How Allergan went from a tiny but beloved Southern California eye care company to a dealmaking machine to falling out of grace with investors (AGN)

Allergan CEO Brent Saunders

It's been a rocky year for Allergan, the pharmaceutical company best known for making Botox.

Investors have been unhappy with Allergan's stock performance over the last year, and some have expressed interest in seeing the pharma company explore splitting up. On Wednesday, Allergan announced it plans to sell its women's health and infectious disease businesses. The news sent Allergan's stock down 2%, suggesting the move didn't go as far as some would like.

"For a senior leadership team that has presided over significant value destruction due in no small part to a series of poorly thought out transactions and unforced errors, entrusting the same leadership team with the task of driving value recovery via further M&A is hardly confidence inspiring in our view, to say nothing of the message it sends to shareholders regarding accountability (or more notably lack thereof)," Piper Jaffray analyst David Amsellem wrote in a note on Wednesday.

Here's how the company went from its start as a small but beloved company out of Southern California in the 1950s to where it is today.

SEE ALSO: David Tepper now has the go-ahead to go full activist on Allergan if he wants to

Allergan was founded in 1948 by pharmacist Gavin S. Herbert, shown below on the left with Dr. Parmis Khatibi, a specialist at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in 2014.

Along with chemist Stanley Bly, Herbert created the company's first drug, an anti-allergy nose drop that used the antihistamine neoantergan. They marketed the drug under the name Allergan.

The eye drops launched Allergan into the eye care field. Allergan Pharmaceuticals Inc. officially became a company in 1950, and the company focused on eye products before going public in 1970.

I cut back on sugar, and this is the best advice I can give you if you want to do the same

  • Sugar is one of the most over-consumed substances in the American diet.
  • Going cold-turkey is not always the best method. Cutting back gradually and keeping your added sugar intake to a minimum sometimes works best.
  • Eliminating sugar doesn't always lead to permanent weight loss. But gradually cutting back and maintaining a healthy lifestyle does.

My overly-active sweet tooth has been an issue since I was a kid. Sugar is what I turned to when things in my world just didn't seem right. It's the crutch I used when my anxiety took over. And it's the substance I devoured when during times of celebration.

At a routine check-up eight years ago, I discovered my cholesterol levels were off the charts (plus my weight was over 200 pounds). My doctor told me I had six months to get my numbers under control or she was going to prescribe medication. I immediately went home, got rid of all of the sugar and high-fat foods in my house, and declared to the world that I was cutting out all processed foods and added sugar.

That was the first of many failed attempts to eliminate all added sugar from my diet.

SEE ALSO: How to find the best restaurant wherever you are, according to Anthony Bourdain

What happened when I cut out all added sugar

Most of my attempts to cut out added sugar ended the same way: me bingeing on more sugar after feeling deprived. I tried going cold-turkey on some of my favorites, including cereal, yogurt, chocolate, ice cream, and condiments like teriyaki and spaghetti sauce, but it never lasted. I understand that breaking the sugar habit takes time. But I also realized that having an "all-or-nothing" mentality did not work for me.

The longest I made it on a complete sugar elimination diet was about five days. I dealt with some withdrawal symptoms, like headaches and fatigue, but it was the mental side-effects that told me a "no-sugar" diet was not going to work. During the periods of complete sugar elimination, my anxiety would spike and things felt very out of control.

This didn't make sense to me, because I always thought eliminating sugar altogether would decrease my anxiety symptoms. But it didn't.

"When trying to cut back on sugar, sudden changes are not advised as they may precipitate feelings of anxiety as the body ‘crashes' from a sugar high," explained Dr. Uma Naidoo, MD, director of nutritional and lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

This is exactly what I experienced when I tried to go cold-turkey. Instead of reducing my anxiety symptoms, the sudden change from a high amount of sugar to no sugar exacerbated my symptoms. It wasn't until I shifted back to a moderation mentality that I was able to benefit from the reduction in anxiety symptoms that does come from reducing sugar in your diet.

Sugar and weight loss

For many people, myself included, the initial elimination diet resulted in a lower number on the scale. However, when I realized that I couldn't sustain this approach, I started eating sugar again, and a lot of it. Of course, that initial weight that I lost came back.

But weight loss was not the main motivator for me in my quest to ditch sugar. There is a history of heart disease and high cholesterol in my family, and my dad died of a heart attack. Through my research, I found studies linking high sugar intake with an increase in cardiovascular disease and CVD mortality. That was enough for me to put the brakes on and cut back on my daily dose of sweets.

The sweet spot

If you're one of the many people who can cut added sugar completely out of your diet, I commend you. But if you're anything like me, eliminating all added sugar was a disaster.

It took several years of trial and error, but I think I've finally found the trick — at least one that works for me. And it seems my shift from "no sugar" to "cut back on sugar" is a method experts also recommend.

"My advice is to practice moderation and work your way towards cutting back on sugar," Priya Khorana, who holds a doctorate in nutrition education, told Business Insider. She recommends cutting sugar out of your diet gradually if you want this lifestyle change to be sustainable.

This approach differs from the cold-turkey method and takes more time to see and feel results. However,"it's those consistent small changes that you make in your daily diet that will work best," Naidoo told Business Insider.

