11 people share stories about their first time having sex — and you'll totally relate to the awkwardness

Losing your virginity is a big deal. It's not uncommon to have all sorts of romantic and exciting fantasies of how your first time will play out. But for most people, the reality is that their first time having sex was less than perfect.

One reason may be that the average American loses their virginity at age 17, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And, because this only represents heterosexual (penile/vaginal) intercourse, and the definition of "virginity" varies from individual to individual, the average age may be even younger.

It makes sense that with lack of experience, nerves, and some pretty skewed views of what sex actually looks like, that people's first times are usually not so great or not what they expected.

Reddit users shared some of their awkward, funny, and downright embarrassingstories about losing their virginity. Of course, these examples of first times are just for fun, as we can't independently authenticate the stories.

1. It took seven attempts and 16 hours.

"My boyfriend is in the Navy and I still live with my parents, so when he had a free weekend we took advantage of the situation and booked a hotel together for the night. He put about 1/4 of himself in and I felt like I was getting stabbed with a piece of wood down there. We spent almost the whole night trying to get it in. Every time he would insert himself a little more and he'd have to pull out because it hurt me so much.

It took about seven attempts and 16 hours to get him fully inside me. We both felt bad when we left because we left the room a mess. Blood on the sheets, condom wrappers everywhere, etc. but we didn't think to bring cash for tip." - Redditor xmuhhree

2. They were caught by a cop.

"I drove like four hours and did it in the back of a car. We were caught by a cop and being 16, the cop called my parents. I had stolen my dad's car to get there. I had four hours of blue balls on a snowy interstate to figure out what my dad was going to do to me." - Anonymous redditor

3. They got caught by a sibling — and reacted poorly.

"Her brother walked in, and for some reason I quickly grabbed my phone and pretended I was texting. I didn't even think to cover up or hide or anything, I was just lying on my back fiddling with my phone while my girlfriend tried to rectify the situation. I always pretend to be texting or doing something on my phone when in an awkward situation, and because I'm a moron I guess I thought it would work then as well. Eugh." - Redditor HMacyFan4Eva

26 of the most devastating TV and movie breakups

ross and rachel break up friends

Movies and TV shows provide a considerable amount of couples that fans become obsessed with, but they also leave viewers devastated when a favorite couple breaks up. After becoming emotionally invested in the fictional love lives of characters, it's heartbreaking to see the couples that you were rooting for decide to part ways.

Here are some of the most devastating TV and movie relationships.

Ross and Rachel —"Friends"

Ross and Rachel's relationship can best be described as a roller coaster, because it had constant highs and lows. Over the course of 10 seasons, the couple dated other people, broke up, and rekindled their relationship. Their relationship took a hit on season three, when Ross started getting jealous of Rachel spending more time at work with her co-worker, Mark, than with him. Thinking they were on a break and Ross was so upset, he slept with a woman who worked at a nearby copy store, Chloe.

The next morning, Ross got a message from Rachel where she professed her love for him and they seemingly fixed the rough patch from the previous day. However, Rachel didn't know that Ross slept with someone else, and when she did find out from Gunther, it was one of the saddest moments in the show.

Ross begged Rachel to stay with him, but she couldn't get past what he did.

"It doesn't matter what you say or what you do, Ross. It's just changed everything forever," Rachel said.

They did eventually end up together — because as Phoebe said, they're each other's lobsters— but that scene scarred Ross and Rachel fans forever.

Olivia and Fitz — "Scandal"

One of the biggest storylines on "Scandal" involves Olivia's relationship with Fitz. Fans care deeply about their romance, so when they broke up, people demanded a proper reason — and they got one.

When the cast and creator attended a panel discussion, Shonda Rhimes was asked about why she decided to break up Fitz and Olivia.

"Olivia is on a journey," Rhimes explained. "She has been on a journey since we started. It's interesting to me that it's a romance, that her primary story is a romance — that's what you've seen. But to me, her primary story has been discovering herself."

She added: "I'm happy that you have fallen in love with Fitz because that's the journey that Olivia went on. She got the fantasy and then discovered the fantasy wasn't real. That doesn't mean she doesn't love Fitz, but it means Olivia does not know who she is yet."

