We Spent More Than $100 For Pancakes And French Toast At A Wall Street Power Breakfast Spot

power breakfast

Sometimes, the only time to talk business is first thing in the morning, that's why the "power breakfast" is a time-honored tradition on Wall Street. And there are specific places where people do it.

The famous breakfast at the Loew's Regency Hotel is one of them. On Wednesday, Business Insider decided to check out another — The Garden at the Four Seasons Hotel in midtown Manhattan.

Wall Streeters have told us that it's one place where you can spot some big players and listen in on some serious conversations over eggs and bacon.

If the pictures don't convince you of that, the price tag will.

Just before 7:30 a.m. we walked down 57th Street right by The Solow Building, which houses private equity firms KKR, Apollo and Silver Lake and hedge funds Och-Ziff and Highbridge.

We continued to make our way down 57th toward our destination passing a bunch of high-end retail stores.

Here we are at 57 East 57th Street.

Warfighters of every thread, color, creed and flag have a few commonalities.

Combat is combat, after all, and in quiet moments troops joke around and take care of themselves and their equipment.

In the following you'll see sometimes an almost mirror image between two worlds that seem so far apart in the minds of many folks: the U.S. Marines and (often Jihadist) rebels in Syria.

Marines play darts in downtime ...

So do Syrian rebels, who also have a tendency to ...

united states dialect map language

Everyone knows that Americans don't exactly agree on pronunciations.

Regional accents are a major part of what makes American English so interesting as a dialect.

Joshua Katz, a Ph. D student in statistics at North Carolina State University, just published a group of awesome visualizations of Professor Bert Voux's linguistic survey that looked at how Americans pronounce words. (via) detsl on /r/Linguistics

His results were first published on Abstractthe N.C. State research blog.

Joshua gave us permission to publish some of the coolest maps from his collection.

The pronunciation of "caramel" starts disregarding vowels once you go west of the Ohio River

Residents of the far north have an oddly Canadian way of pronouncing "been"

For whatever reason, it's a "boo-wie" knife in Texas and D.C.*

UPDATE: Enthusiastic Marylanders have alerted us that there is indeed a town named "Bowie, Md." that is pronounced "Boo-wie." That solves that. No word yet from Texans.

UPDATE 2: From a Texan: "It's pronounced Boo-wie because it's named after Jim Bowie (pronounced Boo-wie), who played a major role in the Texas revolution. That explains why we're the only ones who pronounce it correctly."

Slogans are crucial for company marketing campaigns. But Reddit wanted to know, are slogans honest?

More than 16,000 Redditors suggested what brands' real slogans would be if they were actually being realistic.

For example, Denny's slogan might be "America's diner is always open," but Redditors thought a more accurate tagline is, "Because it's 2 am, you're drunk, and you need pancakes."

Here are our favorite Reddit selections.

Here's what Motel 6's slogan is in real life:

Reddit says it should be, "MOTEL 6: We'll leave the lights on for you, but there's not much that we can do about the smell."

GUYS: Here's How To Dress For Every Kind Of Wedding This Summer

$

tuxedo black tie suit

If it seems like all your friends are getting married this month, they probably are — June is the most popular month for weddings.

But dressing for summer weddings can be a challenge since not every type of suit is appropriate for every kind of wedding: You would never wear a tux to a beach wedding or a seersucker suit to a black tie affair.

Toby Bateman, the Buying Director at online menswear retailer MR PORTER,answered all of our summer wedding style questions. For more on how to dress for a summer wedding, you can also check out the wedding style section at MR PORTER.

From what to wear at the beach to deciding which tie is best, here is your definitive wedding style guide.

How To Dress For A City Wedding

City Wedding MR PORTER style guide

All items available through MR PORTER ($45-$985)

"For a city wedding, I tend to keep my suit choice fairly sober," Bateman says. "One that works as a summer business uniform in dark blue or a mid-grey wool, that I then freshen up a bit with shoes and accessories."