The American Heart Associationadvises that women consume no more than six teaspoons of sugar daily, which comes out to about 100 calories. Men should aim for less than nine teaspoons, or about 150 calories from sugar. And the World Health Organization says people should get no more than 10% of their daily calories from sugar.

So when it comes to daily sugar intake, I aim to keep my added sugar budget under 25 grams (about 5 teaspoons) per day, which does not include naturally-occurring sugar from fruits or vegetables. (The American Heart Associationadvises that women consume no more than six teaspoons — about 100 calories — of sugar daily. Men should aim for less than nine teaspoons, or about 150 calories, from sugar.)

But there are days when my number is higher. Sometimes, it's  much higher. Shocking, right?

I like to eat, and sometimes what I choose to put in my mouth is considered "off-limits" on many diets. There have been many times that my methods have been questioned and even criticized by people who believe you must eliminate carbs, processed food, or all sugar in order to live a healthy life.

I've tried that, and it didn't work for me. But I'm doing something right, because I've maintained a 75-pound weight loss over seven years, and I manage to keep my cholesterol levels in a healthy range.

The most environmentally friendly cities in the US

san francisco

With World Environment Day coming up on June 5, INSIDER researched the most environmentally friendly cities in the US.

To find the most eco-conscious destinations across the country, we consulted a range of sources, including Siemens' Green City Index for the US and Canada, which measures and rates the environmental performance of 27 cities in North America, and WalletHub's 2017 list of the greenest cities in America, which compares 100 of the largest cities in the US across 22 "green" indicators like median air-quality and number of jobs accessible by public transit.

Keep reading to learn about 25 of the most eco-friendly US cities, from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Chicago, Illinois.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii's capital, topped The Daily Beast's 2014 list of the greenest cities in the US. The site based its findings on government data and research conducted by Experian Marketing Services, a market research firm that has tracked the greening of America for more than 50 years.

According to The Daily Beast — which analyzed several categories of data ranging from "The percentage of people who think and act in an eco-conscious way" to "The number of energy efficient commercial buildings per capita, as recorded by the Environmental Protection Agency"— 66.1% of Honolulu residents are very eco-conscious.

Given that Honolulu boasts numerous beaches, lush vegetation, and incredible volcanic landforms that make it one of the prettiest cities in America, it makes sense that the people who live there are dedicated to preserving natural resources.

Portland, Oregon

Portland earned the top spot on Travel + Leisure's 2015 readers' survey of the greenest cities in America. The magazine asked readers to rank destinations based on eco-friendly offerings like mass-transit options and restaurants that source ingredients locally.

From vegetarian food truck eats to thrift store threads, Portland isn't just hip— it's sustainable, too.

San Francisco, California

With a cumulative score of 74.24, San Francisco came in first on WalletHub's 2017 ranking of America's greenest cities. The personal finance website compared 22 eco-focused data points for the 100 largest cities in the country such as median air-quality index and number of jobs accessible by public transit.

In 2011, Siemens named San Francisco the greenest city in the US and Canada on its Green City Index. From a law that requires residents and businesses keep recycling and compost material separate from normal trash to widescale dedication to solar energy (including 60,000-square-foot solar paneling on the roof of the San Francisco Convention Center), the Golden City demonstrates how metros can do their part to save the planet.

Office dress codes are getting more and more casual — but there are 5 things you can never get away with

job

  • Office dress codes are getting more casual, which can make deciding what to wear to work more difficult.
  • Long gone are the days of wearing pant suits and ties at most companies — many employees are enjoying less formal attire as millennials step into the workplace.
  • Although your idea of casual clothing may include athleisure and ripped jeans, you shouldn’t wear these to your job. Here are six things not to wear to work with a casual dress code.

Millennials are taking over the workforce. According to a study by UNC, by 2020, Millennials will make up 46% of workers in the U.S.

The youth of the workforce, combined with the influence of Silicon Valley, has made office attire more casual, according to The Atlantic. The late Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are both known for their casual work uniforms, “a black, mock turtleneck for the former and a gray T-shirt and hoodie for the latter.”

But how can you make sure you stay on the right side of the line between casual and unprofessional?

Stephanie Gallo, associate director of career planning at Fairfield University, prepares students to successfully enter the workforce after graduation. Gallo shared with Business Insider her insight on what not to wear to an office with a casual dress code.

SEE ALSO: 13 things you should never say at work that most people don't know

1. Anything you wouldn't wear to a meeting with a client

Gallo described a casual dress code as "not the formal suite/tie, but still put together and professional."

Leggings and other gym wear, for example, don't fall into the "put together" category, so save them for your time off.

2. Jeans with tears or visible wear

When wearing jeans to work, Gallo said you should only wear your nicest pairs. That means no stains, no signs of fading, and, most importantly, no rips or holes.

If any part of your leg is exposed when wearing the pair of jeans, don’t wear them to work.

Opt for jeans with a dark wash. Dark-wash jeans look more put-together than light- and acid-wash jeans. As a light-wash enthusiast, this is one of the best pieces of advice I've received.

3. Anything that your boss has not worn before

Gallo said that modeling your work clothes after what your boss wears is key to mastering a casual dress code.

“You want to dress for the job you want, not the one you have,” Gallo said. “I would use my boss as a guide for what I should be wearing. If they are more business casual, then I would follow suit. If they are very casual, then you have an open door to dress that way.”