Even though the breakup was hard for fans to deal with, this seems like a great explanation as to why "Olitz" had to end.

Stefan and Elena — "The Vampire Diaries"

Fans of "The Vampire Diaries" are all too familiar with the love triangle that played out over the course of several seasons. In the heated debate over who Elena should end up with, viewers took sides, choosing to be on "team Damon" or "team Stefan."

On season one, Elena and Stefan started dating and it was a sweet relationship that you couldn't help but root for. Stefan was a gentleman who swept Elena off her feet, while Damon was the bad boy who caused unnecessary drama. Even though "Stelena" stuck together when things got complicated, Elena decided to break up with Stefan because she thought she was becoming too focused on their relationship and neglecting others.

When she told him "it's over" and they both started crying, all the "Stelena" shippers of the world also cried.

Step aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's aircraft carrier that's considered to be one of the worst in the world

A photo taken from a Norwegian surveillance aircraft shows Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov in international waters off the coast of Northern Norway on October 17, 2016.

Russia's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, is one of the five worst carriers in the world, according to The National Interest.

In October 2016, the Kuznetsov was sailing to Syria through the English Channel on a combat deployment when it was spotted belching thick clouds of black smoke throughout its entire journey.

"The main problem with the ship is that is has a very problematic propulsion system," Dmitry Gorenburg, a senior research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses, previously told Business Insider. "It's just unreliable."

Before it was sent back to the yards for repairs, the Kuznetsov was always accompanied by a special tugboat in case of breakdowns, and the plumbing was reportedly so bad that the majority of its toilets didn't work.

It's currently being refitted at Russia's 35th Ship Repairing Yard in Murmansk, and won't be ready until 2021.

Check it out below:

Kuznetsov-class carriers are about 932 feet long, 237 feet wide and 212 feet high. They also have a maximum displacement of about 58,000 tons.

Kuznetsov-class carriers are powered by eight turbo-pressurized boilers, four steam turbines, and six diesel generators, bringing the carrier to a maximum speed of about 33 mph.

It also has a sea endurance of 45 days, and an operating range of 3,850 miles to 8,417 miles depending on the speed.

Why you don't need to upgrade to the OnePlus 6 if you already have the OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T

oneplus phones

Now that OnePlus has announced its latest and best smartphone to date, you might be wondering if it's time to upgrade if you have an older OnePlus model like the OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T.

The short answer is "probably not."

The OnePlus 6 does bring 2018 specs and an improved camera, but your OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T is still a top performer, even compared to the OnePlus 6.

Check out why you don't need to upgrade to the OnePlus 6 if you already have the OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T:

SEE ALSO: Why the OnePlus 6 doesn't have wireless charging even though almost every other high-end smartphones does

All three phones look nearly identical.

The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T have nearly identical metal backs. The 8GB RAM model of the OnePlus 6 has a glass back with a matte texture that looks nearly identical to the metal finish from previous OnePlus devices.

The 6GB RAM model of the OnePlus 6, meanwhile, has a glossy glass back that clearly looks different from the metal backs on previous OnePlus smartphones.

On the front, the only major difference is the bezel sizes.

It's true that the OnePlus 5 has significantly larger bezels than the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6. But you'd have to ask yourself if your ready to spend a minimum of $530 for slightly better performance and narrower bezels.

The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are still top performers.

The OnePlus 5 and 5T run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor, which was the top mobile chip turning the wheels inside the top smartphones of 2017. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 6 runs on the newer Snapdragon 845 chip from Qualcomm.

On paper, the Snapdragon 845 is a faster chip than the 835, but I don't feel a significant difference in speed when using the OnePlus 5/5T compared to the OnePlus 6.

15 royal family travel secrets you probably never knew

queen elizabeth

They must learn how to greet people in multiple languages

As representatives of the United Kingdom and the British monarchy, it is essential that each royal learns the basic greetings in each country’s native language before they visit. "The internal palace aids will always be on hand to prepare each royal before an important visit," says Myka Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette. "It is the correct protocol to practice the etiquette of the country or culture you are visiting, in order to show respect, so each royal knows how to make the best first impression." Check out these 14 other etiquette rules that every royal must follow.