"The shirt should be classic in a crisp white or pale blue poplin and teamed with a smartly polished brown leather lace up shoe – oxford or derby, not a brogue."

"Add a fresh colored plain or neatly patterned tie and a pocket square, neatly folded or with a flourish, to complete the look," he said.

How To Dress For A Country Wedding

Country wedding MR PORTER style guide

All items available through MR PORTER ($85-$879)

"For the country, you can take this sensibility one step further – a pale grey or a pale blue suit would be totally acceptable," Bateman says. "If you’re likely to be standing on someone’s lawn drinking PIMMS, this is your chance to be a bit more liberal with the fabrication of the suit – cotton or linen works and is more softly structured than your business suit."

"They suits can be worn with either a plain shirt or one with a small scale pattern such as a small gingham or floral print," Bateman goes on. "If you have gone for a patterned shirt then you might want to leave the pocket square at home or choose a subtle option to avoid too many patterns from clashing."

"Shoes should be neutral but do not need to be as formal as the lace up worn for the city wedding, so a smart loafer works just as well."

How To Dress For A Beach Wedding

beach wedding MR PORTER style guide

All items available through MR PORTER ($80-$416)

"Surely if someone is getting married on the beach, anything goes?" Bateman jokes. "Bring out the linen or opt for an unlined suit for a more casual and comfortable option."

"You can also mix the jacket and trousers, ditch the tie, or even adopt a sandal for a more laid-back look."

Single vs. Double-Breasted Jackets

single versus double breasted suit MR PORTER

Both items available through MR PORTER (Left: $1,025, Right: $595)

"A single breasted jacket – one or two-button – is standard and typically the safest bet for weddings." Bateman says.

"The double-breasted jacket is also fine, but the thing about this style is that the fit is a bit more difficult to pull off.  It should be tailored short in the body and fitted well around the waist, so I would only recommend it for those well-versed about style and fit."

Choose The Right Tie

tie knot MR PORTER men's style

Ties available through MR PORTER ($140-$190)

"Establish the dress code first — a Windsor knot is best worn with a spread collar for more formal occasions," Bateman explains. "The four-in-hand [standard knot] is best for casual settings."

"Bow-ties don’t suit everyone and can sometime come off as cartoonish or a bit Pee Wee Herman, so I typically recommend them for a more formal wedding worn in black for a simple and sleek look."

Final Tips:

  • Get a tailor: An ill-fitting suit will ruin your look.
  • Follow the groom's example (and the invitation dress code): If the groom is wearing a tux but the invitation says casual, go for a suit. If he's wearing something more casual like a linen suit, then you should too.
  • Be bold with accessories: Pocket squares, ties, cuff links, tie clips, belts, and shoes can all make an outfit seem more interesting or original. It's the details that count!

The Restaurant Scene In Philadelphia Is Totally Underrated

Amada, Philadelphia

If I'd been asked about my expectations of Philadelphia's food scene before my first visit there, I probably would have confessed I didn't have any: I'd heard about the cheesesteak and pretzels, but not much else.

So I was definitely in for a surprise when I visited for the first time two years ago, and left raving about the meals I'd had. And given that I've lived in New York City for years, the bar was set high.

I returned to Philadelphia for the third time last weekend on a trip with three girlfriends from college. Like I always do before a trip, I researched the best restaurants in town and we set up reservations.

My friends and I did some sightseeing, but a lot of our weekend involved catching up over really great food.

We started off with afternoon tea at The Dandelion Pub, a British pub by Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr. We spent at least three hours there catching up, and they never rushed us.

The Dandelion Pub, 24 S. 18th St. Philadelphia

The afternoon tea menu included specialty cocktails. One favorite was the Summer Beer Flip: Bacardi rum, apricot marmalade, chocolate bitters, a whole egg, prima pils, and cinnamon.

The Dandelion Pub, 24 S. 18th St. Philadelphia

The Dandelion's "Queen Mary" Bloody Mary was also amazing, and reminded me of home as it included a Brooklyn brine pickle.