6 celebrities who publicly identify as pansexual

Janelle Monae

There's been a lot of buzz about pansexuality lately, ever since singer Janelle Monáe publicly came out as pansexual and, then, when it was revealed that beloved "Star Wars" character Lando Calrissian, appearing in the new "Solo: A Star Wars Story" movie, is pansexual, too.

According to GLADD, "being pansexual means being attracted to all gender identities, or attracted to people regardless of gender," whereas "being bisexual means being attracted to more than one gender."

But Monáe isn't the first celebrity to identify with this label. These other celebs are pansexual, too.

Amandla Stenberg initially said they were bisexual because they didn't think people understood pansexuality.

Known for playing Rue in "The Hunger Games," Amandla Stenberg — who identifies as gender non-binary — called themself bisexual during a 2016 Teen Vogue Snapchat takeover. Later, they stated in a 2016 video for Rookie magazine that they only used the word "bisexual" because they didn't feel enough people understood what "pansexual" means.

Rapper Roes, previously known as Angel Haze, has identified as pansexual for years.

The rapper Roes, who used to be known as Angel Haze, told Fusion TV in 2013 that she identifies as pansexual. Also in 2013, when someone on Twitter asked if she was gay, she responded: "No. Lol. I am whatever I am when I am it." In the past, she has been linked to model and actress Ireland Baldwin.

Reality TV star and trans activist Jazz Jennings tweeted that she is pansexual earlier this year.

In January, transgender activist and reality TV star Jazz Jennings declared on Twitter: "I am pansexual. This means that I am attracted to people at a level that surpasses gender identity or sexual orientation. I love people for their souls and internal beauty."

best dry shampoo

The Insider Pick:

  • Some days you just run out of time to wash your hair, but that doesn't mean it has to look greasy. Dry shampoo is here to save you from a bad hair day. Of all the dry shampoos around, R+Co’s Death Valley Dry Shampoo is the best because it makes your hair look like new.

Although you may feel guilty for not washing your hair as regularly as your scalp wants you to, you're actually doing your hair a favor by not washing it daily. According to dermatologists Paradi Mirmimani and Lynne Goldberg, no one should be washing their hair every day.

Now you’re probably thinking, “But won’t my hair get greasy and oily if I don’t wash it?” — and you’d be exactly right. Enter dry shampoo, a product that is meant to be applied to your hair on no-wash days to absorb oil and keep your hair looking clean.

Picking out dry shampoos can be tricky. Long-haired people already spend enough money on hair products as it is, but buying a cheap dry shampoo can mean that you’ll end up with stiff, Troll doll-like hair ornamented with white flecks.

It feels frivolous to spend too much money on a good dry shampoo, because, well, why not just spend your money on actual shampoo? However, a good dry shampoo can be the difference between a great hair day and a terrible one, so it's a good idea to get the best one for your needs.

After doing some research on the most buzz-worthy dry shampoos on the market, taking a look at recommendations from pro hairstylists, as well as buyer reviews and our own experiences, we have found the best dry shampoos for any hair type and price point.

Here are the best dry shampoos you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best dry shampoo overall

Why you'll love it: The R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo has a lightweight formula that instantly refreshes your hair with a swoon-worthy scent.

Suitable for all hair colors, R+Co's miracle-working dry shampoo makes hair look clean days after a wash, and it even works to volumize and extend styling. Rich in healthy natural ingredients, this spray contains Brazilian rice protein to moisturize hair, while antioxidant-rich vitamin E extract strengthens and keeps hair shiny. To volumize your hair, the spray contains pro-vitamin B5.

R+Co's dry shampoo is also made from vegan and cruelty-free ingredients. It’s incredibly easy to apply — just aim and spray. With enough distance from the bottle to your head, the product won’t leave any white streaks, and luckily, just a little goes a long way.

Many reviewers on Influenster noted that this is a pricier option for dry shampoo because it costs $29, while drugstore options start around $4. However, those same reviewers mention that it is worth every penny, and that they will continue to repurchase the dry shampoo.

One featured reviewer on Influenster gushes, “When I have those mornings where I wake up late and have to scramble to get ready for work, this dry shampoo is my go to! ... all it takes is a few sprays and my hair goes right back to being voluminous and soft. I just brush it out, and it feels and looks just like I showered and blew my hair out.”

Allure experts have also shown some love for this hair care staple, noting that the inclusion of silica in its ingredients instead of cheaper talc “absorbs oil, is extremely lightweight, and goes on sheer.”

Pros: Suitable for all hair types and colors, vegan and cruelty free, contains healthy and natural ingredients, good for layering day after day

Cons: On the pricey side

The best cult classic dry shampoo

Why you'll love it: Sometimes you don’t have time for a full wash, but Batiste Dry Shampoo is here to save the day.

Part of adulthood is coming to terms with the fact that you will occasionally sleep through your alarm and not have time to shower before work. There’s no shame in that. It happens to literally everyone (some of us with more frequency than others). But it does mean you should have a contingency plan — i.e. a really good dry shampoo.