They pack supplies of their own blood

A personal blood bag doesn’t usually make your packing checklist for trips, but for the royals anything is possible. According to the "Telegraph," the queen and her son Prince Charles always bring their own personal bags of blood with them to countries where the blood supply is questionable. But in order to do a blood transfusion, you need to have a doctor on hand, which is why a Royal Navy doctor accompanies every royal on his or her trip for emergencies.

They take extremely short trips

From a commoner’s point-of-view, the royals have a pretty cool job that lets them fly to countries all across the globe from Australia to Sweden. But the reality is that they don’t get to sightsee as much as you’d think. If anything, these fun getaways are nothing more than your average business trip. "Touring the world meeting heads of state and being shown cultural treasures sounds like a wonderful life," Gordon Rayner, a royal tour veteran reporter, told the "Telegraph.""Yet I have no envy for the royal family. Their visits to world-famous sites rarely last more than 40 minutes."

10 foods dietitians say you should avoid when you're sick

foods to avoid when youre sick 2

Mom's chicken soup, a glass of orange juice, and a sleeve of saltine crackers may sound pretty appetizing when you're under the weather, but you'd actually be shocked to know that some of our favorite sick day foods can actually do more harm than good. This is true, especially since some of these classic items can only make dehydration and inflammation in the body even worse.

To determine which go-to "comfort foods" are really worth ditching when you're ill, INSIDER spoke to a handful of dietitians to set the record straight on 10 foods they would never eat themselves while sick. Here are some of the items they recommend avoiding next time your temperature spikes.

1. Ditch the refined sugar.

Registered dietitian Sharon Palmer recommends passing on any foods with refined sugar when you aren't feeling 100%, as sugar can potentially increase inflammation in the body and reduce the ability for white blood cells to function effectively. This means while sucking on popsicles and eating ice cream may feel good, it might not actually be making you feel better.

She suggests sticking with nutrient-rich foods (think fresh fruits and vegetables) to help supply valuable nutrients to your diet in order to boost up your immune system.

2. Avoid alcohol at all costs.

A hot toddy may be appealing when you're plagued with the chills, but Brooke Alpert, registered dietitian and author of "The Diet Detox"recommends avoiding alcohol whenever you're feeling run down. She told INSIDER that alcohol can cause dehydration which can be harmful, especially when you're sick.

She also noted that alcohol can also interfere with any antibiotics you may be taking, which can cause damage to your stomach and liver. To avoid unwanted dehydration, make sure you are consuming clear and hydrating liquids while sick.

3. Scale back on the caffeine.

Caffeine may help ward away any morning grogginess if you were up coughing all night, but it's another thing Alpert avoids when she's sick, as she explained that caffeinated beverages tend to be very dehydrating to the body.

"I allow myself that one cup in the morning, but aside from that, caffeine is off limits for the rest of the day when I'm under the weather," Alpert told INSIDER. "Not only are caffeinated beverages very dehydrating to the body, but drinking these beverages as a replacement for hydrating drinks puts you even further behind on your overall hydration status."

7 ways people raise their kids around the world that US parents could learn from

  • Parenting looks different in every culture around the world.
  • There is no perfect, fool-proof way to raise children, but there are certain parenting strategies that other cultures implement that the US can adopt, like teaching children about optimism.
  • Here are 7 things people do to raise their kids in other countries that the US could learn from.

There really is no perfect, fool-proof way to raise children, according to Mei-Ling Hopgood, author of “How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm: And Other Adventures in Parenting.

Parents do the best they can, which is different for everyone based on culture, values, and beliefs, but there's no "best" way to do X, Y, or Z in parenting, Hopgood told Business Insider.

What matters most is choosing parenting strategies and advice that work for you and your family. You can certainly adopt different ideas from different cultures, said Hopgood, who is a mother herself. She spent lots of time researching parenting strategies across the world for her book. “I took what I wanted and left what didn’t seem to fit me,” she said.

Here are a few unique strategies used to raise children across the world that you might want to adopt as part of your parenting routine.

