8 unlikely companies are desperate to cash in on the royal wedding's $1.4 billion goldmine — here are the most absurd results

  • The royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry has every possible brand ready to jump on the bandwagon.
  • Velveeta is creating a crown-shaped mac and cheese, KFC has special buckets, and Dunkin' Donuts has recruited a Real Housewife to hawk "Royal Love" doughnuts.
  • We've ranked the attempts at cashing in on the royal wedding based on their absurdity, humor, and the weakness of their connection between the brand and the wedding.

What does the royal wedding have to do with American fast-food chains?

Not much — but that doesn't mean that brands aren't going to try and cash in on Meghan Markle's and Prince Harry's big day.

In the week leading up to the royal nuptials, a growing number of brands have come out with deals and promotions to align themselves with Meghan and Harry's wedding. The royal wedding is expected to provide the British economy with a $1.4 billion boost so it makes sense that brands are hungry to get a cut of the cash.

However, the stunts are getting pretty weird. Impressively, they've managed to come across as bizarre even in the crowded field that is modern marketing. This is in an era where dessert brands are tweeting: "If a MoonPie sees its shadow on this day it will signal the end of times."

In an effort to quantitatively measure just how much the brands are at it again, Business Insider created a ranking system just for the occasion. The system addresses three factors — absurdity, humor, and the weakness of their connection between the brand and the wedding — that are ranked on a scale from one to five, five being the top score.

Here's how companies' attempts to cash in on the royal wedding measure up:

Strongbow Hard Ciders

Strongbow is trying to cash in on what it calls Americans' "obsession" with the royal wedding by rolling out a new flavor of cider and special teacups.

"Through the union of our British heritage and a modern twist on rosé, we are marrying two of America's latest obsessions just in time for the fairy tale Royal Wedding this spring," Jessica Robinson, the vice president of parent company Portfolio Brands, said in a statement.

Strongbow is an aggressively British brand trying to expand in the US, so it makes sense that the royal wedding is like catnip to them.

Or does it? If anything, this royal wedding promotion may just be a little too on the nose. Teacups play into American stereotypes of Britishness to a degree that is almost embarrassing. Who is Strongbow trying to fool here?!

Absurdity: 2

Connective stretch: 1

Humor: 2 (+1 for calling rosé an "American obsession")

Total: 5/15

Dairy Queen

The connection between Dairy Queen and the royal wedding is tenuous, but it's there.

I mean, first of all, we've got Dairy Queen. For those unfamiliar with the chain's dessert menu, it sells "Royal Treats." And, from there, it's an easy transition from royal treats to royal wedding. Honestly, Dairy Queen should have just called up Meghan and catered the entire thing.

Unfortunately, Dairy Queen isn't giving out free dessert on Saturday. It's just advertising the Royal Oreo Blizzard Treat and the Royal New York Cheesecake Blizzard Treat. A waste of a royal wedding, if you ask me.

Absurdity: 2

Connective stretch: 4

Humor: 1

Total: 7/15

PEZ

On Sunday, somebody paid $9,897 for a "one-of-a-kind PEZ dispenser set" that looks like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

"In 2011, PEZ worked with eBay for Charity to auction off an exclusive pair of royal dispensers for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton," the candy brand said in a statement. "After seeing success from that campaign and the growing number of fans of the married couple-to-be, PEZ was prompted to create this set to benefit Make-A-Wish foundation."

I do not know if Price Harry had to sign off on his face looking like a redhead Shrek, but it's for charity, so I guess we can let it slide.

I also do not know who bid almost $10K for this, though skimming through his or her eBay accounts reveals many other PEZ-related bids. I hope that this pair of lovebirds vomiting up candies is the pièce de résistance of the lucky bidder's PEZ dispenser collection.

Absurdity: 2

Connective stretch: 3

Humor: 3 (+1 for Harry's face)

Total: 8/15

"Rage 2" is what happens when the open-world experience of "Grand Theft Auto" meets the sun-drenched post-apocalypse.

Just look at this madness:

RAGE 2

The newly-unveiled "Rage 2" won't arrive for at least another year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but we got our first good look at it this week.

Here's what we know so far about the next big game from the folks behind "DOOM" and "Just Cause":

SEE ALSO: There's a simple, obvious reason 'Fortnite' is the biggest game in the world right now

"Rage 2" is a sequel to — you guessed it — "Rage," a 2011 game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Like the previous game, "Rage 2" is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland — the remnants of civilization after an asteroid collided with Earth. As expected, society has devolved into violent factions.

And how do you deal with those violent factions? With giant guns, of course. And some superpowers (more on that in a moment).

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Cleaning carDuring winter, the extent of cleaning your car probably consists of removing snow and salt so you can actually see where you're going — but during warmer seasons it's all about attention to detail.

