We shopped at TJ Maxx and Ross to see which was a better discount store — and the winner was clear

Ross Stores

  • Discount stores such as TJ Maxx and Ross Stores are known to be one of the few bright spots in retail.
  • The two chains sell well-known brands at 20-60% off full prices and offer customers a bargain-hunt shopping experience.
  • Here's how the shopping experience at TJ Maxx and Ross Stores compares.

The American retail industry isn't dying — it's divided.

A recent survey by the management-consultancy firm Deloitte found that the most successful areas of retail were at the two extremes of the spectrum: high-end retailers and price-conscious stores. Those trying to follow a "jack of all trades" model are missing out.

The survey of 2,000 people found that only 20% of consumers were better off last year than they were in 2007 and that 80% had less money to spend on shopping than they did in the past.

Consumers are hungry for bargains, and discount retailers are booming.

After comparing two of the US's biggest dollar-store chains, Dollar Tree and Dollar General, we decided to put two of the best-known off-price chains to the test.

Ross Stores and TJ Maxx have a similar premise: offer a wide selection of well-known brands at discounted prices, providing customers a treasure-hunt shopping experience that's hard to replicate online.

In both cases, it's all about shopping in the store. While TJ Maxx has built out its online offering somewhat, Ross Stores has not — the only way to shop there is on foot.

Despite their similarities, Ross Stores has outpaced TJ Maxx in same-store sales growth. Ross Stores' same-store sales were up 4% last year, while Marmaxx — Marshalls and TJ Maxx — reported a modest 1% increase.

It may well come down to price. Citing the investment-management firm Cowen, Bloomberg reported in 2016 that the average item at TJ Maxx costs $14 to $15 compared with $10 at Ross.

Here's how the shopping experience compares.

SEE ALSO: We visited Dollar Tree and Dollar General to see which was a better store — and the winner was clear

Our first stop was Ross Stores in Center City, Philadelphia. Ross, the largest off-price retailer in the US, has 1,432 locations in 38 states.

Ross has been hailed as a "retail treasure" by analysts, but our first impression wasn't great.

The store was split into two sections: women's apparel on one side, and men's, kids, and homewares on the other.

At the front of the store, signs gently reminded shoppers not to open packages. It's instantly apparent that this is not going to be a high-end shopping experience.

Meet the man behind the Trump-Russia investigation: the special counsel Robert Mueller

Robert Mueller

Robert Mueller is leading the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, which on Thursday has officially gone on for a year.

That probe is also examining whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin, and if President Donald Trump has obstructed justice while in office.

In Washington, Mueller has a reputation for being a tenacious investigator. Both Republicans and Democrats welcomed his appointment last May with bipartisan backing.

But the increasing breadth and length of his investigation has irked many Trump supporters, and the president himself.

Mueller's colleagues, meanwhile, say he has proven his bipartisan bona fides over the years. After all, he served under both Republican and Democratic presidents as FBI director and as an attorney in the Department of Justice.

As the probe into Trump and his associates wages on, here's a look at Mueller's history:

All of the 'X-Men' movies, ranked from worst to best

$

xmenlist6

Back in 2000, what is now the modern superhero genre probably didn't seem possible. "Blade," about a half-vampire Marvel Comics anti-hero, was the closest audiences had at the time. That changed with "X-Men," which introduced a franchise that is still churning out movies.

In that sense, even though it's suffered from a confusing timeline in recent years, the "X-Men" series may be the original "cinematic universe," before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to be.

The next entry in this franchise comes to theaters this weekend with "Deadpool 2." It's hard to remember that the "Deadpool" movies are technically part of the "X-Men" franchise. But they are loosely connected to that universe built by Fox for nearly two decades.

As the Disney-Fox deal looms, it's impossible to predict where the franchise will be in the future. But for now we can expect "Deadpool 2" and both "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" and "The New Mutants" next year.

To prepare for "Deadpool 2," Business Insider has ranked all 10 "X-Men" movies from worst to best.

Below is every "X-Men" movie, ranked:

SEE ALSO: All 19 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, ranked from worst to best

10. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009)

A movie so bad it basically destroyed any plans Fox had for future "Origins" spin-offs, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is a monstrosity of a movie that is cluttered with useless characters (will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas shows up for some reason?) and a nonsensical storyline. It also had the audacity to cast Ryan Reynolds in a role he was born to play (Deadpool, before Deadpool was even cool) and sewed his mouth shut. Deadpool's nickname is "The Merc with a Mouth," and this movie sews his mouth shut. It is beyond comprehension how awful this movie is, but for an idea, I have a friend who saw a leaked version of the movie before special effects were finished and said that was infinitely more fun to watch.

9. "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006)

After director Bryan Singer left the third "X-Men" movie to make "Superman Returns" (not the greatest decision in hindsight), Brett Ratner stepped in to direct "X-Men: The Last Stand." The promise of the superb "X2's" ending, in which Jean Grey sacrifices herself but a phoenix silhouette hovers over the water as the screen fades to black, meant that the third movie had a lot to live up to. Turns out Ratner was not the guy to answer the call. "The Last Stand" presents a lot of good ideas, but ultimately fails to deliver on the only one that matters: The Dark Phoenix storyline that is an essential part of the X-Men comic books. To make matters worse, not only is the movie such a misfire, but Ellen Page recently accused Ratner of using homophobic and abusive language on the set. In conclusion, this movie is such a stain on the X-Men franchise that it's basically being ignored and Fox is trying it again with next year's "X-Men: Dark Phoenix."