Haunting Infrared Photos Of War-Torn Congo

If Richard Mosse's photography has succeeded in doing one thing, it's illustrating the crimson of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a way that makes the war-torn nation look like it's from another world.

Which fits, as it seems that way.

Mosse uses an old decommissioned form of military infrared photography called "Kodak Aerochrome" which "registers an invisible spectrum of infrared light, rendering the green landscape in vivid hues of lavender, crimson, and hot pink,"according to his website.

The method blends reality with fiction, simultaneously highlighting an altogether ignored sore on the face of the human race: the marginalization of 70 million people who are mired in one of the globe's most pressing human rights struggles.

Citizens of the Congo have struggled silently through years of genocide, altogether invisible to the consciousness of the outside world.

Mosse, if only for a second, made people more aware.

The Congo is Africa's second-largest country and boasts untapped raw mineral deposits estimated to be worth more than $ 24 trillion.

Yet Congolese citizens are among the poorest in the world, as the country has the second lowest nominal GDP per capita.

The country ranks last in the UN's human development index, which measures life expectancy, educational attainment, and income.

The 50 Sexiest Cars Of The Past 100 Years

1968 Mustang Fastback GT 390 bullitt replica

Cars may be machines, but they can still be incredibly sexy.

Curving lines, powerful engines, and outrageous luxury can draw people in just as much as a pretty face.

That's why we've assembled this list of the 50 sexiest cars of the past century.

We've got American muscle, Italian speed, and British luxury. We even have Swedish power.

Some of these cars were lemons, some were total flops. Others were wildly successful and are still on the market today. But every last one is packed with sex appeal.

50. A rather hefty ride, the Hummer H2 has none of the sleek characteristics that often note a sexy car. Its appealing, brawny look marked the heyday of the big American SUV.

49. A product of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Miura was one of the first cars Lamborghini built to rival Ferrari (Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the car company after making his money in tractors). The model pictured here once belonged to Frank Sinatra.

48. Maserati was founded in 1914, but it didn't build a grand touring car (for luxury and long drives) until 1957, when the 3500GT went into production. With room for four and a straight-six cylinder engine, it was a beautiful machine.

The 12 Most Challenging Running Trails In America

running outside

Running is one of the most popular means of getting fit for a reason: It gives you a whole body workout, almost anyone can do it, and the only gear you need is yourself.

Today is National Running Day, and in honor of the holiday, we've put together a list of the 12 most difficult running trails in the U.S.

Let us know if we missed any.

Double Oak Trail, Pelham, Ala.

Distance: 17 miles

The Double Oak Trail in Pelham, Ala., is a 17-mile loop covering not just beautiful, lush valleys, but many steep, uphill climbs.

The terrain is rocky and has many tree roots emerging from the ground, which make for a tough obstacle course.

Grand Canyon Trails, Coconino, Ariz.

Distance: 42 miles

The elevated temperatures and high altitude can make running along the trails in the Grand Canyon a bit perilous.

But the difficulty of the route is definitely made up for by the beauty of the Canyon views and the bragging rights afterward.

Olmstead Loop Trail at Auburn S.R.A., Cool, Calif.

Distance: 8.6 miles

The Olmstead Loop Trail climbs up and down a number of steep canyons and is laborious to maneuver, especially when the trail is muddy. The Olmstead Loop is the longest trail in the Auburn State Recreation Area, a park also known for the K2 training hill, where top runners train.

Why Riotous Istanbul Is Still The Coolest City In Europe [PHOTOS]

$
0

istanbulWithin the last week, a rash of intense and violent protests have broken out around Turkey.

The protests began in Istanbul over a plan to demolish the last park in the city, but soon escalated into widespread protests around the country directed at the Turkish government.

In Istanbul, protesters have taken over Taksim Square, a major hub in the city, where they have continuously clashed with police in riot gear.