Dirt, pollen, tree sap, bird droppings, and normal road build up are just some of the many things that can prevent your ride from looking its best.

Instead of constantly spending money at the car wash, you can create an arsenal of products that will keep your car in pristine condition — and in the long run, you'll save a lot of money.

I own three classic BMWs: a 1988 325i convertible, a 1991 318is, and a 1993 525i wagon. With each of them being more than 25 years old, I do my very best to maintain and preserve their appearance and these are the products I use.

Whether you're a meticulous enthusiast preparing for a car show or an average person trying to care for your car, these are the products you'll also want at your disposal. You'll find everything from car wash soaps and waxes to leather cleaners and microfiber cloths — plus a few other unexpected picks.

Checkout the best car cleaning and detailing products, below:

Chemical Guys Snow Foam Car Wash

$9.99 for 16 ounces or $29.99 for 1 gallon, available on Amazon

If your at-home car washes include using liquid dish soap from the kitchen, you're doing it all wrong. Chemical Guys' car wash eliminates dirt and grime with a pH-neutral formula that's safe on all surfaces of your car. It has a foaming agent for maximum suds and a fresh honeydew scent.

Chemical Guys Microfiber Wash Mitt

$6.99, available on Amazon

To go along with the right car wash soap, you need the right cleaning tool. The Chemical Wash mitt easily cleans your car without scratching your paint. Its made of an extra plush, soft, and absorbent microfiber material, and is easier to control than a towel.

SuperClean Degreaser

$5.47, available on Amazon

SuperClean Degreaser has a multitude of cleaning uses, so it comes in handy for many of your car detailing needs. I wouldn't recommend using it at full strength on your paint, but it works wonders cleaning built up oil, grime, or dirt on your engine bay, under-body, or exhaust pipes. When diluted, it does a great job a cleaning carpets, floor mats, and chrome pieces as well.

9 ways you can show appreciation on Armed Forces Day

blessIT

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day which serves as a day to honor all those who serve in the sister-service branches.

The men and women of the military have made exceptional sacrifices and so on Armed Forces Day and all other military appreciation days, we can do small acts to show our gratitude to them.

Below are some ideas of how to show your appreciation:

Volunteer at a VA hospital or donate your time to a veterans group.

There are 152 veteran medical centers in the US as well as hundreds of clinics, outpatient and nursing facilities. Call your local VA medical center or community to learn more about donating your time.

Talk to veterans or an active service member.

Ask questions about their service, why they joined the military and listen to their stories. A little interest can go a long way.

Visit a memorial.

All across the US, military members are honored through monuments that memorialize their service and sacrifice. Washington DC is home to 8, but monuments dedicated to members of the military can be found throughout the nation.

11 makeup mistakes that can cause acne

Makeup brushes

If you struggle with acne, there’s a good chance you prefer to cover up your zits with makeup as much as you can. And with so many amazing beauty products on the market, it’s actually pretty easy to cover acne with foundation, concealer, and other goodies without breaking the bank.

But unfortunately, many of us are prone to making makeup mistakes that can make acne worse, or even cause more breakouts, without even realizing it.

These seemingly-harmless habits, from using dirty makeup brushes to using products way past their prime, are things you should never do if you have acne, because you could unknowingly make your breakouts worse.

Here are the 11 makeup mistakes that could be contributing to your breakouts.

You're not applying makeup to a clean face.

Even if you're bleary-eyed and barely awake when you're getting ready in the morning, you'll want to be sure to wash your face before putting your makeup on. Starting with a clean canvas helps remove any dirt or oils that have built up on your face.

"To avoid breaking out from your makeup, make sure to prep the skin using a salicylic acid-based cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and dead cells from the surface," advised Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. In 2017, he told Makeup.com that prepping skin with a cleanser is an easy way to keep makeup from breaking you out, which many of us might skip in the interest of saving a few precious minutes in the morning.

You're not cleaning makeup brushes regularly.

Think about this one for a second: When is the last time you thoroughly cleaned your makeup brushes? If you can't recall the last time your tools and applicators got a good scrub down, they're probably harboring all kinds of icky bacteria, oils, and dirt, which are doing your skin no favors.

As for how often you need to clean your brushes, well, it's likely more often than you'd think. Ideally, you're cleaning them after every use, but even pros understand that isn't super realistic.

As Cristina Bartolucci, celebrity makeup artist and founder of natural cosmetics line PEEK Beauty, explained to Women's Health in 2017, you should "treat the hair on your makeup brushes like the hair on your head.

"Wash and condition them once a week. This will keep the bacteria load down," she explained, adding, "there is nothing like the feeling of a clean soft brush on your face."