There are countless options on the market, but shoppers really go wild over the wallet-friendly Batiste Dry Shampoo. The cult classic dry shampoo has 31,702 reviews and a 4.5 rating out of 5 on Influenster, and it also won Best Dry Shampoo in the 2017 Influenster Reviewers’ Choice AwardsFans love it for its ability to de-grease your hair without making your roots unnaturally stiff.

Our guides editor Malarie Gokey also loves this dry shampoo and uses it on those in-between days when she doesn't have time to wash her hair.

Batiste comes in a bunch of different scents with funky names like “Wild” and “Neon Lights,” and there are even some tinted versions, which is great if the original gives you the dreaded white cast, as some darker-haired reviewers noted that it did for them, or if you’re looking to cover up grown-out roots.

Still, even with that minor caveat, Batiste Dry Shampoo is a great dry shampoo with an unbeatable under-$10 price tag. As one Influenster user puts it, “Let’s just say if I️ was to have $10 til payday and I️t was between buying a bottle of Batiste or eating a meal... I️ pick the dry shampoo. I️t is a lifesaver!” — Erin Mayer

Pros: Bargain price tag, cuts down on oil without making hair stiff and crunchy

Cons: Might leave white residue on darker hair colors

The best drugstore dry shampoo

Why you'll love it: At an affordable price, it’s almost impossible to turn away from Dove’s Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo.

Most of the time, beauty junkies won’t look twice at a product that sells for only $4. That price point means the quality suffers, right? Well, not when you’re looking at Dove’s Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo.

This gem is easy to find and easily distinguishes itself from the masses of competing drugstore dry shampoos. Like the R+Co Death Valley, it contains silica — a rarity for lower-priced products, which normally use talc instead — ensuring that the dry shampoo instantly volumizes and goes on without residue.

Awarded an Allure Best of Beauty certification in 2014, the official review from the magazine notes how powerfully the spray distributes product, ensuring a generous application for the days when your hair is needing that extra oomph.

A number of verified Amazon reviewers note that the dry shampoo far exceeded their expectations at such a low price point and that it even works on wigs.

Pros: You can’t beat the affordable price point, four different options from the line

Cons: Some users complained about white residue and a too-powerful smell

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: The cast of 'Even Stevens' 15 years later

even stevens

"Even Stevens" was the perfect family comedy.

The Disney Channel series followed the Stevens family as little brother Louis' high jinks annoyed siblings Donnie and Ren. It captured the middle school and high school experiences in a real way.

June marks a big anniversary for the series. It premiered on June 17, 2000, its last episode aired June 2, 2003, and it wrapped completely June 13, 2003 with "The Even Stevens Movie."

It's been 15 years since the show wrapped, so here's what the cast has been up to since.

Shia LaBeouf broke out as Louis Stevens.

He was the youngest Stevens sibling.

LaBeouf has starred in some Hollywood blockbusters but has also had some run-ins with the law.

He moved into blockbusters with the "Transformers" franchise and had other hits like "Disturbia." He recently played tennis player John McEnroe in "Borg/McEnroe" and is currently filming "Honey Boy," where LaBeouf is playing his father and Lucas Hedges is playing a younger version of LaBeouf. The actor has also gone into public art performances.

But unfortunately, LaBeouf has had some run-ins with the law, most recently being arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, obstruction, and public drunkenness during which he also gave a racist rant.

Christy Carlson Romano played Ren, Louis' sister.

She was the middle Stevens sibling.

9 things you do every day that you had no idea were hurting the environment

coffee drinking

One of our goals as human beings should be to leave the earth in a better condition than we found it. That includes doing as much as we can to reduce our footprint — a task that is sometimes easier said than done.

There are little habits we mindlessly practice every day without even realizing the negative effect they are having on our planet. The time it takes to break a habit varies and is by no means an easy feat, but even a little bit of change can go a long way to saving the environment.

Laundry detergent is tough on the environment.

Few things can rival the smell of freshly-done laundry. But unfortunately, keeping your clothes clean can be tough on the environment.

Detergents which contain phosphates can create algae in fresh water, which then depletes the oxygen available to aquatic life, according to Livestrong.

Bleach is equally as detrimental to our surroundings. Chlorine bleach released into water bodies, when mixed with other minerals, react to form hazardous toxins. Consider all-natural homemade bleach alternatives and detergents. And if you're not the DIY type, look for safer options in stores.

Washing your face could release microbeads into the earth.

Chances are you've heard of microbeads which are popular exfoliating agents found in some facial cleansers. They're actually small pieces of plastic — so tiny that they slip through sewage filtration and water treatment systems. They are often mistaken for food and eaten by water organisms.

So far California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland and New Jersey are the states which have banned microbeads.

Grocery shopping takes a lot of plastic.

In recent years, supermarkets have made a push to reduce the use of plastic and some have managed to eliminate it altogether. But the reality is that most items available in grocery stores are packaged in paper or plastic, not to mention the bags used to carry them home.

Plastic cannot be absorbed by the environment and a large amount winds up in the ocean — a situation which is harmful to water organisms, wildlife, and humans. Scientists have predicted by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Do your part by recycling and using a cloth bag to go shopping.

Juno, a tennis-court-size NASA probe at Jupiter, recently sent scientists a new batch of data, and the photos it included are even more stunning than the last set.

NASA launched Juno toward Jupiter in August 2011 and the probe arrived in July 2016. Every 53.5 days since then, Juno has performed an orbital maneuver called a perijove.