Yet just outside the chaotic square, life in Istanbul continues as normal and the city continues to be a playground for the young and hip. The city's tourism industry isn't particularly worried about the riots, which are largely confined from the areas where violence has broken out. And the U.S. State Department hasn't issued any warnings about travel to Turkey.

Though tourists should be careful, especially near places like Taksim Square and Besiktas where protesters have gathered, the city is still a worthwhile place to visit.

Tourists are still visiting Istanbul despite anti-government protests that have broken out. If you go, be sure to avoid Taksim Square, at the far end of Istiklal Caddesi, where protesters and police have been clashing.

It's gotten very intense in Taksim Square, with two people dead and many injured.

There have been frequent clashes with the police. Nothing captures this more than the iconic photos of the "lady in red"— a woman who was sprayed directly in the face with teargas by a policeman on May 28 in Gezi Park of Taksim Square. She has since become the symbol of the dissidents.

9 Elements Of The Perfect 'Man Chair'

$

old couple recliners

If you used to watch Frasier, you know that he suffered the ugliness of his father's grossly overstuffed, battered "man chair" for 11 years.

But the really painful part came in the series finale when Frasier's father moves out and Frasier finally gets to put his beloved Eames recliner in the living room.

His father comes to visit, sits back in the Eames recliner and says "Hmmm ... this is pretty comfortable. I would have been okay with this!"

So what makes a chair a "Man Chair?" Does it have to look like a pillow fight is going on underneath worn out upholstery? Does it have to be so large it takes up most of the living room?

Click here to see what a man chair needs >

More From Houzz:

1. Comfort.

When choosing a chair, a man's number-one concern is comfort. One of the things most men love is a high back so they can lean their head back to relax. The iconic Eames recliner is softly padded and has a nice high back and angled head rest. Frasier's dad liked it ... maybe your man will too.

2. Leather, leather and more leather.

Have I mentioned that men love leather? I'm a designer, not a psychologist, so I can't tell you why — but there is something about the look, smell and feel of leather that is irresistible to most men. Maybe it goes back to the days when the men were the hunters. Whatever it is, give him a rich, brown or black leather and he'll love it. Cream color? Not so much.

3. A place to rest his arms.

Notice how the chair on the right has armrests that extend all the way to the front edge of the chair. He can sit all the way back in this chair, and his hands won't be dangling over the end of the armrests.

It's a good phone, but you should only consider buying it if having a keyboard is the only feature you really care about. New BlackBerry 10 phones don't have a good app selection, and the Q10's touchscreen is much smaller than other top-tier phones.

The Definitive List Of The 11 Best Mad Men Episodes Of All Time

$
0
0

mad men don draper season 6

Mad Men is universally acclaimed as one of the best shows on television— ever.

Not only does the show's production quality give it a visual flair like no other, the AMC channel's hit series deftly weaves in influences from genres outside of traditional serialized drama and integrates historical events from the period in a way that doesn't feel forced or hackneyed.

Plus, we love it because ad execs are the heroes and the villains.

These are the episodes that cemented Mad Men's reputation in the history of the small screen.

11. Season 3, Episode 6 - Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency

Besides being the funniest episode of Mad Men, this episode received acclaim for its perfect use of an old screenwriting trope: if you show the gun in the first act, someone better get shot in the third. Only this time the gun was a lawnmower operated by a drunk secretary and the guy getting shot had his foot and a not-insignificant amount of blood sprayed over four Sterling Cooper employees.

While it was hinted that something was going to happen with the lawnmower from the beginning of the episode, the climactic moment of seeing Guy MacKendrick's foot burst onto the screen was an unexpected moment of both humor and gore.

10. Season 5, Episode 6 - Far Away Places

At this point in the series, Roger Sterling was starting to feel a little boring to most viewers. After losing Lucky Strike, he didn't seem to be doing much but frivolously spending money and drinking at the office. Then he dropped acid.

Becoming seemingly "enlightened," Roger became one of the few characters on the show to realize that he didn't have to feel trapped in an unhappy marriage. Even after coming to terms with the fact that it was over between Jane and himself, Roger gained an extra bit of pep that made him one of the more fun characters on the show in the latter half of the fifth season.