For sponges, you'll want to wash with soap and hot water, squeezing until the water runs clear,  Bartolucci said.

You're throwing brushes in the bottom of your makeup bag.

Giving your brushes a solid cleansing on the regular is all for nothing if you're not storing them properly afterwards. Even though most of us are pressed for time on busy mornings, it's crucial to give your brushes room to breathe … which definitely isn't happening in the bottom of your makeup bag.

Brushes should be stored separately from makeup — upside down if possible — and given plenty of wiggle room to air dry.

The median audience age of the 10 biggest TV shows signals how few young people are tuning in

The Good Doctor

The biggest shows on networks are increasingly drawing in older viewers, which is a challenge for brands that want to reach out to young people.

The New York Times published a report Monday called "Why Traditional TV is in Trouble."

The article describes how networks are in trouble due to the decline in ratings, especially among young people, many of whom don't even own TVs or watch anything live.

The article includes data from Nielsen showing the median age of viewers of the 10 most popular shows on TV in the 2017-2018 season. They range from late 50s to late 40s.

"This season’s top-rated show, the revival of 'Roseanne,' has a median viewer age of 52.9 years," the Times wrote. "The network show with the lowest median age is 'Riverdale' on the CW, at 37.2."

With young people using devices other than a TV to watch TV— often going straight to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu for content— the networks have a limited live audience which hampers the reach for potential advertisers.

Here, we listed the top ten shows of the 2017-2018 season along with their median age and Rotten Tomatoes score:

How much the average person in 40 different countries takes home after taxes

$

USA united states america

  • Tax rates vary in each country, from over 50% to 0% for the average wage earner in the country.
  • Spain, France, and Germany all have the same 30% tax rate for the average citizen, but Germany has the highest average salary.
  • Switzerland and Denmark have the highest pre-tax salaries, but Switzerland's tax rate is much lower.

The salary you negotiate isn't the amount you end up receiving in your paychecks. The primary reason: taxes.

It is well known that every country has a different corporate tax rate, but each one also has different tax rates for individuals. CapRelo published a study on tax rates and take home salaries in 40 countries, including the United States, Germany, and China.

Often, salary comparisons in different countries don't include tax rates. But the higher a country's tax rate, the bigger the difference between annual pay and take-home pay once taxes are taken out.

A couple of countries in the report have practical tax rates over 50%, while two nations are essentially tax-free for the median earner. This means that two people with similar salaries in different countries can have vastly different paychecks.

Below, the individual tax rate in 40 countries, ranked from highest tax rates to the lowest. The tax rate is what someone making the nation's average wage would pay. The average citizen's pay before and after taxes is also included for each country.

10 mainstream cars that are likely to become collector's items

$

2018 dodge challenger srt demon

  • The Hagerty Hot List is released each year and includes vehicles that are likely to gain value over time and become collector's items.
  • To qualify for the list, a vehicle must have a suggested retail price from its manufacturer of less than $100,000 and be available for the model year in which the list is released.
  • Many of the entries on the 2018 list appeal to niches in the auto market.

Each year, the classic car insurance company Hagerty releases the Hagerty Hot List, which includes the 10 mass-production vehicles made by mainstream automakers the company believes are likely to gain value over time and become collector's items.

The list's goal isn't to promote the obvious contenders — supercars made by the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini — but, rather, to highlight more affordable cars, some of which might not immediately come to mind for classic car enthusiasts.

To qualify for the list, a vehicle must have a suggested retail price from its manufacturer of less than $100,000 and be available for the model year in which the list is released.

The 2018 list includes entries that surprised Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty, like the Kia Stinger GT and Honda Civic Type R.

"I never would have envisioned a Kia Stinger as a collectible car," he said in an interview with Business Insider.

Hagerty said he was also surprised to see two Jeeps, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and Wrangler, on the list. While the auto industry is shifting to meet increasing consumer demand for SUVs, crossovers, and trucks, Hagerty said they tend to be less enjoyable to drive than smaller vehicles.

"SUVs are the hot type of car, but they're not often that fun," he said.

According to Hagerty, SUVs tend to feel like they were conceived by focus groups rather than designers with a sense of aesthetics.

"Focus groups design bad cars," he said. "There's just a fear in corporate America. People are afraid to take risk."

If there's a trend that runs through the cars on the 2018 Hagerty Hot List, it's the tendency to appeal to a niche in the auto market, like the Audi RS 3, which Hagerty said is geared toward a "tech-forward, European buyer," and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, which favors "performance capability over practicality."

While the auto industry may make the bulk of its money from vehicles that appeal to a wide range of consumers, the cars that will age best could be the ones that fit the specific needs of a specialized customer.

Here are the vehicles that made the 2018 Hagerty Hot List and the explanations the company gave for their inclusion.