During a perijove, the probe dives over the north pole, screams past the Jovian cloud tops at 130,000 mph, and exits at the south pole. This highly elliptical loop helps protect the spacecraft's electronics from Jupiter's powerful radiation fields while also allowing it to record unprecedented observations.

The $1-billion mission successfully pulled off its 13th perijove on May 24. Fans of the mission like graphic artist Seán Doran and NASA software engineer Kevin M. Gill have since processed the raw image files into colorful works of art.

Here are some of the most jaw-dropping pictures from Juno's latest trip around Jupiter.

SEE ALSO: The best images Juno has ever taken of Jupiter

DON'T MISS: Jupiter is so big it does not actually orbit the sun

Juno begins a perijove by accelerating over Jupiter's north pole.

The maneuver takes a couple of hours, and scientists are mainly interested in gathering magnetic, radio, radiation, and gravitational readings. But NASA added a camera to capture Jupiter in a sequence of images.

Once the data gets to Earth, artists download and process it. Some stitch and wrap the flat images onto 3D models to make them look as if you were right there.

6 simple ways to lose weight without eating less

unbreakable kimmy schmidt workout

  • Increasing the quality and amount of sleep you get each night can help with weight loss.
  • If you want to lose weight without slashing your calories, try increasing the amount of time you exercise each day.
  • Filling up on fiber allows you to eat more food and feel full longer.

What if you could lose weight without eating less food? If you're stuck on a diet roller coaster, the idea of eating a "normal" amount of food might sound too good to be true. The good news is, you don't have to drastically cut calories to lose weight.

Simplyfocusing on healthier choices can lead to a decrease in your weight and a better chance at long-term success. In fact, registered dietitianTracy Lockwood, MS, RD, told INSIDER that when it comes to losing weight, you should focus more on nutrient dense options rather than eating less food.

"By choosing higher nutritional quality foods, you will be more likely to stay full without feeling famished," said Lockwood. "And by default, you may be eating less total calories because of the power of satiety, rather than grazing throughout the entire day."

Plus, Lockwood pointed out that the more you think about weight loss and dieting, the more you want to eat, so it's ultra important not to skimp out on your daily caloric requirements.

To lose weight (and keep it off) you need to switch your mindset from one of deprivation to one of high-quality foods. Not sure how to get started? Here are six ways to lose weight without eating less.

Fill up on fiber.

Lockwood said that eating foods high in fiber, such as raspberries, Brussel sprouts, nuts and seeds, or black beans, can keep you regular and help promote healthy digestion. The fiber in these foods keeps can keep you feeling fuller longer whichcan lead to weight loss.

Exercise, exercise, exercise.

It might seem like a simple solution to a complex problem, but moving your body more will allow you to eat more, and still lose weight. "Byexpending more calories via physical activity, you may be more likely to shed a few pounds," explained Lockwood. "That's because you can burn between 1,000-2,000 calories a day by engaging in normal daily behaviors such as talking, chewing, digesting food, regulating your temperature, and even breathing," she said.

Though you can't outwork a "bad" diet, eating a healthy amount while working out can allow you to find a balance.

Use the protein pacing method.

Eating lean sources of protein regularly throughout the day will help you feel full longer, which may lead to an increase in weight loss. Dr. Paul Arciero developed a weight loss and exercise system called thePRISE protocol, in which the P stands for "Protein Pacing." He said eating four to six evenly spaced meals each day and including 20-40 grams of protein at each meal can increase exercise performance and help with weight loss.

All of the 'Avengers 4' spoilers the actors have accidentally revealed so far

avengers infinity war

  • "Avengers 4" is not set to be released until May 3, 2019.
  • This leaves plenty of time for the cast to accidentally let some spoilers slip.
  • Here are some of the details we have learned from the actors so far.

There's a year between "Avengers: Infinity War" and the release of next year's "Avengers 4," and that means Marvel's stars have plenty of time to unwittingly spoil the film. Some of the cast have a form for dropping major spoilers. Mark Ruffalo accidentally spoiled the end of "Infinity War" a year ago (but managed to pass it off as a joke). And Tom Holland is so notorious for his loose lips that, when he accidentally took his "Avengers: Infinity War" script home, the young actor actually felt it was necessary to burn the script in order to reassure producers it wouldn't leak. He live-streamed the act for good measure.

It's hardly surprising, then, that Marvel has become renowned for their secrecy, and right now the studio is trying to keep any information about "Avengers 4" under wraps. In fact, they haven't even announced the film's title, insisting it's a spoiler of some kind. That means every little detail is crucial — and viewers are hanging on every word from the cast and crew.

The problem is, given filming on "Avengers 4" wrapped up last year and there's a year to go, the stars of the show have a year in which to slip up. Many of the actors are currently shooting other movies, so will wind up on press tours promoting their films, and journalists will inevitably ask about "Avengers 4." Out of Marvel's bubble, the truth flows more readily. Here's what they've said so far; to date, nothing too important has been unwittingly revealed, but we'll keep this page updated with any more potential spoilers.

A scene involving everyone, including Michelle Pfeiffer

Sebastian Stan (a.k.a. Bucky, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, a.k.a. the White Wolf) has teased that there's a single scene in which every Marvel hero stands together.