9. Season 6, Episode 8 - The Crash

Whoa. What did the heck did the SCDP team take in this episode? MDMA? Heroine? This episode gave us an interesting and entertaining look at drug use in the '60s, only this time in the context of the uppers that professionals were taking to deal with the stress of the corporate world.

Besides the drug-fueled antics, seeing young Don's childhood in the brothel gave us an interesting look at the experiences that shaped Don's outlook on sex and life in general. Knowing that he lost his virginity to a prostitute (and that his mother beat him when she found out) explained a lot.

Weird And Awesome Perks Some Tech Companies Give Their Top Execs

Meg Whitman

Getting ready to negotiate a new job or a pay raise? Don't forget the perks!

If you need ideas on the kinds of perks companies are offering these days, here's a few granted last year to some of the highest paid tech execs.

They range from things you would expect: hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of time on the corporate jet to oddball things like "personal" use of a company administrative assistant.

HP's Meg Whitman enjoyed the company's many jets

Billionaire Meg Whitman doesn't need her own private jet these days. HP maintains its own fleet of airplanes.

As its CEO, one big perk is using those jets for private travel for herself and her family. She accumulated $198,000+ worth of personal aircraft usage last year.

She earned $15.4 million last year, including perks.

IBM's Ginni Rometty REALLY enjoyed the company's jets

IBM's CEO isn't a billionaire, yet, but she knows how to enjoy IBM's fleet of jets, too.

She spent $304,376 for personal travel on the company-owned aircraft last year.

She earned $16.1 million in 2012, including perks.

TIBCO'S Vivek Ranadivé got his employment contract legal fees paid

Vivek Ranadivé founded TIBCO Software in 1997 and is still the company's CEO.

Last year, he renegotiated his employment contract and the company picked up his $35,000 legal tab for that.

He earned $11.2 million total last year, including perks.

A thread recently popped up on Reddit running down some mind-blowing technology people probably think doesn't exist in real life, but actually does.

We've combed it over, looking for the best of the bunch.

Mind-controlled robotic limbs.

A 52-year-old quadriplegic woman has gained full control of a robotic arm with her mind, according to University of Pittsburgh professor of neurobiology Andrew Schwartz.

Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo explains how it was done: "Schwartz's team implanted two 96-channel intracortical microelectrodes in Jan's motor cortex, the part of the brain responsible for controlling the movement of our limbs. The results, according to the scientists, were uncanny. They were surprised by how fast Jan took control of the robotic arm."

Videodrome

There are two types of movie fans: Those who have been freaked out by the 1983 cult classic "Videodrome," and those who have never heard of it.

The movie, starring James Woods and Debbie Harry, is about a cable TV executive who becomes addicted to a secret "pirate" video channel that broadcasts a late-night torture porn show called "Videodrome." The show ends up taking control of his life, through a series of hallucinations.

The movie was made by director David Cronenberg, who has spent a lifetime investigating the creepy interface between sex and technology. He later became famous for "The Fly,""Dead Ringers,""Crash" and "eXistenZ."

What's interesting about "Videodrome," however, is the way it explores the idea that the virtual world is more interesting than the real world, especially as it relates to sex.

Bear in mind that Cronenberg shot this idea more than a decade before the internet existed as a household device.

It's creepy how prescient the movie is about modern life ...

The original shock of 'Videodrome' in 1983 was the idea that people would actually want to watch someone being tortured. In 2004, the 'Saw' franchise was born and torture-porn is now old hat.

In 'Videodrome,' James Woods' character, Max Renn, becomes addicted to watching the show. The idea was ridiculous at the time. But today the idea of being 'addicted' to the internet is widely accepted.

When 'Videodrome' portrayed the kinky sex life of Nikkie Brand (Debbie Harry) in 1983, it was shocking. Today, BDSM is a pop culture staple.