8. "X-Men: Apocalypse" (2016)

I don't know who had the idea to cast a great actor like Oscar Isaac in a role that demanded he be covered in blue make-up the entire movie, but it was a bad idea. Unlike Josh Brolin's Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War," Isaac is miscast as the universe-decimating big blue alien. Bryan Singer came back to the "X-Men" franchise in full-force with "Days of Future Past," so it was disappointing he followed that up with this.

10 etiquette rules guests must follow at the royal wedding

$

kate middleton fascinator

  • The proper way to greet someone at a formal British occasion is "How do you do?"
  • The royal wedding dress code includes tights and hats for the daytime ceremony and floor-length dresses that cover the shoulders for the evening reception.
  • Dining etiquette, such as holding the fork and knife correctly, is essential.
  • Holding the pinky up while drinking tea is considered rude.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's upcoming royal wedding will bring together the British elite and high society (as well as some lucky commoners) for an event that will be broadcast around the world, so it's important for guests to be on their best behavior.

Royal expert Myka Meier of Beaumont Etiquette shared her knowledge with INSIDER regarding etiquette rules at formal occasions in British society, like a royal wedding.

Here are 10 rules that guests will be expected to follow.

The proper greeting when meeting someone is "How do you do?"

Meier said that while the correct formal greeting varies throughout Great Britain, in London you would say "How do you do?" The formal reply would simply be "How do you do."

As for gestures of greeting, the correct way to say hello depends on context.

"In the British culture, it’s a handshake when meeting someone in business or social circumstances," Meier said. "You could offend someone by hugging upon an initial greeting. In more social situations with those you already know, a cheek kiss may be appropriate. While it's one kiss in America, it's two kisses in the UK — always start with the right cheek in both the US and UK."

Women attending the wedding must wear hats.

"Hats are considered the most important accessory for a lady when dressing for a traditional British wedding," Meier said.

Women wearing hats is a tradition that dates back to before the 1950s, when women rarely showed their hair in public, according to the BBC

Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011 featured an eclectic display of fascinators. The upcoming royal wedding surely will, as well.

Pantyhose or tights are also essential for those wearing dresses.

Markle herself doesn't seem to be abiding by this rule just yet, as royal expert Victoria Arbiter previously told INSIDER that Markle appeared not to be wearing tights in her engagement photos. But at her wedding, guests wearing dresses will be expected to wear tights or stockings with them.

The best window air conditioners

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best window AC

The Insider Pick:

  • A good air conditioner can help make those hot summers much more bearable. The LG LW8016ER Air Conditioner is the best window AC you can buy, with its three cooling speeds and built-in dehumidifier.

We’re heading into summer, which means that things are going to start getting real hot, real soon – if they haven’t already. As such, it might be time to start looking for a new window-mounted air conditioner to keep your home nice and cool, so that you don’t roast over the summer months.

Of course, there are a ton of window air conditioners to choose from, and they’re not all worth buying. Some are simply lower quality and won’t last as long as others that are better-built and more energy-efficient.

There are a number of things to consider when you’re buying a window air conditioner, and you’ll want to think about them before you buy to ensure that you get the best quality. For starters, you’ll want to consider the air conditioner’s BTU – or “British Thermal Unit.” The higher the number here, the better the unit will be able to remove heat from the room. But a higher BTU also means it will likely consume a little more energy.

How big of a BTU rating do you need for your room?

Check out the list below to figure out the BTU rating you’ll need depending on how large your room is. Figures are courtesy of Lowes.

  • 150 to 350 sq ft: 5,000 to 8,000 BTU
  • 350 to 550 sq ft: 8,000 to 12,000 BTU
  • 550 to 1,050 sq ft: 12,000 to 18,500 BTU
  • 1,050 to 1,600 sq ft: 18,500 to 25,000 BTU

You’ll also want to think about the air conditioner’s energy efficiency rating, and how large it is. After all, if it’s too big, it may not fit in the space you have designated for it.

These are the best window air conditioners you can buy, no matter your needs:

Also check out our full guides to the best electric fans and the best portable air conditioners you can buy.

Updated on 05/17/2018 by Christian de Looper and Malarie Gokey: Removed out of stock ACs and added a new top pick, a new quiet(er) pick, and a hack to make your AC smart.

Read on in the slides below to check out the best window air conditioners you can buy and a fool-proof way to make your AC smart.

The best window air conditioner overall

Why you'll love it: The LG LW8016ER window AC can cool a 340-square-foot room, has energy-saving features, and offers plenty of settings for those who want control.

LG is a bit of a powerhouse in the window air conditioner space. Our previous top pick was an LG air conditioner, and so is our new one — the LG LW8016ER AC.