SEE ALSO: There are 4 styles of parenting, but one raises more successful kids than the rest, according to a psychotherapist

1. In Denmark, parents reframe negative situations into positive ones

Danish parents often reframe negative emotions or events more positively in order to teach their children about optimism, according to “The Danish Way of Parenting.” Instead of telling children where they need to improve, they focus on fostering positivity in their children by showing them how they can improve upon what they’re already good at.

2. In the Polynesian islands, older children take care of younger children

In Polynesia, the burden of parenting doesn’t just fall to the parents, but to the older siblings as well. Even kids as young as pre-school age help out, NPR reports.

3. In Argentina, bedtime isn’t strict

In the US, many parents always ensure their little ones are tucked in by a certain time. Parents in Argentina, however, tend to have a more laid-back view of bedtime, Hopgood said. “Kids need to be part of evening family [activities], even if they go late, because the meals are later there,” she said. This parenting practice happens in Spain, too.

Amazon isn't alone in punishing shoppers for too many returns — these are all the companies that track your returns (BBY, HD, LB)

Sephora

  • Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, Victoria's Secret, and other companies are tracking shoppers' returns dating back several years and, in some cases, punishing people who are suspected of abusing their return policies.
  • Many shoppers are unaware their returns are being tracked.
  • Home Depot engages in the practice to combat return fraud, which "is believed to be feeding the opioid epidemic," a Home Depot spokesman told Business Insider.
  • Sephora says only customers with "excessive returns" are targeted.

At least a dozen major retailers are discreetly tracking shoppers' returns and punishing people who are suspected of abusing their return policies.

Amazon, Best BuyHome Depot, and Victoria's Secret are among the many retailers engaging in this practice.

Many of these companies have hired a third-party firm, called The Retail Equation, to mine their sales data and keep a database of customers' returns to flag potentially problematic shoppers. Customers who are flagged are often barred from making future returns.

Retailers say they use the service to combat return fraud. Some critics say its raises privacy concerns, however, and dozens of shoppers have complained online about being unfairly punished by the system.

Business Insider compiled a list of the companies that track returns, based on information from the companies as well as customer complaints on social media.

Here's the full list:

SEE ALSO: Kroger is charging at Amazon with a company that uses 'swarms' of robots to get shoppers hooked on a 'powerful new drug'

Amazon

Amazon is banning customers who make too many returns, The Wall Street Journal reports. In some cases, Amazon failed to alert customers that they had returned too many items before closing their accounts.

"We want everyone to be able to use Amazon, but there are rare occasions where someone abuses our service over an extended period of time," an Amazon spokesman told The Journal. "We never take these decisions lightly, but with over 300 million customers around the world, we take action when appropriate to protect the experience for all our customers."

Home Depot

Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes said the company uses The Retail Equation to combat return fraud, which he said is "believed to be feeding the opioid epidemic."

"And returns fraud is also often the work of organized retail crime rings, thus funding serious crimes," he added. "These efforts not only protect the retailer’s bottom line, but they also help protect the communities where we do business. "

Unlike many other retailers, Home Depot only tracks returns that are not accompanied by a receipt, he said.

"The good news is that it’s pretty easy to avoid a non-receipted return these days because we can look up any card transaction or customers can opt to receive an email receipt rather than try to keep up with paper," he said.

CVS Pharmacy

CVS said it partnered with The Retail Equation (or TRE) last year.

"TRE's return management services are utilized by several major retailers representing more than 34,000 retail locations in the US," CVS said. "Since implementing TRE’s solution last year, approximately .003% (or one-third of 1%) of returns have been declined at our stores."

A customer whose return has been declined can dispute the decision through TRE, which will then initiate a review process with CVS, the company added.

7 times a flight upgrade might be worth your money

$

airplane

  • Airplane tickets can be extremely costly depending on your travel destination — and that’s before baggage fees, seating costs, and food on some airlines.
  • Upgrading your flight can be a good move if you want to accumulate miles, want to book a last-minute vacations, and the flexibility to depart at an unusual time.
  • If you’re looking to upgrade your flight without burning a hole through your wallet, here’s when your upgrade is worth the money.