SEE ALSO: These are the 15 most reliable car brands of 2018

Audi RS 3

Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP): $54,900

Why it was included:"What do you get when you stuff Audi’s sonorous and brutish turbocharged inline-five into its most petite sedan? A 400-hp wallop in sheep’s clothing. Perhaps one of the best sleepers out there, the RS 3 will do 0–60 in under four seconds, snapping off quick shifts from its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With all-wheel drive and a lively, yet forgiving chassis, the RS 3 is a tasteful tribute to punching above your weight."

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

MSRP: $69,000

Why it was included: "Combining GM’s 650-hp supercharged V-8 engine with the Camaro’s tried-and-true 1LE track handling package has, predictably, sensational results. It’s the first time Chevy has offered the 1LE as an add-on to the ZL1, and rarely does a car meld muscle car potency with the colossal grip and track durability of a top-flight sports car. The fact that the ZL1 1LE does price that severely undercuts its competitors is a compelling reason to get in on the action, if that earth-shattering exhaust note isn’t enough to give you butterflies."

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

MSRP: $84,995

Why it was included: "Straight from the factory, Dodge will sell you a street-legal surface-to-surface missile on four wheels that is capable of quarter-miles in the 9s at 140 mph. Boasting 840 horses with the kid-in-a-candy-store $1 Demon Crate and 100-octane gas, the Demon is built for the drag strip, plain and simple. It has massively fat rear radials, and skinny rubber up front. It has a transmission brake, and in stock form no rear bench or passenger seat. With your foot to the floor, all you’ll be able to hear is the shriek of the supercharged V-8 as your brain overloads on acceleration-induced dopamine."

'Solo' is the worst 'Star Wars' movie since 'Attack of the Clones,' according to critics

solo

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" doesn't come to theaters until May 25, but the reviews are already in — and the Force doesn't seem to be as strong with this "Star Wars" movie.

As of Wednesday morning, "Solo" had a 72% critic score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 80 reviews.

That's bad for a "Star Wars" movie. While it's not as bad of a score as the worst-reviewed movie in the saga — "The Phantom Menace"— it's still the lowest since "Attack of the Clones" in 2002.

Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio said that "Solo's" third act lags and that it's the first "Star Wars" movie to make him worried about franchise fatigue.

"The conclusion of the movie is stale, filled with clichés, and tries too hard to set the foundation for future 'Solo' movies by featuring one of the most random cameos you'll ever see in a movie," Guerrasio said in his review.

He's not the only one underwhelmed with "Solo."Rolling Stone's Peter Travers said the movie was "dull" and plays it too safe.

"Somehow Han Solo — the roguish 'Star Wars' hellion famous for breaking all the rules — finds himself in a feel-good movie that doesn't break any," Travers wrote.

Slate's Sam Adams said "Solo" wasn't the worst "Star Wars" movie, "just the one with the least compelling reason to exist."

So how does "Solo" stack up against other "Star Wars" movies? We ranked all of them based on Rotten Tomatoes critic scores. (Ties were broken with audience scores.)

14 of the biggest royal weddings in history

$
0

kate middleton fashion wedding

For today's normal folk, a wedding costs around $30,000 and lasts a few hours — maybe even an entire weekend. For royals, things are a little bit different.

Throughout history, members of royal families all over the globe have been getting hitched in style. They drop millions of dollars on dresses, security, and lavish multi-day parties. They hold ceremonies at ancient castles or private islands — one royal even said his vows surrounded by 20,000 spectators in a custom-built stadium. (Sort of makes that $30,000 affair sound like a bargain.)

And Kate and Will aren't the only royals who tied the knot in such a spectacular fashion. Here's a look at some of the biggest, best, most extravagant royal weddings of all time.

Queen Elizabeth II married her husband Philip in 1947, when she was still just Princess Elizabeth.

Elizabeth and Philip are distant cousins who met at a family wedding in 1934, when they were children. It's been said that Elizabeth fell in love with Philip at first sight. A few years later, they began exchanging letters and in 1946, they announced their engagement.

Their wedding ceremony was broadcast to 200 million radio listeners, and the young couple received 2,500 gifts and 10,000 congratulatory telegrams from well-wishers across the world. Elizabeth's custom satin gown was breathtaking — though she had to use ration coupons to obtain the material, according to the BBC.

In just a few years, Elizabeth would ascend to the throne at age 25, following the untimely death of her father. But the stress of royal life doesn't seem to have hurt her marriage: Philip and Elizabeth recently celebrated their 70th anniversary

In 1960, Princess Margaret's marriage ceremony became the first televised royal wedding in history.

Margaret (Queen Elizabeth's younger sister) married a photographer named Anthony-Armstrong Jones. Sadly, the relationship wasn't to be, and the couple called it quits in 1978.