This air conditioner has an 8,000 BTU rating, and LG says it’ll cool a room up to 340 square feet in size, which should be more than enough for most people. LG says that the AC can dehumidify a room by up to 2.2 pints per hour. In other words, not only does this AC make the room cooler, but it takes some of the stickiness out of it, too.

Some air conditioners only have two settings — on and off. Thankfully, you have a little more control with the LG window AC. You’ll get three cooling speeds and three fan speeds, so you don’t have to go from 0-60 right away. On top of that, there’s an energy-saving setting, so if you don’t mind the AC taking a bit longer to cool the room, you’ll save some energy.

According to reviews, the air conditioner is even quieter than most window ACs, so while it’s probably not the quietest appliance you'll use, it's better than your average AC. The main downside is still the noise. If you want a truly quiet air conditioner, you’ll want to keep looking, and perhaps be willing to spend a little more cash.

Still, the experts at the Wirecutter also recommend this AC, and buyer reviews on Amazon are largely positive. Around 55% of the 300+ reviews are for 5 stars. — Christian de Looper

Pros: Inexpensive, rated for large rooms, energy-saving

Cons: Still loud, despite being quieter than some

Buy the LG LW8016ER on Amazon for $186.14 (originally $256.49)

The best window air conditioner with quiet(er) operation

Why you'll love it: The Frigidaire Gallery Quiet Temp 115V 8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner runs slightly quieter than others, making it great for your bedroom.

If you want a slightly quieter AC for your bedroom, Frigidaire's galley Quiet Temp AC is a great option. It's an 8,000 BTU AC, so it can cool rooms up to 350-sq. ft., which should be more than enough for most bedrooms.

Frigidaire says it runs at 44 decibels, though the Wirecutter pegged it at 54 decibels during its tests. The reviewers were fast to point out that it's still 6 to 8 decibels quieter than every other AC they tested. Frigidaire's AC also has a Sleep Mode that's meant to minimize sound while keeping you at a comfortable temperature for sleep.

The AC is also an Energy Star product, so it should help you save electricity and money in the long run if you use the Energy Saver mode. The included remote control makes it easy to adjust temperature, change the fan speed, and set timers.

There's only one buyer review on Walmart's site, but it's for five stars. The reviewer, named Eileen, writes, "Very, very quiet air conditioner plus does a terrific job of cooling. Well worth a few extra dollars." — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Quieter operation, 8,000 BTU is good for a large room, effective cooling, remote control

Cons: Pricey

Buy the Frigidaire Gallery Quiet Temp 115V 8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner at Walmart for $349.99

The best window air conditioner with 15,000 BTUs

Why you'll love it: The LG LW1516ER Air Conditioner doesn’t just offer great cooling modes and a high-quality dehumidifier, it’s also able to cool big rooms with up to 15,000 BTU.

If you’re looking for something better suited to large rooms, the LG LW1516ER might be the better option for you. While the other units on this list hover in the 5,000-8,000 BTU areas, the LG LW1516ER offers a hefty 15,000 BTU, and LG argues that means it’ll cool rooms up to a massive 800 sq. ft. That means it might be better suited to larger living rooms, or even rooms that aren’t in a home.

Apart from being great for large rooms, this unit offers three cooling settings, a remote control, an energy saving mode, and a 24-hour timer so you should be able to set it to perfectly suit your needs. It’s also able to dehumidify a room up to a massive 4 pints per hour, which is perfect to match those larger rooms. It even offers an auto restart feature in the event of a power failure.

Of course, being capable of cooling large rooms means the unit itself is also larger. It’ll sit in at 26-inches wide, almost 27-inches deep, and almost 17-inches high. It’s a little expensive, though not quite as expensive as the Haier we mentioned before, with its price of $400. — Christian de Looper

Pros: Able to cool large rooms, not too expensive, high-capacity dehumidifier

Cons: A little bulky

Buy the LG LW1516ER Air Conditioner from the Home Depot for $399.00

The 3 most commonly spoken languages in every New York City neighborhood

New York City Marathon

  • New York City includes dozens of neighborhoods across its five boroughs: Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx.
  • Those neighborhoods draws people from around the world, and a plethora of languages are spoken by residents.
  • Using Census data from the Minnesota Population Center, we found the three most commonly spoken languages in each NYC neighborhood.

People from all over the world come to live and work in New York City, and that shows up in the wide variety of languages spoken in the city.

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey provides a picture of several demographic, economic, and social characteristics of the US population. One of the questions on the survey asks respondents what language they mainly speak at home. Using data from the Minnesota Population Center's 2011-2015 ACS Integrated Public Use Microdata Series, we found the top three languages spoken in each New York City neighborhood.

For our working definition of neighborhood, we used the Census Bureau's Public Use Microdata Areas, which are designed to allow small-scale geographic analyses of individual-level ACS data. In New York City, these areas mostly correspond to the city's community districts, or groups of two community districts for areas with smaller populations, and so are a pretty good proxy for neighborhoods.

Here are the three most common languages spoken at home in each NYC neighborhood.

SEE ALSO: The most expensive college in every state, in one map

The most commonly spoken language in most neighborhoods is English.