I take dozens of international flights every year, which lends to the necessity of choosing upgrades for comfort. Between wanting more leg room to stretch out and ample seat space to get work done on my laptop, upgrades come in handy.

According to the United States Department of Transportation, the average domestic airfare was $352 in the first quarter of 2017. The high cost of airplane tickets, coupled with additional baggage and seating fees, can keep many people from clicking the “upgrade” option.

However, there are some variables that can make upgrading a more economical choice.

SEE ALSO: A seasoned traveler shares 6 things she never does at the airport

1. Upgrading your seat may give you access to premium lounges

When I was flying from Istanbul to Malé, Maldives on Turkish airlines, I decided to upgrade from economy to business class.

Instead of having to pay a couple hundred dollars for a hotel room during my 8-hour layover, I was able to use my business class ticket to enter the Turkish Airlines 20,000 square-foot lounge at Istanbul Airport— which included a marble shower with towels and luxury soap, food served 24/7 at several buffets, and comfortable couches to rest until my next flight.

I felt the upgrade to business was worth it to be able to lay flat and sleep on my 7+ hour flight. I ended up paying $999 at the gate (compared to $2,420 business class roundtrip).

2. Some airlines offer last-minute upgrade deals

Some airlines, such as Emirates and Malaysian Airlines, offer last-minute upgrades that are markedly cheaper at the gate than if you book the business class ticket ahead of time. The downside is that you usually don’t earn miles on the transaction and may not have access to the business lounge.

On my Turkish Airlines flight from New York to Istanbul, I opted to upgrade the red-eye leg so I could sleep better, but kept my economy seat for the daytime flight on the return trip.

This would not have been possible if I had booked the flight outright round trip, as my whole itinerary would be designated business class rather than split between economy and business. In the end, my total flight expense was less than if I had booked a roundtrip business class ticket upfront.

3. If you’re bringing kids on a long flight, consider an upgrade for better seating

When traveling with kids on a long, overnight flight, families may want to upgrade so everyone can sleep peacefully and arrive at the destination energized and ready to explore.

meghan markle royal wedding dress givenchy sketches

In the six short months since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has already become a major fashion icon. She's given us several moments of fashion inspiration, so expectations for her wedding gown were understandably high.

After months of speculation, Markle ultimately wore a stunning gown designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. The off-the-shoulder neckline and 16-foot foot veil made the dress just as breathtaking as Kate Middleton's memorable Alexander McQueen gown

Middleton's dress became inspiration for countless brides after her, and it looks like Markle's will end up doing the same. For brides who don't have a royal wedding-sized budget to spend on a custom Givenchy design, there are some cheaper options available that can give you the Markle Sparkle for less.

Missguided is selling a similar dress for a surprisingly affordable $60.

Though the neckline of this design is not quite as open as Markle's, the maxi dress does feature a similar silhouette and long sleeves.

Summer has earned its spot as the preferred season for the majority of people with increased outdoor time, sunlight and more relaxed people. But one thing that pretty much everyone agrees on is that the insects thriving off the warm weather can be terrible to contend with.

Fruit flies will appear and multiply at an unbelievable rate seemingly out of nowhere. Mosquitoes will find your backyard like every time their eyes close they see a map leading directly there. If you want to limit the number of times you have to cut a backyard barbecue, cabin fire pit, or dinner out on the patio short this summer, buying insect repellents that work is about as foolproof as you can get.

Your ideal kind of vacation, according to your zodiac sign

hawaii woman tourist hiker

  • Geminis love to be intellectually engaged and would appreciate museums full of beautiful art, no matter the city or country.
  • Virgos are workaholics so beach vacations would probably bore them.
  • A Capricorn will have their entire travel itinerary planned out and would thrive in an educational kind of vacation.