In 1981, Princess Diana and Prince Charles became the first royal couple to share a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

750 million people watched Queen Elizabeth's oldest son Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer on TV — that's not counting the 3,500 attendees at Westminster Abbey and the 600,000 who crowded the streets of London hoping to glimpse the couple.

There were a few bumps that day (Diana spilled a bottle of perfume on her dress and both bride and groom flubbed parts of their vows!) but the crowd went wild when they shared a timid kiss at Buckingham Palace. At the reception, guests could choose from one of 27 wedding cakes.

But their marriage would soon be plagued by scandal: Both admitted to extramarital affairs, and they divorced in 1996. Diana died in a car crash shortly thereafter; Charles eventually remarried.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best mosquito repellant

The Insider Pick:

  • Effective mosquito prevention requires a multi-pronged approach in which you remove breeding grounds, kill off adult insects, and deploy products that repel these dangerous pests. If you had to choose just one item for your anti-mosquito arsenal, a wise choice would be time-tested OFF! Deep Woods Insect Repellent with its 25% DEET concentration that wards off mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and more.

Mosquitoes don't like me much, and that's the only thing that I like about them. I can sit in the grass, dripping with sweat after a run, and get not a single bite. I can spend an entire summer afternoon outside mowing, grilling, or playing with my kids, and if I find even one itchy welt on my person, I'm surprised. My wife and kids, on the other hand, can't seem to get from the front door to the car without mosquitoes launching a full-scale banzai attack. Mosquitoes love their blood, an honor any of them would shed with alacrity were such possible.

So while the mosquitoes and I have achieved a detente, the fact that they have such a vendetta against my family makes us adversaries nonetheless. In peak mosquito season here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, they make a powerful adversary indeed. In fact, if I didn't use every single one of the tips and products featured here, our outdoor property would be effectively off-limits to the family from late April through late September, the mosquito season here near NYC.

Pernicious and unpleasant as mosquitoes may be, with effort they can be bested. First, you need to prepare a mosquito-safe property. Above all else, that means eliminating standing water, the breeding ground for these insects. Even a tiny pool of still water — and I mean two ounces in the bottom of a planter or misplaced mug — can breed scores of skeeters. Check for water pooled in toys, flowerpots, buckets, the seats of chairs, backed up gutters, and everywhere else.

The good news is that many mosquito species only travel a few dozen yards in search of food, so if you clear all the standing water from your yard, you will be in decent shape already. Female mosquitoes can live for nearly two months, though, so if the area is already infested, simply removing breeding grounds might be too little too late. That's why there are so many fine anti-mosquito products like we're talking about today.

And hey, some quick bits of trivia for you, and also the reason I singled out female mosquitoes: male mosquitoes usually live less than two weeks, and they don't bite. And when female mosquitoes do bite, it's not for their own nourishment. Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes eat plant nectar, honey, or other sugary substances to feed themselves. The blood is used to help build up eggs prior to laying the next generation of bloodsuckers.

Now on to our top picks for the best mosquito repellent products:

Read on in the slides below to check out the best products for repelling mosquitoes.

The best mosquito repellent spray

Why you'll love it: OFF! Deep Woods Insect Repellent provides hours of reliable mosquito irritation prevention thanks to the 25% concentration of DEET.

Here are some things you need to know about DEET: It has been available to the public since the 1950s, and in all that time and after countless tests, it is still considered the most effective mosquito repellent formula. The AAP considers it safe for use on children as young as two months old in concentrations up to 30%. It effectively repels mosquitoes, ticks, gnats, flies, and many other bugs, too.

Now here is what you need to know about OFF! Deep Woods Insect Repellent: It has a DEET concentration of 24% and a proper application provides up to eight hours of protection. And really, what else do you need to know?

It might not smell like roses, but it works well and it's safe for humans of every age above eight weeks. We keep a can in the house, one in the car, and I always bring OFF! when I go hiking or camping, especially when my son is with me.

Beyond mosquitoes, note that one customer reminds us that OFF! Deep Woods is also "effective against deer ticks," another bite you very much want to avoid. The product testing experts from Consumer Reports hail its "excellent performance at repelling mosquitoes" and heartily recommended the spray.

Pros: Time-tested efficacy, safe for use on people of all ages, good price for a great product

Cons: Smell is less than great, but you get used to it

The best mosquito control spray for your property

Why you'll love it: Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate can rid your yard of mosquitoes for several weeks at a time after just one easy application.

I tried to go the natural route, I really did. Last summer, the first summer we lived in this house here in New York, I sprayed down the entire yard with two different natural anti-mosquito sprays that were filled with things like clove oil, cedar oil, sesame oil, and so forth. You know what happened? Nothing.