Several neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and northern Manhattan and Queens have Spanish as the most common language spoken at home. Brooklyn Community District 13, covering Brighton Beach and Coney Island, has Russian as its most common language.

The second most commonly spoken language in most neighborhoods is Spanish.

Several neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn have other languages falling in the second-place spot.

Here's a closeup of Brooklyn and Queens, highlighting some of the second most common languages that aren't English or Spanish.

Pockets of Chinese and Russian show up as second most common languages, and Haitian or French Creole (marked as "Creole" on the map) is common in a large swath of east Brooklyn.

  • Amazon is the one-stop shop to buy everything from fresh groceries to clothes and furniture.
  • Walmart-owned Jet.com sells many of the same products as Amazon, though on a smaller scale.
  • Jet competes in a number of ways, including by offering free two-day shipping on orders over $35.
  • We compared what it's like to shop on Amazon and Jet and found that they each had advantages. Overall, we found Jet to be more shopper-friendly.

Amazon has become the go-to store to buy, well, everything.

Amazon has made it possible to order everything customers might need, including groceries, clothes, and furniture, all in one place. For $12.99 a month or $119 a year, Prime members get added bonuses on top of the frequent markdowns, like free two-day shipping and access to music and video streaming services.

But Walmart-owned shopping site Jet has been making strides to compete with the e-commerce giant, like offering daily deals and free two-day shipping without membership fees. Though Jet can't compete with Amazon when it comes to certain exclusive products like Echo devices, Kindles, and streaming services, it offers JetCash, which are rewards incentives that can be used as cash on the site. It also has a private-label brand called "Uniquely J," which is designed to attract millennials by creating environmentally friendly products in artist-designed packaging.

Even though products are sometimes listed in different quantities or under different categories, the websites have a huge overlap in what they sell. To see which of the two stores had better deals and was more user-friendly, we compared common items from different categories on each site to see which site had better deals, which site had better shipping and returns policies, and how easy each website was to use.

The prices were extremely similar on Amazon and Jet, but one of the online stores had a few clear advantages — see how they stack up:

SEE ALSO: We compared prices on best-selling items at Amazon and Home Depot to see who has the best deals on tools and paint — here's the verdict

The differences between Amazon and Jet were obvious right away. The Amazon homepage featured deals and products that were recommended based on products I've looked at before, alongside a Prime advertisement and other related ads. There were a ton of recommended products and drop-down menus.

Jet's homepage was much simpler. Fewer products were displayed, and there was nothing showing up based on other products I've viewed in the past. There were fewer menus to choose from, so I was less overwhelmed with options. The layout was pretty similar to Amazon.

Both sites had a ton of different categories, including fresh produce, electronics, clothing, makeup, and more. It was a bit of an information overload.

Mueller's Russia investigation began 1 year ago — here's where it's headed now

Robert Mueller

WASHINGTON (AP) — It was one year ago Thursday when Robert Mueller, the former FBI director, was appointed as special counsel to take over the Justice Department's investigation into possible coordination between Russia and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

The 12 months since have yielded a flurry of criminal indictments and guilty pleas, tense court appearances, angry tweets from the president and speculation over what the ever-taciturn Mueller already knows and what he'll investigate next.

Trump noted the anniversary with an early morning tweet making clear his frustration.

"Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History...and there is still No Collusion and No Obstruction. The only Collusion was that done by Democrats who were unable to win an Election despite the spending of far more money!"

Hundreds of pages of court filings, and public statements from witnesses, have to an extent pulled back the curtain on an extraordinarily secretive investigation. But much remains hidden from view.

A look at the last year and what may lie ahead:

DON'T MISS: Senate intel panel breaks with Trump and House Republicans, concludes Russia meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump and hurt Clinton

What is Mueller investigating?

There's no doubt Mueller's investigation is far reaching, but at its core, prosecutors have remained focused on two central questions:

On the anniversary of Robert Mueller taking over the investigation into possible Russian collusion in the 2016 election, AP Reporter Eric Tucker reflects on the case: who has been questioned, who has been charged and what is yet to come.

Did the Trump campaign collude with the Kremlin to tip the 2016 presidential election in the Republican candidate's favor?

And has President Donald Trump tried to obstruct the investigation since taking office through actions including firing FBI Director James Comey and badgering Attorney General Jeff Sessions over his recusal from the Russia probe?

Who has been questioned so far?

A veritable who's who of current and former White House officials, as well as foreign businessmen and top campaign and transition staffers.

Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was questioned last fall about former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn. Trump's White House counsel, Don McGahn, has been in to see Mueller's team, as have former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former communications director Hope Hicks, former chief strategist Steve Bannon, California real estate developer and longtime Trump friend Tom Barrack — and dozens of other witnesses.

In a reflection of the wide-angle nature of the investigation, and its ongoing examination of foreign influence on the Trump administration, a grand jury in Washington has heard from a Lebanese-American businessman who joined a 2016 meeting at Trump Tower involving top Trump aides and the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

A Russian American lobbyist who attended a June 2016 meeting at which Trump's eldest son expected to receive damaging information about his father's opponent, Hillary Clinton, also has provided testimony.

Who has been charged?