Are you the type to go hang gliding in Australia or cozy up for a week-long staycation? The answer is in your stars.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

For an Aries, vacation doesn't necessarily mean just laying back and soaking in the sunlight. Exactly how much sun do we need to be healthy? Aries feels liberated by the excitement of activity. They need to get all of their energy out on vacation so they can return to their daily lives refreshed. "Vacations with lots of activities and action will appeal to Aries' energetic and outgoing nature," says "Sage Goddess" astrologer, Dr. Athena Perrakis. "Think an all-inclusive resort with outdoor sports activities in an exotic and warm location, like the Caribbean or Hawaii." Whether it be wakeboarding or cliff diving, Aries is ready for anything!

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

Whatever type of vacation it is, a Taurus better be treated like royalty. They love to be pampered — but they also tend to feel most comfortable when they're in a familiar place. "Taurus is something of a homebody," Dr. Perrakis says, "so for vacations, they like to have their creature comforts." Still, she adds, "they do feel wanderlust at times and especially if they have a fire sign rising or moon, this will be even more pronounced. A staycation at a beautiful resort, or a lavish vacation to Paris where the hotel will have all of the amenities in place while they explore, will be very appealing to Taurus." So whether a Taurus stays local for a week or catches a flight to Europe, they absolutely need their spa days! Here are the best ways to de-stress, based on your zodiac

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

The key to a perfect vacation for a Gemini is to cater to mind, body, and spirit. Gemini love to roam from place to place, so there is really no destination they won't circle on their map. But the best way for a Gemini to enjoy whatever city they're in is to get their brain involved. "Gemini is a natural explorer," Dr. Perrakis says. "The most important thing for a Gemini is to feel intellectually engaged, so trips that include sightseeing excursions with guided tours would be a big hit! A surprise trip to Italy to tour the Uffizi Gallery and view all of Botticelli's original art? Gemini would say yes, please!"

Did you know that Gemini will be the healthiest zodiac sign of 2018?

kilauea

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is still gushing lava, weeks after violent eruptions first began.

On Tuesday, Kilauea sent an ash plume thousands of feet into the sky, creating more havoc on the Big Island.

The volcanic eruptions have been escalating for about two weeks, severely damaging nearby residential neighborhoods. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from their homes.

Beyond the immediate fire danger from the lava, high levels of sulfur dioxide spewing from the volcano pose a serious threat to children, elderly people, and people with respiratory issues, the United States Geological Survey said.

The ongoing eruptions have severely impacted Hawaii's tourism-driven economy, and have forced over 2,000 people to evacuate their homes.

Here's what it looks like on the ground:

Fast food salads have never sounded like a great idea, but we stand by the fact that the McSalad Shakers were the best iteration of the meal we've seen. Still, diners weren't enthused enough about the three options — chef, garden, and grilled chicken Caesar — for the cup-o-salads to stay on the menu for longer than three years.

However, a Facebook page now exists with the goal of bringing the shakers back.

Burger King's Cini-Minis

Back in 1998, Burger King teamed up with Pillsbury to make magic that came in the form of Cini-Minis. These miniature cinnamon rolls were meant to be just the heart of the bun — ie the best part — and were served hot with a packet of icing that you could either use for pouring on top or dipping in.

We're not sure why they were discontinued, but we're definitely here for this Twitter account dedicated to bringing them back.

Wendy's Chicken Caesar Pita

If you ate at Wendy's with any regularity during the late '90s, chances are you tried — and loved — the chain's Chicken Caesar Pita. Boasting low-fat Caesar dressing and warm bread, this dish (and the two others versions the chain introduced) was supposedly Wendy's answer to the "wrap craze" that was taking over fast food restaurants at the time.

This dinner favorite made it about three years before it was discontinued. But its legacy lives on on sites like Pinterest and Top Secret Recipes where many try to recreate it.

17 movies you had no idea were based on books

You've probably walked out of a movie theater before to hear someone say, "The book was better," or "It wasn't as good as the book." And although you really shouldn't compare the vastly different medium, there are also probably a great deal of movies you've watched and walked away from, not knowing it was based on a book you could read as well.

Some of the original texts were created years — if not decades or centuries— before its movie counterpart. Authors like Shakespeare unfortunately don't get to see their creation take shape in various ways, but at least the rest of us get to enjoy the initial work in new ways.

Comparing the book to the movie is natural, and it's interesting to note what narrative creative liberties some filmmakers took when adapting the original work to film. Below you'll find movies that you had no clue were originally books.