"There was one scene, I think, we had where everybody was there. I can't really talk about that scene, but I knew it took them three months in planning this scene to have everyone there. You look around and you just saw everyone from Samuel L. Jackson to Michael Douglas to Michelle Pfeiffer. Everybody was there."

A decade ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched when Nick Fury told Tony Stark he had just "become part of a bigger universe." This seems to be the culmination of that, a single scene in which Stan said "everybody" was there. Notice that he singled out some of the stars of "Ant-Man & the Wasp," Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer. Marvel executive producer Victoria Alonso had also teased Pfeiffer's involvement, so it's exciting to see that apparently confirmed.

No doubt scheduling the shooting of this scene was a logistical nightmare for the Russo brothers. While principal photography on "Avengers 4" wrapped a few weeks before Brie Larson began work on "Captain Marvel,""Ant-Man & the Wasp" filmed concurrently with the Avengers movie. Getting Samuel L. Jackson involved would also have been tricky since he began work on M. Night Shyalaman's "Unbreakable"/"Split" follow-up "Glass" in Fall 2017, right in the middle of "Avengers 4's" production schedule. Given that, this may have taken place the day of the 10-year Anniversary photo shoot.

Thanos will fight Captain Marvel

Thanos may have demanded your silence with "Infinity War," but even Josh Brolin has let slip some "Avengers 4" spoilers. Discussing the behind-the-scenes production of the Avengers movie, he joked about the experience of mo-capping a role:

"I'm Josh, who's got dots on him, and a onesie, and a helmet can, and I've got Scarlett right there, and I've got Brie, and Don Cheadle, and Hemsworth, and Chris Evans, and Downey...I'm sitting there and I'm looking like I look, which is not 700lb and purple and eight feet tall. I mean, I'm feeling about as far from Jason Statham as one can feel at that moment, and yet I'm acting like I feel 10 times what Jason Statham is. I'm the man!"

Brolin's sentence structure is unclear; he may well be referring to a single scene in which Thanos battles all the assembled heroes, but he could just as easily be conflating those encounters while telling the story. What is clear, though, is that "Avengers 4" will see Thanos cross paths with Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. The post-credits scene of "Avengers: Infinity War" saw Fury send out a mayday to Captain Marvel, and Carol Danvers is confirmed to appear in the sequel. It seems she'll be going head-to-head with the Mad Titan.

Shuri appears to meet Star-Lord

It looks as though "Avengers 4" will see Shuri and Star-Lord share a scene. While appearing at MCM London Comic Con, Letitia Wright was asked which actor she enjoyed working with the most. "Chris Pratt was genuinely a great person," Wright answered. "He would like give me bible scriptures out of nowhere and then do a dance and leave. He’s great. I love Chris Pratt.""Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4" shot back-to-back, and Shuri and Star-Lord never crossed paths in "Infinity War;" thus this statement alludes to the two working together in the sequel.

Technically, this also spoils the fact that Pratt has more scenes in "Avengers 4," which strongly suggests his death in "Infinity War" will either be undone or averted. That's not exactly a surprise, though, given that the heroes killed in the cliffhanger ending of "Avengers: Infinity War" are all characters who are set to appear in sequels. Nobody is expecting the deaths to be permanent, as Dave Bautista has confirmed by indicating he'll be appearing in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."

7 signs you're spending too much — even if you don't think you are

$

Clueless_ParamontPictures_Shopping

Do you often find yourself stressed out about money? A recent survey by mobile banking company, Varo Money found that 85% of Americans worry about their finances. One of the main concerns is the inability to cover an emergency or unexpected expenses. Of course, there are those aren't making enough money. And others who live above their means, even if they don't realize it.

INSIDER spoke to financial educator Tiffany Aliche, more popularly known as The Budgetnista  — a nod to her popular blog which promotes financial literacy, budgeting, credit, and debt management. Aliche is the author of the number one bestseller "The One Week Budget" and offers numerous free resources including the LIVE RICHER Challenge, which helps women pave the way to financial freedom by decreasing their debt and increasing their assets in 22 days.

Aliche shared some red flags that indicate you may be spending a bit too much.

1. You are consistently using a credit card versus your debit card.

Think twice before pulling out that piece of plastic because even the smallest charges add up and before you know it, you're racking up debt.

"People don't realize that when you're using a credit card you're literally taking out a loan," Aliche explained. "It's OK to use your credit card but if you're taking out a loan for a sandwich and then a loan for a coffee that's a sign you're spending too much. Those are things you should be able to pay for with the money you actually have. Not swiping your credit card but your debit card."

2. You find yourself double buying.

"What that means is that you're purchasing things that are not making any sort of impact," Aliche told INSIDER. "You don't even remember that you have them. If you're accidentally rebuying things, it means that you are purchasing items that are not meaningful. So it's easy to continue to buy and waste when you don't really care about the thing you are purchasing."

Do you really need that shirt in five different colors?

3. You have no budget.

Only 32% of Americans keep a formal budget. This means that the majority of the population is spending money without a plan. And that is dangerous.

"It doesn't have to be super strict but you should know things like my grocery spending is allowed this much or my entertainment spending is allowed this much," Aliche stressed. "If you're spending without any sort of intention in mind and you just buy, you are likely overspending. It's easy to go too far if you're not purchasing with intention."