A total of 19 people and three Russian companies have either been indicted or pleaded guilty to criminal charges.

Among those charged are Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who is awaiting trial in Virginia and the District of Columbia, and Flynn, who pleaded guilty in December to lying to the FBI and has been cooperating with Mueller's investigation. Other cooperators include deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and former campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

A Dutch lawyer who lied to the FBI is serving a 30-day prison sentence, and a California man who unwittingly sold bank accounts to Russians has also pleaded guilty.

The single largest criminal case involves 13 Russians and three Russian companies, accused of conspiring together to fund a hidden but effective social media campaign to exploit American divisions on race and other hot-button topics as well as favor Trump over Clinton.

These $2,000 devices designed to mine Ethereum are selling out — and critics say they could weaken faith in cryptocurrency altogether

Ethereum ether cryptocurrency

So far, the device of choice to mine the ethereum cryptocurrency has been the traditional computer graphics card.

That could soon change when specialized devices commonly known as "ASICs" are introduced in July, which are much more efficient at mining cryptocurrencies than graphics cards.

Currently, only one company called Bitmain is producing ASICs designed for mining ethereum. Each devices cost $2,150 and they're sold out at the time of writing.

Developers behind the ethereum cryptocurrency are worried about the introduction of ASIC devices, according to a story on Bloomberg. ASICs "could have a negative impact on the Ethereum community and therefore on Ethereum price," said Sam Doctor, a managing director at Fundstrat Global Advisors who spoke with Bloomberg.

Check out what ASICs are, and why ethereum developers are concerned:

SEE ALSO: How to make money mining bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies without knowing anything about it

First of all, a quick recap of what cryptocurrency mining entails and why people do it.

When someone is mining for cryptocurrency, they're making their computers verify digital cryptocurrency transactions, like a ledger. Verifying these transactions involves solving incredibly complex mathematical problems. The problems are so complex that your computer is most likely just a small contributor towards solving the problem – it's a mere "node" among several other nodes.

Every computer that's verifying cryptocurrency transaction is part of the ledger, which helps make cryptocurrencies become decentralized compared to the centralized nature of traditional banking. Decentralization is one of the main selling points for cryptocurrencies.

The allure of tasking your computer to solve these problems and verify crypto transactions is getting rewarded with a small bit of the cryptocurrency itself. Built-up over time, that reward could be pretty tempting, especially when the price of a cryptocurrency skyrockets, like bitcoin did in early 2017.

A miner is rewarded because the process of verifying crypto transactions actually uses up a lot of electricity, which can run up your electricity bill quite considerably. Without some kind of incentive, there would be few reasons to pay higher electricity bills to mine cryptocurrency.

The best way to mine ethereum so far is to use computer-graphics cards.

The standard graphics card is primarily designed to render the visuals and graphics of pretty much anything you see on your computer screen. That includes your operating system whether it's Windows 10 or macOS, your apps, and video games. Graphics cards are also used by professionals for photo and video editing.

These graphics cards are widely available consumer products used by pretty much anyone with a need for one. They can be bought at regular tech stores like Best Buy or at online stores like Newegg.

It also turns out that graphics cards are good at solving the complex math problems to verify a crypto transaction. But they're not as good as ASIC mining devices.

ASICs are basically devices that are designed to do one thing, and they're really good at it.

ASIC stands for "application-specific integrated circuit." In other words, an ASIC is a device that's designed for a specific purpose or use. By focusing on a single application, ASICs are often better than other devices that are designed around a broader set of applications.

With that in mind, an ASIC can actually be any electronic device with a specific application, not just a cryptocurrency-mining device. Still, dedicated devices used for mining cryptocurrency are generally known as ASICs.

ASIC-mining devices are generally rectangular devices with barely any styling. Inside the utilitarian metal chassis are components that are much more efficient than traditional graphics cards at solving the math problems to verify crypto transactions because they're purely designed to mine cryptocurrencies. Traditional graphics cards have a much broader job description than ASIC devices, like rendering the graphics for visually intensive jobs like video games and video editing, and so they're not as efficient at mining cryptocurrencies as mining ASICs.

You can think of it like the difference between soccer cleats and regular sneakers. Sneakers are extremely versatile – you can wear them pretty much anywhere and even play soccer with them. Soccer cleats, on the other hand, wouldn't be comfortable for taking a walk. They're specifically designed to offer traction and control on the slick grass of a soccer field, and they'll offer much better performance for playing soccer, if that's your intention.

The best portable air conditioners you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

portable ac 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Portable air conditioners are sometimes the only option to get the cool air you need, but they tend to be expensive. The Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner stands out from the crowd because it's powerful, relatively quiet, and doubles as a fan or dehumidifier.

Whether you endure hot weather all year long or only for a few months, when it is hot, humid, and sticky, air conditioning (AC) can become necessary to keep your home comfortable. To get the proper amount of AC, people often turn to portable air conditioners, which, like central and window units, can cool your house down.

Portable ACs are easy to move and install. In some cases, portable air conditions are the only option in homes or apartments where there is no central AC and window units are not allowed, or simply won’t fit. As an added bonus, out of all the types of air conditioners you can buy, portable units generally save you the most in your electrical bills.

