thus making them a poor choice for bulk buying. Don't worry about a great deal on a huge box of salad if you're likely going to toss most of it anyway; go for the bag that's half the price despite being a quarter of the quantity and you'll probably end up spending wisely.

Then there are a lot of foods that fall into an in-between category; they keep pretty well for days, but won't stay good for weeks. In this category we find many fruits and veggies, breads, dairy products, and more.

Some fruits freeze well for later use in smoothies or baked goods, so go ahead and get berries and bananas, for example, any time you see a good price or whenever your fruit supply runs low. Carrots, potatoes, and onions keep well but don't freeze well, so buy according to your meal plan, selecting as many as you need from loose bins, not buying in pre-weighed bags. Other vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower, taste fine when cooked from frozen, so go ahead and buy them from the frozen aisle and know they'll be ready when needed.

Most meat freezes well as long as you get the air out of the bag to avoid freezer burn. I'm not big on buying pre-frozen meat, largely because I get impatient while thawing, but this is often a good way to get good prices on your protein.

The long and short of it is you should buy as much food as you know you're going to eat based on your planned menus, and only stock up beyond that on things that can freeze or that keep for long periods without special storage.

Cook cheap foods in fancy ways

You can make a four-person serving of restaurant-quality mashed potatoes for about $4. Add baked chicken and roasted garlic broccoli and the meal goes up to a whopping $12, give or take.

Seriously, though, with $1.50 worth of potatoes, about $.25 worth of butter and sour cream, a 50-cent scoop of dried chives, and maybe a half-dollar's worth of milk, you'll have awesome mashed potatoes. (Leave a bit of the skin on the potatoes before mashing — this makes them feel fancier for some reason.)

Boneless, skinless chicken breast will cost you about $1.99 per pound if you shop well, so figure each diner gets an ample serving of roasted chicken and we're maybe up to ten bucks, likely still lower. And finally add half a bag of broccoli florets bought frozen and baked with a dusting of garlic powder (call that a quarter), we've arrived at $12 for a home-cooked meal that will nourish and satisfy. (Maybe add a few nickels more for a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar drizzled over the chicken)

This cheap food/fancy cooking paradigm works in almost countless ways. Boring old rice becomes exciting when you fry it with a bit of oil and toss in diced onion, peas, corn, and, chicken. A $2 box of pasta, a $4 jar of sauce, and a handful of shredded mozzarella makes a zesty baked ziti; add a bag of salad and you've got a fine, filling meal for about $11.

When you think of offices, you might imagine the drudgery of cubicle culture. But many companies are taking a more innovative approach to office design these days.

From rooftop gardens and reclaimed wood furniture to interestingly-named conference rooms and eye-catching art installations, workspaces around the US are as unique as the companies that occupy them.

Scroll down to read about 18 of the coolest offices in America.

The Spheres on Amazon's campus in Seattle, Washington, are three interconnected biodomes that contain more than 40,000 trees and plants.

Think of the Spheres as a greenhouse annex of Amazon's downtown Seattle campus. These three interconnected biodomes, designed by architectural firm NBBJ, are comprised of 620 tons of steel and 2,643 panes of glass. They house more than 40,000 flora from across the globe.

According to researchers, spending time in nature can increase creativity and boost productivity. The domes allow Amazon employees to recharge their minds in a natural setting without leaving the office.

Headquartered in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Acuity Insurance is known for its permanent 65-foot-tall Ferris wheel.

Acuity, a Wisconsin-based insurance company, is known for the 65-foot-tall Ferris wheel at its headquarters. A permanent installation, the ride has been nicknamed the "charity wheel" because it's the centerpiece of fundraising events.

Another impressive feature of Acuity's 1.2-million-square-foot campus is its 400-foot-tall flagpole, which flies an American flag that measures 140 feet by 70 feet.

Located in Emeryville, California, Pixar's campus — which was designed by Steve Jobs — boasts an industrial-chic atrium.

Pixar's campus was designed by the company's former CEO, Steve Jobs. It boasts gardens, tennis courts, and a swimming pool, and the building consists of 24 unique shades of brick, commissioned from a Washington kiln by Jobs himself.

The highlight of the interior is the industrial-chic atrium. Jobs advocated for the open-plan space, which would foster "chance meetings" among employees. The atrium houses the dining area, Café Luxo, named for Pixar's iconic lamp character, Luxo Jr. It's only open to employees and their guests, but those who have dined there rave about the daily specials and desserts.

Throughout the space, you'll find life-sized sculptures of some of the animation studio's beloved characters, such as LEGO likenesses of Woody and Buzz from "Toy Story" and effigies of the entire "Incredibles" family.