There are several money management apps like Mint and Digit, which track spending habits and helps users save. But Aliche likes to keep it simple with an oldie but goodie.

"I just use a plain old Excel spreadsheet. There's nothing wrong with using apps but at the end of the day the budget is you."

Her budget consists of four columns: due date, the expense, the monthly amount, and the status. "Apps are good but ultimately when it comes to a budget, I like people to take a bit more responsibility," she explained.

Aliche also swears by having at least two separate checking accounts — one for spending and one for the direct deposit of your salary. The trick is setting the accounts to autopay. Savings, retirement, and investments automatically transfer from the salary account and the second account is strictly for bill payment.

"So my bills account knows on the first, pay Tiffany's rent and on the third, pay the Verizon bill. All I have to do is make sure the money is there. I only pay two bills a month. I pay my bills account twice and then it does the rest of the work."

I followed the CEO of $5.7 billion Okta around and learned the secrets of a tech conference that landed President Obama as a speaker (OKTA)

Okta Todd Mckinnon makeup

Last week, the conference center at the Aria hotel in Las Vegas was abuzz with excitement. Okta, the $5.7 billion identity management company, had landed a very special guest speaker in the form of President Barack Obama.

Okta has a classic Silicon Valley origin story. It was founded by two early employees of Salesforce: Former Salesforce engineering head and current Okta CEO Todd McKinnon, and Freddie Kerrest, who had been a sales exec at Salesforce, and is now COO of Okta.

When they first decided to pursue this company, no one believed in the idea. Salesforce and its gregarious CEO Marc Benioff are known for investing in the startups of ex-employees — but they never invested in Okta.

With little support, the two of them started with nothing and had to do all the initial programming themselves. But after they signed on their first customers, hundreds, and then thousands of cloud app companies began coming to them. Andreessen Horowitz invested and Okta soon became a Silicon Valley VC darling, hitting a "unicorn" valuation of over $1 billion in 2015.

In late 2017, the company had a successful IPO. Sales have been beating expectations and the stock price has doubled since then. Okta now has over 4,300 customers, 33,000 developers are building apps on its platform, and it hit $260 million in revenue last year. They welcomed 4,000 people to this conference in Vegas.

Okta was so excited to be hosting President Obama, the company invited Business Insider to tag along for a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to put on their tech conference, and what they had to do to host the 44th President of the United States, who still enjoys enormous popularity in the tech community.

The day before the conference opened, I met up with Okta cofounder and CEO Todd McKinnon at the private executive room his team had reserved for the week. He was drinking an espresso to get charged for the afternoon. (He is a coffee fanatic.)

Cybersecurity folks can often be reserved bordering on secretive. But not McKinnon. He's friendly, open, and cheerful with a dry wit.

And he has a strong vision for how passwords are evolving into digital identities, and what his company needs to do protect people as more and more of their lives are managed online.

His keynote this year was aimed at sharing his vision with his customers, the folks responsible for protecting people's online identities.

Later, we'll catch McKinnon blowing off steam by walking across the stage on his hands.

He doesn't do this trick during his actual keynote, but he's famous for taking a break during long meetings at the office in exactly this way.

He can walk a good six feet on his hands, thanks to his love of CrossFit. When he's not running Okta or hanging with his family, he's competing at the national level, doing events involving days of cardio, weights and shows of strength like this handstand walk.

The private executive room where we first meet up is lux.

It includes a kitchen stuffed with snacks and an espresso machine. It will also serve various meals during the day. It has two private studies and a conference room in back.

That's Okta's head of PR Jenna Kozel in the foreground. She's one of my guides for the day.

Here's everything you need to do to switch from an Android device to an iPhone (AAPL, GOOG)

iphone x vs pixel 2xl

Switching from Android to iOS can be daunting — you're not just switching to a new device, you're switching to an entirely new operating system.

But it turns out that the switch itself actually might be the easiest part.

Back in 2015, Apple introduced one of only two apps it lets Android users download, called Move to iOS (the other app is Apple Music).

Move to iOS is intended to help Android users seamlessly swap to an iPhone without losing their important data, like contacts, photos, calendars, and more.

The app is a key part of making the switch, but there are a few other steps along the way before you can get started with your new iPhone.

Here's everything you need to do to switch from an Android device to an iPhone.

SEE ALSO: 23 tips and tricks to get the most out of your Apple Watch

Step 1: Back up all your data.

Before making the permanent switch to a new device, make sure all your data is backed up.

On your Android device, go to your settings and look for "Backup & reset" (on some devices, this option may be under "Cloud and Accounts"). Then, check to make sure you have a working email address listed under "Backup account" and ensure "Back up my data" is set to "On."

Step 2: Download Google Photos that are on your Android device.

For many people, preserving their photos is a major concern when switching to a new device.

There are ways to transfer your photos in one batch along with all the rest of your data (more on that in a minute), but using Google Photos is a smart precautionary measure.

The Google Photos app works on both Android and iOS devices. The app also offers unlimited storage and automatic backups, so it's a good idea to use it all the time, not just when switching to a new phone.

Before you start the switch, download the app if you don't have it already. Then, allow it to backup all the photos in your camera roll. When you set up your new iPhone, just add the Google Photos app, sign in, and you should see all your photos.