Most portable air conditioners are broken into two categories based on their configuration: Single hose and dual hose.

  • Single-hose AC units use the same hose as both intake and exhaust for air. While single hose units will still cool the space you’re using them in, they will have to work harder to do so, meaning they are not as efficient as a dual-hose air conditioner. On the plus side, they tend to be cheaper and are a perfectly adequate solution for smaller rooms, such as a small bedroom or studio apartment.
  • Dual-hose AC units have one intake hose and one exhaust hose. Because you have to two separate hoses, these types of portable air conditioner are usually more energy efficient, generally cooling a room approximately 40% quicker than single-hose units, and they are the preferred choice if you’re looking to cool a larger room.

All portable ACs come with window venting kits to help you ensure that the cold air stays in and the exhaust stays outside with all that heat. You'll also need to look for ACs with self-evaporating technology that gets rid of the condensation produced by the unit. Otherwise, you'll have to empty a tank regularly.

With portable units, you hear noise from the pumps, fans, and motors that make up the unit’s moving mechanical components. Since all portable AC units make some sort of noise, it’s just a matter of deciding how much noise is comfortable to you. Most manufacturers are continually making upgrades to decrease the noise level of their units and if it’s an especially quiet unit, this information will be a highlighted selling point in the product description.

The picks below are based on online research, ratings from tech analysts and experts in the field, authoritative, reliable product testing and ranking sites, along with Amazon ratings and customer reviews. We took price into consideration to accommodate various budgets, as well.

wedding

If you're planning a summer wedding, there's a good chance you have a long "to-do" list ranging from "what's on the menu" to "get in shape...fast." And whether you're the bride, the groom, or even part of the wedding party, feeling good and looking fantastic for the big day is likely on your mind.

With so much to do and so little time to do it in, you might be wondering what workout will get you ready for the big day. INSIDER talked to Daily Burn Trainer, Cece Marizu, about which exercises you should pick when your time is tight.

Total body workouts are all the rage lately, and for good reason. By combining exercises that strengthen all of the major muscles in your body, you can get your heart rate up and burn some serious calories.

To get ready for the big day, Marizu put together a list of the 10 best exercises to get you in wedding shape. She recommended pairing up four or six of the moves and then repeating in sets, which gives you a great total body workout.

"For instance, start movement prep with some resistance band work— and also use it to work on external rotation for the shoulders. Then move into squats, lat pull downs, kb swings or deadlifts, push-ups, and finish with a complex lunge set," she explained.

For maximum results, perform two to three sets of each exercise, and make sure to vary the rep range. The first few weeks, you might do 12-15 reps per set, and then drop the reps and increase the weight for weeks three and four (8-10 reps).

You can also throw in a few cardio sessions each week. Aim for three to four days, of 20-40 minute cardio workouts, such as running, biking, rowing, or the stair climber.

Here are Marizu's choices for the 10 best strength training exercises to get you in summer wedding shape fast.

Front loaded weighted squats:

Front squats allow you to activate the front and back of your lower body by loading the front with the bar. The arms also have to do extra work to keep the weight up.

Lat pulldowns:

You can do narrow or widelat pulldowns, but Marizu said doing lat pulldowns are great to reset posture and give great muscles definition to the arms and back.

Push-up variations:

Bodyweight work is so key, and sincepush-ups are pretty much like doing a moving plank, they train your core from head to toe.

Prince Harry Meghan Markle engagement photos

  • Prince Harry's fiancée Meghan Markle is an actress on the television drama "Suits," which films in Toronto, Canada.
  • Markle may be a millionaire and soon-to-be royal, but she doesn't live a lavish lifestyle.
  • Markle previously rented a modest home and car in Toronto, and favors affordable fashion brands.

Prince Harry's fiancée Meghan Markle isn't a commoner — but she's not yet royalty either.

Sure, the 36-year-old actress and Los Angeles native was earning close to half a million dollars a year starring in the USA Network drama "Suits," but she didn't live in the lap of luxury.

Up until her recent engagement to Prince Harry, Markle rented a three-bedroom bungalow in Toronto, Canada, and leased an Audi SUV. And before she landed the role on "Suits," she was juggling a few side hustles to make ends meet.

Below, take a peek inside the surprisingly relatable life of Meghan Markle:

DON'T MISS: Meghan Markle could wear a custom-designed tiara worth nearly $700,000 on her wedding day — here's how much the tiaras of other British royal brides are worth

With an estimated net worth of $5 million, she's rich — but she doesn't act like it.

Markle has starred on the television drama "Suits" since 2011 and earns about $50,000 per episode, according to knownetworth.com and Town & Country Magazine.

But the actress also makes around $80,000 a year from sponsorships and endorsement deals, bringing her annual salary to about $450,000. Celebritynetworth.com estimates Markle is worth $5 million.

Markle rented out a bungalow in Toronto — where a 3-bedroom goes for $1,770 a month on average — for part of the year while filming 'Suits.'

"Suits" shoots eight months out of the year in Toronto. During production, Markle rented out a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a private backyard garden in the Seaton Village of Toronto.