Well, OK the yard smelled crisp and fresh for a day or two, but there wasn't any appreciable diminishment in the concentration of mosquitoes. Then I hooked a bottle of Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate to the hose, soaked every square inch of the property, front yard, backyard, bushes, trees, mulch beds, and more. And to my pleasant surprise, for the next week or so, there were remarkably fewer mosquitoes around.

While I can't vouch for the brand's claim that the spray prevents bug issues for four weeks, I can say that with twice monthly sprays, our yard we much more habitable even during peak mosquito season. As this stuff is safe for use around kids, pets, and even near food plants, and as it's affordable, too, I honestly plan to spray the property every Friday so we can enjoy maximum protection each weekend.

With hundreds of reviews posted on Amazon, Cutter Backyard Bug Control Spray Concentrate has a solid four-star average rating. Most customers echo my own sentiments as well expressed by a user named William who said: "It works... and that surprised me." A lady named Sarah was a bit more effusive when she left a review saying: "I have never seen a yard spray work like this in my life."

Pros: Multiday effectiveness, one bottle treats 5000 square feet, safe for people and pets

Cons: Also kills lots of other insects

The best mosquito repellent wipes

Why you'll love them: Aunt Fannie's Mosquito Repellent Wipes apply mosquito repellent directly to your skin with more precision than an aerosol spray, and the unique formula is designed to repel bugs without damaging your skin's microbiome.

The founders of the Aunt Fannie's brand have an interesting take on many of the products most of us take for granted: They're too effective. That is to say, many of the cleaning products we use to wipe down countertops or showers don't only clean away grime and bacteria, they also kill off the healthy microscopic "allies" found on our skin, the helpful bacteria that create each person's microbiome. To that end, the company has created everything from all-purpose cleaning formulas to glass cleaners to anti-pest powders and sprays that perform their dedicated function without the unnecessary wholesale slaughter of harmless and even beneficial bacteria.

The Aunt Fannie's Mosquito Repellent Wipes come individually packaged so they stay moist and potent right up until you need to use one. To do so, you simply rip open the packet and then rub the wipe over any exposed skin you want to make unappealing to mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, and more. While not as robust a repellent as a DEET-laden formula, my family's less-than-scientific testing so far has returned positive results. And what a pleasant, minty scent, too.

I'll check back in if things change during peak mosquito season in midsummer, but for now, I say why not repel the pests and save the bacteria?

Pros: Repels insects without harming helpful bacteria, pleasant odor, compact packets great for travel

Cons: Rather expensive for daily use

iPhone apps and headphones

iOS 11 is the most recent operating system for Apple's iPhones and iPads. It's packed with features, but only a handful of those features will really change the way you use your iPhone.

Here are 13 of the most useful features in iOS 11:

SEE ALSO: All the changes coming to Apple's App Store in iOS 11

DON'T MISS: All the changes and new features coming to your iPhone's camera in iOS 11

1. Live Photos can be tweaked and manipulated.

Now you can make your live photos into GIFs, which you can make bounce back and forth. Also, you can finally choose which still frame of the Live Photo is the main image, making it easier to find the perfect moment to keep for yourself, or share on social media.

2. You can store roughly twice as many photos and videos on your phone as you could with iOS 10.

Apple changed the compression format in iOS 11, which means you can store more photos and videos on your phone than you could before — roughly twice as many as you could store in iOS 10. You need to activate this feature though: Just go to your Settings app, select Photos, then select "Optimize iPhone Store."

3. The App Store is now more organized and much cleaner-looking.

Apple finally brought the design language it established for its other apps like Apple Music and News to the App Store, and the result is super clean, with better, bolder text. The new tabs at the bottom of the app are also an improvement: the personalized "Today" tab, for instance, highlights unique apps, while there's a separate tab just for games.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's big day will cost over 1,000 times more than the average wedding — here's where it will all go

Prince Harry Meghan Markle

  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are getting married at St. George's Chapel, in Windsor, on May 19.
  • Kensington Palace will cover the cost of the royal wedding, an expense traditionally taken on by the bride's family.
  • The royal wedding is expected to cost in excess of $45 million (£32 million), most of which is allotted for security.

The average cost of a wedding for couples in the US and the UK is around $34,000 (£23,700).

Five figures is a huge expense for a one-day affair. That is, unless you're ultra-rich — and especially if you're royalty rich.

Next month, the world will bear witness to the most anticipated royal wedding in years. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to be married on May 19 at St. George's Chapel, in Windsor, and will begin a carriage procession immediately after the ceremony. Their reception will take place later on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Kensington Palace will cover the cost of the wedding, an expense traditionally taken on by the bride's family.