Step 3: On your new iPhone, begin the setup process until you get to the screen that says "Apps & Data."

And while you're at it, plug both of your phones (old Android, new iPhone) into a power source.

I just went to Costco for the first time, and it was unlike any other shopping experience I've had (COST)

Costco

  • Costco is a leading retail giant famous for selling bulk products at discounted prices to its members.
  • For someone who has never stepped foot inside a Costco, shopping there can be overwhelming because of the seemingly endless products strategically scattered throughout the warehouse.
  • Nonetheless, the discounted products, organic produce, and family-sized offerings make a Costco membership well worth the money.
  • I'm a newly converted member — here's what surprised me the first time I visited Costco.

As I walked through the Costco entryway for what was to be my very first Costco experience, a friendly employee greeted me, and I chirped that it was my first time ever visiting a Costco.

To my surprise, he quickly shepherded me over to membership services, where I spent my first moments in Costco laughing at myself in line. A Costco novice, I'd assumed membership was more of a highly encouraged suggestion than an unbreakable rule.

All in all, I was totally unable to draw a parallel between Costco and any other store I've been to. The massive warehouse in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, is home to towers of 100-packs of diapers and steak shanks the size of my torso, many labeled with Costco's Kirkland Signature brand.

Costco offers fewer items than many superstores.

Something that sets Costco apart from other superstores is the relatively limited number of products sold there. While an average Walmart has over 100,000 products, Costco carries only about 4,000, CNBC reported in 2012.

This selectiveness allows Costco to offer manufacturers exclusive access to its more than 80 million members worldwide. For example, Duracell is the only battery brand Costco offers both in its stores and online.

Having fewer choices leads to easier decision-making for the customer, which can lead to increased sales, the marketing consultant Pam Danziger told CNBC.

The warehouse is laid out strategically.

The second floor of the Brooklyn Costco is home to both food items and clothing, while the ground floor has exclusively household goods, from paper towels and laundry detergent to fridges and garden hoses.

I was a little surprised to waltz from apparel to dairy, but there's a method to the madness. Costco stores are designed to promote browsing, and the company often shuffles the locations of staple items to make sure they get customers' eyeballs on more products, Business Insider previously reported.

Costco nut bars give name brands a run for their money.

Costco's Kirkland Signature-brand nut bars give their name-brand counterparts a run for their money. These bars cost about 30% less than Kind bars (also sold at Costco) and share many of the same simple ingredients. Who doesn't love an affordable sweet-and-salty flavor combo?

We drove a $65,000 Audi Q7 and a $60,000 Volvo XC90 to see which is a better luxury SUV — here's the verdict

$

Audi Q7 Thumb

  • The Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 are two of the best luxury crossover SUVs in the world.
  • The Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 offer its occupants luxury car comfort and minivan-like utility with the off-road capability of an SUV.
  • The Audi Q7 starts $49,900 while the Volvo XC90 starts at $46,900.
  • The Audi Q7's superior driving dynamics and infotainment system edges out the Volvo XC90 which has greater cargo room and more attractive styling.

The large crossover SUV makes a whole lot of sense.

It combines the user-friendly nature of passenger cars with the utility of a minivan and much of the off-road prowess of a traditional SUV.

And for those looking for a more plush crossover experience, the luxury brands have that covered. Two of the best large luxury crossovers we've ever tested are the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.

The Volvo arrived in 2015 just in time for the 2016 model year while the Audi debuted in 2016 as a 2017 model.

The Volvo XC90 was a revelation for us when we first tested the car in late 2015. It was the first new model to arrive in showrooms following the Swedish automaker's acquisition by China's Geely Group.

We loved the second generation XC90 so much that we gave it our 2015 Car of the Year award over some stiff competition like the BMW 7-Series and the Lamborghini Huracan. Amazingly, with the impending arrival of the new S60 sedan, the XC90 will soon become the oldest model in Volvo's lineup.

And then there's the Audi Q7. In our review of the second generation Q7, Matt DeBord referred to the Audi as the luxury SUV perfected.

In spite of the presence of the A8 luxury sedan, the Q7 is effectively Audi's luxury halo product. The original Q7 debuted back in 2007. In spite of early criticism of its aesthetics, the big Audi eventually developed into a fan favorite.

Both crossovers are built on modular platforms and share their underpinnings with passengers cars. The Q7 is built on VW Group's MLB Evo platform that's shared with the Audi A4 sedan and Bentley Bentayga SUV. While the XC90 is built on Volvo's SPA platform that underpins the company's entire passenger car lineup.

Here's a closer look at how the Audi Q7 3.0T Prestige and the Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription matches up:

First up is the Volvo XC90.

The Volvo XC90 starts at $46,900 for a base, front-wheel-drive T5 Momentum while our luxury spec T6 Inscription test car starts at $59,450.

Volvo also offers the XC90 as a plug-in hybrid with a starting price of $64,950.

While those looking for a luxury limousine feel can opt for the Volvo XC90 Excellence which starts $104,900.

Aesthetically, the XC90 is simply stunning. It exudes effortless style and elegance. Volvo's "Thor's Hammer" headlight is a stand out design feature.

The XC90's rear end is punctuated by dual exhausts and vertical taillights —a feature carried from the first generation model.