Back in 2013, the self-proclaimed "California girl"told Esquire, "I am an adopted Canuck now."

According to Numbeo, the cost of a three-bedroom rental in Toronto, outside the city center, is $1,770 a month, but it's unknown exactly how much Markle was paying.

The couple who owned the home bought it for $508,000 a decade ago, and recently sold it for nearly $1.4 million after Markle moved out.

While she was auditioning for acting roles before landing 'Suits,' Markle maintained a 'super-lucrative' side job writing calligraphy invitations, she told Esquire.

"I've always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well,"Markle told Esquire. "What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn't wait tables. I did calligraphy for the invitations for, like, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton's wedding."

Pre "Suits," Markle also worked as a briefcase holder on "Deal or No Deal," which she calls a "learning experience ... [that] helped me to understand what I would rather be doing."

Around the world, coastal cities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to sea-level rise. Some future-looking architects and city planners believe that floating neighborhoods — in which buoyed homes could rise with water levels to avoid flooding — as a possible solution.

An Italian architecture firm called Lazzarini Design Studio has created a conceptual design for a floating city, dubbed Wayaland. The plan calls for luxury pyramid-shaped houses powered by solar energy, which CEO Pierpaolo Lazzarini hoes to build off the coast of the United Arab Emirates or Italy.

But Wayaland still in a very early phase of the design process. This month, the firm launched a crowdfunding campaign to build the first pyramid, which it expects will cost around $420,000. According to the campaign, the first investors could choose to become "citizens" of Wayaland if its home country chooses to recognize the development as an official city.

Take a look at the concept below.

SEE ALSO: San Francisco's housing crisis is so dire that nearly 7,000 people applied for 95 affordable apartments

Lazzarini Design Studio envisions Wayaland as a city of 20 floating pyramids.

There would be 10 homes, three hotels with a total of 20 suites, two restaurants, and five smaller buildings for other uses still to be determined.

One of those pyramids could contain a floating greenhouse, according to the early plans.

Meghan Markle could wear a custom-designed tiara worth nearly $700,000 on her wedding day — here's how much the tiaras of other British royal brides are worth

$

meghan markle prince harry

  • The world debates whether Meghan Markle will wear a tiara during her wedding to Prince Harry.
  • Queen Elizabeth II has one of the world's best jewel collections from which to loan Markle a tiara.
  • It's speculated the future Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales could wear the Strathmore Rose Tiara or the Spencer Tiara.
  • Markle could also wear a custom-designed tiara, which one expert says would cost about $687,360.

Will she or won't she?

Besides the wedding dress, one of the biggest speculations regarding the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is whether the future Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales will walk down the aisle at Windsor Castle in true royal fashion — donning a dazzling tiara

If Markle does opt for this regal look, she has plenty of diamonds and gems to choose from. Queen Elizabeth II has a famed, well stocked royal collection of tiaras — one of the best in the world.

The Queen lent the Queen Mother's Cartier Halo Tiara to Kate Middleton as a "something borrowed" for the Duchess' wedding to Prince William. If tradition dictates anything, she'll also loan a princess' ultimate treasure to her future granddaughter-in-law.

While it's not expected that Markle will wear the same tiara as the Duchess of Cambridge, rumors are circulating about what possible tiaras she could wear — such as the Strathmore Rose Tiara or Princess Diana's Spencer Tiara. The latter would be fitting considering Markle's engagement ring contains two diamond stones from Princess Diana's collection, and that she and Harry plan to honor his mother on the big day.

Then again, she and Harry are a modern-day couple — she could also have her own tiara made for her.

Whether Markle goes for an heirloom tiara or a custom tiara, there's no denying the jewels and metals that will sparkle atop her head go for a pretty penny.

We took a look at some of the most famous weddings in the British royal family and their equally famous tiaras — and just how much those tiaras might be worth.

SEE ALSO: Meghan Markle will have loads of tiaras to choose from on her wedding day — and she could pick one worn by Princess Diana

DON'T MISS: The royal wedding is a month away — here's how much Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expected to spend on their big day

Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne — Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara

When Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) married Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947, she sparkled underneath the Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara. It was gifted from Queen Mary to her daughter-in-law, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who loaned it to Elizabeth as a "something borrowed." In tune with tradition, the tiara was then loaned to Elizabeth's daughter, Princess Anne, to wear as she tied the knot to Mark Phillips.

This dazzler is actually the product of dismantled jewelry — it's comprised of 47 diamond bars using diamond stones taken from a necklace Queen Victoria gifted to Queen Mary. Jeweler Garrard & Co. set the stones in gold and silver and separated the bars with smaller diamond spikes.

There's no word on its value, but a 0.5 carat diamond averages around $1,500 while a 2-carat diamond can range from $18,000 to $21,000, depending on cut and clarity.

Princess Margaret — Poltimore Tiara

Princess Margaret departed from tradition and wore a tiara that wasn't already part of the royal collection, acquiring it shortly before her wedding to Lord Snowdon in 1960. The Poltimore Tiara, another Garrard creation, boasts cushion-shaped and old-cut diamond clusters and diamond-set scroll motifs surmounted by old-cut diamond terminals, all mounted in silver and gold.