1. André Aciman's 2007 novel "Call Me By Your Name" became a critically-acclaimed, Oscar-nominated mega-hit in 2017.

The movie delves into a short period of time between Elio and Oliver during their summer in Italy, and shortly after during Hanukkah in the winter time. In the book, Aciman writes about the male leads both 15 and 20 years after the pair's initial summer.

2. "Forrest Gump" was originally a novel, written by Winston Groom, released in 1986. It became a film in 1994.

The film went on to receive multiple Academy Awards in 1995. Its depiction of the main character Forrest departed from the novel in that the movie "took the rough edges off the character," according to an interview Groom did with The New York Timesin 1994, noting his protagonist used more profanities in the novel.

3. Cult classic "Clueless," released in 1995, is loosely based off Jane Austen's 1815 novel "Emma."

Main character Cher is based off the titular role of the novel it's based off, and the supporting characters also parallel Austen's novel.

9 compelling 'Westworld' fan theories you need to know

Dolores and Teddy Westworld season two

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Westworld" season two.

Who did Ford have Bernard print onto a control unit? What is the "weapon" William showed Dolores? Who was Dolores speaking to in the second season's opening scene?

From the best posts on the "Westworld" subreddit community to popular YouTube videos, we're here to bring you all the biggest fan theories about what's in store on the second season of HBO's hit series.

Keep reading for a look at nine major "Westworld" fan theories you should know.

The Bernard we saw wake up on the beach is being manipulated by the Delos team in a looped narrative.

There's something off with Bernard in the "two week later" time frame we're seeing this season. He's disoriented, but was able to finish Karl Strand's sentence and saw different versions of the hosts being executed on the beach

Many on the /r/westworld community, as well as YouTuber HaxDogma, have speculated that the Delos team knows Bernard is a host and they're putting him through a looped narrative in order to make him reveal what happened.

Now that we know "The Cradle" is a simulation technology, it's possible the version of Bernard we saw wake up on the beach is really just undergoing a simulation so the Delos team can extract information from him.

The secret Delos experiment is making human-host clones of important guests who have visited the park.

As Bernard witnessed in the secret lab Charlotte brought him to on the first episode this season, Delos has been logging video footage of guests' experiences along with their DNA. Then we saw a second hidden lab on the fourth episode, where the host-human hybrid of James Delos was being kept.

The Host-James was a failed experiment, but what if Charlotte and Delos were able to crack the coding? Are they trying to create more host-human hybrids of other important people? Or are the guest logs being used to blackmail powerful people in society who visit the park and indulge?

Dolores made a new Arnold host, and that's who she was talking to during the very first scene of this season.

The very first scene of this season is a big mystery. It's shown in a different aspect ratio than the rest of the episode, and at first it appears to be a flashback of Arnold talking to Dolores.

But if you rewatch the scene, it can be interpreted as current, fully conscious Dolores waking up a host-version of Arnold and questioning him.

The clothes and mannerisms match with what we've seen of Arnold in the past, but so far it's a a toss-up for who the person is sitting across from Dolores.

cherry street san francisco housing market

Tucked into the bottom corner of a 110-year-old Victorian house in San Francisco is a 385-square foot apartment that has one bathroom and no bedroom. It's selling for almost $500,000.

It's nestled in San Francisco's tony Presidio Heights neighborhood, where the median home price is almost $5 million according to Redfin. So consider this half-a-million-dollar chateau a steal.

The home is being marketed as the perfect pied-à-terre, a French phrase to describe an abode that's for occasional use. And given its tight footprint, unless you've got a thing for very small spaces, the home seems best suited for popping in periodically to lay your head.

Take a look inside the studio:

The one-story unit at 333B Cherry St. is one of three in the Victorian house. It sits about three minutes away from the opulent homes in the gated loopty-loop of Presidio Terrace.

It was built in 1908 but has been renovated in recent years.

The property is 385 square feet and includes a kitchen and a bathroom.

Queen Elizabeth has met many famous people throughout her 66-year reign, like Frank Sinatra in 1958.