The case was the same for Kate Middleton and Prince William's 2011 royal wedding— the only item Middleton paid for was her six-figure Alexander McQueen dress. Their total wedding celebration cost $34 million (£23.7 million).

Markle and Prince Harry's wedding will reportedly cost in excess of $45.8 million (£32 million), according to Bride Book's estimation. That's over 1,000 more than the average wedding.

The venue is the biggest part of a typical wedding budget for couples in the US and the UK, taking up nearly half of the entire wedding cost. Access to St. George's Chapel — and St. George's Great Hall, where the wedding reception will take place — is free of charge for Markle and Prince Harry. Transportation is also free, thanks to the Queen's fleet of Rolls-Royces, Daimlers, and Bentleys.

The greatest cost for the royal couple? Security. Protecting Markle and Prince Harry, plus thousands of guests and onlookers, will run Kensington Palace a whopping $43 million (£30 million), estimates Bride Book. That includes the cost of snipers, undercover police, military technology, and security drones. The bulk of Kate Middleton and Prince William's wedding budget similarly went to security costs.

Otherwise, Markle and Prince Harry's total wedding spend, including food, cakes, entertainment, wardrobe, and the honeymoon, amounts to about $2.8 million.

Below, check out Bride Book's breakdown of what the royal wedding will cost.

Food and drinks — $686,000 (£479,000). Catering is needed for both the formal lunch reception and the dinner reception for friends and family. Top-shelf champagne, wine, and whiskey will likely come from the Royal Palace cellars. The Royal Family’s favorite champagne, Bollinger, goes for nearly $115 (£80) a bottle; that's approximately $195,000 (£136,000) spent on champagne alone.

Wedding dress — $430,000 (£300,000). The rumor mill is working overtime when it comes to Markle's dress, which will reportedly have a six-figure price tag and be paid for by the bride herself. A fashion icon in the making, Markle is expected to go with a traditional design and unique detail.

Marquee — $500,000 (£350,000). Even though Markle and Prince Harry are using St. George's Chapel free of charge, they'll need a large event tent to host guests on the grounds after the immediate reception in St. George's Great Hall.

Turks prefer to visit Europe and go to the Mediterranean or Aegean Seas.

Typical destinations: Within Turkey, people enjoy going to the Aegean Sea or the Mediterranean Sea, said Utku Hukum, a student from Turkey.

A newly-popular winter destination is Kars in Northeastern Turkey, a medieval capital with buildings dating to the 1100s, Hukum said.

International trips usually involve Eastern Europe, the Netherlands, Italy, and England, Hukum said.

Amount of vacation time mandated by law: 14.5 public holidays and up to 20 days of paid annual leave, according to WageIndicator.org.

Usual months to take off: Summer holidays abroad are popular, while folks stay in Turkey during the winter, Hukum said.

Swedes prefer outdoorsy trips in the summer and flee south during their long, dark winters.

Typical destinations: Swedish winters are cold, long, and dark, so residents prefer to abscond to Greece, Italy, Spain, and France, Alexander Waltner, a Swedish travel blogger, told Business Insider. Swedes tend to stick around in the summertime.

Waltner fondly remembers a childhood trip with his grandfather and his friend in a lake in southern Sweden called Harasjömåla.

"He taught me how to fish and how to prepare it, we hiked along the lake, and at night we made up a fire and grilled marshmallows," Waltner told Business Insider.

"I remember his stories about his childhood, and what it was like living in that era. It was just like in the classic movies," he said. "The wisdom and time spent in nature is something that I've kept alive ever since."

Amount of vacation time mandated by law: 25 days, according to the European Trade Union Institute.

But the north and west coasts of Jamaica are most popular. "The waters are pristine, and the sand is just about right," Powell told Business Insider.

The US, UK, and Canada are the most popular places abroad to visit, Powell said.

Amount of vacation time mandated by law: Up to three weeks of paid leave and 10 public holidays, according to the International Labor Organization.

Usual months to take off: Christmas, Easter, and Heroes' Day Weekend in October, Powell said.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best charcoal for grilling

The Insider Pick:

  • Although you may think that one bag of charcoal is almost identical to another, there are actually many different types and styles of charcoal to choose from. The best charcoal for the average backyard barbecue fan is the seven-pound bag of Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes.

Perhaps nothing signals that summer has started quite like getting the grill going. For many of us, cooking outside for friends and family is a time-honored way to celebrate the season. Besides getting everybody together outside, a good grill gives your food a unique smoky flavor.

There are quite a few different types of grills on the market these days, but the two basic types remain gas grills and charcoal grills. The final word over which one is better has been hotly debated by BBQ junkies for years, but in this guide, we’re focusing on finding the best charcoal for your charcoal grill. If you don't have a charcoal grill yet, buy one of our top picks for the best charcoal grills here.