It was auctioned for £5,500 (roughly $7,570) at the time it fell into Princess Margaret's hands, and was recently sold at a 2006 auction for £926,400 (around $1,275,154) — about four times its estimate.

Princess Diana — Spencer Tiara

When marrying Prince Charles in 1981, Princess Diana donned a tiara not from the royal treasure troves, but from her family's own aristocratic archives — the Spencer Tiara. This diamond encrusted piece shaped into tulips, stars, and scrolls belonged to her father and was worn by her mother and sisters on their wedding days.

This dazzler is made of a variety of other jewelry — the central portion was part of a wedding present to Lady Cynthia Hamilton (Diana's grandmother) when she married Albert, Viscount Althorp; the topper was given to Cynthia by Albert's great aunt, Lady Sarah Isabella Spencer; and the ends come from a tiara once belonging to Frances Manby, the last known Viscountess of Montagu. The current version was reportedly finalized in the 1930s.

There is no estimate on how much it's worth, but a similar headpiece with 800 cut diamonds and an estimated weight of 48 carats was recently sold by the Spencer family for $225,000.

5 reasons why Amazon needs to save 'The Expanse,' an acclaimed series canceled by Syfy after 3 seasons

$

the expanse

When fans cry out for someone to save their show, the narrative is usually built around somebody “not getting it.“ The network, the studios, or some bean counter or idiotic executive just can’t recognize the genius of the program that they’ve killed and the heartbreak they’ve caused. But that’s not what’s happened to “The Expanse.”

Coming into the back half of their third season, the show has a growing sense of mastery, fascinating world-building, and a commitment to tackling difficult questions in an ethically-murky universe. It took a little bit to find its stride, but now “The Expanse” is firing on all thrusters.

Alas, like so many of its characters, the show has found itself on the short end of a bad deal. SyFy cancelled the program this month, not for creative reasons but because the structure of their deal with producers Alcon Entertainment only gives the network revenue from the broadcast window — and in the current television landscape, broadcast revenue from a basic cable channel like SyFy seems to be worth about as much as a bowl of red kibble on Ceres, sasa ke?

But while every canceled show gets a plea for another distributor to swoop in and save it, in this case there’s actually a better-than-average case to be made for “The Expanse” to get rescued by a streaming outlet — one in particular.

Here are several reasons, both creative and business-focused, as to why Amazon should swoop in and save “The Expanse.”

SEE ALSO: The 10 most popular TV shows of the year so far, according to Nielsen ratings

A lot of the show’s audience seems to already watch it through Amazon.

When Syfy first made their deal for “The Expanse,” it was one of the first big components of the channel re-embracing its genre roots. And in 2014, it probably was a smart play for a network going in a new direction to hedge their bets, and let a shaky streaming platform that doubled as a glorified home shopping network pick up most of the tab. But in 2018, keeping control of the streaming rights has become the much more valuable piece of the pie.

Amazon is getting the bulk of the show’s audience over a long window, and SyFy is left with a very narrow period of time to make their money. Contrast this with the distribution plan for “Star Trek Discovery” — CBS kept the streaming in-house, going so far as to build their own platform around it, in order to hold on to these very lucrative rights.

We don’t know the actual ratings for “The Expanse” on Amazon, but it appears to be performing well for them. How much better could it do if they also had the first window and controlled all the rights? Especially if they did a better job of helping their viewers find the best quality versions of the episodes.

The show actually works better as a bingeing experience.

We’re early enough in the binge era to still be figuring out what kinds of shows work better in bulk and which are better with a lag in-between episodes. After a recent rewatch of the first two seasons on Amazon, it became clear that its incredibly detailed storyworld and tightly serialized narrative mean that the show works better in a binge environment.

In a time when a lot of streaming shows use their lack of constraints to make overlong and turgidly-paced episodes, “The Expanse” manages to balance its serious themes with brisk pacing, making it very easy to say “I’ll just watch one more.”

There’s so much story left to tell.

The novel series on which the show is based will have its eighth installment released later this year. Along with several interstitial novellas and short stories, there is a massive story being told here — and the show has barely scratched the surface. While the seasons don’t track exactly according to the books, the show is currently around the middle of the second novel.

There are so many twists and turns up ahead, and book readers know that the show has been carefully and delicately planting the seeds for later storylines. Imagine if “Game of Thrones” has been canceled before the Red Wedding? This is roughly where “The Expanse” is on the long arc of its tale.

Here is Michael Jordan's 56,000-square foot house in Chicago and why it is still on the market after 6 years

Michael Jordan house

Michael Jordan's enormous house in Chicago is still on the market after six years despite cutting the price nearly in half and still paying more than $100,000 each year in property taxes.

The house was originally listed for $29 million and has every bell and whistle you can think of. There's a pool with a grass island in the middle of it, a door from the Playboy Mansion, a table based on the streets of Baghdad, and MJ-branded golf flags.

Below we take a closer look at the house and why it is struggling to find a buyer. Most images are from footage provided by Concierge Auctions.

Tony Manfred contributed to this post.

The 56,000 square-foot, 7-acre compound from the air.

The gate to get in, fittingly.