Charcoal is a kind of half-burnt wood. It’s made by burning the wood very slowly without much oxygen so that it turns into carbon. People like to cook with charcoal because it burns hotter than wood and produces less smoke.

There are several different kinds of charcoal, including briquettes, lump charcoal, flavored briquettes, and more. The type of charcoal that's best for you varies by your grilling style and personal preferences. We break down which charcoal is best for different scenarios in our guide.

Here are our top picks for the best grilling charcoal you can buy:

Updated on 05/16/2018 by Malarie Gokey: Updated prices, links, and formatting. Added Kingsford charcoal as an affordable pick and added links to related grilling guides.

The best charcoal for grilling overall

Why you'll love them: The Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes burn beautifully to grill your dinner to perfection.

Royal Oak Enterprises started as the Bradleyville Charcoal Company in Missouri in 1953 but changed to its current name in 1983. Today, the family-owned company is one of the largest charcoal producers in North America. The popular Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes promise to be hot and ready for grilling in 15 minutes. The special ridge shape allows for better airflow and peak performance. The briquettes cost approximately 75 cents a pound.

Around the web, professional reviewers, including found these to be the best overall briquettes for the average backyard barbecue lover. According to The Wirecutter, this charcoal burns hotter and longer than most other charcoal, and it doesn't leave much ash behind. The charcoal may not be completely additive free, but it doesn't leave a strange aftertaste on your food, either.

There are no user reviews on Amazon, but on several other barbecue fan sites, consumers praised the briquettes. “I use this charcoal all of the time! It has a good flavor, and burns hot and clean,” wrote one reviewer on Smoking Meat Forums. “I use RO briquettes all the time. I love them. Can’t beat the price,” wrote another reviewer on BBQ-Brethern.

The best all-natural charcoal for grilling

Why you'll love them: The Weber Natural Hardwood Briquettes burn longer and hotter than lots of other charcoal.

Since 1952, Weber has been one of the country’s preeminent producers of both gas and charcoal grills, as well as grilling accessories. So when Weber introduced its very first briquettes in 2017, the barbecue world buzzed with excitement.

The briquettes are sold in a strong, 20-pound, weather-protected, and re-sealable bag. The hardwood of these all-natural briquettes is ground and pressed to create a super dense structure that is free of binders and chemicals. The most notable thing about these briquettes is their consistently large size. The bigger they are, the fewer you’ll need to use while grilling. This ensures consistent heat, prolongs grilling time, and is cost effective.

Buyers seem to love this charcoal, too. On Lowe's website, one reviewer wrote: “I have found this Hardwood Charcoal to burn longer and hotter than competitive brands. The briquettes are much denser, slightly larger and have a rich dark color. I would recommend this for charcoal grilling, or smoking with some Cherry Wood."

The reviewer at Mad Meat Genius, a popular site that regularly reviews grilling products, wrote: “We are very pleased with the performance and longevity of Weber charcoal briquettes. It passed our un-controlled experiment with flying colors. They performed stellar in both of our cooks. We can vouch and would recommend this product.”

If you don't like additives in your charcoal, Weber's Briquettes are a great choice for your grill.

Pros: Burns hot, burns fast, large size, has the Weber name behind it

Cons: Expensive

The best lump charcoal for grilling

Why you'll love it: Fogo's All Natural Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal burns hot and clean to leave your food with the lingering taste of oak wood.

Made from dense Central American hardwood trimmings, only hand selected pieces make it into every bag of Fogo's All natural Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal. Quick lighting, this large-sized charcoal is ready to grill within 15 minutes. Fogo, which means fire in several languages, is a restaurant-quality charcoal that burns very hot and imparts a mild, smoky flavor to your food. It contains no fillers and no chemicals and is perfect for low and slow cooking.

User reviews on Amazon are mostly positive, with consumers continually touting the large chunks of charcoal that burn slowly. “If charcoal was a car, this would be the Rolls Royce of charcoal,” wrote one reviewer. “This is my go to charcoal. Large pieces that burn slowly,” wrote another verified buyer. “Fantastic!!! What more can be said, this stuff is truly amazing! Super mellow taste of oak. Super easy to start and maintain and control your heat! All with NO Chemical taste,” wrote another.

Across the web, professional and semi-professional reviewers including those at The Wirecutter and the Naked Whiz, a popular charcoal reviewing site, give good marks to Fogo FHWC35LB 35-Pound All Natural Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal Bag, too.

If you want to try lump charcoal, there's none better than Fogo's.

Pros: Large lumps, burns hot, burns slowly, all natural, mellow flavor, low ash

Cons: Takes a while to get to achieve a high temperature; sometimes the lumps are so large they are hard to get out of the bag or to manage.
